I always have this notion of being watched, you see. Not by other people. It was myself was watching me. Another me, a different fellow altogether. He never liked me. The way I behaved used to truly annoy him. And I was scared of him too.

So compared to that, my problems are really kind of small after all.

Key Feature Of Obama Health Plan May Be Out

Racing to regain control of the health-care debate, two top administration officials signaled Sunday that the White House may be willing to jettison a controversial government-run insurance plan favored by liberals.

I think cap & trade might be dead...at least for the moment...as close as the house vote was, I don't think the senate wants to touch it.

Agree. Keep your eyes on the ball; I sense they're trying to pull a fast one here and submit the same package under a different shell.

What they're hoping for is to get the opposition to declare "Woo Hoo! We won!" because one small portion of the bill got called something else, then happily pass the remaining 90% unchanged. Even the 10% that got left behind can easily be picked up again in the future once the enormous bureaucratic framework to support it has been put in place. At which point there will never be any hope of turning back.

If I could get into one of those townhall meetings hosted by Hussein Dolt himself, I'd probably ask something along the lines of 'Mr. President- let's say your healthcare propsals are passed and they turn out to be even more costly and intrusive and even less effective as advertised. What provisions would there be to repeal the legislation that you signed off on?'

The important thing to watch here is an attempt to sneak the public option back in under another guise. They're already trying that, calling it a "competitive co-op" instead, although a glance at the description - which includes the provision of billions of dollars in startup money and further subsidization by taxpayers in the future if needed - makes it clear that this is the same old public option plan with a shiny new name badge.

The government needs to be kept off the playing field, where their access to virtually unlimited funds will quickly eliminate all other players.

Administration Official: "Sebelius Misspoke."

An administration official said tonight that Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius "misspoke" when she told CNN this morning that a government run health insurance option "is not an essential part" of reform. This official asked not to be identified in exchange for providing clarity about the intentions of the President. The official said that the White House did not intend to change its messaging and that Sebelius simply meant to echo the president, who has acknowledged that the public option is a tough sell in the Senate and is, at the same time, a must-pass for House Democrats, and is not, in the president's view, the most important element of the reform package.

That's another good point. Trying to pass this, along with cap & trade, during the depths of a severe recession is utterly tone deaf. It shows a complete lack of experience and brains. A year from now - when there will almost certainly be a noticeable recovery underway, and with the midterms behind Congress - people will be feeling flush, and more likely to ignore what Washington is doing.

In fact, if Washington had been focusing on the current recession, it would probably be experiencing that recovery right now. But I suspect it's been part of the Administration's strategy to keep people in a state of fear over losing their jobs - and insurance coverage - thinking they would be more likely to support an "emergency" package passed in the depths of a crisis, so boosting the economy has taken a second seat because it's current state was seen as a bonus. That hasn't worked out so well, fortunately, but such callousness certainly isn't beyond this bunch.

Dylan Thomas had this to say about it: "Just the book to give your sister, if she's a loud, dirty, boozy girl."

Clip from an ongoing YouTube project of mine: Albert Einstein Sings!, an edu-tainment musical homage to the father of 20th-century physics, as well as being a blatant rip-off of Weird Al and early-'80s SNL. (They must've done 12 different spoof versions of "My Boyfriend's Back" -- which will also be covered by Mr. Einstein, rest assured.)

But this 40-sec clip (most of the song spoofs are much shorter) is a Janis Joplin tribute entitled "E > mc"...

Love the fucking idiots commenting on the Bangor Daily News article on how the state has absolutely no business buying the railroad tracks for the sake of keeping the railroad intact, but instead the tracks should be acquired and converted into a snowmobile trail...with the state of Maine's money.

/Once those rails get ripped out, they're not going back in, geniuses. Remember that the next time you're stuck behind a couple of slow-moving log trucks clogging up traffic in the main street of your town.

Hey- you're still here. I was reading an article from a Canadian newspaper (one that treated Media Matters as a reliable source) when they had this line towards the end:

Cal Jillson, a political science professor at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, agrees. He points to the woman at a recent town hall meeting in Arkansas who said she no longer recognized her country. "Whether she realizes it or not, she's talking about race. I suspect she doesn't recognize her country anymore because there is a black man residing in the White House."

