A Response to Stephen Green (With Link)

Blogosphere • Views: 22,890

Stephen Green has a “response” to a comment I posted earlier in one of the tea party threads. He deliberately omits the link to LGF, which makes this a rather odd sort of response — one I’m not intended to see, I guess.

Vodkapundit » A Response to Charles Johnson.

Over at LGF (no link, sorry) Charles Johnson notes that I’m taking phone calls from “white supremacist” Stacy McCain. (Thanks, Darlene.)

Now, I’ve worked with Stacy in person a couple of times, at the DNC last summer and at CPAC in February. Both were crowded, high-stress situations. At no time did I see Stacy treat anyone — of any color, creed, whathaveyou — with anything less than respect and good humor.

So, is Robert Stacy McCain a white supremacist? Hell if I know. But he enjoys breaking bread with agnostic half Jews like me, which would certainly make him a different kind of white supremacist.

Robert Stacy McCain writes for VDARE and Takimag, two disgusting, openly racist websites. And he’s a friend of Richard Spencer, a self-avowed white nationalist. McCain is a member of the white supremacist group League of the South, and he’s associated with the deeply racist American Renaissance.

Check out any of these groups on the web, Stephen, and see if I’m exaggerating. You might want to start with Google’s cache of the American Renaissance website.

I don’t link directly to them because they’re a hate group.

There’s more information on Robert Stacy McCain here: Defending Dixie.

With the arrival of Assistant National Editor Robert Stacy McCain in 1997, the Times’ disassociation from the racism of American Renaissance became a distant memory. McCain, who wrote the story about Democrats and Dixie, has covered the group’s biannual conferences in 1998, 2000 and 2002, making the Times the only major American newspaper to devote news stories to American Renaissance. Since 1999, the Times has also reprinted at least six excerpts from American Renaissance in its page-2 culture section, never acknowledging the highly controversial nature of the source.

And here.

And here: Rebels With a Cause.

LOS member and Washington Times national reporter Robert Stacy McCain says in an essay posted on the League’s main site, slavery was “generally” characterized by “cordial and affectionate relations” between white and black Southerners.

UPDATE at 9/12/09 4:04:20 pm:

Here’s Robert Stacy McCain’s 2003 speech to the Sons of the Confederacy.

This we know: Our ancestors’ cause was just and their conduct was honorable.

UPDATE at 9/12/09 5:03:50 pm:

Here’s how Robert Stacy McCain feels about interracial marriage.

“[T]he media now force interracial images into the public mind and a number of perfectly rational people react to these images with an altogether natural revulsion. The white person who does not mind transacting business with a black bank clerk may yet be averse to accepting the clerk as his sister-in-law, and THIS IS NOT RACISM, no matter what Madison Avenue, Hollywood and Washington tell us.”

And here’s a post at Robert Stacy McCain’s website that links to the Political Cesspool blog — an openly white supremacist hate site: The Other McCain: ‘The Full Monty Joint Review’ Avalanche.

Nope. Exactly like all the modern white supremacists. Some of them are even "supporters of Israel." The old guidebook with the white sheets and flaming crosses is no longer a reliable source.

I'd wager much of their support for Israel has less to do when their love of the state than a desire for Jeebus's second coming.

8 medaura18586  Sat, Sep 12, 2009 3:31:36pm

I wish I could have recorded the brief conversation I had with Richard Spencer at the Lolita Bar (in NYC) a few months ago. Its paraphrased version defies belief. But basically, he walked up to me to correct the non racist assertions I made about the founding principles of this country. Did not know the guy... only later learned he was the Richard Spencer of Taki Mag. But he has no qualms about walking up to strangers and declaring himself a white nationalist.

No one, unless lobotomized, can be close friends with him, as RS McCain professes to be, yet miss his fundamentally bigoted nature. And if my second-hand description of his buddy is not authoritative grounds for dumping McCain, his membership in the League of South should be.

Sometimes it's worse than that. Some of them use it as justification for wanting their own "homeland" where they can be with "their own kind."

Yes, RS McCain hangs out with a mostly agnostic Jew, is it? But he also pals around with a fevered lunatic hater. There... they cancel off, do they? Or is RS McCain a really special kind of white supremacist?

