Nirthers Never Go Away, They Just Get Crazier

Weird • Views: 3,738

In a video we posted last month, Rep. Trent Franks (R-Arizona) was the only Republican politician who went on record with an unequivocal denunciation of the mindless “Birther” movement.

Well, looks like Franks may now be joining the kookspiracy.

The other main issue dealt with numerous speakers questioning Obama’s birth certificate and why there wasn’t an investigation into whether he is a naturalized citizen. One woman said a newspaper announcement of his birth in Hawaii was not sufficient. Another asked how he could have a passport without a birth certificate.

Franks said there was not enough evidence that Obama is not an American citizen. He did say there was a lot of conflicting evidence of Obama’s citizenship and that he was considering filing a lawsuit, the only congressman to do so. Franks asked why the president did not simply produce a birth certificate.

The GOP is being held hostage by its own lunatic base. David Weigel links to another article with a comment from someone who was at the meeting, claiming that Franks was hounded by no fewer than nine Birther fanatics.

My suggestion for how to conduct a GOP town hall: Announce at the beginning that you will not entertain any questions whatsoever regarding the birth certificate. When a nirther crackpot inevitably gets the microphone, have the individual promptly removed from the event. Repeat as necessary.

Well I don’t know Charles - Killgore first reported this in the DT today, citing the Hufffpoo for his evidence; my response is that we used to not consider the Huffpoo as a “reliable” news link and frankly I’m not so sure about

A big, boisterous crowd largely supported an Arizona Congressman, who lambasted the Democratic president and his policies

and then we have

It is best visited at 75 mph (or faster) on I-40, at night. But, if you are heading to California or Las Vegas, gas up there, it’s cheaper than California or Nevada. There is a really nice Rest Area outside of the town, so you do not even need to stop in Kingman for a potty break if you don’t have too.

It’s really hard to get a FB group off the ground unless you have hundreds of friends who have hundreds of friends, IMO. I joined the group supporting the CEO of Whole Foods, who is being demonized by crazy lefties for opposing the president’s health care plan. The only reason I knew about it is because the founder appeared on Greta van Susteren against some lunatic who kept screaming that 60 Americans die each day because of lack of health care. (I didn’t see it; I read the transcript and I am quite sure he was screaming.) The group still has fewer than 4,000 members, even though the founder appeared on national television.

When I said “circus” above, I meant the whole of political theater, and it seems political theater is what happens in DC every day. While this may or may not be true DC is a daily circus, it is the perception of the people and some just tune out all of it. I’m sure it wasn’t, but I don’t think it would feel very welcoming to people who aren’t comfortable in a church. Maybe it’s an excess of caution, but when the GOP is associated, rightly or wrongly, with Christian fundamentalism, it seems to me a better approach to hold meetings in a neutral place like a school.

Glenn Beck returns to Fox News Channel on Monday after a vacation with fewer companies willing to advertise on his show than when he left, part of the fallout from calling President Barack Obama a racist.

A total of 33 Fox advertisers, including Wal-Mart Stores Inc., CVS Caremark, Clorox and Sprint, directed that their commercials not air on Beck’s show, according to the companies and ColorofChange.org, a group that promotes political action among blacks and launched a campaign to get advertisers to abandon him. That’s more than a dozen more than were identified a week ago.

Most of this we already know but this is starting to snow ball:

While it’s unclear what effect, if any, this will ultimately have on Fox and Beck, it is already making advertisers skittish about hawking their wares within the most opinionated cable TV shows.

The Clorox Co., a former Beck advertiser, now says that “we do not want to be associated with inflammatory speech used by either liberal or conservative talk show hosts.” The maker of bleach and household cleaners said in a statement that it has decided not to advertise on political talk shows.

I wonder how many other companies are starting to think along these lines. More:

The shows present a dilemma for advertisers, who usually like a “safe” environment for their messages. The Olbermanns, Hannitys, O’Reillys, Maddows and Becks of the TV world are more likely to say something that will anger a viewer, who might take it out on sponsors.

“This is a good illustration of that conundrum,” said Rich Hallabran, spokesman for UPS Stores, which he said has temporarily halted buying ads on Fox News Channel as a whole.

I know of several churches which have ‘community rooms’ that you can use just for asking.
My African Violet club has held our annual show at one several times. We give tham a donation when we do this, but they do not require one.

Assemblies of God are not considered mainline Protestant churches. They’re part of the Pentecostal movement of the early 20th century, whose distinguishing feature is a belief that the gifts seen in the book of Acts (prophesying, speaking in tongues, etc.) can be manifested in present-day believers. AG churches are also not known for having the best-educated clergy, as they have only one graduate-level theological seminary and have no minimum educational requirements for ordination.

From (second-hand) personal experience, the schools (in MA) are wicked tough to use for meetings. A Jewish guy I know was on the City Council for years up in Worcester and used to use the neighborhood Catholic Church for his meetings. The schools required too much effort. You need a janitor willing to work off-hours, you need to be responsible for everyone at the meeting not messing with the school, you need permission from everyone from the Principal to City Hall. Even for someone in Government the red-tape was daunting.
The Church just gave him the hall for a couple hours. I assume he made a donation in return for its use, but I doubt it was very expensive.

