Obama adviser speaks about epilepsy locally
WHITESBORO — Amid the national debate on health care, a top White House adviser related his personal story about troubles his family encountered in getting care for a daughter with epilepsy.
David Axelrod, a close adviser to President Barack Obama, was the keynote speaker at a fundraiser for Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy, known as CURE, at Hart's Hill Inn Saturday evening.
Axelrod's wife, Susan Landau, is one of the founders of CURE, and she has come to the Mohawk Valley in the past for CURE fundraisers, though Saturday was Axelrod's first visit. More than 700 people attended Saturday's fundraiser, which raised $207,000.

The Japanese gov't did the equivalent wrt other groups that were treated poorly at that time. E.g. the "comfort women." Usually it is an Ambassador, or perhaps it is the PM... anyway, they will issue a statement of regret and/or apology.
When pushed further, they will mention that they have already apologized and have not retracted the previous statement, and therefore there is no need to continually apologize.
My take is that in the customary way, Japanese feel that one can speak for all, so if the PM or an Ambassador makes a statement they thus conclude that no-one else need make any further statements.
Furthermore, to introduce an Apology into the Parliament runs the risk of certain entrenched old-time right-wingers of taking the opposite position. Rather that have that happen, it's best to avoid that approach.
That's my take on it, anyway.

We have been in a huge drought since 9/07. It got so bad earlier this summer that folks in our 'hood were routinely shucking their clothes and dancing on their front lawns when they saw a frickin' *cloud* in the sky.

Already posted in spin-offs but I can't help but feel that this story deserves as much attention as possible:
Nobel Prize winner Norman Borlaug, father of the "Green Revolution," has died at age 95.
Agricultural scientist Norman Borlaug, the father of the "green revolution" who won the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in combating world hunger and saving hundreds of millions of lives, died Saturday in Texas, a Texas A&M University spokeswoman said. He was 95.
Borlaug died just before 11 p.m. Saturday at his home in Dallas from complications of cancer, said school spokeswoman Kathleen Phillips. Phillips said Borlaug's granddaughter told her about his death. Borlaug was a distinguished professor at the university in College Station.
The Nobel committee honored Borlaug in 1970 for his contributions to high-yield crop varieties and bringing other agricultural innovations to the developing world. Many experts credit the green revolution with averting global famine during the second half of the 20th century and saving perhaps 1 billion lives.
Thanks to the green revolution, world food production more than doubled between 1960 and 1990. In Pakistan and India, two of the nations that benefited most from the new crop varieties, grain yields more than quadrupled over the period.
You may never have heard of him, but Norm Borlaug was one of the very greatest scientists and humanitarians in history. The claim of a billion lives saved is not an exaggeration at all. Never was a Nobel Prize more richly deserved.

Already posted in spin-offs but I can't help but feel that this story deserves as much attention as possible:
Nobel Prize winner Norman Borlaug, father of the "Green Revolution," has died at age 95.
You may never have heard of him, but Norm Borlaug was one of the very greatest scientists and humanitarians in history. The claim of a billion lives saved is not an exaggeration at all. Never was a Nobel Prize more richly deserved.
Nice one man.

Well, goodnight Lizards. UT thumped Wyoming and vowed never to play a game above 5,000 feet again, Houston beat Okie State, The Ugliest Helmets in College Football beat the Irish, and SC sneaked by The Ohio State University. Tiger looks like Tiger again and Serena cursed her way out of the US Open. And it appears that Baby Jesus was present in DC today, turning 70,000 people into a multitude of over (in some claimed reports, 1.5 million).
A miracle in our own time!

