He should not be railroaded out of office, but rather secretly whisked away leaving his staff wondering where exactly the governor is.

2 CIA Reject  Thu, Aug 27, 2009 9:34:43am

He won't be "railroaded" out of office?

What is this guy a Democrat all of a sudden?

6 Mostly sane, most of the time.  Thu, Aug 27, 2009 9:36:14am

He doesn't seem to grasp the idea of responsibilities: to his children, his wife, the state of South Carolina.

These are all responsibilities that he signed up for, and that he has bailed on when he wanted something else.

He needs to step aside and let someone more reliable take over--at least for the state. The boys are stuck with him.

OK, "Railroaded" is out.

Let's just use the traditional crosstie, tar, and feathers.

13 Kosh's Shadow  Thu, Aug 27, 2009 9:38:00am

What's the problem with being railroaded? Since he's not on the Acela, by the time Amtrak shows up, he'll be out of office anyway.

Lt. Gov. Bauer had troubles of his own
He had a Cheatin' Governor which wouldn't leave its home;
He tried and he tried to get the Gov to bail,
He sent him on a hike on the Appalacian trail.

But the Gov came back the very next day,
The Gov came back, after flying to his lover;
But the Gov came back; he just couldn't stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea!

What, no railroads up in Appalachia?

Just coal railroads.

BTW, saw Extreme Trains on a coal train. The cars have couplers that allow the car to rotate. To empty the train, they move it so a car is in a special device that turns the entire car upside down and dumps the coal out. The rotating couplers keep it connected. Then they turn it right side up, and move the train to bring the next car in place for dumping.

I frankly see no comparison here with Sarah Palin, who, despite her many faults (let's stone her!), was being nuisance-lawsuited to potential financial ruin by her political enemies.

That tactic appears to be just fine, as long as it's used against her.

So let's get the same type of high-minded Dem to sue this guy (as long as he has to defend himself out of his own pockets) and ruin him. Would that be OK?

44 ladycatnip  Thu, Aug 27, 2009 9:44:09am

What is this guy a Democrat all of a sudden?

Exactly what I was thinking when I watched the video. That strategy just isn't working for him - instead Sanford comes across as a pathetic figure rather than an outraged, indignant victim of a massive conspiracy to oust him.

Dems are masters of that tactic, republicans not.

Well we now know where Democrats put all that stimulus money - they built a National Time Machine and set it to 9/10/2001.

Madeline Albright calls Lockerbie bombing "a terrible accident"

I guess it was - had the bomb gone off as intended (and not accidentally prematurely) then people might have thought the thing just crashed and the US would have been off the hook for getting on Lybia's ass for terrorism.

If Republicans really wanted to save this country (and the world economy for that matter) from a bunch of ignorant leftist ideologues then it might try to dump its own ideologues.

You know - the ones who want to tell you how to live a moral life and then go about not doing it themselves. Dump the social conservative agenda (which still dominates all strategies about motivating the "base"). Dump the nutjob creationism (and exorcisms).

Embrace security, liberty and fiscal conservatism. Less government. More freedom. Let Americans create wealth and the world will be richer and freer.

The "R" after the names should be promoted as "Rational" rather than "Religious".

Well the Dems seem to be doing a good job for the GOP on the fiscal end of things: Obama's $9 Trillion dollar increase in the debt, let alone his projected BUDGETED 1.8 Trillion dollar deficit for this year's budget (which, as someone pointed out yesterday out here is greater than Bush ran up in four years) has some folks (see my spin off link) wanting a government that provides LESS service and Taxes 'em less as well!

Every cop knows that you don't mess with elected officials that can cause trouble for the Department, and a Lt. Gov. can cause a lot of trouble.

I was on a ride along with a Sheriff's Deputy friend of mine in San Diego one night and we pulled over an LA City councilmember doing about 95 on I-5 at 2AM. She got off with a warning, but my friend mentioned that giving a ticket was not worth the pissing match with LA that it would start.

What Sanford said (what did he say?)

"I want to, because if I do, when I was done, by the way, did you see, when I didn't do, only 16 months, but then again, I can't say, on the railroad... sure!"

That wasn't stream of conscience, that was stream of stupid.

