Saturday Night Music: Miles Davis at the Isle of Wight, Intro by Keith Jarrett

Music • Views: 2,438

Keith Jarrett has a talent so enormous it’s like a ferocious monkey on his back, and you get a glimpse of the monkey’s wrath in this video clip, as Jarrett introduces a recording of Miles Davis’ appearance at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival. It’s no exaggeration to say that at this point in time, Miles was shattering musical boundaries and redefining jazz and blowing minds … again, for the third or fourth time in his career … and Jarrett, the acoustic purist, absolutely hated the volume and the electronic chaos — but at the same time, realized he was part of musical history. A great clip. (The rest of the concert is linked in the playlist below.)

Too bad Miles didn't want acoustic piano. I think it would have been cool.

The Golden Age of Jazz. Sadly, you know that when Congress is enacting laws to preserve jazz, it's going downhill.

I was surprised at the Brubeck concert. The average audience age was around 20.

I have zero knowledge regarding this, but it seems reasonable for the feds to help support preservation of something so distinctly American...as opposed to supporting or creating art...if not directly, then through grants

Another nice summation of the tax paradox:

With a tan baseball cap hanging off one knee, Mr. Perry is proud to report that "Texas created more jobs in 2008 than the rest of the states—combined." As of July, the state, which taxes neither capital gains nor income, had an unemployment rate of 7.5%, two points below the national average, while California's hovered at 11.5%, two points above.

No wonder over half a million people flooded into Texas between 2000 and 2007. Meanwhile, 1.2 million residents left California in the same seven-year period.

The bottom line? Tax-and-spend governance is as bankrupt as California's bank account. By way of illustration, the governor replays a conversation he had with Rudy Giuliani during the presidential primaries.

They were talking about Michigan. "The Michigan governor was making statements about having to raise taxes so [they could keep] services at the level they were, instead of, like we did in Texas, cutting, not raising, taxes and cutting spending. There was a great difference in political philosophy. In Michigan, a liberal democrat raised taxes and kept their government programs at the same level. And guess what? Their economy continued into the toilet, it continued down.

"Our economy on the other hand [improved]—let me give you a great example: We had a $10 billion budget deficit when we got here in January of 2003. We cut that budget deficit; we did not raise taxes; we came back in '05, and we had an $8 billion surplus. That's how fast it can happen.

[Link: online.wsj.com...]

Another no individual income tax state; another success story. As low margin business owners located in states like Texas and Washington will testify, business gross receipts taxes are hell on low margin businesses (such as grocery stores). But residents will gladly pay higher prices because the state government isn't stealing their money. At the end of the day, they still have more money left.

Here's a tip for the future. When you see a nic that you've never seen before, and the avatar is still a football, click on the football and view the stats. If the Karma is low, beware. Especially of the comment made was snarky and/or anti-Charles.

Also, if the poster registered in 2004 and made only a handful of comments, that is another sign you are dealing with a troll.

Don't they use the Medical Review Board System? All lawsuits get reviewed by an independent medical board. Only if they say they suit is legit can it go forward.

If you aren't going to use a Medical Review Board, at the very least change the laws so that the lawsuit loser pays ALL fees/costs. That will cut frivolous lawsuits all by itself.

IIRC (having closed my biz a few years ago now), there's a flat fee of a couple hundred bucks by category, then a percentage of gross receipts from activity inside the city limits, and that's that. May have varied by category, may have changed by now.

Hell, you should have watch the details of this last budget. First the incumbent Gov. ran on a "surplus" while the papers and opponent were warning of a deficit. Once she won, SURPRISE we have the GWB deficit to deal with. The "official" deficit went from $700 million to $8 Billion in a few months.

Despite that the legislature "balance" the budget. Taking the promised stimulus money into account and other one time account tricks to balance it, thereby kicking the $8 Billion bomb down the road two years.

$8 Billion in WA per capita wise is the a hole the same size as CA, our government just managed to cover it up for a extra two years.

WA in late '10 into '11 is going be in same spot as CA.

Maybe the Big One that makes most of the West Coast fall off into the ocean is just what we need!

