Laura Bush: Please Come Down From the Ledge
Oh brother.
How sad and pathetic have things gotten when even Laura Bush has to try to talk the right wing down from the ledge?

It's like a person is a raving lunatic. Hysterical.
And then somebody slaps them across the face and they snap out if it.

It's not sad or strange. Laura Bush is a teacher and has always been a big believer in reaching out to students... her theme for the eight years was literacy.
She's also a lady, and won't say anything bad about a sitting president or diss her predecessor. Too bad she won't be shown the same courtesy by the Dems.
(Charles... that Goth Scene dating ad is...scary)

Laura said..
Part of the reason for the polarization, she said, was the increase in the number of congressional districts dominated by either strongly conservative or liberal voters.
Isn't gerrymandering supposed to prevent that? Carve up the districts so your side has some minimum advantage in as many districts as possible to win the most seats possible, and not to waste all those votes in just one district.

The problem with that is such an approach takes discipline. People like Glen Beck and Ron Paul would much prefer to just spout inane babble. They garner loyal followers and they don't have any real accountability. Buffoons.

Those on the right who ' are mad Obama is President' will just have to get over themselves. His real problem is that there are a lot of conservatives who desperately wanted (and still want ) for him to do well, and hoped against hope that he would not do what he has done, which is pull a bait and switch.
He is my president, for better or worse, so I hope it's for better. Not every Republican wants him to fail. Hoping he doesn't get some of his more radical programs shoved through is not hoping that he is a personal failure.
I am finding this whole school speech thing a huge distraction from more serious problems, and actually, that is probably just fine with Axelrod and Rahmbo.

The problem is that the official party organs haven't done anything of note since the election. There has been not party strategy, and people like Beck have stepped in to fill the gap. With Congress back in session this week, the GOP leadership needs to step in and take charge. Now is the time to inject some sanity into the party. Thank you, Laura for helping with that process.

I want the USA to succeed. I want our economy to get better and I want everyone to do well. I just think that President Obama is taking us down the wrong road. I hope his plans for healthcare do not make it. I hope Cap and Trade is dropped for something better. I hope he reconsiders his stance on many issues.
It does not mean I hate him. But to say I should wish him success is not my duty. I do hope he gets it right, no matter what the problem is.

I think the Republicans are going to have to co-opt the old slogan ' I'm not a member of any organized political party... I'm a democrat '. It's starting to apply.
That's always been one of my big problems with the democrats... they are such a motley cabal of special interest groups, each insisting on special treatment. I hate to see the Republican party end up the same sorry way.
58 | Ziggy Mon, Sep 7, 2009 7:33:41pm |
I shouldn't start because it's past my bed time and the misses is probably done waiting for me, but...the problem, for me at least, wasn't the speech. It was the learning activities that were wrapped around it. The speech is fine and not inappropriate (albeit a bit self centered and at times dwelled on the negative). What on gods green earth were they thinking with that? Oh, that's right, they weren't thinking.

In that case we would have to look at the current GOP leadership: Sen. Mitch McConnell -- Senate Minority Leader and Rep. John Boehner -- House Minority Leader. Boehner has tendency to hold back in press conferences while McConnell tend to mumble (he also is no stranger to adding pork).
They return tomorrow and even though I can't really tell the GOP what to do they should at least take Laura Bush's lead in this matter. She strikes a good balance in this issue. Otherwise, the official GOP has been somewhat silent on this issue which is a good thing. Otherwise, the de facto "leadership" coming from the "conservative" pundits has been counterproductive.

I always thought Laura Bush's "handlers" during the campaign must have LOVED her. She is a naturally gracious lady and isn't going to be spouting off and getting GWB in trouble. I don't think that can be said about all politicians' wives.
Laura Bush is a former first lady and knows how to act like one should.
Besides, she has always seemed like a very warm, decent and forgiving person - otherwise she could have called Dubya out more than once on his shortcomings.
The kindly Mrs. Bush's graciousness about Pres. Obama is therefore not evidence that he is or is not a socialist.

Nah, her husband was a RINO (Republican In National Office). I really did think #5 was a joke, since it is the standard epithet of the nutfringe. Btw, they show their ignorance of the Republican heritage when they reject the GOP credentials of anyone who is not affiliated with the religious right and Bircher conspira-kooks.
I wonder if the actual leadership of the GOP (as opposed to self-appointed media) is testing the waters for a confrontation with the kooks. Who better to do this than a former First Lady, someone respected and prominent but with no official constituency and therefore no base to appease?