Norman Borlaug R.I.P. Condolences not only to his family but the worldwide family of people he helped and generations of agricultural researchers who were inspired by his work. Flags around the world should be at half-mast in memory of this good man.
In 1986, Borlaug established the Des Moines, Iowa-based World Food Prize, a $250,000 award given each year to a person whose work improves the world's food supply. He also helped found and served as president of the Sasakawa Africa Foundation, an organization funded by Japanese billionaire Ryoichi Sasakawa to introduce the green revolution to sub-Saharan Africa.
In July 2007, Borlaug received the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian honor given by Congress.
He is survived by daughter Jeanie Borlaug Laube and her husband Rex; son William Gibson Borlaug and his wife Barbie; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
They asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the Borlaug International Scholars Fund. It helps students from developing countries pursue graduate studies or short-term experiential learning activities at Texas A&M or other land grant universities in the U.S.

The Daily Mail is repeating the claim of 2 million demonstrators in DC today.
Up to two million people marched to the U.S. Capitol today, carrying signs with slogans such as "Obamacare makes me sick" as they protested the president's health care plan and what they say is out-of-control spending.
The line of protesters spread across Pennsylvania Avenue for blocks, all the way to the capitol, according to the Washington Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency.
People were chanting "enough, enough" and "We the People." Others yelled "You lie, you lie!" and "Pelosi has to go," referring to California congresswoman Nancy Pelosi.

Hackers Imperil Wilson Campaign Web Site
Sources close to the South Carolina congressman charge that hackers have blitzed his campaign Web site JoeWilsonforCongress.com with a series of attacks that periodically shut down the site. The South Carolina Republican jeered at Obama "You lie!" during his health care reform speech to Congress.
But Wilson's quickly become a darling of the right, raising $1,000,000 in online campaign contributions since his outburst Wednesday night. Now sources familiar with Wilson's campaign say there's a concerted effort by hackers to flood the Congressman's Web site and keep him from raising money.
The petulant left can't stand Wilson raising money and so they do what comes naturally to them.
/the funny thing is, from what I've read, he's going nowhere, his seat's solidly in the red column, he doesn't even need the money

It's a tough division for sure. Hopefully we can take advantage of what LOOKS to be a somewhat light schedule to start out with and gain some sort of comfort zone before the meat of the schedule comes around.

As I understand it, while most (all?) of the Dem. sponsored health care bills deny illegal immigrants coverage, there's no requirement under these bills that eligibility be verified. In fact, an amendment adding that requirement, along with one specifically removing abortion as a covered 'procedure' were both defeated.

In fact, an amendment adding that requirement, along with one specifically removing abortion as a covered 'procedure' were both defeated.
It doesn't matter whether eligibility is verified or not. Right now, under the 1986 Federal EMTALA legislation, all hospitals which receive Medicare payments are required by law to provide emergency medical treatment until the patient is stabilized or gives written permission to be released. Given that virtually all hospitals accept Medicare, this is a defacto nationwide requirement for treatment for critical situations - heart attack, acute allergy, serious injury, delivery and a host of other ailments where denial of such service would cause serious impairment or place the patient in serious jeopardy.
Without explicit changes to this act, no one can be denied treatment under such circumstances, no matter what their citizenship.
And frankly, that's as it should be; the specter of a hospital telling a patient, "Sorry, you're not a citizen, go bleed to death in the street" is too chilling for words. We're just going to have to accept the fact that in these cases, taxpayers are going to be picking up the tab. That's no different at all from what takes place right now, except that it isn't taxpayers but those who pay their own medical bills or who carry insurance who pay the costs for such treatment. It's hard to take issue with this. From a humanitarian standpoint, it's the right thing to do.
More disturbing is the far larger population of patients who come in seeking treatment for headaches, colds, minor cuts and bruises and the host of minor annoyances that daily plague mankind. Although cheaper to treat, there are thousands of times more such cases, and here the drain on taxpayer resources quickly adds up; although a single tiny hole in a bowl isn't too much of a problem, a colander makes for a very poor boat.
The problem is: what to do about it? Requiring proof of citizenship inevitably leads to the issuance of a national ID card of some description, or some other government-operated national database of eligible citizens. Conservatives have long been opposed to such measures for a variety of reasons, beginning with the enormous intrusion of the Federal government into the lives of ordinary, law-abiding citizens they emplace. Allowing such treatment, with the hope that usage will remain small, is foolish; you'll soon be providing medical treatment to the entire Mexican population, and probably a significant chunk of the Canadian population as well, since our current treatment and diagnostic resources are much richer than Canada's and we already attract significant medical business from across that border - we'd attract even more if the services were provided for free.

