It’s your traditional midday open thread, with open registration for a limited time.

Read all the rules before you register, and commit them to memory. The short version:

  • Don’t register with a proxy.
  • Don’t register with a throwaway email address.
  • Don’t register more than one account at a time.
  • Don’t be a jerk.
  • Don’t be a troll.
  • Don’t be a sock puppet. Stinky hates sock puppets.
  • Do play nice.

And then everything will be groovy.

UPDATE at 8/17/09 1:18:04 pm:

The registration window has closed.

9 Kosh's Shadow  Mon, Aug 17, 2009 12:07:43pm

So Mubarak is going to be meeting Obama soon. I wonder where I can get the KGB tapes of that meeting. I'm sure there will be a lot of blaming Israel.
Even though Mubarak said that the Arabs will recognize Israel only after a "just and comprehensive" peace solution. Of course, by that, he means one that ends Israel as a Jewish state.

Has Obama met Netanyahu yet?

"Groovy," an apt word for the 40th anniversary of Woodstock. Got back from the "Heroes of Woodstock" show at Bethel Woods. Country Joe definitely has milked a career out of that one song, Canned Heat still playin' some hot blues, Big Brother and the Holding Co. suprisingly good without Janis (the gal they have can belt it out), Ten Years After super-groovy (kicked ass), Jefferson Starship plays a solid "St. Stephen" with T.C. from the Dead but really need Grace, Jorma, and Jack, Mountain and Leslie West ripped it up and Leslie got married too. Had to skip Levon Helm's set (saw him last year at Mt Jam-definitely worth seeing) had a long drive back to Woodstock (don't believe that hour away nonsense, go that fast and you won't realize you vaporized a deer til your at St. Peter's gates). Groovy

Are you gonna wait for one of your family members to be assaulted or killed by an illegal alien?” Included among Amato's fellow speakers at the September 2007 event were anti-Semite Paul Topete, lead singer of the anti-government, conspiracy-promoting band Poker Face and Mariann Davies, a Vice Chair of YDSFM."

"The National Rifle Association and other 'gun rights' groups need to send a message about 'gun responsibilities' to their members and all gun owners. Loaded weapons at political forums endanger all involved, distract law enforcement, and end up stifling debate. Presidential protesters need to leave their firearms at home - no exceptions."

President Obama has been invited to eulogize Walter Cronkite, the legendary CBS News anchorman, at a memorial service in Manhattan next month, network sources said.

Former President Bill Clinton has accepted an invitation to speak at the service, to be held at Lincoln Center at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 9.

Also speaking at the service will be Katie Couric, anchor and managing editor of the "CBS Evening News"; Sean McManus, president of CBS News and Sports; and Leslie Moonves, CBS Corp.'s president and chief executive officer.

Performances are scheduled by Jimmy Buffett and Mickey Hart, who was a Grateful Dead drummer.

With the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Child joined the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). (She initially attempted to enlist in the United States Navy but was turned down because of her height.

This is one reason I am opposed to open carry legislation in Texas. The open display of firearms can obviously have an intimidating effect on criminals, but it can have the same effect on law-abiding citizens, especially around a public event that is likely to become acrimonious.

Anre: #153 Killgore Trout

True but these guys are just as potentially dangerous. They are also a distraction to security. Imagine if Muslims were doing this after 9-11. This is just too dangerous.

I agree with others from #144 (one of the few times I agree with the Brady Bunch).

re: #159 Dianna

I'm of five different minds about it. I seriously think that people would be much, much more polite if open carriage were allowed. On the other hand, given some people I've known, I can picture someone snapping badly. On the gripping hand, I swear, there are some people whose behavior would be seriously improved by a flesh wound. Particularly teenagers!

Licensed concealed carry has all the stated benefits of open carry, and then some, since nasty types don't know which law-abiding citizens are armed and which ones aren't. It does not have the same drawback, though, since it is anonymous and is therefore much less easy to construe as a specific threat.

Enjoy the show, you may want to get there early and see the museum (figure 3 hours). It is a real nice place to see a concert but the town's infrastucture isn't really built to handle a sell-out crowd of 17,000 yet alone a 1/5 million 40 years ago.

More (Guns) The Merrier!

