Olbermann Declares War on Glenn Beck and Roger Ailes

Politics • Views: 3,563

Uh oh.

Responding to Glenn Beck’s Twitter call for his followers to dig up all the dirt they can find on Obama officials, Keith Olbermann is calling for all the dirt on Glenn Beck.

I don’t know why I’ve got this phrasing in my head, but: Find everything you can about Glenn Beck, Stu Burguiere, and Roger Ailes. …

Tuesday we will expand this to the television audience and have a dedicated email address to accept leads, tips, contacts, on Beck, his radio producer Burguiere, and the chief of his tv enablers, Ailes (even though Ailes’ power was desperately undercut when he failed to pull off his phony “truce” push).

Doesn't this moron have the staff of a TV show to do this research.

(BTW, this moron could be either Olbermann or Beck.)

I advocate the Sambo Option: staying on top of the palm tree and watching while the tigers chase each other round and round the tree until they turn to butter.

The tiger is too noble. Butter is too pure. Let them chase until they turn into some generic brand of margarine.

Media war! Pass out the popcorn!!

It's a cutthroat business and the goofy, overblown narcissist Olbermann sees an opportunity in the widespread outrage over the batshit crazy Beck, just as the latter sees an opportunity in the historically under-served (by the MSM) kook conspiracy market.

It would all be very familiar to those who witnessed the Hearst/Pulitzer circulation wars of the 1890s, a competition that eventually managed to incite an actual war against a friendly country, Spain.

24 Big Steve  Sun, Sep 6, 2009 2:16:57pm

Frankly...if you want to make Beck look bad...the clip Charles posted a month or so ago of him caught in a dead lie on "The View" is a great place to start.

Hmmm... comparing the top Democrat in the nation and the President of the United States, whose background still has gaping holes in history and in-depth investigation because the media chose to overlook all possible questionable associations and decided that he was the Chosen One, and Glenn Beck, whose opinions are his own and has a listen show on cable tv.

Yeah, that's a great comparison there Olbermann.

Beck is a maroon, a loon, and happened to latch on to a problem with Van Jones, that turned out to be the least of his troubles (the junk science and radical left/pro-cop killer tendencies rate higher than his trooferisms). He's loud, obnoxious, and doesn't speak for the GOP.

Obama does.

And it's not like Olbermann is one to throw stones here either. He's got a skeleton or dozen in his closet, because he's deep and not playable.

In all seriousness though, I think there is a difference between government officials and people in the "press" or entertainment industry. If Keith wants to go after Republicans, fair game, going after Beck et al, I think may bother me, just the same as an "investigation" into Olbermann would bother me. What Keith wants to do is eerily reminiscent of McCarthyism.

I confess to signing one, but that's for some publisher to pick up a Wii game in Japan for localization. Other petitions involve calling for Blizzard to restore LAN play to its upcoming Starcraft sequels and Valve to make good on its claims of new content for the original Left 4 Dead before releasing the new one. None of them have much chance of working, and those are for comparatively trivial things. If you think world leaders will read online petitions for world peace and whatnot and listen to them, I laugh at you.

Or maybe of the time Larry Flynt put out a million dollar bounty on the heads of the Republicans in the U.S. Congress for evidence that they had committed adultery in response to the Clinton impeachment effort. He flushed out a few adulteries, IIRC.

This could get ugly. You can always count on Beck and Olberman to hurl the mud in the most offensive way possible.

The Weavers: Good Night, Irene

(there's a link to Leadbelly's version in the lower-right window)

271 Diego  Sun, Sep 6, 2009 3:16:55pm

Fox News viewers overwhelmingly misinformed about health care reform proposals.

