Cable News Slapfight!
Rick Sanchez is a very unhappy CNN newsman. And he has good reason, because Fox News published an advertisement that is — no other words for it — blatantly dishonest.

The other agencies explicitly mentioned in the ad - ABC, MSNBC and others - are equally pissed. All fielded reporters and featured the story prominently, and the organizers (for what their take is worth) actually praised ABC for it's balanced coverage.
It looks like lying is the new black.

There is little love lost between Fox ( especially Beck ) and Sanchez:
"...Earlier this week, CNN's Rick Sanchez accused Fox News -- namely Glenn Beck -- of creating an environment of fear and distrust that has led to a surge in gun violence, in particular tying last week's Pittsburgh shooting to "Fox News and right wing radio."
On Beck's radio show Thursday, Beck and staff lashed out against Sanchez, calling Sanchez "the one guy who shouldn't accuse other people of being responsible for murder" over his 1990 drunk driving incident, in which Sanchez struck a pedestrian who would be paralyzed and later die from injuries sustained in the accident..."

This was also unforgivable:
O'Reilly blames teen victim
"... Bill O'Reilly said of Shawn Hornbeck -- who was abducted at the age of 11, held for four years, and recently found in Missouri -- that "there was an element here that this kid liked about this circumstances" and that he "do[esn't] buy" "the Stockholm syndrome thing." O'Reilly also said: "The situation here for this kid looks to me to be a lot more fun than what he had under his old parents. He didn't have to go to school. He could run around and do whatever he wanted." When fellow Fox News host Greta Van Susteren pointed out that "[s]ome kids like school," O'Reilly replied: "Well, I don't believe this kid did."'

I feel, in some ways, bad for Glen Beck, the same as I did for people like Pamela Anderson and Britney Spears and Michael Jackson. He's obviously in poor mental shape and I think he's being exploited. Any organization that pushes an employee in to breakdowns for public consumption is abusive.
O'Reilly is sane, but also a vile fool who is completely responsible for what he says and does.

Fox is going to play to the ratings and money side of things. They always have. They're good at it. If there was a large underserved market for rabid moonbats and the right wing was being served by most of the others, they would be the flaming moonbat channel of choice and still be the ratings leader.

I never heard this story, and all I watch is CNN and FOX. I guess I don't watch that much. I think that there is a lie told within a news organization is not news. What would be news is if one did not. Maybe some who watch more news than I can link me to that news organization who never had such a thing happen within their organization.
I think maybe some people just have a broad brush for those they perceive as in one ideological camp, and a narrower brush, a pass-giving brush, for others. Bill O'Reilly did not propagate the same lie, but he's bad too, as is all FOX news? Judging from Rick Sanchez' righteous piety I would say that one perfect news organization must be CNN. Does anyone here remember the old days of news when they had either COMMENTARY on the bottom of the screen or a cheesy wall with 'Editorial' repeated multiple times when they had those segments in the news?
Now ABSOLUTELY NO news channel or program indicates clearly when they veer off from 'hard' news into commentary.
It's one of the symptoms of the degeneration of television journalism.

Sharmuta, CBS pimped the Bush memo in order to influence the result of the Presidential election. Remember?
Spreading lies about competing news organizations isn't on the same level.
As for CNN, maybe in another decade or so I'll pay attention to them. They've got a lot to make up for regarding their suppressing news out of Baghdad for fear of making Saddam Hussein angry and losing access.
I'm pissed at CNN for their shenanigans during the first Gulf War and also at Christiana Amanpour, who is employed by them (personal reasons that go toward her reputation for compassion). I will watch them if there is a breaking story that deserves video coverage and I also to catch up quickly in the morning. If you only knew how MUCH CNN pissed me off, you would know how much I grew to hate Fox News.

Cronkite opined on the CBS News that the war in Viet Nam was "mired in stalemate" after the Tet Offensive.
It was complete editorial, and also completely untrue.
That was a LONG time ago, in modern memory spans.

