ABC News Misquoted By Naderite Tea Partier

US News • Views: 4,338

ABC News has issued a statement to correct the false crowd numbers reported by Naderite Matt Kibbe at today’s tea party demonstration: Protest Crowd Size Estimate Falsely Attributed to ABC News.

Conservative activists, who organized a march on the U.S. Capitol today in protest of the Obama administration’s health care agenda and government spending, erroneously attributed reports on the size of the crowds to ABC News.

Matt Kibbe, president of FreedomWorks, the group that organized the event, said on stage at the rally that ABC News was reporting that 1 million to 1.5 million people were in attendance.

At no time did ABC News, or its affiliates, report a number anywhere near as large. ABCNews.com reported an approximate figure of 60,000 to 70,000 protesters, attributed to the Washington, D.C., fire department. In its reports, ABC News Radio described the crowd as “tens of thousands.”

Brendan Steinhauser, spokesman for FreedomWorks, said he did not know why Kibbe cited ABC News as a source.

As a result of Kibbe’s erroneous attribution, several bloggers and commenters repeated the misinformation.

It seems the 2 million figure originated from a Democrat.

But there is some confusion over how many people will show up, and where Democrats are getting their estimates. A House leadership aide warned fellow Democrats in a memo obtained by FOXNews.com that up to 2 million people may attend.

"It looks like Saturday's event is going to be a huge gathering, estimates ranging from hundreds of thousands to 2 million people," Doug Thornell, an aide to Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., wrote, noting that a demonstration held Thursday turned into an impromptu rally for Rep. Joe Wilson, who has come under fire for his outburst during Obama's nationally televised speech to a joint session of Congress

Is Life Hardwired Into the Universe? Some Experts Say "Yes"

"If life really does form readily then we might expect it to have started many times over on Earth. There could be alien microbes right here, under our noses. Most life is microbial, and you can't tell just by looking whether a microbe is "our" life or alien. You need to analyze the chemical innards. The search for terrestrial aliens has only just begun. If they are here, they could be identified soon. And the discovery that all life on Earth did not, after all, have a common origin would virtually prove that we are not alone in the universe."

Here is a video purporting to be from today's protest:

Now the youtube poster claims 1.5 to 2 million... yet if you watch the march as it leaves its origin and moves down the street, you can see that the end of the crowd and the beginning of the crowd are still in the shot.

I very much doubt that is 1 million people. 100,000 maybe, or perhaps a bit more.

re: #106 pat

That is what I said. But I was not taking toll. The nutters like the Birchers etc. might have had them. Since there maybe 10,000 in the entire country, they were lost in this crowd. But I am sure there were truthers also, etc.

Please, go look at the earlier thread. There was some pretty despicable stuff.

I've been waiting for the puppet-sign that the right wing have fully embraced the pointless. And there it is.

I listened to a more than a few of the speeches this morning. There was a lot of "audit the Fed" talk. Lots of Paulians.

The speeches were pointless as well.

He promoted Ralph Nader in the 2004 election. Is there some other criteria I should use for determining whether he's a Naderite?

The fact that he promotes a view that is the completely political opposite of Nader is a good criteria.

120 Reginald Perrin  Sat, Sep 12, 2009 8:23:51pm

I just did some simple math.

If the street was 150 feet wide and everybody was crammed in very very tight and taking up only 3 square feet of space, that would mean that there would be approx 50 people per linear foot of road.

That would be approx. 264,000 people per mile
.
One million people would be a line extending almost 4 miles.

If people took up more space that 3 sq. feet (very likely), or the street was narrower than 150 feet, then the line would have to be much longer.

re: #192 Gus 802

This sounds familiar:

In 1994, Citizens for a Sound Economy was listed in a Philip Morris document titled "Tobacco Strategy," which outlined the company's plans for "co-op efforts with third party tax organizations" aimed at defeating the Clinton administration's plan for increased cigarette excise taxes.

The section describing CSE's role stated,

We are funding a major (400K) grassroots initiative in the districts of House Energy & Commerce members to educate and mobilize consumers, through town hall meetings, radio and print ads, direct mail, patch-through calls to the Capitol switchboard, editorial board visits, polling data, meetings with Members and staff and the release of studies and other educational piecess. The goal of this effort is to show the Clinton plan as a government-run health care system replete with higher taxes and government spending, masive job losses, less choice, rationing of care and extensive bureaucracies. CSE is taking aim at the heart of the plan - employer mandates, new entitlements, price controls, mandatory health alliances, heavy load of new taxes and global budgets - and, with the program well underway, is by all accounts getting rave reviews in the respective districts.[Link: www.sourcewatch.org...]

The city of Bristol is in the middle of nowhere, has a population of only 25K, and there are only 2 roads out of the track.
