Dan Riehl’s Imaginary Black Kid Beatdown

Blogosphere • Views: 15,670

Right wing blogger Dan Riehl takes a ride on the DC Metro after the tea party protest, and lapses into a reverie about putting a serious beatdown on some black children: Riehl World View: A 9/12 Experience: Dangerous Times.

Riding out of DC on the Metro, 9/12, there were some folks from South Dakota and also another Mid-West state I can’t recall in the same Metro car. We were talking, nothing special, really - politics, of course.

In the back were maybe ten or so black kids taking up that section of the car. There was no confrontation, just one or two of them talking loudly enough to make sure they’d be heard.

Without resorting to the poor diction it was along the lines of, these are the people who think Obama is the anti-Christ. That McCain he wasn’t chit. Obama’s going to be president as long as he wants, so these people better get used to it, etc. It went on but not really to a level that was so loud, or so confrontational that it needed to be addressed.

We just ignored them without much trouble at all.

Yeah, they were technically thugs. But the reality was they were still wannabes really, pretty young, not that big, or many. And if the several adults there for 9/12 actually needed to do something about it, the kids wouldn’t have lasted very long. Maybe if they were bigger, or more numerous, it might have been worse. Or it may not have happened at all. Who knows?

Now there’s true courage. If those black kids had tried something, Dan Riehl was ready. Man, he would have shown them.

Of course, they didn’t try anything. But the potential for serious violence was in the air! He could tell by their “poor diction.”

Oh no. That’s not racist at all.

Meanwhile, because I posted a comment about this ridiculous Riehl revenge fantasy in the middle of a long thread about something else entirely, he came up with another classic bit of paranoia:

For the first time in over 5 years I had to close a comment thread as the comments were so ugly. They’re deleted now. The post was linked by several lib blogs, so I assumed it was them.

Probably libs, but of the neo-charles johnson variety. Someone just emailed me the link where charles linked it. It’s funny, as they were mostly mimicking his comments now that I’ve read them. Seems his remaining lizards are now bees, just a hive of little drones. Or, maybe they were all him. He certainly doesn’t throw traffic anything like he once did. I saw that coming in but never put it together.

What a sad commentary. lgf, ugliest blog on the Internets. As I told the emailer, “Whatever it is, he’s now riding in circles in a very, very ugly place, somewhere within a state of misery. Not much to do but pity him and otherwise ignore him, I guess”.

Yes, Dan! I mobilized my vast army of flying monkeys to send you hate mail — and cleverly hid my intentions by not posting the instructions!

Or maybe … it was all me!

Because, you know, I have nothing better to do with my time than to compose dozens of authentic-sounding hate mails to the brave, black-kid-beating Dan Riehl, and thousands of comments that look as if they were written by real people. All for you, Dan. That’s just how evil I am.

Dan Riehl’s last contribution to the blogosphere, if I recall, was his foul-mouthed ridiculing of the evidently-murdered Natalee Holloway and his otherworldly speils trashing her family. Blogs which followed the story surmised Riehl was “compensated” by the Aruban government to do so.

He’s a bottom-of-the barrel clown.

Why is his name even mentioned here?

Me, either. Of course, then we’ll all worry about fingernail length or the size of the left big toe.

It sometimes really stinks that we’re tribal critters.

Heh. Moar wish fulfillment, from the fertile mind of Dan Riehl.

That creepy, fertile mind where the crazy is always in bloom, and the neverending bullshit provides the best fertilizer.

One day, while shopping at the local Fry’s Supermarket, a black man approached me and said these words:

“Excuse me, do you have the time?”

I answered, “uh, 3pm”

He said, “thank you”

Deep down though, he was thinking that Obama was the man and I was a powerless Honky that cannot stop him, even if I wanted too…

Luckily, that was the end of the conversation. It could have gotten much worse. For example, he could have said, “Nice weather, hot enough for you?” or “Do you know any good resturants around here” or something just as sinister.

I was glad to get out of Fry’s alive that day…it was quite harrowing.

Right. He blogs about some imaginary encounter involving black kids and turns it into a rant about “living in dangerous” times” replete with race-fear innuendo and we’re the crazy blog.

He describes a group in the back of the train yet and says that there was “no confrontation, just one or two of them talking loudly enough to make sure they’d be heard.” Got that? Just one or two. He conflates this “encounter” based on the loud talking of one, or is that two, individuals. Yet he went so far as to call then “thugs” and created an imaginary scenario in which if they “actually needed to do something about it, the kids wouldn’t have lasted very long.” Oh, but if they were bigger or more numerous it could have been worse. Worse than the loud talking of a couple of kids.

You ride mass transit that’s standard operating procedure. Considering the signs we’ve seen I would say this alleged encounter was rather pleasant. The kids weren’t too far off either, some of them do believe that Obama is “antichrist.”

Dangerous times. Give me a break.

It’s fucking stupid, that’s what it is.