BTW, just to putthings into perspective, Fox News, the "Dominant" news channel: "It placed #2 in primetime among all cable channels — behind only USA — and averaged 2.6 million viewers for the week, which included President Obama's first address to a joint session of Congress."
In other words, less than 1 percent of the entire US population watched Fox News during that week.
For more perspective, Battlestar Galactica had double the ratings of O'Reilly, Hannity and the others.
Now, mind you I think those couple million people are dedicated to Fox News, but really, they're not quite the monolith that people would think.

Pimping a fake memo in an attempt to influence the results of a Presidential election isn't even in the same sphere as telling lies about your competitor.
I don't watch Fox, CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC or MSNBC. I don't watch television period. I am not justifying the ad by Fox. Pointing out CNN's egregious behavior doesn't justify what Fox did. I don't like either of them and pointing out that CNN has no moral high ground to stand on doesn't change that.

I do read, lots. And I am very upset that I just finished the last of the Dresden Files and have to wait til next year for the next one.

In Fox News case, it is a self perpetuating thing.
1) Promote an event that is blatantly partisan in all your shows over and over again
2) Blame other news organizations for not cheerleading it
3) Say you're the fair and balanced one.
Am I the only one who sees this charade?

I think it shows lack of journalistic ethics. You want to assign degrees- knock yourself out. Regardless of your degrees, I think both CBS and Fox have shown no professional ethics- neither should be trusted now.
I, like many others, are perfectly capable of researching a story to find the different angles. If someone chooses to get their news off the television, well... all I can say is you're probably not very informed. As for my CNN comment, I just find it funny when they shriek about ethics since they've scored so very, very poorly in that category.
We're talking about TV, for Christ's sake.

We have this essential bit of philosophy trained, beaten and hardwired (as much as possible given human fallability) into PSYOP specialists in the U.S. Army (and, I assume, in our Marine counterparts). Whenever we put out a product, or develop a program designed to inform, persuade or influence, you MUST NOT EVER LIE. Credibility is paramount. If your campaign is less effective than you desire, do your best to change the situation. But NEVER LIE. Once you have been caught lying, even in the most noble of endeavors, your credibility, and therefore, your effectiveness in getting YOUR point across has been compromised. Sometimes fatally.
Basic point, Don't fucking lie!

Orchards are being bulldozed for lack of water. Lots of people are out of work. A state that is already in economic trouble is knee-capping a $36B/year industry that provides 50% of this country's produce.

Frankly, I get most of my news from the net now. I find that it's easier to do my own fact checking than to let someone else do it for me. At least I can be reasonably certain that I'm sorting out the spin from the facts.
So...in all seriousness, where do people go for their fully accurate and unfettered news?
I listen to several different news sources on TV and Radio. It IS interesting to note how many hotels do NOT have FNC but do have all the rest...
News print isn't much better. So where DO people go on the net or otherwise? From my own viewpoint there is NO completely trustworthy news source and its up to the viewer/listener/reader to do their own vetting.

2. I guess FoxNews just opened the door for the alphabets to run video after video of people and their unhinged and/or racist signs. That should help the cause, huh?
Sanchez's reaction is a wee bit over the top here. I don't watch his show, so is he always kinda like this? I thought somebody had insulted him or his wife personally or something.

And how about assuming that if you have to ask whether a certain nasty name is racist, it probably is and you shouldn't use it?Really tired of the racist apologetics and the wide-eyed, faux innocent "But-but-but aren't you saying all criticisms of Obamas are racist?"-- No, just the racist ones.

I watched Sanchez this afternoon, and I'm in agreement with his assessment. Glad I don't have Fox "news"cable ...have never watched it. (On a slightly different note -- about that business with Acorn and the people who went there under false pretences and got the video...Sanchez stated that that would never have been allowed at CNN -- I wondering, why, exactly? Is it because the filmmakers refused to release the entire video and just clipped/edited portions? If they had released the whole thing, would that have made it "ok"? I know that the CBC allows surreptitious video/filming on occasion (a Marketplace film crew does this all the time -- to expose people operating "puppy mills", etc.), it is tolerated under certain strict circumstances -- and there was a "sting" operation by French CBC, released today (about "immigration consultants/lawyers")...I'm wondering about the journalistic ethics of these sorts of things.