Charles, I did think his withholding the link to your comment was very strange. But on second thought, I'm not sure he was being a jerk. He may have merely been lazy. I saw the hat tip he gives to a Darlene (from Protein Wisdom), who quotes you without providing a link to your comment.

Agree. Just reading this: "national reporter Robert Stacy McCain says in an essay posted on the League’s main site, slavery was “generally” characterized by “cordial and affectionate relations” between white and black Southerners."
made me a want to throw up.

On the other hand, if McCain is right, it would certainly explain all the wonderful race relations we saw in the South during the 50's and 60's. Perhaps the KKK was merely helping out their black friends dry their laundry?

I sat next to a senior person in the Jewish Defense League on a plane a couple of years ago. He went on about how Israel was owed to the Jews because his people owned it historically, etc. It was an ethnic and cultural Judaism. When we parted, I said, "Well, God bless." And he looked at me with surprise, and said "oh, I don't believe in God." It was interesting.

17. Stephen Green:

Absolutely, although I can’t do much more than reiterate what I’ve already said. I like Stacy, I’ve worked with Stacy a couple time, I’ve never heard or seen him say or do anything remotely racist.

As for the pissing match between CJ and Stacy, today’s the first I’ve heard of it, as I don’t read LGF and I don’t read RSM unless he sends me a link I find interesting. That’s not a slam on either one of them — I just don’t have time to read blogs the way I once did.

Also, I should have been more clear as to WHY I didn’t link CJ’s comment — I couldn’t make the link work! That’s probably my bad, but I couldn’t say for sure.

Other than that, I’d really rather stay out of this fight. I think it’s possible to get along with both guys, although — even as a non-believer — I find reports of CJ’s anti-religious rants a bit off-putting, same as I find RSM’s choice of paychecks.

Oh man. As I just wrote to Charles:

Whenever I tune in to RS McCain, so far on very few occasions, his own words unmistakeably reveal his sickening worldview. It is very possible to compile volumes of quoted material from his diatribes. Someone should do it. And do it with other princes of the right-wing blogosphere."

That's what I mean. Whenever I have paid attention to RS McCain, I have felt it in my gut that his bigotry is lurking right under the surface of his plush, cutesy, affected prose. This is what I am talking about.

No, I didn't know that, because I never read Derbyshire.

He's also mentioned on the wiki link to scientific racism:

Coon's school of thought saw increasing opposition in mainstream anthropology after World War II. Ashley Montagu was particularly vocal in denouncing Coon, especially in his Man’s Most Dangerous Myth: The Fallacy of Race. By the 1960s, Coon's approach had been rendered obsolete in mainstream anthropology, but his system continued to appear in publications by his student John Lawrence Angel as late as in the 1970s. Coon continues to be quoted by openly racist authors writing in the 2000s, such as John Derbyshire.

Mr. Green, I urge you to take a look at the content Charles has posted at LGF in response to your posting and entertain the possibility that there may be some substance to his point. If in the end you are not persuaded that’s your prerogative, but given that you felt this important enough to cover in a posting, it’s probably worth giving equal time to investigate the credibility of Charles’s claims. That would be the reasonable course of action of a critical thinker, wouldn’t it?

This will be my last word on this, for two reasons: 1) I have family coming over in a few; and 2) there’s not much else to say.

Having talked to Stacy about just this, I’d describe him as a proud Southern partisan — but no racist. From what I’ve read about CJ (but not from him because, as I’ve said, I don’t read LGF), he might have a bigotry of his own against people of faith. But not having read first hand, or talked to CJ, I couldn’t — and wouldn’t — say.

As a small-l libertarian, I have to take my political allies (very few) where I can (most -desperately!- anywhere). I think CJ performs a valuable service at LGF exposing jihadists, and that, whatever other faults he might have, RSM truly believes in small government. I can also say from firsthand experience that both men are fun to drink with.

Although from what I’ve seen today, I don’t think I would want to drink with them both at the same time.

Semi-OT, but not:

The Washington Times, in attention to having been busted numerous times for lying, has a long and sordid history of supporting white supremacism, people like RS McCain, and considering VDARE a credible news source.

Here is an SPLC report from 2005:
The News That Fits

Long criticized for its brand of journalism, The Washington Times makes a habit of publishing the work of extremists — including the wife of the newspaper's managing editor

Here is Media Matters in 2004 documenting them using VDARE as a source:

In its August 15 "Culture, et cetera" column, The Washington Times excerpted a column by Steve Sailer that originally appeared on the website VDARE.com, an anti-immigration web site that describes itself as "white nationalist."

