Standoff in LA

US News • Views: 1,987

Going on right now in Los Angeles, a man who allegedly threatened Barack Obama led police on a wild car chase, ending in a standoff outside the Federal Building in Westwood.

WESTWOOD — A man accused of making threats against the White House led officers on a wild freeway chase that ended in a standoff outside the Federal Building.

The man was wanted on various local warrants, says police Sgt. Kevin Lowe. He is also wanted for questioning by the Secret Service as part of a federal inquiry into threats against the White House, says Lowe.

U.S. Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan says the suspect made a threat but would not give details.

Police have not publicly identified him. But the Daily Breeze is reporting that the red Volkswagon Beetle is registered to Joe Moshe, a resident in the 8300 block of Creighton Avenue.

Neighbors who did not want to be identified said Moshe “sounds like he could be dangerous,” but he has never caused any significant trouble for them.

“He’s got issues. He doesn’t take his medication, he doesn’t do that well,” a neighbor told the newspaper.

He's still in the car after the fourth canister of tear gas directly into the car!

“He’s got issues. He doesn’t take his medication, he doesn’t do that well,” a neighbor told the newspaper.

That's not very reassuring.

This apparently has been going on since this morning. why haven't any officers approached the car? Do they believe he has a bomb in the car with him?

4 canisters of tear gas? Thats not how we roll in the D. There was a high speed chase going on in the city this morning while I was driving to work. Live play by play on the radio by the morning jocks who were watching it live from Newschopper 4 on TV. Another driver pulled a left turn right smack into the guy who was going through the intersection at 85 mph, rolls the speeding car, it slams into a light post and Blammo! Chase over. I could see the cloud of smoke a couple minutes later as I drove nearby.

Well, the way things are right now in America, we may never know the truth. Here are my predictions:

Nancy Pelosi will claim he was trying to kill Obama because he didn't want poor people to have health care. Henry Louis Gates will claim he was trying to kill Obama because he's a racist and he wants to kill all black people. The Daily Kos will claim that Sarah Palin paid him to kill the president. Sarah Palin will claim that he went nuts because Obama prevented Medicare from paying for his psych meds. Alex Jones will say that he's part of a secret Mossad assassination squad that was planning to kill the president using the flu vaccine (come on, his name is "Moshe" for goodness sake!). Pam Geller will say he's a Muslim who should have been deported years ago. And Glenn Beck will claim that he became homicidal when the cars.gov website implanted evil thoughts in his head.

Fruit fly infestation in Toronto from piles of garbage. link Your text to link...

Much of Canada's largest city is in the grip of a fruit fly infestation, the result in part of the six-week city workers strike that gave rise to mountains of rotting trash in temporary dump sites throughout the metropolis.

Those piles of green garbage bags, redolent with the odour of decomposing fruits and vegetables as they cooked in the summer heat, would have proved an irresistible lure to genus Drosophila and provided the tiny insects with a perfect breeding ground, said Gard Otis, an entomologist at Ontario's University of Guelph.

President Dmitry Medvedev told Secretary of Defense Anatoly Serdyukov to “take all necessary measures to establish the whereabouts and to find the missing ship ‘Arctic Sea’ with a Russian crew on board, as well as to free [the ship's crew], should such a need arise,” the Kremlin told Interfax on Wednesday.

The Arctic Sea is a 5,000-ton cargo ship that was carrying timber worth approximately $1.6 million from Finland to Algeria. It left port July 23, and the next morning was reportedly boarded in Swedish waters in the Baltic Sea by a band of masked hijackers in a high-speed rubber boat, who identified themselves as anti-drug police. The 15-man crew was tied up while the hijackers searched the ship.

After 12 hours, they apparently disembarked and sped away, breaking radio and other communications gear but without taking anything of value, the crew reported to the Maltese Maritime Authority, where the ship is registered. Instead of making port after the incident, the ship continued on its trip.

The ship was last heard from July 28, when it radioed the Dover, England, Coast Guard because it was approaching the English Channel. In a call the Coast Guard called routine, the ship said that it was en route to the Algerian port of Bejaia, where it was due to arrive Aug. 4. The last time its position was recorded by tracking equipment was July 30, when it was off the coast of the northern French town of Brest. On Aug. 2, the ship was spotted by Portuguese coastal patrol planes.

But the next day, Aug. 3, Interpol told the Dover Coast Guard that the ship had been hijacked more than a week before and asked the Coast Guard to stay vigilant. By that point, however, the ship had passed through the English Channel and had fallen off the radar.

The Russians cannot be happy about this.

I hear that some really don't like taking the "meds" -- some say it makes them feel funny, or they "can't be themselves." I watched a CBC program on mental patients in prision wards -- the government has the power here to force people to take and stay on their meds -- if they refuse to take the medication, they're locked up...(one fellow, the film followed, absolutely refused to take the medication; he was angry, delusional, and potentially violent -- so he stayed in jail -- at the end of the program, they did a follow-up blurb -- one day the fellow was found dead in his jail cell -- apparently another inmate had suffocated him with a pillow..)

Mental hospitals here in the states aren't exactly rest homes...

No, not where I live.

"Bush is a goddamned fascist. He is literally as bad as Hitler. He literally plans to eliminate the entire Bill of Rights. He actually has agents bugging your telephone right now. Seriously. Every day, Bush throws people in jail because they said bad things about the Iraq war on their telephone. You can get sent to Guantanamo just for saying that. Seriously."