Speaking of health care, don't forget that Michelle Bachmann is holding a "town hall" meeting on health care this afternoon. I can't wait to see the video clips. My belief that most human beings are rational beings has started to resurrect itself lately. So it's about time for it to get pummeled into nonexistence again.

And by the way, what's with the story from the local Minnesota Fox News affiliate that I linked to? It's just a quick announcement of Bachmann's town hall meeting. And yet more than half of it is a random, un-introduced, non-sequitur litany of Obama's talking points. Doesn't it seem a little weird that Fox 9 has hired as its content writer some addled moonbat who's incapable of even mentioning Michelle Bachmann's name, without a spasmodic eruption of leftyspeak?

I didn't know there was such a place besides us. Will we have a private option or will we be like Canada? Oops, didn't mean to criticize the President, forget I said anything.

So we are to have a French health-care system without a French tradition of political protest. It is odd that American liberalism, in a veritable state of insurrection during the Bush presidency, now seeks political quiescence. These "townhallers" who have come forth to challenge ObamaCare have been labeled "evil-mongers" (Harry Reid), "un-American" (Nancy Pelosi), agitators and rowdies and worse.

The Lockerbie Bomber Oil connection gains strength...

MSPs cast doubt on Lockerbie bomber’s medical papers

LABOUR and Tory MSPs have questioned whether freed Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset al Megrahi has three months or less to live.

They have turned their focus to medical papers released by the Scottish Government.

The medical papers said specialists believed Lockerbie bomber Megrahi might only survive months, but did not say whether it would be more or less than three months.

The report said another medical expert who had seen Megrahi considered his condition declined “significantly” in the week to August 3.

But Labour MSP Dr Richard Simpson, who specialised in prostate disease research, said Lockerbie bomber Megrahi may live for “far longer” than three months.

Dr Simpson said: “Kenny MacAskill released him apparently on the advice of just one doctor whose status is not clear and who is not named.”

Sanford should resign not because of the philandering, but because he used government money and did so when he should have been attending to state business.

He's got to go, and the state GOP should do what it can to make that happen.

Of course, it's not like the Democrats don't have similar issues. They've turned the DC swamp into a swimming pool of corruption, led by none other than Charlie Rangel (D-NY), whose tax cheating ways now includes stiffing NJ out of property taxes for years and underreporting hundreds of thousands in income. Oh, and he's the guy who sets tax policy in the US heading Ways and Means.

From the article:

“Bauer is a runoff winner. I know,” said state Sen. David Thomas, R-Greenville, who ran for lieutenant governor in 2002, losing to Bauer in a runoff. “They don’t want him to have a leg up.”

Thomas predicted Bauer’s offer will force House lawmakers to move.

Bauer’s offer also gives him time to achieve some goals as governor and reappear politically later.

“(Bauer) is 40. He comes back at 44, 48 and takes a shot at whatever (office) interests him,” said Thomas, who chairs a Senate subcommittee investigating whether Sanford broke state regulations, including using state aircraft for political reasons and failing to report private plane rides from friends.

Would that be criminal misconduct?

re: #170 LudwigVanQuixote

Seriously, this is one of those ones where I don't understand the politicians or the people.

If he had just had an affair and did a mea culpa, I think this would have likely gone away. But having an affair while AWOL - and having allegations of it being on the government dime... I just don't get it.

People push the self destruct button for many reasons, but if he were truly doing that, why not resign?

It just makes no sense.

I suppose that Charles' assertion that Sanford honestly believes that he is subject to different rules. It's a good thing that megalomania like this got caught before he reached any higher office.

I don't see why (echoing Sharm up thread) the legislature doesn't toss his ass for dereliction of duty. He was AWOL, unreachable and did not hand over signature authority during his absence.

re: #177 lawhawk

Sanford should resign not because of the philandering, but because he used government money and did so when he should have been attending to state business.

He's got to go, and the state GOP should do what it can to make that happen.

Of course, it's not like the Democrats don't have similar issues. They've turned the DC swamp into a swimming pool of corruption, led by none other than Charlie Rangel (D-NY), whose tax cheating ways now includes stiffing NJ out of property taxes for years and underreporting hundreds of thousands in income. Oh, and he's the guy who sets tax policy in the US heading Ways and Means.

