No, I'm not Charles, nor do I play him on the internet.

But there are two questions here. Can you run OSX (Leopard) on a PC?

Answer: Yes. "Run Mac OS X on a PC." But you probably don't want to - it involves installing a so-called emulator which lets you run OSX within a shell program. Kind of like running your car engine inside another engine. Buggy, a pain, and frowned upon. There may even be legal issues, I'm not sure.

Can you develop iPhone apps on a PC under Windoze? Answer: Yes. How to develop iPhone applications on a windows PC. But similar caveats apply.

The advice on one of those sites is to get a cheap Mac Mini and work from that. By the time your son works out all the kinks in trying to do it in PC-land, the time-cost alone will outweigh the price of the Mini. And if he wants to go on in computer science, having Mac experience will not hurt.

Consulate of Panama in Houston says:

Any foreign or Panamanian national may register a vessel in the Panamanian Merchant Marine. International service vessels are exempt from Panama income tax. Shipowners take advantage of the flexibility of Panamanian offshore corporations by having such entity appear as owner of the vessel. Any ship may be registered provided it complies with the minimum seaworthiness, safety and environmental conditions required by international conventions. However, ships over 20 years old are subject to a special inspection before being granted a statutory certificate of registry.[Link: www.conpahouston.com...]

The sinking tanker may be the Elli:

The only tanker with the same name in shipping databases is the 94,300-dwt products tanker Elli (built 1986), but the Reuters report indicates the sunken vessel has a capacity of 59,000 tonnes.

Although the Elli is still listed on the website of Greece's Liquimar Tankers, TradeWinds has reported that the ship was purchased by compatriot Worldwide Green Tankers in December 2007.

LONDON (Reuters) - A 17-year-old Briton became the youngest person to sail round the globe single-handed on Thursday after nine months at sea.

Mike Perham suffered knockdowns and damage to his yacht during the 24,000-mile (38,700-km) trip and the teenager from Hertfordshire, southern England, said he was now looking forward to a "good meal and a very good night's sleep."

Fewer than 250 people have sailed solo around the globe, but his record is already in jeopardy if a 13-year-old Dutch girl persuades a court to allow her to set sail.

re: #57 Bobblehead

Essay by Gen. Russel Honore.

Work Is A Blessing

I grew up in Lakeland, La., one of 12 children. We all lived on my parents' subsistence farm. We grew cotton, sugar cane, corn, hogs, chickens and had a large garden, but it didn't bring in much cash. So when I was 12, I got a part-time job on a dairy farm down the road, helping to milk cows. We milked 65 cows at 5 in the morning and again at 2 in afternoon, seven days a week.

In the kitchen one Saturday before daylight, I remember complaining to my father and grandfather about having to go milk those cows. My father said, "Ya know, boy, to work is a blessing."

I looked at those two men who'd worked harder than I ever had — my father eking out a living on that farm and my grandfather farming and working as a carpenter during the Depression. I had a feeling I had been told something really important, but it took many years before it sank in.

'Arctic Sea' was carrying illegal arms, says general

A general close to the investigation into the mysterious voyage of the Arctic Sea has told a Russian newspaper that he suspected the ship was carrying a secret cargo of illegal weapons, as many conspiracy theorists have suggested.

The newspaper, Komsomolskaya Pravda, interviewed what it described as a senior general in the Russian Navy who had been close to the investigation. The general said that he knew far more than he could say openly at this stage, but his testimony, if genuine, represents the first concrete information to come out of the investigation, which has been shrouded in mystery.

He said the theory that the ship might have been carrying drugs was excluded from the beginning, but that the investigation had focussed on a possible weapons shipment, in particular S-300 or X-55 missiles bound for Iran, and sold by a "weapons mafia" involving top Russian officials but operating outside of the law.

I think he's the "Don't get stuck on stupid" general.

