Tech Note: About the New Double-Underlined Links

Technology • Views: 5,864

We’re trying out an advertising service called Infolinks, which analyzes the page content and creates links in the text that pop up a little dialog box when your mouse hovers over them, containing an advertisement or link to a related site. The dialog box goes away automatically when you move your mouse away from it, and there’s a delay built into the hovering routine, so it doesn’t pop up when you mouse passes over on the way to somewhere else. The Infolinks are green with a double underline, to let you easily distinguish between them and our normal links.

So don’t worry, your browser hasn’t caught a virus, the links are supposed to be there.

So Charles, how do we report if a bad advertisement pops up? I would presume you don't want your posts linking to the Discovery Institute or some Nirther nutter.

Check out the popup for Little Green Footballs above!

Comments are open and unmoderated, and do not necessarily reflect the views of Little Green Footballs.

Funny- the "do not" has a link.

Heh. You can put tags around the parts where you don't want the ads to appear -- I have them around the comments now. Looks like I may need to insert a few more of those tags.

9 Charles Johnson  Tue, Aug 18, 2009 11:16:06am

I checked out Infolinks pretty thoroughly before installing this, and they seem to be very reputable, and have high quality advertisers. There are a lot of positive comments about them on the web.

I like this advertising approach because it doesn't take up screen real estate.

I'll be quite frank here. I'm not fond of seeing these types of things when I click on a newspaper article. I find that when copying text, the cursor gets hung up on these types of links.

I've seen that too, but I tested Infolinks and it doesn't seem to have any problem with selecting text (in Safari anyway).

The bottom line here is ... the bottom line. Since PJ Media discontinued their advertising program, LGF's income has taken a serious hit. This is one of the less intrusive ways to go. If it turns out to pay well, I may be able to remove some of those annoying Google ads.

"conspiracy theory" and "moon landing" are picked for the previous article. For "conspiracy theory", I'm offered "Massive insight into Obama's New World Order conspiracy".

Is there any way you can prevent this service from linking to wackos, etc...? I'm sure they have someway, for instance to prevent a site devoted to children's education using their service and leading to porn links.

26 pre-Boomer Marine brat  Tue, Aug 18, 2009 11:24:01am

My express problem with them in news (NEWS) articles is because they want to toss you to something utterly unrelated. If Somali pirates have captured a cruise ship and are butchering the passengers, the link wants to advertise a luxury cruise to the sunny Caribbean.

I've looked into it, and you'd be hit with a power bill that would rise several hundred dollars for the year. Taking GM at its word, the daily cost to charge would be about $1.34 - multiplied by 365 and you get $489.10. The power isn't free, but it could be cheaper than the cost per gallon. The problem is that the cost for the car is such that you might never make back the money you would have saved if you bought a Prius or a Corolla instead.

Finally, an upside to patchouli!

And, that 230 mpg is only if you take short trips. The farther you drive, the more the gas motor has to kick in to charge the batteries. If you take a long trip, 150+ or so, your mpg drops to 60! This is a good start, the first ones are always more expensive. Once they solve some of the engineering, it might be as cost effective as a gas or hybrid is now.

Plus the 230 mpg is pure BS, no way. I bet it will get way less than 100, probably around 50. I don't think there would be a payback in fuel savings.

I've mentioned this before; the 230 mpg is because of the testing methodology. The mechanics of the Volt are such that it can maintain pure electric power - that is, infinite mpg - for 40 miles, then it can maintain a 50 mpg equivalent until you recharge it from home power.

After seeing Dianna's personal fundraising idea yesterday (she contributed based on how many socks tried to register) I was thinking this morning what I could do. I decided on this: Every time a person comes into my store reeking of patchouli, and I come here to vent (after venting the store, of course) I will contribute $10.00 to LGF. Finally, an upside to patchouli!

Hm.
Watchit, you may end up with a store full of lizards all wearing patchouli.

IIRC the new cars will be over 40 grand...can buy a lot of gas or diesel for a less expensive vehicle.

The first people that buy these will be for status. So, when they drive by a Prius owner, who are so fond of sneering at my gas burner, the Volt owner can look down their noses at them! I want to film that. Snooty meets even snootier!

It will completely depend on your driving style and needs. Someone who does 30-40 miles per day will find their mileage into the triple digits. Those who travel much further, or carry heavier loads, will see their fuel economy suffer.

