Ladies and gentlemen, the pig has left the hangar, as Human Rights Watch issues a new report on war crimes committed by — Hamas.

Airborne porker sighted over Middle EastJERUSALEM (AFP) – Rocket attacks carried out against Israel by the Hamas rulers of Gaza and other Palestinian militants amount to war crimes, Human Rights Watch said in a report published on Thursday.

“Hamas forces violated the laws of war both by firing rockets deliberately and indiscriminately at Israeli cities and by launching them from populated areas and endangering Gazan civilians,” HRW programme director Iain Levine said.

“Hamas rocket attacks targeting Israeli civilians are unlawful and unjustifiable and amount to war crimes,” he said.

Y'know, there might just be an idea there. Perhaps Israel should recognize a Palestinian State, then wait about 15 minutes for said Palestinian State to commit an act of WAR...
And then another half-hour or so, the Palestinian State would no longer exist! QED

Since, according to HRW's beloved UN charter, war crimes are the worst of possible crimes -- then shouldn't we be THANKING Israel for trying to STOP Hamas' war crimes? How in the world can anyone blame Israel for the actions it takes (i.e. incursions in Gaza) to stop the most heinous of crimes?

The next time someone tries to criticize israel for Operation Cast Lead etc. etc. (and do they ever stop such criticism?), wave this report in their faces. And ask: If Israel doesn't stop Hamas, who will? NO ONE, that's who.

If you support human rights, you must support Israel.

No, the Saudis are shilling for Fatah. They've said the split in the Palestinians is doing more damage to the Palis than the Israelis are.
Of course, Fatah also doesn't want peace with Israel; they're just better at playing to the West by pretending they do.
But I think the pretense is so they can ask the West for money, which we duly pay. And then, Fatah steals it, and then points to how poor they are and how they need more money.

No, but...LGF has been pretty slow for me recently. Could be that all the futuristic snazzy new features (various video embeds, Ajax, Java, etc.) are disagreeing with your slightly older browser or operating system. There's only one shelf (the top one) and only one book (the Koran).

And in Pakistan, they'll riot and burn the store if they do something wrong, then blame the store for burning the Korans.

I remember that. Some people were also discussing putting stickers on them, which of course is actionable vandalism.

I had suggested at the time that if someone wanted to "make a statement"--and rile up people--without laying themselves open to legal action, all they had to do was place bookmarks printed to look like strips of bacon into the copies on the shelves.

I wonder if they can make ink from pig products and use that to print the bacon bookmarks.

re: #124 buzzsawmonkey

Not necessary. If the mere representation of a pig in the form of a piggy bank or an image of Piglet from the Pooh stories on a coffee mug is sufficient to upset the pork-averse, a nicely-printed bookmark will do the job.

It is better that such a bookmark not be made with any pork product--because any upset which attends the mere pictorial representation will be all the more absurd.

I guess Hamas doesn't tell their kids the story of the three little pigs, then.

The 2nd interesting bit of news from VA this week...

Former Virginia Attorney General Bob McDonnell (R) has opened up a statistical lead over his Democratic rival in the race for governor, according to new polls out of the Old Dominion, and some political observers say a public souring on President Obama could be the cause.

The latest poll, conducted for the liberal DailyKos website by the independent polling firm Research 2000, shows McDonnell with a 51 percent to 43 percent lead over state Sen. Creigh Deeds (D). That's up from a statistically insignificant one-point margin between the two in a mid-June poll.

In the new poll, both men have healthy leads among their bases, though McDonnell does noticeably better among Democrats than Deeds among Republicans. McDonnell also sports a 55 percent to 40 percent lead among independent voters.

“There is a lot of misinformation about health insurance reform circulating on the internet and elsewhere. Some of it is intentionally misleading,” Douglass responded in an e-mail. “We want to be sure people have the facts about health insurance reform that will lower costs, protect consumers from insurance regulations that deny them coverage and assure quality and affordable health care for all Americans. We are not compiling lists or sources of information. We may post fact checks from time to time to be sure Americans know the truth about health insurance reform.”