It's no surprise at all that RSM would have been a reporter for them.

//
Side note: when my ship was in a shipyard in Charleston, I had the opportunity to visit downtown Charleston, SC for a bit, and ran across a "Confederate Museum", run by the "Daughters of Confederacy". I just happen to notice very few (read: NONE) African Americans inside, and the lady in the front looked like she would be extremely hostile to any who happened to walk inside.

You might be absolutely correct in your assessment that the lady "looked like" she would be hostile to African Americans - but how did you determine that?

There are two ways to be (come) Jewish: to convert, or to have a Jewish mother. So it's possible to be an agnostic Jew.

While generally true, the Reform movement does allow for patrilineal descent though not recognized by the other (American) branches.

As for being an agnostic Jew, sure, why not? Jews can be atheist as well Humanist, Ethical Culture, etc.

I don't know what you are but you might try dumping your Catholic shame for Jewish guilt. Guilt is a lot easier to deal with than shame. As far as the protestant business goes, that depends on the denomination. If you're Lutheran, serve matzo with your casseroles and you should be okay.

Wiper (occupation)

A wiper is the most junior crewmember in the engine room of a ship. Their role consists of cleaning the engine spaces and machinery, and assisting the engineers as directed.

In the United States Merchant Marine, in order to be occupied as a wiper a person has to have a Merchant Mariner's Document and STCW certificate issued by the United States Coast Guard. Because of international conventions and agreements, all wipers who sail internationally are similarly documented by their respective countries.

They are important, as many wipers I know have worked there way up to at least Deck Machinst or Refrigeration Engineer in MSC so far... Not to mention they do the job of making sure the rag bins and trash is taken out every night, the clean rag bins are full of clean rags, the deck and machinery is kept clean and free of leaking oil, and sometimes they assist us in repairing machinery when we need them.

I noticed on the American Renaissance site a link called "A Skull That Rewrites the History of Man" - it's a story that appeared recently in the UK newspaper "The Independent". The article suggests that man may have done some of his evolution in Eurasia after leaving Africa, and then returned to Africa to complete his evolution before leaving Africa again and populating the rest of the world. However, the comments on that thread are full of racist morons denying that the human species came out of Africa period. It seems these creeps really need to believe that there is something genetically special about Europeans that is not shared by Africans.

Whats interesting is that humans are still evolving. I saw a magazine article that looked at the mitochondrial DNA (from the mother) and the Y-Chromosome (from the father), and used that to trace exactly where we all came from, and they found that somewhere in Eastern Africa, is where all modern humans originate.

they also tracked the slight mutations in the Mitochondrial DNA and the Y-chromosome over the years, just to show how we've been evolving to this day.

Yep - that is what science is telling us. These people want to argue with DNA? lol I predict at some point these morons will start coming out with arguments to the effect that DNA reveals nothing about ancestry at all. It's either that or accept reality, and I don't see them doing that somehow.

Its not just DNA, its mitochondrial DNA, which really does form an exactly copy from the Mother, as the one from the sperm dies when it hits the egg. But as always a mutation sometimes happens, and therefore you can track it exactly where it goes.

Exactly. The BBC did an excellent series recently about the evolution and migration of human beings out of Africa called "Mans Incredible Journey". I recommend it if you haven't seen it already. Debunks a number of myths along the way including the Chinese theory that they (the Chinese) are genetically distinct from the rest of humanity, and the theory that Europeans are genetically distinct because of the input of (don't laugh now) Neanderthal genes. Interestingly, some racists still cling to that last one. Gotta get their genetic specialness from somewhere/

What's neat is that the magazine article also talked about the Y-Chromosome which really does exactly come from the Father, so they can trace both the father and mother genes throughout history.

There was a time when character was defined by standing by real principles, irrespective of whether or not that stand was popular or not.

Now it appears that a necessary component of 'character' is popularity- the approval of a group is sufficient to make any cause, individual or government, moral, no matter how ugly or hypocritical they might be.