Yes, the Business and Occupation tax is unfortunate. But it's a gross receipts (i.e. it hits low margin businesses the hardest), and consumers are left with more money to spend.

It still comes out, business adjust pricing to compensate. Folks on the borders with ID and OR jump the border to shop. They've even suggested the State Patrol look for those folks. Internet sales piss 'em off too.

Thomas Sowell did an interesting talk (NRO, Uncommon Knowledge series) about land use laws, California, vs. Texas, especially Houston (which has no zoning) and their effect on the housing bust. Fewer restrictions smooth out the boom and bust cycles.

I love Sowell's work. I highly recommend his book Applied Economics (which discusses the topic you mention). There's no other Ivy League economist I know of who can boil down compex economic issues into plain english like Sowell.

Los Angeles city business tax works roughly the same way. Was very annoying, until they decided to exempt businesses less than $100k, which generally included moi. However, in principle, I sort of approve.

Problem is, LA residents pay state individual income tax at a top marginal rate of over 9%.

Problem is, LA residents pay state individual income tax at a top marginal rate of over 9%.

Nearby City Council had open hearings on a new 2% tax on prepared food, with proceeds going to "tourism". 75 people at the meeting. (usually 3-5) all but one said "No! This tax will hurt business!" One guy from a local museum was in favor of it. Council voted it in 7-0.

Next week, article in paper about City Council Chairman had won some type of award.

Third week, a letter to the editor asked "Was Mr. Jones award in recognition of his ability to do exactly what his constituents *didn't* want? If so, it was richly deserved!"

LaRouche Democrats say Obama-Hitler should be Hanged for Crimes

When I asked the man on the right what his sign meant, he told me “That guy asked me for $1,000 for LaRouche about an hour ago. He told me stuff about colonizing Mars and hanging Obama as a criminal. I told him I didn’t have money, so he started hitting up another guy for money.”

At this point, LaRouche guy interjected that none of that was true, and called the man on the right a liar repeatedly. It all sounded too bizarre. I could not tell who was telling the truth. The LaRouche worker stalked off and I asked the man if he was really told those things about Mars and hanging Obama. “Yes, and he gave me a magazine, and I read it, and it says the same things in that. I went to Walgreen’s and bought this poster board and a pen and here I am.” I asked him to show me the magazine. He went to his car, retrieved the magazine, and showed me below: “President Obama should be hung.” That’s his thumb, by the way, holding the LaRouche magazine, dated August 1, 2009.

And California businesses (regular corps) pay additional taxes, with conventional deductions for expenses and a minimum franchise tax of $800 last I looked.

And must collect sales taxes which are now exceeding 10% in some municipal areas, which the business must track individually. Fun for all, not.

Depends on how your business is organized. If you're taxed under Subchapter C of the Internal Revenue Code, you pay a higher rate. If you're a Subchapter S corporation, you pay a low rate, but all the income of the corporation "flows through" to the shareholders (who pay California's usurious individual income tax rate). If you're an LLC, it's unclear. The state supreme court has declared the ridiculous LLC fee unconstitutional - twice - but the Franchise Tax Board continues to assess it. The $800 you refer to is the minimum tax that's assessed to all businesses for the privilege of operating in California.

After Charles commented on the Roomba, I recalled it was listed in the casino gift book, so I ordered one. I assumed was pretty much a toy, but it works great. It runs around the house, and heads back to it's charging station when it needs to recharge. You can set a timer to have it clean up at a certain time of day. The only downside is it needs to be emptied and brushes cleaned every 20 minutes or so the first few times it makes a run since we have 10 years worth of cat hair under some furniture and beds that it feels like it needs to find as it scoots under anything 3 inches off the floor. Pretty cool little gadget.

Brings to mind Cao, a true conservative, who took the whole shebang in William "Freezer" Jefferson's long-held district in New Orleans. Came out of nowhere, campaigned hard ...and won! Truly amazing.