For some reason, my first thoughts upon reading that was Jive-Ass Methodist thinks he's Deana-fucking-Troi?

Hey Sharmuta:

Remember the program we discussed yesterday (The Incredible Human Journey)?

Well, I downloaded it (yes, I know... but, the DVDs are not for sale in the US and the UK DVDs are in PAL format anyway, so it is not like I'm taking money away from the Beeb...)

Overall, I can understand some of the negative comments that are given the show... it has value, but I find it sort of "lite". Too much filler, not enough data. Probably best for the 10-13 year old.

Not of the David Attenborough category of production either.

If you can find it for free, then you might want to watch it, but I wouldn't spend money on it.

You're welcome.

One thing that bugs me about the show is that the host lets her present day worldview intrude too much. Usually subtle, but it is there. For example, in the third show, about humans in Europe, she crosses the Bosporus Straight... and says she is crossing from one continent into another.

However, that is not true... in reality, Europe is just a western appendage to Asia (which is why some people say "Eurasia")... and certainly from a geologic or biological view making the distinction at the Bosporus straight is artificial. Historically it is the division, but remember, those were European historians writing that history!

I think several of these 'misspeakings' are ways for the WH to gauge critical reaction. They float a trial balloon, basically, to see how people will react. Then they can backtrack and claim some official 'misspoke'--when in reality they were testing the waters.

They've done it before with some civil liberties issues.

And hi, everybody. :)

This is a really good article about nirther madness, town hall rage, and other such things.

In America, Crazy is a Pre-Existing Condition

So the birthers, the anti-tax tea-partiers, the town hall hecklers -- these are "either" the genuine grass roots or evil conspirators staging scenes for YouTube? The quiver on the lips of the man pushing the wheelchair, the crazed risk of carrying a pistol around a president -- too heartfelt to be an act. The lockstep strangeness of the mad lies on the protesters' signs -- too uniform to be spontaneous. They are both. If you don't understand that any moment of genuine political change always produces both, you can't understand America, where the crazy tree blooms in every moment of liberal ascendancy, and where elites exploit the crazy for their own narrow interests.

No light yet at end of California real-estate tunnel
Commentary: Despite some claims, situation actually may be getting worse

Is California's real estate crash finally hitting bottom?

Some people think it might have.

But color me skeptical.

OK, there is some good news.

Subprime blight areas in the Central Valley and the Inland Empire, which led the crash, have been collapsing at a slightly slower pace recently.

According to Zillow, the real estate information company, median prices in Stockton -- a contender for the title of Subprime Central -- have been falling by a little over 2% percent a month for the past three months. That may sound pretty bad -- it is pretty bad -- but everything needs context: Last winter the rate was more than 3% a month, and early last year the rate was nearly 4%

I thought the stimulus bill was supposed to magically fix this?

Up and down. You won't see a clear direction till all this screwing around by the Dem's is done and investors can clearly see what is coming. This is one of the subtle costs to all the big government meddling that the left so loves to do, it muddy the water and it's hard to make long term investment decisions. During a harrowing mile-and-a- half ordeal in Snowmass Canyon, a mother guided the SUV carrying her three boys to safety with one hand on the brakes and the other on the steering wheel after a boulder smashed through the windshield and killed her husband.

The family from Missouri had just wrapped up a weeklong vacation in Snowmass when a rock about the size of carry-on luggage tumbled through their Chevrolet Tahoe about 4:30 p.m. Friday, hitting driver Tom Murphy on the side of his face and killing him instantly, said his wife, Jennifer Murphy, who was in the front passenger seat.

She immediately put the car in neutral, but it didn't slow down because they were on a downhill stretch on Colorado 82 about 4 miles southeast of Basalt. So, she grabbed the wheel with her right hand and pressed her left hand against the brakes.

"She was peeking up over the top to see where she was going and putting her hand back down on the brakes and doing that for a mile and a half," said Michelle Haggarty, Jennifer's sister, retelling the story on her sister's behalf from Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs.

SNIP

Since the 1980s, more than a dozen people have been killed in Colorado by rocks that tumbled onto their vehicles.