re: #260 Slumbering Behemoth
Maybe that's another thread, and I'm not really up for back and forth about it anyway. I mentioned it to point out that Fox often provides coverage of stories that are ignored on CNN and the broadcast networks.
Sanchez' statement that there is a difference between promotion and coverage is ironic, given the many CNN ' special reports' that flood that network, usually promoting one of the administration's pet projects in the form of an hour long informercial. Fox shouldn't have advertised that CNN didn't cover the march.
Instead, they should have emphasized or advertised that CNN barely gave a nod to the ACORN scandal, and then only when its hand was forced by Fox.

Consistent drought conditions (for years), coupled with bone heads on capitol hill who refuse to allow water to flow into the valley because it might endanger a species of fish.
When people look at a few leftist freaks in SF or Berkeley, and wish that California would fall into the ocean, they don't realize just how much food they are wishing off of their plates. They may just get a taste of that if this situation isn't resolved.

I don't care who else hosts Buchanan; I don't watch MSNBC.
William F. Buckley held back for quite a few years, then did an in-depth analysis of Buchanan's printed and spoken words, concluding that he was anti-Semitic. I first read the National Review article, then the book - I was convinced of this conclusion as well.
I think Buchanan has a reputation for speaking, and MSNBC uses him as an exemplar of conservative opinion. That is not a good thing, and you should look into this for yourself to see if you are comfortable with Buchanan.

My favorite quote from that show was this:
I liked the bit about the fundies rotting the brain of America:
The mainstream not just media but culture doesn’t sufficiently take stock of the fact that within our culture we have a sub-culture, which is literally a fifth column of insanity, that is bred from birth through home-school, Christian school, evangelical college, whatever, to reject facts as a matter of faith.
And so this substitute for authentic historic Christianity, and I may add as a little caveat here, I’m a church-going Christian, really brings up the question:
Can Christianity be rescued from Christians?
And that’s an open question and when you see a bunch of people going around thinking that our president is the anti-Christ, you have to draw one of two conclusions: either these are racists looking for any excuse to level the next accusation, or they’re beyond crazy, and I think beyond crazy is a better explanation.
And that evangelical subculture has rotted the brain of the United States of America.
We have a big slice of our population waiting for Jesus to come back, they look forward to Armageddon, good news is bad news to them.
When we talk about the Left Behind series of books that I talk about in my book Crazy for God, what we’re really talking about is a group of people who are resentful because they know they’ve been left behind by modernity, by science, by education, by art, by literature.
The rest of us our getting on with our lives; these people are standing on a hilltop waiting for the end. And this is a dangerous group of people to have as neighbors and they’re our national neighbors and this is the source of all these insanities that we see leveled at the president.
One way or another they go back to this little evangelical subculture… it’s a disaster.

I take it you're talking about a dam where the fish are concerned? So, at first they let water in, and now they don't? The whole thing sounds preposterous.
I know where I live we have a little bit different scenario going on. Farmers have simply sold their land to scummy developers for huge, huge, huge bucks. Had nothing to do with environmentalists. It had everything to do with money. Developers can cram homes for "working families" together, little pretend low-budget McMansions about 6 feet apart, and maximize return per square foot. So, where we used to have farms in between neighbors out here, now we have farms and suckass housing developments.

I've seen clips of (I believe) NBC news doing sting operations on internet pedophiles, which I totally support, BTW. So the ACORN thing doesn't seem all that outrageous, IMHO.

