The Party of Ron Paul

Politics • Views: 2,150

The mainstreaming of paleo-libertarian isolationist Ron Paul in the GOP continues apace, as wacky Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann announces she’s a convert to the Paulian cult, and has invited the crazy uncle to speak as an expert on monetary policy: Bachmann to host town hall with Rep. Ron Paul.

In an interview with AM 1280 on Saturday, Rep. Michele Bachmann announced that she will have Rep. Ron Paul as her guest for a September town hall forum in St. Cloud.

“I’ll be doing another town hall up in the St. Cloud area in September and we’ll do that on monetary policy. Ron Paul is going to come in and we are going to host something on monetary policy,” Bachmann said.

Bachmann is a convert to the Ron Paul movement, sometimes attending the congressman’s weekly lunches.

He’s right on one thing, people in general are terrified of the uncertainty what government might do with healthcare.

So Ron Paul and Howard Dean are both MD’s that ran for president. Any others?

When did the American right adopt French-envy?

Because Ron Paul is the Jean-Marie Le Pen of American politics.

Even the cultivation of an heir is in the works.

Now all we need is for him to be the nominee so that an incompetent President can safely beat him and preserve his incumbency against all odds.

Now that I am done dry heaving… I think the fascination with Luap Nor is purely a retroactive thing. Many of those of us who voted for McCain (hold more dry heaves…) did so because we didn’t like the rest of the feild. I don’t think McCain would have been much better. Ron Paul starts looking better as we pull away from the hype around the election.

McCain, Obama and Luap Nor, what a sorry bunch of a$$holes, hopefully never to grace the public stage again…

24 Dahveed  Mon, Aug 24, 2009 3:47:32pm

The Republican Party is doing a real fine job of giving people no good reason to vote for them. This continues and Pres. Obama will coast to a second term.

This is good. For a matter of fact, I wish this kind of stuff would speed up a bit. Gather all the nuts together, in all the little bushels, all at the same time and toss it all out.

Then, eventually and hopefully we will have left some reasonable conservatives who will gain a new and fresh foothold in this country and save it from the throws of socialism. Sound like a good time for all thinking conservatives.

I know the progressive glee at these kind of reports, but, I really see a silver lining. A lot of this weirdness in far from new, the far-right, Birchers, militias and other wacko conservatives are really not new, and every few decades (for over a hundred years), they pop up, gain some strength and they have to be knocked back down.

The difference between the conservatives and progressives, we eventually stuff the nuts back in the sacks, the progressive just get further and further left.

Observe Obama.

Speaking of crazies in denial…

I recently browsed through various lefty blog threads about anti-Obama protests to see how they were “coping” with my “Death Threats Against Bush at Protests Ignored for Years” post.

The breathtaking answer? They’re trying to claim that none of the photos were taken in the US! I guess there is no other way to wriggle out of the implications of the report.

Actually, they’re not trying to claim the photos aren’t from the US: they’re just stating it outright as a given fact.

I’ve gone on to a few of them to give smackdowns, and a few heads have exploded. I polnt out that 98% of the photos have definitive attributions, and are shown in context in US repoorts. The main responses to that are:
1. Change the subject.
2. Yell at me and act all huffy.
3. Repeat the lie as if it hadn’t been debunked
4. (most common) Fall completely silent and move on to a new thread.

First time I’ve gone troll-hunting in Moonbat Safari Park in quite a while.

NRCC Adds Bachmann to List of Most Vulnerable Incumbents

The National Republican Congressional Committee has added another Minnesota representative to its list of most vulnerable incumbents for 2010: Rep. Michele Bachmann [R-Minn.] joins Rep. Erik Paulsen [R-Minn.] in the NRCC’s “Patriot Program,” Roll Call reports.

The NRCC announced it is adding 15 more candidates to its fundraising program, bumping the total count of incumbents to 25. Bachmann’s addition means she’ll compete to make a final cut of 10 candidates who’ll participate in the next “Patriot Day,” a one-day fundraiser that brought in almost $100,000 last time it was held, in June. […]

The Swing State Project states that Bachmann is in “real danger” next election; she’s among three “Patriot Program” members elected with the lowest margin of victory in 2008 — three percentage points or less.

