Here's an even more interesting analysis - and interactive maps. What most people think of Manhattan didn't even exist 400 years ago. The shoreline was hundreds or thousands of feet from where it is now. We've expanded the shore in ways large and small.
Most recently, that includes the Battery Park City along the Hudson River in Lower Manhattan. It was built upon the ground excavated in the course of the construction of the World Trade Center.

Reminded me of the "clear cut" and "Spotted Owl" wars of the 80s over on the left coast.
Someone made a poster of this shot from space showing the small brown patches on the Olympic Peninsula that were the clear cut areas and then made reference to the far right of the picture - across Puget Sound and how it was done "right" on the Seattle side - Clearcut and Paved!

Another interesting fact about Manhattan. Some of the oldest parts of the island of Manhattan will be part of the newest - the excavations making up the 3d Water Tunnel, the 7 line extension and 2d Avenue Subway lines will all expose some of the oldest rocks under Manhattan - and will form the basis of the most modern infrastructure in the City.

PROBLEM with land fill is if you have a earthquake is that it almost turns into a liquid as is what happened in the parts of San Fran that were made out of land fill. the biggist Earthquake in America was the one that hit new madrid fault. so when it happens again Chicagostan might have some problems because much of the lake front is also built on landfill.

I saw some show a while back in which archaeologists were digging in Manhattan. Anything in America seems so relatively (to things in Egypt) new to me, I couldn't imagine why they were digging. What they found in the old landfills that make-up much of what is under Manhattan was fascinating.

The San Francisco landfill started during the Gold Rush, when ships were abandoned as soon as they docked at the harbor, and left to rot. Every time they dig around the area east of Montgomery Street, they unearth old timbers and refuse from the mid-19th century.
Of course, since I work in a highrise office right in the middle of the landfill zone, I'm not exactly looking forward to the next Big One...

Even at the time of the Revolution, New York city didn't extend much beyond Wall Street. Haarlem (as it was still spelled) was a village up north aways. And the Bowery was just that -- a farm (that's what the Dutch word means).
During the Revolution Washington fought a running battle through the woods, farms, and swamps of Manhattan Island. Hard to believe that nowadays.

The name Manhattan ("hilly island" or possibly "place of intoxication") is from the Algonquian languages of the earliest known inhabitants of the area. Legend has it that the island was purchased from the natives for $24 in beads and other such trinkets. Explorers however, paid the wrong tribe, who were glad to accept money for an island that wasn't even theirs.

A few years after I was born, my Dad met a stranger who was new to our small Texas town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this enchanting newcomer and soon invited him to live with our family. The stranger was quickly accepted and was around from then on.
As I grew up, I never questioned his place in my family. In my young mind, he had a special niche. My parents were complementary instructors: Mom taught me good from evil, and Dad taught me to obey. But the stranger...he was our storyteller. He would keep us spellbound for hours on end with adventures, mysteries and comedies.
If I wanted to know anything about politics, history or science, he always knew the answers about the past, understood the present and even seemed able to predict the future! He took my family to the first major league ball game. He made me laugh, and he made me cry. The stranger never stopped talking, but Dad didn't seem to mind.
Sometimes, Mom would get up quietly while the rest of us were shushing each other to listen to what he had to say, and she would go to the kitchen for peace and quiet. (I wonder now if she ever prayed for the stranger to leave.)
Dad ruled our household with certain moral convictions, but the stranger never felt obligated to honor them. Profanity, for example, was not allowed in our home... Not from us, our friends or any visitors. Our longtime visitor, however, got away with four-letter words that burned my ears and made my dad squirm and my mother blush. My Dad didn't permit the liberal use of alcohol. But the stranger encouraged us to try it on a regular basis. He made cigarettes look cool, cigars manly and pipes distinguished.
He talked freely (much too freely!) about sex. His comments were sometimes blatant, sometimes suggestive, and generally embarrassing.
I now know that my early concepts about relationships were influenced strongly by the stranger. Time after time, he opposed the values of my parents, yet he was seldom rebuked... And NEVER asked to leave.
More than fifty years have passed since the stranger moved in with our family. He has blended right in and is not nearly as fascinating as he was at first. Still, if you could walk into my parents' den today, you would still find him sitting over in his corner, waiting for someone to listen to him talk and watch him draw his pictures.
His name?... .. .
We just call him 'TV.'
(Note: This should be required reading for every household!)
He has a wife now...We call her 'Computer.'
Their first child is "Cell Phone".
Second child "I Pod "

Simple Analogy
An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before but had once failed an entire class.
That class had insisted that socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.
The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on socialism. All grades would be averaged and everyone would receive the same grade so no one would fail and no one would receive an A.
After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B.
The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy.
As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little.
The second test average was a D! No one was happy.
When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F.
The scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.
All failed, to their great surprise, and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed.
It could not be any simpler than that.