The question then becomes just how we should measure fuel economy on these kinds of cars in a way that most people will drive them.

127 Douchecanoe and Ryan Too  Tue, Aug 18, 2009 11:48:59am

re: #122 lawhawk

The kicker is in the fact that heretofore, gas mileage has been a continuous distribution. That is to say, it can be safely assumed that a long enough driving test will establish a satisfactory "average" performance. With cars in the style of the Volt, the distribution is disjoint at the range where the recharge motor kicks in. EPA fuel mileage standards do not support disjoint distributions.

True, that's his job, he just doesn't do a good job of it in my opinion. I think the way he handled Major Garrett's spam question the other day illustrates it. The smart thing to have said was "I don't know, but I'll look into it and get back to you, the administration respects people's privacy." Instead he made it personal and ignored it. This is the kind of pattern we've seen over and over with him.

His school has busses but, they're for students who live 50 miles away. Some parents have second homes just for the week.

This would be my first winter "up hill" and the folks are already talking about this being a nasty one, considering the cooler temps already and the amount of moisture we have had all year.

I hope this doesn't break me. I had my first one already. 55 years old (I saw her license), in town to visit kids, bought some Cytomax. Did not look like a person who should smell of patchouli. Now I gotta find my PayPal password...

Argh... living at basically sea level, the most nauseous I can remember being was Dillon, the first time I went out to ski without stopping in DEN overnight first. Ours is getting up there too...14 now...he has bad hips. It will not be long now before we have to take in down. He's been our best dog ever. A mutt named JD. It is the only part of being a pet owner that I dislike. I can put up with the fur, eaten furniture, poop everywhere, drool...putting your baby down is about as hard as it gets. My condolences to you both for your loss.

What killed Mozart? Study suggests strep infection

For more than two centuries, the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart has endured — as has the speculation about what led to his sudden death at age 35 on Dec. 5, 1791.

Was the wunderkind composer poisoned by a jealous rival? Did he have an intestinal parasite from an undercooked pork chop? Could he have accidentally poisoned himself with mercury used to treat an alleged bout of syphilis?

A report in Tuesday's Annals of Internal Medicine suggests the exalted Austrian composer might have succumbed to something far more commonplace: a streptococcal infection — possibly strep throat — that led to kidney failure.
The researchers looked at death records in Vienna during the months surrounding Mozart's death — November and December 1791 and January 1792, and compared causes of death with the previous and following years.

Spokesman says Iran's supreme leader represents Mahdi
Muslims must unite for Islam's savior: Iran

The spokesman of Iran's Supreme Leader called on neighboring countries to mobilize their forces in preparation for the coming of the savior of Islam and to unite with the Islamic Republic in paving the way for his arrival, an Iranian news agency reported Sunday.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's spokesman, Ali Saeedi, said countries like Turkey, Iraq, Lebanon, Pakistan and Afghanistan should gather together all their forces in order to make drastic changes to prepare for the coming of al-Mahdi al-Montazar, Arabic for "the awaited guided one."

"We still have a long way to go in order to achieve this. We have to train honest forces that can stop the obstacles that may hinder the coming of the Mahdi like the United States and Israel," Saeedi said in statement posted by the Iranian Labor News Agency (ILNA).

Saeedi also said that the supreme leader of Iran is the direct representative of the Mahdi and that obeying him is like obeying the "guided one," who is the prophesized savior of Islam.

"Since the armed forces are commanded by the Supreme Leader, they are thus obeying the orders of the awaited Mahdi," Saeedi said, adding "the Revolutionary Guards and the armed forces in Iran hold religious authority to prepare for the appearance of the Mahdi."

The Mahdi is believed by Muslims to be arriving before Judgment Day to rid the world of injustice. Although present in both major Islamic schools of thought, the Mahdi is more prominent in the Shiite doctrine than the Sunni one.

Iranian opposition coalesce into a single movement

Far from stamping out the resistance movement triggered by a foolishly-rigged presidential election, the heavy-handed tactics of the Iranian mullahcracy has galvanized opposition to the regime. The AP reports that all of the leading figures of the protests following the rigged election have agreed to create a single movement for change in Iran. The show of unity will challenge Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and his ruling clique:

Iran’s top reformist leaders are all joining the “Green Path of Hope,” a political movement created to challenge the ruling system after a government crackdown crushed massive street protests.

