Homing Pigeon Faster Than South Africa's Internet

South Africa's leading Internet service provider is facing some unexpected competition. A financial services company, frustrated with super-slow Internet speed, decided to try a homing pigeon instead. It strapped a memory card to the leg of a bird. By the time it arrived at the data's destination, 50 miles away, the Internet had managed to send only 4 percent of the information.

Not sure if this got picked up yet, but I think, following a charade of a response by Iran, the pig's back in the hanger:

US says 6 nations accept Iran's offer to talk

"Now we are willing to meet with Iran. We hope to meet with Iran," Crowley said. "We want to see serious engagement on the nuclear issue, in particular."

He added, "We are willing to address any other issues that they want to bring to the table. But, clearly, if Iran refuses to negotiate seriously, we — the United States and the international community and the Security Council — can draw conclusions from that. And then based on that, we'll make some judgments in the future."

Change!

Ha! I know precisely how the workers who thought that one up felt.

Except, of course, a homing pigeon wouldn't help my brain.

He's really extended the Brian May "repeats" technique into new territory -- a one artist symphony, that's composed analogue sound repeating instead of the synth digital layering of electronic or trance . I like.

Repost to sharm about SCV

by 2006, however, the SCV had been substantially taken over by an organized cadre of white supremacists (read here for more background) who sought to turn the nation’s oldest Southern historical society into what the veteran white supremacy activist Kirk Lyons called “a modern, 21st century Christian war machine capable of uniting the Confederate community and leading it to ultimate victory,” had seized much of the SCV’s leadership positions, the Southern Poverty Law Center released an extensive list of SCV officials who belonged to “hate groups.”

Damn creepy stuff.

I see the people who really do want "the South to rise again" as a basis for their twisted take on white Christian identity, shouting at our nation's first black president in the context of Christianity.

Yes indeedy, they show patriotism to America by wanting to dissolve the union. They show understanding of American values and notions of liberty, by defining it only for white Christian folks like them - only they are endowed with certain inalienable rights...

It's just the way the Klan thinks, but without the sheets.

It is this meme that the GOP has been banging on so hard.

It is this meme that allows the crazy to resonate do far in the right, and infect so very many people - the meme of fear of losing position to the other. Better to get out while the getting is good and have our own Klanistan they say. The rest of you can have them thar secular darkies for presidents.

It is the absolute most disgraceful meme in American history and it is the reason that I will now almost never vote for any Republican, unless and until the GOP, as a party, completely denounces this evil stuff. Unless and until they denounce it, they make themselves unworthy of my spit.

When the GOP was just throwing out the anti-science bones, I could call it misguided and stupid - even dangerous. However, this is simply evil.

It is against everything I believe in that makes this nation great.

It is evil. Just pure and simple.

In a very different vein, I got to give a presentation today on Dvorak's piano trios, in particular the F minor trio and the Dumky Trio. Really fine pieces of music -- the latter one really begins to push the outside of the "romantic" envelope and in many places sounds more like something from Debussy or even Bartok than a "romantic" composer.

I love having the chance to teach music -- a rare but welcome diversion.

Ever notice that people like 'y0kkles' in the previous thread, who come screeching in demanding that I cover a story, never seem to manage to scrape up the guts to come back and apologize when their assumptions turn out to be wrong?

Whenever someone with strong political beliefs is murdered people assume its because of those beliefs. In the vast majority of those cases it ends up that the murder had nothing to do with that.

May I suggest that Stalin did what he did because he wanted absolute control of a large and very diverse country with a history of warfare?

History is littered with the tens of millions of bodies of people who have fallen to the whims of maniacal egotists. Lust for power isn't a function of religious persuasion.

re: #84 Sharmuta

I posted this last night. I wanted to show you because I think there is a common point with science, racism and religion. For the Christian Identity types- evolution as anti-religion and evolution as pertaining to common origins- would be a two-fer. They just can't have it.

I read through your comment, and in general I had no problem until I came to the closing lines:

It's wrong of course. Part of me also wonders if the fight against evolution goes beyond religion and touches on origins. That in the end, despite our physical differences, we are all one family. Racists can't have that.

To hell with them.

No racists can't have that -- and it is as true for those who would deny that Africans are part of the same "species" as it would for Nation of Islam types who claim that Whites are part of a failed alchemical experiment. But are you trying to say that there is a connection between religious belief and racism? That would be a stretch and incredibly unfair.

