U.N. Agency Calls for Teaching Children 5-to-8 Years of Age about Masturbation
For those aged 5 to 8, some key concepts to be discussed are:
-- “Touching and rubbing one’s genitals is called masturbation” and that “girls and boys have private body parts that can feel pleasurable when touched by oneself.”
-- That “people receive messages about sex, gender, and sexuality from their cultures and religions.”
-- That “all people regardless of their health status, religion, origin, race or sexual status can raise a child and give it the love it deserves.”
-- “Gender inequality,” “examples of gender stereotypes,” and “gender-based violence.”
-- Description of fertilization, conception, pregnancy, and delivery.

missed the new thread ...
BTW - Last night I finished reading the entire redacted CIA Inspector General report on Enhanced Interrogation Techniques. Here are my conclusions -
1) Waterboarding works. Remarkably well. And the intelligence it got out of the 3 very well trained and stubborn AQ leaders who experienced it led to a cascade of captures and further intelligence that foiled imminent terrorist attacks that were being mounted in the US.
The whole "imminent threat scenarios are hypothetical" counter argument to waterboarding just vanished. There were imminent threats and they were defeated due to the use of waterboarding. in the case of KSM, the report explicitly states that all other techniques had yielded low quality intel or simple disinformation.
2) The CIA had a well managed program of administering EITs complete with training and certification and then forms that were used to record things like "abdominal slap" and "facial slap" and "walling". That may seem creepy to some, but it creates a non-emotional environment of control and professionalism. The few instances of where the law was violated seem to stem from 2 untrained individuals who appeared to have been posing as "foreign" (eg Arab) intelligence officers.
The training forms specifically mention "SERE" which is a Navy training facility here in San Diego County (in the eastern mountains) where waterboarding is applied to students as the learn Survival Escape Resistance and Evasion. That is a very professional program with many graduates who will tell you point blank "Waterboarding isn't torture".
3) Great care was taken to ensure that the health and welfare of the EIT'd detainees was attended to.
This is a stark contrast to the crap that went on in Abu Grahib where untrained National Guardsmen took liberties with detainees that rivalled the Stanford Prison Experiment.
Obama has unleashed a witch hunt to placate the left and it will bite him in the ass big time. He deserves it.

NorCal school still closed after pipe bomb attack
SAN MATEO, Calif. — A teacher being hailed as a hero said Tuesday he had no time to think when he encountered a 17-year-old boy who detonated two pipe bombs at a Northern California high school while armed with a chain saw, sword and explosives.Teacher Kennet Santana, 35, is one of a number of Hillsdale High School staffers who is credited with subduing the bombing suspect. He told The Associated Press he was walking cautiously toward the disruption on Monday morning when he found himself face to face with the boy.
"He had a black tactical vest on with lots of pockets," Santana said by phone Tuesday. "We were maybe six feet away from each other at this point, we're talking seconds, there was not time for a lot of thinking."
The explosions caused neither serious damage nor injury, but the 1,270-student school was evacuated and Santana and the other staff members were credited with stopping a situation that could have played out much more tragically.
"The teachers acted heroically and risked their own lives," said San Mateo police Lt. Mike Brunicardi. "(They) were not taking into consideration their personal safety, they were taking the greater good into mind to save 1,270 students and about 100 school staff members."
"The potential for this incident — 10 pipe bombs, a 2-foot sword and a chain saw — indicate this could have been catastrophic" Brunicardi said.

Ya think?
The authors of the report consulted the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS) in building their curriculum framework. One of the two authors, Nanette Ecker, is a former SIECUS employee.
Like the UNFPA, SIECUS advocates for ensuring that “every person has the right and access to sexual and reproductive health, so that humanity and the natural environment can exist in balance and fewer people live in poverty,” according to the organization Web site. Their stated concern is the “depletion of natural resources” – which is reduced through access to abortions.
The founding director of the organization, Mary S. Calderone, was a director of Planned Parenthood. SIECUS currently belongs to the National Coalition to Support Sexuality Education, alongside groups like NARAL -- The National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League, The Human Rights Campaign, and the National Council of La Raza.