I heard her for the first time this week on a radio interview. No political history, but smart as hell and well spoken. I have no clue what her positions are on Darwin, etc but her first impression was very good. Perry has got to go but not at the expense of a Democrat in the position. Kay simply needs to retire (she knows it), and the governorship is not the place to do it in this tax payers opinion.

What can one expect to pay for a Roomba? Sounds like something I would like to buy.

I just checked, most are in the $250 and up range, some much more. I got the 565 and I think they are under $300. The nice thing is I can have it vacuum every day by just detting the timer. It's also great entertainment if you have cats.

This may have a beneficial effect on easing the hiring and firing of teachers, but not such a good effect on the curriculum if the Discovery Institute folks begin supplying teaching materials for science classes.

From RP forums, quoted from the "Meet-up" email:

"While the Republican Party has tried to marginalize Ron Paul for years, Debra has been a strong supporter of Dr. Paul. She is currently the State Coordinator for the Campaign for Liberty. Debra has helped form a group called Operation Come and Take It, to build not only support for the idea of liberty, but to educate supporters on the Fundamentals of Liberty needed in order to effectively share this message with others. Debra has established her own educational organization called, Ambassadors Institute, which also offers instruction in the Constitution and the Fundamentals of Liberty. Debra brings not only her political skills with her, but also business and management skills. Debra is a nurse by training and has run her own business for 7 years. She and her husband Noe Medina have a grown daughter Janise and a son Jacob, who is a sophomore at Blinn/Texas A&M. Debra is a native of Texas and a 20 resident of Wharton, TX. Debra is very proud of her heritage as a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She is also eligible for membership in the Daughters of the Texas Revolution. Now, she is willing to be part of the current Revolution, to return government to the people of Texas!

When we asked her if she would consider running as the "people's candidate" for Governor, she was shocked and a bit overcome. She stammered, "I have never thought about anything like this." We assured her that was part of her appeal. We are all tired of people who have spent their life time positioning themselves and cutting deals, so one day they would be "anointed" to office. We are asking her to serve the people. Understandably she said she would need to give it some serious thought and discuss it with her family. She immediately acknowledged that her plate is very full. Her daughter getting married in April, as well as her commitments for the Campaign for Liberty and to the Republican Party. However she did not give us a definite "no." Indeed, she said she had spent her life trying to walk through the doors that were opened "where she could be of service to other."

While Debra has been considering what taking on such a challenge would mean to her and to her family, now she also needs to know that this is not just the request of a few individuals. She needs to know there is broad based support for a "peoples candidate" and for her personally as that candidate. So friends, THIS IS IT. THIS IS WHERE WE CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN."

We drove to Tuscaloosa and he introduced me to Paul Bryant.

Howdy!

File this one under "what media bias?":

An AP "news" story helpfully informs us...

Obama wants honest health care debate

Not that he says he does, or claims he does... he just does. It's a fact!

From your link:

President Barack Obama is challenging critics of his push to overhaul the health care system to stop making "phony claims" about proposals now the subject of intense coast-to-coast debate.

He has a point. Now, will he "challenge" himself to do likewise?

Nope, not an architect. Thought I wanted to be one once upon a time.
The bells they make are the BEST! They are situated on a canyon, in the middle of Arizona, and it is HOT. THe hillsides are planted with olive trees for shade, and hung with Soleri bells. So, the first breeze of the evening is heralded with the music of the bells. A promise of cooling.

Not the first time Japan has had problems with brittle steel. The Japanese super-battleships Yamato and Musashi had serious problems with the heat-treatment of their massive armor plates. As a result their protection was at least 10% less than it should have been.

Any fans of semi-fictinal historical movies out there mght want to see this:
1612: Chronicles of the Dark Times. Someone posted 14 segments, the entire movie, on YouTube. A smerd falls in love with the to-be-empress Ksenia Godunov, winds up pulling a riverboat with other slaves, is bought by a Spanish mercenary who teaches him the sword and the use of artillery, takes on the identity of the fallen Spaniard and with his Tatar sidekick, builds a cannon and helps defend a town from the invading Poles, led by a would-be usurper.
Some funny moments, some incredibly bloody battle scenes, lots of winged Polish cavalry, some brief nudity, a Gandalf-like wise man of the woods, and strangely, too many scenes of a unicorn wandering in the woods.

