Just the traditional overnight thread; no quote this time because I want the Robert Stacy McCain post to stay at the top of the page.

At least, America is AWARE of the existence of widespread racism and many Americans have engaged in serious dialogue with friends, co-workers, family and peers about racist attitudes and racism...

Try living in countries where people THINK 'we're racially pure, WE are the only real US' and haven't even BEGUN to really examine race, racism and racists...

So the achilles heel of the right is 'racism', race-baiting, 'racism apologetics', spending money like drunk sailors (no offense to drunk sailors), shoving 'creationism' into schools, picking and choosing which 'values' to shove in people's faces, and a sad push, if not any push, for 'science'.

But hey, that's ok, at least this isn't the majority and at least future elections will not be affected by it...uh...WAIT!

re: #34 freetoken

You'd be surprised... the real difficulty is in Thai-language's simplicity... no articles, little tense, word-order and context being key...

But I hear you, Free, although Thai grammar resembles French (dog black) and the word order is English (I want eat food) it IS another language, and has nuances and pitfalls peculiar to, well, Thai...

Thinking about these questions earlier today as I was about my daily business, I came to the conclusion that they are here. Not just our host, but many of the commenters and contributors here. And not just here, but many other places.

And for this, he's 'Uncle Tom!'-slapped, criticized as Oreo (black outside, white inside) and otherwise heaped with insult by some black Americans...

Dr. Huxtible stated such programing is responsible for the 'decline of American values' and the 'perversion of America's youth', citing it's regular usage of 'filth, flarn, and filth'.

When reached for comment, sitcom star Fenway was quoted as saying 'Tell Cliff to have a Coke, and a Jello Pudding Pop, and a smile, and STFU."

A confession of sorts:
I thought I was pretty well-informed about the former right-wing fringe, fast becoming the mainstream. I knew not just about Birchers, of course, but about the CCC, VDare, and American Renaissance. It is still quite shocking to learn just how deeply these openly racist groups have managed to embed themselves and their influence into the Republican base and, especially, into the right wing of the internet. They worked away behind the scenes for years, always cultivating an image of respectability; constantly expanding, one convert at a time.
In this, they were helped by mainstream GOP politicians and pundits who either ignored them or who helped sanitize them by openly courting them, trading away the credibility of the Party of Lincoln for the votes of a mob of bigots.

But these personal attacks on a main post, insults and demonisations are beyond the pale. Attacking Shamuta like that is petty, gratuitous and more than a little spooky. They really reveal ignorance and avarice.

They are also simply wrong in their criticisms, wether this is from ignorance, bias or just bold faced lying I can't say, but it is obvious.

It's a bit mystifying, considering that Charles is a mac user; macs have always had native Unicode.

As I understand it, the problem is one of keeping long strings within the borders of the entries column. That is, very long strings call spill over into the side column, and make a page go crazy wide.

To keep that from happening, the parsing hamster is trained to breakup long strings. That is why, when you type in a string of more than 3 of any one character that string gets chomped down to a string of just 3 characters.

The problem with typing in a long string of Unicode is that the hamster doesn't know it is supposed to be a long string of Unicode, and so chomps away.

At least that is what I gathered from Charles' explanation.

The Cosby Show was one of the hallmarks of growing up in the 80s. Bill Cosby has had a lot of really good stuff to say since then. I don't know why he's so controversial in some quarters. From where I stand, most of what he says is good, common sense advice and commentary.

*nod* Unfortunately there's a fair bunch of people on both sides who make money or headlines or get a fair amount of self-aggrandizement when they can keep people divided.

There is real racism, sexism and homophobia in society, but it's not found in every criticism of a person of color, woman or GLBT person.

To say so diminishes the situation when someone encounters and is hurt by real racisim, sexism or homophobia.

To flounce, or to mindlessly fling epithets denigrates real suffering and is an expression of personal arrogance, as in "I am a more perfect human than YOU are, so I can stand in judgment of YOU, Vulgar Peon!"

I love this post from P.J. Myers at Pharyngula -

Fear the atheist

The results of yet another poll are out, showing that the godless are rising and promise to rise for years to come. In 1990, we made up 8% of the population; now in 2009, we're 15%. They're extrapolating forward and estimating that we will make up 25% of the country in 20 years.

