Sent my 16 year old to Germany for a few weeks over the summer. He asked me if it was OK to drink beer since the 16 year old Germans he was with did (legal age is 16). I said "OK" because (1) when in Rome ... (2) no one had access to cars, so I'd rather he learn his limits before driving becomes part of the picture, and (3) I drank a few beers at 16 and still find our drinking laws prudish.
Still - It was strange to see his facebook page with the drinking pictures.

Well - in a naked act of aggressive paternalism, I just barged into the room of my 16 year old and into the room of my 14 year old.
16 year old was squandering time on youtube watching Midnight Oil videos (I remember playing that band on KCPR at CalPoly. And now I know why my 5 year old decided to break out in song tonight with his own rendition of "Beds are Burning".)
14 year old was actually reading. A book. His facebook page is up on his computer, but it is across the room. Reading. A book.

Well back in my day ... by golly - now you listen up, you whippersnappers! Back in my day we didn't have Tiger Balm. No - you had this stinky, exotic stuff called atomic balm. And -- by crakey -- I remember lining up at the start of some big races wanting to throw up because of my nerves - and that smell would be hanging in the air. I still want to hurl when I smell it.
Yup - that is how it was in my day.

You know what I've noticed about LGF? It's sometimes kind of like it's two sites instead of one. One site is for people who post comments in the thread and talk to each other, like I'm doing now. The other site is just for people to post spinoff links, often pimping their own blogs, and for other people who just log in and ding the spinoff links up or down.
The "comments area" here has been exhibiting a strong community pressure toward calmness, rationality, and moderation, which I like. But the "spinoff links site" really tends to turn into a forum for extremist right-wing conspiracy theories, especially late at night. It's really like a different place. I remember sometime in 2009, Ron Paul's website actually made it to the number-one rated spinoff link on LGF, for at least a few hours.

The threat was dismissed because it was dismissible. That is called..."the real world". Where politicians, the MSM, and others use publicity to generate a falsehood. Being caught at it does not indict the non-existent, supposed incidents that are in the minds of the gullible. Crimes are real. Proof is real. To extract reality from a falsehood and try to convince of it is not going to work.

Well, they do sort of escape from editorial review, as it were, because a lot of us aren't paying attention, and Charles can't always be monitoring them either.
I think I'm evolving an ability to select out the ones that interest me. For example, the "top-rated" links are usually worth looking through to see if they're clickworthy. And I often try to look for links that are to primary sources, rather than to other blogs, although I also enjoy learning about another new blog now and then.
There are certain people who do seem to post every new entry into their own blog as a spinoff link, sometimes 10 or more links per day, and I've learned to pretty much ignore those. It's not that I necessarily dislike their blogs, it's just that, if I want to see every new thing they've posted, I'll just go to their blog and look there.

I had asked earlier this evening (Eastern Time!) if you are safe out there - on the Open Thread today there were a number of comments and you had a short video of the smoke burning like CLOUDS over the City.
So - are you OK out there? - here on the East Coast the newscasters are saying things like "L.A. is Burning" and all and I'm just concerned for your welfare.
Yes, I'm fine -- no danger where I live.

Well I don't know DF - I've been reading where more and more House Dems are looking to Steny Hoyer for leadership than they are to Pelosi cause she's something more of an ego-centric personality. And if that's true and Steny says it's still on the table, I'd be surprised if it wasn't.
That's my read as well. GMTA

I agree with that - have you noticed, btw, that not only do the less mentally stable of us tend to post more on the later night spin offs -and that there are more folks who post spin offs late but never seem to comment out here?
Yeah, that's sort of what I was referring to. There's sort of a whole class of LGF members who are just here for the spinoff links -- to submit them, and/or ding them up or down, without ever participating in the comments section.
I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. Lots of people may have worthwhile links to exchange, and they just don't happen to feel like chatting here all day. More power to them. But the "twin sites" dichotomy does mean that the links section can evolve a completely different feel from the comments section, and it frequently seems to veer into far-right craziness. Actually at some point within the past few weeks, one of those "links only" crazies actually posted a few comments, and promptly got himself banned in the process.