I'm doing just great thanks. Friend sent me to that site for some stuff on Stephen Stills and I saw him accompanying Judy Collins on Graham Nash's TV show (musta been one of the BBC's better series!) and that lead me to another Judy Collins vid and they were both songs I'd recorded with two friends of mine back in the day - as a demo so I'm just floating on air remembering those times!

I updinged that even though I know next to nothing about Rodan, other than the film star Rodan, nemesis and sometimes sidekick of Godzilla.

I followed the link that DF left yesterday and saw that it was an exchange with lots of "ANSWER MY QUESTION!" type demands from this Rodan person. So I knew enough to know that he is best avoided, and I would guess he probably does crave attention as MrPaulRevere said.

Here is something interesting. There were some today that commented on the anti-statehood demonstration by about 300 people in Hawaii. Yesterday was our statehood day. The demonstration and photos were centered around a woman who ceremoniously cut out the top star in the US flag and burned it. Frankly she did not look Hawaiian to me, in spite of the headlines. Likely she would to all of you or a national AP reporter, though. Anyway, I attempted to trace her ancestry. She is by all indicators, Greek-Korean. Just another left-wing poser.

They are indeed arquebuses. Japanese weapons of that type did not always have a shoulder stock, as they were often fired from a squatting position resembling the "rice-paddy" prone position (which I will ask Realwest to describe). The smaller size also might have made them able to be fired from the saddle in time of great need.

I've been a casino gambler for about 20 years and I recall playing $2.00 a hand blackjack, and shaking when I would go to $5.00. Back than, I was lucky to get a free meal, Now, the minimum bet is $25, and if I'm winning, I may risk more than I want to think about, but it's something you have to do when the shoe goes your way. I still can't stand to watch the big guys drop what would be a years salary for a average guy in 10 minutes and not bat a eye.

My parent got that gambling bug bad...they lose alot sometimes...win alot sometimes. If I lose $10, I start crying. I am too cheap to be a gambler.

those first two might get irritated, but living where she does, Sarah Palin probably knows about farmer's markets and shops at them. There are many such farmer's markets in and around Chicago, and that is probably where the Obamas got the idea from. I have no problem with it, in fact I find it rather wholesome. But then again, I don't have ODS.

They are indeed arquebuses. Japanese weapons of that type did not always have a shoulder stock, as they were often fired from a squatting position resembling the "rice-paddy" prone position (which I will ask Realwest to describe). The smaller size also might have made them able to be fired from the saddle in time of great need.

where did the name "arquebuses" come from? They don't look very efficient. (then again, I am pretty ignorant on the subject)

I had a terrible tumble down three steps last night. Landed on my side. It was strange- like an ungraceful ballet styled fall, and my purse caught some of the weight as I sprawled onto the sidewalk. I sat up laughing, because I'm the biggest klutz in the world and it was so me. And then I realized I must not be too hurt if I was laughing, but I checked myself for injuries at that point. I have a nasty bruise below my knee, and that's about all I have to show for this spectacular crash no one witnessed. I thanked my lucky stars and Special Higher Angel for their protection that I didn't break my neck or any other bone. Nor did I lose an ounce of precious bodily fluids.

Thanks, {Mom}.

Arquebus is a Spanish term. originally. Few early firearms were efficient. Their main advantage was that they took far less skill to use than a longbow. Guns did not truly come into their own until the later flintlocks and socket bayonets removed the need for halbearders and pikemen.

There's no correlation between the two initiatives. The farmer's market is probably just an ideam the Obamas have found works well that they'd like to import to DC. On a political level, it lets them go out and be seen among the people, which can be a positive if done right (and it would be).

Speaking of old weapons, flintlocks have left us with two expressions that we understand even though we don't know their source:
Don't go off half-cocked
Flash in the pan

Flintlocks have a half-cocked position, largely used when loading. They cannot be fired from that position.
They also have a "pan" in which powder caught the spark from the flint, and then set off the propellant charge. A flash might not set off the charge.

