Meteor Shower Imminent

Science • Views: 2,444

By the way, if you’re into rocks and bits of sand that speed through the solar system for billions of years, then burn up in fiery streaks as they enter the Earth’s atmosphere, tonight’s your night.

The annual Perseid meteor shower is expected to put on a good show this week for those willing to get up in the wee hours of the morning and wait patiently for the shooting stars.

In North America, the best time to watch will be between midnight to 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, but late Tuesday night and also Wednesday night could prove fruitful, weather permitting.

The Perseids are always reliable, and sometimes rather spectacular. The only things that puts a damper on the August show are bad weather or bright moonlight. Unfortunately this week, as the Perseids reach their peak Tuesday and Wednesday nights, the moon will be high in the sky, outshining the fainter meteors.

Still, skywatchers around the globe will have a good chance of spotting the brighter meteors.

We have fabulous dark skies in NM, but in the 15 years I've been here, only once were they cloudless during the Perseids. It's cloudy right now!

And for some more viewing information...

Like all meteor showers, the Perseids will appear to occur
ALL over the sky... Opinions differ slightly on this, but the general consensus is that no one area of the sky is clearly better than another.

As a result, you'll want to watch the part of the sky which is DARKEST, in order to see the most meteors: in other words, the part of the sky furthest from the moon tonight, and/or furthest from ANY manmade light sources.

So face away from the moon, MAXIMIZE the amount of open sky you can see, and watch for a good stretch of time (15 minutes to an hour!) And if you're disappointed with the show tonight, then try watching the Leonids in November, Geminids in December.

Nope. He will get an actual meteorite fragment, from North West Africa (Sahara), unclassified (standard stone H Chrondrite), 4.3 billion years old, about a weather and shock values of about 2-3, nice specimen.

Meteorites are not as rare as one imagines. I have a source in Morocco who sell me a few kilo's every year. They are picked up by Bedouin's who sell them in markets.

Nope, that's just why they find so many of them, tons every year. The conditions in the Sahara is obviously very dry, they come in, bust up while still in flight, you get a field of fragments spread over a number of miles, hitting the sand helps keep the shock value down, and they get buried.

The come back to the surface over the years, in pretty good shape.

It's legal for him to have the gun as long as it is unconcealed, the police told MSNBC. The man was on private property -- church ground on the roadway leading to the high school where Obama would speak. The church gave the man permission to be there. However, according to police officers, he is under constant surveillance and is not anywhere near where the president will speak.

I was thinking about that. I think the possible political backlash of arresting him outweighed the security risk. I'm sure a sniper's crosshairs were on his forehead the entire time. There was a very serious risk that if a car backfired or some small commotion could have easily gotten him killed. Fox news viewers and other extremists would label him a martyr and retaliate. We are really on a razor's edge.

You Deleted Your Cookies? Think Again

More than half of the internet’s top websites use a little known capability of Adobe’s Flash plugin to track users and store information about them, but only four of them mention the so-called Flash Cookies in their privacy policies, UC Berkeley researchers reported Monday.

Unlike traditional browser cookies, Flash cookies are relatively unknown to web users, and they are not controlled through the cookie privacy controls in a browser. That means even if a user thinks they have cleared their computer of tracking objects, they most likely have not.

What’s even sneakier?

Several services even use the surreptitious data storage to reinstate traditional cookies that a user deleted, which is called ‘re-spawning’ in homage to video games where zombies come back to life even after being “killed,” the report found. So even if a user gets rid of a website’s tracking cookie, that cookie’s unique ID will be assigned back to a new cookie again using the Flash data as the “backup.”

. . .

Where to find these flash cookies:
* Windows: LSO files are stored typically with a “.SOL” extension, within each user’s Application Data directory, under MacromediaFlashPlayer#SharedObjects.
* Mac OS X: For Web sites, ~/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/FlashPlayer. For AIR Applications, ~/Library/Preferences/[package name (ID)of your app] and ~/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/FlashPlayer/macromedia.com/Support/flashplayer/sys
* GNU-Linux: ~/.macromedia

Sure enough, the indicated directory was lousy with these files. I hope they enjoy the recycle bin.

/sneaky bastards

Seriously, though, surfing the web on company time is not just a bad idea because you're using company time/money/property when you should be working, but also because your company's IT dept. sees and records everything you do on their computers. EVERYTHING. And that info never disappears.

re: #71 Slumbering Behemoth

I did not see that in the HotAir piece (the only one I've read so far), but that does change things a little. Still, holding up a protest sign that states "It's time to water the tree of liberty" while sporting a loaded gun on the roadway leading to where the POTUS would appear does not speak well of his judgment nor his sanity.

