or do I? see, I'm still in the dark ages technologically. turn on computer. push buttons. cry when it doesn't work.

I recently set up my parents' new PC. The OS seems decent enough. Fast, fast, fast little Dell they bought themselves.

The nod to Mac X (Windows has a dock now) is telling.

We installed it on half the work computers and it looks pretty good. No complaints from the tech guys at all. They like it.

Yes, which is why I don't see myself upgrading my Windows box from Vista. Some upgrades have solved its instability; the biggest problem is I have to wait before logging in or some things don't work right (system tray icons for volume, power, network don't come up)
It isn't worth $200 to fix that.
OTOH, I will upgrade my Mac to Snow Leopard.

It's harder to sort through windows on the windows toolbar. Also, I hate with a passion how it maximizes any window that you accidentally drag too close to the top of the screen.

Other than that, pretty cool, but I've been using Vista x64 sp1 for quite some time now.

I should see what an academic price is, as I teach part-time at an online university. That's how I got the system, through Dell's partnership (Apple also has one), and bought Office for around $110, academic price.
And that is the main thing I use the machine for.

IIRC, JCM, the $29 Snow Leopard upgrade fee is only for those already running Leopard (which would be a minor upgrade, roughly equivalent to a Windows service pack)...the cost to those not already running Leopard is bound to be a wee bit more expensive (at least $100-125, IIRC)

I've had no trouble networking Vista and XP Pro machines. Maybe because I turned off (on XP) stupid, er, insecure, I mean simple file sharing. (That uses only the guest account, which should be disabled for security. Turn it off, and you need matching accounts or need to log in, but it works fine)

Peg C. said...

The IRS will also have the power to electronically deduct from our bank accounts fines, penalties and taxes for failing to get the approved coverage and possibly any number of other "misbehaviors" not approved by the Inquisitors.

Florida said...

Massachusetts has a similar IRS provision. You must buy health insurance if you live in Massachusetts or else you will be fined by the Mass Division of Revenue.

But only if you are a Jew.

If you are a Muslim, you don't have to buy health insurance. Muslims are exempted from having to pay the tax.

Christians are also fined. When you fill out your income tax, you are asked whether you are a Jew (or a Christian). If you answer yes, then you are assessed a penalty if you do not have health insurance.

But if you answer that you are a Muslim, you get a free pass.

Are they right?

I have to admit, I'm impressed with the way the other chains (including Kroger) have stepped up their game. The nearest Whole Foods...isn't all that near to me. I stopped by the local Dominick's yesterday on the way home from work, and found superb heirloom tomatoes. I chopped them up with onions and basil bought at my local farmer's market today, and dressed them with extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar (sorry, but nothing tops Whole Foods for condiments) for as good a salad as I've ever had.

(...) The Senate bill imposes a new requirement that all persons who provide health care coverage to others must file a return with the IRS listing the names, addresses, social security numbers, and the coverage period for each person, and "such other information as the Secretary [of Health and Human Services] may prescribe." (Section 161(b) starting at page 107). The bill does not limit what information the Secretary may request, so it is conceivable and likely that information as to the nature of the coverage, the family members included, and other details will be reported to the IRS.

The House bill contains similar provisions in section 401(b) (at pp. 175-176). The following information must be reported by the person providing health coverage:

(A) the name, address, and TIN of the primary insured and the name of each other individual obtaining coverage under the policy, (B) the period for which each such individual was provided with the coverage referred to in subsection (a), and (C) such other information as the Secretary may require.(...)

So our privacy rights are skirted...

I think I'm more libertarian (with a small "l" and definitely was a large "L" until 9-11) in my general outlook than a Republican but for now, I can't see myself voting for anything other than the Republican ticket. Too much at stake and the Libertarian Party has about as many distasteful kooks as the Demonrats. So my political views (and votes) are more who I am voting against as to who I am voting for. And before Mandy comes along and tries to punt my nutsack, I voted Palin/McCain in the last election.

The BNP have often denied being a racist party.

But as a man dressed as U.S. president Barack Obama was put in stocks, the true colours of the party were clear for all to see.

The shocking scene was part of the BNP's annual Red, White and Blue festival which is taking place in Codnor, Derbyshire this weekend.

Ever known a divorced dad who gets a little behind in child support payments?...If the government can garnish wages for child support or alimony, you be sure they can do many other things to your bank account...