We're still trying to piece this together. But according to CNN's Ed Henry, who was there in person, there was not one but TWO men outside the Obama event in Phoenix today with AR-15 assault rifles. It's like a fad.

One man, whose presence we noted earlier, was an African-American man who didn't seem to make completely clear what his political position was. But the second, who we haven't seen any pictures of, was apparently holding his assault rifle while chanting against socialism and denouncing Obama's policies.

As noted from time to time, not all liberals are anti-gun and a fair number of lefty radicals are not. Imagine swarms of them showing up armed in response to these gun-toting wingnuts. In turn, more of the latter will bring their own guns in response to armed communards running loose in the streets. It's not hard to imagine how this will end up.

Man Carrying An Assault Rifle And Pistol Outside Obama Event (video)

Looks like there was another gun there. Fat white guy with a pistol.

Whoa. I'm watching at work with the sound off, so I don't know exactly what's going on.

Let me propose the following hypotheses:

1. These folks got the idea of bringing guns to a presidential event from William Kostric's doing so.

2. The more people keep doing this, the more it will inspire other people to do this.

3. Having more and more people bringing firearms to demonstrations at presidential events will eventually result in someone getting shot. Perhaps some union thug will be beating up an anti-Obama protester, and an armed anti-Obama protester will feel compelled to respond with gunfire. Or perhaps the Secret Service will shoot one of the armed protesters. Asking the Secret Service to keep the president 100% safe, without shooting people, when there are people carrying assault rifles around, is asking a lot.

Let me propose that if you get within a kilometer (or whatever the Secret Service considers too close) of the President with a weapon, you will be shot or at least arrested by the Secret Service.

We can conclude instantly that they are not within a kilometer (or whatever the Secret Service considers too close) of the President.

Since these assholes are instantly on Fox. We can conclude that Fox is purposefully creating a pre-planned propaganda campaign that Americans are so angry about health care, they are bringing guns. This is pure agit-prop. This is a pure set up - and yes it is very dangerous. There are very many at Fox, who most likely need to be put in jail for this.

Huge Santa Barbara County wildfire caused by marijuana farm operated by a Mexican drug organization; suspects at large in forest
August 16, 2009 %P% 8:26 am

A fire that has burned more than 75,000 acres in Santa Barbara County over the last week was started in an illegal marijuana growing area operated by a Mexican drug organization, authorities said.

Authorities said they confirmed that the blaze, which is burning out of control, started in a cooking area of the pot farm. They believe those responsible are still in the forest area trying leave the forest by foot.
"The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Narcotics Unit has confirmed that the camp at the origin of the fire was an illegal marijuana operation believed to be run by a Mexican national drug organization," according to a statement from the Los Padres National Forest. "The Narcotics Unit has been working in the area within the last month eradicating other nearby marijuana cultivation sites."

The vast majority of gun owners in open carry states know the rules but the average responsible gun owner wouldn't bring a gun to a political event. These people have researched the fine print in the laws and know exactly how far they can push it. Most people wouldn't take the risk of going over the line. It's some sort of instigation. I think the USA will be involved in more and more asymmetric warfare, not large scale battles that were envisioned to take place in Europe should the Soviets invade.

I have nothing against Obama wanting to develop proven technologies that are well-suited toward asymmetric warfare in Afghanistan. For example, camel saddles. Go for it. However, I'd sleep a lot better at night if I were confident that the U.S. armed forces could easily take down the massive conventional military forces of Iran and North Korea, among others.

Me personally, I would not have selected national defense as the only major part of the budget to see a decrease in spending, while everything else goes through the roof with the Stimulus Bill.

383 lawhawk  Mon, Aug 17, 2009 1:19:49pm

re: #343 HAL2010

So having weapons that were relevant 20 years ago in the defence budget today makes sense to you? Really?

Weapons relevant in the budget 20 years ago include the A-10 (that has repeatedly been sought to be canned in favor of others, and maintained in budgets thereafter); the F-15, F-16, M1 Abrams, M2 Bradley, etc. The aircraft are quite useful. So are tanks and infantry support vehicles.

New versions of aircraft that do similar jobs are necessary because the technology improves - hence the M1-A2, the F-15E, A-10II, etc.