Dick Cheney is more concise -
[Link: www.weeklystandard.com...]
The documents released Monday clearly demonstrate that the individuals subjected to Enhanced Interrogation Techniques provided the bulk of intelligence we gained about al Qaeda. This intelligence saved lives and prevented terrorist attacks. These detainees also, according to the documents, played a role in nearly every capture of al Qaeda members and associates since 2002. The activities of the CIA in carrying out the policies of the Bush Administration were directly responsible for defeating all efforts by al Qaeda to launch further mass casualty attacks against the United States. The people involved deserve our gratitude. They do not deserve to be the targets of political investigations or prosecutions. President Obama’s decision to allow the Justice Department to investigate and possibly prosecute CIA personnel, and his decision to remove authority for interrogation from the CIA to the White House, serves as a reminder, if any were needed, of why so many Americans have doubts about this Administration’s ability to be responsible for our nation’s security.

The Fed is now quietly taking money out of the system
Guess what? The Federal Reserve has not only stopped depositing copious amounts of liquidity into the economy -- it now appears to be in the process of making a sizable withdrawal.
A close look at quantitative measures of monetary policy reveals a sudden change in trend. After growing at unprecedented rates for well over a year, these aggregates stopped rising several months ago and have since declined, according to data provided by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.
I assume this means that the worst is over and the Fed is anticipating economic growth and the inflation that goes along with it.

So Attorney General Eric Holder plans to appoint a special prosecutor who may indict and prosecute CIA operatives who maye have treated terrorist suspects harshly. And some of President Obama's apologists claim Holder is doing this against the wishes of the President?
I don't believe a word of it. And if I am wrong and Obama is really against this, he should either tell Holder to quit it now, or let him know that if any CIA agents are convicted, he plans to pardon them immediately.

Beck has gone after Jones in the past. On July 28, he called the activist a "self-professed communist" and questioned the role he was playing in the administration. His latest assault on Jones came as Color of Change announced that it has secured commitments from 36 companies who have pledged not to advertise on Beck’s popular program, including Wal-Mart and Sprint. However, some of the companies never had a presence on "Glenn Beck." Representatives of Procter & Gamble and AT&T – listed by Color of Change as companies that had signed onto the boycott – told The Times that their companies did not run spots on Beck’s program to begin with.

Schoolgirls in Hamas-run Gaza told to wear Islamic dress
GAZA CITY — Schoolgirls in Hamas-run Gaza have been told to wear traditional full-length robes and headscarves in what is being seen as the latest move towards enforcing conservative Islam in the besieged enclave.
In numerous girls' schools in the Palestinian territory, which reopened their doors on Sunday following the summer recess, students were told they would be sent home if they do not conform with clothing regulations.
"We invite all schoolgirls to wear the jilbab," a senior official in the Hamas education ministry, Mahmud Abu Hassira, told AFP. The jilbab is a traditional, long, loose-fitting robe worn by women in some Muslim countries.
Yet, the Islamist movement insists it did not order girls to wear the jilbab but let school principals know they should no longer ask students to wear the old uniform that consisted of a long blue skirt and matching blouse.
Hamas government spokesman Taher al-Nunu stressed that the decision to do away with the old uniform was taken "in order to alleviate parents' financial burden caused by the blockade and the asphyxiating economic situation."

They are really stretching to connect any good news with Obama...
"Stocks extended a recent rally today after reports showed that consumer confidence and home prices are starting to recover. President Obama's nomination of Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke for a second term added to the positive sentiment, CNNMoney reports. The Dow Jones industrial average added 30 points, or 0.3 percent, according to early tallies."
[Link: money.cnn.com...]
Yet, at the same time...
"Aug. 25 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. unemployment will surge to 10 percent this year and the budget deficit will be $1.5 trillion next year, both higher than previous Obama administration forecasts because of a recession that was deeper and longer than expected, White House budget chief Peter Orszag said."

[Link: www.bloomberg.com...]
Of course, they think we are stupid, we don't see this, we don't understand this, we can't put two and two together and get five like they evidently do.

Educators in the Gaza Strip have begun enforcing an unofficial decree by the Hamas leadership requiring high school girls to wear Islamic dress, despite Hamas Education Minister Muhammad Asqoul denying such a policy as recently as two days ago, Arab news outlets reported.
"Palestinian society is committed by nature and does not need decrees to force it to be so," Asqoul said, according to a front-page report by Qays Safadi in the left-leaning Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar (Arabic link).

