Hate Radio Host Claims He Was Paid by the FBI

US News • Views: 2,369

White supremacist radio host/blogger Hal Turner, recently arrested for urging readers of his blog to kill Chicago judges, says (through his lawyer) that he was a paid informant for the FBI.

Hal Turner, the blogger and radio personality, remains jailed pending charges over his recent online rants, which prosecutors claim amounted to an invitation for someone to kill Connecticut lawmakers and Chicago federal appeals court judges.

But behind the scenes the reformed white supremacist was holding clandestine meetings with FBI agents who taught him how to spew hate “without crossing the line,” according to his lawyer, Michael Orozco.

“Almost everything was at the behest of the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” Orozco said in a 45-minute telephone interview from New Jersey. “Their job was to pick up information on the responses of what he was saying and see where that led them. It was an interesting dynamic on what he was being asked to do.”

“He’s a devoted American,” added the lawyer, who claims Turner was paid “tens of thousands of dollars” for his service.

Bill Carter, an FBI spokesman, said in a telephone interview the bureau’s policy is “to neither confirm nor deny whether an individual has an association with the FBI.”

Wikipedia has more on Turner’s rancid career.

OK, where is the money, how did it get to him, when did he get is and who gave it to him?

That should clear things right up. Otherwise, he's full of shit.

A notorious New Jersey hate blogger charged in June with threatening to kill judges and lawmakers was secretly an FBI “agent provocateur” paid to disseminate right-wing rhetoric, his attorney said Wednesday.

Well if an attorney said it, it must be true./

I have a very deep and sincere skeptism that Mr. Turner and his attorney are telling the truth or anything resembling the truth regarding that. He got caught, and doesn't like the prospect of going to jail.

There's more evidence than just Turner's word:

On Jan. 1, unidentified hackers electronically confronted Turner in the forum of his website for “The Hal Turner Show.” After a heated exchange, they told Turner that they had successfully hacked into his E-mails and found correspondence with an FBI agent who is apparently Turner’s handler. Then they posted an alleged July 7 E-mail to the agent in which Turner hands over a message from someone who sent in a death threat against Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wisc.). “Once again,” Turner writes to his handler, “my fierce rhetoric has served to flush out a possible crazy.” In what is allegedly a portion of another E-mail, Turner discusses the money he is paid.

I'm out a bit, but if we turn up some good evidence of this, I'm with Charles on this, it's totally insane that the FBI is paying to whip up frenzy if this is true when we all know there are enough crazies out there that you don't really need to create any; and you sure as hell don't have to look hard to find them since they all crave attention.

The FBI used to be a major component of several "militias" as well.

53 shiplord kirel  Fri, Aug 21, 2009 2:07:31pm

Historical context:

A lot of the controversy that continues to swirl around the 1979 Greensboro Massacre centers on the alleged role of FBI and police informants in instigating the confrontation that led to the fatal shooting of five communist activists. There is no doubt at all that at least two informants were among the Klansmen and neo-Nazis that day and one is plausibly accused of having a major role in planning the confrontation. The Communist Workers Party naturally claims the informants were agents provocateur and the whole thing was a conspiracy by authorities to get rid of local agitators. They would claim that regardless of the facts, obviously, but there are some serious questions about police conduct before, during, and after the shootings.

In which case, Turner himself could wind up missing, or in an accident, or found to have committed suicide. Very interesting story. Also, if true, we probably won't hear much more about it.

“He’s a devoted American,” added the lawyer, who claims Turner was paid “tens of thousands of dollars” for his service.

A devoted American would do it for free.

Paid informants are intrinsically less reliable than volunteers / cooperating witnesses. A paid informant is - intrinsically - someone who is willing to sell others out. So you never know if they are telling you the truth, which is why you maintain a secondary source to help verify what they tell you.

You pay an informant when they have access that you cannot get. What access did a loud mouth hater with a microphone provide? And how does coaching someone's hate speech turn up evidence for prosecutions (which is the business that the FBI is in - evidence for presecutions).

