I can imagine that shortage is causing some headaches fighting the fires.

These fires should be allowed to burn naturally as they have for eons when lighting strikes occur. Fire prevention only allows the brush to build up to dangerous levels. As long as there is an adequate safety zone around structures the fires should not be put out. The burn will renew the ground and allow fresh growth to take place.

Look at the bright side? Some good things do result from wildfires, though it's obviously not ideal if your house stands in the way.

Small wildfires have numerous benefits. One is that a series of small fires over a long period of time prevents a devastating large wildfire from occurring. One of the reasons we have a lot of damaging large wildfires today is because for most of the last century, the school of thought was to immediately put out any forest fires. Suppressing natural fires for long can cause just one devastating fire to build up.

Wildfires convert old growth forests into newer growth. Old growth coniferous forests have a thick canopy and little sunlight reaches the forest floor. With little sunlight hitting the forest floor, not many plants can survive there. Consequently there is little food for animals to eat, and relatively few animals live in such an environment. A fire breaks down the canopy and allows the sunlight through, and new growth of numerous plants that could not survive in the shade grow in the sunny environment. Those plants attract animals that feed on them. New growth starts emerging within a couple days after a fire. A month after a fire in a place like a grassland, almost all organic material is new living biomass as opposed to detritus.

There are also plants that are adapted and even depend on periodic fires. This type of natural disturbance to an ecosystem is essential to the savanna and chaparral biomes. Some plants' seeds will only germinate after a hot fire, and fire-resistant roots will allow them to sprout quickly while using nutrients released during the fire. Fire-adapted plants can reach extinction with humans suppressing periodic fires, usually caused by lightning-- that is until an uncontrollable forest fire develops.

It is important to recognize that a forest fire does not consume the trees; the outside burns, but the dead wood is left standing there for sometimes decades. These dead trees provide excellent food source for certain insects (and the animals that eat them), and great habitat for small mammals and birds. Some animals actually favor freshly-burned areas. Black-backed woodpeckers only live in freshly burned stands of trees, for example.

The very day I returned from TDY in Hawaii was the Oakland hills fire..I remember a hot blowing wind that day..And watching the hills burn to the ground...There were fireman that passed because they could not escape down the hill...That is a day/nightmare I'll never forget...

I went through the Atlas peak fire in Napa as a kid...What are you going to do..burn up the mountain before it catches fire? People talk about degrees..But really when you see a mountain catch fire there is no degrees.. no preparations..no water hose...You get the hell out...Underbrush on a mountain is a joke..Everything burns...

You can't water the whole state, and LA pipes their water a long way. It's often rationed come drought time. All it takes is a dropped cigarette sometimes.

This is so OT, but I am sure that the Lizard Nation is the best resource. I need to prepare a very short and sweet presentation to my 9th grade World Cultures class on UN resolutions. I hvae searched the UN's site and other engines for info on how, exactly, a GA and/or SC resolution is put forth. I have some interesting stuff on the format and the language [phrases] used in the resolutions, but I cannot find anything that describes just how things become, well, resolved. IOW, how do the committees actualy go about making a resolution? What is the procedure?

Ca is crazy with the extremes. I remember back in the late 1990's (or) early 2000's I flew with my 'fella to San Fran for business and afterward we drove down the coast from Monterey to Morro Bay. We stopped at places like San Simeon. (beautiful!) It was mainly overcast, somewhat rainy, and very green.. Occasionally we'd see a waterfall. CA felt downright tropical.

There were reports of flooding before and after our trip. *CA flooding always releases the funky old green barcalounger down a muddy hillside.

Mostly, our guys aren't using hoses, as someone pointed out above, but backfires and landblocks. This is nothing like a house fire. You don't 'put out' a wildfire.

As for the Dodgers... I am actually from the Seattle area, but my parents are both from New York. My mom is from the Bronx (and a huge Yankee fan) and my dad is from Brooklyn (and was a huge Dodgers fan). My dad got to me first a taught me to hate the Yankees as evil incarnate and to love (and hate) the Dodgers (the complex jumble of emotions that Brooklyn fans of his era felt for the Dodgers' "betrayal"). So, I was rooting for the Dodgers even before Seattle got a baseball team (not including the Pilots).

Yep, it would have to be desalinated. Otherwise you'd put the fires out yet kill the vegetation which would lead to immediate wildfires in the future as well as advanced erosion and other ecological problems.