Yeah, and what is it Mr. Jefferson wanted the tree of liberty watered with? And what was happening at the time he made that sterling statement? I honor the man like mad for what he got right, but his judgement on the French Revolution was pure crazy talk.

Press the button / ctrl-P and up comes a screen that says:

It could even have on it a logo and title graphic that says "Chas. Johnson Management Center For Sustainable Best Practices."

Man killed by shards of glass after hurling girlfriend through shop window

A man bled to death when he was impaled on a large shard of glass after throwing his girlfriend through a shop window in a street row.

The 30-year-old victim was seen arguing with the woman in the Regent Street area of London's West End shortly after 2am today.

Witnesses told police he hurled the woman against the window of a branch of Banana Republic up to three times.

Possibly. You do NOT want to mess around with glass. The speed with which you can find an artery by mistake with broken glass is yet another of those basic common-sense things that the movies tend to leave out.

Two things are necessary to qualify for a Darwin Award:

1. The awardee (is that a word) must die by means of his/her own stupidity. Suicide does not count as far as I know.

2. The awardee must not have any offspring.

Here we go again...
Glenn Beck - The Elderly, Disabled, Eugenics & Obama Health Care (Part 1)

I still can't believe we had a White Nationalist/Paulian with a loaded gun at Obama's town hall today. I haven't been this afraid for my country since 9-11.

Well, I looked at the second video and Beck gets the segment regarding Ezekiel J Emanuel, PhD completely wrong. He is quoting from a paper published in the Lancet early this year entitled Principles for allocation of scarce medical interventions and it was authored by three individuals: Govind Persad, Alan Wertheimer, and Ezekiel J Emanuel.

First paragraph:

Allocation of very scarce medical interventions such as organs and vaccines is a persistent ethical challenge. We evaluate eight simple allocation principles that can be classifi ed into four categories: treating people equally, favouring the worst-off , maximising total benefits, and promoting and rewarding social usefulness. No single principle is sufficient to incorporate all morally relevant considerations and therefore individual principles must be combined into multiprinciple allocation systems. We evaluate three systems: the United Network for Organ Sharing points systems, quality-adjusted life-years, and disability-adjusted life-years. We recommend an alternative system—the complete lives system—which prioritises younger people who have not yet lived a complete life, and also incorporates prognosis, save the most lives, lottery, and instrumental value principles.

Immediately we can read that this is regarding the ethics surrounding "scarce medical interventions."

The summary of the complete lives from this paper is as follows:

1. Principles included - Youngest-first; prognosis; save the most lives; lottery; instrumental value, but only in public health emergency

2. Matches intuition that death of adolescents is worse than that of infants or elderly; everyone has an interest in living through all life stages; incorporates the largest number of relevant principles; resistant to corruption

And they finally state the objections which Glenn Beck completely ignores for dramatic effect:

3. Reduced chances for persons who have lived many years; life-years are not a relevant health care outcome; unable to deal with international diff erences in life expectancy; need lexical priority rather than balancing; complete lives system is not appropriate for general distribution of health care resources.

Emphasis mine.

Also of note is that Ezekiel Jonathan Emanuel has been with the NIH since 1997.

I was lost in the Wind River Mountains in Wyoming one time and had to sleep on the ground with not much to keep me warm. It was a clear night and was the peak of the Perseid meteor shower. I was miserable but at least I had a fantastic light show. If you can get to a place where there isn't a lot of ambient light and watch the sky for a while, it's well worth the effort.

133 Locker  Tue, Aug 11, 2009 8:12:19pm

Great info on the upcoming shower. Caught this event a few years ago in a National Forest on the way to Reno from Sac. Not knowing what to expect you may assume, as we did, that you might see something here or there. We were quite amazed to see the sky regularly lit by streaks of light for quite some time. Definitely worth checking out.

134 theuglydougling  Tue, Aug 11, 2009 8:53:13pm

Nice. I've always been an astronomy buff. The first time I saw this shower was in the late 80's, and that is still the best one I've seen over the years. My siblings and I just laid in the yard, amazed, seeing not just little streaks of light that you expect with some, but seemingly huge fireballs with very long sparkly tails. I should step out tonight and take a look.

Skarupa Explains How To See Perseid Meteors

Thanks, Racer.

I went out with a pair of binoculars this morning at about 1:30am CDT. I looked all over the place, but didn't see anything. It was partly cloudy, but not enough to really gum up the works. Unfortunately, I didn't know where Perseus was, so looked around at just about everything except northeast. Why? Because the humongous maple tree across the street totally blocked my northeast view. Then there was the moon, the streetlight a little south of the tree and city light contamination in general.

Oh, well. Better luck next year.
