39 minutes now. A tsunami would have reached the Bangladesh and Myanmar coasts by now. A lot can depend on bottom topography and many, many other factors though, so the closest areas are not always the hardest hit and sometimes they are not hit at all.
IF YOU ARE IN THE AREA, GET TO HIGH GROUND RIGHT NOW!

20 Honorary Yooper  Mon, Aug 10, 2009 1:36:32pm

I sincerely hope there is no tsunami, but as Shiplord siad in the last thread,

IF YOU ARE IN THE INDIAN OCEAN AREA, HEAD FOR HIGHER GROUND.

There is no tsunami warning system in the Indian Ocean rim as there exists in the Pacific Ocean.

21 Randall Gross  Mon, Aug 10, 2009 1:37:15pm

From the position I'd say Burma / Myanmar could get hit. The depth of the Andaman sea makes it unlikely that Malaysia is in great danger. If a very large quake hits the tip of the ridge in the Andaman sea (which it didn't in this case) then the resulting tidal wave through the Malacca and Singapore straits would create biblical proportion death tolls.

Talk about shitty timing, from this morning:

Tsunami warning buoy for Phuket now dead in the water

Supplied as part of US$16.6 million in funding for the US Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System (IOTWS) Program, the buoy gave Thailand for the first time the ability to detect directly any tsunami waves before they hit land. That ability is now history, the victim of a dead battery.

According to the US Government’s National Data Buoy Center, the buoy sent out the last of its 15-minute-interval signal messages on June 16 this year.

Chotenarin Kerdsom, who heads the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Phuket Office (DDPM-Phuket), confirmed that the buoy’s battery is dead.

“The original battery was designed to power the unit for one year, but fortunately it ran for two years. If we install a new battery it will resume sending its signals,” he said.

The National Disaster Warning Center (NDWC) that is now responsible for maintaining the buoy has yet to get budget approval to install a new battery, he said.

“They will have a chance to get a budget in fiscal 2010, but it will require approval from the Budget Bureau,” he said.

That's about $294,000. I don't really understand why it would cost so much to replace a battery, but perhaps it would be worth it.

Here's what causes earthquakes - from the parody textbook "Science Made Stupid" (no longer in print, alas):

1. Earthquake prediction appears in press.

2. Alarmed public starts 'earthquake-proofing' homes, buildings.

3. Birds and animals, sensing fear among humans, and upset by commotion of increased construction work, become agitated.

4. Vibration from construction and from animals jumping and down on surface is transmitted to fault.

5. Earthquake occurs.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says a strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.6 has shaken Tokyo and surrounding areas. No casualties were immediately reported.
The agency issued a tsunami warning from the temblor early Tuesday, which centered off the Suruga Bay, southwest of Tokyo.

The quake rattled furniture and walls in Tokyo but there have been no immediate reports of damages or casualties.

The hell of it, to me anyway, was that such a scenario is not impossible at all. In fact, given enough time, it's inevitable.

Massacre of the Comet Wardens (I wrote this a few years ago. It is online but thoroughly buried)

One of my favorite scenes in all of science fiction is "the massacre of the Comet Wardens" in Niven and Pournelle's Lucifer's Hammer.

Lucifer's Hammer, 1977
time: late 70s
place: mostly Southern California

An amateur astronomer named Tim Hamner discovers a new comet on a course that will take it very close to the Earth. The comet nucleus will rain mountain size chunks all over the Earth if it happens to hit, causing tsunamis, drastic weather change, and effects akin go nuclear winter.
In the weeks and months after Hamner's discovery, the chances of a collision grow from one in a million to one in a hundred to one in ten. A new religious cult, the Comet Wardens, forms in Southern California. Playing on the discoverer's name, their leader declares that the comet is the "hammer of God" sent to punish humanity for its wickedness. The Wardens dress in white robes and oppose all efforts to prepare for a possible collision, insisting that only prayer and repentance will save humanity.
By the morning the comet is due, millions have already fled the LA basin for the hills and deserts. With a collision deemed ever more likely, the last hold-outs run for the hills, jamming the freeways.

