Creationists Win Another One in Louisiana

Science • Views: 4,648

Louisiana Governor (and part time exorcist) Bobby Jindal’s stealth creationist bill is starting to bear rancid fruit, as the state’s top school board approves new rules intended to make it difficult for residents to challenge the teaching of creationism in science classes.

Pseudo-science promoted by ignorant religious fanatics takes another big step forward in Louisiana.

Gene Mills, president of the Louisiana Family Forum Action, praised the rules and said Bayard’s plan was better than the department’s recommendation.

“Arguably this is the closest thing that would mimic due process,” Mills said in a telephone interview after the meeting. “That seems equitable to me.”

The Louisiana Family Forum, a key backer of the law, says it promotes traditional values.

If they want to challenge science- they need to do it with more science. Since they don't have any science to challenge science, they resort to trickery. In the long run, kids lose out on their education and America loses a science educated public. The consequences of this could be very troubling.

So in Louisiana it'll be atheists home-schooling their kids. Weird.

8 Charles Johnson  Thu, Sep 17, 2009 9:53:04pm

This is why I will never support Bobby Jindal for anything. He's in the pocket of these people, and he's sacrificing the education of the children of Louisiana on their altar.

There seem to be different kinds of Christians of course but the dividing line between Christians who believe their religion is there to help them in their life and Christians who believe their religion directs their life is striking. It seems for the second group you believe without question, it's considered good morality.

One says that materials used in science classrooms “shall not promote any religious doctrine, promote discrimination for or against a particular set of religious beliefs or promote discrimination for or against religion or non-religion.”

Trouble is, any materials that explain evolution necessarily contradict some particular sets of religious beliefs. The teacher who confidently stands by the validity of evolution will be in violation of this rule, while the teacher who grudgingly presents the Darwinian position but then turns around and maintains that it's dubious science and there is another way to look at it, equally respected in scientific circles, well, that teacher has been fair, neither discriminating against or for any religious doctrine.

Exactly! If they were holding any cards, they would not need this. I would love to see a provision that would not allow any factually inaccurate information to be given to children under the guise of education. And that includes history. In fact, that would be an excellent general restriction.

23 jaunte  Thu, Sep 17, 2009 10:02:49pm

Here's a good background piece (starring some familiar names) on this topic from last year by Barbara Forrest:

On May 21, 2008, Casey Luskin, former student ID follower and now DI employee, accompanied Virginia creationist and ID supporter, Dr. Caroline Crocker, to Baton Rouge, where Crocker testified in favor of SB 733 before the House Education Committee. The LFF-DI partnership was now out in the open. (See the LA Coalition for Science's June 22, 2008, press release [pdf] or more such evidence of DI's involvement in the Louisiana legislation.)

This cozy relationship uniting the Discovery Institute, the LA Family Forum, and the self-servingly obeisant LA legislature threatens to drag Louisiana back to 1981, when earlier legislators pushed the state into the annals of creationist history by passing the "Balanced Treatment for Creation-Science and Evolution-Science in Public School Instruction Act," which the Supreme Court struck down in 1987. Louisiana has come a long way since then. Despite the state's image as a political and educational backwater, there are good, decent, intelligent people here who contribute each day to improving the quality of life and who deserve -- and should command -- the legislature's and the governor's respect. But they are out-numbered and certainly out-organized. They are busy working while the LFF is politicking at the Capitol and the Discovery Institute is scheming from Seattle.[Link: www.talk2action.org...]

24 Charles Johnson  Thu, Sep 17, 2009 10:03:59pm

These people are learning how to sneak around and do these things mostly in secret, so that people like Barbara Forrest and the NCSE don't find out what they're planning until it's too late.

I wouldn't, ACORN is even worse. But that's not saying much because this stuff is the pits. I hate the anti-intellectualism of the creationists, and I know that evolution is the canary in the mine. It would be the first thing they get rid of, but not the last. I don't intend to let either ACORN or the creationists eat my freedom.

26 Sharmuta  Thu, Sep 17, 2009 10:04:08pm

I'm reading a book on Gould at the moment, and it's interesting he pointed out Darwin's interest in Adam Smith as helping him to formulate the theory of evolution. A capitalist helped Darwinism come to light, and yet the people who supposedly believe in capitalism don't see the similarity to evolution. Madness.