In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, religious leaders have been in the forefront of the push for human rights, both here and abroad. To suggest that strong religious belief, which necessarily requires a certain level of intolerance, leads to racism strikes me as a bit too facile. In any event, modern racism is deeply rooted in Hegel's notion of "the other" and its reinterpretation through the lens of Nietzsche (or at least a version of Nietzsche). One doesn't have to be religious to be intolerant, and some of the worst intolerance, at least in modern history, has been justified along secular, rather than religious lines.

I'm not getting it at all...We are hostile to Christians? ( ok maybe the fruitcakes that believe Jesus wants us to Nuke Muslims ...That old chestnut)
I have talked about God since I've been here..I'll pray for someone, a Lizard, A Marine, Our Country, the prayer list, I'll pray for our Souls sometimes and not once has Charles ever gotten upset or downding me..
Yet..Several months ago I read that someone left here because they deeply felt in their heart they had to hid their love for God from Charles..
A Christian never hides their love of Jesus...They live their life on a higher plane... In case your preacher left this out on Sundays.. It's not about you..Nobody hide the Spirit of the Lord in their heart...You lead by example.
I don't really know the Bible but I remember a story about 2 guys..Each given some gift.. One buried it the backyard and was fearful of lose..The other invested it and showed the Lord how he profited his investment many times over...To hide your faith is a major fail...You failed yourself and your faith, ran away and blamed LGF.
/That's all I've got to say about that

HH, I have not noticed hostility to Christians here, either.
Hostility to idiocy in the name of Christianity, yes.

When you're referring to those specific groups -- yes, there probably is a kind of link. Of course, those are the same sorts of people who reject tradition (they would probably not consider someone who went to mass a Christian). Oddly enough, the more traditional the religion (with regards to teaching) the less likely it is to embrace those sorts of extremist positions.

I don't know why we'd be fighting about it as you just agreed there is a likely link between racism and religion concerning evolution for some types of anti-science extremists. Before I found LGF, I would never have guessed there was such a thing as the Christian Identity movement, and I'm well aware they're fringe. I would never tar religion as a whole with the brush used to tar these sick notions. (And yes- Catholics are not Christians to many of these identity types.)

This has been a rough day. That it was 9/11 didn't help. All day long I've been turning over in my mind what the day means; what the event means. I was teaching most of the day, and then had to take part in a hearing that may result in a student's expulsion, which is never a pleasant experience. Then came the interminable meeting of the IT advisory group to set priorities for how we'll spend the budget before it gets cut (new computers for all!). All the while I've been in horrible pain as every place where bone meets bone in my body aches. And the image of clouds of ash have been running like an endless film loop in my head. It made it hard to think about the schedule for new plug-ins on the VOIP system.

What does it take to cross that line? What does it take to cross the line from strongly held beliefs that are life-affirming to having those same beliefs become transformed into justifications for nihilistic destruction? It's probably no surprise that since 9/11 I've spent my time studying witch trials and early modern conspiracy theory. But for all my efforts, I just can't wrap my head around the problem. I am still left gasping for air when I think about it. What does it take to conceive of doing something like that?

Census Bureau severs ties with ACORN in 2010 count
By HOPE YEN (AP) – 16 minutes ago

WASHINGTON — The Census Bureau on Friday severed its ties with ACORN, a community organization that has been hit with Republican accusations of voter-registration fraud.

"We do not come to this decision lightly," Census director Robert Groves wrote in a letter to ACORN, which was obtained by The Associated Press.

In splitting with ACORN, Groves sought to tamp down GOP concerns and negative publicity that the partnership will taint the 2010 head count.

"It is clear that ACORN's affiliation with the 2010 census promotion has caused sufficient concern in the general public, has indeed become a distraction from our mission, and may even become a discouragement to public cooperation, negatively impacting 2010 census efforts," Groves wrote.

Police: Shooting suspect offended by anti-abortion material

Authorities have charged an Owosso, Michigan, man with two counts of first-degree premeditated murder in the Friday shooting deaths of an anti-abortion activist and another man, a prosecutor's office said.

Authorities say the suspect, Harlan James Drake, was offended by anti-abortion material that the activist had displayed across from the school all week.

Fucking kooks on both sides of the issue.

And of course right below that is a link to Texas Gov. Perry sending state troopers (Rangers) to the border...

Now, there has been lots of violence on that part of the border... yet why is Perry doing it now? Is it that the Senate race is heating up (with Hutchison being a strong contender?)

re: #129 Lucius Septimius

Simple. If it were possible for you to remove your brain it would all make sense.