I am (or was) a member of this particular denomination. The theology is what you would consider “right of center”; not terribly extreme, but definitely not what one would consider mainline. You obliviously know way more than I do about this. There are charismatic churches from all divisions though, yes? My wife and I attend a Catholic Church (well, she does, I get dragged along), and I’ve seen some pretty odd stuff there as well. Faith healing, etc.

I am (or was) a member of this particular denomination. The theology is what you would consider “right of center”; not terribly extreme, but definitely not what one would consider mainline. The problem I seem to be having is that increasingly large numbers of people from my denomination are registering dangerously high on the stupid meters.

I have a number of AG friends. Aside from the gifts of the spirit, which are a little off-putting for non-Pentecostals, there’s nothing taught that you wouldn’t hear in a Baptist or independent evangelical church. I have noticed, however, that the average AG member tends to be less educated and is less likely to work in a white-collar job. No offense, but I’m not surprised to see wing-nuttiness emerge in a denomination where there’s a premium placed on the emotional experience of faith, rather than theological analysis.

Yes, a lot of denominations have charismatic services. I went to an Episcopal charismatic mass once. I was brought up in the Catholic Church, and it seemed to me like Catholicism on acid.

I agree 100% on the political shows. If you advertise on Glen Beck, you get tainted with his muck. FoxNews will adjust their shows if the revenue starts slipping…for them, it’s all about the money.

Boycotts are usually a big waste of time. I am guessing with all the gnashing of teeth and complaining about Whole Foods from these burrheads, that Whole Foods business is actually UP.

This is a new trend- companies are just now looking at the worth of advertising on political talk shows. I think it’s an interesting development that is now expanding outside of just the beck kookiness issue into the realm of all of them. We should, in a sense, welcome this. Clorox is saying it’s not just beck, it’s all of them and they have the right to advertise where they want or don’t want. This could be a whole new ball game if this keeps developing- we’ll see.

This is a new trend- companies are just now looking at the worth of advertising on political talk shows. I think it’s an interesting development that is now expanding outside of just the beck kookiness issue into the realm of all of them. We should, in a sense, welcome this. Clorox is saying it’s not just beck, it’s all of them and they have the right to advertise where they want or don’t want. This could be a whole new ball game if this keeps developing- we’ll see.

It’s their money but, I really hate the thought that corporations would try to suppress political speech.

My Whole Foods is actually a small local chain called Harry’s Farmer’s Market that was bought out but kept the old name. You can spend a lot there on stuff like free-range chicken, or you can get very nice produce, some of it local, for a very nice price. I shop there in spite of the lefty image, but now I might patronize it a little more often.

So, over the weekend I got into a heated debate with a liberal friend (whose wife is a plaintiffs lawyer) about tort reform. His contention is that tort reform in medical malpractice is unnecessary because the insurance companies are collecting premiums but paying out only a small percentage of those premiums in damages. And even if damages are capped, the insurance companies would still charge the same premiums. His argument was that there needed to be regulation of the insurance companies on medical malpractice insurance. My contention is that if you have damages capped, then the insurance companies would lower the premiums. No doctor would need coverage at say $10 million if damages are capped at $1 million. Why would a doctor pay premiums for coverage that wasn’t necessary? Also, doctors won’t have to charge for tests that are unnecessary in order to cover themselves from being sued. I am also not completely convinced that the damages are that low for medical malpractice. If this was the case, then the media and politicians would be able to explain this away and it wouldn’t be an issue. Instead the fact that they are so silent about it suggests that they are afraid of the discussion.

Their chicken and ground beef are not so pricey and they are superior to the big chains. They have a cheap-ass wine there called Gato Negro. It is awesome for the price - $3. Try the Malbec and the Merlot. It tastes like wine that should cost a lot more.

When they run organic ground beef on sale for $1.99/lb, June buys 10-15lbs of it. I’m always amazed at their prices on, for example, bing cherries - usually $1.99/lb.

A “profanity-laced screaming match” at the White House involving CIA Director Leon Panetta, and the expected release today of another damning internal investigation, has administration officials worrying about the direction of its newly-appoint intelligence team, current and former senior intelligence officials tell ABC News.com.

Amid reports that Panetta had threatened to quit just seven months after taking over at the spy agency, other insiders tell ABCNews.com that senior White House staff members are already discussing a possible shake-up of top national security officials.

“You can expect a larger than normal turnover in the next year,” a senior adviser to Obama on intelligence matters told ABCNews.com.

Since 9/11, the CIA has had five directors or acting directors.

A White House spokesperson, Denis McDonough, said reports that Panetta had threatened to quit and that the White House was seeking a replacement were “inaccurate.”

According to intelligence officials, Panetta erupted in a tirade last month during a meeting with a senior White House staff member. Panetta was reportedly upset over plans by Attorney General Eric Holder to open a criminal investigation of allegations that CIA officers broke the law in carrying out certain interrogation techniques that President Obama has termed “torture.”