Last night, NBC News and the Wall Street Journal released a poll showing that “all the misinformation out there” about health care reform proposals in Congress is taking root with many Americans. For instance, 45 percent believe the false claim that legislation includes “death panels” while 55 percent believe the false claim that coverage will be extended to illegal immigrants. MSNBC’s First Read notes that self-identified viewers of Fox News are disproportionately misinformed:

Here’s another way to look at the misinformation: In our poll, 72% of self-identified FOX News viewers believe the health-care plan will give coverage to illegal immigrants, 79% of them say it will lead to a government takeover, 69% think that it will use taxpayer dollars to pay for abortions, and 75% believe that it will allow the government to make decisions about when to stop providing care for the elderly. But it would be incorrect to suggest that this is ONLY coming from conservative viewers who tune in to FOX. In fact, 41% of CNN/MSNBC viewers believe the misinformation about illegal immigrants, 39% believe the government takeover stuff, 40% believe the abortion misperception, and 30% believe the stuff about pulling the plug on grandma. What’s more, a good chunk of folks who get their news from broadcast TV (NBC, ABC, CBS) believe these things, too. This is about credible messengers using the media to get some of this misinformation out there, not as much about the filter itself. These numbers should worry Democratic operatives, as well as the news media that have been covering this story.

As ThinkProgress has pointed out, Fox News regularly distorts the truth about health care reform. Last week, Media Matters found that over a two day period opponents of health care reform outnumbered supporters by a 6-to-1 margin on Fox.

Depending on which version of the health care "reform" proposals you choose to select, the story is accurate-- or not. There's definitely "misinformation" out there, but there's also no "norm" yet-- no single version of the proposed legislation to analyze. That's why, under Obama's mismanagement and lack of leadership, we have a shell game going on with the different versions of the legislation.

The Slate article makes it really clear that Gore may have mentioned Willie Horton first, but it was not part of an attempt to inject race into the campaign.

That distinction belongs to the GOP.

Right it was Roger Aisles, Lee Atwater, et al that were behind the ad campaign:

Republicans would pick up the Horton issue after Dukakis clinched the nomination. In June 1988, Republican candidate George H.W. Bush seized on the Horton case, bringing it up repeatedly in campaign speeches. Bush's campaign manager, Lee Atwater, predicted that "by the time this election is over, Willie Horton will be a household name." Media consultant Roger Ailes remarked "the only question is whether we depict Willie Horton with a knife in his hand or without it.">Republicans would pick up the Horton issue after Dukakis clinched the nomination. Roger Aisles mentioned in this NY Times article:

Campaign Trail; A Beloved Mug Shot For the Bush Forces

Governor Dukakis has been portrayed by Mr. Bush as soft on crime. (Mr. Ailes, who has been known to go for the jugular, has said, ''The only question is whether we depict Willie Horton with a knife in his hand or without it.'') And Mr. Goodin said: ''I found myself talking about this guy every day. Reporters calling with questions. I said I wonder what he looks like. Somebody gave me this mug shot.'' Perhaps there's another motive for pinning up the mug shot.

They'll wand your cast and hopefully, you will be treated respectfully and get to cut in line. If you have metal pins in a break, it is a good idea to have a note from your dr, in case there is a not-so-bright TSA person or broken machine.
Do NOT pack anything thing in checked luggage that you absolutely need at your destination, because unfortunately, you can not be sure it will be there. In general, TSA is much more relaxed than they have been in the past re liquids, gels, and that damn plastic envelope. But don't count on it, have it handy in case. Security may be tighter this weekend (and all week) due to 9-11 anniversary issues , depending on the airport.
Try to pick up as many toiletries, etc, at your destination as you can. If you have your own wheelchair, make sure they put it on board at the last minute... if not, make sure the airline calls ahead to meet you with one.
Congratulations... have fun. I'm flying to a wedding this week as well.

But the point is that people are being told that, under the proposals, illegal aliens will get 'free' health care. That is not in any of the proposals.

And to answer you: how does an illegal alien get on the tax rolls? You can't join the public option, even though you pay for it, without being on the tax rolls. ie: nothing to do with health care, everything to do with catching people with fake SS numbers and work permits.

Then how will their emergency care be paid for? It is my understanding that currently much of this is paid for by public funds. If that continues, and much more of people's health care is going to be paid for by public funds under "reform," how are illegals "not being covered?"

The left believes that because they didn't insert any provisions stating Illegal aliens will be incorporated into the system they can claim they are not included as the "truth".