I've look for a thread at HA discussing LGF but can't find one. I found a green room though. Anyway, I quit reading HA a long while back. Cap'n Ed became insufferable. He's pretty much a spokesperson for the Fifth Column of Insanity Frank Schaeffer talked about on Rachel Maddow's show. And Allah eventually followed him down that rabbit hole.
It's fun to watch the scales fall from peoples eyes. This site and John Cole's place are my favorite blogs at this time.
Ed Morrissey, the fifth column of insanity? LOL
Er, not so much.
Should they have put the kibosh on offensive comments long ago? Oh yeah. Spring 2008 they had a few commenters who would show up and spread the "John McCain spent his POW time in a Peking hotel with hookers" line of crap, and not once did Allah, Ed, or Malkin ever come down to reply. They do have a stable that is half full of the unhinged, sadly.
But I don't think you could really call Ed a counterpart to Medea Benjamin or anything. LOL

Major construction, in the millions... hundreds of jobs for people who can ill afford to lose them... ground to a halt, by order of the EPA... all on a rumor. Still hasn't recovered.
It turns out it was just a rumor, right? I read about the bird hunters who were trying to verify/find the thing a couple of years ago. It's been extinct (or so it's believed) since the 1920s or so? But i has a cousin that's almost identical that is still around in large numbers?

If you want some background information on VDARE, this is a good start: Keeping America White.
VDare and other sites of similar (both left and right) have accepted the idea of 'co-mingling' with those with with lesser values (and ethics and morals) under the guise of 'the free exchange ideas'.
That's why LGF has pissed off so many people lately.
Abiding by and demanding moral and ethical standards from everyone is taxing. After all, it is so much easier to be a mindless follower.

Exactly.
My parents lived up there for a while and besides, the whole California water history is really convoluted and messy.
To say that it's over the a fish is disingenuous to the point of meaninglessness.
This really in not a case that be be simple-mindedly attributed to Tree huggers or whatnot, it's about where the water goes, south to LA or to the farmers.
It's a big story, but not an easy one.
Things like this are usually complicated. The fish DOES have a LOT to do with it, however.

re: #49 tradewind
You don't hear much about the way that the San Joaquin valley farm industry is literally dying because of the EPA protection of the freaking delta smelt... a two inch fish... that denies water to the farmers... at least Fox has covered that.
FOX "covered" it by ranting that "the government cares more about fish than farmers". Another simplistic take on reality, on their part.
The San Joaquin was never an ideal place for agriculture. The farming there was started up purely by the use of artificial irrigation, and on a speculative bet that they would always be able to divert enough water to continue farming.
They try to put the face of small time farmers on this story, but what you have in the San Joaquin Valley corporate agriculture interests who made huge profits from unsound water speculation and irrigation practices.
Now that someone is pointing out that it is unsound and unsustainable, they are wailing about "fish over people!"
It's a load of crap.

Got a snarky email from Ed Morrissey just to put the icing on the cake.
How depressing. What the hell happened to Ed? He used to be so rational. And normal.
I noticed, in his acknowledgment of all that nasty comments at Hot Air, that he tried to deflect it partially by claiming imposters were posting things just to make Hot Air look bad - which dodges the whole issue of who's moderating the joint. I was dismayed to see that from Ed - at CQ he was always a stand-up guy, and was always quick to acknowledge his own shortcomings and publish retractions and apologies when appropriate. For a while, I was prepared to be charitable and assume Ed was only doing it for the money, which he certainly has need of. But it's one thing to generate income by appealing to the lowest common denominator (still a bad thing, but understandable if the ROI is high enough, I suppose) and quite another to let that poison spread throughout your own system, as seems to be happening from your description. Nasty emails are a sign that he's not just putting up a front in order to draw a paycheck; it indicates that he actually believes the shit he's peddling.
The GOP better get their shit together in a hurry. The Internet is rapidly becoming indispensible during elections, and they certainly aren't going to get any help at all out of the current crowd of rightward blogs when even a gnat-hair's departure from extremist ideology will earn you a Titanic-load of shit from the readership.
Maybe the Conservatives putting down roots in the Democratic party are a better bet for advancing that movement. The GOP is rapidly losing the ability to advance any sort of reasonable agenda.

O'Reilly is hot shit. Don't allow envy to distort perception.
O'Reilly is a disgusting creep who stuck up for Dan Rather during Rathergate, and bears some responsibility for creating the atmosphere that resulted in the murder of Dr. George Tiller -- he repeated "Tiller the babykiller" dozens of times on his show, compared him to Nazis, said he was running a death factory, etc.
He demonized the man to a degree that was completely despicable, then played dumb when people called him on it and claimed he'd never done it.
O'Reilly is scum.

