King Herod owned such a tub. He had a skin disease, and long soaks helped relieve the pain.

H. L. Menchen hoax. The false history of the bathtub.
On December 20 there flitted past us, absolutely without public notice, one of the most important profane anniversaries in American history, to wit, the seventy-fifth anniversary of the introduction of the bathtub into These States. Not a plumber fired a salute or hung out a flag. Not a governor proclaimed a day of prayer. Not a newspaper called attention to the day.
True enough, it was not entirely forgotten. Eight or nine months ago one of the younger surgeons connected with the Public Health Service in Washington happened upon the facts while looking into the early history of public hygiene, and at his suggestion a committee was formed to celebrate the anniversary with a banquet. But before the plan was perfected Washington went dry, and so the banquet had to be abandoned. As it was, the day passed wholly unmarked, even in the capital of the nation.
Bathtubs are so common today that it is almost impossible to imagine a world without them. They are familiar to nearly everyone in all incorporated towns; in most of the large cities it is unlawful to build a dwelling house without putting them in; even on the farm they have begun to come into use. And yet the first American bathtub was installed and dedicated so recently as December 20, 1842, and, for all I know to the contrary, it may still be in existence and in use.
Curiously enough, the scene of its setting up was Cincinnati, then a squalid frontier town, and even today surely no leader in culture. But Cincinnati, in those days as in these, contained many enterprising merchants, and one of them was a man named Adam Thompson, a dealer in cotton and grain. Thompson shipped his grain by steamboat down the Ohio and Mississippi to New Orleans, and from there sent it to England in sailing vessels. This trade frequently took him to England, and in that country, during the ‘30s, he acquired the habit of bathing.
The bathtub was then still a novelty in England. It had been introduced in 1828 by Lord John Russell and its use was yet confined to a small class of enthusiasts. Moreover, the English bathtub, then as now, was a puny and inconvenient contrivance—little more, in fact, than a glorified dishpan—and filling and emptying it required the attendance of a servant. Taking a bath, indeed, was a rather heavy ceremony, and Lord John in 1835 was said to be the only man in England who had yet come to doing it every day.
Thompson, who was of inventive fancy—he later devised the machine that is still used for bagging hams and bacon—conceived the notion that the English bathtub would be much improved if it were made large enough to admit the whole body of an adult man, and if its supply of water, instead of being hauled to the scene by a maid, were admitted by pipes from a central reservoir and run off by the same means. Accordingly, early in 1842 he set about building the first modern bathroom in his Cincinnati home—a large house with Doric pillars, standing near what is now the corner of Monastery and Orleans streets. …

I figured Oshkosh would recover at some point, but before it occured to me to go out and get some nice, cheap Oshkosh stock, they’ve nearly recovered their value from early 2008.
FWIW, Oshkosh manufactures the HEMTT (Heavily Expanded Mobile Tactical Truck) line of trucks for the US Military…but even with a new contract, I don’t think that’s enough for their stock to increase 7X in value since this spring…

Awesome.
Here is a true tale from iDub’s life:
I used to get in trouble as a teenager (big surprise, I know) — for leaving or going out without saying where I was going or when I’d be back. Basically I hated authority and being told what to do, or even asking permission to do something.
After one big parental fight about this (“Leave a note saying where you’ve gone and when you’ll be back!”) I left the following note the next time:
I’ve gone out. I will be back when I get here.
Obviously, a further fight ensued, in which I maintained:
“I said where I was going- out! And i said when I’d be back. You wanted a note, you got a note. What’s the problem?”
iDub. Bad girl.
I’m sure my own kids one day will do it to me as well. Assuming I have any.

Well, Nice.
As I posted on the last thread:
I guess the point was that his R colleagues *did* admire him, even if they disagreed with him. I suppose that means that they should be voted out as heretics…
The problem is that Teddy was one of the obvious targets for twenty years of Rush’s scorn. “The Drunk.” “The Swimmer.”
“I’ll rip open my shirt, got Mother Rosie on my chest, Yes, I’m a Kennedy, Yes, I’m, Ted Kennedy, The room spins round and round and round and round.”
An entire generation of conservative radio listeners got the full broadside of his scorn and never really understood the man. Shame, really. Big chunks of Republican legislation got through the Senate solely because Teddy compromised and signed off on it.
Mark Stein is a …what? He’s been elected to which? He has served in public service where? What is is his standing to comment on an individual who, despite his personal failings, may have been the single most influential Senator in history?
Despicable.

Mark Steyn, wrote The Washington Post’s Peter Carlson, “may be the world’s wittiest obit writer.” So here, by special request, is a collection of favorites from Mark’s morgue, obituaries and appreciations of towering figures and scurvy lowlifes and all points in between. Inside you’ll find Steyn’s take on Ronald Reagan, Idi Amin, the Princess of Wales, Bob Hope, Madame Chiang Kai-shek, Artie Shaw and Pope John Paul II - plus Zimbabwe’s Reverend Canaan Banana, Scotty from Star Trek, Nixon’s secretary and Gershwin’s girlfriend. I never worked with Kennedy either and I feel justified in saying that if he were a Republican he would never have been elected after the drove off that bridge.
I never knew Teddy Kennedy personally and I feel justified in saying that this is despicable.
This isn’t an accusation from Ted Kennedy’s political opponents, but a nostalgic remembrance by one of his friends. Ed Klein, former Newsweek editor, tells the Diane Rehm Show:
“I dont know if you know this or not, but one of his favorite topics of humor was indeed Chappaquiddick itself. And he would ask people, have you heard any new jokes about Chappaquiddick? That is just the most amazing thing. Its not that he didnt feel remorse about the death of Mary Jo Kopechne, but that he still always saw the other side of everything and the ridiculous side of things, too.”