There are people who just wish we'd forget about the whole thing and move on -- it raises too many questions they aren't willing to answer.

As for the kids, they need to know about this, and not in the "oh it was tragic but it was the expected reaction of oppressed peoples" way.

Never forget what happened 8 years ago today.

Remember those poor innocent souls in N.Y., Virginia, and Pennsylvania who were targeted and brutally murdered just because they were Americans.

Remember that there are millions of others out there today who will gladly give their life to take yours in a brutal fashion. They do this because they believe in things you may not, and that angers them. They want to change you, or kill you. They do not care if they die as well in the process. The people that do these things are less than human, less than animal. They are evil - pure and simple.

If good men sit by and do nothing these monsters will gladly strike again. Never let your guard down. Never forget.

And always remember the victims of 9/11/2001.

I'm quite sure those core goals are the primary cause of the high level of discourse between ideas of the right and left on LGF. Committing yourself to a critical analysis of ideas regardless of "politics" is something which garners a great amount of respect.

Wait - they already did that movie. I don't remember the name, but it was a running joke at work about 10 years ago. Made for TV. The "plot," such as it was, involved a train speeding out of control toward (I think) Denver, aided by gravity coming down out of the mountains, and carrying a boatload of toxic chemicals!

And deadly military biological materials, like super-plague!

And - of course - a couple of sections filled with nuclear waste!

I saw a Vermont Royster op-ed decades ago (in the now-defunct Dow Jones weekly named something like "National Enquirer", but not that -- can't recall at the moment.)

The editorial dealt with welfare, and had a classic line. The problem with welfare is like with feeding pigeons in the park. If you stop feeding them, they get really pissed. (That wasn't Royster's choice of word.)

If anyone can give me a lead on how to find it again, I'll be much obliged.

8 arrested at protest outside mosque in London

One person was arrested "to prevent a breach of the peace," police said in a statement. The right-wing demonstration's organizer, Stop Islamisation of Europe (SIOE), said on its Web site one of the demonstration's planners had been arrested.

Seven other people were arrested during the melee for possession of "offensive weapons" -- including bottles of bleach, a hammer and a chisel, police said.

Police said incidents at the scene began when the crowd -- believed to be either members of an anti-fascism group or there to provide support to the Harrow Central Mosque -- went after three youths, "caught up with them, and assaulted them," police said.

None of the murders are excusable. You can tell them to stick that in their pipe and smoke it.

If you're a hermaphrodite and you want to race... which side do you run for?

Oddest damn sports story I think I've ever seen.

You know - I think that is bullshit.

If she is a Hermie - so what?

Where is she supposed to compete?

Is she amped up on drugs? No. She was born configured so that she has higher levels of testosterone than other females? Does that make her a male?

No womb or ovaries? So if you get a hysterectomy are you banned too?

I don't understand this - she had no say in how she was born and how she was configured. If we are going to have separate divisions for men and women on the assumption that women can't compete with the men in these events, then where is she supposed to go?

She deserves our sympathy and support.

Working at the middle school, the kids (probably between the ages of 3-6 when 9/11 occurred) ignored the books the librarian put out on the twin towers. If it not in the here and now, it's not interesting. The teachers weren't too concerned either, more worried about the stuttered video from bo's 9/8 speech.

As I think I posted earlier, our kids were allowed to be out of uniform if they wore 9/11, NYC or American-themed t-shirts. We had references to 9/11 in our usual morning prayer, and then had a moment of silence and more prayer later in the morning. Flags at half-mast outside. It was a nice day. I wasn't sure about the t-shirts, but it actually lent a nice touch.

In an article I saw yesterday, her family said they are very - I think embarrassed was the word they used, I can't recall exactly. They said that when she was born, they saw a girl baby and raised her as a girl.

This is a very strange story, and you're right - she must be devastated.

Her family is very basic. She is a girl to them and to herself. I place all the blame on the sports body who did the test and did not preempt this whole thing. I just hope the IAAF handles this better than the S. African government did.

365 Charles Johnson  Fri, Sep 11, 2009 5:01:52pm

Things is, the guy in Michigan seems to have had a hit list of people he had a grudge against. There doesn't appear to have been an ideological motive for the murder of the anti-abortion activist -- he was just offended by the guy's signs. The other person he killed was someone he had a business dispute with.

In other words, it's a murder and yeah, it's terrible. But it's a very different kind of murder from the killing of Dr. Tiller, which was an act of domestic terrorism specifically intended to strike fear into all abortion doctors.