In a final spectacular demonstration, the white robed Comet Wardens chain themselves across a major traffic artery, snarling traffic for miles and trapping the panic stricken hordes in the city.
The comet actually hits, dropping a huge asteroid into the ocean just off LA. It is clearly visible from the city, God's own tsunami is headed their way and thousands cannot escape.
The Comet Wardens have thrown away the keys to their chains, there is no time or equipment to cut the chains and open the highway, and the police have fled.
Thousands of would-be refugees realize that they are doomed and that they could have gotten away if not for the Comet Wardens, now helpless in their long chains as the vengeful mob pounces. They have about half an hour before the tsunami hits.

Read it, it's good.

Speaking of Burma...

Is Burma trying to obtain nuclear weapons?

Here is a photo of a suspect Burmese building that concerns intelligence experts. As you can see, it is near a river –- like the 5 MWe reactor in Yongbyon, North Korea, whose basic design was copied and built in Syria as well. The building has large power lines feeding it. And it’s certainly an unusual building to have in a remote part of impoverished Burma.

While the prospect of Burma's repressive regime going nuclear is a disturbing one, what's more disturbing is the presence of North Korea as Burma's nuclear patron. You may recall that the Syrian el-Kibar reactor that was destroyed by Israel in September 2007 had been built by the North Koreans and financed by the Iranians.

The Axis of Evil just got a new member.

Reich astutely points out:

In return, Big Pharma isn’t just supporting universal health care. It’s also spending a lots of money on TV and radio advertising in support. Sunday’s New York Times reports that Big Pharma has budgeted $150 million for TV ads promoting universal health insurance, starting this August (that’s more money than John McCain spent on TV advertising in last year’s presidential campaign), after having already spent a bundle through advocacy groups like Healthy Economies Now and Families USA.

The emotional qualities are antagonistic to clear reasoning. I assure you that the most winning woman I ever knew was hanged for poisoning three little children for their insurance money, and the most repellant man of my acquaintance is a philanthropist who has spent nearly a quarter of a million upon the London poor.'

I read it, in junior high. I figured that people must be really desperate for anything to make them feel better. Every few years, I pick up the most recent "self-help" best seller, and have that impression reinforced.

Americans' entry into Iran linked to vote unrest: MP

TEHRAN (Reuters) - A leading Iranian lawmaker said on Monday the illegal entry of three detained U.S. citizens into the country may have been related to unrest that erupted after Iran's June presidential election.

Iran detained the three Americans more than a week ago after they strayed across the border from Iraq, according to Iraqi officials.

"Their illegal entry cannot be altogether unrelated to the post-election unrest ... What mission were the three pursuing in Iran? Why did not they apply for Iran visas?" said Mohammad Karamirad, a member of parliament's Foreign Affairs and National Security Committee, the official IRNA news agency reported.

"In the most optimistic scenario, we think that the three had plans to interfere in Iran's internal affairs," Karamirad said.

What is this world coming to when even Robert Reich says that "our democracy is in terrible shape" due to the deal Obama cut with the pharm industry?

Reich astutely points out:

In return, Big Pharma isn’t just supporting universal health care. It’s also spending a lots of money on TV and radio advertising in support. Sunday’s New York Times reports that Big Pharma has budgeted $150 million for TV ads promoting universal health insurance, starting this August (that’s more money than John McCain spent on TV advertising in last year’s presidential campaign), after having already spent a bundle through advocacy groups like Healthy Economies Now and Families USA.

Bad Reich. Bad Reich.

That should make getting re-fills more of a circle-jerk than they already are. I just spent over an hour calling in 2 of my dear ol' Mother's re-fills to Nellis AFB. (Dad's USAF retired, and has Tri-Care For Life) They only give her a 30 day supply for a med she's been taking for 10 years. I have Epilepsy and am on disability and will probably be on the same meds for the rest of my life. My Dr writes 3 re-fills for these meds. I sometimes have to call them in a week in advance as it is, I wonder what it's going to be like under Barry-care..? Or will I be one of those too ill to treat because I'm disabled and am going to croak soon anyway?