Bollocks. Mark Steyn is an ass.
Here he is calling for ethnic cleansing and genocide:
Why did Bosnia collapse into the worst slaughter in Europe since World War Two? In the thirty years before the meltdown, Bosnian Serbs had declined from 43 percent to 31 percent of the population, while Bosnian Muslims had increased from 26 percent to 44 percent. In a democratic age, you can’t buck demography — except through civil war. The Serbs figured that out — as other Continentals will in the years ahead: if you can’t outbreed the enemy, cull ‘em. The problem that Europe faces is that Bosnia’s demographic profile is now the model for the entire continent.
I don’t see how it’s possible to interpret this excerpt — given that Steyn is also contending that these demographics are inevitable throughout Europe, and he offers no solution that would accommodate or assimilate Muslims — as anything other than outright advocacy of genocide and the Bosnian model of “ethnic cleansing” for the rest of Europe.
Here he is exhibiting his usual homophobia, ignorance, and islamophobia:
How does he degrade Native American religions and homosexuality, defend monotheism (and its homophobia), yet remain the numero uno Islamophobe of world wingnuttia? How indeed: by implying that Islam alone among the “Abrahamic” religions has ever endorsed polygamy. Oooo-kay.

I think that Steyn’s article makes a good point. Whatever his personality, and whatever his achievements, the fact remains that Edward Kennedy left a woman to die. Nothing he did or said can mitigate that. The fact that he got away with letting someone die does say something about America.

Oh, please do not start on that. If it has happened to anyone else, they would have been tried for manslaughter. But, he then had the termitity to take Ford to task for pardoning Nixon, siting that the President was acting “above the law”. I feel for his family and those who loved him, but as we remember the positive aspects of the man, we also recall that he had no shame—or that those around him made him what he was.

I don’t disagree, but in this specific case, he is commenting out of his ass. Again, take a look at the R’s who are speaking at Teddy’s funeral. These are people who actually knew him, worked with him, and deeply respected him. Steyn has none of their insight and knowledge and feels comfortable in bloviating.
Pitiful.
Did you see the story out today about his friend, describing how Senator Kennedy used to enjoy Chappaquiddick jokes, and used to ask people if they had any new ones?
Do you think that is something someone worthy of respect would do?

DF, I just don’t know how else to interpret this statement of his:
Why did Bosnia collapse into the worst slaughter in Europe since World War Two? In the thirty years before the meltdown, Bosnian Serbs had declined from 43 percent to 31 percent of the population, while Bosnian Muslims had increased from 26 percent to 44 percent. In a democratic age, you can’t buck demography — except through civil war. The Serbs figured that out — as other Continentals will in the years ahead: if you can’t outbreed the enemy, cull ‘em. Interesting…wonder if I could skate like Teddy did if I drove my car into a river and left to occupants to die while I called my lawyers and family to figure out my next move…which apparently would not include entertaining any thoughts of rescuing my passengers.

Hi there.
What about the Rockefeller-Snowe Cybersecurity bill?
nternet companies and civil liberties groups were alarmed this spring when a U.S. Senate bill proposed handing the White House the power to disconnect private-sector computers from the Internet.
They’re not much happier about a revised version that aides to Sen. Jay Rockefeller, a West Virginia Democrat, have spent months drafting behind closed doors. CNET News has obtained a copy of the 55-page draft of S.773 (excerpt), which still appears to permit the president to seize temporary control of private-sector networks during a so-called cybersecurity emergency.

Discussed at length yesterday. Hardly anymore exciting than already existing emergency powers such as ordering all commercial air traffic grounded, ability to seize control of highways, ships, trucks, rail transport and countless other resources in times of emergency. If anything, it’s an excellent idea to have a plan in place before anything unpleasant happens, rather than be left floundering in the midst of a crisis.

Believe it or not, there is an extremely influential sociological work from 1970 called The Tearoom Trade. “tearoom” is Brit slang for bathroom.
It’s all about the practice of gay men having anonymous sex in public bathrooms— in the US. ‘tearoom’ was gay slang for the practice in the US; in the UK it’s called ‘cottaging’.
The book itself has caused major controversy for ethical reasons. The author admitted years later that he was gay (but then closeted), which is obviously why he was interested in the topic at all.
Check the link. Really interesting.
Anyway— there clearly is a whole subculture that is invisible to straight men. The gay men presumably know not to hit on you — or you’ve seen subtle signals and not recognised the code, so they didn’t pursue it.