235 Diamond Bullet  Thu, Aug 6, 2009 12:19:50pm

My read of the underlying article is that HRW is challenging the weapons employed, not the rationale of the underlying attacks:

The homemade Qassam and Soviet-designed Grad rockets used by Palestinian groups in the Gaza Strip cannot be aimed with any reliability, the report says.

"Under the laws of war, such weapons are indiscriminate when used against targets in densely populated areas," the New York-based watchdog said.

"As the governing authority in Gaza, Hamas should publicly renounce rocket attacks on Israeli civilian centres and punish those responsible, including members of its own armed wing," Levine said.

When it comes to HRW I guess I'll take it, but a more general "Um, you have no basis to fire rockets at Israel at all" statement would have been nice.

We didn't declare war on Nazism, we declared war on Germany. We didn't declare war on Japan's warrior culture, we declared war on Japan. We won both, and as to the latter, big boom big. We declared war on poverty (Johnson) and cancer (Nixon) and we still have both (granted we have less due to capitalism, not due to the "wars" we "declared"). No serious jihadi movement can exist without states for either direct or indirect support. You target the states. The problem is, modern liberalism is a swamp which provides jihadis with succor and prevents free states from defending themselves -- and that's coming from what some people believe is a San Francisco moby pothead.

Iowahawk scores again - Know Your Town Hall Mob Agitators

Greetings citizen! By now you may have heard scattered rumors of state and party officials encountering reactionary resistors at local health care reform information programs. Do not be alarmed, for our 5-year plan for citizen health proceeds without delay. Remain stalwart! The truth can be told at last, that these so-called "protests" are merely the desperate rear flank mob actions of dead-end bandits and saboteurs in the pay of enemy insurance agents.

Pay them no heed, for these outside agitators in no way represent any threat to our great patriotic push forward for increased citizen heathfulness! These well-dressed prep school gangsters of reaction seek only to frighten and demoralize and intimidate you, with their confusing "facts" and hob-nailed Sperry Topsiders. Unfortunately they are joined in conspiracy by a well-financed network of unlicensed blogs and talk radio traitors, who exaggerate their numbers and percolate disinformation -- even cleverly staged YouTube videos of an impostor President Obama saying "quotes"! ...

I agree with this insofar as they are nutty and meaningless concepts. What the fuck is a war on terror? How does it end, when we're all holding hands across the globe drinking Coke? Now, I don't agree with Obama's motivation, but it's time to call a spade a spade.

Who aren't we at war with?

re: #228 J.D.

That is what I thought when I was reading up on it. (Come one in, the water is boiling!)

I think the last thing this administration wants to do, is actually having to defend this proposition on actual merit.

It is good the public wants some accountability from the representatives as it relates to such a massive amount of revenue, and what this will do to our current health care industry.

Qualifying arguments, such as it being the norm that they often do not read 100 page bills filled with legalese is no excuse.

This is not naming an airport, or funding libraries.

This is critical mass type of legislation.

re: #285 Scion9

That's not entirely true. We absolutely did set a policy of erradicating both the Emperor's Cult and Nazism. Neither was allowed to exist in conquered Germany and Japan.

You're missing the point. They were the actual governments, not some nebulous concept. War on terror. We going to deploy our own military on domestic soil in violation of the posse commitatus act? We do have terrorists here. Randall Terry may be one.

No Discrimination for Pre-Existing Conditions
Insurance companies will be prohibited from refusing you coverage because of your medical history.

Usually only a problem if you're trying to buy insurance after not being covered for 6 months.

No Exorbitant Out-of-Pocket Expenses, Deductibles or Co-Pays
Insurance companies will have to abide by yearly caps on how much they can charge for out-of-pocket expenses.

The already do abide by caps...they're in the policies. Sounds like Obama wants to reduce the caps? Add to everyone's expense and not let individuals/companies tailor their coverage? Reduction in individual liberties anyone?

No Cost-Sharing for Preventive Care
Insurance companies must fully cover, without charge, regular checkups and tests that help you prevent illness, such as mammograms or eye and foot exams for diabetics.

Yeah... let's make absolutely sure individuals have no responsibility for how much health care spending they do.//

We have a double-dystopia society, which has combined the casual hedonism of Brave New World with the surveillance of 1984--but the surveillance is not undertaken, for the most part, by any "Big Brother."

