Sanford: God Wants Me to Be Governor

Politics • Views: 13,457

Philandering creationist governor Mark Sanford now says he’s being persecuted just like Sarah Palin: Sanford: Now I know what Palin felt like.

And he repeated his contention that God put him on Earth to be the governor of South Carolina. Sanford didn’t mention if God also planned for him to sneak off to Argentina and party with his mistress at taxpayers’ expense.

Sanford also told the Times that he is committed to staying in office to fight for his conservative, small-government beliefs because it’s what God put him on earth to do. The embattled governor has long sparred with Republicans in the legislature on matters of government spending.

“I feel absolutely committed to the cause, to what God wanted me to do with my life,” he said. “I have got this blessing of being engaged in a fight for liberty, which is constantly being threatened.”

Dear Gov.

I just spoke to God, and unfortunatetly for you, HE doesn;t seem to be a registered voter in the State Of South Carolina.

But He did say "Me Bless" if thats any consolation!

I'll be moving back to SC later this year or early next year...I'm weary of this twit.

9 Honorary Yooper  Wed, Sep 2, 2009 9:03:04am

If Sanford is thinking this way, maybe a padded room should be his next stop after leaving the governor's mansion. God cares not who is or isn't governor of South Carolina.

31 MandyManners  Wed, Sep 2, 2009 9:07:22am
In Alaska, any individual citizen can file an ethics complaint against the governor – a scenario that allowed political critics in the state to deluge the governor's office with accusations. But in South Carolina, the state Ethics Commission probe was called for by multiple high-ranking elected officials in Sanford's own party, and the governor has agreed to make the proceedings of the probe open to the public.

Does this mean that citizens cannot file such complaints in S.C.?

Sanford is wrong. He doesn't know what G-d wants him to do because G-d told ME what to do. And G-d told ME that Sanford should go*

How about those apples.

*Okay, I stretched things a bit. G-d didn't speak to me deep inside my Zionist compound in the NYC metro area. I saw the violation of his marital bonds with his wife - the adultery (a violation of the Ten Commandments btw), and the political mess ensuing from possibly using government funds to aid his adultery and determined that his asinine behavior cannot be tolerated. He's a political disaster. He's a dead-man-walking, and worst of all, he thinks religious zeal will save him from that fate. All he's doing is giving ammunition to his opposition - whether it's moderates in the GOP or the Democrats in general, and he will be sent packing when election day comes.

re: #18 BlueCanuck

I wonder if any one has hit him yet with the 10 commandments? I think he's broken a few of those.

Let's see...

You shall not commit adultery.
He's definately broken that one.

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
He's lied several times over this affair.

You shall not steal.
He's stolen from the people of South Carolina (fuel, time).

And with this latest nonsense, he's broken this one,
You shall not make wrongful use of the name of your God.
Claiming that God wants him to be governor definately violates this one.

Well, governor, I've consulted some of the gods I know and they say the following:
Allah says it's ok with him, especially since you only have one wife to cheat on and she's nearly as old as you are anyway.
Cthulhu orders you to bite me.
Odin calls for a virgin sacrifice if you can find one, and pronounces a curse on your barley crop if you can't.
Zeus was laughing too hard to say much.
Aphodite says no, you cannot have her phone number.
Jesus said something about cleansing the temple.

As Charles has noted, the top people in the G.O.P. that may run for president in 2012 are creationist and use religion for political gain, when we lizards all know that religion is for personal salvation. God's wants you to Gov.?

What does God have to say? The following passage applies specifically to elders in the church, but in general the prinicpal applies to all who profess to be Christian and wish to be in positions of leadership.

1 Timothy 3:2-7
2 Now the overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 4 He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect. 5 (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God's church?) 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. 7 He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil's trap.

Gov. you fail the standard.