I never really minded rotating shifts…our schedule means we get a lot of time off (4 days between shifts). I’m sitting out waiting for drug test results for the next few days anyway, so probably won’t be working much next week at all…

I just don’t want to see anyone lose their posting privileges here over a discussion that could easily wait for a month or so.
Personally, I don’t have anything nice to say about the man, and that is why I am saying nothing about him in the wake of his passing.
There is a time and a place for all things.
My exact feelings. Nothing further to say that is nice so I’m in ignore mode for awhile.

Classic display of either ignorance or selective memory. It was perjury—he lied under oath in a deposition— which got him him disbarred from the AR Bar and the US Supreme Court Bar. The dalliance was not what stained his presidency—it was his hubris in lying to cover it up.
Classic— and predictable— case of Republican misdirection. I knew someone would make this claim.
The perjury only came about as the result of an extended witch-hunt digging into everything possible on Clinton — real estate deals, phony sexual harassment charges, everything.
They finally hit paydirt when they found some bint willing to tape a girl who’d given the Clenis a blowjob.
And now the claim is all “It’s the perjury! the perjury!” Bullshit. Lying about a blowjob? A lot of people have done that.
BTW, my point still stands about Iran-Contra and Watergate. You can’t pretend that Dems always get a pass and Repubs never do.

Am off to bed. Sorry to sound terse, but did those involve lying under oath? WJC did just that — an impeachable misdemeanor. If he ad said in Feb 1998, yep— I did the nasty with Monica— he would have spared this Country ten months of a silly soap opera. Instead he tried to brass it out. It was a mistake.

So far…the absolute worst of my mistakes at last count have resulted in ZERO- count ‘em- ZERO fucking fatalities.
And don’t be insulting my intelligence by suddenly finding religion so that St. Teddy the Imperfect can get ‘Get out of Accountibility Free’ card.
Then you have been lucky , haven’t you? Are you telling me that you have never driven when you have maybe had a little too much to drink? I know I have. I think most of us have. And there but for the grace of god we could have been in Teddy’s situation. In 19fucking69 for pity’s sake.

If he’d lied to the press, that would be one thing. Lying under oath is quite another. I’ll also remind you that it was Janet Reno who handed the prejury issue to Ken Starr. Judge Starr did not ask for it.

Real-estate deals? Are you referring to Whitewater? Yeah that was nothing more than a witchhunt. That’s why a sitting governor was convicted and removed from office.
Ultimately the Clintons were never charged, but 14 other persons were convicted of more than 40 crimes, including Bill Clinton’s successor as Governor, who was removed from office.
* Jim Guy Tucker: Governor of Arkansas at the time, removed from office (fraud, 3 counts)
* John Haley: attorney for Jim Guy Tucker (tax fraud)
* William J. Marks Sr.: Jim Guy Tucker business partner (conspiracy)
* Stephen Smith (Whitewater): former Governor Clinton aide (conspiracy to misapply funds). Bill Clinton pardoned.
* Webster Hubbell: Clinton political supporter; Rose Law Firm partner (embezzlement, fraud)
* Jim McDougal: banker, Clinton political supporter: (18 felonies, varied)
* Susan McDougal: Clinton political supporter (multiple fraud) Bill Clinton pardoned.
* David Hale: banker, self proclaimed Clinton political supporter: (conspiracy, fraud)
* Neal Ainley: Perry County Bank president (embezzled bank funds for Clinton campaign)
* Chris Wade: Whitewater real estate broker (multiple loan fraud) Bill Clinton pardoned.
* Larry Kuca: Madison real estate agent (multiple loan fraud)
* Robert W. Palmer: Madison appraiser (conspiracy). Bill Clinton pardoned.* John Latham: Madison Bank CEO (bank fraud)
* Eugene Fitzhugh: Whitewater defendant (multiple bribery)
* Charles Matthews (Whitewater): Whitewater defendant (bribery)
And it wasn’t just some dumb broad who was caught on tape. Bill Clinton was. He told Monica to lie under oath. Not only that, he said he would help her. He would tell her what to say.
Clinton didn’t lie for any cause. He perjured himself and suborned purjury to save his ass. He put this country and the Presidency through hell to try and save his own ass. Over something pretty petty. How low can you get. And the thing is, he didn’t have to. If he admitted the truth when it first surfaced, nothing would have happened. Nothing happened to Gavin Newsom. Clinton has nobody to blame but himself.
Oh, and the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy meme was born on the Today Show when Hillary blamed all the Lewinsky talk on the Republicans. And the press let her keep citing the VRWC and never shoved it back in her face. All they had to do was remind her of the first time she used it. It would have had a very short life.

Speaking of Clinton and Lewinski ( I know some were), Jeffrey Toobin wrote a good account in “A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President (2000)”.
Toobin leans left and in this book he takes Clinton’s side and spins to make it look like the accusers, prosecutors and witnesses are part of a “Vast Conspiracy”. But if you put on your lib filters it is still a well researched ,informative account and worth the read.

