From a link that EE posted in the spin-offs.
I think it deserves some attention.
But they knew they were angry, felt they had little say within the two existing parties and were worried most of all about how their tax dollars were being spent -- all the same hallmarks of today's movement. It's highly likely, in fact, that some folks who were Perotistas then are Tea Party Patriots now.
And that suggests a few lessons to remember:
These aren't partisan movements. The Perot followers were first angry at the first President Bush, then later easily transferred some of that anger to a Democratic president, Bill Clinton. Mostly they were mad at the establishment. Eventually, in fact, many ultimately focused their anger on Mr. Perot himself, after they came to believe he was trying to manipulate them. Which leads to lesson No. 2:
Movements like these aren't easy to control. If a citizen is motivated by anger that the government is trying to control his life, he isn't likely to easily accept the idea that some other person or institution is trying to control him, either. Some of today's insurgents are angry at bank bailouts, some at the government takeover of auto companies, some at the prospect of a bigger government role in health care -- but the unifying characteristic is that they are angry at any kind of central control at all. Republicans who think they can harness Tea Party Patriots and their anger may be in for a rude surprise of their own.
I think this is an important insight into "tea-party" phenomena.
What makes Beck different from Perot is that Beck pointedly is refusing the kind of political leadership of the movement that Perot sought.
The movement will not turn on Beck the same way the Perotistas turned on Perot.

Ween is just somewhat traumatic for me. When one of my friends in high school got his new car, he promptly threw a Ween tape in it which wouldn't eject. It also wouldn't play more than one song - it was one of those "smart" tape decks that could rewind or fast foward based on the stops between tracks. We spend a whole night driving around listening to "Push the Little Daisies" and trying to get the damn tape to eject.

Pretty happy with tonight's outing at Fenway overall. Dice-K looked good, despite not starting in the bigs since June. Papelbon kind of phoned it in during the 9th, but Boston got the win (just not the shutout).
Probably a little late in the season to be thinking about it, but the Sox gained some ground on the Yankees in the division race and pulled further away from Texas in the Wild Card chase tonight. Kinda hope they get it in their heads that they can win the divison even tho' there's less than 20 games left right now.

Right now, looks like the AL Central pennant race might be interesting, since at the moment, it's the closest of all the races (Detroit on top with the Twins 4 and a half games behind and the White Sox a game behind Minnesota).
/getting spoiled by all of these one-game playoffs at the start of each October.
66 | Fenway_Nation Wed, Sep 16, 2009 2:11:19am |
Here we go...the White Sox, Tigers and Twins are currently within 5 games of each other and play each other twice each before the end of the season.
The next closest team to Boston in the Wild Card is Texas, but they've been slipping. The closest team after that in the WC chase is actually Seattle at 12 games out. If the Twins or White Sox want to make the postseason, it will have to be as the AL Central pennant winner, since they're even further behind the Mariners in the Wild Card standings.

The Blog Wars: Charles Johnson Takes on Robert Spencer for Associating with Extremists
This is the same dinner which the English Defense League were invited to, as Adrian Morgan of Family Security Matters (another extreme right wing group) admits in an attempted defense of Robert Spencer, “The EDL had been invited to the George pub.” Robert Spencer wants us to believe that all this is a coincidence and is crying that he is a victim of guilt by association, which is quite rich considering how, as we have demonstrated, Spencer traffics in nothing but guilt by association. I guess this time it’s a case of Spencer not being able to take his own medicine?
Spencer responds to the accusation by Charles Johnson with a searing salvo of cheap shots and name calling. Is that any way to act for an “objective scholar?” He calls him “libelblogger,” “lying scoundrel” and calls those who are member’s of LGF “cult members.”
Robert Spencer seems to still be fuming at being outed by Charles Johnson, who many in the anti-Muslim blogsphere think of as a “traitor” for exposing Spencer’s proclivity to be an apologist for fascists as well as his joining a genocidal Faceebook club.