It was pretty crappy. I was on the machine gun range at the time was our Navy Corpsman when it happened. We were really close to the hill where it happened and every radio all of sudden went NUTS. I drove the corpsman up the hill (we were the first on the scene that I remember) where he immediately started triage. It really sucked.

I'm not aware of brush clearing regulations - except that people *should* clear more than they do.

Up in the mountains, a lot of the pine forest contains dead trees that cannot be cleared for forestry regulations, but that's not what's burning right now.

Property owners need to be very vigilant about this kind of thing--even letting dead pine needles build on on your roof can create problems.

I've wondered about stuff like that, would seem practical to haul some crop-sprinkler hardware out to the fireline and set it up and pump through it, rather than use a couple of hoses, with firemen who might be engulfed if winds blow wrong.

Lot of stuff could probably be done better, but none of it free.

Back where I came from, we had a nice pile of rocks off to the side of these town meetings, ranging in size from about golfball to softball. After the meeting, somebody got stoned, and everyone went home happy, besides the family and good friends of the stonee.

I'm right near the fireline in Sunland and woke up to a very ominous burning of Mount Gleason this morning. LAPD has a mandatory evacuation for a development called "Alpine Village" less than a mile away from my house and I expect it may be my turn next. This fire went from about 5000 acres on Saturday 11 AM to about 35,000 acres this morning, according to the latest from the governors press conference. The entire entrance to the Angeles Crest was socked in by smoke and flames could be seen glowing through the haze. Biggest, baddest, smokiest fire that' I've seen in my 12 years here. I personally witnessed the fire spreading into the Tujunga wash itself, about a mile from my home. Everything's covered with about 2" of ash and I keep getting it in my eyes as the wind picks up. Not a fun day here in SoCal, to be sure. But I am ready to rock if the order comes down. On a side note, I find the lack of coverage from the local TV News Divisions APPALLING. There was more coverage of the Palos Verdes fire which only burned a few hundred acres than there is of this out of control, 35,000 acre fire right in my backyard. Perhaps they could not preempt the EXCESSIVE national news covering the Kennedy funeral ? I really don't know but coverage has been sporadic at best, to say the least.

Desperate, the original monks looked for a way to buy protection. They were told that a man in town, named Hugh, could help them, but that he was very, very expensive. Figuring it was worth it, the monks contacted Hugh, and Hugh worked wonders for them. Soon, the interloping friars had been run out of town, and the monks were selling their own produce in peace.

Hugh continued to charge a high retainer fee, however, and soon the monks began to resent it. Feeling that they were being overcharged, they fired Hugh, and hired another man who charged them substantially less.

As soon as Hugh was off the job, however, the friars surged back into town with their cheap flowers and brass knuckles, and soon things were worse than before. The new man was unable to control them, and the monks had to go back to Hugh and promise him even more money before he would return to the job.

The lesson learned: Hugh, and only Hugh, can prevent florist friars.

Are your cars packed? You should seriously pack now, if there's a chance you will have to go. Round up the important papers, the kids, the pets, all the things you really don't want to loose. Take pictures of the rest & take the camera with you. It's FAR easier to unpack the car in a couple of days, if you don't need to go, than pack in a race to beat the fire.

I'm not sure. All I'm seeing is that they're throwing questions his way. One would think and IRS audit would come his way. The unreported income is rather big coming close to $500,000 or maybe more. The problem is that there aren't any apparent alternatives out there at the moment.

The "fairy tale" aspect makes this even scarier. You know that 9 trillion dollar number is probably a low ball figure. All of their budget numbers are probably on the low side. At the same time the state are "running out of money."

Want to get really pissed off? Just 2 months ago they said the deficit would only be about 3 Trillion. Guess what the REAL deficit will be in 2-3 years? Closer to 15 Trillion, if the past performance of our wonderful politicians is any indicator.

My daily commute is on highway 2 (Angeles Crest). The day that fire started I was coming down the Crest into LA and LA was covered in what looked like the normal June Gloom. Only, it isn't' June, and the gloom was brown. I've never seen the smoke that bad from any fire.

From where I live the smoke is overhead almost all day. The Sun burns red and the world looks like you are wearing dark orange sunglasses: greens are brighter, everything has a strange feeling about it. My car is lightly dusted with ash.

This must be what the Apocalypse will look like.