For some reason, I’m remembering The Simpsons where Homer runs afoul of Moe for whatever reason and is looking around for a new bar to hang out at…and winds up at a lesbian bar with thumping techno music and lasers. It shows him sitting at the bar for a few moments ponering cluelessly ‘There’s something different about this bar, but I’m not sure what exactly…’ before he realizes “Aha! This lesbian bar has no fire exit! Enjoy your deathtrap, ladies…”
Two lesbian patrons at the bar watch Homer leave in a huff and ask ‘What’s her problem?’

That was a byproduct of a variation of a ‘Yo mama’ fight when I was a bored young E-3 in the Army waiting for a truck to load up. That wasn’t even one of the better ones, but just about the only one I could remember that didn’t involve some sort of necrophilia reference.

Extremely cool. And like you, I normally do avoid or not like a lot of the big summer blockbusters…but this one was very different, very thought-provoking. And I was amazed because everyone had raved about Heath Ledger’s performance— and if anything, they sold him short. Mindblowing.
I do wonder sometimes if maybe his experience of prepping for that role played a part in his death.

326 | iceweasel Sat, Aug 29, 2009 4:26:51am |
BTW— sorry to get political here for a sec, but you know those Obama Joker posters?
My position was that I didn’t like them — exactly like I didn’t like nasty pics of Bush or pics of McCain showing him as a vampire. They’re all ugly and crass. I would never censor them, but I just dislike them and think they set a really nasty tone.
I didn’t think the Obama Joker picture was racist, just ugly. I didn’t hate it more than I did the ugly pics of Bush and Cheney, and I didn’t think it was racist. Check this out— it talks about the Dark Knight and also the prior Batman movies, and has a take on the difference.
This op-ed in the WaPo made me think a little differently about whether the poster was racist:
The new Obama poster has two basic thrusts. Obama is a socialist, or a crypto-socialist. And Obama is somehow like the Joker, unpredictable and dangerous. But joining these two messages together yields more questions and contradictions than good poster art can sustain. The Joker is violent and dangerous, but a socialist? And didn’t we see George W. Bush depicted as the Joker not so long ago?
Yes, in an image by Drew Friedman published online by Vanity Fair on July 29, 2008. That drawing at least played into a view of Bush popular among his detractors, that the former president was unpredictable and fast on the draw when it came to geopolitics. But the danger many of Obama’s detractors detect is more of calculating, long-standing deception, that he is quietly and secretly marshaling a socialist agenda, a view that would be better served by imagery that recalled “The Manchurian Candidate.”
(snip)
So why the anonymity? Perhaps because the poster is ultimately a racially charged image. By using the “urban” makeup of the Heath Ledger Joker, instead of the urbane makeup of the Jack Nicholson character, the poster connects Obama to something many of his detractors fear but can’t openly discuss. He is black and he is identified with the inner city, a source of political instability in the 1960s and ’70s, and a lingering bogeyman in political consciousness despite falling crime rates.
I’m not saying the poster is racist. I really haven’t figured out how I feel about that. I never liked it, and I never liked the ugly images of Bush etc either…but this op-ed did make me think a little differently, and help me to clarify why I think the Obama poster is so ugly.
And I think the contrast between the Jack Nicholson Joker character, and the Heath Ledger Joker, is incredible. Only one of those could have been made after 9/11, IMO. The Ledger Joker is a creature of the times and of Gotham post-9/11, IMO.

Crass and tacky I’ll buy, but not everything critical of Obama is racist. At this point, the term is nearly worthless. You’re racist for not wanting socialized medicine, you’re racist for not voting for Obama, you’re racist for (insert latest sin here)…the complaint is becoming worthless and is being made so by the people who INSIST that every disagreement with the man is somehow based on his race, no matter how convoluted the reasoning has to get to make it look that way.

I agree with you completely. I was biased against thinking those posters were racist— because that charge is being made all the time and with no evidence.
I started out thinking they weren’t racist, and being very cynical like “oh yeah all criticisms of Obama are racist, yeah right’.
That oped did make me stop and say, huh. That’s all. Still haven’t made up my mind on it. I think it’s worth reading. I’d recommend it.
I have loads of criticisms of Obama myself. And I’m really sick of everyone saying “you’re a racist” if you criticise him…

2009 bank-failure tally climbs to 84
Three more banks were closed by regulators Friday, bringing the 2009 toll to 84.The largest of Friday’s three closures announced by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. was Affinity Bank, based in Ventura, Calif.
Affinity, which had total assets of $1 billion, deposits of $922 million and 10 branches in Northern and Southern California as of July 10, will be taken over by San Diego-based Pacific Western Bank, the FDIC announced.
The FDIC said former Affinity branch offices in San Francisco and San Mateo will be-open Saturday and the rest will re-open on Sunday.
The FDIC said it and Pacific Western entered into a loss-share transaction of approximately $934 million of Affinity Bank’s assets.
The federal agency estimated the cost to the Deposit Insurance Fund at $254 million.
Earlier Friday, regulars closed Baltimore-based Bradford Bank and Forest Lake, Minn.-based Mainstreet Bank.