Razorbacker cusses for the first time (out loud).
About a year ago, I told the story of how Mom and Dad came to own a houseboat, and the trip up from Greenville, Mississippi to our base of operations at Weber. This is what happened later.
We found that the houseboat wasn’t in as bad shape as we’d thought. Sure, the top of the transom was rotten, as well as some of the spots where the metal furnishings attached, and yeah, the house part of the boat was pretty well trash, but the actual hull was in fair shape. In fact, after we’d strapped a few 8 by 8s to a lowboy and backed the lowboy into the water and floated the houseboat onto it and used a Cat to pull it out of the water we were able to make the hull completely seaworthy with the replacement of no more than thirty percent of the wood.
We pulled all the boards from the house frame and used some thin cypress to replace them and put a new roof on and we were good to go. Except for the interior. We refloated the boat and were ready to finish up the rebuild.
It was a family affair; Mom and Dad, I, my little sister and my three younger brothers. Summertime in southeastern Arkansas on the bayou brings more mosquitoes and gnats than you can stand, so we were motoring down the bayou towards Jacks Bay to generate a gentle breeze. Mom was in back running the motor; Dad was inside working on the ‘house’ and called for a plank to be passed into the interior. Mom went up front; I climbed onto the top to pass down a plank, and she hand-over-handed the plank to find the balance point. While swinging the plank around to stick it into the open window, the end of the plank happened to touch the water. The plank touched the corner of the house and acted as a lever to heave Mom over the side into the bayou. A ‘splash’, and my baby brother sang out “Mom overboard”.
Mom came up sputtering water, Dad tore out of the ‘house’, kicked off his shoes and dived in to rescue Mom. Little Sister, now at the controls, first shoved the throttle to ‘full’, realized her mistake, and pulled back to ‘full stop’. I bailed off the roof onto the back deck and watched Mom crawl onto a sandbar, followed by Dad. Sis, not realizing that you don’t choke a warm engine, pulled out the choke and attempted to restart the motor. There we were. The five of us kids still on the boat floating downstream, Mom and Dad on the sandbar.
92 | razorbacker Wed, Sep 16, 2009 3:23:39am |
I was cranking the now-flooded motor. Dad watched me for a while, then called out, “Son, start the damned boat and come get us!” Now I was in a pickle for sure. Mom and Dad stranded on the sandbar, me stranded on the houseboat with my four siblings. Tempers flared, and without thinking it through I shouted the first thing that came to mind. The first profanity that I’d ever let slip in front of my mother.
“If I could start the motherfucker I would start the son-of-a-bitch but the damned shit is flooded and is gonna be flooded for the next half-hour. You know that, and I know that.”
Well. As we floated around the bend out of sight I could see that I’d broken my poor mother’s heart. She turned to Dad and buried her face in his chest and her shoulders starting heaving in sobs, with a strange ‘Hee, hee, hee” cry that sounded almost like muffled laughter. Dad stood open mouthed, and with eyes the size of silver dollars gaped in astonishment. My sister dead-panned, “Boy, are you gonna get it.”
“Yeah. But not for at least a half-hour. Shut up.”
I did what I should have done in the first place and went up front and dropped the anchor. We came to a lazy stop and sat swinging at rest. The engine eventually caught and we slowly motored back upstream around the bend and there Mom and Dad sat on the sand with their arms over each other’s shoulders. I guess that they’d been exercising or something to pass the time because they were both a little out of breath, and Mom had sand all up her back but they were none the worse for the adventure.
I nosed the boat up to the sand, they hopped on board and we stood looking at each other with that ‘now what’ expression. Dad shrugged, I smiled apologetically, Mom walked back and ruffled my hair and kissed me on the cheek.
We all went back to work, and nothing further was said.
But that story got told, later. Repeatedly told.
And that’s it, folks. See y’all later.

No. They didn't tell me anything actually. My Mom scheduled me for a regular checkup since it's been way too long since I had one. I just assume blood work is part of that.
98 | Cannadian Club Akbar Wed, Sep 16, 2009 3:36:10am |
I had to do a blood test once. The nurse told me I had to fast. I said " that sucks. I have to go all day at work without eating." She said I should come in the morning after sleeping all night. I should wear a helmet.

