Here’s a thread to discuss President Obama’s Labor Day speech to the AFL-CIO picnic in Cincinnati, now under way…

Wait.

LABOR day?! He’s speaking to the WORKERS? Obviously, it’s another sneaky commie plot! Just look at the hidden commie artwork on the Rockefeller Building — it shows… WORKERS!

We’re doomed.

I've made a horrifying discovery. If you remove every fifth word from Obama's speech, he's actually giving an EXACT DUPLICATE of Joseph Stalin's sekrit 1939 speech. He's clever, all right, but he can't put one over on me!

Well to be clear, he's not speaking to "labor", he's speaking to "Labor", that is to say organized unions, one of his biggest constituencies.

Just like I mentioned yesterday. The MSM will become there next topic of never ending grievances. They'll complain because they didn't cover whatever reasons they wanted them to cover. So the story line becomes: Glenn Beck forces Van Jones to quit. Etc.

Its because the "right wing blogosphere" apparently, is the only group that cares that Obama has staffed his administration with self-proclaimed Communists and Marxists.

The mainstream media apparently doesn't care.

This isn't an indictment of the "Right wing blogosphere" but of the mainstream media. . .which apparently has largely ignored this story until after Van Jones' "resignation".

Gads, what a surprise - they're covering the one aspect of that woeful tale that got the Right all fired up in the first place: the Troofer connection. Which is a demonstrable piece of crap.

As I predicted yesterday, the media will use this angle to hang the Right by it's own nutsack, and not give a single word of coverage to the many cogent and compelling reasons for ousting Jones.

All those hollers of "Woo Hoo! We won!" being tossed around yesterday are ringing awfully hollow.

I have seen criticism of the Big Media for not reporting who Jones was/ what Jones had been saying sooner, the thought being that they could have saved their hero from going through the humiliation of picking him.
When did it get to be the MSM's job to vet?
Interesting thing to come out of this is it looks like Jones was never really Obama's man, he was Michelle's (and Valerie Jarrett's ) pick all along...

Sounds like a fine speech to me, and it's the Right who ultimately ended up looking asinine in all of this.

However, we still must mention- originally the Department of Education sent out lesson plans that would ask the kids how they could "help the President." They changed it.

I could see where that could cause concern that his speech might have bordered on the political, or could suggest an agenda. Remember, the plan was changed after the furor (which I still believe was mis-placed).

Still, politically, it was the wrong move for the Right to lose their shit over this. The administration always seems to "take enough rope" on it's own without making the Right the focus. Best tactic would have been for them to keep their mouths shut.

Al is the average Joe American. You can't call him Joe because 'eoj' doesn't spell anything in English. For proof, look at "Brother Can You Spare A Dime"--Say, don't you remember, they called me Al...

We are going to rob Al by raising his taxes, which is what happens when you stop using child labor and beating up workers with Federal troops when they refuse to go into dangerous coal mines.

Al is the average Joe American. You can't call him Joe because 'eoj' doesn't spell anything in English. For proof, look at "Brother Can You Spare A Dime"--Say, don't you remember, they called me Al...

We are going to rob Al by raising his taxes, which is what happens when you stop using child labor and beating up workers with Federal troops when they refuse to go into dangerous coal mines.

sarc tag right?

I am poking a bit of fun at this thread. If we want to exaggerate the idea that a Labor Day speech makes Obama a sekrit commie. I thought it was appropriate to mention that he plans on flying the State Flag of a communist nation -- on the 60th anniversary of its founding -- at the White House. And that he hired several "czars" that have, at one time, been openly communist, socialist and/or proponents of forced sterilization.

But, of course, that's no cause for concern, because they've all hinted at the possibility that they've given up their radical positions, sort of. //

Obama, the Mortal

By Charles Krauthammer
Friday, September 4, 2009

What happened to President Obama? His wax wings having melted, he is the man who fell to earth. What happened to bring his popularity down further than that of any new president in polling history save Gerald Ford (post-Nixon pardon)?