Stocks Slide on Economy Concern; Yen, Dollar, Treasuries Gain

Aug. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Stocks fell around the world, the yen and the dollar advanced and Treasuries rose as investors speculated that a rally in riskier assets has outpaced the prospects for economic growth.

The MSCI World Index of 23 developed nations sank 1.5 percent at 11:12 a.m. in London, the biggest retreat in a month. Futures on the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index slid 1.9 percent, while China’s Shanghai Composite Index slumped the most since November. The yen strengthened against all 16 of the most-traded currencies tracked by Bloomberg, while the dollar advanced against every one except the yen. The yield on the benchmark 10- year Treasury note dropped to its lowest level this month. Copper and oil declined for a second day.

Equities tumbled after a government report showed Japan’s economy grew less than economists estimated in the second quarter, reigniting concern that a five-month, 52 percent rally in the MSCI World was overdone. The tally of failed U.S. banks this year climbed to 77 last week, while the Reuters/University of Michigan index of consumer sentiment in America showed an unexpected decrease.

Let's see, over 6 million unemployed in the U.S. and growing. GDP contracting.

Yep, no reason for folks to be upset, it's all Bush's fault.

Exactly. There was a time for complaining about and focussing on the extremists on the left acting out crazily - I've been there, done it, will do it again when it becomes appropriate - but that time is not now, when political life is being disrupted and poisoned by the craziness of the right.

Sports Nerd Corner:

I have long said that Tiger Woods can be beat on Sunday's if the other golfers would just not fall apart and self destruct. Woods rarely shoots light out on Sunday's he usually cards a round around par and watches as his competition falls apart. That means, if you shoot a good round on Sunday and put pressure on Woods, he is beatable.

Well, the competition is starting to figure that out:

Y.E. Yang Topples Tiger Woods in the PGA Championship

Yang became the first Asian-born player to win a major Sunday with a stunning performance in the PGA Championship, memorable as much for his clutch shots as the player he beat.

Woods was 14-0 when he went into the final round of a major atop the leaderboard. He had not lost any tournament around the world in nine years when leading by two shots.

None of that mattered to Yang, a 37-year-old South Korean who hit the shots everyone expected from Woods. Leading by one on the final hole, Yang slayed golf's giant with a hybrid 3-iron that cleared the bunker and settled 12 feet from the cup.

Yang made the birdie to close with a 2-under 70, giving him a three-shot victory when Woods missed yet another par putt and shot 75.

It's not a matter of denying fault on one side, just a case of focussing on the issues that actually happen to be current.

Yes, exactly. These things are cyclical too-- when there's a right-leaning administration, you get left-wing craziness; when there's a liberal administration, you see right-wing craziness. Some of it is a constant, because there are always crazy people and no one 'side' has a monopoly on crazy. And some of it is always spiking upward as a reaction to who is in power, and as a reaction to being out of power.

For example, the last time we had a surge in abortion clinic bombings and abortion-related violence was also during a Democratic admin. The anti-choice people get especially active when someone is in power who they perceive to be 'more liberal' on abortion.

If someone did do a comparative study on left and right wing extremism, I think they'd find that a constant underlying theme on both sides would be related to feeling powerless.
(this applies on an individual level too, to the lone wolves who commit horrible acts. They're always people who are powerless, or feel themselves to be.)

Poll: 57% don't see stimulus working

WASHINGTON — Six months after President Obama launched a $787 billion plan to right the nation's economy, a majority of Americans think the avalanche of new federal aid has cost too much and done too little to end the recession.
POLL RESULTS: Six questions
A USA TODAY/Gallup Poll found 57% of adults say the stimulus package is having no impact on the economy or making it worse. Even more —60% — doubt that the stimulus plan will help the economy in the years ahead, and only 18% say it has done anything to help improve their personal situation.

That skepticism underscores the challenge Obama faces in trying to convince the public that the stimulus has helped turn the economy around. It also could complicate the administration's plans to overhaul the nation's health care system.

"This is a wake-up call for the administration." says House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, R-Va. "People see the stimulus hasn't worked, and now you want to lay on over $1 trillion in a health care plan."

re: #593 Syrah

There is no right to insurance.