A CIA spokesman quoted Panetta as saying “it is absolutely untrue” that he has any plans to leave the CIA. As to the reported White House tirade, the spokesman said Panetta is known to use “salty language.” CIA spokesman George Little said the report was “wrong, inaccurate, bogus and false.”

Prognostication: Panetta will be out of a job by the end of the year.

CIA spokesman George Little said the report was “wrong, inaccurate, bogus and false.”

It’s usually a clue. Kind of like a statement that begins: “Let me make it perfectly clear that I have nothing but the utmost confidence in, and am expressing my total support for, (insert dead duck’s name here).”

I’m planning on going to see it. It’s one of Tarantino’s exploitation-style films. It appeals to the part of my soul that remains a perpetual 14-year-old boy. If your soul does not contain something similar, you will be offended by the film. I’d also recommend that you steer clear of the next Three Stooges Film Festival as well.

Speaking of Pentecostal churches, as we were a couple hundred comments ago, this is terribly sad: Oklahoma Pastor Found Dead Inside Her Church.

Brown said Daniels, who served as the church’s pastor for “many, many” years, was at the tiny, one-story building on Sunday for the off chance that a worshipper attended congregation.

Apparently it was so tiny, there were no regular members. The pastor drove 60 miles from Oklahoma City every Sunday, just in case someone needed spiritual guidance.

I’m not really sure - both OC and Rehobeth have decent beaches and some of the same stuff most small resort towns have (boardwalks, rides, bars, restaurants, etc.) I can’t really think of a whole lot of tourist attractions.

You should try to find a good crab place - avoid Phillips Seafood (huge chain) for crabs.

It’s their money but, I really hate the thought that corporations would try to suppress political speech.

Corporations can give political contributions, so I suppose that they can withdraw sponsorship for political reasons without bothering with commercial justifications. But why not simply put out a political commercial in the brand’s name, sending a message of love, unity and cleanliness? They get to promote brand awareness and political sensitivity at the same time.
It would also be more honest.

Well said!! We actually have a Veteran’s Hospital in our town here in the Hill Country. A number of our doc’s went to the VA - got tired of trying to survive on Medicare reimbursement and getting drowned by malpractice premiums. Most don’t last very long. The medical folks (nurses,etc.) are great, but the bureaucracy is maddening.

Not to be contrary, and I think that intelligence gathering is essential, and I think some of the people at the CIA are trying very hard to do good work, (lots of caveats!) but IMHO, the CIA sucks, and needs a deep cleansing and restructuring.
It’s gotten virtually NONE of the important events right over the last 50 years.
We have dozens of intelligence agencies, doing better work with out all the diva bullshit I see from the CIA.
I have several friends that work with them and they can’t stand the petty infighting and bureaucratic nonsense.
I’m not demeaning the individuals that work everyday in the cold, but it seems there is a lot messed up there, and something needs to be changed.

Congress hasn’t helped. I recently read a book that mentioned some of the restrictions put on the CIA that, had they been free to operate, might have been able to prevent 9/11, or get Bin Laden afterwards.

CIA agents are risking their lives, trying to help Americans not get killed. If you want them to stop waterboarding, then you send them a memo, ordering them to cool it. You just don’t go starting criminal investigations.

It’s calculated to do damage to the CIA.

Thanks… I have scanned for malware, but I should identify all the processes running.

I suspect this is coming from outside though.

You need to make sure the server requires a login, for one thing.
And by now, you are probably on a lot of antispam blacklists.

Once you have the server only working for email clients with accounts, you can look at the logs to find out if any accounts have been compromised and are being used for the spamming.

I don’t have a complete answer to that question. There’s a couple issues here, that I’ve tried to hint at in posts below going back to April when I got back. What I can say fairly certainly is this: at some point in this game, saying something takes a long time is going to be the equivalent of saying it’s impossible. And raising an army in a country where security is this uncertain may well be impossible in a realistic timescale for us.

Now, you say, jeez, lots of countries have raised armies during wars, so what’s the big deal? Here’s what I would characterize as some of the major unresolved issues we’re facing:

1. Building anew is harder than renovating.
2. Multinational coalitions are inherently less efficient at army building.
3. Force protection measures in a warzone limit mentoring.
4. We still have limited experience with the culture at our command levels.
5. Giving someone independence before you give them an army limits what you can do later.
6. Growing in size and in quality at the same time is hard.
7. Risk aversion: in some ways, we’ve taught them too well.

Last time I checked, those who can’t distinguish between Muslims in general and Jihadis are usually shown the door. Yes, ‘googleapis’ is the Google content server, and to speed things up I’ve started loading the jQuery Javascript file from there. (It’s a recommended practice, helps the pages load faster.)

And that’s a perfect example of why I wrote the other day that I wasn’t too crazy about NoScript, by the way. It hides problems like this.

The tea party itself was pretty calm. A few speakers who didn’t say anything new to about 1000 people. I was a bit disappointed in the entire event, to be honest. It’s not difficult to make strong arguments against socialized medicine, but most of the event seemed to be name calling and rabble rousing.
