There’s a radio commercial here with Back selling gold for a company. After he finished I thought “He sounded perfectly sane to me.”

Glenn is certainly touching some nerves these days!

After his close encounter with Barbara Walters and Whoopi Goldberg, I thought Beck was kinky. Probably a masochist. That uniform confirms it. Notice the shot is framed above the waist.

I started to watch his program today, didn’t last 5 minutes.

I’m afraid that his alarmist, kooky, view on America will become the mainstream “conservative”. If it hasn’t already.

Why can’t Fox give us Victor Davis Hanson and Christopher Hitchens?

Anyone who thinks it is possible to discuss anything openly and reasonably with a talk show host you don’t agree with is a loon.

There is also that lovely old saying “Never argue with idiots, others can’t tell the difference.”

And now you know why I never call in to talk shows.

64 karmic_inquisitor  Mon, Aug 24, 2009 6:43:08pm

OT -

The CIA torture report is here (pdf).

From what I see, it looks like the EITs (Enhanced Interrogation Techniques) were effective.

Detainee information has assisted in the identification of terrorists. For example, information from Abu Zubaydah helped lead to the identification of Jose Padilla and Binyam Muhammed—operatives who had plans to detonate a uranium-topped dirty bomb in either Washington, D.C. or New York City. Riduan “Hambali” Isomuddin provided information that led to the arrest of previously unknown members of an Al Qa’ida cell in Karachi. They were designated as pilots for an aircraft attack against the United States. Many other detainees, including lower-level detainees such as Zubayr and Majid Khan, have provided leads to other terrorists, but probably the most prolific has been Khalid Shaykh Muhammad. He provided information that helped lead to the arrest of terrorists including Sayfullah Paracha and his son Uzair Paracha, businessmen whom Khalid Shaykh Muhammad planned to use to smuggle explosives into the United States; Saleh Almari, a sleeper operative in New York; and Majid Khan, an operative who could enter the United States easily and was tasked to research attacks [redacted]. Khalid Shaykh Muhammad’s information also led to the investigation and prosecution of Iyman Faris, the truck driver arrested in early 2003 in Ohio. [redacted]

Detainees, both planners and operatives, have also made the Agency aware of several plots planned for the United States and around the world. The plots identify plans to [redacted] attack the U.S. Consulate in Karachi, Pakistan; hijack aircraft to fly into Heathrow Airport [redacted] loosen track spikes in an attempt to derail a train in the United States; [redacted]; blow up several U.S. gas stations to create panic and havoc; hijack and fly an airplane into the tallest building in California in a west coast version of the World Trade Center attack; cut the lines of suspension bridges in New York in an effort to make them collapse; [redacted].

This Review did not uncover any evidence that these plots were imminent. Agency senior managers believe that lives have been saved as a result of the capture and interrogation of terrorists who were planning attacks, in particular Khalid Shaykh Muhammad, Abu Zubaydah, Hambali, and Al-Nashiri.

And

With respect to A-Nashiri, [redacted] reported two waterboard sessions in November 2002, after which the psychologist/interrogators determined that Al-Nashiri was compliant…Because of the litany of techniques used by different interrogators over a relatively short period of time, it is difficult to identify exactly why Al-Nashiri became more willing to provide information. However, following the use of EITs, he provided information about his most current operational planning and [redacted] as opposed to the historical information he provided before the use of EITs.

On the other hand, Khalid Shaykh Muhammad, an accomplished resistor, provided only a few intelligence reports prior to the use of the waterboard, and analysis of that information revealed that much of it was outdated, inaccurate, or incomplete.

And

The detention of terrorists has prevented them from engaging in further terrorist activity, and their interrogation has provided intelligence that has enabled the identification and apprehension of other terrorists, warned of terrorist plots planned for the United States and around the world, and supported articles frequently used in the finished intelligence publications for senior policymakers and war fighters. In this regard, there is no doubt that the Program has been effective.

Idiots can’t be identified through voting records, they can be found only by looking for people who hide behind stereotypes, embrace partisanship, and believe that bumper sticker slogans are a substitute for common sense. I doubt many of you have the sheer arrogance, quick wit, and narrow mindedness to be a talk show host. My tolerance for the likes of Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity, and that ilk is limited. I’ll listen to see where they’re coming from, but I usually won’t stay long.

Anyone who acts as if he has all the answers to life is missing something big. And that pretty much describes the lot of them.

He’s the messenger. It would help if we look past who the person is, if you don’t like him, but listen to who he is exposing. There are a lot of people who want him to shut up, and they are in the White House (Czars)
Our government has been hijacked, and we’d better pay attention this week.

Trot me out a messenger with some credibility and I’ll pay attention.
Let’s see, I’ll use my own sources and the power of reason, or heck, I’ll just listen to Glen Beck! The Readers Digest (bankrupt) version.

re: #64 karmic_inquisitor

From what I see, it looks like the EITs (Enhanced Interrogation Techniques) were effective.

It basically boils down to CIA interrogators threatening some of the world’s worst and deadliest terrorists with nasty and frightening, yet totally fictitious, never intended to be implemented, torture techniques and retribution against the terrorists’ family members.