There is no right to have roads or armed protection, but we provide the poor with both. It is not about what is a right. It is about what we need to do to make this country function without fear of demagogues being voted into power and costing us far more than subsidizing a few million medical insurance premiums. To say we can't afford it - look what we can afford. People are dying for these things. We think we need them that bad.

It is the budget that is "busted." It is the budget that needs to be over hauled. People are dying because people didn't pay their mortgages. People are dying because GM can't run it's company. People are dying because we are in unnecessarily protracted wars, because we won't drill our own oil, because we refuse to truly go nuclear. How much would a two dollar fee on each ticket to a sporting event raise? There's something not workable about a family with money going to a ballgame, while someone in a poor family not only doesn't go to the ball-game, but they, or their children, die of some curable condition.

Billions of dollars in startup money to whom? If from this administration & congress, I'd think most likely to ACORN, La Raza, SEIU or affiliates.

310 quickjustice  Mon, Aug 17, 2009 5:21:56am

It's a logical fallacy to to try to define the current situation as "rage" unconnected to anything rational. "Rage" is only successful politically when it's connected to real and widespread grievances. Without real and widespread grievances, rage simply doesn't work as a political tactic.

This rage is different both in degree and in kind. It's connected directly to widespread fear about changes to the health care system that makes thing worse.

I'd bet money that this announcement by Obama that he is givig up the "public option" is simply a tactic to get moderate Democratic Senators on board. Pelosi will jam it though the House, and the moderates will pass it in the Senate.

Then when the bill goes back to the House-Senate committee, the Democrats will put the "public option" in the reconciliation bill and then force it it though Congress...

Lowe's forecasts fall short as it trims store openings

Lowe's Cos. said Monday that its fiscal second-quarter profit fell 19% and it decided not to pursue several potential future-store projects and lower North American store opening plan for next year.

It also gave second-half forecasts that fell short of Wall Street expectations. Lowe's (LOW 20.24, -2.59, -11.35%) shares dropped 12% in pre-market trading.

Net income dropped to $759 million, or 51 cents a share, from $938 million, or 63 cents a share, in the year-earlier period. Sales fell 4.6% to $13.8 billion from $14.5 billion. On a same-store sales basis, they declined 9.5%, the Moorseville, North Carolina-based company said. Analysts, on average, estimated the company would earn 54 cents a share on sales of $14.3 billion, according to FactSet.

The company said it took a pre-tax charge of $48 million in the quarter to re-evaluate its future store-expansion plan, including cutting the new openings in North America to 35 to 45 next year.

Bear in mind that the ripple effect of the Colonial Bank failure over the weekend will also hit the market today.

The Administration has figured out that the frontal attack isn't working, so they're recalibrating their strategy. A "reform" health care bill will pass. The question is how much they strip from it to make it politically palatable.

The Administration needs a fig leaf on health care reform so they can declare victory and move on to immigration "reform". Obama calculates that that will tear apart the Republican Party. He's right.

Where he's wrong is in thinking the Republicans are his problem. They're not. His problem is grassroots opposition that transcends the Republicans. Obama is single-handedly forcing a new opposition coalition to emerge. That coalition has Independents and conservative Democrats in it. I think they'll eventually co-opt the old, discredited GOP.

So, ObamaCare won't pass the Senate with a "public option" and won't pass the House without one. It's a Democrat circular firing squad!

Disruptors are employed by several alien species in this series, including Romulans, Klingons, Breen, Cardassians, and Orions in their personal and military small arms as well as being mounted as cannon, emitters, turrets, and banks. Only the first three are known to have type-3 disruptors, the most advanced developed so far, by the 24th century. Disruptors cause damage by exciting the atoms in the target and thus breaking the bonds between them.

Canada's single payer system is imploding. I know! - lets try it here because the precious all-knowing Progressives insist.

"We all agree that the system is imploding, we all agree that things are more precarious than perhaps Canadians realize..."