GERGEN: Anderson, as much as his friends would like to see it, right now, I — I don’t.
I think it’s — I think that Senator Kennedy’s presence was missed in the last few weeks. I think he — we would be much closer, as John McCain has said, to a bipartisan agreement had he been there to help negotiate that. And now there are Democrats who will want to rally around.
But I don’t see much evidence of Republicans coming around. The divisions in the country remain very deep. Town halls just in the last couple days have continued to be highly contentious. I — and I — I do think there’s a window for President Obama to rally Democrats. And — and he can begin doing that a little bit in his — in his eulogy on Saturday. But, most importantly, when President Obama comes back to Washington, he’s got a small window to rally Democrats in the name of Teddy Kennedy. And maybe he can move it.
But I don’t see the country moving his way. I think it’s going to be up to President Obama to assert his leadership.

With 14.5 million people out of work, the UAW is resisting further concessions:
Ford Said to Work to Bridge Gap With UAW Opposing Concessions
Aug. 29 (Bloomberg) — Ford Motor Co., seeking labor concessions granted to U.S. rivals, is working to bridge a gap with the United Auto Workers amid union resistance to a second round of 2009 givebacks, people familiar with the talks said.Ford’s labor chief, Joe Hinrichs, was told by UAW officials when bargaining began on Aug. 25 that members would reject further concessions, said two of the people, who asked not to be identified because the sessions are private. Senior negotiators held a daylong meeting yesterday, a third person said.
“Their differences are significant and difficult, but they’re talking,” said Harley Shaiken, labor professor at the University of California at Berkeley. “A long discussion means you have something to talk about; stalemates tend to be short.”
Ford, the only U.S. automaker to avoid bankruptcy, is trying for parity in labor costs with General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC.
To help those companies restructure, the UAW agreed to a six-year pay freeze for entry-level employees, a no- strike accord until 2015 and fewer union job classifications. The UAW has been reluctant to grant more concessions to Dearborn, Michigan-based Ford after a March accord to give up annual bonuses and cost-of-living increases and accept reduced layoff benefits.
The company said the changes will produce $500 million in annual labor savings.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. This is the 4th anniversary of the Katrina landfall and subsequent disaster up and down the Gulf Coast. Construction has been slow, there have been major problems with the levees (still!) and much of what people know happened during Katrina simply isn’t true.
This much is true: nearly 2,000 people were killed by the storm in the Gulf Coast, and many of them died when the levees around New Orleans failed miserably under conditions that shouldn’t have resulted in such massive and widespread damage. Only later do we realize that the levees were poorly designed and even more poorly maintained.
Now, we learn that the pumps that were installed after Katrina aren’t up to snuff either, and there are ongoing problems with rebuilding levees, including using salty soil that inhibits growth of grass that prevents erosion of those same levees.

… the battery in the smoke/carbon monoxide detector is low on power and beeps every 30 seconds and is located 10 feet up in the hallway where it cannot be reached and is driving me and my cats nuts and management hasn’t responded to my phone message about it and …
Life is good, except when that happens.
Can’t get a chair or step ladder out in the hall? I’d go right after it but worse comes to worse go in a bedroom with the cats, close door, put on low music and try to block it out.

Limbaugh predicted that racial grievance wouldn’t end with the election of Obama, but would get worse. And the professional racial grievance-mongers, including Gates, Jackson, and Sharpton, do seem to be getting more shrill.
So the claims that we have a post-racial president diminish in credibility as the “race card” is repeatedly played by the White House and its allies in an effort to squelch the opposition.
“You’re a racist if you oppose health care reform” is the most recent manifestation of this. It’s not smart of Obama to personalize controversial public policy issues like this. It actually drives racial polarization, and highlights racial grievance as a claim, not merely of legitimacy, but of supremacy. That’s dangerous.

See, this is one of those times a gun would come in handy. From 10 feet away, a smoke detector would be an easy target.
And your management service would pay a lot more attention to your future complaints.
LOL!

In other words, life in NOLA goes on as usual …

Will Obama surrender to Russia over missile defence?
Reports in the Polish media indicate that the Obama administration is about to abandon its plans for “third site” missile defence installations in Poland and the Czech Republic. If enacted, this would represent a huge turnaround in American strategic thinking on a global missile defence system, and a massive betrayal of two key US allies in eastern and central Europe. Such a move would significantly weaken America’s ability to combat the growing threat posed by Iran’s ballistic missile program, and would hand a major propaganda victory to the Russians.
/it’s a rhetorical question, Obama only adopts policies that that are anathema to the United States’ national security interest

Hey Lucius, good morning to ya! I LOVED these last lines from your link:
“The parents were asleep in their bedroom when their 6-year-old son ran into their room, woke them up and told them a man was sleeping in his bed. The boy said he was watching television in his room when the nude Brisseaux entered, lay down on the boy’s bed and went to sleep.
Brisseaux later admitted he had been out drinking at a New Haven club, police said, but denied going into the wrong home.
He claimed that his arrest was the result of racial profiling, police said.”
[emphasis added, realwest]
Somehow I don’t think Mr. Brisseaux is gonna win this one! LOL!