He is indeed. If the GOP is smart, they'll support him and sent David Vitter out to pasture. Given the gratitude Honore commands in the Crescent City, he would be unbeatable in a general election. He would also give Republicans a prominent African-American in Congress, which would also be helpful. Honore all the way!

It's the kind of Nanny-state nonsense that could happen here if we're not careful.

Personally, I think the parents are nuts. A child that young is not as strong--physically and mentally--as a 17-year-old child and could be subjected to all kinds of predators out there. However, I don't know the details of her projected trip--perhaps she will be shadowed closely by those who can protect her from assholes.

Seriously though, if in fact it indicates the parents are nuts, is this an example of the European Nanny State or a sensible decision made by child services?

Really? The young girl, though closely trailed by adults in a trailing boat, will be in danger. Grant you that.

How do you feel about sports? My oldest daughter was in gymnastics at a very high level, a young girl could miss a dismount or take a fall on the high beam and break her neck. Perhaps the State should step in and put a stop to such reckless nonsense, the parents are culpable obviously. Should social services take charge of these irresponsible gym meets?

I don't think CPS would have had grounds to do so before the flight. To all appearances it was safe - she had the flight instructor and her dad with her. As I remember, one of the adults made the decision that she should take off in fog in order to keep to her timetable. I think the whole "world's youngest" nonsense can lead everyone involved to make poor decisions that could endanger the child and others.

If anyone remembers this story and can google it, I'd appreciate it. I can't remember any of the names involved.

If being trailed by adults then that is a different situation, my opinion was based on her being alone at sea and at the mercy of criminals.

As far as sports, that is a different concern, but there too it is reasonable for the
state to enforce reasonable safety practices when children are involved.

It's that and the video Thanos posted that give me the opinion that the AR-15 protestor should be sectioned.

Right! If Killgore "hijacks" a thread we should dog pile him, but if others do it, that's perfectly acceptable. The double standard really annoys me.

Czars are essentially presidential advisers. They cannot create law, they can only advise. Also, I've noticed that a lot of cabinet people are being mis-identified as czars.

Beck has lost his mind. He's demanding the president tell us about national threats so we can help protect the nation. How was Bush supposed to know about 9/11 and how is Obama supposed to know about any other similar attack? And how is revealing such information going to help- or would it create a panic instead?

He's nuts!

On Czars and Cabinet secretaries:
Cabinet: Agriculture, Commerce, Defense, Education, Energy, Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, Housing and Urban Development, Interior, Labor, State, Transportation, Treasury, Veterans Affairs, Attorney General.

There are some issues the Executive branch wants special attention on, and doesn't want to wait for Senate confirmation before they begin working.
That's currently the option of the Executive. President Obama isn't making the personnel choices that conservatives would make, but that shouldn't be surprising.

They don't just want to not read them - that's something they can easily achieve themselves through the simple exercise of their own free choice. They want them to shut up. They clearly want to be posting in a site where there is little or no possibility of being presented with certain contrary views at all. Again, this is actually something that is easily achieved by them through the simple exercise of their own free choice.

(cough) Hot Air (cough) Ace of Spades (cough) Free Republic.

Exactly. And I think it also ties in to the earlier point I made (and SFZ as well) about powerlessness and (I said) the right's inability at the moment to take personal responsibility and look at their party. They want to blame everyone but themselves, and reflexively resent and hate any criticism of the right. It can be seen right on this site, too -- the people who want to immediately deflect any perceived criticism and turn it into "yeah well let's talk about how horrible the left is" or "the left did worse!"

It leads to ridiculous positions like defending armed people showing up at townhalls-- because some lefty 6 years ago wore a mean Tshirt.

Note: this is a problem for any party that is out of power and angry. The left did it too, for years. Point is, they didn't start winning elections til they quit that-- and the same holds true for the right today.

Oh, yeah, it's nearly identical in large pieces. Just last year, I was arguing with people who said that Bush would establish a military dictatorship and refuse to leave office. Remember, all these people, regardless of how they vote, are drawing on the same bank of all-American fears and prejudices and craziness. This is the just really dark, whacko side of our political culture.