Finally, WND asked Bachmann if she could see a day when the candidate who began her political career in jeans and a holey sweatshirt would one day run for the presidency.

“If I felt that’s what the Lord was calling me to do, I would do it,” she answered. “When I have sensed that the Lord is calling me to do something, I’ve said yes to it. But I will not seek a higher office if God is not calling me to do it. That’s really my standard.

“If I am called to serve in that realm I would serve,” she concluded, “but if I am not called, I wouldn’t do it.”

British author Sebastian Faulks, who up until yesterday was a favorite among leftist intellectuals, read the Koran as research for his latest novel, and had this to say:

Author Sebastian Faulks risks Muslim fury by describing the Koran as the ‘depressing rantings of a schizophrenic’

Best-selling novelist Sebastian Faulks has risked incurring the wrath of Muslims by dismissing the Koran as just ‘the depressive rantings of a schizophrenic’ with ‘no ethical dimension’.

The author of Birdsong and Engleby also claimed that, compared to the Bible, the Islamic holy scripture is ‘barren’.

Faulks, who turned to the Koran while researching his latest novel, said: ‘It’s a depressing book. It really is. It’s just the rantings of a schizophrenic. It’s very one-dimensional, and people talk about the beauty of the Arabic and so on, but the English translation I read was, from a literary point of view, very disappointing.

‘There is also the barrenness of the message,’ he told The Sunday Times. ‘I mean, there are some bits about diet, you know, the equivalent of the Old Testament, which is also crazy.

‘But the great thing about the Old Testament is that it does have these incredible stories. Of the 100 greatest stories ever told, 99 are probably in the Old Testament and the other is in Homer.

‘With the Koran there are no stories. And it has no ethical dimension like the New Testament, no new plan for life. It says ‘the Jews and the Christians were along the right tracks, but actually, they were wrong and I’m right, and if you don’t believe me, tough — you’ll burn for ever’. That’s basically the message of the book.’

Faulks read the Koran to help him write A Week in December, which will be published next month.

Welcome to the Salman Rushdie Club, Sebastian!

‘But the great thing about the Old Testament is that it does have these incredible stories. Of the 100 greatest stories ever told, 99 are probably in the Old Testament and the other is in Homer.

That’s just silly.

Why do I get the feeling these policies only extend to auditing the fed instead of getting to the real issue of Congressional budget busting?

New Mexico can’t even prosecute corruption without running into more corruption:

One of two assistant attorney generals prosecuting the case against former Secretary of State Rebecca Vigil-Giron and three others was once fired by one of the defendants in the case, former AG employee Elizabeth Kupfer.

The fact that a prosecutor on the case is charged with trying to secure a conviction against a woman who carried out his firing is one of the main points defense attorneys plan to cite in arguing that current AG Gary King’s office has no business prosecuting the case.

Kupfer’s attorney, Hank Farrah, confirmed in an interview that Kupfer carried out the firing of Assistant Attorney General Chris Lackmann sometime during the administration of former AG Patricia Madrid, who ordered the firing. Farrah would not reveal other details.

During Madrid’s administration — and the time of the alleged crimes — Kupfer was the administrative services director in the AG’s office.

Lackmann was rehired sometime after King took office in 2007, and is now assigned to prosecute the case along with Assistant Attorney General Ann Badway.

Vigil-Giron, Kupfer and the others under indictment — lobbyist Joseph Kupfer, who is Elizabeth’s husband, and media consultant Armando Gutierrez — each face 50 counts including money laundering, fraud, soliciting or receiving kickbacks and tax evasion. They’re accused of bilking taxpayers out of millions of dollars between 2004 and 2006 by falsifying invoices to the secretary of state’s office.

“My client used to work at the AG’s office and she knows the people involved,” Farrah said when asked to explain why he believes the AG’s office has a conflict. Later, after being asked, he confirmed that Elizabeth Kupfer carried out the firing of Lackmann.

Is Sean Hannity Considering Presidential Run In 2012?

Here’s something that’ll surely drive liberal media members over the brink: President Sean Hannity.

Sound crazy?