I’m good, and how are you doing today?
It just never occurred to me that I would see it.
And it’s not just me… here…
The strangest thing happened to me yesterday. Six months after I moved here, my older cat, Buddy [fifteen at the time], went out and didn’t return. I finally accepted that I would never see him again.
Yesterday, around noon, my manager from Kentucky called to tell me someone had called the business and said they had found my cat… here’s the phone number to call. He had been taken to the county animal shelter where they scanned him and found his microchip and said, “He’s black and tan striped and his name is Buddy”. And sure enough, it was him.
So my Buddy is back, two and a half years after he disappeared.

State radio in Rwanda was taken over by one tribe-one group-and they began to put out propaganda so that the Tutsis were targeted. And what resulted…was essentially genocide in Rwanda. The State, or this particular tribe which controlled the radio, very purposefully moved to ensure they could ‘do things’. Uh, their social change. Uh, in Venezuela and with Chavez—really an incredible revolution ’democratic’ revolution—to begin to put in place things that are going to have an impact on the people of Venezuela.

The Beck Boycott’s unintended consequences
Ethel C. Fenig
The organized boycott of Glenn Beck and his program is proving the truth of two public relations fundamentals; “just about any publicity is good publicity” and “I don’t care what you say about me, just spell my name right.”
It seems the boycotters, who are giving Beck loads of free publicity, carefully spelling his name correctly while also conveniently including his network and the times his controversial show airs, have helped Beck. All for free! It turns out that although advertisers are continuing to pull ads from Beck’s program —and shifting them to other slots on the Fox network which airs it—the fallout publicity has increased his audience.
As Robert Seidman of TV by the Numbers reports
Though a little scandal might alienate advertisers, it’s pure ratings gold. Last night Glenn Beck had over 3 million viewers at 5pm, second only to O’Reilly for the night. But, Beck had more 25-54 viewers than O’Reilly (888K to 876K). (snip) Even though Beck airs before primetime, when there are fewer people watching TV, he had the most 25-54 viewers in the cable news world for the night.
In the meantime, the advertisers are missing an easy opportunity to reach the prime demographic, viewers ages 25-54, who are probably tweeting and facebooking how much they enjoy Beck’s additional comments now that the program isn’t cluttered by intrusive ads from Applebee’s to Vonage and more. Which of course draws even more viewers.
And Beck—and Fox—are giggling all the way to the bank. As are the viewers.

Obama’s Diversity Czar at the FCC.
[Video]In the second clip.State radio in Rwanda was taken over by one tribe-one group-and they began to put out propaganda so that the Tutsis were targeted.

Britain accused of breaking promise to US over Abdel Baset Ali al-Megrahi
From that link:
‘A former Cabinet minister and two sources close to talks over the handover of suspects in 1999 told The Times that Robin Cook, then Foreign Secretary, promised Madeleine Albright, US Secretary of State at the time, that anyone found guilty would serve their sentence in Scotland, where the airliner exploded with the loss of 270 lives.
A senior US official said: “There was a clear understanding at the time of the trial that al-Megrahi would serve his sentence in Scotland. In the 1990s the UK had the same view. It is up to them to explain what changed.” ‘
Yep - quite a few people in Gord’s cabinet have a lot more explaining to do!

How GE’s green lobbying is killing U.S. factory jobs
WINCHESTER, VA—“Government did us in,” says Dwayne Madigan, whose job will terminate when General Electric closes its factory next July.
Madigan makes a product that will soon be illegal to sell in the U.S. - a regular incandescent bulb. Two years ago, his employer, GE, lobbied in favor of the law that will outlaw the bulbs.
Madigan’s colleagues, waiting for their evening shift to begin, all know that GE is replacing the incandescents for now with compact fluorescents bulbs, which GE manufactures in China.
Last month, GE announced it will close the Winchester Bulb Plant 80 miles west of D.C. As a result, 200 men and women will lose their jobs. GE is also shuttering incandescent factories in Ohio and Kentucky, axing another 200 jobs.
GE blamed environmental regulations for the closing. The first paragraph of the company’s July 23 press release explained:
“A variety of energy regulations that establish lighting efficiency standards are being implemented in the U.S. and other countries, in some cases this year, and will soon make the familiar lighting products produced at the Winchester Plant obsolete.”
The U.S. legislation in question was a provision in the 2007 energy bill that required all bulbs sold in the U.S.—beginning in 2012 for some wattages—to meet high efficiency standards.
Given the steady death of U.S. manufacturing, this factory was going to close sooner or later, anyway. Workers tell me they were happy when they heard in June that the factory was staying open at least through mid-2011—a plan GE abandoned the next month.
But the light bulb law is clearly the main driver in closing this factory. After all, the product they make here will be contraband by 2014.
“That was the nail in the coffin,” Madigan says.
These men, waiting in the shade in front of the employees’ entrance to the plant on a hot afternoon, all know another pertinent fact about the light-bulb law that is killing their jobs: GE lobbied in favor of it.
Why did GE, founded by Thomas Edison, lobby to kill the incandescent light bulb?
The company said in 2007 it wanted to make sure it was working under a single federal efficiency standard, rather than a patchwork of state regulations. GE also touts its compact fluorescents as one of the green products in its “eco-magination” initiative.
The workers don’t buy the green arguments, pointing to the mercury gas that’s in the fluorescents. “It’s illegal to dump mercury in the river, but not in the landfill,” two of them say in unison—it’s become a dark joke at the factory.
Robert Pifer, who will also be laid off in July if he doesn’t find a new job by then, has an explanation for GE’s support of the light-bulb law and its shift to the more expensive fluorescents. “Are they not just trying to force-feed people stuff they don’t want to buy?”
So, GE gets environmentalist brownie points for selling “clean” light bulbs, and they also get to charge more for their bulbs. But there’s another advantage—they save on labor with fluorescents, because they make the fluorescents in China.
Not only are wages lower there, but so are the regulatory burdens, both environmental and labor. The Times of London recently reported, “Large numbers of Chinese workers have been poisoned by mercury, which forms part of the compact fluorescent lightbulbs.”.
…
So that makes sense. I guess. To someone.
I have worked at the GE bulb plant in Lexington, KY, btw.