Of course getting out of the single payer government run rat hole isn't easy. Re-privatization probably isn't in the vocabulary.

re: #323 quickjustice

There's no doubt the new health care system, controlled by the government, will be unionized. And based upon their behavior, there little doubt in my mind that SEIU has been promised that they'll be the union in the driver's seat. From New York's experience with the SEIU, I'd say union control means a fast track to systemic bankruptcy.

Excerpt from [Link: blog.heritage.org...]
But SEIU’s history shows greater care for union dues than your health. In October 2005, the SEIU and their sister organization ACORN ruthlessly bussed in vanloads of sick supporters to two Chicago emergency rooms to teach them a lesson for not unionizing by overloading the ER and harassing the doctors and nurses on duty. The result was a very long day and insufficient care for all.

Perhaps that opposition might title themselves...Nationalists?

France Fights Universal Care's High Cost

France claims it long ago achieved much of what today's U.S. health-care overhaul is seeking: It covers everyone, and provides what supporters say is high-quality care. But soaring costs are pushing the system into crisis. The result: As Congress fights over whether America should be more like France, the French government is trying to borrow U.S. tactics.

The Daughter was out this weekend, and we were chatting in that listless way that one does when all interesting topics have been exhausted.

I asked about one of her online 'friends' that she used to vacation with. They had attended several comicons, sci-fi gatherings, and those other places where otherwise reasonable adult-aged individuals can dress up in heroic costumes without attracting attention from the fellows in white coats and large nets.

The Daughter said that back in January, she'd loaned her friend $200 to help her through a tough stretch, and hadn't heard from her since.

I was astounded, and a bit envious. Man, I've spent a lot more than $200 several times without getting completely shed of an individual.

Sounds like value for the dollar, to me.

But Killian - it's freee. and with freee comes high quality.

One of my neighbors visited France and complained about the high prices of ordinary items. Then she said - "oh but the health care is free". I looked at her and said - "no it isn't... You just pay for it in other ways."

Financial exploitation and backstabbing happen all too frequently in cyberspace, sadly.

While I've never been expoited financially, online friends can be very good at backstabbing via chatrooms and emails. I've had some very painful experiences over the years, and I don't give people my trust very readily these days.

Unfortunately the internet lends itself to bad behaviour, in many ways. Some of it is the anonymity. Some of it is just that in cyberspace, you don't have the social clues that you do in person about someone's trustworthiness, etc. It's also a medium where misunderstandings can easily arise too.

re: #349 opnion

I agree with you in part. The old Reagan coalition doesn't exist anymore. The old conservative Democrats (G-d bless them!) are literally dying out. The new coalition must engage young voters in the way Obama did.

Remember, Obama tailored his message to co-opt GOP rhetoric. He was going to do government business a new way, and move beyond partisan considerations. He was to be a uniter, not a divider. He was going to cut taxes for 95% of Americans. He was going to make government work better. This are themes that appeal to young voters.

Of course, he lied to the centrists, and he lied to his left-wing base. He's a corporatist who advocates for "private-public" partnerships with large corporations. That means bailouts for the big boys who are connected to the power establishment, paid for by you and me. The Wall Street executives who engineered the credit meltdown should be unemployed, together with their congressional counterparts. Instead, they're pulling in larger bonuses than ever.

Thank you, Barack Obama, for showing us who you really are!

I'm totally psyched, just based on the television ads. Pitt looks to be in rare form, and when he's in the right role, he's one of our best actors. He may be "whipped silly" in real life, but on-screen, he's pretty great.

It's fake. Straightdope.com has the following, on this topic. You should know, the Jew-haters have been manufacturing lies for centuries.

Was Franklin antisemitic? Based on what we know now, almost certainly not. The Anti-Defamation League tells the whole story here. [Link: www.adl.org...]

Briefly put, an allegation began circulating in the antisemitic press in the early 1930s that Franklin had given a speech at the Constitutional Convention in 1787 warning that Jews posed a grave danger to the United States and should be expelled. Mainstream historians are unanimous in declaring the supposed speech a fraud. No documentation exists, the sentiments expressed are at odds with Franklin's known views and actions regarding Jews, and the timing, coinciding with the rise of Nazism, is highly suspicious. Whatever failings Franklin may have had, it's doubtful antisemitism was one.