The movement was created by Mir Hossein Mousavi, the top opposition candidate in disputed June 12 presidential elections.

Ali Reza Beheshti, a top aide to Mousavi, said Tuesday that former president Mohammad Khatami and defeated reformist candidate Mahdi Karroubi are joining the movement.

Beheshti is quoted in several reformist websites as saying that the “Green Path of Hope” will be a rallying point for the opposition to continue its campaign against the government of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, which it calls illegitimate.

The unity is fairly impressive. Two months after the protests filled the streets of Tehran, the various politicians — most of whom had been part of that same ruling clique — have avoided a power struggle of their own. That demonstrates the fervor of their protests, and also how little this has to do with a clash of personalities between Mousavi and Khamenei. It underscores the sincerity of the movement, at least for the moment.

Sometimes the links don't seem to appear. Scroll down the front page and you should see some.

I've limited them to just the body of the posts -- they won't show up in comments or other text. And there's a maximum of 12 per page, so they don't get overwhelming.

I wouldn't do this it weren't necessary, but Google ads are just not cutting it -- not just for revenue reasons, also because they're so freaking cheesy.

Well you could do it like Rawstory.com which I read from time to time. Run a big, public fund drive to redesign the site. Then when folks don't like it and complain, run another one to pay for "switching it back". That one cracked me up and needless to say I did not empty my piggy bank.

GM raises production as "clunker" sales rise

General Motors Co said on Tuesday it is increasing production for the second half of 2009 after a surge in sales ignited by the U.S. government's "Cash for Clunkers" incentives program.

CfC was never really about environmentalism; it is a targeted stimulus package, for the auto industry.

Mexican drug smugglers tied to California fire

Wildfire investigators in California are looking for marijuana growers tied to a Mexican drug cartel whom they suspect ignited a blaze that has charred more than 87,000 acres (35,200 hectares) of a national forest.

The La Brea Fire, which erupted Aug. 8 in the Los Padres National Forest in the remote Santa Barbara County mountains northwest of Los Angeles, is believed to be the first major wildfire in the state caused by drug traffickers, U.S. Forest Service spokesman Jim Turner said on Monday.

A joint statement issued Saturday night by the Santa Barbara County sheriff's office and the Forest Service said the blaze was sparked by a "cooking fire in a marijuana drug trafficking operation ... believed to be run by a Mexican national drug organization."

Plus, I read that four out of five C4C applications are rejected because of paperwork issues/technicalities, and the dealers got a reprieve on disabling the "clunkers" (what a misused term!) until they get their checks. In some cases the dealers were disabling cars, then the apps got rejected, leaving them out the rebate money, plus holding a now-worthless trade-in.

Umm... GM had to shutter factories because its inventory was overly bloated and they had to reduce inventories. Now, the restarted factories are in the process of producing the new model year. The reports mask what GM and the other automakers are doing, and may be attributing to CFC results that are unrelated to CFC but instead to the general business cycle of these companies.

Fact is, the automakers can only raise production since they were at a virtual standstill for a couple of months due to the bankruptcies and the need to deal with inventory when no one was buying any cars at all - particularly GM and Chrysler when they were in the throes of bankruptcy.

I've seen some reports that it might have spurred perhaps 20% additional sales - or roughly 50,000 vehicle sales.

That's out of the 300,000 or so sold. Typically there are more than 10 million cars sold in the US annually. Drop.In.Bucket.

I've noticed some websites now have a code in place so that when you cut and paste, you get a "Read more at ... " and it provides the link. I think that's a neat feature, but haven't quite figured out how to implement. I generally provide in-line linking to the stuff I quote, but it can be useful.

Any pointers?

You like that feature? I've been seeing it too, and I don't like it. Not crazy about Javascript that messes around with the clipboard.

How much processing time does it take up? I already get a lot of sluggishness when I view LGF from my iphone.

Also, if the links will only be on the thread introductory text, which is pretty static, maybe having a pre-processor, process once and use that as the introductory text would bring the javascript processing to zero.

Just suggestions from a guy that uses his iPhone a lot.

I've seen some reports that it might have spurred perhaps 20% additional sales - or roughly 50,000 vehicle sales.

That's out of the 300,000 or so sold. Typically there are more than 10 million cars sold in the US annually. Drop.In.Bucket.