Mt. Rushmore was surprisingly interesting. Not the sort of place I would normally go, but the kid's were interested so we made the stop, and I'm glad we did.

Great breakfasts there, and dirt cheap. And more utter crap than the law ought to allow, I suppose. But I love the place - to me, it's a huge success story, a guy who was handed a sack full of nuthin' and turned it into a gold mine with little more than his bare hands.
The region is full of such places, most not as successful, most in danger of fading away forever as youngsters move on to a less hard-scrabble existence. See 'em while you can; they'll all be gone in another generation.

We missed it on our last trip; the show by that name was on at the time, and I heard it had degenerated into suckitude.
Gambling is slowly swallowing everything out there. There are slots in party stores, laundromats, gas stations - all over the damn place. I don't see this as a good thing - the areas these places are in look just as impoverished as can be, and the slots are just sucking what little bit of cash there is out of the poor.

Hell, I got a slot in one of my bedrooms.
I remember when computers were first communicating with "bulletin boards" and I had mentioned to someone wouldn't it be a hoot if someday we just use our computer to bring gambling right into our homes.
Shit, I should realized what I had said and moved off shore and set up a on line gambling site.
That was about 1982.
(I also invented Ebay in 1983)

Yes - you're right about the name. We thought we could just stop in and hire some horses for a trail ride. No such luck - booked solid. I remember us talking about how nice the cabins looked and how someday we'd book a stay there (well you know how that works) maybe someday.
Yeah - you've gotta book months in advance. We planned a year ahead, so there wasn't a problem.
They have an enormous buffalo herd on the land there, managed by the state, and every fall they have a huge roundup festival. Never been, but it's on my list of places to be some day. Looks like a great time.
And if you're in the area in July, you're not far from Sturgis; jump on your hog, break out the assless chaps and...well, enjoy, I guess. ;-)

I belive an authentic burgoo requires squirrel.
Sorry about the spelling. Authentic, I don't know, it's all based on Hunters sytled stews, burgoo traces roots to the Irish, yet the name speaks to the eastern European root in the word bigos.
I've had burgoo in Kentucky and bigos in Tykochin Poland, it's all tasty.

Sen. Ted Kennedy Wears Flip-Flops
Back in 2004, Senator Ted Kennedy encouraged the Massachusetts state legislature to amend the rules for replacing an outgoing U.S. Senator. At the time, fellow Massachusetts Senator John “Flip-Flop” Kerry was running for president while the governor was GOP-man Mitt Romney.
Obviously the prospect of Romney appointing a Republican to Kerry’s potentially vacant seat was too much for Kennedy to handle. So with Kennedy’s encouragement, the law for replacement changed: a special election has to be held within 5 months of the seat becoming vacant.
That was then. This is now.
Sensing his own mortality, Senator Kennedy is seeking to change the law AGAIN. He sent a letter to Massachusetts state leaders and Democratic Governor Deval Patrick asking that the governor be allowed to appoint an interim-Senator until a special election can be held. Kennedy says:
It is vital for this commonwealth to have two voices speaking for the needs of its citizens and two votes in the Senate during the approximately five months between a vacancy and an election.
In 2004 that five months was critical to avoid the horrific possibility of having a Republican senator from Massachusetts. Now, any vacancy leaves the Democrats with one less vote in the Senate, and with Kennedy’s lifelong goal of health-care reform on the line it’s imperative that Massachusetts have two voting senators at all times. You know, because he said so.

The Fed is now quietly taking money out of the system
I assume this means that the worst is over and the Fed is anticipating economic growth and the inflation that goes along with it.
I hope that is so, but it doesn't look like we are actually improving yet, just getting less worse. The OMB came out with an updated forecast that GDP will shrink 2.8 percent this year. That's a big number. When we start growing again, then we can say the worst is over and we are in recovery.

And a good evening to you! Getting ready for a household invasion by the almost-3 year old grandson is the very best medicine there is on the planet! He is coming here tomorrow, and we are giving him his birthday gift, a Handy Manny tool box. So help me, he would try to drive here from Brooklyn, over 2 bridges on his own!