The Rise of the Machines: The two daughters each get laptops from the high school (but, alas, no internet access outside school, and no facebook access in school.) Breathe in deeply through your mouth, starting at the bottom of your diaphragm, for the count of five. Hold it for five. Breathe out through your nose, exhaling from the bottom of your diaphragm and upward, for five. Count to five. Repeat. If you're doing it correctly, you should start relaxing in about 20 repetitions.

The Venezuelan leader is already dismissing critics' concerns over his nuclear ambitions, offering assurances his aims are peaceful and that Venezuela will simply be following in the footsteps of other South American nations using atomic energy.
Yet his project remains in its planning stages and still faces a host of practical hurdles, likely requiring billions of dollars, as well as technology and expertise that Venezuela lacks.
Russia has offered to help bridge that gap, and Chavez has announced that the two countries have created an atomic energy commission.
"I say it before the world: Venezuela is going to start the process of developing nuclear energy, but we're not going to make an atomic bomb, so don't be bothering us afterward ... (with) something like what they have against Iran," Chavez said Sunday.
Well, that assures me!

I wonder if the local cops will take a renewed interest in her husband's murder.

Let's see, the President wants a troop surge in Afghanistan (even though the surge in Iraq would not work.)
He wants to extend Patriot Act provisions.
The FBI seems very busy investigating potential terrorist plots: methinks someone has very effective surveillance.
And Pat Buchanon has linked the far left and far right Troofers.
If, God forbid, there is another major terror attack in the States, way too many people will question whether the Feds made it happen.
And Barack Obama will wind up defending...

Wife calls me, "Sweetheart, this don't look too good."
'Fridge door won't shut completely. I grab it, heave up and it will shut. As long as you don't open it again, all is well.
I dig out the manual. What? Don't y'all have an old steamer trunk with the warranty and manual of every single thing that you ever bought? Anyways, there is only four parts that possibly could be broken down there, all of them look like they can't possibly be expensive.
Now all I have to do is go to town, hope that the repair place has the parts, come home and unload all the stuff out of the door shelves, remove the door and replace the parts, then put all the stuff back.
I'd call the appliance repairman, but he charges $75 bucks to drive out, look at the problem with a puzzled expression, tell me he ain't got that part on the truck and will have to come back later (at the cost of another $75).
Breathe. Just breathe. After all, the darned thang has been running just fine for 17 years. Something was bound to happen.

Nah, he's a nice guy. Not one of the engineers working on this project.
A story I heard... can not provide a link... dammit...
Henry Ford used to go into junk yards and look at Fords that had been there for a few years. He would examine the parts of the cars and determine which ones were lasting long beyond the life of the cars.
For example, if the radiator was still in pristine shape after the car had been in the junkyard for five years, then he could make the radiators "less good" and save money.

Well you see, my baby has already decided that the next 'fridge will be one of those 'side by side with the freezer at the bottom' ones. I've gone and looked at them. If I spend that much for something, I want it to do 0 to 60 in under 8 seconds.
Know what? I wouldn't put it past her to have been swinging from the door handle to try to break the damned thing.
I won't save much on electric. A: I don't have any kids that stand in front of the open door while mentally reciting 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner'. B: We have cheap electric rates. I'm still a bit disappointed that we see no significant savings from replacing a 15 year old heat pump. So C: the time value of money means that the pittance saved on electric will pale compared to the wad-o-cash that I spend right now.

If I could expect savings like that, it'd be different.
But I know where my electricity goes. Heating the spa, a 42" plasma (I don't think that the new LCD TV uses much. It stays way too cool), computers running 24/7/365, and electric water heater (only real option for now, no natural gas and propane is pretty pricey), and all those little electric doodads that have the led that never goes off.

When the electric company came out for the energy audit before selling me the new heat/cooling pump they said that I wouldn't really see that much of an improvement on electricity. Tight new windows, thick walls well insulated, etc.
I heat with wood. Heating is the real cost. That's about as cheap as it gets around here, unless you are one of the fortunate ones with a gas well on the place.

Race no longer called factor in bus attack
Cracker Barrel Beating May Be Hate Crime
If you are a slack jawed, violent idiot intent on beating someone up - don't use racial epithets.
*For the record I think both cases should be persecuted to the full extent of the law but don't see race as a primary cause for the violence regardless of how racist the perps may be.