True. While listening to Beck I was struck by the similarities to the leftist memes of the during the previous administration. Even the word he used "thugocracy" is straight out of Indymedia and DU.

re: #390 iceweasel

I agree, and would add that there is also far too much bs flying around about how only right wing protesters ever get arrested at demos whereas lefties are allowed to do as they please etc.

Another instant classic from the HuffPo Files!

[Link: www.huffingtonpost.com...]

Excerpt:

We don't know how much Kennedy was affected by her death, or what she'd have thought about arguably being a catalyst for the most successful Senate career in history. What we don't know, as always, could fill a Metrodome.

Still, ignorance doesn't preclude a right to wonder. So it doesn't automatically make someone (aka, me) a Limbaugh-loving, aerial-wolf-hunting NRA troll for asking what Mary Jo Kopechne would have had to say about Ted's death, and what she'd have thought of the life and career that are being (rightfully) heralded.

Who knows -- maybe she'd feel it was worth it.

Discovery in Orbit, Chasing Space Station
Sat, 29 Aug 2009 12:18:13 AM EDT

With seven astronauts and a host of experiments and equipment on board, space shuttle Discovery completed a flawless ascent into orbit Friday night to begin a two-day chase of the International Space Station. With Commander Rick "C.J. " Sturckow at the controls, the shuttle lifted off on-time at 11:59 p.m. EDT from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The crew will rendezvous and dock with the station Sunday and the crew will begin transferring equipment to the outpost during the 13-day mission.

After flying up on Discovery, Nicole Stott will trade places with station resident Tim Kopra, who went into space last month aboard Endeavour. Equipment and science racks for the orbiting laboratory are riding inside the Leonardo cargo module which is secured tightly inside Discovery's payload bay. The module will be lifted out of Discovery and locked onto the station so the crew can transfer the gear efficiently. The treadmill named for comedian Stephen Colbert is also aboard Discovery and destined for the station.

Probable location, one week later, of actual person referred to in this article: on front page of National Review Online, referenced with word “hero” or “patriot”

I snark, but not entirely. I hope people will check out those links I gave.

Disgusting.
That's right-she would have been glad to die trapped in a car as the air ran out.

Yep. Blame NASA's long-planned decommissioning of the shuttles for all kinds of reasons, including decrepitude and obsolescence, on Obama.

What exactly was Bush's space program?

He initiated the quest for the mission to Mars? The plan and work that has been laid out and advanced for development of a new launch vehicle with moon basing as a step stone to worlds beyond? You know, the one that Obama just deemed too expensive and is slated for defunding? The one that puts us aboard Russian launch vehicles for the foreseeable future? The one that could interfere with social reprogramming? Is that what your asking?

Unless you see scheduled decommissioning of the shuttle as the predestined end of America's space program of course, which I guess you and Obama do.

I cried at the thought of Nabby's operation and cancer. An 18th century mastectomy without anesthesia...cringe worthy.

What people went through...a hard time in so many ways. My husband had to leave the room for that scene of the miniseries.

I was struck by how much John and Abigail loved one another, and how much their work took them apart from each other. A blessing that they lived to old age, so that they could be together for that time.

I think I like the Adamses so much because in lifestyle and outlook they're the most familiar to me of the key figures of that time. They really were just middle-class New Englanders who were willing to go to great lengths for their country. Great people, without Virginia mansions or trading empires to fall back on. And that extraordinary marriage.

You should pick up "The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors". Just a remarkable story of selfless bravery.

re: #550 realwest

I'll have to give that one some thought and get back to you. Seems to me that MOST books about TJ were either written to defend his ownership of slaves or to condemn him for his ownership of slaves and of course whichever course the author(s) took, was - excuse the expression - colored - by their POV on that issue.
But there are some out there - some which deal almost exculsively with his Presidency - but there are a couple of decent, over-all views of TJ, but alas I've taken my meds and the HD between my ears is suffering a serious overload right now!