589 | Kenneth Sat, Aug 29, 2009 8:19:48am |
In an important development for the fight against extremist Islam in the West, the Dutch city of Rotterdam and Erasmus University Rotterdam have dismissed Tariq Ramadan, the Swiss-born Islamist academic, from his two local jobs.
…His simultaneous dismissal from the Rotterdam city post and the Erasmus appointment was announced on August 19. The specific reason: his weekly television program on PressTV, an Iranian government media network which operates studios in Britain and the U.S. in addition, of course, to the Middle East. PressTV also employs British politician George Galloway of the leftist-Islamist electoral alliance known as the Respect Party, and Yvonne Ridley, a former captive of the Taliban who became Muslim after her kidnapping.
Ramadan’s PressTV show was titled “Islam and Life” — not very different, one might note, from the notorious “Shariah and Life” feature run by al-Qaradawi on Al-Jazeera. Al-Qaradawi has used that platform for outrageous sermons against Jews and Judaism, among other objectionable opinions that support the British decision to keep him out.

Its a Public Holiday, one which has nothing to do with any religious holidays.
Its called ‘Bank Holiday’ because the banks are all closed on that day.
These Bank Holidays have been created by various governments, to give the workers some extra free days.
This particular August Bank Holiday used to be the first Monday in August - but the government changed it to the last one because the weather was so bad, for a few years running, when it was on the first Monday.
Well - we think that no matter what, you can bank on it that on any given Bank Holiday it will surely rain!

Okay, so the problem seems to be an issue with your DNS resolution. Your computer can find the IP address, but it doesn’t know how to convert the nice name (LGF. com) to the IP address.
So: Let’s see if this fixes the problem. Type in:
ipconfig /flushdns
Wait a minute, and then try to do
tracert [web site]
Where the website is LGF.

Just found this interesting opinion:
Assisted suicide could be excuse to kill burdensome elderly, says police chief
From that link:
‘Barbara Wilding, the longest serving female chief constable, said that a growing rift between young and old generations, combined with the pressures of an ageing population, is a significant challenge for police.
“Elderly abuse is something that we have yet to really grasp,” she said in an interview with The Daily Telegraph. “It is one of the things that I think will be the next social explosion.”
She drew comparisons with the first discovery of widespread child abuse in Britain in the 1970s, and said that the abuse of the elderly was “the same sort of social issue - it can be covered up and the victims do not have a voice.”
Asked about the potential impact of changing the law of assisted suicide, which is currently illegal, Miss Wilding replied: “From a policing perspective we need to be very careful on this to make sure it does not become a way of getting rid of a burden. I will be watching any change in legislation very carefully”. ‘
(Barbara Wilding was the Chief Constable of our police force here in South Wales - she is retiring now.)

Okay. Then I am left to conclude that, for whatever reason, Comcast doesn’t know about LGF, which is super weird. They would have multiple DNS servers across their network, so just because folks on Comcast in other areas can get to LGF doesn’t mean you can. I’m guessing AOL has it’s own DNS server when you go through AOL. It’s about the only thing that makes sense.
I would suggest you contact Comcast and let them know. I have no idea if they’ll be responsive, but it’s all I can think of.

Yma-
Looks like She Who Must Be Obeyed and I will be hopping the pond near Christmas this year. Her sister is finally marrying her significant other. So it’s a trip to the lovely but unfortunately named burg of Leighton Buzzard, Beds, for us.
Hiya - never been to that place, meself, I haven’t, so I couldn’t possibly comment!
But do pack some waterproofs, warm clothes and warm under- as well as night-wear!
Central heating has found its way to Great Britain - but the room temperatures are certainly lower than in the USA, around 65 F.

Ah, sorry about that. I forgot that Charles is using a hosting provider. Most of those places can have just one IP address and they use software to control which page you see based on which DNS name you ask for.
Rats. I still say it’s Comcast’s fault, as their DNS resolver isn’t giving you the IP address for LGF. It’s not the fault of Charles or of Hosting Matters, his provider.
Put the IP into the host file.

OK— let pick y’all brains on this. I built a movie room for the family ‘bout three years ago and bought an InFocus DLP projector and made a screen with screen paint and everything. It threw a pretty good 10’ image. Worked very well until earlier this year the picture started to degrade right before the bulb blew (literally). It’s almost $300 for a new bulb. But the drawback is you can only watch in a very dark room and the family wants to watch earlier in the day.
Should I buy the bulb—and risk it blowing again (the service cost is pretty high on the thing, too) or save my pennies and get a new(er) LCD/plasma—which will be smaller than the projected image?
Thoughts are welcome.