Here's the thing - it is called the "due process clause". From memory (so I may get a word or two wrong) "No person can be deprived of lifer, liberty, or property without due process of law".

That means that the government can't take your stuff willy nilly. For example - garnishments generally require a court order. It is a judge who signs off on child support garnishments. Or garnishments for judgments. For a judge to do it someone has to first file suit, and you have to be notified of it and have an opportunity to state your side of things before the gavel swings.

Now you are free to consent to pay people for goods and services by having them pull the money out of your account. All sorts of businesses are doing that today, but with the consent of the account holder.

The government would not have the ability (under due process) to forcibly enroll you in a plan and then forcibly pull money from your accounts as compensation for their services. Can't happen - not forcibly. And if a bill passed with such language then it would be the very first thing that would be attacked with injunctions, which would be granted.

Nuke-nobbler raygun 747 scores 'surrogate' test success

The USA's amazing jumbo-jet-mounted blaster cannon, the Airborne Laser (ABL), continues progress through flight testing. Lead contractor Boeing announced last night that the ABL has successfully detected and locked onto a test rocket and held a "surrogate" low-power beam on it. Had a full-bore blast been fired, the rocket would have been destroyed.

"This test demonstrates that the Airborne Laser can fully engage an in-flight missile," said Boeing jumbo-blaster veep Michael Rinn. "Pointing and focusing a laser beam on a target that is rocketing skyward at thousands of miles per hour is no easy task, but the Airborne Laser is uniquely able to do the job."

The flight test reportedly took place on Monday off the coast of California, with the target rocket launched from San Nicholas Island.

The Senate bill imposes a new requirement that all persons who provide health care coverage to others must file a return with the IRS listing the names, addresses, social security numbers, and the coverage period for each person, and "such other information as the Secretary [of Health and Human Services] may prescribe." (Section 161(b) starting at page 107). The bill does not limit what information the Secretary may request, so it is conceivable and likely that information as to the nature of the coverage, the family members included, and other details will be reported to the IRS.

This information is to be provided to the IRS for good reason. The House bill provides for a tax on people who do not have acceptable coverage at "any time" during the tax year. House bill section 401 provides for a new section 59B (at pp. 167-168) of the Internal Revenue Code:

The reporting requirements can only be understood in this tax context. In order to know which taxpayers to tax, the IRS needs to know which taxpayers do not have coverage received from someone else (normally, an employer).

does any of this make you feel all warm and fuzzy

NASA's moon plan too ambitious, Obama panel says

NASA doesn't have nearly enough money to meet its goal of putting astronauts back on the moon by 2020 -- and it might be the wrong place to go, anyway. That's one of the harsh messages emerging from a sweeping review of NASA's human space flight program.

The Human Space Flight Plans Committee, appointed by President Barack Obama and headed by retired aerospace executive Norman Augustine, has been trying to stitch together some kind of plausible strategy for America's manned space program. The panel has struggled to find options that stay under the current budget and include missions worthy of the cost and effort.

The committee members will meet with administration officials Friday and will report that there is no realistic way to get Americans back on the moon by the target date of 2020, which has been the agency's goal since President George W. Bush signed off on the ``Vision for Space Exploration'' in 2004. Landing on the moon by 2020 would require such drastic budgetary maneuvers as de-orbiting the International Space Station -- crashing it into the South Pacific -- in 2016.

. . .

The ``program of record'' -- NASA's current strategy -- has not fared well in the committee's review. Former astronaut Sally Ride, a member of the panel, said the gap between NASA's goals and its current budget totals roughly $50 billion by 2020. If the space station's life is extended for five years, she said, the current budget would allow for the completion of a heavy-boost moon rocket only in 2028, and that would be without spending money on developing the components of a lunar base.

re: #143 JCM

I got it straightened out.

My beef is, I was guilty to the IRS, garnishment, credit report dings, the whole enchilada. No due process was I had to on my own hook prove to them I didn't earn that money. There was proceedings where they had their evidence and I had mine. I started out convicted.

I wasn't earning any where near $50k.

PIMF, no proceedings...

Yeah I saw that. I wonder how he got added to the list. It's not a common name and he's about a moderate politically/religiously as you can get. Somebody messed up.

I might be the only lizard who LIKES MICROSOFT.

I remember when O/S software cost hundreds of dollars. (Anyone else remember SCO Unix?)

