OT: A few articles from David Frum…
What if We Win the Healthcare Fight?

… we’ll still have the present healthcare system. Meaning that we’ll have (1) flat-lining wages, (2) exploding Medicaid and Medicare costs and thus immense pressure for future tax increases, (3) small businesses and self-employed individuals priced out of the insurance market, and (4) a lot of uninsured or underinsured people imposing costs on hospitals and local governments.

We’ll have entrenched and perpetuated some of the most irrational features of a hugely costly and under-performing system, at the expense of entrepreneurs and risk-takers, exactly the people the Republican party exists to champion.

Not a good outcome.

Even worse will be the way this fight is won: basically by convincing older Americans already covered by a government health program, Medicare, that Obama’s reform plans will reduce their coverage. In other words, we’ll have sent a powerful message to the entire political system to avoid at all hazards any tinkering with Medicare except to make it more generous for the already covered.

If we win, we’ll trumpet the success as a great triumph for liberty and individualism. Really though it will be a triumph for inertia. To the extent that anybody in the conservative world still aspires to any kind of future reform and improvement of America’s ossified government, that should be a very ashy victory indeed.

He offers some alternatives here: Reforms Conservatives Can Favor
Seems reasonable.

The fact that he is unemployed and without health insurance, yet is protesting the universal coverage plan being proposed, speaks strongly of his commitment to opposing it.

This is an attempt to change the topic and talk about something else, with a typical dash of Leftist character assassination tossed in for good measure. The issue is Mr. Gladney’s beating, apparently by union thugs. His personal circumstances have no bearing on this matter, as far as I can see.

From the KOS article you referenced:

The man is asking for help. Not demanding it. Not saying he is entitled to it. That is the difference. People will gladly help him for this reason.

I wouldn’t even respond to what is so obviously a taunt, and an attempt to change the topic. This has nothing to do with Mr. Gladney’s beating; it’s an attempt to deflect questions about that incident and shift the focus elsewhere.

The questions that need addressing are: Was Mr. Gladney beaten by union members? Was he specifically targeted? If so, what was the nature of the targeting? Was the attack spontaneous? If so, what set it off? Was it pre-planned in any fashion? If so, who organized it?

These are the questions that need to be asked and answered. Attempts to talk about something else indicate a certain uneasiness on the part of those doing the shifting.

120 SixDegrees  Sun, Aug 9, 2009 1:36:52pm

re: #115 WinterCat

Very true. Moreover, the Kos and other people are suggesting he is faking his injuries and have even said that he was allegedly beaten (paraphrasing). You can see it on the tape.

Well, if he’s seeking help with medical costs then he’s been examined by doctors who are recommending further treatment, or are seeking payment for treatment rendered. Given that, it’s a simple matter to determine whether his injuries are legitimate: ask his doctors.

And again, this is an attempt to change the subject rather than address it.

re: #112 SixDegrees

The fact that he is unemployed and without health insurance, yet is protesting the universal coverage plan being proposed, speaks strongly of his commitment to opposing it.

This is an attempt to change the topic and talk about something else, with a typical dash of Leftist character assassination tossed in for good measure. The issue is Mr. Gladney’s beating, apparently by union thugs. His personal circumstances have no bearing on this matter, as far as I can see.

It’s odd that in this case that the commenters at Kos aren’t willing to admit there might be some thugs in the SEIU membership; they certainly have talked about the subject before:

Alleged St. Louis “attack victim” has no health insurance

[His attorney, David] Brown finished by telling the crowd that Gladney is accepting donations toward his medical expenses. Gladney told reporters he was recently laid off and has no health insurance.

Any liens on his house? Back taxes owed? No doubt he’ll have his records pulled and leaked to the KosKids any hour, right?

Or does that come out in tomorrow’s edition?

A commentator from another blog said it best…

“if Gladney was an Obama supporter, right now he’d be more famous than Rodney King.”

126 aboo-Hoo-Hoo  Sun, Aug 9, 2009 1:41:36pm

From: Mitch Stewart, BarackObama.com
Subject: Visit Rep. Paul’s office in Galveston

All throughout August, our members of Congress are back in town. Insurance companies and partisan attack groups are stirring up fear with false rumors about the President’s plan, and it’s extremely important that folks like you speak up now.

So we’ve cooked up an easy, powerful way for you to make a big impression: Office Visits for Health Reform.

All this week, OFA members like you will be stopping by local congressional offices to show our support for insurance reform. You can have a quick conversation with the local staff, tell your personal story, or even just drop off a customized flyer and say that reform matters to you.

We’ll provide everything you need: the address, phone number, and open hours for the office, information about how the health care crisis affects your state for you to drop off (with the option of adding your personal story), and a step-by-step guide for your visit.
[…]
As you’ve probably seen in the news, special interest attack groups are stirring up partisan mobs with lies about health reform, and it’s getting ugly. Across the country, members of Congress who support reform are being shouted down, physically assaulted, hung in effigy, and receiving death threats. We can’t let extremists hijack this debate, or confuse Congress about where the people stand.

Office Visits for Health Reform are our chance to show that the vast majority of American voters know that the cost of inaction is too high to bear, and strongly support passing health reform in 2009.

Don’t worry if you’ve never done anything like this before. The congressional staff is there to listen, and your opinion as a constituent matters a lot. And if you bring a friend, you’ll have more fun and make an even greater impact.
[…]
Wherever you live, these visits matter: Many representatives are pushing hard toward reform, and they are taking a lot of heat from special interests. They deserve our thanks and need our support to continue the fight. But those who are still putting insurance companies and partisan point-scoring ahead of their constituents must know that voters are watching — and that we expect better.

Earlier this week, the President wrote that “this is the moment our movement was built for” and asked us all to commit to join at least one event this month. This is the way to answer that call, and rise to the challenge of this moment together.

Thank you for going the extra mile when it matters the most,

Mitch

See above; this is a distraction. That they’re taking this approach indicates they’re very uneasy about the implications and what may come out regarding this attack that they’re so intent on ignoring, while talking about something - anything - else.

If Gladney was attacked by union members, there’s a strong chance they planned it in advance. Quite possibly with additional help. What will a thorough investigation turn up? Were others involved? And - most importantly - if so…who?

Keep the focus where it belongs - on Gladney’s assault. This is how the Left typically reacts when confronted with uncomfortable truths. Stay on topic.

Note that an investigation may well wind up exonerating the union - possibly even the attackers, if it turns out they were provoked. I’m assuming Mr. Gladney has filed a complaint; without it, the police won’t be able to get very far.

I’m not putting forward that speculation. Just pointing out that this is the direction any investigation would take. These are the questions that need to be asked. Historically, a group of union members attacking someone attending a public event has turned up collusion more often than not. It would be very sloppy police work to ignore such an angle.

Also, it’s entirely possible that this is yet another wild exaggeration inflated with - and by - Hot Air. Unfortunately, Conservatives are now forced to work twice as hard to arrive at the truth, because they have to attend to the puke vomited forth by some of it’s own members before even getting to the facts.