Hey Eric, heres my story...

A fortnight ago, I suggested service the cars.

Here what happened...

Girlfriends Oil Change:

1) Pull up to the car dealer.
2) Drink a cup of coffee
3) 25 minutes later, paid cash $46 and leave with a properly maintained vehicle. (She says)

Money spent:
Oil Change: $44.00
Coffee: $2.00
Total: $46.00

My Oil Change:

1) Wait until Saturday, drive to auto parts store and buy a case of oil, filter, kitty litter, hand cleaner and a scented tree, pay via credit card $50.00.
2) Stop and buy a case of beer, pay via credit card $24, drive home.
3) Open a beer and drink it.
4) Jack car up. Spend 30 minutes looking for jack stands.
5) Find jack stands under girlfriends packing boxes.
6) In frustration, open another beer and drink it.
7) Place drain pan under engine.
8) Look for 14mm ring spanner.
9) Give up and use shifting spanner.
10) Unscrew drain plug.
11) Drop drain plug in pan of hot oil: splashed hot oil on myself in process. Curse, wildly.
12) Crawl out from under car to wipe hot oil off of face and arms. Throw the kitty litter on spilled oil.
13) Have another beer while watching oil drain.
14) Spend 30 minutes looking for oil filter removal tool.
15) Give up; crawl under car and hammer a screwdriver through oil filter and twist off
16) Crawl out from under car with dripping oil filter splashing oil everywhere from holes. Cleverly hide old oil filter among trash in trash can to avoid environmental penalties. Drink a beer.
17) Install new oil filter making sure to apply a thin coat of oil to gasket surface.
18) Dump first litre of fresh oil into engine.
19) Remember drain plug from step 11.
20) Hurry to find drain plug in drain pan.
21) Drink beer.
22) Discover that first litre of fresh oil is now on the floor. Throw kitty litter on oil spill.
23) Get drain plug back in with only a minor spill. Drink beer.
24) Crawl under car getting kitty litter into eyes. Wipe eyes with oily rag used to clean drain plug. Slip with stupid shifting spanner tightening drain plug and bang knuckles on chassis removing any excess skin between knuckles and chassis.
25) Begin cursing fit.
26) Throw stupid shifting spanner.
27) Curse for additional 5 minutes because spanner hit neighbours window.
28) Beer.
29) Clean up hands and bandage as required to stop blood flow.
30) Beer.
31) Dump in five fresh litres of oil.
32) Beer.
33) Lower car from jack stands.
34) Move car back to apply more kitty litter to fresh oil spilled during any missed steps.
35) Beer.
36) Test drive car.
37) Get pulled over: arrested for driving under the influence.
38) Car gets impounded.
39) Call loving girlfreind, make bail.
40) 12 hours later, get car from impound yard.

Money spent:
Parts: $50.00
DUI: $1000.00
Impound fee: $75.00
Bail: $800.00
Beer: $24.00
Total: $1949.00
But at least the job was done right.

Trying to think of a comparison. That would be like someone shooting an "anti-hunting activist" not because he's a hunter that opposes the "anti-hunters" (and is off his rocker of course) but because he was offended by the PETA like images on the signs.

Senate Armed Services Chairman: No More U.S. Troops to Afghanistan

The debate whether to send more combat troops to Afghanistan took a twist reminiscent of the Iraq conflict when the head of the Senate Armed Services Committee on Friday advised not sending any more U.S. combat troops to Afghanistan beyond those already approved by President Obama until more Afghan security forces are trained.

Speaking on the eighth anniversary of the date the United States was attacked by terrorists trained in Afghanistan, Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., also called for a shift in U.S. efforts toward more trainers, who could, in part, be supplied by NATO allies. He said he would like a plan for Afghanistan that would replicate the "Sons of Iraq" strategy to separate low and mid-level Taliban fighters in Afghanistan from the leadership of that terrorist group.

The Afghan Waver

Sometime soon, Mr. Obama will have to respond to Lieutenant General Stanley McChrystal's likely request to increase the number of American troops in Afghanistan.

This past Thursday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi gave the most explicit suggestion so far that Democrats may oppose any such request. "I don't think there is a great deal of support for sending more troops to Afghanistan," Speaker Pelosi said, "in the country or in Congress."

The rumblngs are that McChrystal is going to ask for more than 40,000 more troops.

/we're going to find out if Obama really has the balls to fight the "good war" he was so adamant about winning during the campaign

Unclear. CNN is now reporting that he took offense at their display immediately adjacent to a school.