Independent surveillance--by videocameras and cell phones--inevitably makes all manner of things formerly considered "private" public, and people habituated to using their photographic equipment casually do not even think of it as surveillance, any more than they think of the consequences of revealing private information online.

I do not have any trouble with surveillance of recognized public space. I believe it is inevitable and can be valuable as long as the data is not used for prurient or frivolous reasons.

I do have real trouble with the idea of 'human less" law enforcement.

Insurance companies will be prevented from placing annual or lifetime caps on the coverage you receive.

THAT should run up premiums nicely...

Extended Coverage for Young Adults
Children would continue to be eligible for family coverage through the age of 26.

Well, I guess if the kids are still living at home at 26, maybe that makes sense?

Guaranteed Insurance Renewal
Insurance companies will be required to renew any policy as long as the policyholder pays their premium in full. Insurance companies won't be allowed to refuse renewal because someone became sick.

If this is happening now, it's certainly unscrupulous...

BTW, this is Obama's list. Is any of this in any of the actual bills?

There's gotta be a dirty joke there somewhere. Kind of like the one about the penguin who likes ice cream.

Last time I was at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, a penguin was pleasuring itself. Various parents were directing their kids' attention anywhere else, while my friends and I were laughing.

What made it even funnier was the way all the other penguins tried not to look at the penguin rockin' and rollin' on a rock, and I'd swear they looked embarrassed when he put his little head back and made a very loud noise.

It's less disturbing when a commercial company puts you on a spam-sending list than when the government puts you on a propaganda-sending list. We expect businesses to act like that. We don't expect the White House to act like that.

Actually- it's quite natural. I've commented before through my congressional district portal on the internet. If you contact them, they assume you're interested in official positions and follow ups are the norm. It's quite easy to put them on a spam list and avoid the follow ups in the future if that is your desire, but from their perspective- you're an interested constituent worth contacting.

Benjamin Nathan Cardozo

Cardozo only served on the Supreme Court from 1932 until his death six years later...

[snip]

Both Cardozo's maternal grandparents, Sara Seixas and Isaac Mendes Seixas Nathan, and his paternal grandparents, Ellen Hart and Michael H. Cardozo, were Sephardi Jews of the Portuguese Jewish community affiliated with Manhattan's Congregation Shearith Israel;

Hispanic

(Spanish: hispano, hispánico) is a term that historically denoted a relationship to the ancient Hispania (geographically coinciding with the Iberian Peninsula). During the modern era, it took on a more limited meaning, relating to the contemporary nation of Spain.

re: #381 buzzsawmonkey

My concern is different. I am concerned with people becoming habituated to constant surveillance from their fellow-citizens armed with all manner of fun electronics. Fellow-citizens are not constrained by the laws which constrain law enforcement.

I am also concerned because the fishbowl existence which people who live on YouTube and Facebook are eagerly embracing destroys the basic expectations of privacy which underlie the very concept of liberty. If you reveal information voluntarily, the protections of the Fourth Amendment don't apply--and therefore your protection against arbitrary government action disappears.

People are throwing away their privacy without a thought, and it will change the entire way society functions.

I had a Facebook account which I've subsequently disabled. When it found my high school girl friend without any more than me listing my high school and graduation date and the college I attended, I got seriously wierded out.

Did anyone think Sotomayor would not be confirmed?

The usual dog and pony show that accompanies the hearing did occur, but in some strange way, I think it might be good to put a little heat on the subject considering the responsibility they will have once they are in such a position.

I seem to recall much more fire during the Roberts & Alito hearings. The usual suspects came out with their religious backgrounds, but remained silent concerning hers.

No attempts by the right side of the house to Filibuster this judicial vote.

Obama would not vote for Roberts.

The current trend towards "remote computing" in which one's documents never actually reside in one's own computer at all, but remain in a central server, also concerns me. Aside from access issues, the issue of what happens if the central server is hacked is a matter for concern; also, what is the expectation of privacy for those documents if the central server is sued or subpoenaed?