341 quickjustice  Sun, Sep 6, 2009 3:33:19pm

re: #302 Diego

To refresh your defective memory, I will remind you that Hillary Clinton assembled a health care task force that put together her health care "plan" in secret at Jackson Hole, Wyoming in violation of federal law. Her "plan" was more than 1000 pages long. Adversaries pounced on it, but no one can accuse Hillary of hiding the eventual proposal. What you CAN accuse Hillary of is excluding physicians from the task force, because she thought that doctors were the reason costs were skyrocketing.

Two defective strategies. President Obama left it to Congress to come up with different versions of health care reform, while he campaigned for them all. He should have told Congress and the American people the principles the legislation had to embody in very simple language, and he should have told the American people the truth. You can't cut health care costs without shrinking the programs or rationing.

Back when The Sound of Music was first released, Chicago was inundated by a huge die-off of small fish called alewives. They were scooping them up from the beaches with bulldozers.

So, naturally, it became popular to sing,

Alewives, alewives
Every morning you greet me...

Sick. Funny but, sick.

I don't know if ties to Birchers would damage Beck- I wonder if folks even really have an idea of what the issue is with JBS as it is.

Well, given how his association with Ron Paul (one of the heros of the JBS) has apparently enhanced his position, I doubt if Beck being associated with the JBS would do any damage.

Beck wrote the forward in a reprint of one of Skousen's books, and then distributed the books!

That deals with affordability credits and there is no provisions for citizenship verification.

But the public option isn't free. If they do join, they'll still have to pay, and they'll need a SSN. That isn't a health care issue, it's an immigration issue. Might just as well be asking how health care reform will stop illegal aliens from taking store credit and paying it.

Lizards..Since I've been up before the dawn watching sports and posting here. There is a song that just really moves me today on this Holiday.
Please allow me with your grace in this moment in time
***
Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Baby I have been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you.
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

There was a time you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light
In every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Yes, it's having a huge impact right now. Two problems, different solutions.

Immigration reform is needed, not just health care reform,. But while they overlap, they are separate issues.

But the biggest reform is for those who HAVE insurance, not those who don't, in that it will stop many of the abuses in the system as it is now such as dropping people for getting sick, dropping people with pre-existing conditions, dropping people when they leave/change jobs, outrageous co-pays, yearly/lifetime caps, etc, etc.

Yes, it is. If Obama wants to reform the health insurance system he should propose allowing any health insurance company to sell policies anywhere in the United States.

Which would not cost the taxpayers one cent.

But then, it wold not give him the control of people's lives he seeks.

Perhaps also proposing "Loser Pays" for tort reform as well ? That would also bring down the cost of health insurance...

More options? In what parallel universe?

The only way to increase options through government intervention is through the process of deregulation. When the government takes it upon themselves to heavily regulate any industry, prices go up, choices go down and quality suffers.

No, it will not. It will give you more options, not less.

Yes, in the beginning it will give you more options.
Think of that situation as one where a child asks his parents for a pet. The parents suggest a dog, a cat, a bird, a turtle, a mouse, and a rabbit.
The child asks for a lion. That, too, initially increases the options. But, alas, that one will devour the consumer.

So you want LESS regulation? How much less could you get, and what good would it do you? Obama is suggesting a minimum of care which must be met for an insurance program to be offered in the exchange. Yes it is. Businesses that don't meet a minimum requirement of coverage will be forced to purchase the public option under the current house plan. Non covered individuals will be forced to purchase the public option. The public option will be funded with tax payer dollars thus limiting the cost giving it an unfair price advantage. It will limit options and President Obama admitted as much when he stated clearly that the public option was the first step in socializing medicine.

Also, whether or not illegals will be part of a public option may be yet to be determined, but what is NOT debatable is the fact that they ARE included in the counting of the "40 million uninsured" number constantly hurled around.

However in 1945, Mao had not yet won the Chinese Civl War. I also seem to recall from history that in August 1945 we were still on good terms with the Chairman. In 1944, he offered Twentieth Air Force bases in communist controlled territory to base B-29s for attacks on the Japanese Home Islands.

1) Not at all. If you like what you have, you keep it. Large businesses will not be allowed to drop their current plan and dump employees to the insurance exchange without paying into a fund, in place of the co-coverage which is part of the plans they offer now.

2) Again, not true. The public option will be only one of several packages available on teh exchange. You do not have to choose it.

3) Like the GOP offer of $2500/person, $5005/family?