The cutbacks are an enormous setback to thousands of Central Valley farmers, and will likely raise prices on a wide variety of crops. California is the nation’s No. 1 farm state in terms of the value of the crops produced, which stands at more than $36 billion a year.

The Central Valley, a fertile but arid region spanning roughly 500 miles from Bakersfield to Redding, produces over half of the fruit, vegetables and nuts grown in the United States and is California’s agricultural heartland.

The main source of water for the valley’s farms and ranches is the federally built and managed CVP, a large network of dams, pumping stations and canals that collects runoff from the nearby Sierra Nevada mountain range and delivers it to regional irrigation districts.

One recent forecast compiled economists at the University of California projected 60,000 to 80,000 job losses and over $2 billion in lost income from a scenario such as the one announced Friday.

Some famous folk like Gary Sinise and Paul Rodriguez have openly protested against this decision.

Ah Charles I live in a city where gangs are rampant and two teenagers were burred last week in a fight involving guns and Machetes 5 minutes from my house.

DC is known as a tough crime area, maybe 20 or 30 years ago a person has the luxury of assuming that kids are just kids, but today you don’t know if kids are armed or not. If people are talking trash trying to provoke a reaction you can ignore them, but to expect people to not have the possibilities of trouble in the back of their head and what to do about it is unrealistic. Particularly if you are you have a bunch of guys in a strange town.

You live on the west coast where I hear there are gang issues, perhaps you don’t have those worries in your neighborhood and if so I’m glad for you.

Do you remember Way back 8 years ago what you said in this post.

Actually, I may be painting him more of a bigot than he is. My admittedly speculative guess is that he rarely takes public transit, or is in contact with urban teenagers. My guess is that he was scared, and is now blowing this up into a significant racial confrontation rather than examine the fact that he was just afraid of these boys.

Hate posts, not so much.

But I’ve written broken-hearted poems; does that count?

The Lesson

I used to think I couldn’t cry
But thanks to you
I now know that’s not true.
Unlike you
I cannot twist on spigot tears
At the drop of a convenience
But when my tears do fall
They’re deeply felt
And truly meant.

To a Lost Hope

I’m sorry.
I sincerely apologize for
So rudely falling in love with you.
But please believe me when I say
That I didn’t mean it personally.
I’ll still be your friend
I can’t help but be
All you’ll let me be for you
And flash my brittle smile
At the appropriate moments.
You’ll know that it’s fake
And that inside I’m dying.
We know each other far too
Well for successful pretense.
Just please give me points for trying.
I wish you both the very best.
I can’t help wishing you the best
In all you do, say or choose
But (forgive my eyes for crying) I shall
Ever and always believe
That the best for you
Was me.

Sal: But that was long ago; I’m okay now…kinda…

re: #82 Pingemi

That’s a lot of horse pucky.

If you live in a large Metro city (I live in Miami) this kind of thing always exists at any city event. That would be rallies, protests as well as concerts or festivals.

Along the same lines, someone said something in the other thread I think, that if you have enough money, you drive to these events. No one drives to these events! There’s generally no parking. You park your car in a lot or a garage nearby and shuttle in.

So everyone takes mass transit for these events. In fact, you always see “unruly” young people when these things happen. And talking loud and showing off, which is what ALL young people do, is no big deal.

I agree with the upbringing in the story I linked the fact that the kids were at a party at 4:30 a.m. speaks very ill of the parents.

This doesn’t change that given the situation and the kids actions being ready for trouble is not either illegitimate or a sign of racism. They may have been mistaken and the kids didn’t do more than talk but I’ve walked through violent neighborhoods late at night in unfamilar towns were fast food restaurants have armed guards with a teenage son at my side.

I’ll share a nice thug story…
When I first moved to Chicago with my girlfriend we were on the L (train) all proud of ourselves for learning how to get around the city. At one of the stops a really huge thuggish looking guywalks over next to where she was sitting and holds the door until the train start to make that bing bing sound that the train’s ready to leave but something is obstructing the door. He puts his hand on my girlfreind’s shoulder and says, “excuse me, miss”. She looks up at him and he grabs the chain around her neck. The entire train froze. He said, “somebody’s going to grab that chain and run. If your head gets stuck in the door when the train pulls away, they still got your chain. Tuck it in or don’t sit near the door.” He let go and walked away.
Good advice.
P.S. Since we’re talking about race: I’m white, Girlfriend black, “thug” black.

Charles all I am saying is that attributing their feeling to racism is not only a leap but is uncharitable and a game changer.

Consider this sentence:

Riding out of DC on the Metro, 9/12, there were some folks from South Dakota and also another Mid-West state I can’t recall in the same Metro car. We were talking, nothing special, really - politics, of course.

I suspect these people have very little experience in a rough neighborhood and the ability to tell what is a threat and what is not. Maybe they were wrong, or foolish or overreacting. I’m more than willing to stipulate that.

To leap to the conclusion that these people are racist and looking to beat black kids, that’s just not right.