45% Of Doctors Would Consider Quitting If Congress Passes Health Care Overhaul
Two-thirds, or 65%, of doctors say they oppose the proposed government expansion plan. This contradicts the administration's claims that doctors are part of an "unprecedented coalition" supporting a medical overhaul. It also differs with findings of a poll released Monday by National Public Radio that suggests a "majority of physicians want public and private insurance options," and clashes with media reports such as Tuesday's front-page story in the Los Angeles Times with the headline "Doctors Go For Obama's Reform."
Nowhere in the Times story does it say doctors as a whole back the overhaul. It says only that the AMA — the "association representing the nation's physicians" and what "many still regard as the country's premier lobbying force" — is "lobbying and advertising to win public support for President Obama's sweeping plan."
The AMA, in fact, represents approximately 18% of physicians and has been hit with a number of defections by members opposed to the AMA's support of Democrats' proposed health care overhaul.

I think the 60-70k claimed by the MSM is probably low. Didn't BBC or the London Times or some other UK media outlet estimate closer to 1 million?
He also said that the majority of the signs weren't anything like the 'Obama=Hitler' signs. Sadly, in any mass protest, you'll have some people who are nuts, whether it's the Birthers or the 'troothers'.

Indonesian adulterers to be stoned to death
Adulterers will be stoned to death under draconian new laws passed in the Indonesian province of Aceh yesterday.
Hardline Muslim politicians in the semi-autonomous region unanimously passed the Sharia edict, under which single people will also be given 100 lashes for pre-marital sex, just weeks before a new, more moderate government dominated by the Aceh Party is due to take power.
Although the administration of Governor Irwandi Yusuf had opposed the legislation, when the chairman of the 69-seat regional parliament asked if the bill could be passed into law its members answered in unison: "Yes, it can."

I'm getting ready to order a copy of The Kid's math book from the publisher so that I can help him out better--I gotta' read the stuff. He has a big test Friday coverng such things as front-end estimation and regrouping and the like. The next chapter is flat-out algebra. They had introduction to algebra last year.
I already have a copy of his science book--I asked his teacher for a copy of the book they used last year but, they replace the texts every other year. I'm not gonna' get a copy of his English text book because it's made by the same folks who published my sister's college freshman text book--the successors to Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, and it roughly follows the same format although at a slower rater. Plus, I know the subject matter already.

No. She didn't even acknowledge what happened in the first press conference. I'm sick of Serena evading any criticism for her bad behavior because of "racism." Rudeness is rudeness. I don't care what color your skin is. Not only that, but the attitude she brings to tennis is disgusting. Whenever she loses, she mopes in the post-match conference and blames it on her condition -- never compliments her opponents or admits defeat by something other than herself. This tirade of hers is only another thing I'll add on to my list of things I dislike about her personality. Don't even get me started on her actual tennis game.

From what Rob said and from what the UK media said, I'd go closer to the 600k range, but that could easily be miles off.
Beck said 1.7 mil, the left says fewer and the right says more. Either way it must be shocking to the administration. Where did your friend fly in from?

From what I have read the ACORN woman in the recent video did not kill her husband. She is saying now that she was afraid for her safety and she wanted to come off as strong.
In a subsequent telephone conversation on Tuesday, Spach said Kaelke pretended to cooperate with O'Keefe and Giles because she feared for her safety.
"She was in an office all by herself," Spach said. "She felt unsafe in their company."

Johns Hopkins student used samurai sword to kill intruder, police say
BALTIMORE — Baltimore police say a Johns Hopkins University student armed with a samurai sword killed an intruder in his garage.
Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says campus police and an off-duty city officer responding to a call for a suspicious person heard screams to call police around 1:20 a.m. Tuesday.
Guglielmi says the undergraduate student told the man he found in his garage to leave and the man accosted him. That’s when Guglielmi says the student defended himself, cutting off the man’s hand and causing a severe laceration to his upper body.
He says the man died at the scene, but police are not yet releasing his name.

turn's an engineer and I just happened to be showing turnspawn2 how to graph in Excel last night. This kid is so stubborn, he kept insisting he could do a xy plot with a column of colors and a column of numbers! ha, good kid though - he eventually figured it out on his own that a scatter plot is what he needed. These kids are really doing advanced math for their age now days, my biggest problem with them is they refuse to show their work. I was taught to write out every single step, they just jump to the answer. The younger generation wants instant gratification - it can bite you in the long run.