Some aircraft get retired and replaced with more capable craft - the JSF and F-22. Others are replaced because they're too expensive - the F-14 come to mind.

Humvees have multiple shortcomings, but are still produced, even as Strykers and other vehicles are now utilized in numbers because of better occupant protection from IEDs.

The Pentagon procurement is a nightmare (and the humorous Pentagon Wars is the tip of the iceberg).

Fact is that we never know what kind of threats we're going to face. The Taliban will be a persistent threat, but threats will continue from likely sources and instigators like China, Russia, North Korea and Iran, and unlikely places. The problem is an Administration that looks to cut defense spending while facing divergent threats - the current one.

Combine that with the way that it can take years before a weapons program becomes active in the military.

Rival bands of political wack-jobs actually did shoot it out on the streets of Greensboro NC some years ago, with the Communist Workers Party on one side and local KKK and Nazis on the other.

Five people were killed and it could have been much worse; it was a very small event with only some media and a few gawkers in addition to the nutbars themselves.

The instigation is exactly the spectacle that Fox and other Right Wing pundits want. It is the notion that the average American is so hopping mad about this - look how far they will go... It opens up a giant pandora's box, but the people puling these strings are not interested in consequences.

The Abrams has been quite reliable, and has had upgraded electronics.
We aren't building them new, but taking existing ones, stripping them and rebuilding them. Military channel and similar networks have shown this process. R. Lee Ermy says none have been lost to enemy fire, so there probably is a reason we're just rebuilding the ones we have, with upgraded electronics, than building whole new ones.
I could see designing a new powerplant that didn't gulp fuel, though, but it could be used in existing hulls.

(Also, IIRC, the Obama budget combined the continuing resolutions for Iraq and Afghanistan with the base budget, reduced that, and then said they increased military spending because it was higher than the base budget without the continuing resolutions.)

One of John Entwhistle's, wasn't it? I forgave him because there are so few science fiction songs.

So few Science-fiction songs?!? You mean to tell me that you have never heard of Hawkwind? They were one of the progenitors of fantasy/sci-fi/space rock. Micheal Moorcock wrote a couple of songs for them and they returned the favor on an album he did in the '70's.

Get the following albums from Amazon thru Charles's link: Quark, Strangeness and Charm (with a tune inspired by Zelany's novel of the same name "Damnation Alley"), P.X.R. 5, The Xenon Codex, Hall of the Mountain Grill, Levitation, 25 Years On (by the offshoot Hawklords), In Search of Space and the classic Warrior on the Edge of Time. Be forewarned that there are a LOT of iffy recordings out there and it is advisable to stay with the major label, studio releases at first. There are some real poor quality bootlegs out there.

While he was purely an instrumentalist on guitar, Moog and keys, a lot of Richard Pinhas/Heldon's material was also influenced by scifi authors and Norman Spinrad did some vocal work (note that i didn't say he sang) on East/West.

And it seems the US is the target of almost the rest of the world, so perhaps we need it.
(Also, IIRC, the Obama budget combined the continuing resolutions for Iraq and Afghanistan with the base budget, reduced that, and then said they increased military spending because it was higher than the base budget without the continuing resolutions.)

Target of the rest of the world?

re: #41 Sharmuta

Having missed all the past open registrations I finally made the window today. I promise not to meltdown or flounce off in a huff for at least a few days.

What brought me here? I'm actually a (D) from Cambridge, MA (!!) although I moved further out of Boston and bought a place up in western maine. Despite being a bleeding-heart Dem. I've also got a carry permit, a few handguns and some reloading gear from IPSC/IDPA days.

I own 25% of the small biotechnology consulting business that I started with friends a few years back. The healthcare debate has been really interesting as my company needs to provide best-of-the-best benefits in order to attract world class talent. We currently pay 100% of the cost for top-tier PPOs for all our employees and I've regularly seen our healthcare costs rise 30% year over year. Despite the fact that the cost is a tax benefit for us it's really hard for a small company with less than 20 staff to find insurance of any kind. The other creepy thing is learning just how much our 52 year old employee swings our costs compared to the rest of the 30-somethings on the plan. The insurance broker actually told me in dollar figures how much $$ we'd save if we did not have the 52 year old on staff which I personally thought was highly inappropriate but probably normal in business. I'm mostly a science/technical nerd but small business stuff has been oddly interesting when viewed behind the scenes.