Shortly after two women gained power of attorney from a dying 83-year-old relative, they took all of her possessions and sold her house of 56 years, police said.
The pair pocketed the $235,000 from the house sale and cleaned out the elderly woman’s bank accounts and savings, sharing the money among themselves and family members, police and prosecutors say. They also arranged and pre-paid for her funeral.
However, Evelyn Roth made an amazing recovery and had no idea what her relatives were up to.
Now the two suspects, Roth’s cousin Virginia Ann Kuehn, 66, and her niece Kathleen Sue Jingling, 53, face a 35-count felony indictment charging them with first-degree criminal mistreatment, aggravated theft and first-degree theft. They’ve pleaded not guilty.

You can be assured Google will not notice Michael Jackson’s 200 birthday either.

I load up 2-shot in my Mossburg pump for home defense. Nice spread, won’t kill the neighbors…
And Yma, constant temps over 38C is not bragging. It’s brutal. I envy the folks in the upper midwest of the US who are having one of the coolest summers on record. The drought down here is hellish. Stage two water restrictions, dead lawns, &c.

Also the American Civil War was just. And in fact if the Union had not persisted, and paid the price to get rid of the evil of slavery & keep the country together, the USA would not have been there to help stop Hitler. Only 80 years separate the two conflicts.

For me Honduras was the real acid test of Obama, and he failed in the worst way possible. I can’t wait to see how he retaliates against his ‘enemies’ once his poll numbers crater into Congressional territory. It’s not going to be pretty.

You can even to back to the 3/5ths compromise of the Constitutional convention. Without that there would not have been a Union, there would have been two nations. The compromise set the stage for the eventual showdown over slavery as it could not last.
While the compromise allowed for slavery and we paid a price for it. It also allowed for the Union to form, and everything that has come from it.

Yes, the Civil War was just indeed!
Mind, I was thinking more of wars between nation states, where each and every opponent swore they alone were fighting the ‘just war’.

re: #666 calcajun
LCDs have come *way* down in price. I’ve got a 40” Sony Bravia that is killer bee. You can pick up a 1080 native for around $800 now. That’s Blue Ray definition and highly recommended.,

How about that, then:
Poland Without Missile Defence
From that link:
‘The US plans for building elements of the missile defence system in Poland and the Czech Republic are virtually certain to be abandoned, say Gazeta’s sources in Washington.’And:
‘Obama’s people believe that many global problems will be more easily solved together with Moscow,’ says Mr Ellison. ‘It’s about priorities. For many Democrats, disarmament is a priority and to reach a new strategic weapons reduction agreement with Russia, they are prepared to sacrifice a lot. Which doesn’t mean that they are soft and naive,’ explains the lobbyist.’
(My emphasis)Hah!
Solve problems ‘together with Moscow’?
Naaa - not naive, of course not!
How is this going to play with Moscow’s announcement that they’ll be deploying a missile defense system to guard against North Korean attacks?

Also, there are LED screens beginning to come on the market that blow LCDs out of the water in terms of dynamic range - something like 2 million to 1. This will drive down the costs of LCD screens significantly.

I had never thought of the 3/5 compromise that way, you make a great point.
What many forget it was the Southern slave states that wanted to count slaves, to increase their power not for any consideration of slaves as people, if they had succeeded slavery would have been much harder to eradicate. The Northern state did not want to count slaves, not because they weren’t people but because they were not free, thereby decreasing the power of the south, and eventually eliminated slavery, which the South wasn’t going to tolerate.
However neither side would would concede that much, hence the compromise.

Slavery would have gone away even without the war. It would have become unsustainable from an economic viewpoint. less agrarian society and increased machinazation (no I can’t spell)

Yes sir Kansas, the video you showed is snap shot of the New America’s security force in action not too far down the line.
Every liberty we have is under relentless assault.
An individual’s personal information of Americans is gone if this “health bill” is passed.
1.Gov. has all medical records on everyone.
2.Gov has instant access to an individual’s back accounts via the IRS.
3.4.5.6…7…8…etc, etc.Gov will have control on anything and everything from food staples to luxuries that they feel will risk overburdening the system such as fat or sugar in foods as well as cigarettes and cigars and on and on and on not to mention an individuals activities that could be seen as a risk to ones (now the systems) health and on and on and on.
Liberties under assault outside the health care realm are geared towards thought or the suppression of it as they will go after radio, whats left of television and the Internet to simply turn off “all” programs that have opposing views to the system.
The video of this security guard is what I refer to as a snap shot, there are millions of these types of people who don’t need to be told or led to carry out orders from those who control the system, imagine if the powers in complete control at the moment “did” set up an organized legion f these types of people.
2 years ago we all heard wild prophecies from some people and we all laughed and joked about them, it is chilling to see many of these things actually being played out.
I suggest town hall meetings, attend them and hope that we aren’t in a “changed” political environment where the usual red flags that these crooks heed are ignored.