The shooter had obviously decided to dive over the edge and settle scores with everyone on his "list." There's no apparent ideology driving the selection of his victims, other than them doing something that ticked him off in some unfathomable way.

Well, the San Francisco Chronicle often gets letters complaining that the paper is too liberal, and that they are cancelling their subscription because of this. People write to complain about the new format, and cancel because of that. Occasionally they are accused of being too conservative, and cancellation ensues.

And back when Jane Magazine was still publishing, Bitch Magazine would frequently mock their content, and complain about them. Jane has since gone out of print, alas.

The guy was notorious in the area for his outlandish and offensive signs. He didn't deserve to die for it but it's easy to see how he was hated by people in the area. He was unlucky that one of the people that was disgusted with his signs decided to snap and go on a killing spree.

I'm with you on that one. I think most people saw ACORN as pretty corrupt anyway so this is nothing new to anyone who has done the slightest bit of homework. I'm glad the census dropped them but all the shrill caterwalling from the likes of Beck is getting tired.

Note that the Census Bureau did not drop them because of any wrongdoing -- they specifically dropped ACORN because of the political brouhaha drummed up by Beck.

re: #416 SanFranciscoZionist

Well, the San Francisco Chronicle often gets letters complaining that the paper is too liberal, and that they are cancelling their subscription because of this. People write to complain about the new format, and cancel because of that. Occasionally they are accused of being too conservative, and cancellation ensues.

And back when Jane Magazine was still publishing, Bitch Magazine would frequently mock their content, and complain about them. Jane has since gone out of print, alas.

Same as the Washington Post and the New York Times. Both used to be called conservative papers at one time and the Washington Post is still called conservative. Depends on where people stand obviously.

More on Wilson:

As a federal lawmaker, Wilson became a member of the House Immigration Reform Caucus (HIRC), a group of (mostly Republican) representatives founded by former Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO) with the mission of stopping “the explosive growth in illegal immigration,” “reversing the growth in legal immigration,” and halting “amnesties.” Other notoriously anti-immigrant members of HIRC include Steve King (R-IA), who described immigration as a “slow-motion Holocaust,” and Lamar Smith (R-TX), who equates undocumented immigrants with “terrorist weapons.” HIRC members Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA), Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO), and King all proclaimed that undocumented immigrants would receive health care benefits long before Wilson’s outburst. The two Republican representatives, Rep. Nathan Deal (R-GA) and Rep. Dean Heller (R-NV), who proposed amendments to the House health care bill that would’ve added stringent citizenship verification mechanisms are active members of the HIRC as well. Heller and Deal also lead the fight to overturn the 14th Amendment and end the policy of automatically granting anyone who is born in the country US citizenship.

Nice bunch!

They also specifically cited poor management.

"Over the last several months, through ongoing communication with our regional offices, it is clear that ACORN's affiliation with the 2010 Census promotion has caused sufficient concern in the general public, has indeed become a distraction from our mission, and may even become a discouragement to public cooperation, negatively impacting 2010 Census efforts," read a letter from Census Director Robert M. Groves to the president of ACORN.

"Unfortunately, we no longer have confidence that our national partnership agreement is being effectively managed through your many local offices. For the reasons stated, we therefore have decided to terminate the partnership," the letter said.

The really sad thing is he is raising money like crazy. His oponent is as well but it looks like the craziness is strong on the right and continues to get more ludicrous as the days go on.

It's really not that surprising. Since the Bush years when the left completely lost their minds, politics have become exceptionally divisive. You had Stark on the floor of the house saying Bush was sending soldiers to Iraq to have their heads blown off for his personal amusement . You had Pelosi and Reid both calling Bush a liar. And seriously, I don't give a shit where they said it. At least Wilson said it in Obama's presence instead of shreiking at him and running to the media to call him a liar behind his back. If that is the way the left wants to play the game, they can hardly complain when the right starts parroting their behavior.

I was appalled at what the left did to President Bush and I am just as appalled at what the right is doing to President Obama. Like it or not he is the president and he deserves our respect, maybe not personally but definitely positionally.

448 Big Steve  Fri, Sep 11, 2009 5:46:07pm

I wrote to my congressman Ron Paul over a month ago asking if he would be having any town halls over Health insurance reform. Finally today I got a reply;

Thank you for contacting the office of Congressman Ron Paul and for your interest in what the Congressman is doing to communicate his views regarding health care to his constituents, and to give his constituents the ability to communicate the views on this important topic to Congressman Paul.