I have two High school age sons. Asked them at dinner if the local high school was going to show the speech tomorrow. They said they were (to my surprise because I heard they weren't...oh well). Anyway, my older son said some of his friends were going to boycott and he told them they were idiots because every minute spent listening to Obama was one less minute in class. So basically in typical teenage fashion, they see this as a skip time so I don't think we have to worry too much about brainwashing.

181 | Racer X Mon, Sep 7, 2009 8:19:05pm |
Received via email. Not sure how true any of this is.
Harry Truman was a different kind of President. He probably made as many important decisions regarding our nation's history as any of the other 42 Presidents. However, a measure of his greatness may rest on what he did after he left the White House.
The only asset he had when he died was the house he lived in, which was in Independence Missouri. His wife had inherited the house from her mother and other than their years in the White House, they lived their entire lives there.
When he retired from office in 1952, his income was a U.S. Army pension reported to have been $13,507.72 a year. Congress, noting that he was paying for his stamps and personally licking them, granted him an 'allowance' and, later, a retroactive pension of $25,000 per year..
After President Eisenhower was inaugurated, Harry and Bess drove home to Missouri by themselves. There were no Secret Service following them.
When offered corporate positions at large salaries, he declined, stating, "You don't want me. You want the office of the President, and that doesn't belong to me. It belongs to the American people and it's not for sale."
Even later, on May 6, 1971, when Congress was preparing to award him the Medal of Honor on his 87th birthday, he refused to accept it, writing, "I don't consider that I have done anything which should be the reason for any award, Congressional or otherwise."
As president he paid for all of his own travel expenses and food.
Modern politicians have found a new level of success in cashing in on the Presidency, resulting in untold wealth. Today, many in Congress also have found a way to become quite wealthy while enjoying the fruits of their offices.
Good old Harry Truman was correct when he observed, "My choices in life were either to be a piano player in a whore house or a politician. And to tell the truth, there's hardly any difference!"
I say dig him up and clone him!!

I was mistaken when I said there were no moonbats here at the family reunion preceding my son's wedding. My moonbat sister isn't here (not that I expected her to attend) but my son, not the one who is getting married, but the one from Moscow who worked on the Obama campaign, is acting very moonbatty.
He gave me a copy of Corsi's book and told me I would enjoy it. I said "I thought you liked Obama!" He said, "I do, but I know you don't." I said I don't like Corsi even more.
However my son is a big practical joker and I suspect he is pulling my leg. He also started a scholarly discussion at the dinner table, on the topic of evolution, taking both sides just to get everyone all riled up, which ended up with everybody screaming and yelling and my son laughing like a jackass.
He was enjoying the hell out of himself.
What fun is a rational, scholarly discussion at the family dinner table that doesn't end in screaming and yelling?

I liked the way her daughters wrote letters to the Obama daughters. I don't know the entire story on how that came about, but I would bet Laura had a hand in it.
I think the Bush twins actually showed the Obama girls around the White House, IIRC. I thought that must have been exciting for them, having grown-up ladies paying attention to them.

I know lots of people who've met George W, and never met anyone who didn't like him after meeting him either.
Dem rhetoric aside, he's a very personable guy with tons of friends. It's one reason why he was so serene about leaving the WH, unlike a lot of other ex presidents: he had an actual life outside of Washington to resume.

Florida Republican Marco Rubio calls for the GOP to get even more crazy:
[Link: www.theledger.com...]
Rubio is a creationist who is pushing to sneak it into Florida's schools.
Of course.
He's functionally illiterate too:
"
Republicans are looking for someone to stand up to the most radical voice in Washington in American history, someone who is credible to Republican principles, and someone who understands that the Republicans of Florida are the natural home of alternative policies that are closer to what the country wants," he said in his Ledger interview.
One might be credible to Republicans, but principles are an abstraction and are not capable of belief one way or the other. And how are "Republicans of Florida" (people, human beings etc) be a natural home to these "alternative policies." Does he see these policies as parasites, infesting the good folk of the GOP?

