See...this is how good the conspiracy is. The "powers that be" leak just enough info for the conspiracy theorists to believe that vaxes are bad news. It's sheer genius when you think about it. The NWO accomplishes their goal of population reduction while at the same time eliminating the conspiracy theorists who die of whatever it is they refused to get a vaccination to prevent in the first place. With no conspiracy theorists left, the powers can proceed unimpeded.

Mwahahaha.

Study explains bacteria's resistance to antibiotics

A small molecule composed of one atom of oxygen and one of nitrogen plays an important role in helping pathogens resist antibiotics, a new study has found.

The study, led by Evgeny Nudler, professor of biochemistry at New York University Langone Medical Center, and published in Science magazine, provides evidence that nitric oxide (NO) is able to alleviate stress in bacteria caused by many antibiotics and helps it neutralize many antibacterial compounds.

"Developing new medications to fight antibiotic resistant bacteria ... is a huge hurdle, associated with great cost and countless safety issues," Nudler said in a statement.

"Here, we have a short cut, where we don't have to invent new antibiotics. Instead, we can enhance the activity of well established ones, making them more effective at lower doses."

This is the sort of advancements in science that will save lives. It's the sort of advancement in biochemistry that people like Michael Behe hurt with their anti-intellectualism by focusing on disproving evolution. It's the sort of medical advancement people like anti-vaxxers will take advantage of hypocritically- and hurt the rest of the population by increases disease these scientists are trying to fight.

Now, smallpox vaccination was first introduced to the New World by Africans. Do you think the granola wing of the anti-vacc movement would be friendlier to vaccination if they knew it was an old tribal tradition, or would they start trying to do it at home with a quill and knife?

As you can see, it's slightly more complex than that, there are European sources as well. But it's generally agreed that Mather first became aware of the possibilities of vaccination from a slave who described to him how it was done in his homeland.

We begin our history of vaccines and immunization with the story of Edward Jenner, a country doctor living in Berkeley (Gloucestershire), England, who in 1796 performed the world’s first vaccination.4 Taking pus from a cowpox lesion on a milkmaid’s hand, Jenner inoculated an eight-year-old boy, James Phipps. Six weeks later Jenner variolated two sites on Phipps’s arm with smallpox, yet the boy was unaffected by this as well as subsequent exposures.5 Based on twelve such experiments and sixteen additional case histories he had collected since the 1770s, Jenner published at his own expense a volume that swiftly became a classic text in the annals of medicine: Inquiry into the Causes and Effects of the Variolae Vaccine. His assertion "that the cow-pox protects the human constitution from the infection of smallpox" laid the foundation for modern vaccinology.6

How did Jenner, a country doctor, formulate the vaccine concept? To begin with, his discovery relied extensively on knowledge of the local customs of farming communities and the awareness that milkmaids infected with cowpox, visible as pustules on the hand or forearm, were immune to subsequent outbreaks of smallpox that periodically swept through the area. Moreover, a learned man immersed in the secular and rational doctrines of the Enlightenment, Jenner applied the scientific methods of observation and experimentation to this parochial wisdom, ultimately conducting one of the world’s first clinical trials. He thus was able to devise an alternative to variolation (the controlled transfer of pus from one person’s active smallpox lesion to another person’s arm, usually subcutaneously with a lancet), which had been practiced in Asia since the 1600s and in Europe and colonial America since the early 1700s.

It's scary to live in a futuristic world where men in white coats really do know better.

It's a comfort to latch onto the idea that you yourself have superior information, and that those men in white coats are scoundrels and liars or dupes.

Forced to choose between a real but somewhat remote threat to the life of their children, and the constant threat to equanimity that this futuristic world poses, all too many choose equanimity. It's the same syndrome, in another manifestation, that drives the troofers, the guys claiming we never landed on the moon, the guys claiming global warming will lead to massive world-shattering hurricanes weekly [yes, Al Gore, I'm talkin to you], the guys claiming global warming is just a conspiracy of mad scientists [you-all who say that human production of CO2 is insignificant compared to volcanic emissions, I'm talkin to you], nirthers, the folk who insist that man is not related to apes, the squirrels, the dolphins, and the fish, (in successively diminished proximity) the guys who accept the claim that opposition to the Obama agenda is nothing but astroturf, and so forth.

If you feel like you have special inside information that the powers that be are engaged in a near-universal conspiracy to delude the public, which you, happily, have seen through, you feel good.

Addict.