“I feel absolutely committed to the cause, to what God wanted me to do with my life.” - Sanford

This is the excellent foppery of the world, that,
when we are sick in fortune, -- often the surfeit
of our own behavior, -- we make guilty of our
disasters the sun, the moon, and the stars: as
if we were villains by necessity; fools by
heavenly compulsion; knaves, thieves, and
treachers, by spherical predominance; drunkards,
liars, and adulterers, by an enforced obedience of
planetary influence; and all that we are evil in,
by a divine thrusting on: an admirable evasion
of whoremaster man, to lay his goatish
disposition to the charge of a star! My
father compounded with my mother under the
dragon's tail; and my nativity was under Ursa
major; so that it follows, I am rough and
lecherous. Tut, I should have been that I am,
had the maidenliest star in the firmament
twinkled on my bastardizing.

In my experience, God is most unlikely to tell someone to do anything that detracts from the character and person of God himself. Such people I have found to be much more concerned with maintaining their opinion of themselves than with finding and following the path that God truly intends for their lives. I am reminded of something that I saw when I was in Israel.

I was at the Kotel (the Western Wall plaza) and I saw a beautiful IDF graduation ceremony. It was at night, there were braziers lit and the soldiers had formed a neat square around the plaza. There was stirring music and all of the pomp and symbolism that would make anyone who loved them have his heart swell with pride, while making any foe realize that these were real soldiers. It was a moving graduation. I was keenly aware that I was safe to study in Jerusalem because of these men and women.

Three black and white wearing religious Jews pushed their way through the neat ranks of the soldiers, and bold as brass walked right through the square to go to the fountains to wash and then to pray at the Wall. Those three were apparently too holy to notice the affront the caused in the soldiers, the officers or their families.

I was furious. I went back to the Yeshiva I was studying at in a very foul mood and was intercepted by one of the rabbis there. He asked me why I was angry and I told him.

He said:

"The biggest impediment to bringing honor, respect and interest in the tradition, is the open sins of the supposedly righteous. This is why public crimes always are treated more strictly than private ones."

I could not agree more.

People like Sanford need to understand that if you talk the talk, and openly identify yourself with a faith, it is doubly imperative that you walk the walk. You are representing more than just yourself.

Odin calls for a virgin sacrifice if you can find one, and pronounces a curse on your barley crop if you can't.

Mark Sanford: spoiled little mommy and daddy's boy. Father was a cardiologist. Raised on the Coosaw Plantation in South Carolina, ocean front home in Lighthouse Point, Florida, and a "40 acre cattle ranch in Delray Beach, Florida."

With an MBA he was trained at Goldman Sachs. He later became a real estate developer, no doubt with the family money, and moved to exclusive Sullivan Island. Later he made it to DC after being elected to congress and voted for the Clinton impeachment finding Clinton's behavior as "reprehensible" and stating, "I think it would be much better for the country and for him personally (to resign). ... I come from the business side. ... If you had a chairman or president in the business world facing these allegations, he'd be gone."

Now he claims that "God wants me to be governor." More than likely his god is reflected back to him in the mirror during his moments of self love. "If you had a governor facing what Bill Clinton faced, he'd be gone." Apparently, this is not the case with the little boy, Mark Sanford.

Yes, that's the story, it's the oven of Achnai debate, I think. One day, I want to write a novel based on it.

Yes, I just looked it up again in my "handy-dandy" online Talmud. I forgot the bit about the walls beginning to cave in. It's a great example of how you can't prove a point by bringing in irrelevant arguments. Of course, the crux of the matter (perhaps not the best metaphor for a Talmudic discussion) is the assertion that the Torah is no longer in heaven, a point which is not well taught but is really essential to grasp if you really want to understand the religion.

In this case yes. Be honest - was the talk about the man's unit, or was it about the horrible injustice he did by obstructing an unrelated case? At the time everyone sure seemed to be talking about Monica.

I am not for anyone cheating on their wives, but the mock affront is not appropriate. No one in America cared about the questionable woman's (in wherever she was) politically funded case nearly as much as salacious details from Monica.

The petard is that the law Paula Jones used to put Clinton on the stand where the crimes occurred, was signed by Clinton himself.