This is how our despicable NuLab government propses to make savings, and how they treat our soldiers:
Army to force out wounded soldiers
From that link:
'HUNDREDS of British troops, including many injured on frontline duty in Afghanistan and Iraq, are to be eased out of the army in an efficiency drive being overseen by Kevan Jones, the veterans’ minister.
Jones defended the plan yesterday amid claims from senior military sources that it was designed to remove injured and sick “bed blockers” from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) payroll.'
If that is not disgusting, then I don't know what is! Not just the proposal, but the language: 'bed-blockers' are, in NHS-speak, those geriatric patients who rcannot go home because of tehir illness and haven't got a place in a nursing home yet ...
Oh - and just for interest: there is one pen-pusher per two serving military personnel. so kicking 5.000 soldiers out who would get work in their regiments after rehab is of coruse hugely economical.
Pen-pushers are really needed! ///

Morning all.
Just getting in and should be doing other things, but I checkout the thread at VPundit.
Turns out that Stacy McCain came up with a fjordmanesque "3 point" counter attack on Charles.
I expected to find something of a "I did not say this" or a "this accusation is flimsy because ..." type response. You know - because that is how one defends oneself in an argument. Especially when one claims a "3 point" counter.
Well none of that happened. His first point is to assemble some claim of inventing a new logical fallacy which he accuses Charles of, except he doesn't actually explain how Charles is guilty of the fallacy, nor does he explain the fallacy itself. Instead, one gets links to where he first claimed use of said "fallacy" and then you get a long post about "you don't know my friends and family" and therefore cannot call me racist. And then there is the claim that "leftists call anyone a racist. I am not a racist therefore Charles is."
Unreal - accuse someone of a fallacy you invented without specifying how he committed the fallacy and then finish it off with an error in logic that is clear to any student of a logic 101 class.
Point 2 is to defend the South and then accuse anyone attacking him as anti southern. He claims a sort of guilt by association and then goes on to Charge Charles as a "Liberal" because of ... associations.
Then he goes back to defending the South. So he strawmans and then goes ad-populatum. Then he goes for "i'm insulted" "does he think I'm a coward" and the rest.
He should have just linked here and saved the typing.
But in case the appeals to regional separatist fantasy or strawmaning doesn't do it for you - in case that has you still on the fence - he pushes you over by calling Charles godless. It always amazes me how christians who understand the second amendment don't understand the second commandment.
Now if someone were actually to mistake McCain's rambling obfuscation for logic, then point number 3 is for them. Having confused the issues and not addressed the evidence he turns to one of the charges and excuses it as "intemperate" remarks. Hint to planet - intemperate remarks are often the most revealing. That was the standard that Reverend Wright was held to. It is a good standard.
Did I write some things that were . . . intemperate? Hey, we're talking about Stacy McCain here, OK? When I go to fight, I go to war, and it's war to the knife, knife to the hilt.
That is the only defense against a specific item that I can find. Others may find some others, but that is all I could distill from the rambling. Followed by a "Gone With the Wind" citation and this:
A good rule in the blogosphere, really. If you're going to criticize someone, you'd better be ready to annihilate him. So when I was bashing Yankees and scalawags and New York Times know-it-alls back in 1995-96, I did not scruple as to the mode of attack.
So he doesn't really disclaim anything written that Charles summarized. He simply chalks it up to "intemperate" remarks excused because of his need to defend The South.
It is all at his website which isn't hard to find but I won't link to out of courtesy.

