that's actually sort of interesting, shows the coverage of space by bugs in the environment at night, in response to artificial light, which has been pretty common on the planet for about a hundred years now, somewhat common on a lesser scale for the past several thousand, plenty of time for bugs to evolve new behaviors.

I guess a moth circling a flame is still a bad behavior for the moth, but I'll bet moths in general behave rather differently now then even a hundred years ago.

but not all, I guess - when I go to a night game at Dodger Stadium, there are swifts galore gobbling bugs in front of the stadium lights! I guess the swifts have learned, if the bugs haven't!

Honeybees perform optimal scale-free searching flights when attempting to locate a food sourceThe foraging strategies used by animals are key to their success in spatially and temporally heterogeneous environments. We hypothesise that when a food source at a known location ceases to be available, flying insects will exhibit search patterns that optimise the rediscovery of such resources. In order to study these searching patterns, foraging honeybees were trained to an artificial feeder that was then removed, and the subsequent flight patterns of the bees were recorded using harmonic radar. We show that the flight patterns have a scale-free (Lévy-flight) characteristic that constitutes an optimal searching strategy for the location of the feeder. It is shown that this searching strategy would remain optimal even if the implementation of the Lévy-flights was imprecise due, for example, to errors in the bees' path integration system or difficulties in responding to variable wind conditions. The implications of these findings for animal foraging in general are discussed.

How many of you can perform optimal free scale searching?

Carpet or drapes?

Prepare to either be offended or laugh -

An American businessman is on a trip to Morocco. He has been there for a week and is feeling a bit "randy" and decides to seek out the services of a local brothel.

The brothel is run by a small gentleman in a fez named Hakim. Hakim tells the businessman that he is lucky because he has chosen the BEST brothel in all of Morocco - there is nothing that Hakim can not provide his guests. No request has ever been refused.

"Well I have a modest request, actually" says the businessman after the pitch. "I would like a blonde. A ... um ... complete blonde."

Hakim's face looked a little confused. The businessman motioned and said "I want the top and the grill to match."

"Oh - I see! I have just what you want!" responded Hakim enthusiastically.

"Go up the stairs, go to your right and she is in the 3rd room on the left!"

So the businessman goes upstairs, goes right and opens the third door. He walks in to see a naked woman sprawled out on the bed. Blonde on top. Black on the grill.

The businessman returned to Hakim to tell him of the problem.

"No. This cannot be. Perhaps it was the wrong room - let me take you!"

So Hakim and the businessman go upstairs, then right and walk into the 3rd room on the left.

"See?" asks the businessman.

Hakim smiles and says "I see the problem - let me fix it."

Hakim then runs toward the bed waving his arms shouting "Shooo fly! Shooo!"