3:25 – The curriculum writer for second grade notes that her team never considered dropping Thurgood Marshall from the standards and were, in fact, proud to be able to teach about him. This helps correct the misconception promoted by some board members that objections to Thurgood Marshall came from the writing teams. In fact, those objections came from the so-called “experts” — David Barton and Peter Marshall — appointed by board members themselves.

Now why would David Barton object to Thurgood Marshal?

Texas Governor Rick Perry is another fan of paleo-right kook Cleon Skousen:

[Link: www.rickperry.org...]

Naturally, the governor is concerned about what is happening in Washington. When I ask him if Mr. Obama's policies would send this country down the same path as California, Mr. Perry lunges forward, "If you want to know what this guy's policies are doing, it's been written about before."

"Read that book. Read this book," he says, gesturing toward the nearby table. I see something from Weight Watchers and a Harry Potter paperback—but the governor is referring to the "The Road to Serfdom" by Frederick Hayek and "The 5000 Year Leap" by W. Cleon Skousen.

45 Sharmuta  Thu, Sep 17, 2009 10:19:24pm

And again- the problem with Texas injecting revisionist history into their education standards is they influence the rest of the text book market. That means kids across America will get revisionist claptrap in their history books- not just Texas.

46 cliffster  Thu, Sep 17, 2009 10:19:51pm

Again I wonder, why would any Christian want their religion taught by a teacher in school? What if the teacher is an atheist? What if they are a Jew? Or whatever. It's even worse than that, Sharm. While claiming to fight the far left, the Fundie Right has come to favor the same tactics of indoctrination and suppression that the left prefers. They have turned their backs on the Founders' vision entirely, and their efforts to rewrite the Texas social studies curriculum reminds me of The Party's "definitive texts" in George Orwell's 1984 . I had though that particular nightmare defeated, but it seems to be reemerging in new forms.

Carter was wrong, austin. Most of the people on LGF oppose Obama and they do not do so out of racism. The racists remain a distinct minority, but they are a vocal one and they taint any who associate with them.

I don't disagree, but there is a core of racist hate that has colored every debate since the inauguration. It's vile.

Black conservatives are nonexistent at this point. I can't imagine there are any left.

I caught Stephen A. Smith on Mark Levin today. Worth a listen.

Click on audio rewind for 9-17.
Fast forward to 18:15.

He voted for Obama, and is now extremely disappointed. I wouldn't call Stephen a conservative, but he's pretty close.

Really good interview.

Review of Richard Dawkins new book "The Greatest Show on Earth" bu PZ Myers - Pharyngula

There are no more excuses. None.

The defining characteristic of all arguments with creationists is how damned ignorant they are. I'm sure many scientists have been stupefied into stunned silence when they first encounter these people; these advocated of creationism are typically loud and certain and have invested much time and effort into apologetics, but when you sit down and try to have a serious discussion with them, you quickly discover that their knowledge of basic biology is nonexistent. It's worse than that. We're used to freshmen entering our classes who don't know much about the basics, and we can deal with that; these, though, are people with negative knowledge, whose brains are so packed with raging falsehoods that we have to struggle to overcome an unfamiliar hurdle.

Again I wonder, why would any Christian want their religion taught by a teacher in school? What if the teacher is an atheist? What if they are a Jew? Or whatever. They'll carefully choose a church to make sure the preacher and Sunday school have the right tone, but let just any 'ol teacher teach them the other 6 days.

Put Jindal in the Oval Office with strong Congressional majorities & five Harriet Miers thinkalikes on SCOTUS, and your questions will be answered.

BTW, I did a google search on "Michelle Obama" +wookie , and there are several hits from this week, from, shall we say, disreputable places.

That there are people on HA doing the same now.

Some of the links are so new there is not a cached version yet, so I won't link to them. For example, from the current FR thread on Michelle:

Can you imagine any company or business paying this “wookie linebacker”, the product of affirmative action this kind of money?

I see they're going for the "Let the wookie win" strategy. It's brilliant. Republicans won't pull your arms out of their sockets if they lose. Wookies are known to do that.

