Photoshop. The guy's moving but the picture on the wall isn't.

/yeah, I know it's a commercial.

Well, it's definitely a cool toy. But can't I already "show my pictures to anyone, anytime, anywhere" just by showing them the LCD screen on the back of my camera?

Now there will be no escape -

You can no longer escape the obnoxious neighboor who must show you the pictures from the last vacation. You will be trapped - like a timeshare presentation. The slideshow will grind on and on - "Oh - and here is little Jimmy going down the water slide! Isn't he just so cute?!" They will trap you in your own home. Use your own walls. Life as we knew it is over.

I was wondering why Nikon cameras have Nikkor lenses:

The Nikkor brand was introduced by Nippon Kogaku K.K. (Nikon's original corporate name) in 1932. Nikon originally reserved the Nikkor designation for its highest-quality imaging optics, but in recent history almost all Nikon lenses are so branded.

/yeah, I know it's a commercial.

Yeah, at 0:32, the guy holding the camera is moving it all around, but the "projected image" isn't moving at all! Plus there's a weird irregular dark border around the projected image -- I can't imagine why or how the camera would do that.

At the end, there's some fine print that says "Projected images may look different in actual use. Images and monitor information are for illustrative purposes only." I'm still really curious. I guess I'm gonna have to go down to an actual store and see how good the projected images really look.

Yeah, that's a good point. Now I can trap the cousin who formerly would sit in the back of the crowd, saying "yeah, that's great, really great" even though he couldn't actually see the little pictures on my camera at all.

re: #71 srb1976

Man was RAH a freaking genius. Excerpt from Door into Summer(1957):

But I got along. The job I found was crushing new ground limousines so that they could be shipped back to Pittsburgh as scrap. Cadillacs, Chryslers, Eisenhowers, Lincolns-all sorts of great, big, new powerful turbobuggies without a kilometer on their clocks. Drive `em between the jaws, then crunch! smash! Crash!-scrap iron for blast furnaces.
It hurt me at first, since I was riding the Ways to work and didn't own so much as a gravJumper. I expressed my opinion of it and almost lost my job . . . until the shift boss remembered that I was a Sleeper and really didn't understand.
"It's a simple matter of economics, son. These are surplus cars the government has accepted as security against price-support loans. They're two years old now and they can never be sold, so the government junks them and sells them back to the steel industry. You can't run a blast furnace just on ore; you have to have scrap iron as well. You ought to know that even if you are a Sleeper. Matter of fact, with high-grade ore so scarce, there's more and more demand for scrap. The steel industry needs these cars."
"But why build them in the first place if they can't be sold? It seems wasteful."
"It just seems wasteful. You want to throw people out of work? You want to run down the standard of living?"
"Well, why not ship them abroad? It seems to me they could get more for them on the open market abroad than they are worth as Scrap."
"What!-and ruin the export market? Besides, if we started dumping cars abroad we'd get everybody sore at us-Japan, France, Germany, Great Asia, everybody. What are you aiming to do? Start a war?" He sighed and went on in a fatherly tone. "You go down to the public library and draw out some books. You don't have any right to opinions on these things until you know something about them."

Emphasis mine.

But if you didn't destroy the parts, it wouldn't be really green, Capitalism be damned.

I estimate some of he "savings" a couple of days ago. Impact of Cash for Clunkers given the size of the US auto fleet on emissions and fuel usage will be negligible.

The tragedy is that they must remove and destroy all the parts, also...and the industry feels it will actually make cars more expensive. I wonder how many cars and their parts were even made in the USA.

I think they only need to destroy the engine, not the other parts, right?

Only the engine must be destroyed, they can sell most of the rest. Around here, they pull everything off the nicer cars, sometimes even the doors, hood and trunk and just crush the shell.

There are plenty of good ideas that have come out of the GOP on Health Care. Senator DeMint was on O"Reilly talking about them and Senator Coburn has been pushing hard also. Re: esch & Killgore:
There is a real reason for anyone with an unusual condition or expensive treatment to be concerned with a move toward a national heath program.
Expensive drugs help pay for research; if the government health care bureaucracy says they are too expensive, they will be phased out for possibly less effective treatments, and less research. The way this happens is clear from looking at national health care programs in other countries. This will affect some people like my daughter, who needs an unusual drug that costs $900 a month to continue breathing. It's not surprising that people get upset at this prospect.

"To those with the unconstrained vision, to say that people are innately equal, but that vast differences in economic and social results exist, and that privileges are both taken for granted and repaid only in arrogance, is to say that the existing society is intolerably unjust and must be drastically changed. Some would say that such a system must be changed "at all costs" or by "whatever means necessary."

Hey RW-- the stuff involving end of life care is all in sec. 1233. All it does is provide for a meeting every 5 years that will be paid for. There's no requirement for the patient to even take them up on it, by the way.

It's a way of ensuring that seniors and others can have those consultations paid for, and if they wish, they'll have assistance in signing orders about their life sustaining treatments, writing a living will, naming a proxy should they be incapacitated, and so on.

And although I'm in the Minority Party, I'm personally glad that THIS ONE piece of legistlation WILL get some scrutiny (the Cap and Trade might also) instead of the RUSH, RUSH, RUSH Congress has been given in the past six months.

Hey jcm, I'm using Internet 7 - inadvertantly downloaded IE 8 (it's in Service Pack 2) but got a live person on the phone at HP and she talked me through getting rid of it!

Since your issues seem to be web based, you might think about giving Firefox or Chrome a try and see if it makes a difference.

I find the "end of life care" part, well, distressing. This given that my elderly Uncle, who had spent 7.5 years in an Alzheimer's care facility, passed in early July. The "end of life care" STUFF is IMHO decisions that folks who are in need on "end of life care" aren't capable of making.
I'm just revolted about this whole thing.
Soylent green gave these people f*ing ideas.
And now they're making me swear.