This remote computing is being sold as a convenience to the texting generation--you don't even need a computer, just an advanced phone, and you can do all your business wherever! But these things which are offered under the rubric of convenience raise some disturbing questions about privacy, security, and personal control.

Privacy is a total illusion.

I find it very convenient that HRW would come out with these statements long after the furore and publicity during the height of the armed conflict. I guess it's fine for them to be "balanced" long after Israel is unambiguously crucified in the world media.

Embed videos from Youtube, Liveleak and Vimeoo (sp?) copy the URL and past it directly into the comment box. Use the actual URL, not one you click in a search engine. In Youtube over on the right, they have a place where you can copy the direct link.

Major Garrett on Cavuto just reported in his question to WH PS Gibbs today, the PS tried to explain that the WH is not collecting names or email addys re: fishy info/conversations on Obama Care. Huh? Fed regs require all WH correspondence to be held for the National Archives. The WH appears to be trying to backtrack here - "oops, we stepped in it again!"

It's that pesky First Amendment thingy, again.

Obama and staff are plain overwhelmed, can't think straight...trying too much... too fast... tryin' to strike while the irons still hot.. and coolin' fast. Ain't much gonna git done. ...hopefully!

Victor Davis Hanson interview on the Obama/Israel situation...

Damage? It depends now on Israelis' ingenuity to survive Obama. They must neither fall into the trap of earning US public ire ... nor go along with American pressure to the point of endangering Israel's survival. One of the tragedies of all this is the need to posture leftward to be liked in order to survive by rightward thinking.

Avatar. Needs to be a .jpg, .gif or .png less than 32k in size. You need a basic photo editor to resize the image.

Just below where you sign in to LGF is "My Account" click on that. You'll find a section for avatar. Click the "choose" button and navigate to the image. Click "upload" then down at the bottom click "save changes."

You have to reload the thread page to see your avatar.

I'm not sure that flying pigs are the best metaphor for a situation involving jews and muslims.

We had a big fuss over here in Britain in 2005 when flying pigs were used in relation to a Jewish politician, and perhaps I'm a bit over-sensitive on the subject.

Avatar (great '70's tune by Les Dudek from his "Say No More" release):

Tell me the truth Avatar
What to do
Don’t let these people bring me down
I’ve got so much to do
Sometimes I forget
The ways of love that I found
It’s hard to spread the words
When your tongue is tied
By petty ways of mans life
I know the time is near
When we will be equal
This day for truth is now

Don’t you know I feel
Like I’m sinking in deep mire
Where there’s no, no place for standing
Yeah I’m drownin’ in deep waters
Where the floods overflow me
And I’m weary of my cryin’
And my eyes have yet to see
So save me oh Lord
From the power of the dogs
I know this evils wrong
But my heart is melting
So stay away from me
All you workers of iniquity
‘Cause the Lord has heard my voice
My voice a weepin’

I’ll follow you to the train
Shovel my soul to the flame
Ride these rails to where I came

I find it very convenient that HRW would come out with these statements long after the furore and publicity during the height of the armed conflict. I guess it's fine for them to be "balanced" long after Israel is unambiguously crucified in the world media.

Human Rights Watch has condemned Hamas many times in the past.

I can't imagine the reaction fron the spineless world body when Israel sooner or later destroys Irans doomsday machine.

589 benk  Thu, Aug 6, 2009 5:01:11pm

These accusations against Hamas will never gain any footing in the MSM and will instead continuously focus on "settlements" and baseless accusations against the IDF. Here's another news story that didn't gain much attention:

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) on Thursday flatly denied accusations by anonymous IDF sources that three ambulances that were transferred to the organization some two weeks ago were seized by Hamas.

593 arromdee  Fri, Aug 7, 2009 9:09:47am

HRW has recently come under criticism for using its anti-Israel policy to sell itself in Saudi Arabia. It's plausible that they are criticizing Hamas specifically to counter the bad impression that's being spread about them based on that.

 Frank says:

Americans like to talk about (or be told about) Democracy but, when put to the test, usually find it to be an 'inconvenience.' We have opted instead for an authoritarian system disguised as a Democracy. We pay through the nose for an enormous joke-of-a-government, let it push us around, and then wonder how all those assholes got in there.