His popularity is not plummeting, it's down from the unsustainable 60's, but right in line with most POTUS's after the honeymoon. The economy is better, but far from good. i.e. the market is up over 50%, home sales are turning around, job looses are down from 700K/month to around 200K. She proved herself thin-skinned, prone to exaggeration (Letterman, death panels), and quit her term as governor with a speech that could be kindly described as rambling. I had Scarborough pegged as a reasonable man. Why would he hang with that son of a bitch Buchanan one wonders.
275 | Arbalest Mon, Sep 7, 2009 8:54:36pm |
If you remember Scarborough’s and Kress on Congress Avenue, then you very likely heard former First Lady Laura Bush’s words slightly differently.
She notes that No Child Left Behind is still approved, and that the major problem many parents had with Obama’s speech were the guidelines. And, as she notes, the original guidelines were rescinded. At this point, the thought might come to mind. “what were the original guidelines, that caused parents to object?”
Her later comment, that it is important to respect the president, might remind listeners of the degree of respect her husband received. And at about the 5:00 mark, when the criticism question comes up, Mrs. Bush will not answer, nor later give advice.
Mrs. Bush’s later comments about bipartisanship seem to be directed at everyone. She recalls how (at the time Governor) Bush was able to work with Democratic legislators in the Texas Legislature, but later, those in Washington refused. It was a rough 8 years. President Obama now seems to have a similar problem.
Could Mrs. Bush actually mean that bipartisan legislation is foreign to Washington. Perhaps she means that both sides have to legislate together, not exclude one side and try to ram bill through Congress unread. I think she is speaking, a bit obliquely, to everyone.

Letterman's joke was in poor taste. It wasn't even remotely funny, even if he'd referred to the right daughter. I'm not in disagreement about that. It was plain stupid and tasteless.
However, Palin ran with that to say that Letterman was advocating this baseball player to rape her underage daughter, when clearly that was not what he meant.
It was 100% stupid, any way you cut it. He apologized, she said he was advocating rape of a minor. Yes, that's exaggerating. A lot.

I don't think he can take it as well as he dishes it out. But, you never know. Drunk with power and full of confidence...he might survive it all. I think he is one show away from getting yanked. He brings in the viewers, no doubt, but he is also crazy.
His books are not really that bad, a little kookiness, but that is what I cannot understand. He comes across as rational, but when you see him on TV, it's like someone else.

The exaggeration was completely deliberate. Palin doesn't care about credibility -- she's going for the red meat base, and that's why she flat-out lied about what Letterman said.

I don't think any Republican had a chance to win last election. People grew weary of GWB. The Republicans had control of the Congress for many years and blew it, bad. The pendulum swings back and forth in the country and has for 200+ years. Right now, it's the Dems turn. People will get sick of them and their policies and vote in a Republican. It has always been this way in the USA. There will probably never be an unending majority for either party. We are spilt 4 ways here: Left, Right, left-center and right-center. The left and the right are already spoken for. The center people are the ones that can't make up their minds.

It comes from the left, so it must be a blatant lie.

I swear, sometimes I think those on the left could get everything they desire, handed to them on a silver-fucking-platter even, if they just retooled their strategy a little.
All they would have to do is express a position on any given issue that is the exact opposite of what they actually want, and their opponents on the right would trip over each other to give them exactly what they want.

I think something must have happened to him in the past few years... I saw him at a live show two years ago, and he was totally hilarious and quite sane... very funny and not at all like he is today. The shows were selling out, and for good reason, it was a great act. He went heavy on satirical social commentary, less specifically political , but he was quite good natured and not at all wild eyed. Not even close to tears once.

Just had someone actually deny that CO2 is a greenhouse gas -- when there is absolutely no doubt whatsoever that it IS. The science behind that is completely solid and has been for many years.

I know. Which is why I always point people to the AIP website, so they can read that the issue of CO2 absorbing IR radiation was discussed a century ago.
Also, since I feel that most of the combat over the issue isn't really about science I am now putting many of the links, when I put them in the spin-offs, into the "culture" category as I feel what we are seeing is just a new version of the culture wars.
What I personally find disheartening is that so many of the people who like to dismiss the idea of AGW never really take the time to investigate the real science sources.

I think Michelle Obama usually looks okay, but you would never have caught Laura Bush going to the corner grocery, much less going out sightseeing in England, in this get up..

Democracy! Abraham Lincoln! Oliver Stone!
Chavez also said his democratic credentials remained intact despite concerns over moves to crack down on the independent media and political opposition.Thousands of people took to the streets of Caracas over the weekend to voice their opposition to the president, who has been in power for a decade and says he needs another 10 years to pursue his socialist reforms.
"In Venezuela, no television channel has been closed despite the fact that in many cases the television channels supported a coup d'etat," he said.
"Noam Chomsky ... was asked in an interview what would happen if Fox News or CNN had supported a coup against a president. Chomsky replied that not only would those channels have been closed, but their owners would have been sent to the electric chair.

