Monday Night Music: Keith Jarrett Trio: ‘With a Song in My Heart’
Possibly the finest jazz piano trio ever: Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, and Jack DeJohnette, playing a classic Rodgers and Hart tune, “With a Song in My Heart.”

When you're rich and famous, you figure you'd be rich or famous anywhere.
When you're a plain American shmoe, you realize what a grand deal it is to be a plain American shmoe as opposed to a plain shmoe most other places.

Grandson sues to clear Stalin over killings
Stalin's grandson, Yevgeny Dzhugashvili, is seeking 9.5 million roubles ($299,000) from the Novaya Gazeta newspaper and 500,000 roubles from the author of an article published last April claiming Stalin personally signed politburo death orders.
Leonid Zhura, a convinced Stalinist who is representing Dzhugashvili in court, said that the article -- based on declassified Kremlin documents -- damaged Stalin's reputation.Ah ez speechless.

Texas? They are in our division and we have had just the greatest football parties watching them get their asses kicked by the Colts...Good food..Cold Beer...and Texas getting beat.. It's a Hoosier tradition..
They are playing the Vikings tonight...I am rooting for the Texas D to just rip into Farve...And I mean this...Beat him badly...Farve has gone from the best story in Sports in the most embarrassing figure...I'm rooting against both teams! But mostly for Texas to knock down Farve's huge Ego...

Middle class tax creep coming . . .
AFL-CIO, Dems push new Wall Street tax
The nation’s largest labor union and some allied Democrats are pushing a new tax that would hit big investment firms such as Goldman Sachs reaping billions of dollars in profits while the rest of the economy sputters.
The AFL-CIO, one of the Democratic Party’s most powerful allies, would like to assess a small tax — about a tenth of a percent — on every stock transaction.
Boy, I sure hope no one making under $250K trades or owns stocks.

I think that the political contribution portion of Union dues should not be deductible on Federal taxes. If you write a personal check to a politician's campaign, its not deductible on your taxes. But if your Union donates $100 of your Union dues to the same politician's campaign, you get to deduct it along with the rest of their Union dues. That amounts to different rules for different people and the Constitution is supposed to frown on that.
I think it would be interesting to see that challenged in court.

1) Magic
2) Kobe
3) Kareem

Rambis is the best of the lot, IMHO, because he's the little guy who never had that much talent. Loved watching him play for the Charlotte Hornets in 88-90.

The Bush tax cuts expire -- that is a tax increase for just about everyone. Then add 4-5% tax rate increases on top of that.
The top 10% of income earners pay 70% of all taxes. The top 1% pay 40% of all taxes. The bottom 40% of earners pay nothing.
That will only get crazier. IMO - Everyone should have some skin in the game. The Democrats are going to make it so over-the-top-unfair - the only way to find a job in this economy will be to join a governmetn union. That's the plan.

After he struck out swinging at a ball in the dirt and walked back to the dugout I waited for the last second and asked him if he had a fishing license and he flipped me off. Ha. That made my day.

Federal government to buy land for Flight 93 memorial
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Pennsylvania landowners around the September 11, 2001, crash site of Flight 93 have reached an agreement with the federal government allowing construction of a permanent memorial there, the government announced Monday.U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said the National Park Service has "reached agreements with all the landowners needed" to establish the permanent memorial for the 40 people killed in the terrorist hijacking nearly eight years ago.
Salazar said the government will pay the landowners approximately $9.5 million.
One of several airliners hijacked on September 11, 2001, by terrorists who intended to use them as flying bombs, United Airlines Flight 93 went down near Shanksville, in western Pennsylvania.
Salazar described the negotiations as cordial, with landowners wanting "to walk away saying we've done it for the right reasons."
...
A Park Service official expects construction to begin in November.

Is it just my imagination, or does it not seem that those most grateful to be Americans are not the richest or the most famous, but just the regular folks?
A HS teacher, back in the 50s, had us calculate the odds of being born an American based on world population at that time ... then we discussed it in terms of how our lives would have been different in different countries.
I remember very little specifics from those days - but that piece I still clearly do.

H1N1 War to be fought in the ICU
"As an ICU doctor, it's very, very, very rare I can't deliver enough oxygen to someone to keep him alive. They die of other things, right? They die because their organs fail.''
"In this case, we can barely oxygenate them."
"I want the public health people to understand: If we breach ICU capacity, a lot of people are going to die,'' he cautions.

I recall when the Vietnam Wall first appeared, how many vets and citizens were offended by its stark design. Now, it's pretty well universally acknowledged as a brilliant, simple, moving statement to a war that still evokes a lot of complex emotion, overridden by sorrow and anger. My family suffered a great deal from that war, and I've been to the Wall several times. It wrecks me every time.