And so forth.

HA is now attracting posters that appear to be bleeding over from the uglier side of the internet.

I tell this quick story, it's something you would enjoy. Wed. my girlfriend and I took about 8 hours for ourselves, away from her family and the funeral stuff, and rode into NYC from the Hamptons.

We didn't have a lot of expendable extra cash, this funeral was not expected to start with, and last minute plane fares and stuff was a bit pricier than if we had planned far ahead. So we went to the half price ticket booth, decided on "Phantom," 2 o'clock matinee. I've seen the road show at least 5 times, she saw it in NYC a few years ago.

Show over, curtain call, the actor playing the Phantom announces that this is the 9000th performance, the show is 21 years old, currently the longest running show on Broadway and then brings out a large birthday cake, then the original director Hal Prince, then the original choreographer Gillian Lynne and then the composer himself Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber.

A last minute decision to see the show, half priced tickets and we witness theatre history, along with 3 of the most famos theater people in the world.

Not a bad afternoon.

It was an attempt to mock the absolute lack of reasonable moderation at that site, and the kind of stupid, racist euphemisms that they allow to stand as representative of their community.

Granted, not the best way to do so. I fear this will backfire.

Concur. Rodan will use it as ammo, I'm sure of it.

They're sleeping and they don't have 24 hour moderation.

I do recognize that I started this experiment late and that's a little unfair. However, Michelle Obama is frequently referred to as a wookie. This has gone on for months at all times of day. They don't care.

I'd rather fund acorn than this junk.

Trouble is, then you'd be funding fraudulent voting. The integrity of elections is as important as the integrity of science education.

No- they let this stuff go daily. I don't think they care if their comment section is a cesspit.

OK, we'll see in the morning.

re: #163 Dark_Falcon

Yup.

I have far from kept track of this whole "story," since I've been out of town and only dropped in on LGF a few times this week, but if I gather what I think is happening here, then I don't see any problem with what Killgore has done, and a really big problem of what the other blog didn't do and the reaction KT is getting from the other posters there.

Interesting.

171 Killgore Trout  Thu, Sep 17, 2009 11:20:50pm

re: #164 freetoken

You could always link to the various blogs around the net that are racist and have "wookie" threads running. That's what I would have done if they allowed me to comment over there.

I pointed that out earlier today on Hot Air. Mostly from freeRepublic, RedStaet and AR15.

Right. They're obsessed. Frankly I find Michelle Obama to be rather low key. I'm also tired about hearing about what she's wearing. Especially from the "men folk."

re: #18 Sharmuta

I consider them at least equally reprehensible. With ACORN the people on the videos were willing to help someone set up a business to take underage girls and basically rape them for money. Which nauseates me.

Creationists suck. True.

I assume you are assuming most people who work for ACORN wouldn't do that.

Let's hope so.

They were intended to be the most offensive things I could think of. That was the whole point.

I dig the point you are making about their lack of moderation regarding the not so clever racist code words used there, but I think you could have made that point without using the language you did.

Those posts will most certainly be deleted by morning, east coast time, and I' sure your account will be blocked.

I fear you just lobbed them a softball.

Killgore posted at Hot Air. But Rodan has caught on to it, as some feared he would.

OK, we'll see in the morning.

I'm sure KT's stuff will get deleted. I doubt they really want to tackle the issue KT was trying to point out, however. They're not interested in being hard asses with a decent comment section- they would get called names like "neo-Charles Johnsons" were they to actually moderate their blog.

178 Killgore Trout  Thu, Sep 17, 2009 11:24:51pm

I'm ignorant, you're ignorant, Jindal is ignorant. Ignorance is simply a state of not knowing something. We are all ignorant, in many subject and fields. Ignorance is curable by a proper application of knowledge.

Foolish is a different matter. It seems foolish can't be cured. Foolish is believing that you can cure cancer with an exorcism. Jindal is both ignorant and foolish.