There is a great old bar (established 1817) called the EAR Inn (the neon of the B in the word BAR burnt out decades ago and let it looking like an E) that has a a sign that marks where the shoreline was in 1820. The old docks were literally right outside from it.
It's in way west Soho, we'd go there after work and have a pint or 3.
Now the rivers edge is over a block away.
It's pretty fascinating to think of the changes taken place.

re: #82 Lucius Septimius
Even at the time of the Revolution, New York city didn't extend much beyond Wall Street. Haarlem (as it was still spelled) was a village up north aways. And the Bowery was just that -- a farm (that's what the Dutch word means).
During the Revolution Washington fought a running battle through the woods, farms, and swamps of Manhattan Island. Hard to believe that nowadays.
I reading the biography of Vanderbilt, I was amazed at the necessity for boats. We don't think of it today, but the only thing that really kept NY from growing was transportation. Vanderbilt addressed that.
Same with the Mississippi. Lots of formerly grand towns are nothing now. I am humbled when I realize how much people depended on the water for travel. I think of it as a barrier--needing to be bridged.

Good evening.
Feds: Stimulus money sent to 4,000 cons
One day after the Herald reported some surprised Bay State inmates - including murderers and rapists - were cashing in $250 stimulus checks, federal officials revealed the same behind-bars bonus was mailed to nearly 4,000 cons nationwide.A federal watchdog is now probing how the cons were cut the checks. The same cash also may have been sent to fugitive felons, people kicked out of the country and even individuals now deceased.
Just project this same performance onto your health care.

A lawyer boarded an airplane in New Orleans with a box of frozen crabs and asked a blonde stewardess to take care of them for him. She took the box and promised to put it in the crew's refrigerator. He advised her that he was holding her personally responsible for them staying frozen, mentioning in a very haughty manner that he was a lawyer, and proceeded to rant at her about what would happen if she let them thaw out. Needless to say, she was annoyed by his behaviour.
Shortly before landing in New York , she used the intercom to announce
to the entire cabin, "Would the gentleman who gave me the crabs in New Orleans , please raise your hand?"
Not one hand went up ... so she took them home and ate them.
Two lessons here:
1. Lawyers aren't as smart as they think they are.
2. Blondes aren't as dumb as most folks think.

re: #230 Erik The Red
A lawyer boarded an airplane in New Orleans with a box of frozen crabs and asked a blonde stewardess to take care of them for him. She took the box and promised to put it in the crew's refrigerator. He advised her that he was holding her personally responsible for them staying frozen, mentioning in a very haughty manner that he was a lawyer, and proceeded to rant at her about what would happen if she let them thaw out. Needless to say, she was annoyed by his behaviour.
Shortly before landing in New York , she used the intercom to announce
to the entire cabin, "Would the gentleman who gave me the crabs in New Orleans , please raise your hand?"Not one hand went up ... so she took them home and ate them.
Two lessons here:
1. Lawyers aren't as smart as they think they are.
2. Blondes aren't as dumb as most folks think.

Japanese, Koreans gain most from cash for clunkers
Japanese and South Korean automakers registered the biggest market share gains in the U.S. government's "cash for clunkers" program that ended this week with bankruptcy related inventory shortages hurting General Motors Co GM.UL and Chrysler.
Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) Honda Motor Co Ltd (7267.T), Nissan Motor Co Ltd (7201.T), Hyundai Motor Co (005380.KS) capitalized on the program's goal of pushing consumers away from gas guzzling sport utilities and pickups, to more efficient cars and trucks, preliminary sales figures showed on Wednesday.
Overseas manufacturers dominate in car sales, while U.S. companies have been stronger in the light truck segment. Cars outsold trucks 2-1 under the "clunker" initiative.
I'm sure they are very appreciative of the gifts from the current US taxpayers, our children, and our grandchildren.

Combination effect of the clunkers program plus durables goods inventories were run way low. Businesses cleaned out their storage and lived on that for a while, now are starting to re-order some of it back.