Looking askance and not rocking the boat are now part of the moral identity for many- and for Stephen Green all it took was a couple of drinks.

lol, have you tried Anchor Steam? Brewed in San Fransisco and has a very stout flavor. Then there are the imports that are very good, like the ones from Mexico, like Pacifico and Dos Equis...

I love amber Dos Euis - 4.7 content... I went to Ixtapa with 60 Americans and I only drank the Amber - and I alone survived Montezuma.

Charles, check out the 331 post next thread down. Wondering why this has been allowed to stay up so long?

Of course this is not racism, it's objective observation:

McCain is a member of the white supremacist group League of the South

I wonder if he has one of those "anti-racist" Nathan Bedford Forrest T-shirts they peddle over there.

Maybe because I didn't see it?

Or maybe you think I'm watching every comment posted at LGF?

Where have you been, by the way? There's a report button on comments like that, and it takes one click to let me know.

I wouldn't be so sure about that -- I was a touring musician for a lot of years.

Ba-dum-bump.

WTF?

When do we get to get past the ad hominem crap?

OK – Charles Johnson has pissed a lot of people on the right off. But he never claimed to be a righty. And I didn’t hear anyone complaining when he was being “condescending” to Islamists, Obamatons, and all of the BDS crap that dominated the left.

So there is a simple question – is CJ right or wrong about Stacy McCain? If he is wrong, refute it conclusively and he’ll be shamed for calling the guy out. But if it comes down to a defense akin to “This is not the Reverend Wright that I knew” then some people need to get a grip.

Which is the whole point of what Johnson has been posting on for a while.

If you need any more evidence of how deranged those people are, just go look at what's being posted now.

re: #93 Cannadian Club Akbar

So, Agnostic Jew means, agnostic as a belief and Jew as a decent?

It can be as simple as that, but for some individuals it's more nuanced -- for example, a person who self-describes as a "Jewish atheist" might mean, in essence, "the God I don't believe in is the Jewish one, as opposed to the one that ex-Christian atheists don't believe in."

If this seems silly at first glance, consider that atheists who were raised Christian are apt to spend a certain amount of time arguing that the doctrine of the Trinity is logically incoherent, precisely because Trinitarianism is so central to the definition of God that they were brought up with (and then walked away from). But to atheists who were raised in Judaism, it's a total non-issue whether "God is Three Persons in One" makes sense or not.

Heh! That's a big reason why so many primitive cultures independently developed some variant on the "beer" recipe -- it's a way to store water so that it remains safely drinkable. The insoxification (hic!) is just caking on the ice...

Point of detail:

Not defending RSMcC, but I followed the link to the rancid "cesspool" site out of curiosity (I am a strong believer in knowing the enemy), and the post actually mocks "this bozo" (as he refers to RSMcC) as living in fantasyland (like a laundry list of conservatives discussed in the same screed). Link in context:

When should we expect to see that, exactly? When the percentage of people in California who speak a foreign language at home hits 60%? Oh yeah, I forgot – immigrants bring a lot of energy to this country and are going to reinvigorate the GOP. Just ask Rush! He’ll tell ya! Plus, this bozo found a Nigerian cab driver who loves Rush Limbaugh, so it’s all good!

His technique should be obvious by now...

You cannot build a successful political movement by a process of subtraction, and building a winning coalition is impossible if you organize on losing principles. Allowing your opposition to dictate the terms of acceptable discourse is a losing principle, as Jeff Goldstein has striven to explain. Ergo, Johnson manifests a defeatist tendency when he pronounces Geller and Spencer "untouchables" because they attended a European conference whose promoters included some unsavory characters.

Was there any genuine danger that Geller and Spencer would return from Brussels singing the Horst Wessel Lied as they goosestepped down Broadway arm-in-arm with David Duke? Or, as I think far more likely, was Johnston concerned that the presence of a neo-Nazi element at Brussels would be used by liberals to discredit mainstream conservatism?

This is the kind of Republican flinch reflex -- "Oh, we can't say that, it might make the liberals angry!" -- that annoys the crap out of me. Look, we've all been officially branded "Rightwing Extremists," so what's the point of this fearful, defensive, cringing quest for "respectability"?

259 Sharmuta  Sun, Sep 13, 2009 8:02:43am

re: #258 mph

Wow. So now respectability is is a bad thing. Since they lack it in the circles he runs with, I'm sure it is viewed as unimportant, though I find it rather telling.