I'm mostly here because I'd like to be a Republican but the current crop of anti-science & social conservatives leading the party (both organizationally and as running candidates) make that impossible so now I'm self-identifying as an independent. It was probably Charles's posts on creationism and anti-science efforts that brought me here in the first place.

Given the time it takes to develop a weapon system, (which puts it a few years ahead), we need to be prepared for threats from China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea, and terrorists, possibly with nuclear weapons from those countries.

re: #409 HAL2010

Yeah. I think you underestimate the scale of the US defense budget. Not only did it rise 5.7 % in the 09 fiscal year, compared to 08,

The Obama adminstration asked the Joint Chiefs to cut the Pentagon's 2010 budget request by more than ten percent, or about $55 billion. That would still represent an 8% increase compared to FY2009, and would be no less than what the Bush administration had estimated for FY2010. This is at a time when the "stimulus bill" has produced staggering, unprecedented increases in spending in most other areas. So I'd say we're both kinda right.

it is also "almost as much as the rest of the world's defense spending combined [Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

I've seen that comparison made. I don't have a problem with it.

To say that that the US should invest in "camel saddles" is ridiculous. I would hope that people at LGF would realise that this is a new form of warfare, of which there will be more. Not less.

I think that some people at LGF realize that there's a new form of warfare here, but have actually participated in it. I hope the Pentagon is busy figuring out how best to neutralize jihadis who hide behind children in public markets, after placing IEDs by the side of the road. But I also hope that they're ready to neutralize the 950,000-man Iranian army.

I still haven't figured out how checking an IP would help unless you just get lucky. IP's are assigned by your ISP every time you reboot/log on (unless you're paying for a fixed IP). You could get lucky and find that the poster hasn't done those things between getting banned and getting a new account, but I suspect that would be a long shot.

This is called a Dynamic IP address. Sometimes they change every time you reboot but normally if the same device (router/pc) is attached to your cable or dsl modem it will continue to receive the same IP address as long as the detected Mac Address of the device doesn't change.

Well if you are running a DHCP server in your router or modem then you have a public IP address from your provider which is shown when you hit the net and a private IP address which is usually 192.168.1.1 (for linksys). Addresses assigned by the DHCP server (router or modem) will be in the 192.168.x.x range but that is not shown when you hit an internet site, only your public address. Lame chart below...

QUARK & P.X.R. 5 have been in heavy rotation for the last week or so.

And if you can find a copy of the tune, check out the title track to The Tangent's "Not as Good as the Book" release of a year ago. More of a "what in the hell happened to all the great future that the scfi novels promised us" song than anything else. Be sure and check out the rest of their stuff, especially if you love lots of keyboards and just fantastic prog-rock. The website is being revamped, check it out!

Growing threat to Hamas: Gazans who think it has sold out

"New groups of young people, they are fed up with what they see as Hamas' betrayal of the cause – of Islamic ideology and of jihad," says Mordechai Kedar, a lecturer in Arabic Studies at Israel's Bar-Ilan University and senior researcher at the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies. "They view Hamas as having become too bureaucratic, too moderate, and they want action."

Hamas is a militant Islamist organization but also a nationalist group largely focused on the creation of a Palestinian state and opposition to Israel. The US calls it a terrorist organization and its rival, the secular Fatah party, says it wants to impose Islamic rule on the Palestinians. The group has been willing to compromise with secular Palestinians on some social issues and has shown little interest over the years in Al Qaeda's desire for a global jihad to spread Islamic law.

In recent months, it has also withheld rocket attacks against Israeli towns.

But it has not been shy about consolidating its position inside Gaza. The businesses allied with the movement have benefited from its time in power and its security services have taken an active interest in possible threats to its power – Islamist and otherwise.

Charles would not have access to MAC addresses (unless he knows some hardcore javascript exploits!).

MAC addresses don't leak beyond the local subnet. Your ISP and the upstream DHCP server knows your MAC (or the MAC of the wireles router that you've attached to your broadband connection) but otherwise that data is not of a type that would show up in any sort of website log.

