I think you mean General McAuliffe - general in charge of the 101st abn Div. which heroically defended in the Battle of the Bulge.

Abrams was known as an aggressive and successful armor commander. General George Patton said of him, "I'm supposed to be the best tank commander in the Army, but I have one peer: Abe Abrams. He's the world champion." His unit was frequently the spearhead of the Third Army during WWII. Abrams was one of the leaders in the relief effort which broke up the German entrenchments surrounding Bastogne and the 101st Airborne Division during the Battle of the Bulge.

"During much of this time his unit was at the spearhead of the 4th Armored Division and the Third Army, and he was consequently well known as an aggressive armor commander. By using his qualities as a leader and by consistently exploiting the relatively small advantages of speed and reliability of his vehicles he managed to defeat German forces who had the advantage of superior armor and superior guns. He was twice decorated with the Distinguished Service Cross, second only to the Medal of Honor, for actions on September 20, 1944 and December 26, 1944. (Wiki)
No one can seriously challenge General McCaulife and the 101st Airborne Division for it's valiant defense of Bastogne.
Abrams and Patton FINALLY showed up to relieve the 101st, but it was McCaulife who said "NUTS" to the German surrender order.

I saw the Barbara Boxer "don't call me ma'am, call me Senator because I worked really hard" video again over the weekend (I can't remember what the subject was) on one of the cable TV shows, and it occurred to me that to become a Senator or other Washington politician you don't really have to work hard, you just have to be a better bullshitter than your opponent.

Trouble in TOTUS' vacation paradise: A 26 year old Brazilian painter has died from swine flu, and the locals are outraged. A sample comment:
Who could have guessed that the illegal immigrant crisis on the Vineyard would spawn a potential plague? How about we bust these houses with 10, 15, 20 or more occupants for operating illegal boarding houses and shut these disease-incubators for good? Maybe some properties should be condemned.
Folks, the illegal immigration situation on this island is hitting critical mass. It's bad enough that they steal our jobs, steal our resources, and endanger us all on our streets & byways; now we have sit silently by while their crowded pigsties breed death?
This joke is over. We will not sit quietly, watching as the circle of visible symptoms tightens around us.

Michael Jackson's death ruled a homicide by LA coroner
Michael Jackson's death has been ruled a homicide - and the evidence points to his doctor.
Eight weeks after the King of Pop died, a detective's affidavit revealed Monday what had long been suspected - that the docgave Jackson "lethal levels" of the dangerous anesthetic drug Propofol.
Jackson's doctor Conrad Murray, who has been the chief target of a manslaughter investigation into his death, has not been charged.

You and your goat do whatever you want.
There's a lot of bad science published.
But this, at a glance, isn't even science, but wild speculations, random gobs of math stuck to maps of the globe.
Are you familiar with all the hockey-stick projections of the 1970s?
You going to seriously sit and tell me about a butterfly flapping its wings in the Amazon and causing a hurricane to wash out New Orleans?
Catastrophism has always been considered bad science. OK, it's not always bad science, because it turns out, now and then, an asteroid shows up, or the like. But ANY crazed theory of tipping points has something to contend with, and that's the ACTUAL history of climate on Earth for the last two billion years. There are hardly any occurrences that qualify as "tipping points", and most probably took thousands to millions of years to "occur".

One of the most hellish battles the US Army ever participated in.
A scene from the movie "Patton" has new significance for me. During the advance north during the Ardennes offensive (I hate the term "Battle of the Bulge) Patton looks on with great pride as his men advance through th e cold and snow and re-engage the Germans.
But, take a second to think that those men were not professional soldiers. A year or two earlier they had been clerks, farmers, students, salesmen from all walks of life. In a short space of time, they had been transformed into one of the most effective fighting forces the world had ever seen. Those boys-- men-- were our fathers, uncles and grandfathers. Remember what they endured and what they did.

So unstable equilibria have never existed? Nonsense. It is impossible to break things? Also, nonsense. What about the thaw of the oceans 500 million years ago? Not nonsense.
You are not making any sense.
How about rather than making blanket statements, you contest what is actually in the paper, after reading it, rather than glancing at it? Then say something substantive.

Don't get me wrong, I have no particular animus towards MJ, rather, the circumstances of his decline and overdose - even if it was malpractice are simply not as important as Iran, (have we heard anything about that lately? You think they stopped?), the economy (apparently nothing there to look at), health care (yeah, the debate is over, move along) or AGW (did you know that Greenland is OK now... nothing to fear...).

