Nirthers Never Go Away, They Just Get Crazier

Weird • Views: 3,738

In a video we posted last month, Rep. Trent Franks (R-Arizona) was the only Republican politician who went on record with an unequivocal denunciation of the mindless “Birther” movement.

Well, looks like Franks may now be joining the kookspiracy.

The other main issue dealt with numerous speakers questioning Obama’s birth certificate and why there wasn’t an investigation into whether he is a naturalized citizen. One woman said a newspaper announcement of his birth in Hawaii was not sufficient. Another asked how he could have a passport without a birth certificate.

Franks said there was not enough evidence that Obama is not an American citizen. He did say there was a lot of conflicting evidence of Obama’s citizenship and that he was considering filing a lawsuit, the only congressman to do so. Franks asked why the president did not simply produce a birth certificate.

The GOP is being held hostage by its own lunatic base. David Weigel links to another article with a comment from someone who was at the meeting, claiming that Franks was hounded by no fewer than nine Birther fanatics.

My suggestion for how to conduct a GOP town hall: Announce at the beginning that you will not entertain any questions whatsoever regarding the birth certificate. When a nirther crackpot inevitably gets the microphone, have the individual promptly removed from the event. Repeat as necessary.

Since he’s on video as saying Obama has a birth certificate, maybe he’s just trying once and for all (we should all live so long) to throw the ‘nirthers off their feet and onto something constructive to criticize about Obama and his administration.

Funny how the articles differ in their descriptions of the same gathering.

A big, boisterous crowd largely supported an Arizona Congressman, who lambasted the Democratic president and his policies

and then we have

Unlike town halls held in other parts of the country, residents at Saturday’s event calmly lined up to ask their questions, without yelling or shouting at each other or Franks.

It’s deja vu all over again.

Four Tennessee state representatives, all Republicans, have signed up to be plaintiffs in a lawsuit against President Barack Obama, aimed at forcing him to prove he is a United States citizen by coughing up his birth certificate.

Let me just say what all the world is now thinking, including their fellow Republicans on the Hill: This is dumber than a box of rocks.

Tennessee Reps. Eric Swafford, Stacey Campfield, Glen Casada and Frank Nicely now have a giant “G” on their foreheads for “Gullible.” The four were so willing to drink the craziest flavor of Kool-Aid, they’ve gotten themselves caught up in a national urban legend that has been thoroughly debunked.

It’s really hard to get a FB group off the ground unless you have hundreds of friends who have hundreds of friends, IMO. I joined the group supporting the CEO of Whole Foods, who is being demonized by crazy lefties for opposing the president’s health care plan. The only reason I knew about it is because the founder appeared on Greta van Susteren against some lunatic who kept screaming that 60 Americans die each day because of lack of health care. (I didn’t see it; I read the transcript and I am quite sure he was screaming.) The group still has fewer than 4,000 members, even though the founder appeared on national television.

When I said “circus” above, I meant the whole of political theater, and it seems political theater is what happens in DC every day. While this may or may not be true DC is a daily circus, it is the perception of the people and some just tune out all of it. Sadly- this just gives the kooks from various factions more stage on which to preform and the politicians dance to strange music even more, alienating more and more rational people. It’s like a vicious cycle and imo it’s the very reason why our Founders warned against special interests.

I’m sure it wasn’t, but I don’t think it would feel very welcoming to people who aren’t comfortable in a church. Maybe it’s an excess of caution, but when the GOP is associated, rightly or wrongly, with Christian fundamentalism, it seems to me a better approach to hold meetings in a neutral place like a school.

Speaking of kooks: Attack on Obama riles Beck’s advertisers

Glenn Beck returns to Fox News Channel on Monday after a vacation with fewer companies willing to advertise on his show than when he left, part of the fallout from calling President Barack Obama a racist.

A total of 33 Fox advertisers, including Wal-Mart Stores Inc., CVS Caremark, Clorox and Sprint, directed that their commercials not air on Beck’s show, according to the companies and ColorofChange.org, a group that promotes political action among blacks and launched a campaign to get advertisers to abandon him. That’s more than a dozen more than were identified a week ago.

Most of this we already know but this is starting to snow ball:

While it’s unclear what effect, if any, this will ultimately have on Fox and Beck, it is already making advertisers skittish about hawking their wares within the most opinionated cable TV shows.