Jefferson's views and actions of slavery are pretty interesting, and from my standpoint, almost impossible to understand. (Not sure he understood them either.)

One thing I found very interesting while reading the Ellis book is that the author points out that he wrote the book before the genetic testing of the Hemings descendents was done, and then revised it for a later edition. He said it was an odd experience, since when you're working on material this old, totally new information almost never comes to light.

Watching ABC News and they were doing the Ted Kennedy is so good and everybody likes him segment (while showing the casket laying is state.)

I get tired of this and do not want to throw up dinner so I change the channel to 'THIS' and the first thing I see is this clown fall down dead (with a painted on smile) and somebody says "It's okay that he died. Nobody really liked him anyway."

Took about ten seconds for both things to happen. I am still laughing about it.

Hmm.

The initial spurt of new funding will be used to begin work on what a "crew exploration vehicle," which O'Keefe said will "look totally different" from the space shuttle. It will be developed and tested by 2008 and will conduct its first manned mission no later than 2014. Lunar missions will begin between 2015 and 2020.

That tricksy Obama! He torpedoed the project's progress even before the election!

However, as part of the shift in focus, the United States will wrap up its current obligations on building the international space station by 2010, after which it will retire the remaining three space shuttles used to build and service the station, Bush said.

Vice President Cheney is related to Sen. Barack Obama.

At least that was the stunning announcement made yesterday by Lynne Cheney, who said that the very white vice president from Wyoming is in fact the eighth cousin of Obama, the Senate's only African American member. She said she discovered the link, traced back to a Huguenot who figured prominently in Maryland history, while researching her latest book.

"This is such an amazing story," Cheney said in an interview on MSNBC, "that one ancestor, a man that came to Maryland, could be responsible down the family line for lives that have taken such different and varied paths as Dick's and Barack Obama's."

"Obviously, Dick Cheney is the black sheep of the family," Obama spokesman Bill Burton said.

I lived in the real Woodstock in the early 50's (and yeah, I know the concert was held near Bethel, but Woodstock sounded better!) and aside from the truly (to me, anyway) astounding musical talent, the amazing thing about the Woodstock festival, was the fact that something like 500,000 young Americans sat around or danced or whatever and had a GREAT time for 3 days and there was NO violence.

Indeed. It's an incredible story. Sadly, the postscript is not a good one. After the Center Force retreated, Taffy 3 was subjected to the first Kamikaze attack of the war, which sunk the Uss St. Lo. In some ways, however, I think the attack was a failure. The Zeros used to make it should have been sent much earlier and should have been used to protect the IJN warships. Even if, as is probable, they were shot down, just their being there would have made the US carrier aircraft less effective.

Until true AI is developed (something I think might not be possible, and if so might be a bad idea) any unmanned mission is limited in adapting to changes in mission parameters. Sometimes the reality is not what the engineers expect and you need a brain and a pair of eyes to deal with it.

However, I'd still recommend one to my students over the name of a girl they are going to break up with in less than two months. Just on the general principle that the odds are better that they will stay a Democrat (especially around here), than that Maricela is really the love of their lives.

re: #629 Cato the Elder

No - I never said that.

Everything that can be accomplished by hoo-rah manned missions can be done better and more cheaply with unmanned probes. Trying to build a factory on the moon supposedly to save money on lift-off expenses for fantasized trips to - where, exactly? - is your classic boondoggle.

I'm for smart exploration.

Actually, no.
A robot can only do what it is designed to do. A human with equipment can vary the experiment to compensate for different conditions. For example, had people been running the life detection experiments that the Viking landers had (by using more general purpose equipent), they could have figured out why they showed ambiguous results.

And then, robotic visits aren't really exploration.
If you think they are, I would assume you would be perfectly happy by taking a virtual tour of, say, Paris, instead of going there.

Silly, and not very progressive so to speak. Do you really think we are at a point where exploration is pointless? Seems a bit parochial for a smart guy like you.