And many of those people will still be left with having to pay the balance in the form of loans.

But wait, a cool new car-loan bailout..

There's also those who think she's a viable candidate not in 2012, but in 10-20 years, once she has "matured" and learned to talk smart. I think they miss the point entirely: The only reason she ever had a following is her relative youth combined with physical attractiveness. Once she reaches her 50's or 60's, the sex appeal will have waned off entirely. Unless she can teach herself to be a genius in fifteen years, it will be all she wrote.

Apart from that, I think her current ascendancy is very much a matter of the strange political climate of the moment. Sharm put it very well a while ago when she said it was as if the Republicans desperately wanted to cast a role without even having yet written a script. (or something like that). They really want their own version of Obama, in the sense of someone who is personally charismatic and can command a popular following.

Interesting that the initial selection of Palin caused a rise upward in terms of male voters who liked the ticket--but didn't affect the female numbers the same way. More evidence for your theory, IMO.

TALEBAN commanders have been bribed with cash from the international community to hold off violent attacks in the run up to Thursday's Afghan elections, The Scotsman has learned.

Intelligence sources say the money was given to fighters in the hope it would form the basis of permanent peace talks with the Taleban. The news came as the head of the British Army warned that UK troops might remain engaged in operations in Afghanistan for another five years.

General Sir Richard Dannatt, in Edinburgh yesterday for the official opening of the UK's first purpose-built recovery centre for injured service personnel, said it would take "a bit of time" before Afghan forces were able to take over responsibility for security in the country.

President Karzai is tipped to be re-elected this week after the bloodiest month for British troops in the eight-year war. His brother, Ahmed Wali Karzai, and another key Afghan government figure in reconciliation efforts, Arif Noorzai, have been in negotiations with the Taleban.

Saudi diplomat recalled after Ottawa charges

A Saudi diplomat facing charges after a collision with an Ottawa police cruiser left Canada before his court date after being recalled to Saudi Arabia.

Marwan Al Harbi, 30, who worked for Saudi Arabia's embassy in Ottawa, was recalled after the Department of Foreign Affairs asked that his diplomatic immunity be waived so the charges could be heard in court, department spokeswoman Laura Markle said in a prepared statement.

Al Harbi was charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm; flight while pursued, causing bodily harm; and assault with a weapon causing bodily harm. He had been scheduled to appear in court Monday.

"Once informed of the recall," Markle said, "the department removed the individual from the official list of diplomats and informed the police and court authorities that he no longer enjoys diplomatic status in Canada."

Markle added that diplomats are expected to follow Canadian laws and it views the accusations in this case as "very serious."

"While respecting Canada's international obligations with regards to diplomatic relations," the statement said, "the department encourages police to lay charges where appropriate and to take necessary actions to ensure public safety."

Ottawa police said Monday they had issued a warrant for Al Harbi's arrest.

Al Harbi was charged after an SUV driver led police on a chase down Bank Street around 12:45 a.m. on June 2. Police had received a call about a vehicle being driven erratically.

The SUV collided head-on with a police cruiser at Heron Road. A police officer received minor injuries.

Also, it does take a certain level of skill to run a good radio show--I don't think she has it. Most people don't. Even people like Levin and Hannity do have that ability.

FWIW, that was what I'd read about why there isn't radio interest in her: the consensus was that she wouldn't be able to do it. A one hour TV show, on the other hand...

re: #462 Kenneth

Did you hear about that other case -- a physician, Abdelhamid (originally from Libya) in Manitoba allegedly raped (iirc repeatedly?) a boy patient (while the patient was sedated)...then, the judge allowed the physician out on bail despite warnings from the crown prosecutor (the news reports allege that the physician "had connections"). So, he was out on 5,000 dollars bail, and his passport was revoked...But, guess what? He had a diplomatic passport and has now fled the country. There's a Canada wide warrant out for his arrest...(I seriously doubt if this individual will ever face justice.) report here.

I continue to wonder how pop-up ads can possibly "work", from a basic Pavlovian psychological perspective.

I, the consumer, see an ad for your product, and instantly associate it with a feeling of annoyance, even anger. This is repeated, over and over. How can that possibly help your sales?

If you're running noscript, you don't see the links unless you allow infolinks.com .

I don't see 'em either, so I'm assuming AdBlocker is effective against them as well.