You are correct imo, but the populace will demand to be catered to, and thus 24/7 coverage of this trial will be had. Just because it's wrong doesn't mean it's not reality.
Besides- think of it this way: it will be it's own stimulus to the local community to have half the world's press covering the trial. California needs this...

Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi will set foot on U.S. soil for the first time next month when he comes to address the U.N. General Assembly. Now he wants to put down stakes in the middle of American suburbia.
Plans to set up a tent and allow him to stay at a Libyan-owned estate in this upscale community 12 miles north of Manhattan, were attacked Monday by neighborhood residents and public officials, particularly after the hero's welcome extended by Libya last week to the lone man convicted in the 1988 bombing of Pan American Flight 103.

There are some that are as you put it, not right. That is unfortunate.
What is tragic is that with Ritalin, our schools are using psychotropics to take what would have been described as normal rambunctious kids a hundred years ago, to turn them into zombified shells of children.
Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn would never have survived our modern government run school system. The "system" would have drugged them into blandness, obedient and half dead.

I'm very much opposed to medicating children unnecessarily, but I'm fully aware that there are some children that truly have an issue. Our brains are still such a mystery it causes me to hesitate on medication, but I have known people who have truly needed it and for them- it's a life changer, and for the positive.

Cheaper than replacing the whole modem. Could also be the port on your computer. Srsly- I think it's your modem. I lived with this issue for two weeks, and almost gave up LGF it was so bad. True Federal Reserve Story.
I donated to the local PBS satation & was given as a "prize" a tour of the local Federal Reserve Bank. When I got there, they gave me a badge & sent me to the 7th floor, some meeting room. I got off the elevator & noticed the flip chart with "tomorrow's new $20" announcement, with a new $20 attached. Got to the meeting room, full of guys with laptops, and realized this was NOT where I was supposed to be. Went back down & got sent the right place. At the end of the tour, I asked to see the new $20. SHOCKA! How did you know about that, it's a big seekrit, blah, blah, blah. We got shown the new $20 & it was fun!

There is no media bias...
Here's a blast from the past. The New York Times, July 9, 2001, reports on George W. Bush's first summer vacation as president:
On Friday, as new unemployment figures painted a newly troubling portrait of the American economy, Mr. Bush placed himself in the same scenes--golfing and fishing in a New England paradise--that once caused his father electoral grief.
Simply amazing.
Here's the Bureau of Labor Statistics report, dated July 6, that "painted a newly troubling portrait of the American economy":
The unemployment rate was little changed at 4.5 percent, five-tenths of a percentage point higher than the average for 2000.
As Barack Obama embarked on his first summer vacation as president last week--also in a "New England paradise," Martha's Vineyard--the most recent unemployment rate was 9.4%, more than double the summer 2001 figure. Covering the Obama jaunt, the Times offers no hint that there's anything wrong with a president taking a vacation during a time of genuine crisis. Indeed, it offers this justification:
Mr. Obama, whom aides described as being amused by all of the gloom-and-doom prognosticating over his health care agenda, did not even consider skipping his vacation. Last year, he talked about the importance of taking a break to avoid "making mistakes."
That makes sense--and in any case, it's not as if the president actually escapes his responsibilities when he goes on "vacation." But the Times's coverage of Obama is a useful contrast to the paper's petty partisan sniping against Bush.

Bush was constantly bashed any time he went on vacation. The media bias against Republicans/conservatives is so incredibly over the top I have to laugh at it.
I'll never forget a story from the '84 Republican convention which lead off with the line 'Blazing heat turned to blasting cold as we entered the convention', implying that if it'd been the DEMOCRAT convention, the a/c would have been set to a much more 'reasonable' level.

Yeah, she's ours...I don't think we'll have any problems again...we don't usually let Spokes out to play with the big dogs (and we won't do it again!)
So she stays inside mostly...and the big dogs only come in at night.
We think this was supposed to be an annoyed nip that just happened to connect as the dog involved has never had a problem with other pets before (we have 4 dogs and a cat)

Before we got married, my wife had a Shepherd/chow/rottie mix that was better with her 5 cats than she was with people. She ended up loosing the dog to cancer last year though.