SECRET TO A LONG MARRIAGE
With a couple celebrating their 50th anniversary at the church's
marriage marathon, the minister asked Brother Ralph to take a few
minutes and share some insight into how he managed to live with the
same woman all these years.
The husband replied to the audience, "Well, I treated her with
respect, spent money on her, but mostly I took her travelling on
special occasions."
The minister inquired trips to where? "For our 25th anniversary, I
took her to Beijing , China ."
The minister then said, "What a terrific example you are to all
husbands, Ralph. Please tell the audience what you're going to do for
your wife on your 50th anniversary?"
Ralph: "I'm going to fetch her."

Now the Fed does not want to disclose lending details:
Federal Reserve Seeks Delay in Disclosure of Emergency Lending
The Federal Reserve asked a judge to delay enforcement of her decision requiring the central bank to identify companies in its emergency lending programs.
Chief U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska in Manhattan said on Aug. 24 that the Fed had until Aug. 31 to disclose daily reports on borrowing by banks and other financial institutions. The central bank wants Preska to stay her order, made in a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit, until the U.S. Court of Appeals in New York can act on an appeal that the Fed said it intends to file.
The Fed and U.S. banks would suffer irreparable harm if details of the loan programs were made public, according to the central bank’s senior counsel, Yvonne Mizusawa.
I disagree, I think the damage will be bigger by not disclosing this.

It would be pretty cool if they did the same thing for the city of San Francisco. The streams and lakes that were there would surprise a lot of people.

Dollar, Yen Gain as China Policy Concern Spurs Refuge Demand
The dollar advanced for a fourth day against the euro amid concern restrictions on Chinese production will stifle an economic recovery and as regional shares fell, sparking demand for safe-haven currencies.
The yen rose versus all of its 16 most-active counterparts as risk appetite waned before reports this week forecast to show Japan’s unemployment rate matched a record high and the U.S. economy contracted at a faster pace than initially projected. The Australian dollar sank for a third day against the greenback after crude oil fell, undermining demand for the currencies of commodity producers.

WHEN I SAY I AM BROKE...I AM BROKE!!
Yesterday I answered a knock on the door, only to be confronted by a
well-dressed young man carrying a vacuum cleaner.
'Good morning,' said the young man. 'If I could take a couple of
minutes of your time, I would like to demonstrate the very latest in
high-powered vacuum cleaners.'
'Go away!' I said. 'I haven't got any money!', 'I'm broke!' and
proceeded to close the door.
Quick as a flash, the young man wedged his foot in the door and pushed
wide open. 'Don't be too hasty!' he said. 'Not until you have at least
seen my demonstration.' And with that, he emptied a bucket of horse
manure onto my hallway carpet.
'If this vacuum cleaner does not remove all traces of this horse
manure from your carpet, Sir, I will personally eat the remainder.'
I stepped back and said, 'Well I hope you've got a fucking good
appetite, because they cut off my electricity this morning. What part
of 'broke' do you not understand?'

Here's a shock for the Democrats to ponder. People avoid taxes where ever possible:
Elle Macpherson Can’t Counter London Gloom as Americans Flee
Andrew Wesbecher moved to London from New York in 2006 to sell software to banks and hedge funds. This month he joined the exodus of American expatriates fleeing high taxes and the city’s shrinking financial industry.
“I’m the last guy to leave that I know,” said Wesbecher, 29, who worked for Tibco Software Inc. and lived in Notting Hill, the London neighborhood that’s home to billionaire Richard Branson and model Elle Macpherson. “We are all packing up.”
The number of U.S. citizens in Britain fell 3.8 percent to 126,000 in the 12months through September, according to the Office for National Statistics. The trend probably continued this year, with the Confederation of British Industry estimating the U.K. financial industry will lose about 45,000 jobs in the first nine months of 2009, or 4.3 percent of the total.
Americans are heading home as Britain plans a 50 percent tax rate for those who earn more than 150,000 pounds ($248,000) a year and employers cut benefits for workers living abroad, reducing the allure of London. That comes a year after the U.K. said foreigners who have lived in the country for more than seven years must pay 30,000 pounds annually or give up the special status that shields overseas income from British taxes.

Yeah. Huge chunks of SF are made out of fill put into the Bay, and it tends to go--slushy--when shaken.

I believe there was at least one running battle across the west tip of Long Island from south to north, as well, and one of the major engagements in that fight is now marked by a statue in a park in Queens IIRC.
McCullough's "1776" has some great descriptions of the battles in NY as well as the character of the place. NYC was an elitist, wrong-headed, contrarian sort of place right from the beginning! And the British fleet that showed up in NY harbor to fight Washington was the single largest expiditionary force the British sent out, EVER, for any reason. Imagine being a modern George Washington and seeing the equivalent of a dozen U.S. aircraft carrier groups appearing in your battlespace. Truly epic stuff.