While Congressman Paul did not hold any formal town hall meetings during the August district work period, he did have numerous constituent meeting and attended several public functions at which health care was discussed. These meetings gave Congressman Paul an opportunity to hear the concerns the people of the 14th district have with the President's health care plan.

As you may know, Congressman Paul has written as series of columns outlining his concerns with President Obama's health care proposals. These columns have received nationwide distribution. Congressman Paul has also made a number of media appearances to explain his views on health care, including several appearances where he debated supporters of the health care bill.

You can be sure that Congressman Paul will continue to oppose nationalized healthcare. Congressman Paul will also work to advance health freedom by promoting legislation like his Comprehensive Health Care Reform Act (HR 1495), which puts individuals in charge of their health care by providing them with health care tax credits and deductions. Congressman Paul has also introduced the Protect Patients and Physicians Privacy Act (HR 2630), which ensures that government bureaucrats cannot see your medical records without your consent.

Thank you again for writing. Please feel free to do so in the future with any other questions, comments or suggestions.

Please note that none of the constituent meetings were noted on his website.

Pakistan: We Have Met The Enemy And It Is Us

This all began three years ago, when the Taliban communications director, Abdul Haq, was captured in Afghanistan. This led to some embarrassing revelations. Haq, who has held his job for about 14 months when he was caught, admitted that the recent increase in Taliban activity was facilitated by Pakistani intelligence (the CIA-like ISI)

Of course this is old news in most respects. What is disturbing and very scary to the Pakistanis is that Generals and rank officers in the ISI appear to have been actually planning attacks on Pakistani citizens, soldiers and politicians.

I always had more faith that the conservatives in this country would take the high road and voice their opposition with thoughtful arguments, reason and facts.

I used to have faith that the media would actually report all sides of an issue as well... definitely a case of misplaced faith, wouldn't you agree? The squeaky wheel gets the grease, as usual.

Now, I'd rather the media had reported that the republicans have offered over 800 amendments to the democrats health care legislation, every single one of which was shot down or it would be nice if they reported that the republicans do have their own health care proposals, most of which do not involve 1000 page bills that intrude on every aspect from your employer to your doctor and that they had requested a meeting with Obama but had been told their input wasn't needed...but I guess they were just too damned busy covering Obama's dog, or Michelle's newest dress.

It is apparent the high road isn't working. Instead of being lauded for not showing their asses 24/7 like the left did for the 8 previous years, they right is accused of doing nothing by trying to work within the system. It wasn't until the highly disparaged tax protests and health care town halls that anyone even realized there was opposition to Obama and the democrats.

re: #488 Wendya

If someone didn't realize that there was opposition until the tax day protests and tea parties, then they needed to pull their head out of the sand. Any person with an internet connection, a few hours, and a desire for the truth could very easily come to a logical conclusion. Conservative politicians can make their voices know but unfortunately, all too many of them have taken up with the likes of Beck or the birther movement and have been marinalized by the left. Yes, the one sided media is a huge problem but it can be overcome with sane rational arguments through different outlets. What is really killing the conservatives is that many of those outlets have been coopted by folks like Beck who use them simply as a way to oppose in every way but never offer constructive ideas. I long for the day when a hard hitting conservative jouralist/investigative reporter has access to what Beck has access to.

How many people really spend hours a day on the internet getting their news? And where are they getting it? Are they searching out stories or are they going to the same organizations that deliver their news on TV?

Conservative politicians can make their voices know but unfortunately, all too many of them have taken up with the likes of Beck or the birther movement and have been marinalized by the left.

Now, that's what I mean by people who get their news from one type of source. If you only get stories about Beck and the birthers, you're trolling for crap and it's being delivered to you in large amounts. Gee, you'd think the only thing the republicans have done in the last 8 months is hang on Beck's every word and scream about birth certificates. That is bullshit.

Yes, the one sided media is a huge problem but it can be overcome with sane rational arguments through different outlets. And who would air their views? CNN? ABC? CBS? NBC? PBS? BBC?

It takes a tremendous amount of money to start your own cable channel. It takes years before it's picked up in enough markets to enable wide spread coverage. It is a for profit business, first and foremost. We have been lucky that Fox news has any conservative coverage at all and it ain't all Glenn Beck and Hannity, by the way. Their actual news coverage is not "right wing" or "left wing" editorializing. It's the best choice out of an incredibly partisan and shitty field.