Had to set my beer down to take the picture... ;)
And for RW forgot to add - two masts in this case equals a ketch.
Sloops are one mast, other variations depend on which mast is taller, or how many foresails you have. (sails in front of the mast - ie., Cutters)
Well thanks for the education! Though for some reason I seem to remember that Privateers (pirates) liked using sloops and the ones I've seen on the History channel were two masts, with the larger one behind the shorter one.
And is there a generally acceptable "length" between a boat and a ship?

When I look, I tend to only look at the ones posted by people whose names I recognize. At least I have a clue as to what they might be interested in taht would also interest me. Saves a little bit of time.

And is there a generally acceptable "length" between a boat and a ship?
According to Cecil Adams, among sailing vessels, a ship his a square-rigged craft with three or more masts, and a boat isn't. Among motorized vessels, a ship is designed for "oceangoing or at least deep water transport," and a boat isn't.
I seem to recall hearing somewhere, that, in U.S. Navy parlance, every vessel is called a ship, no matter how small, except for submarines, which are always called boats, no matter how large.
We have a lot of Navy veterans around here... did I get that right?

It is terribly disturbing that any official, including the president, faces threats.
Look - when I worked for a government agency, we would get threats, personally, from people upset when we had to tell them things were not going to go their way. It's frightening, and all threats should be taken very seriously.
I would like to know, however, the extent of the uptick - I know there's an article that says 400%, but I've been unable to find anything from the secret service about the actual number.

I've also noticed a lot of - well I don't know how to classify 'em - right wing, anarchist, far left or whatever (but mostly creationist I think) stealth down dingers late, I mean really late at night doing their thing, too.
That's one reason why I like Master Spy - you can sometimes see it happening and I like to call 'em out to play. Not being mean spirited or anything when I do that, it's just that if someone down-dings me, and he or she and I can talk about it, I can sorta get a feeling of why they down-ding a certain comment and either learn something or maybe teach something, but you can't do either with folks who won't "come out to play".

You know what would be an interesting statistic? For each user, how many of his or her submitted links are to his or her own blog. For example, something like this:
User: Raging Raymond
Links submitted in last 30 days:
www.raging_raymond's_blog.blogspot.com: 497
www.foxnews.com: 5
www.gardeningtips.com: 2
I have a feeling that propensity for linking to one's own blog would be strongly correlated with a low number of comments.

A CNN source with very close to the U.S. Secret Service confirmed to me today that threats on the life of the president of the United States have now risen by as much as 400 percent since his inauguration, 400 percent death threats against Barack Obama — quote — “in this environment” go far beyond anything the Secret Service has seen with any other president.

But... I agree with you. The majority of spin-offs appear to be shameless self-promotion, or links to questionable sources.
I know on what people want to click - from memory I recall that I've posted some of the most clicked-on entries (over 400 clicks). However, these are to topics like "the world's best butt"! People want to see flesh, or, if they are forced to read, they want to read controversy. This is in JEST* - but if the 400% was cause Bush got only 2 and Obama got 8 that's a magnitude of 400% but not terribly significant all by itself.
*Jest because we all know or at least suspect that Bush got WAAY more than two, and therefore Obama must have received or had many more threats made against him.

And others are mostly reading it for prurient reasons. I didn't read it, but I rarely read any spinoffs. If I had seen it, I would have read it for both reasons.

Muhammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī
Abū ʿAbdallāh Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī[1] (c. 780, Khwārizm – c. 850) was a Persian mathematician, astronomer and geographer, a scholar in the House of Wisdom in Baghdad.
His Kitab al-Jabr wa-l-Muqabala presented the first systematic solution of linear and quadratic equations. He is considered the founder of algebra, a credit he shares with Diophantus. In the twelfth century, Latin translations of his work on the Indian numerals, introduced the decimal positional number system to the Western world. He revised Ptolemy's Geography and wrote on astronomy and astrology.
His contributions had a great impact on language. "Algebra" is derived from al-jabr, one of the two operations he used to solve quadratic equations. Algorism and algorithm stem from Algoritmi, the Latin form of his name. His name is the origin of (Spanish) guarismo and of (Portuguese) algarismo, both meaning digit.
1551, from M.L. from Arabic al jebr "reunion of broken parts," as in computation, used 9c. by Baghdad mathematician Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi as the title of his famous treatise on equations ("Kitab al-Jabr w'al-Muqabala" "Rules of Reintegration and Reduction"), which also introduced Arabic numerals to the West. The accent shifted 17c. from second syllable to first. The word was used in Eng. 15c.-16c. to mean "bone-setting," probably from the Arabs in Spain.