You may know this, but in Oregon, a woman who needed a cancer drug was denied it by their system. They offered her, instead, suicide assistance. The (EVIL) drug company found out about her case, and gave her the drug free of charge.

This is a real concern, for real reasons.

re: #172 iceweasel
Yes BUT - why would such consults be necessary AT ALL if the end game wasn't to get some folks - well, frankly, dead and no longer a drag on the healthcare system? I didn' see ANYTHING in that bill (though Lord knows I tried but the damned thing is LONG!) that EXPLICITY PROVIDES that notwithstanding anything contained in Sec. 1233, any and all treatments deemed advisable by the patients DOCTOR will prevail.
I mean (other than the fact that I've paid WAY more into Soc. Sec and Medicare than I will ever live to use up) IF I turn out to be eligible for radiation therapy, I'd have a 90% chance of living 5 years or more. But to get there will cost considerable health care funds and I'm not ever gonna be considered a productive member of society.

This is a real concern, for real reasons.

Here's the story,

Oregon Health Plan sent her a letter telling her the cancer treatment was not approved.

Instead, the letter said, the plan would pay for comfort care, including "physician aid in dying," better known as assisted suicide.

But - I don't understand you're statement that there's resistance to reform on BOTH sides of the aisle?.

Yes, primarily from the Blue Dogs, but there are enough other Dems that are beholden to insurance co's and the like.

I do understand people's concerns about this, but if you look at the language of sec 1233, it's not scary. The reason fro providing the consultations (which are optional btw) is to ensure that the patient is informed of all options, and that the patient's wishes are what's respected. Sadly, many people never make their wishes known, and then it's too late if they become incapactitated.

sec 5a(ii) this is what an "order" is:

‘‘(ii) effectively communicates the individual’s preferences regarding life sustaining treatment, including an indication of the treatment and care desired by the individual.

I did check this out very thoroughly for some friends of mine who are seniors and are very concerned. BTW, so far the AARP has approved this, (so has the AMA) and the AARP would hardly be likely to approve it if it were promoting euthanasia or designed to deny care.

Um I do understand what you're saying but must be too tired to write clearly. Those consultations - if they are only what you propose - still doesn't deal with my concerns of health care rationing which I elucidated in my #163 above and IF health care rationing ISN'T INTENDED, why couldn't language like that, together with the patients treatment for terminal diseases and other matters shall be made and implemented by the Patient and the Doctor(s), regardless of their cost and the length of life which the patient may have subsequent to such treatment(s). The cost of which will be made based upon the rules CURRENTLY in effect in Medicare? IF THAT IS CONGRESS' INTENTION, SPELLING IT OUT LIKE THAT CAN'T HURT THE HEALTH REFORM BILL THE WAY YOU'VE DESCRIBED SEC. 233 OR ANY OTHER SECTION could it?
I'll check back in with you tomorrow on the next thread over! THANK YOU!

But it does say that, RW. I'm not exactly sure what you want from the bill. Should it spell out everything it DOESN'T do, to reassure the people who don't understand the language of the bill, don't factcheck, and would rather believe the worst of it, and Obama?

I suggest you read the bill and do your own fact-checking.

BTW, it's also not going to ration healthcare.

201 realwest  Wed, Aug 5, 2009 6:45:04am

re: #200 iceweasel
I should read the entire healthcare bill before the Senate even passes IT'S version? Why don't the DEMOCRATIC Congresscritters read it BEFORE they vote on it?
And when it has a provision such as section 233 YES, it should say "notwithstanding the foregoing, there shall be no rationing of healthcare for the eldery or terminally ill and the legal basis for their treatment should be between the patient and the patient's doctors ONLY. Why stick in #233 at all if you're not gonna clarify it UNLESS you intend to ration healthcare.
They can write a fucking 1000 page opus on Health care but can't spare the thirty or so words which would make it clear that terminally ill people and elderly people WILL GET THE HEALTH CARE - NOT EUTHANASIA - if that's what they chose. For crying out loud iceweasel, I DO NOT believe that you are not smart enough to see that if you put in a provision requiring mandatory counseling (and no it's NOT voluntary) about end of life decisions that you necessarily NEED to put in language such as that which I've proposed.
That IS the bottom line with Obamacare - medical treatment for terminal patients (e.g., radiation treatments that might give me a 90% chance of living for 5 more years [during which, let us pray, medical science comes up with some sort of cure] is EXPENSIVE. Caring for the elderly is EXPENSIVE so how do we pay for Obamacare if we still continue to pay for the health care requisite to live in an ever aging population?

Late to the thread, as always.

Charles, you're big into cool gadgets. Have you heard of the Gigapan robot and the cool stuff you can do with it? (... such as this)

My hubby just bought one and is going gaga over it. We need a better camera to make it worth it though.

As for this built-in-projector, well, let's just say 'that don't impress me much,' but that's because my entertainment center is based on a huge wall projector to begin with.

Yes, if you want to freak out and claim it says things it doesn't say. Yes. Read it.

Otherwise, there is genuinely no point in discussing it-- because you don't want to discuss it. You want to discuss a lunatic fantasy of what it might say, what it might mean. This is like having a conversation about the meaning of a book with a schizophrenic homeless guy who has never even read the book, but is sure it's all about him and about the gubbmint beaming rays into his head.

I have not read the entire 1,000+ pages bill, and my jaw would drop if you had either. What I have read are specific highlights, and they are disastrous. Not denying a lot of people on the Right are getting hysterical about it, but this bill is horrible in its own right.

Uh, and it would ration care.