Lady Mary Montague

In 1714, Queen Anne died, bringing the Elector of Hanover to the throne. Her husband, a politician, was rewarded by being appointed Ambassador to Turkey and the young couple set off for the exotic Turkish lands. A perceptive spectator, an adventurous tourist, and a fascinated amateur ethnographer, Lady Mary immersed herself in all things Turkish, even learning the language. She visited the zenanas, meeting the upper class women secluded there, and learning Turkish customs. Her record of her travels, Turkish Embassy Letters, are still considered among the finest specimens of the epistolary genre.

Upon returning home to England, Lady Mary introduced into England the Turkish practice of inoculating healthy children with a weakened strain of smallpox to confer immunity from the more virulent strains of the disease. The dreaded smallpox, which left Lady Mary herself scarred from her 1715 bout with the disease and which killed her brother, often killed its victims or left them scarred or deformed for life. Upon learning of the Turkish practice, Lady Mary immediately had her son inoculated. After returning home to England, she introduced the custom to the nobility by having her daughter inoculated, too. Edward Jenner (1749-1823) would eventually be given credit for the smallpox vaccine, but it was really Lady Mary who pioneered the approach in western Europe and made it acceptable to the influential, the rich and the powerful. Eventually, the practice of inoculation would filter down to the middle and working classes and would be extended to inoculation against a variety of infectious diseases..

As time passed, more and more people were vaccinated against smallpox, until in 1979, the UN World Health Organization declared that smallpox, that perennial killer, had been eradicated throughout the world. Following in the footsteps pioneered by the health professionals fighting smallpox, vaccines for a host of deadly and deforming diseases including mumps, measles, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, and polio were developed and distributed making so many of the infectious diseases which were early childhood killers a thing of the past, at least in the developed and developing world. Millions, possibly hundreds of millions, of people owe their lives or their health or the lifes or health of someone close to them to Lady Mary Wortley Montagu.

Once I was a member of the synagogue that had a significant cadre that was not vaccinating their children, for homeopathic reasons. A number of members who were pediatricians became alarmed and noted that we might be losing our "herd immunity." Eventually Rabbis Moshe Tendler and Bleich (rather authoritative Orthodox experts in Bioethics) weighed in and they ruled that the Jewish law required them to vaccinate; that Jewish practice followed the dictates of science as supported by replicable data, not homeopathic theory. End of story.

69 funky chicken  Mon, Sep 14, 2009 6:30:19pm
Jenner’s interest in natural history and animal biology sharpened his medical understanding of the role of human-animal trans-species boundaries in disease transmission. He experienced the proverbial "Eureka"-like moment sometime during the 1770s, after hearing a Bristol milkmaid boast, "I shall never have smallpox for I have had cowpox. I shall never have an ugly pockmarked face."9 Two decades later he translated that farming lore into the guiding principle of his cowpox inoculation hypothesis. His cognizance that animals were implicated and necessary for vaccine production was truly prescient; it foreshadowed later use of cows, guinea pigs, rabbits, and even chicken eggs in vaccine production. However, this breach of the species barrier also made many people wary of and sometimes hostile to the idea of consciously introducing foreign animal products into their own bodies. During the early 1800s, for example, there was no shortage of cartoons mocking Jenner and depicting the transmogrification of the recently vaccinated into sickly cows and fantastical beasts.10

Beyond cowpox. Although Jenner’s milkmaid experiments may now seem like quaint fables, they provided the scientific basis for vaccinology. This is all the more striking given that our current conceptions of vaccine development and therapy are now much more encompassing and firmly rooted in the science of immunology. Until the brilliant French chemist Louis Pasteur developed what he called a rabies vaccine in 1885, vaccines referred only to cowpox inoculation for smallpox.

Jenner and Pasteur didn't "steal" their ideas from Africa.

totally agree. i fear the moonbats in these pictures (scroll) are going to become the faces of the 9/12 rally [Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...] rather than the 99% of people who weren't doing stuff like that. CNN and LGF itselft are already doing their part.

note: this blog is supposedly 'conservative', but all it's done lately is ### and moan about birthers and creationists and put a lot less effort into pointing out the actions of the real enemies of this country. it used to be really good, but its gone seriously downhill as of late. i just posted it to point out the feelings of those 'without a horse in the race'.

Don't know or (more likely) don't care. They want to have things their way, and they don't think about the damage that might be caused. They see themselves as fighting autism and that means their motives and ends are pure, thus justifying lies and deceit. If this description reminds you of Tea Party fascists and Code Pink commies, that's because those groups walk the same road. It's all about them. Ego is easy, humility is hard.

Thank you for saying that. At the same time, you have to keep in mind the context of what you are saying. Before you pass judgement on parents of kids with autism, keep in mind the unbelievable pain and frustration they feel, and the desperation with which they search for answers.