Ooh, someone doesn't like me at Marc Cooper's site:
LGF has basically gone from dishonestly focusing on extreme nutbars on the left as if they are representative of most liberals to dishonestly focusing on focusing on extreme nutbars on the right to smear conservatives, using the usual rhetoric about “taints”, guilt by association and “not doing enough to distance yourself from them”. It’s tedious either way and attempts to substitute ritualised shunning as a substitute for debate.
Charles Johnson is only a “centrist” in the sense that the people he is prepared to respectfully disagree with inhabit the region plus or minus 5% from the middle of the ideological spectrum. Everyone else is an “extremist” whose opinions are beyond the pale and should not be dignified with a response etc etc. How boring. This is why meaningful political debates no longer happen.

It's a little late at night to start sleuthing, but I can't help but note that, in Lucas Smith's Kenyan birth certificate, the dates are in M/D/YYY format, the way we do it in America. However, in Kenya, they use D/M/YYY format.
So maybe he didn't even purchase a forgery in Kenya. Maybe he just typed the thing up himself in his basement.

There are still elder GOP elected officials who haven't drunk the kool-aid. However, whenever they come out these days and try to speak rationally they get hit with "RINO" type of charges. People like Dick Lugar, etc. Gov. Huntsman was another one... and he has been smeared ever since agreeing to take one of the more important ambassadorial positions.

Stay safe! Dogs are good! What else do you do "special" now that you are living in "bear country"? We have snap tight lids on the trash cans, to keep the critters out. No bears here...
Nothing. Snap on lids, but that doesn't stop much from happening, doesn't stop bears from smelling food, and if they want into the cans, they can get in. We are keeping the cans in the driveway now, and not on the porch with the six foot fence, since two weeks ago, a bear simply swiped through two parts of the fence to get to the garbage. I posted pictures on LGF, it was a mess.
I'm safe.
You're right, the best thing is the dogs. And the red heeler has actually chased a bear and was snapping at it's back legs. Bear looked at him like "dogs aren't supposed to do that" and ran off.

In the article that World Nut Drooly has debunking it, they show a picture of (possibly if they aren't full of shit that is) a real birth certificate from Kenya from 1961 and it looks nothing like the one they are trying to pass off as real.

Joe Scarborough? Is that a joke???
Never mind, I know it isn't.
Scarborough is a pal of Pat Buchanan's.
I just commented to Solomon (Solomonia) yesterday how they all seem to be chummy friends with Pat, Matthews as well... Well he and Pat have a distaste for Israel and anti Iraq war in common...
Let me state clearly -
Pat is nothing more than a barely veiled media brown shirt... it is HIS mission to rewrite the history of Nazi Germany and the racism of the isolationist nazi sympathizers in this country...
While I think he has distaste for the likes of the black community which he roundly criticizes as well... his major distaste and hatred is for the Jewish community... plain and simple... you can go to my site and see the article he wrote hours after the Lebanese PM was murdered by Syria and Hhezbollah...

When President Obama's speech to school children became controversial, the press was quick to remind us that President George H.W. Bush had done the same thing in 1991. What they didn't often mention, however, was the Democrats' reaction. Byron York reminds us:
Democrats, then the majority party in Congress, not only denounced Bush's speech -- they also ordered the General Accounting Office to investigate its production and later summoned top Bush administration officials to Capitol Hill for an extensive hearing on the issue. ...
The day after Bush spoke, the Washington Post published a front-page story suggesting the speech was carefully staged for the president's political benefit. "The White House turned a Northwest Washington junior high classroom into a television studio and its students into props," the Post reported.
With the Post article in hand, Democrats pounced. "The Department of Education should not be producing paid political advertising for the president, it should be helping us to produce smarter students," said Richard Gephardt, then the House Majority Leader. "And the president should be doing more about education than saying, 'Lights, camera, action.'"
Democrats did not stop with words. Rep. William Ford, then chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, ordered the General Accounting Office to investigate the cost and legality of Bush's appearance. On October 17, 1991, Ford summoned then-Education Secretary Lamar Alexander and other top Bush administration officials to testify at a hearing devoted to the speech.
The GAO concluded that Bush's speech was "legal," but that didn't stop the National Education Association from denouncing it.
The controversy eventually died down and seems to have been forgotten, not only by the press that reported it but by the Democrats who denigrate those Republicans who question Obama's speech.

A welcome dose of sanity from Laura Bush, who was always a classy lady.
However, a lot of the partisanship she's complaining about comes from the Democrat party and President Barrack "I Won" Obama. He's about as non-bipartisan a President as I've seen in my life.