I think either BDS or ODS was any deeper or more crazy, but, at least as far as I can tell, BDS was far more common.

Oh. Well the truth of that day is that JFK Jr. had too much money and bought too much airplane. Equipped with only a VFR license and a cast on one foot, he took off at dusk and flew into IFR conditions, became disoriented and couldn't see outside. When his plane was losing altitude it picked up speed, and in response he pulled back on the yoke to raise the noise. Unfortunately the plane was in a turn and pulling back the yoke merely tightened the turn. By the time he figured it out, if he ever did, he was dead.

Hmm I think I probably have that or had it in the past. Personally Bush/Cheney came on the scene for me just as I was starting to pay attention to politics.

You know what's weird, just talking about this makes me empathize with folks a bit more regarding Obamaphobia. Just thinking back to the last 8 years I can freely admit I felt an actual underlying fear, constantly, that these people were in control. I couldn't even watch Bush speak. Not from anger at anything he was saying or even a specific policy, but because it made me so uncomfortable due to general "anxiety" that I couldn't handle it.

I think I shall be a bit easier on Obamaphobes now but I hope they will do their best to look forward, try to take the good out of everything and persevere.

I still can't understand the lefties hatred for Cheney.. But then, I coudn't understand their hatred for President Bush either.

Karl Rove, on the other hand I could understand their hatred for. He managed to get President Bush re-elected and his political advice is very very accurate..

I'd say its pretty clear-cut. Cheney is very conservative. I'd argue he was much more of a committed conservative than Obama is a committed liberal, but even if I'm wrong on that count, I haven't seen many deny Cheney's conservativeness. As for Bush, I think a big part of the initial hatred was due to his packaging as a common fellow, while at the same time being the son of an ex-president.

[Link: blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com...]

That is depressing.

As for the AWOL bit, it was indeed blown out of proportion. But remember, while Charles famously blew the "evidence" out of the water, the fact remains that Bush did not take his required flight physical and he did not fly a single flight hour for his assigned unit or any other that he was transferred to in his last year of service with the Texas ANG. And that, to me, as a former Air Force pilot, was never satisfactorily explained. In large part, it was because after the "proof" was exposed as a hoax, the questions of the facts of the case were tabled.

However, I think each side's dislike (for the most part) of Bush and Obama is/was deeply personal. Its not my view, as I find it very difficult to know enough about a politician's real personality - given that the politician is only going to show what he/she wants you to see and the opposition will do their best to show that politician in the worst possible light.

Certainly not the Right. The Left, yes, but they were of the fringe and Democrats in general, although no fans of Bush, were well aware that it was Al Queda who attacked us. And like I say, the country was united after 9/11... for like 5 minutes, but hey, it was something.

There was a hatred of Clinton, no doubt. Slick Willie brought it out in droves. I think part of BDS is a "payback" of some sort by the Dems for right frothing at everything Clinton did. I know polarization is nothing new to the political landscape, but I would say what we are seeing now has it's roots with Reagan. The new and improved Personal Polarization. The personal hatred from the left...not just of the policies...but the man himself. The right responded in kind when Clinton came in...and Bush, the poor chap, never had a chance after the 1999 election...The personal hatred of him started there and has not let up...just go ask one of your liberal buddies about what they think about George Bush...you'll see it instantly.

It depends on your definition of liberal buddies. I think there is a huge difference in view between a college aged, politically active liberal on the one hand, and a liberal senior citizen, just for example. Or a liberal from San Francisco vs. a liberal from the burbs somewhere. And a question that is perhaps immpossible to answer regarding Democrats during Bush and Republicans now - how much do the most extreme color and/or distort the image of the rest of the party?

The Truthers are the folks that want the "Truth" about 9/11, namely that it was a Bush conspiracy which qualifies as derangement.

Certainly not the Right. The Left, yes, but they were of the fringe and Democrats in general, although no fans of Bush, were well aware that it was Al Queda who attacked us. And like I say, the country was united after 9/11... for like 5 minutes, but hey, it was something.

Obama talked during the campaign that Bush squandered this goodwill. It's true that my comment was neither brilliant nor particularly clever (context is everything), and I presume you just didn't want to see any messy cluebat or aisle-cleanup action in what had been a pretty serene thread.

As for Charles (or whoever or whatever zapped the comment at such a late hour), sorry for the perceived bad taste - or whatever it was that prompted its removal. I've been here for a while, don't post often, and do feel duly chastised for having posted something which for the first time, met with management's disapproval.

Experience here has shown me that it can happen to the best of them, and since I'm far from being part of that august company, I'll take it with a dose of humility and what native intelligence I possess.

yochanan, while I always appreciate your input, I have to add that if 'I've totally lost it', at least I'm in pretty good company (cf., the above-cited links).

As for imagining that I'd seriously compare any elected American pol (but we're talking about the Prez here, right?) to Hitler, your assertion that that was what I was doing in the deleted post is dead wrong. The sarcasm should have been evident, but it evidently wasn't.

It retrospect, it was a less than brilliant comment, but by no stretch of the imagination an attempt at a serious equivalence between Obama and Hitler.

I really hope that's clear.

And now she is Sec. of State?!?!?! May G-d help us, and help Israel. She is a second The One regarding Israel and the Jews. Why my fellow Jews vote Demonrat, is beyond me..we were Demonrats until the second month of Jimmy the Jew hater's administration.