Exploration by robots is much more cost effective until we absolutely need men on the ground. The space probes have given us a lot more knowledge than a bag of moon rocks, although going there the first time did make more sense.
Even NASA would not like to spend such a big part of it's budget on manned missions. If we had unlimited funds to do both, fine, but we don't.

I've been arguing with libs about the necessity of a moon base for mining Helium 3 for years. Our uranium is only going to last so long.

Yeah and if we get a working fusion solution, but it has to use deuterium, we aren't much better off than we would be with current fission plants. The reactor will produce radioactive waste, and it will blast the internals with neutrons eventually turning it into a burnt out radioactive shell.

Deuterium reactions also require that whole coolant -> steam turbine -> generator bullshit where a He3 reaction produces an electric field from the ions produced which can be directly converted to electric power.

Arab News

Al-Shehi said the incident might prove to be the last straw for the deviant groups. “Obviously, nobody expected this to go down well for this tiny minority of extremists, which is driven by hate. This will prove to be the proverbial last nail in their coffin. People are revolted by what they did on Thursday night.” Dammam journalist Muhammad Al-Harbi said: “This indicates that the government’s policy of isolating the extremists and terrorists is succeeding and that there is panic in the terror camp.”

Faisal Muhammad, a university student from Jeddah, said: “These cowards showed their real face and their horrible intentions with an attempt like this in Ramadan. Terrorism has no religion and these people have no religion.”

My Father in Law served on the USS Maddox in Korea.

Some of the action in which the MADDOX participated during the Korean War was the following: Participation in the now-famous evacuation of the Hungnam Beach Head; escort of the U.S.S. PERCH (ASSP-313) in the first combat deployment of a submarine troop transport; the rescue of crews from two Navy attack bombers and an Air Force jet near Wonsan; holding what is believed to be a record for the Korean War; MADDOX was target for 720 rounds of major caliber fire from Communist Shore batteries. Once after receiving slight damage from shore batteries, Radio Moscow reported that she had been sunk.

He still gripes about the CO liking to go close in shore to shell N. Korean positions.

If there were Martians to talk to and Martian food to eat and Martian art museums to visit, the Paris analogy would hold.

On the other hand, if Paris's climate was like Mars's, I'd prefer to send a probe.

The Mars Orbiter pictures, to name but one mission, would not have been enhanced one iota by having a human on board. And those wonderful Rovers that outlasted their planned mission times by so much - what chance of that when you need to pack food for a human explorer?

At this point in time, going back to the moon or on to Mars in propria persona is just wankery. Let the Chinese waste their money.

If the Chinese want to live on the moon, let 'em. We'll see how that works out.

As for helium-3, "The irradiation of lithium in a nuclear reactor - either a fusion or fission reactor - can produce many kilograms of tritium if desired, and helium-3 after decay."

But a moon mine would be so much cooler! Right?

I wouldn't advocate permanently manned moon bases, I don't want Heinlein's Loonies. (Unless there are people who want to and volunteer to be "Low-G Adapts") I know that would be a one way trip. Nothing saying that you cannot have rotating crews, and frankly it would be small crews just to maintain the robots doing the mining I'm sure.

On that note, the fact that there is not a rotating section on the current space station to simulate at least .5-.8g, I find asinine but I digress...

That bit about lithium... That is how He3 is produced now, and if it was that great no one would be advocating going to the moon to get it. Unless the scientists on the Discovery channel special about current fusion efforts who talk about this issue are LYING, it's cheaper to mine it on the moon than to get it in the manner you speak of. They said as of now it is the only thing worth going to space to bring back as it would pay for any mission to go get it multiple times over. But they could be lying about it of course.

I know we're supposed to be respectful to the family, but Ted:

1. Cheated on a test and got kicked out of Harvard
2. Let Ms. Kopechne die. Either he wanted to keep from being arrested for drunk driving or just had bad judgment.
3. Criticized Jerry Ford for pardoning Nixon -- citing that no one is above the law.
4. Talk to the USSR in the 80's about helping the Dems in the 84 presidential race inexchange for helping the USSR in the future.