Well, this is good news, that the fed has reduced their new bubble from 10x the original bubble money supply to "only" 8x. Somehow I'm not ready to break out the champagne, however.
And remember, the fed is *trying* to reignite inflation as a way to monetize all these underwater mortgages. So far they have failed. Like pushing on a stuck door, pushing harder and harder, until ... splat!

It's been a while since I've played publicly. When it isn't the main source of income, the motivation to lug all that crap around, do rehearsals, hang out at weird hours, etc. just isn't there.

LOL. Ok, that's about as close to the truth as I could possibly ask for, because that's about where I come from. As a keyboard player, there is just no way I want to drag the stuff out just for an off and on gig anymore. And all the "party" part is just not me anymore.

"Read that book. Read this book," he says, gesturing toward the nearby table. I see something from Weight Watchers and a Harry Potter paperback—but the governor is referring to the "The Road to Serfdom" by Frederick Hayek and "The 5000 Year Leap" by W. Cleon Skousen. "Read Amity Shlaes's 'The Forgotten Man.' Amity's book is very eye-opening—scary—for me."
Sorry, it's the subscription-requiring WSJ.

Funny...all this talk about The White Album, and not a single mention of "Revolution 9" -- probably the first noise/industrial "song" on a Top 40 album.
I might not be popular for saying this, but there was a lot of crap on "The White Album." It was released when the Beatles were at the top of their career and "more popular than Jesus" and they knew that they could release any old shit and people would buy it anyway.

Hey, seriously, Barry Manilow is the first cousin of my first cousin's ex, and he is the nicest guy...he is like an uncle to her sons, and is still a part of the family. We were his guests, years ago, at a theatre in Manhattan, and he invited us into his dressing room after the show. It was quite a feeling to see all the celebs waiting to talk to him look at NY Grampa and me, as we were led in first! He really has no airs about him, and is very generous to charities.
We chatted about the kids, family, etc. His mother zt"l was a pistol! ;)
We haven't seen him since, as he does not live in NY...but that he is now a great uncle to my cousin's grandchildren?

By your standards, I'm probably hopelessly ignorant, but if you'd be willing to give me at least a starting point, I'd be grateful. Aside from looking up and using a few trig formulas, the last math I've done beyond arithmetic is two not-very-good years of algebra and one disastrous one of plane geometry forty-ump years ago in HS. Update on the Nirthers...
Trent Franks Is Signing on to the ‘Birther Bill’
Bethany Haley, a spokeswoman for Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), has told WorldNetDaily that her boss is more interested in the conspiracy theories about Barack Obama’s birth than he had previously let on. Yesterday, Haley said that Franks had been convinced of Obama’s citizenship but wanted to see the proof anyway. Today, Haley says that Franks actually considered pursuing the “birther” conspiracy theories in 2008.
...
Haley also told WND that Franks “today joined the list of supporters of the demand for proof from future candidate.” The congressman is not yet listed as a co-sponsor of Posey’s H.R. 1503 at GovTrack or Thomas, and I’ve put in a call to check this out.

You think that is bad? Just 3 months ago Obama's white house predicted the deficit would only be about $4 Trillion. So in 3 months the deficit has TRIPLED.
Now ask yourself - how accurate do you think the $9 TRILLION prediction is? Based on ANY government forecast in the past, it seems to me the deficit will be closer to $12-15 TRILLION.

Yeah, I meant Hick-Hop. They're a great band. I've heard they've been more tolerable politically lately since one of their very liberal founding members is on maternity leave. I used to be in a band with one of their guitarists. He left DC for Austin about 6 years ago to play with them.

Leftist outrage?
1 suspect in custody following Dem HQ vandalism in Denver
Maurice Schwenkler wore a shirt over his face, a hooded sweat shirt and latex gloves before he and another man fled the scene on bicycles, police said. Schwenkler was apprehended after a short chase. The other suspect remains at large.
While Schwenkler does not appear in the state's voter registration database, a person by that name in November 2008 received $500 from a political 527 committee called Colorado Citizens Coalition for "communications," according to campaign finance disclosures.
The accountant or the 527 appears to be the same woman who handles the books for many other Democratic-leaning political committees.
A Maurice Schwenkler also signed an online 2005 petition to free anti-war Christian protesters who were captured in Iraq.
State Democratic Party Chairwoman Pat Waak initially blamed the vandalism on animosity surrounding the health care debate, though Denver police declined to comment on possible motives.