This is the kind of Republican flinch reflex -- "Oh, we can't say that, it might make the liberals angry!" -- that annoys the crap out of me. Look, we've all been officially branded "Rightwing Extremists," so what's the point of this fearful, defensive, cringing quest for "respectability"?
Why am I not surprised a racist would hold respectability in disdain?

That was the 'gambling me' that was saying that. Diehard Redskins fan. Passing interest in the Ravens. Grew up in MN so I will always find a place for them. Da Bearzz? They are playing the Packers and I love any team that can beat the packers. I am stoked. I need to go out and mow the lawn before I can get the BBQ going and the festivities started. I don't feel like doing any work though.

This will be considered the weirdest season of all time..
T.O.
Denver and that soap opera
Vick coming back
The Raider's Cable punching out his assistant in Napa.
Tony Romo dumping Jessica
Plex shooting himself in the Leg
I'll bet you could list 100 things easily... Oh Seymour being traded biut he does't report and Bill Bellicheck crying over a player..
I mean the list goes on...
I've been a Bronco fan since the early 70's when my family moved to Denver. I know the lowest lows and highest highs with that team...I think this year will be a little closer to the lowest lows. As for my current home team, the Cardinals. What can I say. I had season tickets for 10 years. I suffered through some pretty bad football in a pretty uncomfortable stadium...but, I was no fair weather fan. Last year was like a dream...I hope they can build on that...

Stop the imminent deportation of ‘apostate’ Hussain Muradi
Your View, September 12th 2009, 4:18 pm
Maryam Namazie asks for urgent action
Stop the imminent deportation of ‘apostate’ Hussain Muradi to Afghanistan
Hussain Muradi, activist of the Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain (CEMB) and One Law for All Campaign, has been detained on September 10, 2009 and is facing imminent deportation back to Afghanistan where he will face the death penalty for ‘apostasy.’
As part of his fight against the Islamists, Hussain has publicly renounced Islam in order to break the taboo that comes with such a renunciation and push for the right to leave religion, particularly crucial given that apostasy is punishable by death under Sharia law.

Mark Steyn: Obama won't surrender in his war of choice
So why can't the silver-tongued post-partisan healer seal the deal on this health care business? Surely it should be the work of moments for the greatest orator in American history to whip up a little medicinal Gettysburg, a touch of Henry V-in-the-Agincourt-casualty-tent, and put this thing away. Yet there he was the other night with the usual leaden medley of tinny grandiosity (all the this-is-the-moment, now-is-the-hour stuff), slippery reassurances (don't worry, you won't be "required" to change your present health arrangements), imputations of bad faith to anyone who takes a different view (they're playing "games"), and the copper-bottomed guarantee that you can have it all for no money down, no interest, no monthly payments, no nuthin' ("I will not sign it if it adds one dime to the deficit").

9/12 Tea Party Protest demonstrates the good, the bad, and the ugly of America
The Good
The Tea Party protesters are actively using their rights of free speech and assembly. Their active participation in the democratic process should be applauded when done in a civil manner.
...
The BadMany of these protesters are simply misinformed. When it comes to issue like "death panels" and now coverage of illegal immigrants these protesters accept what is told to them by Palin, Beck, and Limbaugh as the gospel truth while rejecting everything from every other source.
...
In addition many of the Tea Party protesters seek only to bring down the other side with no realistic solutions of their own.
...l
The UglyThe ugly part of these Tea Party protests are the most extreme elements of the cause. As I documented in an earlier piece many individuals implicitly or explicitly make express racist attitudes toward the President.
Beck fan and 9/12 protest attendee explains why Obama will oppress white America.

re: #307 EmmmieG
Sure, just going by his own words:
So, let’s take a look at the views and not-so-hidden agenda of one of the actual editors of the paper, specifically, assistant national editor Robert Stacy McCain, who has a habit of posting commentary on message boards and elsewhere around the Internet:"[T]he media now force interracial images into the public mind and a number of perfectly rational people react to these images with an altogether natural revulsion. The white person who does not mind transacting business with a black bank clerk may yet be averse to accepting the clerk as his sister-in-law, and THIS IS NOT RACISM, no matter what Madison Avenue, Hollywood and Washington tell us."
Yes, you read that right: a "natural revulsion" and "THIS IS NOT RACISM."
"Revulsion" at the idea of different races associating is "not racism."
McCain can take his primitive hatefulness and get lost.