May I make a tiny, whimpering plea not to discuss Sarah Palin? Just...please, not today. It's so peaceful in here, this afternoon. I can't bear the spitting cat-fights that erupt over her.

And ruin your Denzel-like visage? Perish the thought!

LOL
I'll never live that post down when I wrote that I thought Denzil was the most handsome male actor in America...
Just thank God I'd didn't say Tom Cruise or something...
*wink*
/We should have just kept talking about actresses that day...I'll never live this down

I wish I could ding you more than once. Problem is- we don't even really have a populist message at this point either. We just have "No!" and fear mongering. Charismatic populism might be a refreshing change for awhile.

I think the media have overblown the "Republicans just say 'No'" meme. And the fear mongering. But to be sure, they have done so with plenty of help from the Republicans themselves. Populism rarely has a message rather than an emotional attitude.

Modern toilets use 1.6g/flush (by law), the older ones used as much as 5 gallons.

Of course, the modern ones frequently need to be flushed twice.

If you want a decent LC toilet, you have to spend some money. These $50 toilets the builders install, are, pardon the pun, not worth a shit.

Unfortunately, it seems the party has lost all ability to reason and is flying on emotional auto-pilot, which means the populism is here to stay for now. When someone in leadership can get a grip on rationality once again, we might see an actual proposal or agenda that will excite the electorate to the point we could win an election.

Get ready, 'the push' cometh:

From: David Plouffe, BarackObama.com
Subject: Thursday: Strategy meeting with the President

President Obama is holding a live strategy meeting on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time for all Organizing for America supporters. I hope you can join us, online or by phone.

The President will update us on the fight to pass real health insurance reform -- what's happening in D.C. and what's happening around the country. He'll lay out our strategy and message going forward and answer questions from supporters like you. And we'll unveil the next actions we'll organize together.

This is a critical time in this President's administration, and in the history of our country. I hope you can join us.

Here are the details:

What: Organizing for America National Health Care Forum

When: Thursday, August 20th, 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time

RSVP and submit a question for the President.

The President wrote to us a few weeks ago to ask us to go the extra mile this month in the fight for health insurance reform. And so far, you've stepped up in a big way: Last week, an astounding 60,000 Organizing for America volunteers stopped by representatives' and senators' local offices. You told your health care stories to staffers and members of Congress -- of losing insurance after getting laid off, of being denied coverage upon finding out about a serious illness. And you thanked those supporting real health insurance reform for all the work they've done so far.

But these local office visits were only part of the story. The D.C. media has been trumpeting coverage of town halls disrupted by angry opposition to reform. But the reality on the ground is very different. Organizing for America supporters are showing up in huge numbers at these meetings all across the country -- outnumbering opponents of reform, often by overwhelming margins.

You've organized 11,906 local events in all 50 states -- from press conferences to community discussions -- since we launched our big campaign for reform in June. And you've made hundreds of thousands of calls to Congress.

Your work so far has been incredible. But the special interests and partisan attack groups who oppose reform will not let up, and they will tell whatever lies they can to spread fear. There's a lot more work for all of us to do. This Thursday's meeting is our chance to huddle as a team, get the latest information and talk about how we're going to achieve this victory. You don't want to miss it.

Are you ready? :)

Charles, maybe you could do like a premier membership or something.
I wold pony up $5 or $10 a month just for the news filtering and free analysis that I get here. Plus, the lizard army is consistently a couple of days (at least) ahead of the FMSM. think about it.

Come on lizards, just sit and think about how things would be if LFG had to fold...not a pleasant thought.

The ad links are a distracting nuisance.

503 pleaseandthankyou  Wed, Aug 19, 2009 11:55:56am

Charles does a hell of a lot of work for this site and most of us get the benefit for free, so of course he is justified in finding ways to pay for it and to give himself a good living. However, I'd rather see an a regular ad than these insidious info links . A regular ad, generally speaking isn't trying to hide itself or pretend to be anything that it is not. These info links are embedded in the text, pretending to be of some sort of innocuous beneficial link, but the reader is constantly being reminded that someone or something is trying to sell them something, even if they don't mouse over. Accidentally mousing over is incredibly annoying and usually causes me to stop reading and close the window. Info links is like taking something annoying, like a fly, and moving it from a certain distance and dropping it directly in your soup.