McCain Says Obama Respects Constitution
I guess the old man may be going senile, because I distinctly recall Obama saying the Constitution is flawed.
Yes and no. Here's the actual quote:
I think it’s a remarkable document…The original Constitution as well as the Civil War Amendments…but I think it is an imperfect document, and I think it is a document that reflects some deep flaws in American culture, the Colonial culture nascent at that time.
African-Americans were not — first of all they weren’t African-Americans — the Africans at the time were not considered as part of the polity that was of concern to the Framers. I think that as Richard said it was a ‘nagging problem’ in the same way that these days we might think of environmental issues, or some other problem where you have to balance cost-benefits, as opposed to seeing it as a moral problem involving persons of moral worth.
And in that sense, I think we can say that the Constitution reflected an enormous blind spot in this culture that carries on until this day, and that the Framers had that same blind spot. I don’t think the two views are contradictory, to say that it was a remarkable political document that paved the way for where we are now, and to say that it also reflected the fundamental flaw of this country that continues to this day.
Take for example Article I, Section 9 that kept congress from banning slavery until 1808:
Section 9 – Limits on Congress
The Migration or Importation of such Persons as any of the States now existing shall think proper to admit, shall not be prohibited by the Congress prior to the Year one thousand eight hundred and eight, but a tax or duty may be imposed on such Importation, not exceeding ten dollars for each Person.

Maybe I am showing my bias here as a legislator as well as a law professor, but you know I am not optimistic about bringing about major redistributive change through the courts. You know the institution just isn't structured that way... Any of the three of us sitting here could come up with a rationale for bringing about economic change through the courts. I think that, as a practical matter, that our institutions are just poorly equipped to do it.

Mapes had information prior to the airing of the September 8 [2004] Segment that President Bush, while in the TexANG [Texas Air National Guard] did volunteer for service in Vietnam but was turned down in favor of more experienced pilots. For example, a flight instructor who served in the TexANG with Lieutenant Bush advised Mapes in 1999 that Lieutenant Bush “did want to go to Vietnam but others went first.” Similarly, several others advised Mapes in 1999, and again in 2004 before September 8, that Lieutenant Bush had volunteered to go to Vietnam but did not have enough flight hours to qualify.

I heard Mapes in a radio interview a couple of years ago, and she answered to the request for proof of her allegations that the burden of proof was not on her because she didn't have the original of the memo. So the burden of proof fell to GWB.

I'm curious to know if there's anything legally that can be done to her, if this is confirmed? The left loves litigation and I would think that intentionally trying to manipulate an election would merit a big fucking lawsuit and come with big fines and lots of time in the hoosegow.
Just saying

I'm laughing to hard just have to share this...
This video shows that Michael was still alive after his dead body was transported to the Los Angeles Dept. of Coroner I checked the license plate number and it looks like the King of Pop is jumping out of the same van, his dead body has been in. I got the original video tape from a trustworthy source. I know him for years. And I am sure it´s real and Michael is alive.
Oh no. I can't watch the video at work, but I hope they don't go all Elvis with MJ. Although there might be some value in scaring small children into doing things by saying that MJ will get them if they don't.

There are significant hurdles to clear before rail guns become useful in the field. Not the least of which is outperforming the relative simplicity of hurling a warhead downrange with a bit of gunpowder.
Correct. There is no comparably efficient way to storing energy than in an explosive cartridge. A nuclear powered ship could conceivably create enough to avoid having too store explosives just to send out the shells, but then there is the fact of if it ain't broke don't fix it. After all, an electric motor is vastly simpler than a piston engine, or even a turbine, but look how long it takes to convert the infrastructure to support it.

Holbrooke: Persian Gulf oil money fuels Taliban insurgencies
America's top diplomat for Afghanistan and Pakistan says the deadly Taliban insurgency in those countries relies heavily on funding from the oil-rich Persian Gulf.Such money even outpaces the cash gathered from Afghanistan's multibillion-dollar exports of opium and heroin, said Richard Holbrooke, the United States' special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, in an interview Tuesday with CNN.
"It seems to be more from individuals carrying money in their suitcases," Holbrooke said. "Sometimes they are taking advantage of the pilgrimage [to the Muslim holy cities of Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia]. Sometimes from hawala [an informal international system for money transfers]. Sometimes from charities.