Better check your credit card and bank statements...oops
US man 'stole 130m card numbers'

US prosecutors have charged a man with stealing data relating to 130 million credit and debit cards.

Officials say it is the biggest case of identity theft in American history.
They say Albert Gonzales, 28, and two unnamed Russian co-conspirators hacked into the payment systems of retailers, including the 7-Eleven chain.

Prosecutors say they aimed to sell the data on. If convicted, Mr Gonzales faces up to 20 years in jail for wire fraud and five years for conspiracy.

I was kind of wondering what he got up to after leaving the Attorney General post.

One of my neighbors is a complete wine snob. They came over for my birthday and brought a French red, circa 1960-something. Much ceremony in opening and serving. I took one swallow, gulped it down, nodded enthusiastically and said, "mmm, yummy!" When they weren't looking, I poured my glass full down the sink.

About 100 protesters heckled former US Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee on Monday as he attended a function to support Jewish settlements in mainly Arab east Jerusalem.

Two dozen right-wing Israelis staged a counter-protest, waving huge flags and cheering Huckabee, who has been touted as a possible Republican candidate in 2012.

Today's NYT contained a truly contemptible op-ed by one Richard Dooling, a minor novelist whom even a lit-freak like me had never heard of before. It was a slash-job on old people. As in, after 85 they should be cut off from Medicare. Seriously.

This guy ought to be run out of whatever town he lives in by a mob of oldsters on mobility scooters (which he doesn't think they need).

Below my letter to the editor, for the record, in case it gets spiked.

Congratulations on the appearance of what must be a new low in the public discourse on aging ("Health Care's Generation Gap", August 17).

Richard Dooling takes us on a suggestive ride, starting with memories of money wasted on "patients who would never regain consciousness [...]." Then we're told that "patients [...] gave the hospitals liens on their homes to pay for this care." Impressive, those unconscious patients! But never mind, maybe it was their families who signed the papers. How dare they spend their money that way.

Next we get horror visions of "titanium-knee [sic] replacements" for octo- and nonagenarians, and old folks getting prescriptions for "scooters and end-of-life" care. I see it all the time: comatose useless breathers with needlessly large carbon footprints whizzing around my neighborhood or whooping it up on their unnecessary new joints in the local dives.

I didn't believe for one moment that the voluntary end-of-life counseling envisioned in the health-care package would end in Sarah Palin-around-with-scaremongers-esque "death panels", but that's because I'm relatively confident that Mr Dooling, novelist, would not be allowed anywhere near them. I hope. Because I expect his advice to my octogenarian friend now recovering from a pelvis fracture, but otherwise fine, would be to stop acting so selfish and quit expelling CO2. "And your little dog, too."

Perhaps Dooling would like to set us all an example by voluntarily retiring from the carbon-based community when he reaches the age when he'll start extracting money from the Medicare system. That will be in about ten years. As his slightly younger contemporary, I'll be watching.

You are a prime example of why the progressives are calling us seething and raging lunatics. Just because a editorial appears in the NYT about shutting old people out of Medicare after a certain age, it doesn't mean that you go flouncing off and setting up a straw man about this.

It's very possible that this gentleman has a good point, or at least a point that will get national and international coverage, a few invites to all the talking head shows, and at least 3 book deals and a position on the health care czar's death panel.

But really, no matter what you think of this nice persons editorial, it's always possible that next week he will remove the language about removing seniors over 85 from medicare and change that to a reasonable age of, let's say, 86.

In the least this is reactionary on your part, at the most, probably racist in whole cloth.

One of my neighbors is a complete wine snob. They came over for my birthday and brought a French red, circa 1960-something. Much ceremony in opening and serving. New Joke, hot off the email:

The Coach of the New Orleans Saints was talking to his assistants. "Boys, we could go all the way this year if we had a decent quarterback. We've got everything else, just not a thrower. Anyone got any ideas?"

The TV was on CNN as they spoke and the coach noticed new film from Afghanistan. This Afgani ran through machine gun fire and stopped long enough to hurl a hand grenade through a third story window. Then there were three Marines and this Afgani in a foxhole with a lot of Taliban attacking, the Marines kept handing him hand grenades and he's stand up and throw them, kept the Taliban on the run.