When they built the new Kaiser building at Geary and Divisadero in San Francisco, they found all sorts of odds and ends. Pieces of it are on display in the building now. Chinese ceramics, doll's heads, medicine bottles, jewelry. Cool stuff.

What is up with "Life after People" and such like? Something kind of sick about fantasizing the demise of the human race, especilly when it is presented as such a pretty thing - witness video above.
You need to go read the book that started it all - "The World Without Us". It's not a nihilistic book at all, it attempts to answer a simple question: What effect do we REALLY have on the world? It's very enlightening, especially for somebody who grew up in the politically correct 90's. It covers both the past as well as the present and future, and from my POV it clarified a lot about what is environmentally damaging, vs. what isn't.
Some fun tidbits:
- Steven Spielberg's ending for "AI" with the towers of NYC still visible thousands of years from now is crap. Those buildings won't last 50 years because of all the water under Manhattan.
- Plastics won't be around forever. It'll probably take about a quarter of a million years before something learns to eat it.
- Those evil oil companies and their big toxic refineries will end up as a mere "smear of heavy metals" deep in the strata in future eons.
The truth is, on a geologic timescale, we will be gone someday and it's interesting to know what will remain and what won't.

Dylan = latter-day Jewish prophet, in the tradition of Ezra, from in and out, without a doubt, the scion of Zion, a fool for God, mocker of power, relater of tales, wanderer to the depths of the deepest dark forest, a seer, a holy man, a fraud, an uncomfortable foresightful fearful compatriot for all our travails; the first I ever heard the lyrical words of. /
It is a good "imagineering" of what a piece of the planet was like before modern humanity altered (spoiled?) it. The video recreations of the formations and deformations of the Earth's continents are also scientifically worthy. But I do not think that those videos hoped to rouse the audience to rue the passing of Pangea. This video does evoke a sense of longing for the pristine precisely because it recreates the forests and lakes of what was to become the concrete jungle of Manhattan.

"When I go home and look in the mirror, I like what I see. My family is there I have people I can talk to who are very supportive, in spite of everything and all the adversity and the hatred you face on a daily basis. But I'll be all right. I always have."

"I'm talking about hatred, period. I'm talking about when I go to eat at a restaurant. I've got to listen to the waiters badmouthing me at another table, sitting in a restaurant. That's what I'm talking about. Everything."
Hey Bradley, you are getting booed cause you suck and you are a club house cancer causing major problems for the team.

1. Keep track of the outs when you are in the field. On several occasions this season you lost track of the outs and tossed the ball away thinking hte inning was over, only to stand there like the overpaid schmuck you are as runner gleefully rounded the bases and scored.
2. Stop blaming the umpire when you take a fastball down the pipe for strike 3.
And then don't bump the umpire when you get thrown out for arguing about the call, thus getting suspended and encouraging the umpires to give every close call to the opposition for the rest of the season.
3. Try learning the strike zone. You swing at pitches in the dirt and then take pitches that split the strike zone in two.
4. Try running out a ground ball once in a while.
5. Try hitting behind the runner and moving him to scoring position once in a while. It's called "team ball", a term you are entirely unfamiliar with, I know.
6. Stop trying to crank every pitch out of the ball park. You are an absolute push over for the change up and the whole league knows it. Heck, my dogs know it.

No I haven't.
When people start implying entertainers/radio show hosts laying the groundwork for...whatever...I think we're getting off into goo-goo land.
I couldn't agree more.
It's actually rather disappointing to see the paranoia about TV hosts taking over some version of The Superfriends.

I am sure that's all correct and even interesting.
My objection to this navel gazing crap is that it all implies that humans are some sort of vermin scavenging this good earth. Did you see Bambi romping around hell's kitchen?
That may even be so, but it brings no joy to me, my kids or my grandkids to think so.
The implication is that if you love this planet then you should just get the hell out of the way. I am not in favor of this line of thinking, that is all.

Not at all, at least not in the book. Just the opposite, in fact.
The TV shows you mentioned were, honestly, just a way to employ 3D artists and kill some time with exaggerated drama. I watched them. They weren't nearly as interesting as the book, or the animations Charles linked - which, BTW, were probably put together by a small university's biology research group, the name of which I can't recall. I remember from the book that the group is basically one teacher and some grad students who are building biologically correct 3D models of historical NYC area, as far back as the data and records will take them, to understand what's going on there now. It's really cool stuff.
I do admit that I am the kind of guy to navel-gaze about what America looked like back before strip malls and congested highways. If you could go back and tell the first explorers what this place would become in 500 years' time, would they believe you? What a miserable shithole Florida must have been, who would believe that we would leave for the Moon from there? And then of course, supposedly the first guys who got out onto the central plains found grass that was as high as their horses... Incredible. It blows my mind, man...