You make it sound like all the R's need to do is put on the Mr Smith hats and the media will treat them with respect and cover their plans/comments/ etc... That is not true. Today's media is the most hostile environment for conservatives since I was born 46 years ago.

I don't like ACORN, but this is getting ridiculous. The banks were forced to give the loans because congress passed a law that said they had to. So if you want to blame anyone, blame congress. You should really blame the banks too, I never heard them complain too loudly about the law as long as housing prices were going up.

A wingnut talking point is that the mortgage market collapse was all about giving mortgages to shiftless brown people who defaulted. Hence it's the fault of organisations that helped minorities get mortgages or provided legal assistance to them.

An astonishingly high number of people seem to believe this. Not quite sure what the ACORN connection is supposed to be, exactly...

If you bothered to do your own research you'd see that it was and is a standard claim on the crazy right. I think that is likely to be true Sharm as a simple matter of demographics. The majority of people overall in this country are white (still, but that will change by 2030).
What that claim ignores though is proportional representation: a higher percentage of minorities will be lower income, compared to the percentage of white people who are.

* 61% of Latino children—8.8 million—live in low-income families.
* 61% of black children—6.5 million—live in low-income families.

Logitech MX Revolution. You highlight the text and click the button. You can also set the search engine in the mouse program. About 100 bucks but they go on sale from time to time. Wireless-laser.

Ah cool I have a Logitech G5 gaming mouse on my desktop. I'll check it out.

Most racists aren't too fussy - for them there's white and there's non white. My guess is most racists that promote the talking point about mortgages will be working on the fact that poor non whites taken as a whole outnumber poor whites.

Looking at the figures and it looks like 18% of the subprime mortgages went to blacks with 5% towards conventional loans.

I don't think the housing crisis was helped at all by promoting the idea that "everyone should have a home of their own" even if they had no savings as a backup for a downturn, and got signed up for an adjustable rate mortgage without understanding the risks, but I think what really made the mess were mortgage-backed securities.

Completely agree on all your points. The home-ownership society, the lack of understanding on the part of the people signing, the ongoing American tendency to live on credit and beyond our means-- and most of all the mortgage-backed securities. The meltdown wasn't caused bottom-up, by individuals defaulting-- it was entirely top down.

I never understood how someone could take a bunch of non-performing loans and sprinkle them among a bunch of good loans, wrap the whole lot in a bundle and sell them as good loans, and not get busted for fraud.

Oh it's a G5 Laser mouse but I can't have wireless for gaming man. It throws me off. It's really cool actually, lots of programmable buttons and you get a little set of weights that you can use to balance the mouse, make it heavier or lighter, weight it to the front back or either side, etc.

The little tin in the picture is the case for the weights. There is a tray for the weights that slides into the bottom of the mouse.

Another thing Charles, I wasn't screaming that it was "revenge". If an abortionist gets gunned down or a clinic bombed one assumes that it was done by a Pro-Life Anti-abortion activist. Would it be out of the realm of possibility that a Pro-Life demonstrator would be attacked by a Pro-abortion or to be politically correct "Pro-Choice" supporter? Just saying.

BTW, the nice thing about LGF is that I can get links from folks here that scour different parts of the intertubes to get the usually unbiased reports of events. That's why I asked for any links. Sorry I asked. I'll have to get back to more important things right now. Feeding my face.

Lower income people were disproportionately targeted for subprime loans, and disproportionately unlikely to understand the risks.

But many people got swept up in the madness. I don't know if people saw this article in the NYT magazine section in May, but it's horribly fascinating:

If there was anybody who should have avoided the mortgage catastrophe, it was I. As an economics reporter for The New York Times, I have been the paper’s chief eyes and ears on the Federal Reserve for the past six years. I watched Alan Greenspan and his successor, Ben S. Bernanke, at close range. I wrote several early-warning articles in 2004 about the spike in go-go mortgages. Before that, I had a hand in covering the Asian financial crisis of 1997, the Russia meltdown in 1998 and the dot-com collapse in 2000. I know a lot about the curveballs that the economy can throw at us.

But in 2004, I joined millions of otherwise-sane Americans in what we now know was a catastrophic binge on overpriced real estate and reckless mortgages. Nobody duped or hypnotized me. Like so many others — borrowers, lenders and the Wall Street dealmakers behind them — I just thought I could beat the odds.

Actually, yes, it's completely unheard of.

Unlike religious fanatics who bomb clinics and murder doctors, which is unfortunately pretty common.