The crescent and the star of their flag and that Turkey is essentially an Islamic nation. They claim the plan was based on this.
I must insist that Turkey is a secular kinda-sorta-democracy with a majority Muslim population. Ataturk would want me to mention that.
I can vaguely see the charge that the semi-circle is actually a crescent, I think it's ridiculous, but you can sort of see what they mean, visually speaking.
I just can't think of a reason why if you were gonna secretly work a Muslim visual in, you'd pick the flag of Turkey, specifically. They're not exactly jihad central, what with their yammering to get into the EU. Hell, they're in NATO.

That will probably end up being reported as a 23% pay cut. Everyone knows that in Government-speak when you reduce a projected future increase its actually a cut.

Last time I had the flu, was about twenty years ago. I was a college student. I was lying in bed, sick as a dog, too weak to move, and trying to cheer myself up, I muttered "It's just the flu. No one ever died from the flu."
Then it occurred to me that that was, well, seriously not true. And I started laughing, and almost fell out of bed because I couldn't stop.

ECMO machines are hell on the system. Infants can handle it for about 21 days, then they HAVE to get off of it. Their organs will start shutting down if they don't. Adults last longer, but overall survival once you go on ECMO is about 60%.
I got really close to this young man who needed heart surgery, great kid about 11. We played cards before the docs came for him. I hung around for a while and then had to take off - had a meeting. Came back that night and learned he had come out of surgery on ECMO.

There was a lot of opposition to the Viet Nam memorial.
Also in the capital, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was dedicated in 1982 to commemorate the U.S. personnel who died or were declared missing in action in Vietnam. The memorial, which consists of a V-shaped black granite wall etched with more than 58,000 names, was at first a source of controversy because it does not glorify the military but invites somber reflection. The Asian ancestry of its prizewinning designer, Maya Lin, was also an issue for some veterans. In 1983 a bronze cast was added, depicting one white, one black, and one Hispanic American soldier. This led to additional controversy since some argued that the sculpture muted the original memorial’s solemn message. In 1993 a statue of three women cradling a wounded soldier was also added to the site to commemorate the service of the 11,000 military nurses who treated soldiers in Vietnam. Despite all of the controversies, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial has become a site of pilgrimage for veterans and civilians alike.

re: #344 wee fury
Hi wee fury - I'm more than a little familiar with the backstory on the US Vietnam Veterans Memorial, as we were just starting to put together the Mayors 100 (a committee of 50 of us Vietnam Vets and 50 businesspeople who would help to raise funds for it - and yes, Donald Trump DID give one million bucks to it in NYC) and so was in touch with a number of folks on the DC Memorial.
Most of the opposition I was told (and observed) was not that an Asian woman designed it, nor because it doesn't "glorify" the military. MOST of the opposition was centered around the fact that OUR memorial would be the Only Black Memorial in a City full of White Marble and the only Memorial that would be below ground level.
I was, fwiw, against putting up the Bronze statue of the three men (put up, I do believe for racial and ethnic diversity reasons) but had no trouble with the Nurses being added at all.

Hamas leader denies Nazi genocide of Jews
A Hamas spiritual leader on Monday called teaching Palestinian children about the Nazi murder of 6 million Jews a "war crime," rejecting a suggestion that the U.N. might include the Holocaust in Gaza's school curriculum.
...
Hamas spiritual leader Younis al-Astal lashed out after hearing that the U.N. Relief and Works Agency, the main U.N. body aiding Palestinian refugees, planned to introduce lessons about the Holocaust to Gaza students.Adding the Holocaust to the curriculum would amount to "marketing a lie and spreading it," al-Astal wrote in a statement.
"I do not exaggerate when I say this issue is a war crime, because of how it serves the Zionist colonizers and deals with their hypocrisy and lies," he wrote.
A U.N. official said no decision has been made about introducing Holocaust education in Gaza.
heh.

re: #263 SanFranciscoZionist
Last time I had the flu, was about twenty years ago. I was a college student. I was lying in bed, sick as a dog, too weak to move, and trying to cheer myself up, I muttered "It's just the flu. No one ever died from the flu."
Then it occurred to me that that was, well, seriously not true. And I started laughing, and almost fell out of bed because I couldn't stop.
And what medically necessary substance were you smoking when this laughing jag came on?

re: #4 HoosierHoops
I saw this jazz band once at the Great American Music Hall In SF years ago..
Their name was Oregon..And they just blew me away...I can't remember who they were but they were just monsters on the stage...
I should google them and download a CD
Could be my favorite band:
Ralph Towner - guitar, keyboards
Paul McCandless - woodwinds
Glen Moore - bass
Collin Walcott - percussion, sitar (died in 84)
Trilok Gurtu - percussion (87-93)
Mark Walker - drums (97-present)
Conventional wisdom says their peak period was in the 70's, but I think their recent stuff holds up well against anything they did.