The conventional wisdom is that Obama made a tactical mistake by farming out his agenda to Congress and allowing himself to be pulled left by the doctrinaire liberals of the Democratic congressional leadership. But the idea of Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi pulling Obama left is quite ridiculous. Where do you think he came from, this friend of Chávista ex-terrorist William Ayers, of PLO apologist Rashid Khalidi, of racialist inciter Jeremiah Wright?

But forget the character witnesses. Just look at Obama's behavior as president, beginning with his first address to Congress. Unbidden, unforced and unpushed by the congressional leadership, Obama gave his most deeply felt vision of America, delivering the boldest social democratic manifesto ever issued by a U.S. president. In American politics, you can't get more left than that speech and still be on the playing field.

In a center-right country, that was problem enough. Obama then compounded it by vastly misreading his mandate. He assumed it was personal. This, after winning by a mere seven points in a year of true economic catastrophe, of an extraordinarily unpopular Republican incumbent, and of a politically weak and unsteady opponent. Nonetheless, Obama imagined that, as Fouad Ajami so brilliantly observed, he had won the kind of banana-republic plebiscite that grants caudillo-like authority to remake everything in one's own image.

Accordingly, Obama unveiled his plans for a grand makeover of the American system, animating that vision by enacting measure after measure that greatly enlarged state power, government spending and national debt. Not surprisingly, these measures engendered powerful popular skepticism that burst into tea-party town-hall resistance.

Obama's reaction to that resistance made things worse. Obama fancies himself tribune of the people, spokesman for the grass roots, harbinger of a new kind of politics from below that would upset the established lobbyist special-interest order of Washington. Yet faced with protests from a real grass-roots movement, his party and his supporters called it a mob -- misinformed, misled, irrational, angry, unhinged, bordering on racist. All this while the administration was cutting backroom deals with every manner of special interest -- from drug companies to auto unions to doctors -- in which favors worth billions were quietly and opaquely exchanged.

"Get out of the way" and "don't do a lot of talking," the great bipartisan scolded opponents whom he blamed for creating the "mess" from which he is merely trying to save us. If only they could see. So with boundless confidence in his own persuasiveness, Obama undertook a summer campaign to enlighten the masses by addressing substantive objections to his reforms.

Things got worse still. With answers so slippery and implausible and, well, fishy, he began jeopardizing the most fundamental asset of any new president -- trust. You can't say that the system is totally broken and in need of radical reconstruction, but nothing will change for you; that Medicare is bankrupting the country, but $500 billion in cuts will have no effect on care; that you will expand coverage while reducing deficits -- and not inspire incredulity and mistrust. When ordinary citizens understand they are being played for fools, they bristle.

After a disastrous summer -- mistaking his mandate, believing his press, centralizing power, governing left, disdaining citizens for (of all things) organizing -- Obama is in trouble.

Reginald, as a new Lizard, permit me to explain.

LGF has two payment plans...

Option one is the Global Hidden Communist Revolutionary Front.

Duties include saying reasonable and factual things about Obama in order to prevent the secret truth of his Marxist agenda from being fully realized. You are to discount all Christians, free-thinking scientists who want the truth of ID revealed in honest debate and most importantly, you are to sing the Internationale loudly in the shower. You are also to support the environment in an effort to cripple the U.S. economy.

This is the "Hippie" plan. It has a hippie payment system. That is, no money, but you have the chance to date cute vegan chicks.

Option two is serving the Zionist Lords Of Remulak.

Here you support the take over of your species by the superior intelligence of Intergalactic Zionism. You do this by eating bagels and watching Sienfeld episodes (if you play them in reverse, you will receive your instructions). You must periodically say BWA HAA HAAA HAAA, and submit to a probe. 1 in 5 does not mind the probe so much.

There is a monthly Zionist paycheck of a nominal amount for basic services rendered. If you excel at your duties you will receive encrypted Matzos which give you opportunities for advancement.

The Zionist plan also give you the chance to date IDF women. IF they like you, you may not be shot for trying to get their attention.

I have no idea. I know I worked at a non-union manufacturing facility where we had hired contractors for the electrical work- from the union. The facility had a strict non-union policy, but if you want electrical work done right- union certification gives that piece of mind. Since they were contracted we bypassed the non-union policy.