It’s interesting this little talking point keeps popping up. That we Lizards are somehow mindless rubes waiting for marching orders. I think what’s really going on here is jealousy. LGF has one of the most intelligent comment sections of any blog. That LGF would appeal to the intelligent, and we would desire to comment here. It’s not enough to smear Charles, they have to further it by smearing his audience, because if word got out LGF was the place for intelligent debate- people might come look and see for themselves, only to discover it’s true.

Riding By - Does Not Equal - Picketing. I “put” Public Employees (Teachers) on an “Informational” Picket Line in 1980. We dotted our “I’s” and crossed our “T’s” - all participants did it on their Lunch Hour. We got our message across, AND heard the Board might move for an injunction. Ex-Wife and I advised them of what/how we were doing. Got back to the Mayor and we settled soon thereafter.
Picketing draws attention. “Our” Mayor was friendly and powerful. Doubt highly you would have the same reaction from the Mosque.

Today is my birthday (I won’t say my age). But I’m not really a materialistic type, so when my wife asked what I wanted for a gift, I just wanted to go out for a nice meal (which we did).

But what I really want is a world where my two sons (19 and 16) are not judged by their religion, skin color, or political beliefs. I also hope that when they have kids, their taxes are not so high that they can’t give their kids the kind of lives that they have. And I’d really like them to live in a world where they have friends of all ethnicities and races who only care whether they’re a good person or not.

146 dwells38  Thu, Sep 17, 2009 7:03:56pm

What’s kinda funny about this too is this Riehl guy’s description of what the kids said:

“Without resorting to the poor diction it was along the lines of, these are the people who think Obama is the anti-Christ. That McCain he wasn’t chit.”

Pretty astute for hoodlums. They understood that the protesters are mostly not racist but just whacked out thinking Obama’s the anti-christ. I would have expected inner city thugs (albeit wannabes) to be playing it wide and loose and referring to them as racist honkeys.

Maybe that’s what ticked him off the most. That they referred to something I’m pretty sure was actually on a few of those signs and actually is absurd.

Without resorting to the poor diction and strange pauses between his words, it was clear that Kirk expected danger and threats, and kept looking at us. It went on but not really to a level that was so loud, or so confrontational that it needed to be addressed.

This is what the kids said that really terrified Riehl, imo:

“Obama’s going to be president as long as he wants, so these people better get used to it…”

Of course even if he gets re-elected, there’s no way Obama could remain in office beyond Jan. 20th, 2017. But these folks live in mortal dread of a dictatorship-perpetuating coup by those people.

Fear, prejudice and paranoia are incestuous siblings.

Yeah, but if they got threatening, and you really needed to do something about it, the crowd would not have lasted long against your blue pullover, I am sure.

When I feel threatened by many thousands while wearing my pullover I often arm myself with a root beer and cady floss.

“Me and a couple of my friends got on the shuttlecraft to go down to the planet. We were talking, nothing special, really. We were all in matching red shirts.

In the front of the shuttle were maybe three officers, along with Captain Kirk. There was no confrontation, just one or two of them talking loudly enough to make sure they’d be heard. Giving ‘orders’ about the ‘mission’.

Without resorting to the poor diction and strange pauses between his words, it was clear that Kirk expected danger and threats, and kept looking at us. It went on but not really to a level that was so loud, or so confrontational that it needed to be addressed.

We just ignored them without much trouble at all…”

I read those word and I repeat, there is a big difference between looking for trouble and being ready for it if it comes.

Might they have been wrong about the level of threat? Sure, inexperience to a situation will do that. Were the kids having them on a bit? Highly likely.

If instead of black kids they were white or Spanish or adults who were drunk or heavily tattooed I suspect the very same words would have been written.

Once you decide however that someone is a racist and publicly call someone that it changes everything, you are marking someone with a Scarlett letter.

I can’t see doing that on the basis of that blog post and considering the seriousness of the charge I just don’t think it’s right.

Seems to me that the utes were the ones really feeling threatened. They just came back from a rally and saw Obama as Hitler, Obama in white face, sign after sign of blatant racism. It’s their town and they love this guy. Maybe they were trying to “puff up their feathers” as it were in case someone wanted to start with them?

I don’t think that statement you quoted was directed at any one person in particular.

There’s lots of ways to diffuse this kind of situation, but it would take a level headed thinking adult to do so. Seems like Mr. Riehl and his pals were short on that.

Let me get this straight-

Kids on the train saying Obama is going to be President as long as he likes and we better get used to it is a threat, but guys talking guns to political events while holding signs about watering the tree of liberty- they’re just exercising their 2nd Amendment rights.

But I should worry about the kids. Mkay.

No, you shouldn’t.

Not unless you’re threatened by black people, or a black president, or the idea of a president remaining in office for his full term, despite assassination rhetoric, attempts at portraying him as a kenyan usurper, and mutterings about ‘taking our country back’ from people who don’t seem to understand that in a democracy, sometimes the other guy wins.