Same here! My mother gave me a pile of stuff to sell in a garage sale several years ago and a toilet seat was part of it. It was back in the original box, no longer new, but thankfully was clean. I marked it Free and sort of hid it, but a guy found it and actually pressed money on me for it.

It lure to stay is strong and that's what the casino wants to happen. I wish my parent would walk away sometimes...they come home in barrels

Although I'm a gambler, I have mixed feeling about it. I view it as entertainment, and a set credit line at the casino that limits my downside loss potential. I leave my credit cards in the car, and just take a little petty cash. I see folks up there that are compulsive gamblers, that ruin their lives trying to hit the big score.

State agency executive branch, Gov. appoints the head of the agency.

I wrote Gregoire about some of the issues, she did her usual pass the buck and blamed the legislature.

Well that just SUCKS. If it's an executive branch than all she could do would be to blame the legistlature for not enough money, INSTEAD of thinking of better ways to use the money they do have.
Keep on writing her jcm - y'all can never tell - if you can give her some beneficial changes which WON'T REQUIRE LEGISLATIVE ACTION and then conclude each letter with a "then you would get ALL the credit for fixing something that's seriously broken and help the children. Ya know, the kind of language politicians understand: "What's in it for me?"

I know I'm really showing my ignorance here--or a lack of retaining facts--as I know I've learned most of this at some time. Just not enough of a gun nut --probably because I don't shoot. Actually, I developed hand problems, so any idea of going to the range hasn't worked out well.

Anyway, the only way to learn is to ask questions . . .

What I think I understand is: that fire powered projectile weapons began with actually using fire. Then, at some point, someone figured out a way to ignite a charge by friction. At that point, firearms became more efficient to use. Add to that the ability to mass produce uniform relatively light weight projectiles and devise an way to load them efficiently and then "rifle" the barrel to improve accuracy and firearms became the weapon of choice for just about every situation in which a weapon was needed.

so, that's what I think I know about firearm technical history.

How'd I do?

God was missing for six days. Eventually, Michael, the archangel, found him, resting on the seventh day.
He inquired, "Where have you been?"
God smiled deeply and proudly pointed downwards through the clouds, "Look, Michael. Look what I've made."
Archangel Michael looked puzzled, and said, "What is it?"
"It's a planet," replied God, "and I've put life on it.. I'm going to call it Earth and it's going to be a place to test Balance."
"Balance?" inquired Michael, "I'm still confused."
God explained, pointing to different parts of earth. "For example, northern Europe will be a place of great opportunity and wealth, while southern Europe is going to be poor. Over here I've placed a continent of white people, and over there is a continent of black people. Balance in all things."
God continued pointing to different countries. "This one will be extremely hot, while this one will be very cold and covered in ice."
The Archangel, impressed by God's work, then pointed to a land area and said, "What's that one?"
"That's Washington State, the most glorious place on earth. There are beautiful mountains, rivers and streams, lakes, forests, hills, and plains. The people from Washington State are going to be handsome, modest, intelligent, and humorous, and they are going to travel the world. They will be extremely sociable, hardworking, high achieving, carriers of peace, and producers of software."
Michael gasped in wonder and admiration, but then asked, "But what about balance, God? You said there would be balance."
God smiled, "There's another Washington.

Close to correct. The flintlock did make firearms lighter and more efficient. Rifling had been invented long before it was widely used. Until the 19th Century invention of the Mine' Ball Ball, rifling always was soon too badly fouled to do any good. The "minny ball" as it came to bell called during the US Civil War, expanded its hollow base to fit the rifling and thus partially clean the barrel. Concurrent with the development, the percussion cap replaced the flint as the best firing mechanism. It was more waterproof, and more reliable.

As long as I have the basics right, there is hope I can retain the specifics. I've taken the NRA safety course, and plan on doing it again in the Spring. Perhaps with enough repetition. . . .. It's just so pissy when I can't actually shoot. Last time my hands hurt for three days just from handling the different firearms. The weight of the semi-auto rifle nearly dislocated my elbow (I have really bad joints). I couldn't imagine being a soldier and carrying their rifle and gear.