Well, according to World Net Daily, the conservative talk show host would consider a run in 2012 if he’s instructed by a higher power to do so (h/t Terri Green):

Talk-show host Sean Hannity, a vocal opponent of Barack Obama’s policies, said today he would not rule out a bid for the presidency in 2012.

Egged on by radio colleague Bill Cunningham, Hannity said he would consider entering the front lines of the political fray if God directs him.

“I’ve never made a decision in my life without – whatever destiny God has you’ve got to fulfill it,” he said. “I’m not sure that’s my destiny.”

I believe this conversation happened Friday as Hannity was airing his radio show in front of a live audience prior to his Freedom Concert in Cincinnati, Ohio.

In Ventura’s case, it was a strong independent bloc that didn’t trust Norm Coleman, who had just switched from the Democrat party, or Skip Humphrey, who was too far removed from his father’s legacy to have that outweigh the fact that he was a twit.

In Bachman’s case, I think that’s the district where they tried to run Patty Wetterling, her only qualification being that her son was kidnapped many years earlier, never to be found again. I think independent voters were turned off by the DFL putting up a supposedly unassailable candidate.

The DFL could run a golden retriever for office in the 5th District and still end up with a landslide. Ellison was pretty much a shoe-in even though he had numerous issues surrounding his past and his associations (CAIR founders Nihad Awad and Ibrahim Hooper).

With Franken, they just cheated because it was close, and Norm is too much of an idiot to beat Senator Cokehead.

So do I. And many of those stories contain names that are household names which are still referenced today. Whether one believes them to be true or not, that’s a personal choice. Anyone here could name a dozen Old Testament characters with very little effort.

frankly i doubt anything different would have happened, the ill will goes all the way back to the french and Indian war were the french got the Indians on there side to commit war crimes and frankly it went from there.

it did not help that Indians often got involved in white mans wars with one tribe that ended up in OK. picking the wrong side twice.

there is a interesting Indian painted leather mural in Santa Fe were it shows one tribe and there Spanish allies fighting another tribe with there french or British allies.

some tribes were war like before we ever got here and besides that the Spanish set the record on this.

some times the whole issue is a LEFTIST STRAW-MAN for issues totally unrelated to native Americans such as the arab/Israeli issue.

Not Sherman. But Jackson was a little different. He never ordered a massacre, but he had some extreme ideas on duty and honor. An argument can be made that he got General Richard Garnett killed at Gettysburg.

Garnett had been one of Jackson’s regimental commanders before Chancellorsville. In one engagement, Garnett ordered his men to retire the from the field when they had run out of ammo—a sensible order. Jackson saw it differently and ordered that Garnett be courtmartialed for cowardice. Jackson died before Garnett could be tried and the matter was dropped—but Garnett’s reputation had been severely damaged.

At Gettysburg, now under Pickett, Garnett arrived on scene with a bum leg— he could barely walk. When the time came for the infamous charge, supposedly Gen. Armistead asked Pickett to relieve Garnett — the man would have to ride across the no-mans land on horseback—he’d be a sitting duck. Pickett replied, “General Armistead, you know there is no wat I can do that,” inferring that he would only compound Garnett’s shame if he were to do. Consequently, Gen. Dick Garnett rode out at the head of his regiment.

His body was never positively identified, though many saw him cut to pieces by Union artillery.

Sorry— using that POS Chivington’s name in the same sentence as Sherman and Jackson is repulsive.

Perhaps civilazation does advance though it seems imperceptable most of the time.

The Indian wars were particularly brutal and savage on both sides.

Contrast with today, post WWII, post My Lai, and on to Gen. Patreaus and COIN today with the associated ROE.

War is not by any stretch civilized, but what a contrast. We face AQ and the Taliban, not with the wholesale slaughter of villages but with water and sanitation projects.

Liddell Hart was probably the finest military historian of the 20th Century. And my point is that, love him or hate him, Sherman invented a new style of ruthless total war against men, women, and children later adopted by every modern nation, and modified only by the Geneva Convention.