It doesn't hang together. And the FBI will never confirm / deny a relationship no matter how absurd in order to protect the relationships it has.

I ask because many of these $600 hammer, etc. stories are crocks of shit.

The space shuttle toilet, FWIW, is a little more complex than the one in your powder room and has to be spaceflight-qualified. Probably cost a good deal more than $1,000 ... aircraft (and spacecraft!) parts tend to be expensive because they have to be good.

Iirc, the proverbial thousand dollar toilet seat was the complete cover, seat, and mounting hardware for the lavatory in a KC-135, and the price was actually lower than what airlines were paying for the same equipment.

Okay, I admit this may be a weak argument.

One can argue that in the decade between the development of the DSRV and the VOL, technology advanced enough to allow for a much cheaper design and deployment. The DSRV was a first of its kind, right? And would have had substancial R&D expenses. The VOL, coming later, would have (presumably) built on what the DSRV people learned.

There *are* sometimes reasons for $600 toilets.

William Harris

The $600 toilet seat had to fit a particular place. At the time the planes were made USAF was advised to buy some spares, which would have cost $10 each before the production line was taken down. They didn't and later needed twenty, I think it was. The tooling cost to set up to make the first one was $12,000. The seats were free.

An idiot made a claim he could make the P-3 Orion john cheaper than Lockheed. It was fiberglas but also connected to the airframe so it was structural hardware. The DoD gave him an estimate for qualifying his $600 parts. Somehow, he shut up.

Okay, I admit this may be a weak argument.

The hammer is remarkably similar ... it was part of a tail assembly for the C-130, and since the tail assembly tooling needed for the run had to be drug out of deep storage, installed, checked, certified, and tested, it got pretty expensive. The profit from the job (5%, IIRC) was (by Fed rules) spread EVENLY over each part number, resulting in said hammer price.

Not trying to be pedantic, but here. It's as entertaining as it is useful.

I almost hurt myself twisting your arm. ;)

The daughter is spending the night at a friend's house; the visiting teenage nephews are out for dinner and a double feature movie night. The car was not out of the driveway before I grabbed this beer.

Colts D played like monsters last night...We just blew Philly up...
Also Manning is looking frigging great...

Manning is all they ever said about him and more...and it seems like over the years the Colts always have an undersized D, but very fast...actually perfect for a quick strike offense...btw the CBoys have beat Manning the Colts a few times...socked him good two years ago

There are certain things that make a community feel like a family. Some folks things it's about laughing together, sharing each other little victories and tragedies. That's crap. It's all about the acronyms.

We have a new defense this year...Big on the line to stop the run and lots of speed in the backfield...Less cover 2 crap and more aggresive...cover one and blitz packages..
Manning has always been able to score points..We just couldn't stop teams..
Big bad ass Philly had a rude awakening last night..We kicked their first team line to the curb and then pummeled the second team..
Indy is excited! With Bob Sanders coming back..A big mean fast defense.
Watch out for Indy...

224 Dr. Shalit  Fri, Aug 21, 2009 6:59:06pm

OK Turner -

Who was your contact? Rabbi Rabinowitz? - Franklin D. Roosevelt Jones? - Jose Jimenez?
Give me a break, JAKE.

-S-

225 lawhawk  Fri, Aug 21, 2009 7:51:37pm

Turner was also charged in CT for similar charges - threatening CT politicians.

And those Chicago judges weren't state judges; they were judges sitting on the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals - Posner, Eastbrook, and Bauer.

His lunacy goes back even before that - threatening that any politician who signed onto the amnesty bill in any form would be a legitimate target for assassination.

226 Dadaist  Fri, Aug 21, 2009 8:23:48pm

The FBI does watch far-right, far-left, islamic fundamentalist and eco-extremist groups. It's an important part of their job and that includes running informants or agents in such groups. If, however, they have been paying someone to spread lunatic ideas over the radio that's crossing a line in my view.

I sincerely hope that this is just more crazy bullshit from a knuckle-dragging maniac. If not, it's a particularly obnoxious way to waste tax payers money.
