Another Idiot Brings Guns to an Obama Rally

Another fool who seems to think it’s completely appropriate to show up at a presidential rally with two loaded weapons: Protester defends bringing guns to Obama rally.

If this kind of insanity keeps up, it’s only a matter of time before something bad happens.

Josh Hendrickson left his children at home Saturday and went to downtown Minneapolis, where President Obama was scheduled to speak, carrying two loaded pistols — one in a holster under his camo shirt and another in a back pocket. He spent the next seven hours standing in front of Target Center, he said, not to cause trouble, but to make a point.

“The Second Amendment isn’t suspended just because the president’s in town,” said Hendrickson, 32, who said he showed police at Obama’s health care rally his license to carry and conceal a weapon under state law. …

Hendrickson said he was questioned by Minneapolis police and a Secret Service agent after he said they spotted the outline of his weapon. Hendrickson said he carried a .40 caliber Glock 22 handgun concealed in a holster on his hip, and a smaller Kel Tec 380 in a pocket. …

“I’m a pretty laid-back guy that loves his kids and his country,” Hendrickson said. He added, however, that he had just been released from jail a month earlier on an assault charge for pepper-spraying a customer at a Cub Foods in Brooklyn Center, where he worked as a security guard.

I'm a big fan of the 2nd Amendment, but still - what is the point of this? To send moderates screaming for the hills? Obama is screwing up plenty on his own imho; why distract from the real issues by engaging in the obviously distasteful practice of bringing weapons to Presidential rallies?

And wouldn't the Secret Service, even after interviewing him, still have to assign someone to keep an eye on this guy? Obviously you can't just assume he's going to stand there peacefully. Even if you are entirely well-meaning and just making a crude political statement, you're making it that much harder for our President to be protected by a finite Secret Service staff.

In Texas, having your concealed weapon "print" in front of a cop is a great way to potentially end up 'splainin' yourself to a judge.

There are also any number of places YOU CAN'T GO ARMED, and these are easily identified if you read the rules when you took the course for your permit.

You have to be some kind of stoopid to go to a Presidential appearance ARMED after all the negative stories (other idjits and death threats) and get caught because you're doing it wrong.

EPIC FAIL, and thanks, dumbass. Eight years of propaganda under Clinton about gun owners, and you have to be the exception that will be used to beat me over the head.

I'm sorry- I've seen a large number of take downs in stores for shop lifting- including liquor stores. At no point have I ever seen a person get pepper-sprayed for it. And if he served time for it- there's probably a reason.

Good point. It doesn't say if he'd been convicted, served time, etc. Just that he'd been released from jail. Suppose it could have merely been the time he spent during the booking process. Still...that, combined with this boneheaded stunt, should make people sit up and take notice I'd think.

BTW, you don't have to be obviously printing to be made by the Secret Service. Those guys are good at what they do.

Another point, pocket carry is perfectly normal and safe with the proper gun and/or pocket holster.

That goes back to my point that "released from jail" =! "served time".

You can get tossed in jail and then let out if the charges don't stick. It happened to a friend of mine who was accused of assault (didn't do it). When sheriffs are called in these parts, someone is taking a ride in the car. Took him 26 hours to get RELEASED FROM JAIL ... the DA would not file charges based on a lack of evidence.

Cops ain't lawyers or judges.

It just said he had been released from jail on the assault charge, not that he had been convicted of it and/or served time. My guess was that he was released after being arrested, taken to jail, and (maybe) charged.

Hendrickson was just released from jail on a charge of assault. Although the article does not explicitly say Hendrickson was convicted, he does say that the incident "cost him is job and 60 days in jail". The clear implication is that the 60 days was a sentence, i.e., he was indeed convicted. It is a felony for anyone convicted of assault (even misdemeanor assault) to possess a firearm in Minnesota.

It might have been his sentence. Maybe charges were dropped after time served.

I attended the event on Saturday (as an observer outside the Target Center) in Minneapolis and the protesters were well behaved. There were a few morons from both the right and left but overall people were respectful and there were a lot of civil conversations where people expressed their concerns. The police from Minneapolis, St. Paul and other surrounding cities did a very nice job handling the crowd. I did not see the idiot with the gun.

The kid will probably be prosecuted under Maryland's asinine "sympathy for criminals" laws. Here in this godforsaken state, we have something called the "duty to retreat". Do you guys know what that is? It means if your home is invaded by an intruder, and you have a gun, you are required to beat a retreat if doing so would get you to safety. Even if the intruder is armed or you suspect he might be.

So, if you're in your first-floor bedroom, and fail to jump out the window, but instead shoot the guy, YOU can be prosecuted. This is one of the 132,687 reasons I will soon be moving away not only from Harm City but from Maryland altogether. I just shook hands on my new house last Friday.

I have no doubt the bleeding hearts will try to make an example of this student.