Probably the signs. And the Revolutionary-Era clothes. And the conversation.

Not sure if you were joking about the signs, but now that you mention it, it is possible these guys brought their signs home with them - which no doubt would be a tip-off. Absent that, Diehl says these kids were in the back of the car, which would be pointless for him to mention if he was in the back as well. I guess the car could have been very quiet and thus the converstaion he was having was overheard. Its also interesting that the metro wasn’t packed, what with the normal Saturday passengers and the protesters. Maybe they hung out in DC until midnight or something and then got on the metro.

What the Doctors Think [Larry Kudlow]

…IBD/TIPP found that 71 percent of physicians believe that government cannot cover 47 million more people without significant rationing of health care. And nearly half of the doctors polled say they would retire early if Congress passes the proposed overhaul.

IBD/TIPP surveyed nearly 1,400 physicians for its series. In written responses, doctors have pointed to lower pay, increased government mandates, and less freedom to practice as reasons for the physician shortage. In particular, Medicare and Medicaid, which essentially are running half of our health-care system, continue to pay below-market reimbursement rates that are putting doctors out of business.

Primary-care physicians are the worst off. The American Academy of Family physicians reports that primary-care doctors need a 30 percent pay raise in order to survive. They’re not going to get it under Obamacare, or Obamacare Lite. In fact, physician payments will move lower should any of the various House and Senate plans pass.

The Massachusetts Medical Society, operating in a state that has implemented a Washington-like universal-overage plan, reports that primary-care doctors are in short supply for a fourth straight year, that the percentage of primary-care practices closed to new patients is the highest ever recorded, and that seven of 18 specialties — dermatology, neurology, urology, vascular surgery, and obstetrics-gynecology, in addition to family and internal medicine — are all in short supply.

On top of all that, enrollment in medical schools is already declining. By some estimates, the nation will have 159,000 fewer doctors than it needs by 2025.

So what exactly are we supposed to do about this doctor shortage? The easy answer is to create incentives for new doctors. And for that matter nurses. And for that matter hospital space. We should expand and grow the entire free-market health-care system, which up until recently was America’s greatest growth industry.

But these government plans will do just the opposite. They will shrink private care and private insurance. They will reduce jobs. And they may well undermine American health and wellness.

Everyone should read the IBD series and consider the health-care debate from the standpoint of the doctors. That’s something that hasn’t been done yet. But it’s darn important.

71% is a substantial number.

How would *you* justify the pictures and the rhetoric coming out of this event, Captain Kirk? Don’t give me excuses about “it’s all been done to Bush”. re: #138 Pingemi

Charles all I am saying is that attributing their feeling to racism is not only a leap but is uncharitable and a game changer.

Consider this sentence:

I suspect these people have very little experience in a rough neighborhood and the ability to tell what is a threat and what is not. Maybe they were wrong, or foolish or overreacting. I’m more than willing to stipulate that.

To leap to the conclusion that these people are racist and looking to beat black kids, that’s just not right.

Sometimes, perception is reality and my perception is that Riehl is a bigoted creep…don’t trust me, read his own words and decide for yourself.

310 That's Glenn Beck to you  Thu, Sep 17, 2009 8:05:52pm

[ out of character ]

If “That’s Glenn Beck to you” has been noticeably absent it is because he is having an existential crisis.

He has been contemplating an over the top flounce full of self pity, but that is pretty much the essence of every one of his posts. That and he doesn’t want to get banned “for real.”

The other problem is that the few flounces I have caught have been hard to compete with in terms of pegging the “self pity” and being “over the top.” Sad that they were all intended to be taken seriously.

So I am waiting patiently to register an R S McCain persona - “That’s RINO Smiter to you”. But with the backlog of bonafide flouncers, it may be a while before I catch a registration opportunity. But RINO Smiter has many a tale to tell about smiting the dastardly Yankee RINOs! He will simply have to prepare in abeyance while sipping on Mint Juleps.

Umm…no. I think his point is valid. Think of the Obama witch doctor poster with a bone in his nose. Hard to reconcile that with reasonable political discourse. How would *you* justify the pictures and the rhetoric coming out of this event, Captain Kirk? Don’t give me excuses about “it’s all been done to Bush”. Justify these specific actions and tell me it’s OK.

Carter’s exact words are “I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man.” (Emphasis mine.) Are you claiming that those teabag morons represent the overwhelming majority of people who oppose Obama, and that therefore, by extension, there are no valid reasons to oppose Obama apart from racism (another talking point of the Left)?

I denied nothing. I justified nothing. You understood nothing.

Try riding the train with a large percentage of black youths in the South Bronx looking as white as me and carrying some Obama protest shirt or sign. You’ll definitely hear some shit being spouted off. Can’t say his story is not true because I wasn’t there but I doubt that his story is some fantasy.