I remember when there were dozens of versions, and programs cost a lot because there had to be multiple versions for different o/s.

I look at Apple as monopolistic in the classic sense. A lot more so than MS.

I think it is a lot easier to make O/S software when you completely control the hardware, and don't have to worry about old applications working. It is nice to be able to leave the former user base behind (ask Zombie)...

Sure, VISTA is not as good as 7, but VISTA is better than XP. AND it is expected that each O/S will be better than the last.

Apple has some great stuff (although I think there are better mp3 players) BUT Microsoft has some cool stuff coming (Project Natal) and I would not count them out so quick.

This was a paid Microsoft advertisement...

re: #123 rain of lead

That is merely the nose of a camel nudging under the tent. Pay it no mind.

Well that would make illegals less likely to qualify.

Cool I normally buy tech stuff via amazon any way since they let us skate on the tax here in CA. I'll use the link for my pre-order when I grab my copy. I can't wait as I do not like Vista even though I'm normally MS friendly.

153 Dar ul Harb  Sat, Aug 15, 2009 8:54:14pm

Just coincidentally, I'm currently installing the Windows 7 Release Candidate on my rebuilt home theater PC.

154 Dar ul Harb  Sat, Aug 15, 2009 9:21:15pm

re: #153 Dar ul Harb

It's built on an ASUS P5N7A-VM motherboard, with onboard NVIDIA GeForce 9300 graphics (HDMI and optical SPDIF out), with a 3.0 GHz Pentium D (Presler) dual-core (hope to move to Core 2 Duo one of these days), and 2 GB Crucial Ballistix DDR2 PC6400, and two 1TB SATA 300 hard drives (Seagate, I think). Cooling the processor is a rather enormous Zalman CNPS9500 AT copper heatsink fan, and the PSU is a 650 watt Antec EarthWatts ATX12V (this is my first PCI-E build, and I was a little chagrined that I had to go out and buy a new power supply).

The HTPC software is Sage TV, and I'll be using a USB 2.0 -based Hauppauge HV PVR and WinTV HVR-1600 PCI card for video capture.

Hey y'all - good morning to you! Uh, on the Amazon page there's a line that says: "Buy Windows Vista Today, Get Windows 7 for $9.99"
Can this tech-tard reasonably assume that Windows 7 will be compatible with Vista?!

You mean, as in, you'll be able to reasonably painlessly upgrade from Vista to Windows 7? I suppose.

(Currently, I'm hunting for my product activation key that came with the release candidate download. Grrr.)

157 Dar ul Harb  Sat, Aug 15, 2009 10:19:19pm

The install is otherwise went well (I'm installing hardware specific drivers from the ASUS website right now.)

I believe you can still down load RC 7 for free (release candidate) and use it for a year without a license.

the only time I ever had trouble with Vista was when I used a single core processor. The installation process of Windows 7 has a simple upgrade feature as long as you're going from Vista.re: #45 Gella

with a Technet subscription you can download the RTM

re: #6 Sharmuta

We installed it on half the work computers and it looks pretty good. No complaints from the tech guys at all. They like it.

Sharmuta -

Waiting for two copies, a $49.95 32 bit Home Premium and a "freeb" upgrade 64 bit Home Premium. Suspect both will be here and installed by Thanksgiving - if not Halloween. From what I've seen, a worthwhile upgrade from Vista. My XP machines, however I will leave "as is." The Notebook would be marginal running 7, the desktop has too much sensitive information to take a chance on a "Clean Install" scenario at this point.

I've usually avoided the OS wars. My first few years in IT was with Macs (OS 8-OS-9; Apple talk and Novel Netware), but I've been supporting Windoze the last 6 or 7 years. It is ironic that with Windows 2008 Server Enterprise MS is now going back to the command shell. Part of my current job is supporting the MS Virtual Server environment. In this context, I do most of my support via scripts and Console Management snap-ins, and rarely touch the GUI.

I also vaguely remember MS version of Unix -does anyone remember Xenix? MS shelved Xenix when they believed the wave of the future was the GUI; their short lived partnership with IBM and OS/2 to develop a network OS was a drive in this direction. In those days, firms were either using Novel Netware or SCO-Unix, or SunOS.

I have the Win7 Ultimate RTM (MSDN member) installed on two PC's and love it. Much more responsive and user friendly than Vista.