Boy, Oh, Boy
The normally nonchalant Barack Obama looked nonplussed, as Nancy Pelosi glowered behind.Surrounded by middle-aged white guys — a sepia snapshot of the days when such pols ran Washington like their own men’s club — Joe Wilson yelled “You lie!” at a president who didn’t.
But, fair or not, what I heard was an unspoken word in the air: You lie, boy!

As I said in a previous thread:
There are those who will cling to charges of racism, regardless of the truth set before them; they feel it's their most expedient argument for it exploits basic flaws in the human psyche that civilized behavior has long since buried.
To see racism where it is not is to diminish racism where it is, just as the charge of "Nazi" diminishes the horror and evil of the real thing.
Words and concepts are powerful things and we should use them wisely. Unfortunately, we have not; we have oft wielded these powerful words and concepts capriciously, thus watering them down to an unrecognizable state.
In the future, how will one communicate the nature of unspeakable evil when all of the powerful words have been reduced to jargon?

Fair enough, Coracle. There does need to be more voices saying that.
My problem is it seems any criticism or complaint about President Obama...his decisions, his actions, his anything...is made out to be a problem with his race. I do not think that is the case here in 2009. Are there people on the right with racial issues? Of course there are. But, there are many people on the left with a racial problems as well. I was hoping that having an black President would go a long way in ending our hang up on race, but it appears it has not yet.

Yes, it is nice NOT. There is a way to play upon and move forward with the statement or sentiment without falling in love or canonizing a flawed man. Assuming that Wilson's outburst was an emotional reaction and spur of the moment, that sentiment (not the actual act, which was bad) is very valid and can be moved forth. That takes effort and sustained thought.
Instead, many just go 'Joe's My Hero!' and consider that the most effective means to support their beliefs. That's rife with risk and much less effective than moving forth ideas and concepts, and it's also intellectually lazy.

The line while getting older is still stout and Brady's ability to move in the pocket will give him all the time he needs to get rid of the football and avoid any serious hits. I also expect to see alot more 4-3 line ups by the defense with Adalius Thomas playing the pass rushing outside linebacker.

Yes, and to honest...it's his mentality as well...he still seems pissed off about the trade rumors. This will be his last year here, I think. Too bad, that guy is a super stud. The Cardinals should try to keep him. With Fitzgerald on one side and Boldin on the other...that's a hard team to cover.

It has made us more race obsessed, and not in a good way either.

Dems seek to play down role of public option idea
Obama and the dems are "playing down" the public option. But the public option hasn't gone away. That's the goal. Since day one -that's been the left's goal. They understand that a majority are uncomfortable with Canadian-style health care, so the left understand they must finesse the language so as to fool the masses.
"Insurance Exchange" = "Public Option". The term "public option" has been scrubbed from the Democrat's ever-changing lexicon.

I don't think Wilson a hero and I don't know of his associations. I think that what he said at that particular instant was what a lot of people are feeling. To discount him because of past associations is not possible at that moment in time. Where is the one true, ideologically pure person out there who can criticize The Won? Someone we can all agree on instead of hanging our heads and tut - tutting? I don't know if that person exists?
That construct he laid out in his outburst can be moved forth with or without Joe Wilson. If Wilson is to be used then he needs to be treated cautiously lest his taint bring down the sentiment we all hold dear.