The Clorox Co., a former Beck advertiser, now says that “we do not want to be associated with inflammatory speech used by either liberal or conservative talk show hosts.” The maker of bleach and household cleaners said in a statement that it has decided not to advertise on political talk shows.

I wonder how many other companies are starting to think along these lines. More:

The shows present a dilemma for advertisers, who usually like a “safe” environment for their messages. The Olbermanns, Hannitys, O’Reillys, Maddows and Becks of the TV world are more likely to say something that will anger a viewer, who might take it out on sponsors.

“This is a good illustration of that conundrum,” said Rich Hallabran, spokesman for UPS Stores, which he said has temporarily halted buying ads on Fox News Channel as a whole.

The plot thickens.

Assemblies of God are not considered mainline Protestant churches. They’re part of the Pentecostal movement of the early 20th century, whose distinguishing feature is a belief that the gifts seen in the book of Acts (prophesying, speaking in tongues, etc.) can be manifested in present-day believers. AG churches are also not known for having the best-educated clergy, as they have only one graduate-level theological seminary and have no minimum educational requirements for ordination.

From (second-hand) personal experience, the schools (in MA) are wicked tough to use for meetings. A Jewish guy I know was on the City Council for years up in Worcester and used to use the neighborhood Catholic Church for his meetings. The schools required too much effort. You need a janitor willing to work off-hours, you need to be responsible for everyone at the meeting not messing with the school, you need permission from everyone from the Principal to City Hall. Even for someone in Government the red-tape was daunting.
The Church just gave him the hall for a couple hours. I assume he made a donation in return for its use, but I doubt it was very expensive.

Reporting from Colorado Springs, Colo. - This conservative city is taking an unusual, some might say extreme, step to try to stem its fiscal woes: It’s entering the gun business.

Wow, this story’s sure gonna be unbiased!! Wonder where it came from.

Oh, the L.A. Times!

re: #146 thedopefishlives

I am (or was) a member of this particular denomination. The theology is what you would consider “right of center”; not terribly extreme, but definitely not what one would consider mainline. The problem I seem to be having is that increasingly large numbers of people from my denomination are registering dangerously high on the stupid meters.

I have a number of AG friends. Aside from the gifts of the spirit, which are a little off-putting for non-Pentecostals, there’s nothing taught that you wouldn’t hear in a Baptist or independent evangelical church. I have noticed, however, that the average AG member tends to be less educated and is less likely to work in a white-collar job. No offense, but I’m not surprised to see wing-nuttiness emerge in a denomination where there’s a premium placed on the emotional experience of faith, rather than theological analysis.

Yes, a lot of denominations have charismatic services. I went to an Episcopal charismatic mass once. I was brought up in the Catholic Church, and it seemed to me like Catholicism on acid.

If rational people themselves are getting cold feet about politics, why wouldn’t a company feel the same way and not want their product associated with either Beck or Olberman?

It all gets so tangled. There are boycotts and then there are boycotts of the boycotters. I would be leery of advertising on political shows; it’s a real gamble. When it’s so charged, people are offended and business bleeds. Or blossoms.

It will be interesting to see how the Whole Foods thing turns out. Andrew Breitbart has a new opinion piece urging people to stand up against those who are on the wrong side of history (Mrs. Pelosi and the Whole Foods boycotters), and to “buy organic garlic, herb fresh goat cheese and three-bean salad with quinoa at your local Whole Foods store.”

Screw the Birth Certificate.

I’d like to know how, after a huge fireball of jet engine fuel, and one of (if not the) the largest building collapses that vaporized everything, they just happened to find Mohammed Atta’s passport laying there on the ground, unscathed.

Has anyone found Atta’s birth certificate?!?

That’s because it’s not true:

“According to ABC News and the Associated Press, the passport of hijacker Satam Al Suqami was found a few blocks from the WTC. 1 2 The Guardian was skeptical: “the idea that Atta’s passport had escaped from that inferno unsinged [tests] the credulity of the staunchest supporter of the FBI’s crackdown on terrorism.” 3 Note the passport did not belong to Atta, as is commonly claimed.