Ted was not to to be admired.

Never did admire him. I thought that the connection between him dying and the clown dying was similar.

And he always spoke so highly of *you*!!

I guess the point was that his R colleagues *did* admire him, even if they disagreed with him. I suppose that means that they should be voted out as heretics...

The problem is that Teddy was one of the obvious targets for twenty years of Rush's scorn. "The Drunk." "The Swimmer."

"I'll rip open my shirt, got Mother Rosie on my chest, Yes, I'm a Kennedy, Yes, I'm, Ted Kennedy, The room spins round and round and round and round."

An entire generation of conservative radio listeners got the full broadside of his scorn and never really understood the man. Shame, really. Big chunks of Republican legislation got through the Senate solely because Teddy compromised and signed off on it.

753 Jack Burton  Fri, Aug 28, 2009 10:47:18pm

I will quote the fiction version of Alan Shepard and Gordon Cooper from "The Right Stuff":

"You know what makes this bird go up? Funding. Funding makes this bird go up."

"No bucks... no Buck Rodgers."

Unmanned exploration is fine and I'm all for it, but it does not inspire the imagination or excite people. When the electorate doesn't give a rats ass about the little robot digging holes on Mars to look for ice, Congress doesn't give a rats ass either.

The reason why NASA gets so little support is once we made it to the moon, they promised a space station by 1980, Mars by 1990, and Alpha Centauri in the 21st century...

What did they deliver? Nothing. The space shuttle was a glorified space cargo plane. To the casual observer it would seem we spent the last 37 years doing jack shit in space other than playing satellite repairman and sending out a few robots. People were interested in the robots, but not enough to keep NASA rolling in the funds to avoid cancelling several unmanned projects and turning over manned missions to Russian kleptocrats.

The whole notion of space and science no longer excites people. This affects areas outside of space exploration as well. We have colleges packed full of future grievence mongers, ambulance chasers, art histroy majors who end up as Starbucks barristas, and so on but science & engineering classes... practically empty at every university I've seen lately.

When I went to college the first time to get an EE degree in the early 90s. The major was packed, impacted, waitlisted. You had to crash every class and all the professors were in "weed out the non-hackers" mode all of the time.

That same university now, EE classes are so empty they have to cancel many of them for lack of enrollment. I think they may have totally dropped the Aerospace engineering program as well. The Social Sciences are so packed they are building a bigger building for them.

So I understand that in many cases, manned missions are frivolous and unnecessarily costly. I'm just pointing out there are other factors to consider.

Fine, and yourself? The topics?

- One of the hamsters went all Rambo and decided to kill everything in sight. It was on some hard core hallucinogenics, so all it really ended up doing was getting stuck in the refrigerator and beating the condiments into a multi-colored mess. Catshup was quite shook up over the whole thing.

- Some actress, Reese something, stabbed a Lizard with some kind of eating utensil she had. She did it with her... with her...
At any rate, it turns out that she is also the leading cause of gout.

- Obama declared today "National Free Beer and Hookers Day", and was declared the "Best. President. Evar". Or the worst ever, I don't know. I lost track, too busy with the beer and hookers.

- Also, it was discovered that if beer could make a person strong, I would be able to kick the ever-lovin' shit out of Superman and The Hulk at the same time, with twelve tentacles tied behind my head.

I know I'm coming into this late... But here's the skinny:

Yes, and no.

Yes, you can install Mac OS X on a PC. But not just any PC will do.

[Link: buildahackintosh.com...] Has flawless system builds for genuine mac experience. Some light hacking is required.

[Link: www.psystar.com...] Sells PCs with Mac OS X pre-installed, no hacking required, but it will cost a bit more than building your own system. Also, Leopard costs $100, and Snow Leopard upgrade costs $30, so make sure you buy legit software.