Without the oud we wouldn't have the lute. Without the lute we wouldn't have the guitar. Without the guitar we wouldn't have Hendrix...
may this be love
The words "lute" and "oud" are both suspected to be derived from Arabic العود (al-ʿūd), consisting of the Arabic letters ʿayn-wāw-dāl, meaning a thin piece of wood similar to the shape of a straw, referring either to the wood plectrum used traditionally for playing the lute, or to the thin strips of wood used for the back, or for the fact that the top was made of wood, not skin as were earlier.[citation needed] However, recent research by Eckhard Neubauer suggests that ʿūd may simply be an Arabized version of the Persian name rud, which meant string, stringed instrument, or lute. Gianfranco Lotti suggests that the "wood" appellation originally carried derogatory connotations, because of proscriptions of all instruments of music in early Islam.
According to Farabi, the oud was invented by Lamech, the sixth grandson of Adam. The legend tells that the grieving Lamech hung the body of his dead son from a tree. The first oud was inspired by the shape of his son's bleached skeleton. The oldest pictorial record of a lute dates back to the Uruk period in Southern Mesopotamia - Iraq - Nasiriyah city nowadays, over 5000 years ago on a cylinder seal acquired by Dr. Dominique Collon and currently housed at the British Museum.

Interesting. It now says $225 per night. They must have a thing that picks up on extra clicks and jacks the price.

My kids flat out refuse to allow us on their facebooks. When their mother complained of being "blocked", our lovely daughter "K" explained,
"You know, mom, we talked about this, and it just isn't appropriate for you to have permission to read my wall. Thank you for being so understanding, mom."
Where do they get this attitude?

List of Famous Muslim-Americans
A number of people of accomplishment, to be sure. Interestingly, there are a number of criminals and people with dubious association to extremists on that list too:
# Nihad Awad - National Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations [4]# Ibrahim Hooper - National Communications Director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) [8]
# James Yee - former US Army chaplain with the rank of Captain [11]
Warith Deen Mohammed - Former leader of the largest Muslim organization, the American Society of Muslims (son of Nation of Islam leader)

My friends at CU Boulder just won a $2M NSF grant to study social networking in the middle of crisis situations.

I guess in the middle of a crisis, the first thing you want to know is that your kids are okay.

re: #11 The Other Les
Same here. In addition to mom & dad, as I tried to explain to my son, LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT also monitors these pages. I didn't read the story yet nor did I read through all the posts here but wanted to make this point in case no one else has.
Think kids would 'get this' ? Nope. My oldest son isn't old/mature enough yet to get the ramifications of some of the pix/comments on his and others pages. I guess it must be nice to be free, white and 21 and not give a flyin' f*ck what anyone else thinks. Personally, I cringed when checking out his 'page' and the pages of others that visit his page, want to be cyber buds with him etc. You would think this would all be counter intuitive...new generation.
Share every last thought with the world. Like father like son ! But hey, I'm old and about done - what do I care what anyone else thinks ? In case anyone thinks the above is a bit 'paranoid' - I'm not and they really do.
There has been more than one story in our local rag in which the police/DA have referenced picking up on some kids 'proclivities' through visiting their web page(s).
I could never understand why anyone would sew a pot
leaf patch on their jean jacket or similar on a bumper sticker. Talk about lookin' for trouble !
I asked my son about some of the quotes I've read on his and other kids pages - they often sound like they're original thoughts/musings of the 'owner' of the web page.
Often they're just lines from some dumb teen movie and put up for a laugh, not indicative of the kids thoughts at all, just meant as a joke. Some could be easily misinterpreted. I would not doubt for a second that school 'officials' do a little extra curricular research themselves or that info is shared between LEO's and the local school(s). if your going to engage in under age drinking, senior 'cut days' parties, or like some recent gold medal winners have found out the hard way, 'passing the bong' - what would posses you to post pix of these events on the 'net for all the world to see ? When I was a kid it was 'cool' to be known as one that could keep his/her big mouth shut ! Think of the data base that can be built on anyone today - evreything from marital status, driving history, financial history etc., is already collected and shared (for a fee) so why add youthful indiscretion(s) to the list ? Scary. I've severely curtailed my 'sharing' and have resisted all invites to join sites like 'Facebook' etc. I may partake but not until I've come up with a carefully crafted 'tell us about yourself'
story !
The only 'record' I have of my grandparents is a few
brownish photos of them kept in a photo album. I often wonder what they 'sounded' like, looked like walking and talking and I'll never know. In one sense it's pretty cool that future generations will be able to watch their parents taking their 1st bike ride etc. but, IMHO, some things should be left to the imagination.