He just has a different way of figuring tax policy for everyone else as compared to himself.

You get no argument from me about ousting corrupt Dems. However, since they (the Dems) don't make it a point to present themselves as people of great religious conviction at every opportunity, the philandering is a special whammy for the GOP.

In fact it is a double whammy.

The average American does not give a damn about the intricacies of policy. They do however get the notion of a hypocrite with his johnson someplace it shouldn't be.

Hypocrisy? You want hypocrisy? Rangel is in charge of the committee that sets tax policy for the nation. He is responsible for writing the tax code, and yet he's a tax cheat and has engaged in rampant tax evasion for years on end.

If it were anyone else, he'd be suffering the pains of IRS audit after audit. In fact, criminal charges might be called upon given that he's purposefully engaged in underreporting his tax obligations. It was wilful failure.

That's hypocrisy with a bow on top.

I think he really feels guilty for what he did. He still doesn't want to have to give anything up because of it, though. Yet, he still feels that guilt, and it's telling him he should suffer.

That's why we're getting the weird, conflicting, nonsensical statements. He's got two irreconcilable ideas in his head, and they're having a turf war. (I'll bet he's also got a turf war going on in there about Jenny vs. Hot Mama in Argentina.)

Certain Democrats don't have this problem. They only have the part about getting off without consequences.

MSPs cast doubt on Lockerbie bomber’s medical papers

I saw the man at his victory celebration in Libya. He really did not look a man who's about to die from prostate cancer. Not by a longshot.

But this doesn't necessarily strengthen the oil conspiracy theory. There's also, for example, the theory that he was released because he was about to begin his appeal hearing, which would have brought to light major, embarrassing flaws in the case that was originally presented against him.

There's also Alex Jones' theory that the CIA and Mossad actually shot down Pan Am Flight 103, in order to cover up their illegal heroin ring that they used to finance the 9/11 attacks.

Peace! I have no desire to see Rangel get off the hook.

I am saying though that this is the kind of thing which does not seel papers and make newscasts the way an awol politician having an affair would - particularly one who likes to preach his Christianity.

The average American does not care about "everyday" corruption when he can fixate on a "preacher put his privates somewhere story." My point is that Republicans should be very aware of this by now, and yet we have a seemingly endless stream of Republicans whose careers are built on public Christianity, and yet can't seem to police their peckers.

Dear Mr. Beaumont,

I encountered a malfunction in the Spinoff Links. When I'm looking at a link not in the list, but on its own page (accessed through the Spy, or by clicking on the comments for that link) the ratings don't work. The + and - buttons do nothing, and clicking on the rating number takes you to the front page. Ratings work fine when looking at a list of links.

Thanks for your time!

Mark Sanford may not be an admirable person, but he has demonstrated himself to be a student of history. He is simply following the Clinton Template. He knows that all he has to do is ride out the bad publicity; the legislature is powerless to remove him.

He needs to have his sorry ass run out on rails, his bags thrown out the door after him, and be shunned 3000% by the entire Republican body. The GOP doesn't NEED sneaky, lying, irresponsible, philandering assholes like him. No one does.

His last known whereabouts should be a well-attended pity party with every other lying, sneaky, philandering, irresponsible, can't keep his pants zipped POS, but certainly not in the governor's mansion.

This type of BS is exactly why so many people are sick and tired of the "government", it is made up of people who think there are absolutely no consequences for their actions. Consequences are only for the "little people" the peasants, the chattering class. It is time to rid ourselves of the whole lot of them. Give em the boot. Career politicians need to be a thing of the past. I just wish I didn't have to wait until 2010 to begin the purge.

Why should he leave office? Wasn't there a senator whose girlfriend drowned in a car accident? Wasn't he supposedly involved with heavy drinking when it happened? Wasn't another government goon given grief for his boyfriend running a male prostitution ring from the first floor of their residence?

At least this governor's girlfriend is still alive. Why should a conservative be forced from office for doing something a liberal has no problems in doing? Do we have one set of standards for conservatives and another set for liberals? Are there no standards of behavior and morality on the part of government officials? Either the standards apply equally across the board or we drop them for everyone.