Here's the applicable Minnesota law on the subject (and a FAQ):

5. What are the requirements for getting a permit to carry?

*Must be at least 21 years of age
*Must complete an application form
*Must not be prohibited from possessing a firearm under Minnesota Statute 624.714
*Must not be listed in the criminal gang investigation system
*Must be a resident of the county from which you are requesting a permit, if you reside in Minnesota. Non-residents may apply to any Minnesota county sheriff.
*Must provide certificate of completed authorized firearms training. Training by a certified instructor and completed within one year of an original or renewal application. (624.714, Subd. 2a)

14. What would prevent me from getting a permit to carry?
Any applicant who does not meet the criteria as listed in number 5 above is not eligible for a permit to carry a pistol. The sheriff may also deny the application if there is a substantial likelihood that the applicant is a danger to himself/herself or others if issued a permit to carry.

It does not look as though a conviction is enough to revoke a concealed carry permit in the State of Minnesota. However, Mr. Hendrickson may be subject to the last part of this given his behavior at the Obama rally.

Did anyone demand an apology when the Democrats booed President Bush in 2007? Hell no, they were considered "patriots" and celebrated as such. And it's funny to see Clyburn prattle on about setting agood example when you have your Pelosis, Rangel and the like. And why all the race-baiting? Good sweet Christ in a sidecar, can't anyone speak out against a black person without being likened to the KKK or worse?

I'm a big fan of the 2nd Amendment, but still - what is the point of this? To send moderates screaming for the hills? Obama is screwing up plenty on his own imho; why distract from the real issues by engaging in the obviously distasteful practice of bringing weapons to Presidential rallies?

And wouldn't the Secret Service, even after interviewing him, still have to assign someone to keep an eye on this guy? Obviously you can't just assume he's going to stand there peacefully. Even if you are entirely well-meaning and just making a crude political statement, you're making it that much harder for our President to be protected by a finite Secret Service staff.

I think one negative side effect of people saying that something is 'a privilege, not a right' is that we tend to assume that rights are something to show arrogance about. Some of these guys--it's like they think the Second Amendment's there to offer them a chance to run around acting like fools and scream "I've got a right!" if anyone challenges them.

What these idiots are doing is very much wrong. I am positive that the Secret Service is discussing the error of their thinking at this very moment. The second amendment, as much as I agree with it, does not guarantee the right to be a threat to the POTUS. They don't realize it yet, but this will haunt them for the remainder of their lives. Unfortunately, this part of the story will be missed by everyone watching, as all too often, people fail to see the end or consequences of the story. By the way, I am certain that all of you know someone in some level of law enforcement. Shop this idea around that it's O.K. to do what these idiots are doing, use a stop watch to see how long it takes them to stop laughing or lecturing, (depending on their temperament.)

If you look into the history of the right wing's demonization of the Southern Poverty Law Center, it's pretty clear that smear campaign against them was launched because they were exposing the many connections of right wing politicians and pundits to racist and white supremacist groups.

Connections that are real and factual and proven. Connections such as we see with Robert Stacy McCain and others who are now being held up as wonderful people by the right wing blogosphere.

The hatred directed against the SPLC is a direct consequence of how effective they have been.

It's beyond shameful that organizations such as those leap on to the coat tails of what could have been great movements; at least they seemed to be great at first, and could have made great headway.

Hm.
We do bring them in at night, IF they want. Sometimes they want to stay out and that's cool. We haven't lost one yet. We have more of a problem with raccoons and opossums, and the occasional urban fox. I've never seen a coyote, and the foxes leave the cats alone.

I'm not defending the honor of Joe Wilson. Frankly a vote to continue flying the confederate flag would be enough to disqualify him from ever receiving my vote. But I was specifically responding to the assertion that his outburst was racially motivated based on past/recent/still current (I'm asking because I have no clue) membership in a single organization.

The Tea Party infested Paulian Republicans have some very powerful fantasies about civil war. It's not just rhetoric. They actually want to rise up against our government. Of course anything they try won't get more than a handful of militia members to hold up on a farm somewhere.


Given that the militia members likely to join in such an act are likely inflating the number of attendees of the 9/12 DC Tea Party, it does not seem all that unreasonable to think that their own estimates as to how many people would rise up with them are similarly inflated.

If you show up to a Presidential event with a gun, the Secret Service has to pay attention to you. Because you present a clear threat - and you intended to. "I am armed; don't mess with me or you'll be sorry."

They also would have to consider that you might be there, in all your obviousness, to provide a distraction so that some co-conspirator could act.

For over a decade, Mrs. Brady pushed for gun control legislation that was eventually passed, dubbed the Brady Bill.

I can't disagree with you in large part, but there are exceptions to every rule. I wouldn't carry a weapon to a political rally these days, or I think any day.

That simple; and if it was surgically attached to me, I wouldn't go. I'd watch the show on TV instead.

So taking in mind that a 7.62x51mm NATO has a maximum range up to around 2 miles...you are talking about 6 to 8 miles...both ways.
So by 8 miles radius a safety area of 201 square miles (113 by 6 miles) around the potus in its center is what you are talking about.

Well I really think that is far from possible in any urban area...if you would not suggest to outlaw every gun, would you?

So why would you defend this moron when he makes a point of parading around with firearms at a presidential rally?

I've mentioned this before -- I took ROTC in high school, and the gun safety instructor was a crusty old retired Army guy. He would have taken fools like this aside and whipped them to within an inch of their lives.

This kind of behavior is absolutely NOT the behavior of a responsible gun owner. It's the behavior of an attention-seeking idiot. And it does not deserve your defense.