Satam Al Suqami was supposedly on Flight 11, the plane that hit the North Tower. In that collision, the building’s core absorbed almost the entire airplane, which hit the northeast wall nearly dead center. “

This is a new trend- companies are just now looking at the worth of advertising on political talk shows. I think it’s an interesting development that is now expanding outside of just the beck kookiness issue into the realm of all of them. We should, in a sense, welcome this. Clorox is saying it’s not just beck, it’s all of them and they have the right to advertise where they want or don’t want. This could be a whole new ball game if this keeps developing- we’ll see.

It’s their money but, I really hate the thought that corporations would try to suppress political speech.

322 Dahveed  Mon, Aug 24, 2009 10:59:42am

So, over the weekend I got into a heated debate with a liberal friend (whose wife is a plaintiffs lawyer) about tort reform. His contention is that tort reform in medical malpractice is unnecessary because the insurance companies are collecting premiums but paying out only a small percentage of those premiums in damages. And even if damages are capped, the insurance companies would still charge the same premiums. His argument was that there needed to be regulation of the insurance companies on medical malpractice insurance. My contention is that if you have damages capped, then the insurance companies would lower the premiums. No doctor would need coverage at say $10 million if damages are capped at $1 million. Why would a doctor pay premiums for coverage that wasn’t necessary? Also, doctors won’t have to charge for tests that are unnecessary in order to cover themselves from being sued. I am also not completely convinced that the damages are that low for medical malpractice. If this was the case, then the media and politicians would be able to explain this away and it wouldn’t be an issue. Instead the fact that they are so silent about it suggests that they are afraid of the discussion.

Opinions?

When they run organic ground beef on sale for $1.99/lb, June buys 10-15lbs of it. I’m always amazed at their prices on, for example, bing cherries - usually $1.99/lb.

For those who might be interested, the Southern Baptist Church, the Assembly Of God Church, and the Church Of The Nazarene are all anti-evolution creationist Biblical Literalist fundamentalist denominations.

The most famous recent Southern Baptist preacher is the late Jerry Falwell. The most famous Assembly Of God preacher is Pat Robertson. The most famous Church Of The Nazarene preacher is James Dobson.

Trouble in Hopenchangeland?

Obama White House v. CIA:
Panetta Threatened to Quit
Tensions Lead to CIA Director’s “Screaming Match” at the White House

A “profanity-laced screaming match” at the White House involving CIA Director Leon Panetta, and the expected release today of another damning internal investigation, has administration officials worrying about the direction of its newly-appoint intelligence team, current and former senior intelligence officials tell ABC News.com.

Amid reports that Panetta had threatened to quit just seven months after taking over at the spy agency, other insiders tell ABCNews.com that senior White House staff members are already discussing a possible shake-up of top national security officials.

“You can expect a larger than normal turnover in the next year,” a senior adviser to Obama on intelligence matters told ABCNews.com.

Since 9/11, the CIA has had five directors or acting directors.

A White House spokesperson, Denis McDonough, said reports that Panetta had threatened to quit and that the White House was seeking a replacement were “inaccurate.”

According to intelligence officials, Panetta erupted in a tirade last month during a meeting with a senior White House staff member. Panetta was reportedly upset over plans by Attorney General Eric Holder to open a criminal investigation of allegations that CIA officers broke the law in carrying out certain interrogation techniques that President Obama has termed “torture.”

A CIA spokesman quoted Panetta as saying “it is absolutely untrue” that he has any plans to leave the CIA. As to the reported White House tirade, the spokesman said Panetta is known to use “salty language.” CIA spokesman George Little said the report was “wrong, inaccurate, bogus and false.”

Prognostication: Panetta will be out of a job by the end of the year.

Apparently it was so tiny, there were no regular members. The pastor drove 60 miles from Oklahoma City every Sunday, just in case someone needed spiritual guidance.

Corporations can give political contributions, so I suppose that they can withdraw sponsorship for political reasons without bothering with commercial justifications. Just heard this on Limbaugh and was struck by it.

Q: How long would it take you to spend nine trillion dollars if you were spending at a rate of $100 per second?

A: Two-thousand, nine hundred years.

Think about that folks.

Drunken sailors would be more responsible than this bunch in Congress. And the sailors would also be spending their own money.
I’m all for replacing the Congress with a bunch of drunken sailors.