Morale at CIA Plummets as Panetta Makes a Bad Situation Worse
When Leon Panetta took over the CIA earlier this year, he was described (in some circles) as the wrong man for the wrong job at the wrong time.
Seven months later, that assessment is proving eerily prescient. As the agency prepares for a politically-charged investigation of its interrogation practices, Mr. Panetta’s leadership is noticeably lacking. Indeed, there is growing evidence that the director’s recent actions have made a bad situation worse.

Gus, here's the thing.
Let's say you are driving to work and an unemployed drunk runs a red light (God forbid) and T-bones you. You get taken to the ER with a closed head wound and are placed in an induced coma to reduce brain swelling. You don't die, but you are pretty much gorked for three years, with rehab, home care, &c. You *will* get treated under the system in place, and it will cost north of a million bucks. Guess who pays for it? Your neighbors.
Is that fair? Is that equitable? Fact is, we are *already* paying for the uninsured, with very little cost control. It's a stupid system, IMO.

Yes, it does work out that way. Still can't afford it right now.

re: #660 buzzsawmonkey
I am complaining about the concept of "the bill"--actually, multiple bills.
I accept the proposition that the way we pay for healthcare in this country is screwy. That is not the same thing as healthcare itself--and the Administration has been laboring mightily to obscure the distinction between "healthcare" and "payment for healthcare."
I am complaining about the concept that there is a need or mandate to rush to fix whatever is wrong, when there is no one Administration bill and so every time someone raises an objection to the turd in Bill A, the apologists chime in "well, that won't be in the final."
I am complaining because there is no "right to healthcare" anywhere in the Constitution, so if the Administration wants to provide something it can start by taking "rights language" off the table.
I'm complaining because, stupid as some of the protests have been, the offended response from the proponents of this juggernaut have been more stupid still, and arrogant as hell.
I am complaining and questioning right along with you.
If people honestly think there are no real complaints or questions about the bill, just complaints about "death panels" and such - then they are not listening very well.

You make a good point, and I believe most people who aren't hopeless freeloaders want to take care of themselves. So instead of a punitive tax for not buying health insurance, how about tax credits or deductions? How about making it easier for individuals, especially the self-employed, to buy a policy? Changes like that would not require the complete overhaul of the current system, and a public option would not be necessary.

It won't reduce costs because it doesn't really try, and for that matter I can't imagine how it could.
It might help people purchase insurance by making it deductible and issuing a tax credit for people whose income doesn't cover it sufficiently. Hmm, what recent Republican presidential candidate suggested pretty much that?

Very few people are actually complaining about the bill. They're complaining about death panels and fascism. I wish we had people complaining about things actually in the bill.
Can Democrats actually tell you what's in the bill? Most of them haven't bothered to read legislation before them, so why start now? I'm sure some have been fed their talking points in caucus, but they probably don't have any idea what is in the bill.
As in, did you realize that there's a provision in the bill that's designed to give the IRS no leeway in penalties - it's strict liability if you screw up on your tax returns. That's primarily because penalties is a big way to raise revenue. It's a revenue thing,
Then, there's the tax treatment of businesses that want to provide coverage, but don't provide the government's accepted minimum coverage.
Those businesses would be hit with $100 per day per employee until they come into compliance.
Employers who elect to provide coverage but whose health benefit plans fail to meet the proposal’s minimum health coverage participation requirement are subject to an excise tax of $100 per day for each employee to whom the failure applies.30 The excise tax does not apply to (1) periods during which an employer used reasonable diligence but did not discover any failures, and (2) failures that are corrected within 30 days of discovery (but only if such failures are due to reasonable cause and not willful neglect). Excise taxes imposed on employers for unintentional failures (i.e., due to reasonable cause and not to willful neglect) are limited to the lesser of: 10 percent of the aggregate amount paid or incurred by the employer during the
preceding taxable year for group health plans, or $500,000. There are parallel civil penalties provided in ERISA and PHSA.31 The excise tax with respect to any failure is reduced (but not below zero) by the amount of any civil penalty collected under these parallel provisions.
Oh, and this would take effect for taxable years beginning after 2012.