I saw it - the comments were ok, but again, Hawaii didn't really need to say that Fox News was "ranting" about the story. Commentary shows like Hannity, should be able to cover a story like this one without being called "ranting." I think the subject has been covered a couple of times, but it certainly hasn't been on the level of "ranting." This is a serious thing for thousands of families, and could affect the food supplies to the rest of the country.

Hmm. Water for farmers or water for Hollywood?

The soil is ideal for agriculture. The location/weather, not so much.
Do you have a link, or can you direct me to a site with more info beyond the fish thing? It would be appreciated, because I do want to be informed about this.
Though this story is getting a lot of attention lately, I remember hearing about it months and months ago, at which time I got some more in depth information about it. I couldn't point you to anything off the top of my head.
Searching for it in the news today, this is one of the first things that comes up. If you can get past the fact that it's a political piece in an "indy" paper, the story does contain some good background information further down the page.

No where. I think that it was stated by someone upstairs that the amount of electricity it takes for desalination is cost prohibitive. Another thing that has hurt the Ag industry is the new Trucking laws in CA.

Ted, if you're still there:
I dunno what "homophobic" terms you used, since your posts with those terms were deleted, but here's the thing -- even if you were to use those terms towards a homosexual who overwhelmingly deserves it (and in this category I'd put Paul Morris, founder of Treasure Island Media, a gay-pr0n company that relentlessly markets "bareback" videos), it's still going to be cherry picked by LGF-haters in order to attack Charles for allowing such terms, howsoever justified they might have been in the context. And from what I gather, in your posts you weren't directing "faggot" or "cocksucker" or "fudgepacker" or whatever towards actual homos (like myself or Mr. Paul Morris), but just to disparage people with different politics than yours. Which means that you're basically creating a headache for Charles in a context where it's not even remotely necessary.
Note that Charles didn't allow "faggot" etc. in the comments even when he posted the zombietime report about the incredibly irresponsible and anti-social behavior shown by some gay men in the Folsom Street Fair (which overlaps a bit with what Treasure Island Media does). So how much LESS should he tolerate it when the context has nothing to do with homosexuality in any literal sense, and certain words are being used as metaphoric insults?

Than I'm a populist on a 50% to 50% issue.
The point that comes to mind is that O'Reilly sells himself as fair and balanced, and to be fair he often can be, but he is perfectly prepared to dump that for the emotion of the moment when it suits him, particularly when it involves religion.
I've heard him promoting conspiracies against Christmas while I was decorating the tree, for example. But I have to listen to some of this stuff to be able to post here, don't I?

No where. I think that it was stated by someone upstairs that the amount of electricity it takes for desalination is cost prohibitive. California produces the finest agricultural goods (except for citrus...possibly) in the US and we all will pay a price for having it take a hit. Another thing that has hurt the Ag industry is the new Trucking laws in CA.

PRISONERS at the Guantanamo Bay detention centre will now be able to talk to their families via video link, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on Friday.
'This video link offers detainees and their families a new way of communicating with each other,' said the ICRC's Jens-Martin Mehler.
The Geneva-based group said the 'strictly humanitarian' measure, set up by the ICRC and the US military, was launched on Thursday and 60 prisoners had already signed up to use the service.
Each call would last an hour and would be limited to members of the immediate family and other close relatives, the ICRC said in a statement.
Conversations would not be allowed to stray beyond family and personal news and would be monitored by authorities at the US centre in Cuba, the ICRC added.

What strikes me about racists most is their absolute cowardice. I was in jump school and had two roommates - one white, one black. Most of the time we were in recovery mode getting for the next day of training together in the same room. One time when our black roommate was away, the white guy started piping up about how proud he was of his grand-daddy who was a Dragon (something-or-other) in the KKK. I shut him down quickly by telling him to share this with our other roommate.
This also demonstrates their abject stupidity in believing that every other person who shares their race believes as they do.