Actually, I was thinking cannons, which I guess aren't technically firearms (--I dunno maybe they are). I was thinking projectile weapons that used gunpowder or something to propel them other than muscle power --as opossed to bow and arrow. I guess cross-bows would wouldn't use muscle power, but they were outlawed at some point. But that is another issue entirely.

Or you could always just reboot, if you can't close the install window.

And afterwards, run another scan just in case.

No Dog, I clicked to run, got the not verifiable signature (from Microsoft!!) so I cancelled it. Right now my Task Manager is houwing 3 tasks running, LGF, Norton and Web Mail.

Close web mail, whether manually or via task manager. Just in case.
It does sound like it got cancelled, though.

(Need to get to bed soon)

You should be alright. Close down all open programs, reboot and then scan again. That should get rid of the crap.

My son was on Facebook and this thing popped up and he installed it. What a nightmare. It took me going into the registry and deleting it line by line. Ugh! I wish the people that write these programs would try something constructive for a change.

There were multiple projectile devices. The Romans were incredibly creative. The Greeks had weapons that would shock most people today. The Chinese invented gunpowder, but it was a fear weapon. A novelty, often over accenting the sulfur to create effect. Traders brought the formula into Europe in the 1200's. The Europeans invented first, bombs, then guns. By the 1600's Europe had also contrived the steam cannon and the air gun. While deadly, both suffered from lack of proper gaskets and seals. There could be no retention of readiness. As an aside, gun wars could not be fought in the rain, until way later. Pikes and guns were used in tandem until almost 1700. So the primitive explosive shell predominated. There was a bit of discussion about arabesques etc. Interestingly enough, firearms actually were more complex before they became simpler. And curiously enough, both the steam launch and the compressed air launch have come back into the arsenal.

Hey Y'all - I need some tech help quickly! When I left LGF and tried to open some mail I got like `15 messages that I had all sorts of trojans and viruses and all.
The alert came from something called "Windows Virus Doctor -online" when I started to go for it, my protection said that the publisher (Windows) didn't have a correct signature - should I just kill this thing- have any of y'all ever HEARD of Windows Virus Doctor?
I'm currently running a Norton Inernet Security Full Systeme Scan.
HELP!

DId you clear your cache and temporary internet files? You can do that from the Control Panel, in the System area.

Then, close everything and reboot. If that thing is still there, you will have to remove it via another method.

Take note of the time and day. If you have further problems, you can do a search for programs that have been added or changed on this date at that time. You can go from there.

Have you rebooted yet RW? Clear your temporary folders and reboot. See if it's gone. Hopefully, it is. You an scan it with Norton when you are back up again.

It'll just start up again on reboot. You have to clean it all out.

It includes doing this:

[Link: www.symantec.com...]

The Symantec tech details shows that it creates this:

Installation
When the program is executed, it creates the following files:

Next, the program creates the following registry entry so that it executes whenever Windows starts:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun"Virus Doctor" = "C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication Data[RANDOM CHARACTERS]VDo[RANDOM CHARACTERS].exe" /s /d""

It also creates the following registry subkey:

Sometimes you do. If it gets in your System Restore it'll pop up again and again regardless. So that has to be cleared out and then you run a virus scan and delete what needs to be deleted.

As a collector of absurd race stories (that show how absurd race is) I would have love to been a fly on the wall at that one.

632 jiminycricket  Mon, Aug 24, 2009 5:04:22pm

I was present throughout this 5 day festival in 1970 and without doubt Miles was the most impressive set. I was completely blown away by it and had no idea what hit me and what it was all about . The shock of the new. The thrill of the new. It came and went in 38 minutes and you knew something special had just happened, something new and different and utterly original but didn't actually realise while it was happening. I was just a rock and blues fan like most people there but after that everything expanded. . Afterwards I checked out his amazing world of electric music and everything he did between 1969 and 1975 still stands as timeless and the most powerful music I know. On the Corner is great but the peak of that period for me is the Pangaea album of a concert in Japan in 1975. It's raw, primal and very beautiful.