4) Show me where he has said this please.

1. Not if gov regulations force you to buy a more expensive plan OR the government option. You are being dishonest.
2. Moot point. My argument is that you have a tax funded health plan, it can "compete" with a million insurance co's and as long as the gov regulates what the co's need to provide, and keeps its offering artificially low there is no competition.
3. Makes no sense. A tax break to buy whatever you like, is different than tax money being giving to offset the costs of a specific fund. You really are going to pretend not to understand this?

And I'll say it: We should replace the bankrupt Medicare and Medicaid programs with a flat government grant of cash per adult. Eliminate the employer deduction for health benefit plans above the level of the uniform tax credit. For persons not on Medicare or Medicaid and self-employed, we should provide a uniform tax credit for health savings accounts and catastrophic insurance they choose themselves.

State of WA had 19 companies selling health insurance, and then it put in "reforms" like those being proposed nationally. Now there are 3.

With the govt, in addition, able to mandate what must be in a policy, while "competing" with these companies who must also, by the way, not lose money, this isn't competition at all.

This "competition" meme is the biggest fraud perpetrated on the American people in a long time, and that's saying something!

I'm self employed... I have no health insurance.

I called and asked about private coverage to match the health care I was getting when I worked at my last job...

$1500 per month... I can't afford that.

My wife had to go to the emergency room for elevated blood pressure and extreme headaches a couple of years ago. Four hours later they let her go after running tests and said she was fine... The hospital handed me a $5000 bill and said they'd discount it to $4200 if I paid it then... which I did.

I thought to myself... what happens if my daughter falls down and breaks her arm? $9000 bucks or $7800 if I pay it on the spot? Then you get a doctor bill and a myriad of other bills that come later.

I kinda hope they work something out... my health care plan now is to cross the border into Tijuana and cross my fingers.

557 Dahveed  Sun, Sep 6, 2009 5:10:28pm

In my mind it's misleading to suggest that illegals aren't covered in some way. True, we already pick up that tab, but the myth is that illegals won't be receiving healthcare under the public option. They already receive care by the states and local communities. They just can't enroll in the public option in the federal system. If an illegal is in an emergency situation, the hospitals won't let an illegal die because they can't pay.

So while the poll may suggest that 72% think that illegals are covered when this bill doesn't cover them, they really are covered, just covered elsewhere.

Wouldn't it be great if you could have taken your insurance with you, or were permitted to buy, say, instead of full coverage, coverage for specific types of events? State regulations make that impossible.

Your employer was paying the bulk of the cost of your insurance in lieu of wages. Before I quit and decided to go it alone, I was paying about $750.00 per year for an excellent insurance plan. My employer was paying the other 6K+. I pay less now and the difference is that instead of sending the money to an insurance company, the bulk of it goes into a personal health savings account used to pay medical expenses up to my deductible. I don't "lose" it if I don't use it. It rolls over every year and it's mine.

As far as the person changing your settings - what OS system do you have ? Windows XP and other Microsoft based OS have a 'System Restore' function that lets you return your PC back to an earlier date - prior to the changes. Some virus protection packages have similar (Symantac/Norton 'Go Back' for example).
They don't correct every change made and often don't offer a useful rollback date but it's worth a try...
As far as setting up an e-mail account on your computer as your primary account, Microsoft/Windows OS's come with 'Outlook' and/or 'Outlook Express' programs installed on your PC right out of the box. I've used the 'Express' program for my primary since day one.
Not pushing PC's, MS or Norton here - they're all I'm familiar with...