Born and raised in the S. Bronx. Had to take a public bus to school every day when I was in HS. Racial stuff happens especially with a rowdy group of youths. Though I’m a white looking hispanic, I grew up in largely black and hispanic population and experienced it a couple times. This was in 70’s. It happens.

The primary intent of Dan Riehl’s blog is to blame Obama using the “post racial America” as a mile post. At the same time he gets to vocalize his already internalized fear of young black males.

He and the others (Limbaugh, Malkin, et al) are now trying to blame a perceived deconstruction of racial harmony using the school bus beating in the St. Louis area as an indicator. A weak and completely irrelevant example. They’re trying to create a climate that does not exist and if anyone is trying to stir things up it’s them.

Blogging by nature encourages harsh words on occasion and sarcasm due to the rapid nature of the medium. And PUN-ishment can be fun and even healthy sometimes.

But once a charge of racism is made it’s different as it can make the difference in a person’s personal life. Such a direction need to be gone to soberly.

You’ve been blogging for a lot longer than me and have taken a lot more arrows over the years, hell I’ve thrown a few lately, but there are lines that are not healthy to cross, once they then things can go in an unfortunate direction. Life is too short for that.

To be fair I can’t decide if your honor has been impugned to the point where such a response is required. Only you can. I’ll just say there are times when men just have to be able to quietly settle things among themselves for the sake of everyone involved if it’s at all possible.

Discomfort—sure. Although it is not at all clear to me that they were addressing him directly. I can imagine being uneasy in that situation, also a little scared.

What I am contemptuous of is that he then engages in a fantasy that he is in real danger, but of course, could kick these kids’ asses, and then expands THAT into an idea that these are ‘dangerous times’, and racial tensions may sprout under Obama.

And I find it disturbing, in light of that, that he apparently has no insight at all into how it might feel to young black men to see the signs on their streets that I’ve been seeing in pictures for the past few days. ‘Racial tensions’ are all about other people.

God should forbid I ever say a good word about Jimmy the Israel Hater Carter, but I also think Obama is completely unable to say that there might be even a little racism directed toward him. He says that, he loses bigtime. So while I think his denial is partly personal opinion, I suspect it’s also partly politics.

“Nobody thinks that Bush and McCain have a real answer to the challenges we face. So what they’re going to try to do is make you scared of me,” Obama said. “You know, ‘he’s not patriotic enough, he’s got a funny name,’ you know, ‘he doesn’t look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills.”

I ask because the first I heard of any of this was this post, and I never saw the deleted comments, I want to be sure we are on the same page.

By the way, folks - the Whedonian “Reavers” trace their name back to the actual Scots border bandits of that ilk. They were - how to put it - out of control.

Unlike a bunch of scaree black kidz on a train.

Riehl has either never been to a big American city before or else he’s a Depends-pissing racist.

Yeah, Dan got on the train and the first thing he asked one of the kids was, “can I touch your hair?”

Actually, that probably would have been a better move.

One other thing to point out about the Reihl “confrontation” that wasn’t - I’ve ridden on the DC Metro countless times. It is rare that people just carry on loud political chatter, unless -

1) It is on a protest weekend
2) The people are from out of town.

From the description of what the “technically thugs” said, they may have simply been telling some obnoxious out of towners where to get off by simply saying something loud among themselves intended for the obnoxious out of towners to hear.

Not the same as approaching and saying “Dear sir, may I please ask that you and your colleagues keep your discussion more intimate seeing as not all passengers on this train are apt to share your point of view nor wish to engage it?” But these days it is about as polite.

Yes! That’s the point. If he agrees that there are certain crazies who oppose his policies simply because they cannot accept the fact that we have a black (or mixed-race, or whatever) President, he loses clarity on the primary issue of public policy. It gets sidetracked into the whole nasty, emotional, race thingy.

It is imperative for this Admin to keep the focus on the policy, not the emotion of the whackos. Which is why the whackos are going push push push.

Charles, can you tell us how to do Cyrillic on LGF? I get probs with it too. Is it some kinda weird unicode thang?

Even Sanskrit works here senza problema.

There’s a filter that breaks long strings of characters by inserting spaces, in order to prevent a long string from rogering a thread in some silly browsers like IE.

To avoid this, just put some spaces in your long strings of Unicode entities. Eventually I’ll get around to changing that code so it’s more Unicode-friendly, but it’s not exactly a high priority at the moment.

re: #394 Sharmuta

Ok I’ll answer as best as I can:

Assuming you are referring to the deleted comments, I haven’t read them so I can’t make a fair judgment.

Assuming you are referring to these words:

I’d have to say they were pretty tame compared to a charge of Racism. The stuff above seems to be blog trash talk not a huge deal, at least I don’t think it is but again I don’t know the details of what was said before in comments that led to this so you might have a better perspective than me if you know what was said.

A charge of Racism changes perspectives and changes public perspectives. If I’m interviewing for a job I wouldn’t want to be googled and have my name associated with the word “racism”.

Blogging is a fun hobby, you meet interesting people, read interesting opinions and get to vent a bit, but it isn’t relevant compared to real life!