It's going to be free free free! Yeaaah! You'll never have to worry about anything again! Yeaaah! Bad memories.

I worked in a federal environment for 20 years where most everyone was unionized although it wasn't mandatory. Folks, you have no idea just how batshit-crazy unions are in this nation nowadays. I actually had a union leader way up on the food chain on a national level tell me flat out one time that life in America wouldn't be fair until 75% of the workers were employed by the federal government. That's a quote. I laughed as I thought he was kidding and he got angry with me. Really angry. He wasn't joking. The discussion got heated and he told me that if I wasn't with the plan, that maybe I should be elsewhere...filled with what Mr. Spock refers to as "colorful metaphors."

It was at that exact moment about 15 years ago that led me to leave all the security and guarantees and invest every cent I had to my name, risk it all, and start my own businesses. I sometimes regret my two decades in that environment and think of it as time wasted, etc., but it worked out for the best in the long run. In fact, I probably wouldn't be having the career I could have only dreamed about 20 years ago had that incident not happened.

Most people, when they want to hire electricians, feel more comfortable going with union certified workers.

Homeowners (most people) hire independent electricians, not big usnion shops to do their home electrical repairs

It was the mechanics and ground crew who wouldn't settle. The pilots didn't exactly help, but they weren't the final straw.
Most of them found out the hard way and went to other airlines. We had a lot of new Eastern and Braniff first officers who had been senior captains... tough lesson to learn.

The China Daily story speaks for itself. The White House will fly the Chinese State Flag on the 60th anniversary of the Communist Revolution there.

Does the USA take a stand for freedom around the world or not? Would Ronald Reagan or John F. Kennedy have flown the Chinese flag at the White House on such an occasion?

225 JHW  Mon, Sep 7, 2009 11:22:04am

There's unions and there's unions. They're not all identical. For about 20 years I worked for a Fortune 500 company (forest products) where there were also were many non-union contractors. We had a fairly good relationship with the corporation. The conflicts would arise when local managers would fool around with the agreements to cut costs, and their doings were many times repudiated by higher level management as counter-productive. Our union came up with a plan that I thought was very innovative. We competed directly with contractors for contracts on the same terms they were offered. Very complex, but labor learned about hidden costs and what it really takes to run a business. It was up to each crew to accept or reject the individual contracts (a contract for each crew and each job) and decide where, if their production merited it, the profits were allocated, i.e. wages or benefits. It was pretty successful, quite a few of our Canadian counterparts came down to study it. It was realized that in the modern world the corporation needed a return on their investment greater than say just sticking it in a bank or buying bonds. About half the crews were able to adapt and compete with all comers, the others took a buyout. And the wages were pretty good for blue collar too, 20-30 an hour in the 80's, and justified by extra production and extra quality. The corporation liked it as they were able to cut direct management and focus more on quality control. Unions are not identical.

Numerous albums, movie soundtracks, big concert schedule - both classical and folkloric. She even plays with a Beatle's cover band for special occasions.

Oh, she went to Eastman for graduate work in music, but also picked up a Master's in Public Policy at UT.

re: #60 astronmr20

There was good reason to object to the lesson plans. That was kind of creepy. But when they removed that part of the idea, the rest of it was unobjectionable.

When you object to something and they hear you and offer the new improved version which isn't really anything to gripe about, the thing to do is say thank you, I appreciate that.

I would think that such a talented and hard working woman would be a success regardless of whether or not she was a union member.

The main purpose of a Union is a good one, negotiating between employers and employees for the benefit of both. The only real problem I have with them is their political activism. The Unions spend scads of their members' money on getting Democrats elected for no discernible benefit.

Interesting though , the rank & file usually split with a large number voting for Republicans. The Leaders can control political cotributions, not the actual vote.

Question: When you are a musician on a recording are you just paid rate or does your agent work it out? Let's say you go on the road..Is that just rate also?

In a studio, you're paid union scale. If you're in demand, you can ask for double or even triple scale and get it.