Given his ruthless pursuit of the Indian Wars, this is especially ironic: “Sherman’s unusual given name has always attracted considerable attention.[4] Sherman himself reports that his middle name grew from the fact that his father “caught a fancy for the great chief of the Shawnees, ‘Tecumseh.’”“

Basis, please. For blood-thirsty and racist. If you think that because he saw that to wage modern war, you had to make it as cruel and demoralizing as possible on the enemy, then that is your opinion based on your assessment of how he conducted his campaigns. He was not a sadistic murderer as some commanders were (on both sides) or who allowed his men to engage in atrocities (like Forrest did).

As for him being a racist, I have never read in his writings that he felt that way. If you mean to imply he did by his assessment of how to wage a military campaign against the Sioux, I would argue more that he looked on it as he might any military problem after considering all the factors. As to his personal feelings, I am unaware of how he viewed the subject.

Your quote made clear that Sherman supported the killing of those who “resisted”. This is not a strike against Sherman. That is my only point. It is reasonable force protection just as is shooting a woman in Iraq wearing a bomb belt.

The Romans practiced scorched-earth warfare—not only when they sowed the remains of Carthage with salt, but when they crushed the Bar Kochba revolt in Judea. It was the Roman devastation that rendered Judea a wasteland until the modern Zionists began to rebuild it—and it is of the Roman behavior in that war that one of their historians wrote, “they make a desolation and call it peace.”

I’d quarrel with General Lee’s observation, in that we have at this point managed to refine war—from our side, at any rate—to the point where casualties are minimized to an incredible degree in comparison with other conflicts well within living memory, yet we have people who carry on over even those minimized casualties as if they were the death tolls from Antietam or the Somme.

Sherman was one of the few West Pointers not to serve in the Mexican War. He spent the time in California instead:

“In 1853, Sherman resigned his captaincy and became manager of the San Francisco branch of a St. Louis based bank. He returned to San Francisco at a time of great turmoil in the West. He survived two shipwrecks and floated through the Golden Gate on the overturned hull of a foundering lumber schooner.[20] Sherman suffered from stress-related asthma because of the city’s brutal financial climate.[21] Late in life, regarding his time in real-estate-speculation-mad San Francisco, Sherman recalled: “I can handle a hundred thousand men in battle, and take the City of the Sun, but am afraid to manage a lot in the swamp of San Francisco.”[22] In 1856, during the vigilante period, he served briefly as a major general of the California militia.[23]”

Sherman’s San Francisco branch closed in May 1857, and he relocated to New York on behalf of the same bank. When the bank failed during the financial Panic of 1857, he turned to the practice of law in Leavenworth, Kansas, at which he was also unsuccessful.

re: #279 albusteve

Steve,

At the risk of sounding presumptuous, I think you’re on the edge of doing something that is a little dicey— judging individuals in the past by superimposing present morality on their actions. Now, don’t get me wrong, but the US’s relations with its native peoples was cocked-up before the revolution and it only got worse with time. We should have made peace with the natives and the British in 1783.

But, the quotes you cite to Sherman are perhaps out of context. They were, being written in responses to massacres —the Fetterman and Custer debacle. Looked at in another light—in the light of a strict military problem—his statements and reactions are understandable, though may not agreeable. Neither he nor Sheridan had created the situation with the Plains Indians, but they were charged with ending it—and they did so using the lessons they learned in their campaigns against the South.

I do not think Sherman was anymore a racist than either MacArthur or Nimitz were in their prosecution of their war.

Anyway—gotta get stuff finished tonight.

No argument. I am merely emphasizing that despite our immense success in making it less black and bloody for ourselves, and even for our opponents, there are people who take these improvements as naught, and argue instead against such action even when it is necessary.

And they blow out of proportion the routine and normal tragedies and oversights that are caused by and known as the ‘friction of war’ and the ‘fog of war’ and screech incompetence - having no awareness of how those factors have occurred in every war ever fought.
the screeching at Bush and Rumsfeld for not having an instant and infinite supply of armored HUMVEES for example when soft skinned vehicles like that were never intended for the circumstances and conditions they were employed in.
By contrast the hedgerow fighting in Normandy, after D-Day and Omaha Beach, make losing HUMVEES (and the troops in them) pale in contrast. Tens of thousands of American troops were lost in the hedgerows, the importance of which were overlooked in the previous months of aerial reconnaissance. Each field was a miniature Verdun and extracted a bloody price. But Eisenhower was not cashiered, nor Bradley or Montgomery. Knowing history is important, especially in providing perspective and coming to reasonable and thought out conclusions.
The left has none of that.