At the very least, understand that "If this description reminds you of Tea Party fascists and Code Pink commies, that's because those groups walk the same road" is mean, and an unfair characterization of the parents. They aren't self-righteous, they've just had their lives turned upside-down.

re: #159 cliffster

Thank you for saying that. At the same time, you have to keep in mind the context of what you are saying. Before you pass judgment on parents of kids with autism, keep in mind the unbelievable pain and frustration they feel, and the desperation with which they search for answers.

At the very least, understand that "If this description reminds you of Tea Party fascists and Code Pink commies, that's because those groups walk the same road" is mean, and an unfair characterization of the parents. They aren't self-righteous, they've just had their lives turned upside-down.

Fair enough. What I said was fairly harsh and probably too much for most such people. It's fears of things like autism ans other chronic that lead me to forswear love, marriage, or children. I could never play a long term support role in a case like that. Sooner or later, I'd get frustrated and flounce out the door. That speaks ill of me, I know, but I know myself well.

Amazing come back from the Pats. Down 11 with something like 4 minutes left in the game, They scored two touchdowns, with the the go-ahead TD with less than a minute left in the game to go ahead by 1 (they just missed the 2 point conversion).

Brady is back.

I know people who had Polio. My mother always said that the announcement of the polio vaccine, which came in around the time my sister was born, was the most joyous news she'd ever heard. Her best friend as an adult was a polio victim; her best friend as a child had died of whooping cough.

Only people who have been spoiled in the aftermath of the tremendous advances in preventative medicine since the 1940s could oppose routine vaccination of children.

My question is, why do you take the kickoff out of the endzone with a five point lead? Take a knee. Run the ball a couple of times. Get the first down - over. Don't get it? Punt, and the Pats have < 1 minute to get a touchdown with no timeouts.

Instead, they are down and have 30 seconds to march down the field themselves.

Inoculation, hereafter referred to as variolation, was likely practiced in Africa, India, and China long before the 18th century, when it was introduced to Europe (9). In 1670, Circassian traders introduced variolation to the Turkish “Ottoman” Empire. Women from the Caucasus, who were in great demand in the Turkish sultan's harem in Istanbul because of their legendary beauty, were inoculated as children in parts of their bodies where scars would not be seen. These women must also have brought the practice of variolation to the court of the Sublime Porte (4, 10).
Variolation came to Europe at the beginning of the 18th century with the arrival of travelers from Istanbul. In 1714, the Royal Society of London received a letter from Emanuel Timoni describing the technique of variolation, which he had witnessed in Istanbul. A similar letter was sent by Giacomo Pilarino in 1716. These reports described the practice of subcutaneous inoculation; however, they did not change the ways of the conservative English physicians.
It was the continued advocacy of the English aristocrat Lady Mary Wortley Montague (Figure (Figure22) that was responsible for the introduction of variolation in England (10). In 1715, Lady Montague suffered from an episode of smallpox, which severely disfigured her beautiful face. Her 20-year-old brother died of the illness 18 months later. In 1717, Lady Montague's husband, Edward Wortley Montague, was appointed ambassador to the Sublime Porte. A few weeks after their arrival in Istanbul, Lady Montague wrote to her friend about the method of variolation used at the Ottoman court. Lady Montague was so determined to prevent the ravages of smallpox that she ordered the embassy surgeon, Charles Maitland, to inoculate her 5-year-old son. The inoculation procedure was performed in March 1718. Upon their return to London in April 1721, Lady Montague had Charles Maitland inoculate her 4-year-old daughter in the presence of physicians of the royal court.

The regular practice of variolation reached the New World in 1721 (9). Under the guidance of the Rev. Cotton Mather (1663–1728) and Dr. Zabdiel Boylston (1679–1766), variolation became quite popular in the colonies. Mather, a graduate of Harvard College, was always very interested in science and medicine. When a ship from the West Indies carried persons sick with smallpox into Boston in 1721, an epidemic broke out in Boston and other parts of Massachusetts. Mather wrote a cautious letter recommending immediate variolation. However, he persuaded only Dr. Boylston. With Mather's support, Boylston immediately started a variolation program and continued to inoculate many volunteers, despite many adversaries in both the public and the medical community in Boston. As the disease spread, so did the controversy around Mather and Boylston (12). At the height of the epidemic, a bomb was thrown into Mather's house.
To make their point, Mather and Boylston used a statistical approach to compare the mortality rate of natural smallpox infection with that contracted by variolation. During the great epidemic of 1721, approximately half of Boston's 12,000 citizens contracted smallpox. The fatality rate for the naturally contracted disease was 14%, whereas Boylston and Mather reported a mortality rate of only 2% among variolated individuals (12). This may have been the first time that comparative analysis was used to evaluate a medical procedure.

[Link: www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov...]