I was in the area 3 weeks before the huge Tsunami in Krabi, and went back to Phuket a few weeks after.

The power of the tsunami is pretty amazing, and scary. Thankfully I am so cheap that I stay further inland. I was in Phuket in December and noted that tsunami warning horns are everywhere on the island.

A while back a lizard posted an article that theorized a lot of the experimentation was done by shaman apprentices, the shaman looking for new cures and mind altering substances. The shaman would watch for reactions in the apprentice.

There is a method, taught in survival classes for determining if something is edible. Rub a little on your arm, watch for reaction, then rub a little bit inside the mouth, then taste and spit out, then eat a tiny bit.

I've been trying to figure out why Western politicians think "sanctions" will work on societies that don't get much from the countries that would abide by the sanctions anyway.

The whole point of sanctions is to cause pain to the society by denying it various needed imports, and markets for its exports. But what does Iran import from the US--from the West, for that matter--and what does it export to us (aside from, perhaps, oil whose source can be easily concealed, since oil is fungible) that will affect its economy in a major way? Not a whole hell of a lot.

So where's the threat?

I hugely enjoyed the tsunami surfing as well.

It's around 239-244 in my Fawcett trade paperback copy. Because of the episodic nature of the novel, the opening of the scene (the Warden's blockade) is much earlier, around 211-214.
Gil's epic but ill-fated surf ride is on 233-236.

Fat is fat. I may not have a sweet-tooth, but man, do I love fats. And my waistline is beginning to prove it, to my dismay.

Ask your Male to put you on a strict regimen of exercise and food deprivation in the Poconos.

Grab a mop, bucket and hipwaders.

There's a scene in one of Christopher Moore's books where a scientist who studies whales becomes a lesbian. That applies.

What do you do when an elephant comes in your window?

Paint the house so it does not look like another elephant. You don't want THAT happening again, do you?

Heh. I meant all the people out there in the way of the storms and tsunamis and all. I know they're reading LGF right now, I just know it!

And good luck to all Lizards, too. Needs to be said once in a while.

In ballad, lay, and poem;
Only trust an elf or dwarf
As far as you can throw 'em

It's amazing to me that the 2007 NIE report, which stated that Iran had stopped its nuke program in 2003, is now ignored by Dems and MSM. 2005 NIE reports Iran is working on nukes, 2007 says it quit in 2003, 2009 reports Iran will have nuke by 2013.Surely these flip flops were not driven by politics. //

Is anyone else receiving junk mail looking for people to become social workers? I have been getting tons of that kind of stuff spouting off that Obama is funding these positions with the "stimulus".

Do not remove your clothes. It's a scam.

At that, Bromosel started to sprint, but catching his feet in his sword belt, he tripped and impaled himself on his pointed shoes.

Since we're on geology: My nomination for the most innocent phrase that you cannot google without bad results:

Bedding cleavage: Cleavage of a rock parallel to the bedding (the layers of rock.)

It's a totally G-rated term.

Try "nubile".

No, it was hundreds of miles away. The 2004 quake was off the coast of Indonesia (Sumatra, IIRC).

You are correct - I finally got off my butt and checked it out. Still - very close - even a couple of hundred miles for such large quakes is close.

Hi Cal! Never read that author, but the book looks good.

I very much recommend that Niven and Pournelle's Lucifer's Hammer for it's hard sci/fi with a lot of sarcasm and real 'how would man-kind react' scenario. And then consider it was written in 1977!
That book made me wanna read more of Pournelle's sci/fi.

I'm in Japan at the moment, down in Kusatsu in Shiga Prefecture. I felt the Honshu quake - down here it shook the hotel, nothing too alarming, for 30-40 seconds. No biggie.