And, speaking of language, this is why I bridle at the term "reverse racism". There is no "reverse"; one who believes in concepts of racial superiority/inferiority is a "racist", full stop, no matter what color he or she is.

Opposition to Health Care Reform Reaches New High at 55%
One week after President Obama’s speech to Congress, opposition to his health care reform plan has reached a new high of 55%. The latest Rasmussen Reports daily tracking poll shows that just 42% now support the plan, matching the low first reached in August.

Many health professionals have given up trying to deal with insurance companies and Medicare/Medicaid rules altogether. Some will only deal with certain private insurance companies because they're easier to work with than others.
I can definitely see more doctors leaving practice or opting to go cash only rather than be forced to accept less money for their services.
And if doctors indeed leave the practice, who will cover the millions more who are going to be coming into coverage under any of the plans floated.
Supply and demand are at play here, and the plans proffered by Democrats don't seem to recognize that basic concept.

My M's will be much further back that the 12 we currently are, in no time. It has been a long and frustrating summer with the M's. We all gave up hope when we let Washburn go to the Tigers, but then somehow we continued to hang in the Wild Card race for a little while longer.

Racism is racism. Supporting or opposing someone just due to the color of skin is racism. Promoting or firing someone because of their sex is sexism. Reverse racism is a PC term to use when the majority in aggrieved.
Take yesterday for example, the kids on the school bus (kudos for the kids who broke up the fight). Reverse the races and Sharpton and Jackson would be screaming hell to high heaven about how racist "whitey" is. True or not true? Is it my fault or the fault of the media that I feel this way? The majority of the kids were black. The majority did NOT cheer, but those closest did. Most of the kids nearer the front and back weren't even aware of what was happening until the second time the kid was punched. One black girl near the front covered her mouth with a look of horror on her face

The majority of the kids were black. The majority did NOT cheer, but those closest did. Most of the kids nearer the front and back weren't even aware of what was happening until the second time the kid was punched. One black girl near the front covered her mouth with a look of horror on her face

I don't see a the fight as national news, other than Fox/Drudge obsession with the racial component. In school districts, that's the way it is.
Yes it is. Some of them take zero tolerance to mindless extremes. In this case though, I think those who tried to stop the fight will probably face no punishment. If they do get suspended, the school district won't like the reaction that draws. This is a situation that calls for careful investigation and justice.

Fox is really spinning the black/white school bus fight this morning. One talking head said "all" the kids cheered (a lie, some tried to help) and she said every student on the bus should be suspended. I guess she intended everyone, black or white, cheering or trying to stop it should be punished. You get the impression from Fox that it was one white kid on a bus full of a black savages, not a mixed race group. BTW, not excusing anyone, but to spin this thing as a major racial incident is just pandering to bigots.

Reminds me of something I mentioned here at LGF a few weeks ago; I heard a story on NPR about a "fight" at a Virginia high school between black and white students. During the course of the piece, you find out that 1) at least one of the black students was on the football team, 2) one of the white students wound up hospitalized with a broken back, and 3) there were two white students involved, and... SIX black students.
I had to wonder; if the races were reversed on those three facts, would NPR still be calling it a "fight"? Sounds more like "racially-motivated beating" to me.

My take too, Beck = hype. Too bad, in his early career he wasn't.
The real issue isn't just that they gave advice on how to engage in illegal enterprises at the flip of a hat (or wave of a pimp stick), but that they're probably providing similarly bad information to homeowners around the country. They hired a bunch of people with a certain moral and ethical flexibility - and didn't bat an eye when faced with these kinds of questions. They happily went along giving all kinds of advice and taxpayers are helping fund this organization.
That is the real scandal here.