There was a great “Li’l Abner” series, years ago, where Dogpatch was threatened by a bird called the Bitingale, whose bite would cause you to radiate such immense heat that you would burn up if you were not refrigerated. Senator Fogbound gets the Yokums to volunteer to test a new government serum which will cure the Bitingale’s bite in a mere 24 hours. The entire family submits to Bitingale bites, and is injected with the serum—at which moment an aide comes running up with the terrible news that there was “a clerical error” in the report—instead of curing them in 24 hours, it will take 24 years.

That reminds me of a story about Al Capp. He was a great mocker of moonbats. Once he was speaking at a college campus, and a moonbat continually interrupted him with shouts of “Fuck you! Fuck you!” Capp let him shout for a while, then said, “now that you’ve told us your name, what’s your question?”

BINGO. Anyone who was thinking of entering the CIA will now give pause. Anyone who is IN the CIA is probably spiffing up their resignation letters

Not to be contrary, and I think that intelligence gathering is essential, and I think some of the people at the CIA are trying very hard to do good work, (lots of caveats!) but IMHO, the CIA sucks, and needs a deep cleansing and restructuring.
It’s gotten virtually NONE of the important events right over the last 50 years.
We have dozens of intelligence agencies, doing better work with out all the diva bullshit I see from the CIA.
I have several friends that work with them and they can’t stand the petty infighting and bureaucratic nonsense.
I’m not demeaning the individuals that work everyday in the cold, but it seems there is a lot messed up there, and something needs to be changed.

Congress hasn’t helped. I recently read a book that mentioned some of the restrictions put on the CIA that, had they been free to operate, might have been able to prevent 9/11, or get Bin Laden afterwards.

Perhaps. I think it’s going to do incalculable damage to the CIA, and therefore to American security, that lasts long after Obama’s presidency is over. It’s an incredibly bad idea.

CIA agents are risking their lives, trying to help Americans not get killed. If you want them to stop waterboarding, then you send them a memo, ordering them to cool it. You just don’t go starting criminal investigations.

It’s calculated to do damage to the CIA.

And by now, you are probably on a lot of antispam blacklists.

Once you have the server only working for email clients with accounts, you can look at the logs to find out if any accounts have been compromised and are being used for the spamming.

Koskidz: LoonWatch Explores the Underworld of Anti-Muslim Blogging

The anti-Muslim blogosphere is a cesspool of some of the most vile hatred and misinformation on the internet. The anti-Muslims cover a wide spectrum though most can be found slithering in the Right-Wing. They range from academics such as Daniel Pipes, self-declared scholars like Robert Spencer and his JihadWatch, to open racists such as Debbie Schlussel, Pamela Geller and the blog Gates of Vienna.

It should be noted that the anti-Muslim blogosphere is not a monolith, they come from various, mostly conservative backgrounds but are only united by a hatred of Islam and Muslims. So it is no surprise that this bloc has in the past turned on one another. The most glaring feud being the one between Charles Johnson (Little Green Footballs) and JihadWatch’s Robert Spencer; a feud that broke out over whether or not the anti-Muslims should join forces with European neo-fascists.

For the wee-weed up Democrats who don’t understand why the war in Afghanistan is taking so long..

“Seven reasons why Afghan army building is a slow process”

Yglesias asks, WRT training the ANA: why is it taking so long?

I don’t have a complete answer to that question. There’s a couple issues here, that I’ve tried to hint at in posts below going back to April when I got back. What I can say fairly certainly is this: at some point in this game, saying something takes a long time is going to be the equivalent of saying it’s impossible. And raising an army in a country where security is this uncertain may well be impossible in a realistic timescale for us.

Now, you say, jeez, lots of countries have raised armies during wars, so what’s the big deal? Here’s what I would characterize as some of the major unresolved issues we’re facing:

1. Building anew is harder than renovating.
2. Multinational coalitions are inherently less efficient at army building.
3. Force protection measures in a warzone limit mentoring.
4. We still have limited experience with the culture at our command levels.
5. Giving someone independence before you give them an army limits what you can do later.
6. Growing in size and in quality at the same time is hard.
7. Risk aversion: in some ways, we’ve taught them too well.

And they also see nothing wrong with saying that LGF contains “hatred of Islam and Muslims.”

Last time I checked, those who can’t distinguish between Muslims in general and Jihadis are usually shown the door.