You know what -- I don't have a problem with it. They're not letting the high value detainees take part. Only 60 inmates so far. Some of those people have been held for up to 7 years, and they've never even had a trial.
So long as it's all tightly monitored and they won't let the high value detainees take part, I don't have an objection.
The humanitarian programme, launched quietly on Thursday, is available to all but the "high-value detainees" singled out by U.S. authorities, ICRC spokesman Simon Schorno said.
"U.S. authorities have the right to prevent detainees from taking part and also have the right to monitor and censor the video-conferencing calls," Schorno told Reuters.

One could also argue that holding people without charge at Gitmo could radicalise their families, or leave their sons open to radicalisation. They've got sons growing up without them, and those are the right age groups to be recruited for jihad. If they have access to their actual father in US custody, and their father can tell them he's ok and being treated well, maybe that leaves the sons and younger brothers less vulnerable to being recruited and manipulated by murderous scum.
They prefer to recruit young men for their suicide missions, never go themselves. Like the attacks in Mumbai.

I'd like to be optimistic, but then I remember to amount of planning and cleverness these scum put into attacking us. I worry that they'll find a way to use this against us. And always I keep in mind this rule for dealing with terrorists:
We have to win all the time, they only have to win once. And the prospect of losing call privileges or even being beaten won't faze some of them, since they already consider their lives forfeit to the cause. Several of them might try approaches and get cut off, just looking for weaknesses in our screening methods. Inmates use such methods all the time in US prisons.

Your original "why it's different" was that "in order to influence the result of the Presidential election" is a wholly other category to "spreading lies about competing news organizations."
Now it's that there's no equivalence when it's the seriousness of what they're lying about.
Of course, I could also point out that "not doing due diligence, being fooled by something you wanted to believe" is a different than "making things up entirely." Or that an organization that fires people over the incident shows more integrity than one that doesn't.
But if said either of those things, you'd find a way to move the goalposts again.

I cannot stand Fox News... never have been able to. Even with CNN's far more subtle biases, I have always preferred watching CNN to FNC. The only time I can remember flipping to FNC on a regular basis was during the war in Lebanon because the bias of CNN against Israel was hard to stomach for too long, so I would occasionally balance things out by watching FNC (which was clearly biased in favor of Israel). CNN is barely watchable, but at least they don't out and out lie. FNC has only become more unwatchable as the years have gone on. They don't even try to hide their biases and agenda. But this lie is so obvious and so silly, I don't know how they can do it with a straight face. I didn't need this particular lie to tell me that FNC is complete and utter crap.

Uh, no. Kids who grow up having lost their father to war or a POW camp (or whatever you want to call Gitmo) are prime material for recruitment and radicalisation for Jihad-- even if their fathers themselves were innocent or nonradical. That's a fact.

Have they gotten better? Cuz this still really irritates me:Army targets reporters in Iraq
And this part especially:
He touched off a furor with a New York Times op-ed piece in April 2003, saying CNN had withheld information about some of Saddam Hussein's abuses out of concern for its Iraqi employees in Baghdad. This sparked criticism that the network was collaborating with a murderer's regime to maintain its access. Jordan wrote that Hussein's son Uday had told him in 1995 of plans to assassinate two of his brothers-in-law and the man giving them asylum, King Hussein of Jordan. The CNN executive said he had warned the king; the brothers-in-law were later killed.
Old news I know. I just have trouble letting it go.

Rick who? I swear, never heard of him. What time is his shown on CNN?re: #528 J.S.
Haha! I've only seen his show once and that was while standing in line for lunch about six months ago or so. I had never heard of him before then. It was the also the first time I really had seen what Twitter is or does (I still think it's completely idiotic) and some person was tweeting or whatever it's called that she was in a bathroom stall and that she thought the girl in the next stall over was tweeting too. Very appetizing waiting for my sushi at Sansei. How does that even get on a news channel feed?
All I kept asking myself was why is this on CNN? How about some stock quotes or something? It was weird. I looked around to see if anyone else had noticed but everyone had their faces buried into their blackberries probably tweeting. That was enough for me to know that I wanted nothing to do with Twitter and that I'd pass on watching Sanchez. I'm normally not in a position to watch TV during his show hours anyway.