It's one thing for a hospital to work to save the life of someone who's facing a critical, life-threatening illness or injury, and I'd never oppose that.
But to extend, either explicitly or implicitly, basic medical coverage to 12+ million illegal immigrants is insanity, just as allowing the children of 12+ million illegal immigrants access to public schools and access to in-state tuition at colleges across the country is insanity.
You want to cut the number of illegals taking jobs from Americans? Let's up the penalty for hiring them without using the e-verify system. If a business is found to be employing someone here illegally, fine the business $50,000 AND fine the head of the company and the head of the HR department $1,000 plus put them in prison for a week. Let the situation hit their pocket, and affect their lives directly, and maybe we'll see employers taking a closer look at who they're hiring in the name of saving a few bucks.

It would seem that his support firmed among those who might have been thinking he would be weak kneed on health care. So he firmed up his base. Not sure that will last because some sort of a deal has to be worked out and one part or another of his coalition (blue dogs vs. progressives) is going to be disappointed.

If health care passes, and none of the doom and gloom predictions show up by 2012, the conservatives will be in trouble. If it fails to pass, or it passes and turns out badly, the right has a shot. If they lay the entire bill on the Dems, they are putting all the eggs in the failure basket.

I was not a big Bush fan, but attacking him got so commonplace that I got drawn into 'defending" him because I would try to argue down the distortions. If Obama ends up sticking with Afghanistan, I may just end up spending more time defending him than attacking him simply because of the ODS. I am not a fan of the guy and haven't "changed my stripes" but stupidity has to be fought.
Excellent post. I'm pretty much in the same boat. I'm a Rudy supporter, Bush and Obama didn't have much appeal to me but they are both good men who are serving their country and doing their best. I wish more people would recognize that.

re: #443 J.S.
What I find somewhat disturbing is the attempt (by the Obama administration) to make health insurance mandatory...that's a problem, imo...Even here in Canada, it's not health care payments which are made mandatory -- what's mandatory here is Free Medical Care for all citizens -- no citizen or permanent resident of Canada can be denied access to medical care...I think that's a very different idea from demanding that all people have an Insurance Plan...
The reason for the "mandatory" provision is to get rid of those who have a "free ride" on health care. There are folks who will get health insurance when they need some treatment and then drop it afterward. There are others that simply use the emergency room and claim indigence (although there really is no way for a hospital to verify that claim, and they ethically don't refuse people).
So the insurers have to figure the cost of covering the uninsured into the price of insurance. So there is some rationality behind forcing everyone to get a policy. But from the standpoint of "life, liberty and property" making insurance mandatory may not pass constitutional muster (The only reason you can make car insurance mandatory is that driving is a privilege and not a right).

I'm looking through more photos at Flickr, and I absolutely don't believe what I'm seeing here.
People accused me of "cherry-picking?"
There are thousand of disgusting signs on display in these photos! I couldn't possibly post them all if I spent a year doing nothing else. Racism is rampant. Threats of violence. The "tree of liberty must be watered," over and over. Hitler imagery everywhere. Death panels, euthanasia, eugenics.
It's mind-blowing. I knew things were bad, but I'm beginning to realize how bad.
Take some small comfort in the fact that there weren't nearly as many there as the event's boosters are claiming - they seem to be off by a factor of 20 to 30, shattering International ANSWERs typical crowd count inflation of 5 to 8 times by a huge margin.
Although there are still those downstairs who would give you an argument about the smaller numbers, despite their match with reality.