If you are going to do something that can affect someone’s real life it should be done soberly. You talk man to man, privately when possible. As this is an electronic medium e-mail is the logical method for such a talk or even a private chat room would do.

Ironically I see very little difference between overplaying the reaction to the quoted words above and the potential overreaction of the riders of the train. It’s not a racial thing, it’s just an interpretation of a situation.

And being a longtime GOPer who has voted straight ticket Republican in every race since 1984 I want to say thanks for taking the lead calling out the kooks on the right. They see this as their moment to take over the GOP after spending decades in the shadows reading The Spotlight and spreading the conspiracies and bitching about every Republican President but voting for them anyway when it mattered but always wishing they could grab the nomination someday.

And Ron Paul is their guy for the (who else wants it) race for the GOP nomination to oppose Obama in 2012. And the last thing they need is an intelligent rational person to call out their BS. So get ready for the onslaught. I plan to hang around and support.

For those who are interested in the movie “White Dog”, you can read about it here:

[Link: www.imdb.com…]

synopsis:

Up and coming Hollywood starlet Julie Sawyer (Kristy McNichol) takes in a stray German Shepherd after accidentally hitting it with her car. Though the animal seems friendly and protective at first, it soon reveals a startling aspect of its nature: it will brutally kill any dark-skinned person it sees. Facing the possibility that her pet might be euthanized for the safety of the public, Julie takes the dog to Noah’s Ark, a facility that specializes in training animals for movies. She begs the facility operator Mr. Carruthers (Burl Ives) to break her dog of it’s racist attack training, but he insists it is not possible. However, his top trainer, Keys (Paul Winfield) believes he can break the dog and takes on the task as a personal challenge. But Keys himself is African-American, meaning every training session is literally a life and death struggle.

The dog resists the training at first, and even escapes the facility to continue it’s attack spree, culminating in the brutal murder of a black man in a church. This tragedy gives Keys new resolve and through harder, almost obsessive work, he finally gets the dog to stop senselessly attacking blacks, but soon discovers that the training has had an unexpected side-effect: the dog now hates white people instead. As the dog mauls Mr. Carruthers, Keys finally accepts that the animal’s hatred cannot be defeated, only redirected to a new target, and puts the dog down with a bullet to the head. The dog breathes its last as Keys and Julie rush Carruthers away for medical help.

Have you ever seen the movie “White Dog”? It’s about a girl (Kristy MacNichol) trying to salvage a large white-furred dog whose white racist owner paid a black skid row bum to beat when it was a puppy, so it would grow up to hate all black people.

It’s a movie that will break your heart.

Rush seemed like he was about to turn into “Jeff Christie” today with his comment about whether the U.S. can afford a black President if the news media is going to not vet his radical views or associations during the campaign, and gives him a free pass once he’s elected, just because they want to see him succeed.

It was quite similar to the comments Rush made concerning quarterback Donovan McNabb that got him axed from Monday Night Football.

It would be a real rarity here, and I can assure you that I would be quite uncomfortable. I bought a cheap pair of headphones from a bodega (or dollar store)

Just as a pedantic point, SB doesn’t mean that a “bodega” is another word for “dollar store,” but simply that either venue is likely to have ultra-cheap headphones for sale.

I didn’t know what a “bodega” was until moving to NYC in the mid-’90s — in NYC, at least, the word is another word for “mom-and-pop corner grocery”, or you can also think of it as a “mom-and-pop 7-11.” (The “mom-and-pop” part is always implied.) And its a cognate of apothecary, presumably via an ancient Iberian with a head cold: “potheca” —> “bodega.”

A few weeks ago I think that Charles posted the following:

Loyalty to petrified opinion never yet broke a chain, or freed a human soul.
— Mark Twain

I just wanted to say how much I appreciate LGF, and Charles’ ability to be guided by his internal moral compass… not dogma or doctrine.

I’ve been a fellow Lizardoid traveler for several years. And someone who before 2001 found it hard to open my mind to ideas that were not left of center. Charles did a good job of feeding me with information that allowed me to break ideological chains, when the facts dictated that it was right to do so. He helped me to restructure my thinking into that most unloved of all political creatures: an open-minded moderate with some strong personal opinions.

However, being a naturally cynical type, I always had a shadow of a doubt… wondering whether Charles might really have been nothing more than just a very clever Republican operative.

Well, these past few months have shown me that Charles is truly a free thinker, an honest man and a Monkey Mind:
[Link: en.wikipedia.org…]

Monkey Minds get frustrated at their friends’ inability move quickly through the jungle of reality. More rigid minds won’t quit following a particular road (even after that road has veered off into wrong territory) or they keep going in a single unchanging direction (even when the thing they claim to be seeking has headed off in a different direction).

Keep following that “narrow way” as you see it unfold before you. Thanks for being there, man!