re: #559 jayzee

And even if you could, how long will our current system run before a total breakdown ? These outrageous prices could only be commanded because of 'Health Insurance'.For years those of us that only had to pay a $10. co-pay or similar didn't realize the balance of our bill, after paying our pittance, was growing increasingly larger and larger every year - we were oblivious and the doctors were collecting huge fees. It was painless. Ditto for medications. If they had to accept a formula much like how a 'prevailing wage' and 'sliding fee' is calculated for the area they practiced in, you might have a chance to pay your bill in 30 days. Its so out of whack now that my co pays are getting hard to handle. Great that a doc can save ones life. No problem that I pay him a bit more than the mechanic, plumber, farmer etc. but where would the doc be if the people he/she depended on to fix his car so he can drive to the hospital to save my life, the plumber to fix his/her drains or the farmer that puts food on his/her table that sustains his/her life all charged $5000.00 a visit or delivery ? Its sooo far out of whack and talking about another 'insurance' plan is putting a finger in the dike (IMHO). 'Insurance', like auto or life have predictable payouts, agreed upon fees etc. The law states that if you pay your monthly health ins. premium, the ins. co. has to pay for whatever the 'doctor orders' - how often/how many ? How do you calculate that so as to sustain a profitable business ? What happened to kids with the urge to help others over the urge to buy summer homes, Mercedes and Porsches ?? If the Gov. is going to pay for anything, I think it should be an eduction that doesn't saddle a prospective young doc with a mountain of college loan debts - use it as an incentive to attract kids into the profession but teach they have a right to a decent living but not wealthy beyond comparison to others doing worth while work. If your doc had to charge based on what the average family could afford, well, the average family could afford health care and the doc could expect to live a bit higher on the hog than the average patient. All moral/ethical issues and I don't believe I have the right (or the business) to say what someone else should be 'allowed' to earn but I think the next generation at least could be taught from an early age the benefits of choosing a profession that helps others in their time of need and maybe something like 'it doesn't mean you should expect to get filthy rich...some of the rewards in life aren't monetary'...and the notion 'how much is your life worth' is down right immoral. Just maybe we'd get kids that want to grow up to help their fellow man and the money being the icing on the cake rather than the other way around. I know that if when I was in school I learned that I could go through med school, no matter what my socio economic circumstances were, I'd certainly consider this a great opportunity. More and more docs are no longer accepting ins. plans. They are getting sick of all the different forms, requirements etc. etc. For what companies pay out the head ache it causes office staff, the delays in payment if one little rule, number etc., gets screwed up by someone in billing - getting too much for many of them (I could tell you stories !). I'm terrible at this blogging thing - in case I'm misunderstood (or ya don't understand me at all LOL) I'm not rail ling against doctors, insurance companies or big pharmaceutical.
It seems to me that when employers/unions began using 'plans' in lieu of salary and then, in return, the unions kept the ball rolling until it became expected that your employer would pay for your families health ins. plan is when things really started getting away from us. When I get one of those 'This Is Not A Bill' letters from my provider I usually don't read past 'this is not a bill' as thats about all I've been concerned with. Part of the problem here too.

571 spiderx  Sun, Sep 6, 2009 8:33:59pm

we have entered an era in politics where the fringe have entered the mainstream. Remember Olbermann back in 06 during a special comment calling Bush a terrorist. That was radical and something you'd expect to hear at democratic underground, certainly not something that should be heard on a national news broadcast.

now we have Glenn Beck who is a dangerous radical that is propagating some of the most extreme views every to be seen on a national broadcast. He is being mainstreamed by FOX news (and CNN when he was employed there)

i can probably count on two hands how many times OLbermann went nuts (two hands too many)

but Glenn Beck goes nuts everyday . His views are truly extreme. Olbermann is not an extremist, he's just a megalomaniacal douche bag.

Neither of these clowns should be newsmen.