I recall despising Lyle Alzedo in the early 1980s... although as a very young kid, I met Killer Lawrence at dinner when my parents decided to eat out... they happened to eat out at the hotel where the Raiders were staying to play the Seahawks the next day. I was loudly complaining and refusing to eat my vegetables, when Killer Lawrence came to the table to ask what the problem was. When told, Killer promised me that if I ate my veggies I would grow up to be as big and strong as him. He also convinced me to root for the Raiders against the Seahawks (the only time I actually did)... of course, the Seahawks ended up blowing out the Raiders (and I am still waiting to grow up to be as big and strong as Killer Lawrence).

Nice to meet you too.

I broke off contact with them rather abruptly after college, because I'd come out about how I felt about guys during my fourth year at UVa, and they were super-ultra born-again Christians and just incredibly clueless about homosexuality. Not mean or anything -- just clueless, and I had to get away from them for a while. Then "a while" turned into a dozen years of no contact, which I rationalized as normal because I was a military brat and was accustomed to losing touch with friends every 2-4 years.

ANYWAY, I'm overjoyed to be back in regular communication with them via Facebook, but the vaccination issue is one of those topics I've been dancing around, because one of my friends happens to have an autistic son, and I'm a little scared of the possibility that my friend might turn out to be anti-vaccine kooks. Of course I know that it's silly of me to worry about THIS issue, given that I was entirely willing to put up with their belief in the pre-Tribulation ~*RAPTURE*~™ and Young Earth Creationism back in the day (They're over that now. At least the Rapture part...), so it's not like I would stop loving them if they did turn out to be anti-vaccine nutters. But still, it would be such a relief to find out that this is ONE wart I don't have to deal with!

I don't mean to completely hijack this thread, but, well OK I do a little... It's now my birthday.

How could anybody be stupid enough to beleive vaccines are a bad thing? what about the diseases themselves? Idiots.

If vaccines stopped containing thiomersal in 2002, presumably those that thought thiomersal was causing autism, regardless of whether or not it actually was, would have stopped their anti-vaccination campaigns back in 2002. Yet that doesn't seem to have happened. And now, I'm not even sure what such people want. If thiomersals removal didn't satisfy them, what will? Do vaccines have to contain the anti-matter counterpart to thiomersal before they'll be satisfied?

Autism lends itself very well to conspiracy theories. The condition does not manifest itself immediately, or at least not in a conspicuous manner. Then usually around the child's second birthday regression occurs. The child may lose the ability to speak, become quite violent, lose interest seemingly in everything, and start hand flapping etc.

Because the child often appeared normal to the parents, before the regression, they often search for an event which occurred directly before it. Ah it happened soon after that vaccination. Post hoc ergo propter hoc.

On the web a community forms of like-minded people. It spreads into the medical community. Parent have their children chelated, some improve, the chelation is given the credit, instead of normal development and people become even more convinced it is the vaccines. Most of the doctors are not trying to defraud the parents of an autistic child, they truly believe they are helping.

Stories spread and while data is not the plural of anecdote, they often have a strong impact on parents who are very worried over their child's future.

It is a very sad situation.

Novella is one sharp individual who cares very much that people receive accurate medical information. I really like him.

re: #187 Alouette

Of course I am going to ride the bus! You think I am going to walk? I won't ride in one of those "mehadrin" buses even though I am Hasidic. I think that is just nuts.

Ok let me explain it. First warning was related to the Intifada...thanx to the security barrier this is not such a problem anymore, but the second...some Israeli and especially bus drivers tend to gesticulate a lot while talking.
So talking with them while driving is not recommended ;) - I died a hundreds deads out of fear just because of this.

A small joke gone wrong, mkay?

Re 239,240.
Two families I know of would disagree with you.
If it wasn't/isn't thiomersal then what is causing
the reactions/deaths/autism etc?
The USA has spent millions on pay outs for vaccine damaged cases.
Yes vaccines can work - but...and here is the question
what actually is causing all the medical mayhem?
Vaccinating kids too young - too much in them - what?( name calling isn't going to solve it)
Is anyone trying to find out?Yes I know there has been studies and yet people still are getting damaged. So it must be something else right? (What?)
In my country they did a study to find out the main causes of what was causing meningitis spikes- they concluded that it was overcrowding and the ususal poor lower social economic situations etc etc.The government made policy to improve living conditions etc etc - all bright and cherry. That was then thrown in the too hard basket and they decided to vaccinate the whole of the country's school children.
Result - quite a number of schools closed down for a while because the kids were too sick - some died.My cousin's kids were vaccinated - his son just died recently from meningitis.
What has changed that is causing all this mayhem damage? Anyone...???