"THat's the guy we need!" The coach exclaims. He hires a plane, flies to Afghanistan, and signs the guy! And as predicted, he leads them to the Superbowl!

The Afgani calls home. "Mom! We won the Super Bowl!"

"Who cares, Abdul? Listen, while you have been off winning your football game your sister has been shot and both of your brothers have been beaten. Come home right now!"

"But Mom...!"

"I said COME HOME! And if you aren't here soon I'll never forgive you for making us move to New Orleans!"

I remember, but I thought that was a fat white guy?

We need a program! We can't tell the players without one!

Fat White Guy had a pistol. I think he's the guy that was interviewing Skinny Black Guy with an AR15. There was another guy who we haven't seen yet (Mystery Guy) who had an AR 15 and was shouting anti-Obama slogans and heathcare reform supporters.

753 Ben Hur  Mon, Aug 17, 2009 2:51:58pm

re: #716 Dianna

Um, he was standing in a crowd full of folks waving "Reform Now!" signs. Those are Obama supporters, generally, aren't they?

"Reform" is code for "black," much like "Socialist."

The only thing that ISN'T code, is NeoCon.

judenfrei no jews alowed = anti semitism

and if jews aren't allowed in Jerusalem they aren't allowed anywere.

"Don't build here" isn't "no jews allowed" is it? I mean Arnold isn't gonna let me build a club house in capitol park across the street but that doesn't make him anti-State Worker (the furloughs on the other hand...) and doesn't keep me out of the park.

755 yochanan  Mon, Aug 17, 2009 2:52:09pm

if you say jews can't live in Jerusalem our holy city than you really don't accept jewish rights to live anywere. if the mer sight of a jew drives the anti semites crazy so be it. it shows that they really will never be peace

judenfrie was the anti semitic policy of not allowing jews to live some place in peace and freedom.

AND I have as yet to see "militias" getting into the Health Care fuss

I think some people believe that you can't get near any political event these days without having to wade through stormfronters, militia types, Paul-bots and tea-partiers extending their pinkies as they sip their refreshing beverages.

re: #721 Locker

I don't understand how "don't build here" is anti-semitic? I'm not a person of the Jewish faith and am in no position to judge. Just confused and request some clarification.

How about "Jews don't build in your own country" - does that do it for you?

Freezing expansion in one area guaranteed to sow conflict is not the same as forbidding residence in the city altogether. Conflating those two is disingenuous.

So armed conservatives should walk over to the pro Obama crowds, just in case they are "union thugs".

You missed the point. Where to begin? I was interpreting you as saying that the crowd could do a beat down on the guy. In any case it was a snarky joke.
My point however was that there is no reason to assume non-violence on the part of Obama supporters.

frankly your support for making parts of Jerusalem judenfrie i find anti semitic or self hating if your are jewish.

judenfrie is a Godwinian attack. It was a Nazi term used in the holocaust. You sound perilously close to calling Obama a Nazi. And me, which would be funny if it weren't reprehensibly offensive.

and frankly i don't care if you don't like it or not.

Lovely. While I think new settlements are counterproductive, I don't actually have a strong beef with your support of settlements per se. I know and understand both the moderate and extreme rationales for new settlements.

However you are ascribing extremist language to people who oppose your opinion. judenfrei is a Nazi term. Accusing anyone of supporting judenfrei is intentionally chosen language linking them with the Nazis. You've done it multiple times for Obama, and now with me. I think that is unnecessarily incendiary, and counterproductive any point you might want to make.

I got in! I can join the fun!

Slightly OT: Just spent the weekend with wife's family. One cousin needs a swift kick in the butt. 21 years old, never held a job, in and out of the joint, smokes a lot of dope, sleeps all day, etc etc etc. If people like her don't turn you into a conservative, I don't know what will.

Now back to our current programming.

Thanks Charles for letting me in!

A. If you do not care for what is being written and posted here at LGF, then stop coming here. No one is forcing you to read this blog. In that way, LGF is like a university class in that if you do not care to attend, you simply don't attend.

B. No flounce-offs please.