The biggest factor is that there are technologies and drugs and services people want. This was not the case even fifty years ago. And the trend is to more (expensive) tech in medicine.
"The answer" is for the feds to underwrite some insurance, some services.
But not all, that does not follow and will not work, and does not in any way address the secular trends.

Chuckie Schumkie on Meet the Depressed.
And the public option we've proposed is not one of these big government control things. The government sets it up. It has a different model. It doesn't have to make a profit or merchandise as much, so its costs are probably 20 percent lower. But then, on a level playing field, it competes with private insurance. And one thing I want to underscore, David, is it not a mandate, it's an option. If you like your, your present insurance, whether you're an employer or an individual, you keep it and it doesn't change.

Health care costs are a big issue. Until there is a discussion--open, comprehensive--about the reasons for those costs, "health care reform" is not an issue at all.
I tell my clients that money is the last thing you talk about in a contract negotiation, because until you know what's being bought or sold you don't know what the price should be.
The same principle applies here. Until the problems are discussed--costs, their cause and the reasons for those costs--are discussed and there is some nominal agreement on what to do to address those causes, there is nothing whatsoever to talk about. But instead, we are getting proposals to "reform the system" without discussing these things, so nobody knows what the hell is being "reformed."
No wonder this whole thing resembles the confusion of a fire in a whorehouse.

Exactly.
I have yet to see any leader articulate the problem clearly, and relate the problem to the proposed solution.
Why are costs high? Are we getting what we pay for? What role would tort reform play in bringing costs down? What role does Medicare and Medicaide play in the current state of costs?
I remember when health insurance was for 'big' things like accidents, operations, major illnesses. You paid out of pocket for routine care. Now many people expect that doctor visit to be free and unions flip out over $5 copays. Insurance is not the same thing as healthcare. If insurance is truly 'broken', buying people a ticket to the broken system seems counterproductive.

Last I heard the Blue Dogs were balking at having a public option and that it was unlikely to happen. Personally a prefer it that way.
As do I. I'm all for reform, but I don't want a government takeover. And a takeover is the probably end result of a public option.

Ok, so I just wasted an hour on the WH conference call for Physicians.
2700 doctors listened in.
The summary was that "Our System is not working, and we must change it" (direct quote.)
All questions asked were softballs, and no actual information on how anything can be done was offered. Some blather about preventive care was mentioned, nothing useful. A lot of repetitive verbiage about co-pays and management improvements (read: expand government spending) was offered. They threw a barb at the tort reform in Texas ("results not what was expected.") Someone suggested a WH conference on "end of life issues." They closed the call because it was "time for the doctors on the East coast to go to sleep [9:30 PM]"
They're hoping we stay asleep.

Myth #3 Americans have a higher infant mortality rate
Many countries in the world do not count infant mortality the same. Even first world countries will not count babies that are born alive and die within a day or so. They just mark those babies as miscarriages. This may tell you something about how they intrinsically don’t value life. In the US however, we count every baby as a live birth the moment he or she is born.

Many nations do not count very small babies as live births. Hence, they don’t count as deaths either. In France and Belgium, for example, babies born before 26 weeks are automatically considered stillborn, states Bernardine Healy.

807 | 5string Wed, Aug 26, 2009 8:18:30am |
About the strings: The big long neck instrument in the back is an acoustic bass. It has 4 strings normally tuned the same as the lowest pitched 4 strings on the guitar - EADG. The mandolin that Tim O'Brien (the vocalist) is playing actually has 8 strings. They are arranged in 4 pairs tuned to GDAE. This is to mostly to increase the volume for this small instrument and it provides some sweet overtones. They appear visually as 4 strings unless you look closely. When his fingers fret the strings he actually presses the pair. The guitar and the slide guitar each have 6 strings. In both cases they are using brass wound strings for the 4 lowest pitch strings and so the 2 unwound high strings are almost visible. The guitar player is playing left handed so his lowest pitched strings appear to be on the other side of the fret board. The brass winding around the steel core increases the mass of the string so they can be stretched tighter to produce more volume at low frequencies.
Sorry if someone already explained this but I only got through the first 100 or so comments on this thread.