The fact is that nature abhors a vacuum and there is definitely a vacuum in Republican leadership. In frustration, even reasonable people will think "hell yeah!" as an emotional reaction to someone, like Wilson, who verbalizes that frustration. His outburst was tacky and impolitic. To a lot of people, though, a flawed messenger is better than no messenger at all. Sad but true.
The event of yesterday wasn't Nuremberg. The overwhelming majority of those attendees were simply honest citizens, frustrated on a number of fronts and they saw it as a chance for their voice to be heard. They weren't frothing racists and fascists by any means. It's unfortunate that, by their attendance, they were tarred with broad "hateful extremist" brush. I've said this before, and I'll say it again, most of the people out there simply don't know Ron Paul from Les Paul. They aren't people who live and breathe this stuff like many of us here and, while it's important to shine the light on the extremists, we should not discount the motivations of many in in that crowd, who were simply exercising their right of peaceful assembly.
When (if) a credible messenger of the right-of-center appears, people like Ron Paul, Birchers, et al, will be relegated back to the marginal stays from whence they came. At the same time, or in the meantime, eloquent spokesmen (a la the late WFB) should look at some in our midst as reveal the as the parasites that they are.
I have confidence that credible leaders and messengers will come forth because I have a basic and abiding faith in the wisdom of the American people. I grow impatient, but I believe my patence will, eventually, be rewarded.

Canada also has a different way of funding the health care system -- it's through Federal income tax...anyone who's working pays (relatively high) taxes...the money goes to Ottawa, then the Feds divvy up the money (some of which goes in transfer payments to the provinces which in turn funds provincial Health care and education programs, etc.).

If health care passes, and none of the doom and gloom predictions show up by 2012, the conservatives will be in trouble. If it fails to pass, or it passes and turns out badly, the right has a shot. If they lay the entire bill on the Dems, they are putting all the eggs in the failure basket.
Uh - it will take several years to implement. The current health care system is finely tuned to delivering services to those who pay or have insurance. Dump another few tens of millions on the system and it will shatter, with lines out into the streets, hospitals jammed beyond capacity and prices skyrocketing in response to the increased demand. The pipeline to produce new doctors is nearly a decade long; other branches of medical service, between two to six years depending on specialty. It will be at least that long before any system is even partially implemented.
Also, look for the truly awful stuff - vastly increased taxes, severe rationing of care, skyrocketing costs for the type of private insurance 80% to 90% of the country now holds - to be carefully stage-managed to turn south only after 2016, when the current Administration leaves office. The time between now and then will be a "transitional" period, for simple practical reasons mentioned above and for the venal political reasons also discussed.
I'm sure we'll hear more pronouncements like "If it's OK by 2012, it's a success!" from other quarters. It's a meaningless, artificial date utterly divorced from reality.

We are already paying for the uninsured in hidden costs in taxes and added health insurance costs now. The Bush tax cuts for the top brackets will be allowed to expire, and there should be some saving. Where they come up with extra money is different in all the versions of the bill, but I don't expect to get all the added insurance benefits for nothing.

I agree - we are not informed in terms of depth of information, unless we seek it out in places like LGF.
Part of the problem is the MSM has so little credibility anymore - and even if they DO report on things, they often do it in a screeching way that turns people off, and creates that view that various outlets have some sort of agenda.

I'm simply trying to differentiate the motivations of the mass majority of the attendees from organizers. They weren't necessarily "movement" people; they were merely Americans.
Were (are) they poorly informed? Absolutely. Use the word "Paulian" or "Bircher" to a lot of people and they would have no idea of what you are talking about. I've had conversations about Ron Paul with a number of people who hear his sound bites and have favorable impressions - they simply have no in-depth knowledge of who he really is. As for "Birchers", I remember the JBS from back in the day, but a lot of younger people have no knowledge of that history.
I don't defend the pernicious goals of the organizers, but I do defend the innocent (though naive) motivations of many of the attendees.
Having become a nation of sound bites has allowed a lot of people, at both ends of the spectrum, to gain credibility that, with even a scintilla of scrutiny, they would not otherwise have. People have become easily led and that has it's own inherent dangers, and it's wise that sites, such as these, point out those dangers.
I simply do not want to lay wholesale blame on tens of thousands of people whose only motivation was to exercise their right of assembly.

Savings on health care costs.
Raising the tax from 35% to 39% on the top 5% might raise another $50 billion dollars, or 5% of the estimated $1 trillion that is said to be needed for DemCare. Where will the other 95% come from?