My youngest bro. sent me this link - something to do with
'Twitter'. I don't even know what a 'Twitter' is but when I visited the link I was reminded of the Nat. Geo. show the other night on Saddams Iraq - Iraqis talking about how one could not trust even bro or sis because you could never be sure who was reporting you to Saddam:
Good grief !

re: #19 Slumbering Behemoth
Oh, had no idea anyone else knew of this page when I posted last. What are the odds ? Really, is this a coincidence or it this page well known to many ? My kid bro sent me the link. I presumed it was to a page he had stumbled upon at random - 'dad' doesn't sound like anyone I / we would know !

re: #24 Desert Dog
LOL !!! Same here. I once got caught by my son as he was on an extension phone as I discussed with a neighbors mom our kids plan for a 'sleep over'. Although we didn't know each other as kids we found out instantly we had shared childhood memories. I said to her 'um, just throwing this out here, not sure what you're gonna think...but, have you thought at all...I mean, when I was a kid we had this scam we played on our parents..' She cut in immediately with
'yeah, I was thinking same - you mean the old " Mom, I'm sleeping over at x's house tonight ok?" And your kid tells you he's sleeping over here ? "Exactly" a shared, knowing laugh and then we hear my son 'Dad , I can't believe you think I would lie to you like that". i wanted to die LOL !! Turned out they really were just planning a good old fashioned 'sleep over' so they could play X Box games half the night. Both my kids have been relative little angels compared to me. I remember walking through town one day and a car full acquaintances from school happened to come to a stop along side me. I guess to impress me they yelled out "Woo- hooo, we're heading to the 3 day concert at the Poconos". I asked if they had room for one more, they said yes and my parents didn't hear from me for 3 days - just disappeared to Penn. on a whim. Didn't have a ticket either - figured I'd just crash the gate (which I did). 3 days of being stuck in one (muddy) spot, surrounded by almost 1/2 million people, no food or drink, no money and no clear idea of how I would get back home. Didn't care either. I did this kind of stuff all the time. My parents wish that I have one 'just like you' never came to pass - I thank G_d every day LOL !! I get a laugh when these Woodstock commercials come on - they say things like 'dirty hippies...'. LOL !!

A little whacky thought but seriously, this could all turn around in an instant to a George Orwell dream/nightmare come true. Most people now have the technology in their homes to convert to this in a heartbeat. Thank G_d we can trust our Gubbermint ! LOL !!

re: #79 Last Mohican
The Firefox browser has an add on/extension available called 'Cool Previews'. Its a link viewer - put your cursor anywhere over a link and the page pops up - no clicking, using the back button etc. Moving the cursor off the margin of the linked page and it disappears - the original page still displayed. Sorry, I can't explain/describe stuff worth a sh*t anymore...anyhow, if you use Firefox and get frustrated with the time you waste clicking on bogus links, this little program (?) is invaluable.Fast, fast, fast. And you can tailor it to work in several different ways. I LOVE it ! Can't imagine browsing with out it.