The article in question does read like a Hot Air Cosmopolitan magazine piece:

New secret weapon in selling ObamaCare: Michelle Obama

Why not? The One’s out of ammo and the Democrats’ hyper-negative racial campaigning has failed epically. Might as well hand the ball off to Mrs. O and see if she can “mom” America into supporting this craptastic boondoggle. Imagine the media coverage. Three tips to raising a healthy child: Plenty of exercise, lots of vegetables, and blowing a trillion dollars on a universal health care plan that’ll still be bleeding red ink when the Obama girls are grandmothers.

The bad news: This means lots, lots more stories on how to get toned arms. The good news: There’s a fair chance of a “I won’t be proud of my country unless we pass ObamaCare” moment, which means rich, tasty right-wing blog content for weeks on end.

AP's comments regarding Michelle are rather inaccurate because she does have two rather healthy and intelligent children. It's almost like he feeds the rage then pulls back on a note of caution. He's changed his tone over the past few months. He used to post more articles regarding atheism and criticizing Sarah Palin.

Toned arms? Bleh. Boring old Michelle Derangement Syndrome.

Although that one's a little scary as I think I'm on the hook for some of that!

And to think last year before the election, I was screeching to friends and family the Fundies were as big a threat as they believed socialism was/is. "Nah, it'll never happen," they said. "But that commie Obama has to be stopped!"

What a difference a year makes. Now we're outing ACORN, Glenn Beck is a god on the boobtube, the teaparties have gone off the freakin' rails, and the Fundies are successfully pushing their psychobabble bullshit through America's school systems with help and backing from the GOP itself. Who'da thunk it?

"Nah, it'll never happen. But that commie Obama has to be stopped!"

If douchebaggery was a crime, Jindal and his ilk would be serving life in prison.

Careful - that approach plays right into their hands. Evolution versus creationism is a single battle in a much larger war to turn the nation's public school systems into a network of fundamentalist Christian madrassas, and opening the door to yet more religious indoctrination only works toward achieving that end. Part of their plan depends on the Tyranny of the Majority working it's magic to ensure that only their particular brand of idiocy gets taught in the vast majority of public schools; if there are a few exceptions in a handful of schools in New Jersey and Michigan, they're more than willing to accept that in exchange for getting the door opened in the first place.

These are evil people, no different than the Taliban in their goals. Only their tactics differ.

Dale Bayard, of Sulphur, chairman of the committee that tackled the issue, changed that and the committee went along.

Wow. It's been a while, but I know Dale and never would've pegged him as an "ignorant religious fanatic."

So in Louisiana it'll be atheists home-schooling their kids. Weird.

Not just atheists, but any rational parent.

I wonder who is on this 3 or 5 member board that will review the complaints. More evidence of what Dawkins described as an "educational disgrace" in his promotional video for his new book.

If anybody in LGF is interested in reading a not too long but interesting book on evolution, I can recommend Evolution for Dummies. It's well thought out and generally easy to read. In order to make it possible to jump into any chapter, there's a lot of repetition which works well for me.

re: #46 cliffster

Again I wonder, why would any Christian want their religion taught by a teacher in school? What if the teacher is an atheist? What if they are a Jew? Or whatever. They'll carefully choose a church to make sure the preacher and Sunday school have the right tone, but let just any 'ol teacher teach them the other 6 days.

Come on... You don't get it? It's the first step. Next step is no Jews or Atheists teaching. It's for the children, you know...

201 SFGoth  Fri, Sep 18, 2009 8:07:39am

Traditional values, like cheating and beating on your wife, being a closet homosexual, driving drunk, lying to everyone about your life, leaving your dying wife before she's room temperature, yeah, glad I subscribe to non-traditional, but honest, values.

FTR, I'm on your side. Creationism, ID, etc != science to me either.

Just dealing with the cognitive dissonance of seeing a basically run-of-the-mill guy I know referenced here. That's all.

Updings for Michelle Obama: smart, funny, sharp dresser, good looking.

Downding: her pay rose dramatically when her husband became Senator. Granting that it's hard to walk away from a bribe, a bribe is what the pay raise was. And when she left the job, the wages for that job reverted to the old level.

I think he's a pretty smart, but extremely cynical, guy. He just thinks it's good for him politically to act like this but he definitely understands evolution there is no way you can get an honours degree in biology without doing so.