Ex-Mayor of Memphis Starts Bid for Congress, Invoking Race in Campaign
By ROBBIE BROWN
MEMPHIS — A Congressional race in Tennessee has become freighted with racial overtones almost a year before the election, with a prominent black politician saying the white incumbent cannot properly represent black voters. The black candidate, former Mayor Willie W. Herenton of Memphis, has argued that Tennessee needs a black voice in its currently all-white delegation. He is running a blistering campaign against Representative Steve Cohen, a fellow Democrat with a precarious hold on the majority black district.
“To know Steve Cohen is to know that he really does not think very much of African-Americans,” Mr. Herenton said in a recent radio interview on KWAM. “He’s played the black community well.”
The primary election in August 2010 pits an unlikely officeholder — a Jew in a deeply Christian region, a middle-age white man known for fighting for blacks and women — against a prominent challenger. Already, the campaign has proved how deeply race still infuses much of politics in the South, even after the election of a black president.
The candidates are battling to represent the Ninth Congressional District, a low-income area that envelops Memphis and is more than 60 percent black. The district was redrawn and renumbered in 1973, increasing the percentage of minority voters, and for three decades it elected the state’s only black members of Congress since Reconstruction, Harold E. Ford Sr. and his son Harold E. Ford Jr.
But in 2006, Mr. Cohen defeated a divided field of black candidates. He coasted to re-election last year against a little-known black corporate lawyer.
The Herenton campaign argues that Mr. Cohen is an anomaly.
“This seat was set aside for people who look like me,” said Mr. Herenton’s campaign manager, Sidney Chism, a black county commissioner. “It wasn’t set aside for a Jew or a Christian. It was set aside so that blacks could have representation...”

He was actually attacking Baucus' plan, which is the smaller of the plans proposed in Congress. The Baucus plan isn't HR3200. HR 3200 has already been savaged by the CBO for underestimating the costs and deficits to be rung up. Baucus' plan hasn't gotten the same scrutiny yet.

I have hiked quite a bit of the Apalachian trail. Very nice. But would love to hike/climb one of those high peaks out west. Skied plently of them.
I bet that is beautiful. I love the scenery and the pay-off at the top.
It's exhilarating. ... and addicting. and hard.
A few folks die every year on mountains that are class 3 and 4. Tragically a guy died on Capital peak earlier this season. The top is a precarious knife edge with nothing but rock and air under your feet.
Needless to say Capital isn't on my to-do list.
I would like to climb all of the Class 1 and 2 (with 3 sprinkled in.) No class 4s for me. My goal is to climb the easiest 14ers in each range. So far, I've hiked three. I'm a bit behind.

McConnell Statement on the Baucus Draft
from the Office of Senator Mitch McConnell
Wednesday, September 16, 2009
‘Only In Washington Would Anyone Think That Makes Sense, Especially In This Economy’
WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell made the following statement Wednesday regarding the Baucus draft:
“This partisan proposal cuts Medicare by nearly a half-trillion dollars, and puts massive new tax burdens on families and small businesses, to create yet another thousand-page, trillion-dollar government program. Only in Washington would anyone think that makes sense, especially in this economy.”

Cohen has been subject to this kind of attack in the past:
Jewish Rep. Cohen Battles Antisemitism and Racism In Re-Election
If you thought race was an uncomfortable issue in the Democratic presidential primary, wait 'til you get a load of what's going on in the Democratic primary in the Memphis area's 9th District of Tennessee, where a shockingly worded flier paints Jewish Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) as a Jesus hater.
"Memphis Congressman Steve Cohen and the JEWS HATE Jesus," blares the flier, which Cohen himself received in the mail -- inducing gasps -- last week.
Circulated by an African-American minister from Murfreesboro Tenn., which isn't even in Cohen's district, the literature encourages other black leaders in Memphis to "see to it that one and ONLY one black Christian faces this opponent of Christ and Christianity in the 2008 election..."

I can, not that I agree. The district he's running to represent is 60% black and he feels the state needs a black to represent that district. I think that decision should be up to the voters, but he can try that pitch if he likes. If not for the racial component, it would be the typical "The other guy does not understand you" comment used when a rich guy runs in a poor district, or a lib runs in a conservative one. That's the best I can do, it was a stupid statement to say out loud.

I agree with the first part of your statement- Cohen would vote no differently than Herenton.
However, I disagree with the second part of your statement: it does matter whether a campaign is racist.