It never ceases to amaze me how some people are not subject to the consequences of such actions. Sanford of course could face indictment regarding use of public funds for his adultery involving public funds, use of state aircraft, etc. I'm not really familiar with that however.

Right, but the point of that has a lot more to do with the notion of humans being partners in creation.

The context is that the holidays don't start until the witness see two stars.

It is a call to duty, to one's role in creation. It is not meant as a challenge to G-d's authority, or a case of rabbinic hubris.

Interesting, I never learned that when the passage was taught to me.

I forget the details of the actual debate between Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Joshua.

The point of the passage though and of the Bas Kol and of the prophet Elijah laughing though is precisely though the case that is made about the calendar.

Man is supposed to be a partner in creation and to fill a certain role in the Tradition.

The Sanhedrim was, in the tradition, the lineage (master to student) of the seventy elders. The statement is not that the Sanhedrin supersedes G-d at all, but rather that the Elders are given some measure of authority in certain matters from G-d. The walls also stop bending in honor of Rabbi Joshua's arguments - which are accepted by the majority.

Again, the legal principle that applies is the notion that the holidays do not start or stop without the witnesses.

re: #41 Honorary Yooper

Let's see...

You shall not commit adultery.
He's definately broken that one.

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
He's lied several times over this affair.

You shall not steal.
He's stolen from the people of South Carolina (fuel, time).

And with this latest nonsense, he's broken this one,
You shall not make wrongful use of the name of your God.
Claiming that God wants him to be governor definately violates this one.

I count four at a minimum.

To be fair, lying about the affair is not "bearing false witness." He isn't testifying against somebody for the purpose of framing them. His lies do not serve to tarnish the name and reputation of another. So, we're down to three broken commandments.

Maybe two, if he's sincerely deluded about God wanting him to be governor.

This is very subtle, and I'll have to go and study, as enjoined by Hillel. I did understand, though, that there is no precedent for arguing that the Sanhedrin could supersede God. In fact, are there not Talmudic discussions as to what had to be done if the Sanhedrin made a mistaken ruling? Perhaps the most famous incident is the story of Kamtza and bar-Kamtza. Interesting the way it was reported here:

Sanford says he told 'a little white lie;' God is on his side

Gov. Mark Sanford says he told "a little white lie" to his staff to conceal his secret trip to Argentina in June to visit his lover. The governor also says God is on his side, and he has no intentions of resigning.

Sanford, in an interview published Tuesday in The Washington Times, said he is disappointed no House Republicans offered to support his bid to save his job in a meeting last week in Myrtle Beach.

I wonder if "a little white lie" is a direct quote.

Absolutely,

You just reminded my of R. Tarfon - "There goes your donkey!"

You are certainly correct that the Torah was given to us here in this world and that we are supposed to actively use it and engage it. The meme of partners in creation does not take away from your arguments. It actually adds to them.

My goal in saying a little more about this was for those lizards who are not Jewish and might misunderstand what you wrote, and think that Judaism gives itself the right to make things up as we go along. We absolutely do not. The subtlety l;ies in what actions we are commanded to take which fill roles of judgment and creation. In a real sense, according to tradition, the witnesses bring the holiday into being - but this is what they are commanded to do.

The big (false) theological claim that Islam makes against us (and Christianity) is that we perverted the original message by making things up - thus (Mohammed was needed to correct us and the Christians).

I was just looking at the unemployment rate for South Carolina which stands at 11.8 percent. He's not only a fool but he's not doing a very good job as governor. During this time Sanford spent “the last 5 days crying in Argentina,” which is an actual quote.

Did you notice the rambling of his speech? The bowed head and quick if not complete lack of eye contact with the audience in that video? I sincerely hope this man is ousted from the governorship of South Carolina because he is not worthy to hold that office.

Sorry, but you are wrong in this matter.
Unlike other states, Alaska's governor has no legal counsel's office to defend the governor from allegations brought against the governor in her official capacity.