On the road, you make your own deals.

Unions are good and bad.

They are good because they provide workers an instrument for dealing with management. They look out of the best interests of the workers.

They are bad because sometimes the interest of the workers is harmful to the business. Does anyone here in this blog not think that the auto industry in the USA has not been crippled by the higher wages and benefits secured by the UAW on their behalf.

I know that the management shares the blame. But when the cost of labor starts exceeding every expense and actually makes the company go under, how is that helping the worker or the company?

I didn't think it was creepy, but I didn't like the original lesson plan, the newer version (setting educational goals) does what needs to be done to make sure students take away the "lesson" that they should be working hard in schoo and actually planning for their future education, rather than just leaving it all to chance.

I keep seeing that "the White House" issued that lesson plan; I don't know where it originated, but I would suspect it originated at the Dept of Education, not "the White House".

Totally agree reine. IMO that's symptomatic of the general political climate since at least 2000. There is this idea that the 'other side' is the enemy and must be destroyed.
Destructive for political discourse, and destructive for the country. People on both sides do it, and it's wrong.

Labor Day

Sometimes you can't win.

The wife-woman went down to Arkansas2 to attend the annual end-of-summer fish, ski, boat-ride and competitive beer drinking summit. I think three days alone is just what the doctor ordered and stay home. I overlook the reach of cell phones.

The Godson's wife calls to complain that I didn't come. Says that she misses talking to me. The other boy calls to complain that since I didn't come that he has to clean all the fish himself. Their kids call to ask why I don't like them enough to come see them. People that I don't really even know call to complain that there isn't anyone to calm down Grampa C.

They decide that since I'm too stuck up to come see them, they're coming up to my place to eat all my groceries, drink all my liquor, trash the place and create general mayhem.

Sounds like just another weekend, actually.

Except for the US and Canada, Labor Day is the first of May. The Second International's citing of this event is one of the reasons that May 1 is not celebrated north of the Rio Grande.

Now wait just a minute here. This story was linked on Drudge directly to China Daily. Are you suggesting that the Birchers planted the story there? I have no idea what the Birchers opinion on this is, and neither do I care.

Probably not, not at the height of the cold war, nor would they have visited Vietnam as Bush did, where the Vietnamese flag flew along side the stars and stripes. Things change with the passage of time, I doubt if either of those would have guessed GM sells more Buicks in China than the US, nor that there will soon be more Walmarts in China then here.

re: #330 LudwigVanQuixote

Choices to ignore a Presidential address about staying in school?

Choices about minimum educational standards?

What choices are we talking about?

I've been told that because I opted out of sending my son to the public high school in my town opting to send him to a private one instead I was trying to destroy the pub ed system
This from the same people I would encounter at school baord meetings complaining that classroom size was THE biggest problem in pub ed.

I figured I was doing pub ed a favor! One less kid in the class while they STILL get my property tax monies

Get your hot Rasmussen Poll on Climate Change/Global Warming. Fresh out of the oven. 10 cents a bag. Get 'em while they're hot!

I'd prefer a poll of climate scientists.

re: #35 looking closely

This isn't an indictment of the "Right wing blogosphere" but of the mainstream media. . .which apparently has largely ignored this story until after Van Jones' "resignation".

If the media had fulfilled their responsibility, there wouldn't be a need for talk show hosts to frame the issue.

"Frame the issue" = "whip up the GOP base with loony conspiracy theories and ignorant, deceptive nonsense."

I was about to point out that Ronald Reagan became a registered Republican in 1964, and Charlton Heston became one in 1972.

My image of unions is strikers riding around in the back of pick-up trucks at night holding baseball bats looking for scabs when there was a strike at a dept. store near the restaurant worked at as a kid. That image sticks with me 30 years later.

Most people who work are not members of Labor Union cartels.

 Frank says:

You can tell what they think of our music by the places we are forced to play it in. This looks like a good spot for a livestock show. -- The Mothers of Invention were opening for Cream in April of 1968 in Chicago. The place was very large and did look like it had been used for displays of cattle and other such animals.