The only one of these who is electable in my opinion is Romney. And past history shows the GOP doesn’t at a minimum, pick horrible candidates: McCain, Bush II, Dole, Bush I - unlike the Dems with Dukakis, Mondale, Carter. Whether Ron Paul, Sarah Palin, the tea parties, ODS, etc…, have changed this, we shall see.

We shall see indeed. Hopefully there is someone out there who can step up to the plate and save the GOP from the Bircher mutiny and subsequent sinking of the ship. The USA needs 2 functional parties. The race for the GOP nomination in 2012 might be more important than the general election.

Segregated busing? That will help with racial harmony.

In Toronto, where on rare occasions I ride the subway at night, I have never been addressed by a group of guys. It would be a real rarity here, and I can assure you that I would be quite uncomfortable. It is considered very bad form in Toronto for strangers to speak on a subway train - people generally don’t even look at eachother.
Sad in a way, but true.

It’s not common in DC, either.

And even when it happens, mostly what I meant was talking, not TO me, but in a way I am clearly intended to hear.

SB doesn’t mean that a “bodega” is another word for “dollar store,”
[…] in NYC, at least, the word is another word for “mom-and-pop corner grocery”

Bleech. I was out this evening with a few friends who had come into town early for the 20-year HS reunion; obviously my inner editor had one beer too many.

One of our old classmates is now a teacher at the school, and led a guided tour of the building this evening. Kinda mind-blowing to go inside — not because it was a nostalgia trip, but purely for architectural reasons. The school was built in the ’70s during the fad of “open classrooms,” meaning an absolute minimum of interior walls — just lots and lots of fabric-covered partitions that anyone more than 5’6” tall can easily peer over, like in many workplaces. It was still that way in the late ’80s, but just a few years ago they did massive interior renovations, so it’s all enclosed classrooms now, and that was the mind-blowing part.

(For any Lizards who might happen to be familiar with the Northern Virginia area and/or Fairfax County schools, I’m talking about Lake Braddock, in Burke.)

I’m not saying he does not have insight. I’m saying that he is lying. He is doing so for two reasons:

1. To punish Bristol Palin for declaring him immature.

2. To court the attention of the media. The Elite Media hates Sarah Palin and has proven to be quite willing to pay someone able to slime her, truthfully or not.

The guy has ulterior motives, Cato. And I won’t call him a man since his anti-Palin tour proves to me that Bristol Palin was right about him. He’s yet to really grow up.

The hate vibes he got off the men on the street were so strong, he had his tail between his legs for the first time ever since he’s been with me. True story.

I finally had to take him back to the tour bus and ask the Arab driver to put on the A/C and watch out for him till I got back from the tour. Which he did.

re: #568 J.D.

My neighbors’ families are receiving British health care.
They are not fans.

Oh, and neither are my Canadian neighbors fans of their system.

First, the Stephen Hawking quote was from Hawking himself:

“I wouldn’t be here today if it were not for the NHS. I have received a large amount of high-quality treatment without which I would not have survived.

Second, I lived in Canada three times for a total of twenty years (I married one, who has ulcerative colitis). I have my beefs with the system up there, but in the end the worst care in Canada is just a bit less than the best care in the US., and the best care in Canada is as good as the best here. The range is very small, while here it is enormous (the worst care in the US is, well, between truly awful and completely unavailable). Last time I lived there my 93 year old neighbor was offered knee replacements by his doctor (he turned them down and lived to 99).

We could avoid some of the problems of Canadian healthcare (with luck and effort) and have all the benefits (including spending way less) and I would love to debate how we do that. But this whole “old people are left to die in those countries” BS is ridiculous. Let’s argue about the real issues (like avoiding Single-Tier, or making sure we don’t demotivate research) and save the tinfoil-hat arguments for the the lunatics.

So, y’know, that tells us something about IBD’s commitment to an objective consideration of the policy.

586 Mad Prophet Ludwig  Fri, Sep 18, 2009 12:50:54am

So I am late to this party, but I have to say that the backlash of the radicals is always marvelously appalling and pathetic to see.

We have, as the topic of this thread, a paranoid and racist fantasy.

I’ve been arguing for some time, that the root of the crazy infesting the right wing is nothing more or less than the fear of “loosing” America as a lilly white and Christian confection.

Isn’t it utterly clear that if you are so threatened just by seeing black folks that you have to think the way this asshole does, you are living in a state of racial fear?

Isn’t it utterly clear that a rhetoric of a non-white, non-Christian man coming to take your guns and your freedoms and kill your granny - is nothing more than what the mind that is terrified of loosing lily white America has fever dreams about?

Isn’t it utterly clear that we are looking at nothing more than the fears the create racism, and that once those fears of the other are stoked, only racism can follow?

How much more evidence is needed?

Of course, it is not clear to many on the right, because they can not admit the fears that drive this. They do not consider themselves racist, and indeed many are not. However, they are afraid, and as those fears are stoked and twinged, eventually the seeds are sown.