What the heck happened to the cubbies, they started out strong this year?
Injuries, their catcher spent the winter smoking weed and eating himself out of shape, the signed Bradley who ruined the team chemistry, and they generally have under performed, especially the bull pen. They also had a lead off hitter for much of the year who I would not bat higher than 5th (Soriano)
Basically, they suck.

How is this video history?
It's a recreation of what an important urban area looked like some hundreds of years ago. It takes into account changes that have been made not only in terms of building up, but also building out, landfill. It shows what Henry Hudson SAW, what the world he sailed into actually looked like. It demonstrates the dramatic changes made in the area in a relatively short period of time, a city rising where no city had been. How is that not history?

Is paleontology pointless nostalgia? What if they went back further in time during the days of the dinosaurs, would that be different? Another motivation for this is the 400th anniversary of Hentry Hudson's 1609 voyage to the new world, hence the title "What Henry Hudson Saw."

When the postal authorities received the letter addressed to the Lord, USA, they decided to send it to President Obama. The President was so impressed, touched, and amused that he instructed his secretary to send the little boy a $5.00 bill, as this would appear to be a lot of money to a little boy. The little boy was delighted with the $5.00, and sat down to write a thank-you note to the Lord. It said: Dear Lord, Thank you very much for sending me the money. However, I noticed that for some reason you had to send it through Washington, DC and as usual, those jerks deducted $95.

I'm sitting here trying to think of a way to say, "I disagree" without being disagreeable. I think this sort of thing is interesting, and rather cool, and do not feel threatened by it. Clearly, your mileage varies on this one.
I would like to point out, however that there's a real difference between history, ie, what Manhattan used to look like, and 'earth without people'. There were people living in New York State before the city rose, the same people whose government gave us some of the principles of the U.S. Constitution. If that's pointless nostalgia, I'm OK with it. I like to know what came before.

How is it not obvious?

Glenn Beck used his popular Fox News show this afternoon to attack the background of Van Jones, a White House environmental advisor who co-founded an African American political advocacy group that organized an advertising boycott of his program.
During his 2 p.m. PDT show, Beck did not address the boycott spearheaded by Color of Change to protest the talk show host’s remark last month that he believes President Obama is “a racist.”
SNIP
Beck has gone after Jones in the past. On July 28, he called the activist a "self-professed communist" and questioned the role he was playing in the administration. His latest assault on Jones came as Color of Change announced that it has secured commitments from 36 companies who have pledged not to advertise on Beck’s popular program, including Wal-Mart and Sprint. However, some of the companies never had a presence on "Glenn Beck." Representatives of Procter & Gamble and AT&T – listed by Color of Change as companies that had signed onto the boycott – told The Times that their companies did not run spots on Beck’s program to begin with.

Absolutely we can and we should mock anything we see fit
We can't attack Beck for whipping up a Frenzy or for demonizing people, when we engage in similar behaviors for things that we don't like
If I make a comment like " Jenny McCarthy is putting Children's lives at risk for appearing on TV and convincing families to skip immunizations" I shouldn't be held responsible if some zealot reads my comment, and goes out and hurts her thinking he's saving Children in the process.
Glenn Beck isn't the boogeyman, any more than John Connor of the bohemian grove is, or ward Churchill or that guy who tried to arrest Dick Cheney in every city
Beck can't even muster enough support to keep his sponsors. The Free market will decide if his message is worth broadcasting on a major news network, of if he will be relegated to the lunatic airwaves like alex jones, etc

I say, mock Beck. Boycott beck. bash beck. I am not here to defend him.
My point is that he is a paranoid person, who I think tries to stir the pot to sell books and ad time. He isn't all powerful, which I get the sense a lot of people seem to believe.
and this to me is kind of the same paranoia that somebody pointed out above and was bashed for.

Apples and Wine
Women are like apple trees. The best ones are at the top of the tree. Most men don't want to reach for the good ones because they are afraid of falling and getting hurt. Instead, they sometimes take the apples from the ground that aren't as good, but easy. The apples at the top think something is wrong with them, when in reality they are amazing. They just have to wait for the right man to come along, the one who is brave enough to climb all the way up to reach them.
Now men . . . men are like a fine wine. They begin as grapes, and its up to women to stomp the shit out of them until they turn into something acceptable to have dinner with.