You are too considerate. The first part in particular assumes that "radicalization" is triggered by a specific event and that the fundamentals, cultural/social, have nothing to do do with it. It is a common leftist theme; as in "our fault".
Antisemitism, for example, isn't triggered because someone was beaten up by a Jewish kid, and white skinheads don't hate blacks for the same reason. It comes from within. One has to blame someone for problems, real or imagined.

No, not at all. I'm assuming a baseline where all the factors you mention are already in play. Then I'm imagining a specific individual, say a boy about 10 years old, whose older brother or father is taken away and imprisoned in Gitmo without word or trial for 6 years or more.
Such an individual will necessarily grow up more inclined to look for 'father figures' 9and thus more vulnerable to the recruiting techniques we KNOW these people use), even more predisposed to have a resentment towards America, and possibly more likely to be turned to the service of violent jihad.
It's at least possible that having some contact with that relative, where the relative says I'm ok and they're treating me well. would help keep others from using that relative's imprisonment to foster hate in the boy. (they have your father and you can't talk to him because they've torn out his tongue, or whatever lies they're spreading.)

Thanks for the video link Charles. I had been favoring Fox news over the other news/editorial cable channels. This gives me pause.
I find the Fox ad appalling in its dishonesty. I take some comfort in Mr. Sanchez' passion in rebutting the smear cast against his network. Fox News raised expectations for itself by adopting the "fair and balanced" slogan. It has failed to live up to that standard.
I take some comfort in the hope that the "fair and balanced" gauntlet, so carelessly dropped by Fox News, will be taken up in earnest by that network's competition.

Several family members of mine get just about all their news from FOX news. They consider it the only place to get fair and balanced news. The other day one of them said to me that Glenn Beck speaks the truth. He agreed with me that Beck is an extremist but then replied "but what he says is true" This came from the same person who voted for Clinton then Gore then Bush. Not exactly a history of being a partisan. But ever since he started watching FOX news he has become very partisan and ideological. I think he may believe that no news station would outright lie so what Glenn Beck says must be true
Trying to have a political discussion with these people is impossible. The other day he says to me "Global warming is bull, there's actually global cooling" Then he says Acorn is getting 8 billion from the stimulus.
Where does he get this? Fox News

I was on my way to Spain 9/12 and was in the USAir lounge on a long layover.
I was on the phone with friends who were in Washington all day.
I got more out of them of course then I did on CNN which seems reasonable but still I had to watch 30 to 40 minutes of “news” before I saw 120 second segments of Washington coverage.
In fact I think they spent more time on the weather then they did the current happenings in Washington.
I didn’t see a thing about it on ABC or MSNBC but that could be because I wasn’t running round trying to determine coverage.
While in Spain I saw nothing on the BBC or CNN during the week.
I saw Rick Sanchez on the way back and saw his rebuke of FOX …I thought to myself “What? all of a sudden the MSM is upset about selective truth”?
Hell, they perfected it.
A little hypocritical of CNN to make demands for apologies because they can point out some coverage biases on a competitor.
Fair and Balanced, Fair and Balanced…Yea right nothing is fair and nothing is balanced.

Seems to me FOX has found and is fostering a market.
There is a lot more irrational thinking going on in the left MSM then there is on the right MSM
It is no surprise that the irrational left loses market to the opposite of irrational thinking.
Especially when they call them stupid, redneck, gun toting, religion loving separatists.
Conservatism is a legitimate form of social construct. There are a lot more Conservatives in America then progressives. If there are not then we are about to see it.

Yes, Fox has found and is fostering a market, but you are saying that telling lies in the process is perfectly all right.
Since when does the end justify the means? Since when does ... 'but they're doing MORE of it, so don't complain about us' ... justify the telling of a bald-faced lie?

Problem is, when Fox says something like this, it usually means what it says. The "we didn't mean it like that" is just a weak attempt at damage control.