There is much apologetics for the stuff… It is after all “concern for America” in the minds of many… but again those concerns revolve around loosing America to the other. From there, the panic turns to anger and then hatred.

Fear of the other is racism.

It leads to nothing good. Just feelings of anger, frustration and false oppression. The evil liberal media is painting us badly! No NO NO he isn’t racist at all, the bone though the nose in that picture really meant… Why can’t I criticize without being called racist?

Well you can criticize without being a racist - provided that you are criticizing a policy on the basis of fact and not making up horror stories about a black man on the basis of fear.

587 Pingemi  Fri, Sep 18, 2009 6:01:38am

I’m only just now noticing that Charles’ link were to Cache pages with the comments. No wonder Charles was wondering why I hadn’t read the comments, when I saw the post saying they were deleted I assumed they weren’t there. (Late night for me) I read them this morning. My reaction to them follow:

The first thing that jumped out was the “Blacks can’t be racist” nonsense. Racism isn’t a white trait it’s a human trait.

The second was the Romney point, it wasn’t a very good one, quite a few people on the right would not support him because they think Mormonism is a cult. So the point about the “left’ was in my opinion incomplete. (Romney was an ineffective governor with no real convictions that’s why he would make a great cabinet sec but a poor leader but that’s a post for my own blog)

Jimmy’s comment was objectively racist, his explanation gives a reason for it but I say it is an excuse. A person has to grow up. It also reminded me of an odd quote from of all things the Bill James Baseball Abstract from the 1980’s. He quotes first pitcher Kirby Higbe saying his arm was strong from throwing rocks at black kids when he was a kid, He follows it with the immortal Satchel Paige saying his arm was strong from throwing rocks at white kids when he was a kid.

I don’t think it was at the point where the comments needed to be deleted but I can see why the thread was closed to make sure it didn’t get there.
I wouldn’t have deleted the comments, I think that is bad form, but it’s his blog and his call.

I didn’t see a comment by Charles in the thread. He calls the liberals of the “neo Charles Johnson variety” He must have gotten the e-mail he immediately referred to as he was typing the post. (I’ve had that happen) and then shifted to his comment about LGF and it’s readers. Not having seen the e-mail in question I don’t know what link it he had.

Ok my thoughts with my homework completed and at partial nights sleep (I’ve gotta start getting more than 4 hours):

I didn’t see the comment Charles left in whatever thread it was in, if anyone has a link to it I’d be interested in reading it to judge the reactions accordingly.

I’m looking at what Dan said in the post. It is blog trash talk but it doesn’t go near the level of calling someone a racist. If I google someone and see a name or blog associated with the word “ugly blog” that is unlikely to do anything in the real world. If you are associated with the word “racist” however that marks you and can ruin you.

Perhaps because the word is used so recklessly these day that some might consider it not as big a deal. I disagree. The real world isn’t in the comment threads or even main posts of blogs. There are flame wars and there are lines, and I think the racist card is a line that needs a whole lot more before it is crossed.

FYI: I have to take my son somewhere as his car is in the shop so I wont be answering any reactions for at least 45 minutes.

Speaking from personal experience, there are certain times of the day in D.C. (particularly when the public schools let out) when the Metro fills up with packs of obnoxious youths. Some are nice, others are right from Lord of the Flies. I usually avoid those cars/trains not so much because it’s threatening so much as all the shouting, grab-assing, loud music, and herd dominance dynamics are really exhausting to deal with, particularly if you’re going more than a few stops. 9/12 was a Saturday, though, so I’m not sure what he was talking about.

Here’s a tip on how to avoid that: don’t post racist fantasies on the web about beating up black children.

596 jackfetch  Fri, Sep 18, 2009 10:15:24am

I might be bucking the trend here, these days, but aside from being a pointless little “I coulda taken ‘em” fantasy, I don’t really see the rampant racism here. I’ve been around people purposely voicing comments designed to antagonize before… and yeah… it usually works, whether you do something about it or not. Is it the fact that these kids were black making it racist? They saw a bunch of people they don’t agree with, and made sure that group could hear their mockery and disdain. Does feeling the sting of mockery make you racist?

I’m tired of “racism” being tossed around on a daily basis. Is anyone in this scenario asserting the inherent superiority of their race over another? Well, I suppose if you rolled time back to the 50s and turned the kids to white and the blogger to black you’d call them racist… but the converse seems a bit of a stretch.

597 drcordell  Fri, Sep 18, 2009 10:43:31am

re: #596 jackfetch

Is it the fact that these kids were black making it racist?

The fact that Riehl calls them “thugs” despite the fact they were not even talking “to a level that was so loud, or so confrontational that it needed to be addressed.” The guy is a joke.

The DC Metro might as well be the monorail at Disneyland compared to just about any major US city’s pubic transit system. Riehl would probably shit himself with fear on the NYC 4 train two stops into Brooklyn during rush hour. I can only imagine what stain he’d leave on his chair if he had to ride the JMZ at 2 a.m.