The allegations have already been thoroughly investigated, a long time ago, by career prosecutors experienced in CIA matters, and in the one case where abuse was found charges were brought.

You don’t spend enough time here to know me.

Second, Rough Riders was an entertaining cartoon. I love John Milius’ work (The Wind and the Lion is a favorite) but it was not history. Besides, I don’t recall seeing Tom Berenger’s TR killing any Spanish prisoners, not do I recall it being in any of the biographies I have read of the man.

If anything, he was an exuberant man who extolled the virtues of living a “vigorous” life. I don’t think, though, he recovered from the loss of his youngest, Quentin, in 1918— killed in action over France.

The more difficult journalistic question is whether any of Van Jones’ ‘green energy’ initiatives make any economic sense, but Beck preferred to play scary music while reciting Jones’s radical past associations, rather than examine the real issues that will affect us now. That’s one reason why some people regard Beck as a self-interested carny and not a serious political commentator.

I’m still honestly trying to figure out when he changed vs. him always being that way. I loved him on the radio many years back, but when I left the states I don’t really know when or have a frame of reference for when he imploded and went total lunatic. re: #200 LA Conservative

My whole point in beating the dead horse that is Beck’s libertarianism is that so many of his defenders constantly associate him with conservatives or republicans. He is neither, he is a libertarian.

And don’t get me wrong. Though I do not see eye to eye politically with libertarians, it does not mean I dismiss, outright, everything a libertarian says. I often find myself agreeing with Stossel or Jillette on many things.

But there is a difference between them and Beck. They do not try to get a point across using hysterics, hyperbole, and populist pandering. Also, they don’t strike me as batshit crazy.

That Beck is relevant in the “public space” is troublesome to me. But so is the fact that disinfomercials, Jerry Springer, and unreality shows are also relevant in the same “public space”. Television is a sewer, producing fast food for the slow mind. And I don’t even get to see all the uncensored nudity, violence, and harsh language in televised movies anymore like I did back in the ’70s.

And seriously, Beck and Goldwater are worlds apart. How you could defend Bircher loving Beck, while at the same time praising Goldwater’s philosophy on conservatism, is baffling.

In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional or disciplinary response[1] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

As a young river-rat long ago, we were taught to avoid certain creatures.

The cotton-mouth moccasin, for that snake not only will bite you, it will attack you (most venomous snakes don’t actually attack you, they try their very best to get away. These fellows don’t).

Alligators, for they will not only bite, but attempt to pull you under and kill you.

Mother bears with cubs. I think that these ladies have established their street cred.

And the loggerhead snapping turtle. Awesome jaw power, and once they latch on the legend says that they won’t let go until they hear thunder peal. You can actually cut the head from the body, and he’ll still keep biting.

I think that LA Conservative must have a touch of the snapping turtle.

Speaking of altered mayo, I tried this recently, and it is awe-some.

Grilled corn:

Git you some of that old school corn, the kind with all the crap still on it.

Peel back the husks and remove the silk, then put the husks back in place, covering the corn. Soak the corn in cold water for at least ten minutes.

Put it on the grill, turning it for 15 minutes. Peel the husks back, exposing the corn cob (kinky!), and turn it on the grill for another 5-10 minutes.

Mix some mayo and lime juice until it is about the consistency of melted butter, then brush the corn with the mix.

Finish by dusting the corn with chili powder and Parmesan cheese.

/sure, everyone has heard of this recipe, but it’s new to me

Being the loudest clown in the circus does not make one a leader.

yes it does it makes one leader of the clowns in the circus… or at least the leader of all the clowns piling out of the little tiny car in center ring…

re: #295 Areozol

I was asking myself the very same question. I don’t get it either.

I do believe the Obama regime is going to be worst than Jimmy Carter’s, and I believe we could be heading for disaster, but my side, the right wing conservative side, isn’t doing a good job of pointing that out. The long term consequences of the Democrat Socialist Party’s reckless spending will hurt the nation for years to come, yet too many on the conservative side are wasting time on this birth certificate crap and assorted kook fringe theories. If the GOP would pull it’s head out of it’s ass and start hammering on the real issues of reckless spending and the Democrat effort to transform our nation into a socialist “paradise”, they could actually make inroads and help make sure our “Comrade President” joins Carter in the ranks of failed one term Presidents.

Unless the GOP starts focusing on the issues and gives the nation some rational alternatives to Ron Paul and the nirther kooks, our nation is in trouble.

People of the world, you, who sit in your superficially secure third countries.

Soviet Unterzögersdorf (pronounced «oon-taa-tsee-gars-doorf») is the last existing appanage republic of the USSR. The enclave maintains no diplomatic relationship with the surrounding so-called «Republic of Austria» or with the Fortress «European Union». The downfall of her motherland — the Soviet Union — in the early 1990s had a particularly bad effect on the country’s economic situation.

It is a great challenge to secure survival for the small but proud confederation. External reactionary forces put the country in danger. It’s a lack of respect due to a morally corrupted and perhaps even non-existing unity of the peoples. The goal of a glorious future is almost unreachable.

But there are a handful of people who don’t give up on a vision for a better tomorrow. Let us tell you the stories of the brave citizens in the beautiful little country of Soviet Unterzögersdorf.

It’s a story that will go into history.