It's not enough, is all I can say. I suppose it's good news, but I am disappointed in my fellow Americans. I will not be content until the number is 100%. (OK, 95%. It's not fair to demand rationality from people who are brain damaged or locked up in asylums.)

The really bizarre news here is the way people are squirming to put a twist to the data to reassure the believers. They've got a label for that 15% that isn't "godless atheist unbelievers": they are "Nones". Don't panic, they say, only 10% of them call themselves "atheists"! They're mostly agnostics and skeptics of organized religion! You don't have to stockpile food and ammo, bar the doors and windows, and prepare for the anarchy and evil that would follow if all those people were atheists.

Fear the atheist

[Link: scienceblogs.com...]

I love P-Zed.

It's rather annoying. Every article I see on this subject makes this desperate rush to reassure their readers that this growing cohort of Americans aren't really those goddamned atheists — they're nice people, unlike those cold-hearted, soulless beasts called atheists, and they aren't planning to storm your churches and rape the choir boys and boil babies in the baptismal fonts, unlike the scary atheistic monsters. They're special. And most of all, they aren't French.

"American nones are kind of agnostic and deistic, so it's a very American kind of skepticism," says Barry Kosmin, director of Trinity's Institute for the Study of Secularism in Society and Culture. "It's a kind of religious indifference that's not hostile to religion the way they are in France. Franklin and Jefferson would have recognized these people."

Oh, please. All the low frequency of self-reported atheists in the survey tells you is that the long-running campaign in American culture to stigmatize atheism has been highly successful — and it's an attitude that we still see expressed in reports like this. The most important news they try to transmit is not the increase in unbelievers, it's "Thank God they aren't atheists! They're just rational skeptics, instead!"

Atheism is not a state to be avoided. It does not distort your features so that the founding fathers would throw you out of the country as an undesirable alien. It does not give you a French accent. It doesn't even make you want to bomb churches. We are "rational skeptics," too, we're just the ones who aren't afraid to confront the social conventions that insist that you must be churched or in some way pious in order to be a good person — we are just the ones who will get in beatifically complacent faces and tell them they're wallowing in bullshit.

You need an awesome opening credit sequence where you're mowing lawns with your tshirts off, fighting fires, working in construction...all half naked and slo-mo and glistening, with something like this playing in the background:

Then it can end with you both waking up on your respective casting couches, and you-- and us ladies watching-- simultaneously realising it was all a dream. :(

Last night I went to buy some ice cream (one of the six or seven basic Geek food groups). Now it was bad enough when the reduced the size of containers from 2 quarts to 1.75 quarts, but they've done it again and put ice cream on a diet and reduced it to 1.5 quarts!

If we the rest of us could only lose that much 15% of our weight that quickly or easily, then the dairy industry would be going gang busters...

As in if you do not keep your Corporate Charter in good standing,

individual,,, ie, the illegal acts of the board of directors in those states
would be such that if they directed others to do so and so, and that act is illegal,, RICO reaches each one of them individually.

They are definitely doing this and it makes me mad, especially since dairy prices are way down from a year or two ago. I don't think it is collusion at all, just a visible dumb idea being copied. Capitalism should take care of it since someone can use the lower costs this year and trumpet what the others are doing while they go back to the original size.

I don’t know how that happened, but it could prove awkward for the President who said just the other day, that he wasn’t following the ACORN scandal at all, and feigned surprise that they receive loads of federal money..who knew!?

See Redstate for the list of contacts, which include Patrick Gaspard:

Patrick Gaspard was the Executive Vice President for the SEIU until Barack Obama asked Gaspard to become his Presidential Campaign’s National Political Director. Once in the White House, Gaspard became Barack Obama’s Director of the Office of Political Affairs. He is Barack Obama’s Karl Rove, but unlike Rove, eschews the spotlight, which is why so many compare David Axelrod to Rove.

Bertha Lewis has the office, cell phone, home number, and private personal email address of Patrick Gaspard.

Yes, it has happened with cereal too, although I don't think it was as severe as what I saw with ice cream. I doubt it is driven by the markets though, as the trend there has been to push stocking cost (i.e. labor) to vendors / suppliers. In addition, when the first round occurred (2 qt to 1.75 qt) the footprint of the container really didn't change, so there was no change in shelf space allocation. With this downshift, there is a small change in footprint though.