My mother married a hunter. One year they hung Dad's deer in the shed to "age." (You've probably never seen this, so I'll describe it. The legs are off, the skin is off, except for the head, which is still attached.)
She forgot it was there. She went out to take something out, early morning, in her bathrobe, and bumped into it.

If anyone is looking for a great activity for a Cub Scout meeting, the break-your-own geodes are perfect. The boys love pounding on things and watching to see what each boy "gets" in his geode.

Good evening, Lizrads!
I've been out of pocket earlier today, where, apparently, socks have appeared for the specific purpose of jamming the late Senator Kennedy up the patootie for the sole purpose of being banned. I'm a Texas Dem, so I come from it from a different direction, obviously.
God bless Teddy. A friend of mine, Bob Mann here in Austin, used to be his press flack. He describes Teddy as a functional drunk, a brilliant legislator, and a man who bent over backwards to make the deal. In addition, he had two brothers assassinated. I will throw this up on the board as a reminder of just how much he paid for a moment of personal weakness. This is probably the most brutal piece of political commentary of the 1970's, via the National Lampoon:

My mother married a hunter. One year they hung Dad's deer in the shed to "age." (You've probably never seen this, so I'll describe it. The legs are off, the skin is off, except for the head, which is still attached.)
She forgot it was there. She went out to take something out, early morning, in her bathrobe, and bumped into it.
Dad eats all the venison alone now.
Yeah, that might tend to turn one off the venison...

A man walked into a very high-tech bar. As he sat down on a stool he noticed that the bartender was a robot. The robot clicked to attention and asked, "Sir, what will you have?"
The man thought a moment then replied, "A martini please." The robot clicked a couple of times and mixed the best martini the man had ever had. The robot then asked, "Sir, what is your IQ?" The man answered "oh, about 164." The robot then proceeded to discuss the 'theory of relativity', 'inter-steller space travel', 'the latest medical break throughs', etc...
The man was most impressed. He left the bar but thought he would try a different tact.. He returned and took a seat. Again the robot clicked and asked what he would have? "A Martini please." Again it was superb. The robot again asked "what is your IQ sir?" This time the man answered, "Oh about 100". So the robot started discussing NASCAR racing, the latest basketball scores, and what to expect the Dodgers to do this weekend.
The guy thought this was fun and he had to try it one more time. So he left, returned and took a stool... Again a martini, and the question, "What is your IQ?"?? This time the man drawled out "Uh... bout 50".
The robot clicked then leaned close and very slowly asked, "A-r-e y-o-u p-e-o-p-l-e s-t-i-l-l h-a-p-p-y w-i-t-h O-B-A-M-A?

The Palestinian Authority's chief Islamic judge, Sheikh Tayseer Rajab Tamimi, said on Wednesday that there was no evidence to back up claims that Jews had ever lived in Jerusalem or that the Temple ever existed.
Tamimi's announcement came in response to statements made earlier this week by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who said that Jerusalem "is not a settlement," and that "the Jews built it 3,000 years ago."
"Netanyahu's claims are baseless and untrue," said Tamimi, the highest religious authority in the PA. "Jerusalem is an Arab and Islamic city and it always has been so."

It was sad to watch. Some people are so blinded by ideology that they can no longer appreciate the other side's humanity.
Absolutely! You and I would probably disagree on many points of discourse, but on other things, we would trade tips.
A public option on health care? You are nay and I am yea. A proper weapon for home defense? We would probably agree that a 12-gauge pump with 2-shot is appropriate.
A complete overhaul of tort costs as part of an expansion of the existing public options in health care? I am right there with you.
It is that common ground that we need to explore without SCREAMING AT THE TOP OF OUR LUNGS.
And thank you for your consideration. I appreciate it. Anything that takes the temperature down on this board is a good thing.

Soba is easy: I'll give you a freebee...
Use dried Soba noodles
Or make your own (mix about 1 cup of buckwheat flour, 1/2 cup of white flour, 1 teaspoon salt. add water and knead until you have a firm dough. Feed through one of those hand cranked pasta machines and cut with the spaghetti attachment.)
boil noodles for 2 minutes (they cook quick)
strain noodles and rinse with water until the noodles become room temp.
toss noodles in a bowl with a little bit of soy sauce, wasabi (optional) sliced green onion, and a few thin slices of pork.
It's also really good with mussels or rare grilled tuna.