# 570 cont.
If the Fed is going to get involved with this plan anyway and billions are to be spent, wouldn't the money be better spent with incentives for young up and comers to specialize in areas where lacking, to locate in areas low on docs/per capita, to provide a 'catastrophic illness' plan only and bring the profession back in line with what people can afford to pay from their paycheck ? Competition usually leads to excellence and lower prices/fees, right ? Minimal regulation to make sure communities are being adequately served and not so over priced that the average person can't afford health care.Tort reform/jury awards issue tackled so the liability/malpractice issue is settled (reasonable). This sounds pie in the sky as it would cause heads to explode in the health care industry and the AMA would go insane at the notion but look where we're heading anyway - the craziness is growing daily as it is. And eventually its going to all crumble anyway when prices are so high the average person, if they're lucky enough to find a 'participating provider', they will no longer be able to afford the 'co-pays'. Having a gov run plan in competition with a private plan ain't gonna work either as the gov can always bail out shortfalls by raising taxes or printing money. Privates do not have this luxury/protection. I remember a time in my life when my parents had to make some hard decisions as to who and when to go to the doctors. Dad/mom were paying straight from the wallet. This can be a problem when talking about putting the transaction back to being between the doctor and the family. Some may ignore symptoms due to $ concerns - the exact opposite of todays parent insisting the kids all be prescribed antibiotics because 'well then, why did i bother making the appointment if your not going to DO something ?' Have heard that plenty. partly the reason we have antibiotic resistant viruses/bacteria. Partly the reason ins. co. are claiming 'we're going broke'. Parents would be less likely;y to run to the doc for every little suspected illness if they had to pay out of pocket/wages. There could be some simple, sane laws protecting children - especially the poor. It would cost but we're talking spending how much anyhow ? These are some things I've been thinking about after a life time of working in the health care field. Obviously I'm not genius and I'm not so delusional to think I have the answer to a monumentally complex problem. Just lookin' for some feedback from others that know what I don't so as to refien what I think the problems/solutions might be. #1 is that 'health insurance' is an illusion and it is not a true 'insurance policy' as say life insurance, with its actuary tables etc., is.
As I understand it: 'We bet, based on our actuary tables, you will live until the ripe old age of 75. At 'x' dollars per month premium, we will collect 'x' amount from you each year until we have to pay out when you reach the ripe old age of 75'. The consumer bets on a hunch that he/she will die prematurely and the company will py out 'x' amount of dollars because I pay them 'x' amount in premiums each month as agreed upon by both parties'.
How the hell is 'health insurance' in any way comparable ? Life insurance companies have a predictable risk. How can a health insurance company claim same and expect to stay in business ? If anyone bothers to read this and can help me out here with some answers I ask only that you respond with kindness - I risked a lot there LOL !!!

What Olbermann does not understand is that Obama is an elected official, and is appointing Czars paid by our tax money, which may be unconstitutional, and Beck is just another hack on TV/radio.

Then we must look at Olbermann's viewers - most sit starry-eyed in front the Gov-TV with their little tinfoil hats sipping cool aide. Who knows what crackpot statements they will send in about Beck, and we know Olbermann will not have verified any of their loony tidbits.

What Olbermann wants is a flame war between him and Glenn Beck to increase his (Olbermann's) ratings. He tried it with O'Reilly and O'Reilly didn't take the bait, but instead directs all of his responses back to the generic "NBC"]." Olbermann thinks that Beck is dumb enough to bite and he is probably right.

Why someone who has a rating of .0001 and 250 viewers at a nest of fool farms is granted any ink by anyone is astounding to me.
Perhaps the gloves can come off of both Beck and Olbermann and they can meet at center ice somewhere without gloves or masks.
Where did Olbermann come from in the first place and why?
Beck, on the other hand, admits imperfections (unlike Squash Limburger and Sad Sean Hannipie).
It is pathetic the state this has come to with Disney, General Electric, Sumner Redstone, Rupert Murdock, fading Time Warner, and their fishwife friend, George Soros, all pretending that we watch their products with anything other than disdain.

re: #572 leftover54

well, the risk is comparable, maybe not on a small scale but on the scale that insurance companies operate on it's all a matter of applying the law of large numbers and a heck of a lot of gathered statistics, applying a safety margin, administrative overhead and a profit margin, and presto.

as for your suggestion of trying to scare doctors out of going for a wealthy lifestyle, well, look at it from the other side. to make that kind of money, they have to be pretty damn good. nothing wrong with idealism (love it, but it's meaningless when it's done just 'cause there's no more profitable alternative) but there's a lot of people who actually work harder and better when it's rewarded (with cash, in this case) directly.

also, it's exactly like you put it. theres huge college loans, and a real risk of just not making it to the end. someone takes that risk, well there *should* be a payoff if he makes it to the end.

and also, it's safe to say someone who does it just for the cash won't ever get into medical practice -- that takes a bit more.

your suggestion scares me. it's a nice fairytale -- sounds positively lovely. but I'd say it would be a complete disaster if implemented.
that said, encouraging doctors to take up practice in less attractive fields or locations might be a good idea.
I don't however recall it being a real problem? is there really a dangerous shortage of specialists or rural doctors? oh well.