I've seen those. Almost looks like the last wireless model I had from Logitech. I like the idea of weights. The MX has a good weight to it -- light mice drive me crazy. A cheap mouse is like having a cheap pencil, pen or in a gaming sense something like a cheap golf club.

My Personal Credit Crisis

I sat back and watched people get those subprime loans several years ago. At the time I couldn't understand how they could even consider those with the eventually monthly payments that would be involved. Every other Joe on the street was buying a house with barely any money down and an income that didn't match those projected mortgages. It was the buyers, sellers and mortgage companies all working together. The seller of course had only one thing in mind and that was for the buyer to sign the contract. Once they get their commission they're done.

I used to have the MX Revolution. Great mouse until it broke. Like all the mouses (mice?) I've used over the years something eventually breaks--the single click became an annoying double click on the MX.

I finally bought a cheap $10 mouse. I'm done throwing money away on cool features. :) And anyway, the right-click on a Mac already offers Google search or dictionary/wikipedia on a highlighted word or phrase. The only thing I miss is horizontal scrolling. But I have a 30" monitor so expanding a window beyond horizontal scrolling isn't usually a problem. :)

Same things happened here. I'm actually on my third MX. I figured out a way to fix it but that doesn't last very long. Kind of a waste considering that the switch is about 99 cents.

Really scary isn't it? That NYT article talks about how the loan officer pushed them to take out a bigger mortgage and get an even bigger house than the one they'd been looking at. Those people didn't care what happened once they got their cut.

I had assumed we would start by renting a house or an apartment, but it quickly became clear that it was almost easier to borrow a half-million dollars and buy something.

I personally would be happy living in a van by the river with my own true love, but that's me...

I don't understand it. People paying $2500 a month for a regular old house.

It was a combined effort and the whole blame game serves no purpose in the end. I'm reading some old comments from Rush Limbaugh and he falls into an ideological trap of his own making. Blame the Democrats. He even went so far as to blame Obama and this was in 2008. As far as I know Obama hadn't done much of anything regarding mortgages. This is odd because they were always saying that Obama did nothing. Suddenly he did something and it was with mortgages?

But Republicans signed on to the same Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae schemes. They too were a part of the subprime lending just like everyone else. It's origins were with Carter but it also survived through 8 years of Reagan, 4 years of Bush I, and 8 years of Bush II. Didn't see any executive orders during that time which totals 20 years. That doesn't even include the Republican majorities in congress during this time.

Of course that's politics. The Democrats blame the Republicans and vice versa. The Democrats had their hand in this but so did the Republicans -- they both have their hands in the cookie jar.

A lot of what is supposed to be facts or history turns into a public relations campaign. That's what politics is: advertising with a good dose of selective memories and reasoning.

Yup, totally agree. It wasn't a partisan situation at all. People forget that the political elites in our country (and probably everywhere) serve the interests of the economic elites. Walter L Newton is always making that point and I agree with him on that.

In this case I think the blame has to go to those who were bundling the mortgage securities and trading in them. As jaunte said above-- I can't understand how those people aren't in jail.

It's rare that they're sent to jail isn't it. Most of the time they get away with fines or penalties and that's about it. The firms that were responsible give heavily to both parties but more to the point they are part of the same culture which includes the economic elite. They live in the same neighborhoods and go to the same churches.

re: #532 Charles

Sorry, Charles, but after reading my post I didn't see anything where I stated that ACORN had a "major" part in the mortgage crisis. I, unlike Killgore Trout, believe that they did have "some" influence in the mortgage circus and definitely had "some" influence in voter fraud. If I remember right, there was one college journalism crew that uncovered a house in Ohio that was being used by ACORN activists for voter fraud. I'm surprised some here don't recall that. Must be more of the "nothing to see here" attitude I guess.

You did the same thing characterizing my post on the shooting of the Pro-Lifer as "screaming revenge" when I did no such thing. Yes, I made an assumption on how the MSM would be handling the news but after finding more info on it, the evidence appears to be that the killer had a problem with the guy showing the graphic signs near the school. Was the killer pro-choice? Who knows. It's possible but then I'm not a reporter or blogger.

Mischaracterizing posts brings out the ding down clubs and comments from your fellow lizards. Sad to see.

"It is clear that ACORN's affiliation with the 2010 census promotion has caused sufficient concern in the general public, has indeed become a distraction from our mission, and may even become a discouragement to public cooperation, negatively impacting 2010 census efforts," Groves wrote.

Once again, you're misrepresenting a news story. Imagine my surprise.