The FEMA camps are all part of the De-Urbanization Process. Once they control radio through the FCC and the Sekrit-FCC-Czar and HR 3200 passes they'll be able to pacify the citizens into going to the Death-Panels to be liquefied. The radio station will be called Air-America. Liquefaction for the de-urbanization process will take place at the FEMA camps. Once finished we can return the urban landscape to its original state as it was in 1609.
At least that's what I heard on the Glenn Beck show.

An 86-year-old man went to his doctor for his quarterly check-up...
The doctor asked him how he was feeling, and the 86-year-old said, 'Things are great and I've never felt better.' I now have a 20 year-old bride who is pregnant with my child. "So what do you think about that then Doc ?"
The doctor considered his question for a minute and then began to tell a story. "I have an older friend , much like you, who is an avid hunter and never misses a season." One day he was setting off to go hunting. In a bit of a hurry , he accidentally picked up his walking cane instead of his gun."
"As he neared a lake , he came across a very large male beaver sitting at the water's edge. He realized he'd left his gun at home and so he couldn't shoot the magnificent creature... Out of habit he raised his cane , aimed it at the animal as if it were his favorite hunting rifle and went 'bang, bang'." "Miraculously , two shots rang out and the beaver fell over dead.
Now, what do you think of that ?" asked the doctor.
The 86-year-old said , "Logic would strongly suggest that somebody else pumped a couple of rounds into that beaver."

/well, I guess that settles that
Now I really do have to write a small rant about this one. Yes this is untrue. Yes every educated person knows it is untrue. Certainly anyone who has ever read a bible knows it is untrue.
However... How insulting can you get? Is this evil revisionism just another narrative... I am waiting for some person in the Obama circle to grease this garbage in such a frame.
Let me put this very seriously.
Jerusalem is the capital city and spiritual center of my people. It was consecrated by our G-d and our kings millennia before Mohammed ever lived. It is the City of David my ancestor. It is ours. We are home. We are not leaving.
We did not shed our blood and two thousand years of tears and prayers to give it over to the likes of Abbas or anyone else.
What would anyone say to someone who built a lie again and again that America had no claim to Washington? And let us be fair. What is Washington to America in comparison to what Jerusalem means to the Jewish people? Washington is a secular capital. It is not a spiritual center.
I know for certain that if some barbarians were trying to take Washington, I would see it as my duty to meet them with a rifle as it is. HOw much more so Jerusalem?
NO, I see things like that and I know in my bones that the P.A. does not want peace. Such a statement is the deepest declaration of war.
I do not want endless war with the Arabs, but, if they force it into the hands of my people, I know who is right, and I know who I pray wins.
I also know that it is not for the Arabs to take Jerusalem away. But that is a matter of faith.

Mother Earth who sustains and governs us,
producing varied fruits with coloured flowers and herbs.
Praised be You my Lord through those who grant pardon
for love of You and bear sickness and trial.
Blessed are those who endure in peace,
By You Most High, they will be crowned.Praised be You, my Lord through Sister Death,
from whom no-one living can escape.
Woe to those who die in mortal sin!
Blessed are they She finds doing Your Will.

There is an old arch that used to lead up to the Temple. During the late Roman period, it was used as a small synagogue.
It is about 150 meters from that Mosque.
The Palis of course rioted when it was excavated, just the archway leading up to the side of the Temple. It was a little place where Jews could try to stay close to what was lost. It had all manner of artifacts.
The Israeli government of course demurred to the Palis. They did not want things getting out of hand. The Palis walled up the arch from above and pumped sewage into it. You can see their little stucco job and know that a portion of the Temple, that was once used as a synagogue, is now an Arab septic tank.

absolutely --but not just Christian, there's Greek/Roman myth's bound up in there, along with other literature that I haven't read. Most of it is stuff that, like Paradise Lost, could be a college semester all in themselves.

Silmarillion is in many ways in my humble opinion Tolkien's masterwork. What is more tempting than power? Beauty.
Tolkien was a very devout fellow and great friends with C.S. Lewis. Silmarillion is inn some sense Tolkien's theology mixed in wih his world building, but it is much more meant to be the root of his legend. The core legend of Middle Earth. Numenor is his take on both Atlantis and Jerusalem.
The Elves (Jews) strayed from G-d but were still loved and paved the way for men (pagans) who became steeped in their lore and founded Numenor (Christians). Morgoth (Satan) is banished to the outer darkness, but the spirit of evil is still strong in the world and takes on rather than a fully spiritual corruption (defiling divine beauty, through the destruction of the two trees and the theft of the Silmarils) to a more worldly and secular evil as shown by the ring and Sauron.
One could go on and on about this.