Maybe in the metropolitan areas, not out here in the sticks. As Joe says on Garage Logic, “The closer you get to the country’s tallest buildings…” I can say honestly, I did not vote for any of them, and cannot believe they were even elected. Blech!

If you read the early accounts of the Pennsylvania frontier, the Indians were extremely feared by the early settlers. They were fierce warriors, barbaric by European standards, who spared not men, women, or children. And of course in the pay of the French, they took scalps. Abraham Lincoln’s grandfather was slaughtered and scalped by Indians as he plowed his field.

And as the excellent motion picture, “Last of the Mohicans”, starring Daniel-Day -Lewis points out, the people settling the frontier, and attacked by the Indians, were the poor settlers who had nowhere else to go.

The Corn Field.
I think Bruce Catton’s comment was that it was said as if there had never been any other corn field, nor would there be.

And now, they seek to destroy us all with the most fear weapons of societal destruction— dollar slots and all-you-can-eat buffets.

My final defense of Sherman:

“On hearing of South Carolina’s secession from the United States, Sherman observed to a close friend, Professor David F. Boyd of Virginia, an enthusiastic secessionist, almost perfectly describing the four years of war to come:

“You people of the South don’t know what you are doing. This country will be drenched in blood, and God only knows how it will end. It is all folly, madness, a crime against civilization! You people speak so lightly of war; you don’t know what you’re talking about. War is a terrible thing! You mistake, too, the people of the North. They are a peaceable people but an earnest people, and they will fight, too. They are not going to let this country be destroyed without a mighty effort to save it… Besides, where are your men and appliances of war to contend against them? The North can make a steam engine, locomotive, or railway car; hardly a yard of cloth or pair of shoes can you make. You are rushing into war with one of the most powerful, ingeniously mechanical, and determined people on Earth—right at your doors. You are bound to fail. Only in your spirit and determination are you prepared for war. In all else you are totally unprepared, with a bad cause to start with. At first you will make headway, but as your limited resources begin to fail, shut out from the markets of Europe as you will be, your cause will begin to wane. If your people will but stop and think, they must see in the end that you will surely fail.[28]”

In January 1861 just before the outbreak of the Civil War, Sherman was required to accept receipt of arms surrendered to the State Militia by the U.S. Arsenal at Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Instead of complying, he resigned his position as superintendent and returned to the North, declaring to the governor of Louisiana, “On no earthly account will I do any act or think any thought hostile … to the … United States.”[29]

After the war, General Sherman donated two cannons to the institution. These cannons had been captured from Confederate forces and had been used to start the war when fired at Fort Sumter, South Carolina. They are still currently on display in front of LSU’s Military Science building.[30]”

I became politically active in the Republican party in 1975 when Ron Paul first ran for Congress. He was an idiot then, and he still is.
There were then, and still are, sane Republicans: Bob McDonell, Eric Cantor, John Cornyn, Christie in NJ, many more. I don’t agree with them on every issue but I’m philosophically closer to them than to Pelosi or Reid or Obama.
The GOP has a chance to do things right, to come up with some sensible ideas, to support real reform in Washington, and to win in 2010. If they embrace Paul, it won’t happen.
And I’ll be out the door.

Nomadic Indian tribes had a very different notion of “use”. And if Lincoln’s grandfather was scalped, it was probably a Huron or Iriquois war party in the pay of the French or English. Hardly an “innocent” native Indian band foraging for food.

Um, by weirdos. I don’t think the fact that this nutbar has glommed onto luap nor means he’s suddenly mainstream.

Some people on the left tout Maxine Waters and Barney Frank as possible prez candidates, after all.

375 Liberal Classic  Tue, Aug 25, 2009 5:28:39am

I always wanted the Republican Party to be influenced by libertarian ideas, but not like this. Instead of the pro-freedom, pro-capitalism, pro-science wing, it’s the pro-conspiracy, pro-creationism, anti-Israel wing that is ascendant.