We have 2 pugs, one puppy (spokes) and one elder statesman (he'll be 11 this year), a Dobie/Rottweiler mix and a golden retreiver. We've been very lucky as all the dogs are good with the kids and vice versa (it was very important to me that the kids learn to be nice to animals when they play...that's why we have a cat)

Good morning.
The futures are indicating that the market will open on the upside.
Fed Chairman Bernanke tapped for second term
President Barack Obama plans to announce the reappointment of Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke on Tuesday, reports said late Monday. The announcement of a second term for Bernanke will be made from Martha's Vineyard, Mass., where Obama is currently vacationing, according to a Wall Street Journal report citing White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.
The Journal report said Obama will credit Bernanke for "pulling the economy back from the brink of depression."
I concur with the reappointment for 2 reasons:
1. After going through a very long learning curve, Bernanke finally seems to understand his job and has figure out how monetary policy in the real world actually works.
2. I do not trust Obama to find someone better. The Tim Geithner experience has been agonizing to say the least and I don't want to give Obama a chance to go find another moron like that.

The New York version of that is the joke about the Jewish couple who go into the kosher restaurant on the Lower East Side. To their amazement, they're met at the door by a Chinese waiter who addresses them in perfect Yiddish.
He then seats them. give them menus, and takes their orders, all in perfect Yiddish.
When it comes time to pay, the husband steps up to the cash register and says to the owner, "What's with the Chinese guy who speaks perfect Yiddish"? "Shhh". says the owner. "He thinks he's learning English!"

Court Orders Federal Reserve to Disclose Emergency Loan Details
The Federal Reserve must for the first time identify the companies in its emergency lending programs after losing a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit.
Manhattan Chief U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska ruled against the central bank yesterday, rejecting the argument that loan records aren’t covered by the law because their disclosure would harm borrowers’ competitive positions.
The Fed has refused to name the financial firms it lent to or disclose the amounts or the assets put up as collateral under 11 programs, most put in place during the deepest financial crisis since the Great Depression, saying that doing so might set off a run by depositors and unsettle shareholders. Bloomberg LP, the New York-based company majority-owned by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, sued on Nov. 7 on behalf of its Bloomberg News unit.
“The Federal Reserve has to be accountable for the decisions that it makes,” said Representative Alan Grayson, a Florida Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, after Preska’s ruling. “It’s one thing to say that the Federal Reserve is an independent institution. It’s another thing to say that it can keep us all in the dark.”
I think they do need to disclose this.

GM Said to Be Close to Agreement on Sale of Hummer to Chinese
Aug. 24 (Bloomberg) -- General Motors Co. may sign an agreement for the sale of the Hummer sport-utility vehicle business to a Chinese machinery maker this week, said two people familiar with negotiations.
Executives from prospective buyer Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co. based in Chengdu, China, are expected to arrive in Detroit early this week for more negotiations with GM, said the people, who asked not to be named because the talks aren’t public. An agreement could be signed and announced during the trip, one of the people said. It will be subject to U.S. and Chinese regulatory approval before it will take effect.
GM Chief Executive Officer Fritz Henderson is working to dispose of half of the automaker’s U.S. brands so the carmaker can focus on the four that remain. The company is eliminating the Pontiac brand, and deals are pending to sell its Saab brand to Swedish sports car maker Koenigsegg Automotive AB and Saturn to Penske Automotive Group Inc.

Lou Gehrig...Norm MacDonald
Announcer: Lou Gehrig, the Pride of the Yankees, realizes he's fighting a losing battle with a devastating illness. On July 4th, 1939, he speaks to his adoring fans for one last time. A day that will live forever in Yankee history!
Lou Gehrig: Today.. I consider myself.. the luckiest man.. on the face.. of the earth. [ crowd cheers ] I was being sarcastic! I'm unlucky! I may be the unluckiest man.. on the face.. of the earth! I have a disease.. so rare.. they named it after me. Yeah, lucky me! [ crowd cheers harder ] You people are hopeless! [ storms off the field ]

I agree!
The best line from the article:
Mr. Obama's bet was that his personal popularity would be enough to push his agenda through. Perhaps that would have been possible before the $787 billion economic stimulus package, the $410 billion omnibus bill that funds the government, the House-approved cap-and-trade bill, and so forth. But these big-ticket spending bills have helped define what the president means by "hope" and "change," and it is through this prism that the American public now views his health-care proposals.
Apparently, the Koolaide is wearing off.