Quite Concur. Islam demands pride of place for itself, and its followers typically resort to violence if they are not given it. The only answer to that is to refuse such demands to grant Islam such special status and then hammer those who attack you for so doing.

Tolkien's version of Creation --was one of the most beautiful things I've ever read. Like Paradise Lost, I read while listening to the Silmarillion. The excellent narration helps trememdously. I do see the similarities with Milton in how Tolkien describes the angels (elves) and the rift between them. The same with the description of the "orbs" of night and day. I had to take detailed notes to get thru the Silmarillion, but of course, I can't remember the specifics without them. I wonder at Milton's description of Death's ravenous hunger and the Shelob (sp?) spider. Right now, as if yoiu can't tell) my mind is sparking with random thoughts.

"That Hideous Strength" will be a test of sanity!
The title comes from a 1554 work written by Scottish poet Sir David Lyndsaay, “Ane Dialog betwixt Experience and ane Courteor,” better known as “The Monarchie.”
The full quote reads:
"The shadow of that hideous strength
Sax mile and more it is of length"
referring to the Tower of Babel...

I have a feeling that there are more than a few rank-and-file Muslims are are respectful as well.

Made damn sure Illuvatar washed his hands and sealed their fate.
I Stuck around Belariand
When I saw it was time for a change.
Killed the elves and their ministers
Gondolin screamed in pain
I lurked in Orthanc
Held a general's rank
when the Dagor raged
and the bodies stank!
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But what's troubling you
Is the nature of my game
Please allow me to introduce myself

Amen. I've known many respectful Muslims who don't reflect at all what we see from the political "leadership". There's a war for what it means to be Muslim, just as there have been (and still are) wars over what it means to be Christian and Jewish. I believe strongly in my own convictions. That's why I'm a Christian. But I just as strongly believe that we need to defend our respective faiths from a standpoint of respecting every individuals' right to conscience. And that's an area that modern Christianity and modern Judaism are definitely stronger than modern, fundamentalist, Islam. An aspect of modernism gave rise to the "fundamentalist" movement that is not actually rooted to the faith they profess. But, bed beckons! G'nite all!

The thing about Tolkien is he had it all under control, from start to finish. And language. My only complaint about Tolkien is that his dialogue can be a touch stilted in the trilogy and I am not certain that Tom Bombadil adds to the flow of the story... However, in Silmarilion his language is perfect. Everything oozes of a certain age old feeling of gravitas.

Indeed. The Elves pay a high price for that though. Morgoth and Sauron relentlessly seek to enslave or exterminate them and both come close to success. It's also interesting to note the Tolkien, who lived and wrote during the World Wars, has no race simply going it alone. Elves, Men, Hobbits, all need help at one point or the other.

Glamdring is the sword of King Turgon of Gondolin. It is worth noting here that The Fall of Gondolin was the very first story Tolkien wrote set in the LotR universe. It was first written in 1917. So in a very real way, Glamding is a way for Tolkien to link LotR to his first story in that universe.

Absolutely.
Also the Elves are never exactly Jewish and the Men of Numenor are never exactly Christian. In the context of the Wars and geopolitics, the Elves are the Brits and the men of Numenor are the Americans. The British empire is fading - but the state it nurtured is starting a new age.

Neither. The French don't really figure in. Given the wars France and England fought against each other, it would be tough to fit an believable analogue of France in.
I was making a joke and you are being both serious and correct.

OK serious question.. where did the nerd meme that Dwarves are Scottish come from?
I really don't know.
The facct that they live in the mountains and largely keep to themselves. Scots Highlanders are sometimes thought to have been that way before England became heavily involved in Scottish affairs.

Could well be.
The Elves as Jews meme mixed with my sleepiness. I just had an image of Elrond and Galadriel having tea and rugeleh :)
Celibrimbor brings the bagels.
The Noldor play canasta...
And now getting serious again, Turgon is David.

In some ways yes, in others not. David died in bed with his kingdom relatively secure. Turgon is killed and Gondolin destroyed. Though it is true that Earendil, Elrond and Aragorn are all direct descendants of Turgon.

I wonder how many people really think it was "better" after we arrived.
The Indians didn't know how to make a decent corned beef sandwich.

Wot? Was a Jewish city up through 70AD, too.
It was a Jewish city, but only in its Golden Age (1100? - ~ 600 B.C.) did it maintain political autonomy. And then briefly in the 3rd century during the Macabees, but still.