If this were a driver however, you would expect brands like Edys and Breyers to revert to traditional rectilinear packaging (which allows for the densest packing of a given space) rather than trapezoidal (Breyers) or cylindrical (Edy's).

Interesting. I wonder if smaller containers is a trend also being driven by stores - they can carry more SKUs. Didn't this happen with cereal boxes recently?

This got rolling last year, when food prices spiked along with oil prices; rather than raise prices, a lot of companies started reducing package size.

Food prices have since dropped, but why let a good scam go to waste now that they know consumers aren't really paying attention?

226 JamesTKirk  Wed, Sep 23, 2009 5:43:45am

It's a money thing. I recall seeing some corporate guy asked about it earlier this year. He blamed the economy, and said that they had to either raise prices or reduce quantities.

227 NJDhockeyfan  Wed, Sep 23, 2009 5:46:55am

Exotic clunkers also fueled recent program

At its creation, a 1997 Bentley Continental R was one of the most powerful and exclusive cars in the world, with every hand-built copy from the English countryside valued at $300,000 and beyond.

A few weeks back, the owner of one such Continental R decided it wasn’t worth more than $4,500, had its engine destroyed and shipped it to a junkyard with the rest of America’s clunkers.

It’s one of several rare or surprisingly new vehicles destroyed under the Obama administration’s cash for clunkers program designed to sweep old gas guzzlers off U.S. roads. According to new government data, the rebates of $3,500 or $4,500 were enough to doom the Continental and a ’97 Aston Martin DB7 Volante that once had a sticker price of $135,000 to the crusher.

And 37 people decided to clunk models that were less than a year old.

Conservative commentator Glenn Beck caused a bit of a stir this week, saying on the debut of @katiecouric, Katie Couric's new web-only interview show, that Sen. John McCain "would have been worse for the country than Barack Obama."

Beck also told Couric that McCain was a "weird progressive" like Theodore Roosevelt.

Well, McCain took that as a compliment, saying on the "The Early Show" Wednesday that "any time my name is mentioned in the same breath as Teddy Roosevelt, I am honored. Teddy Roosevelt's my hero."

Gosh, Theodore Roosevelt or Glenn Beck? Aargh, the GOP has lost its mind.

Oh sure, it sounds stupid when you say it that way.

A lot of things sound stupid when I say them. I wonder why that is.

Anyway, that's the way they'd sell it. They wouldn't want to admit that they'd reduced the quantities in the the first place (for the people who hadn't noticed) nor would they get as much mileage from just telling you "we're back to giving you what we gave you before." If/when quantities are raised again, they will be marketed solely as "Look at this! You're getting more than you did yesterday!"

Don't you remember on Mr. Mom when she suggested that they keep their tuna prices low during the recession "for America"? It worked great.

Most people already know of the Rough Riders and their historic charge up San Juan Hill, but few know that, since their horses had to be left behind, the Riders made this charge entirely on foot. You just could not stop this man from violencing the hell out of a San Juan Hill.

Roosevelt lost more men at San Juan Hill from bad canned meat than he lost in battle. It was one reason he became so involved in the creation of the FDA as president. Roosevelt also became known as a trust-buster and said he was for a "square deal" for everybody.

I recommend reading up on him. He was a compelling figure and an amazing patriot.

It's a money thing. I recall seeing some corporate guy asked about it earlier this year. He blamed the economy, and said that they had to either raise prices or reduce quantities.

Reducing the size for the same amount of money IS raising prices. Do they think we're stupid?

An excellent read is The River of Doubt by Candice Millard. It focuses on Roosevelt's last major expedition, in South America, where he damn near died, but it provides large amounts of background material and serves as a very good biography of a truly larger-than-life American.

Can't you just feel the hate and smell the ignorance?

I have not heard a serious minded, thoughtful Palestinian speak of Tel Aviv as a settlement. The only context under which I have heard it relates to the communities built in the land which belonged to Jordan prior to the 1967 war, but which was conquered by Israel, but never annexed.
Here is an article that may give you a broader view of the settlements. There are hundreds of thousands of settlers. Many are in settlements for "quality of life issues." But, most estimates say that the "ideological settlers" (the crazy dudes who live in trailers, burn Palestinian fields, throw stones at Palestinian children and the like) are at least 100,000 strong.
It is likely that Israel will forcibly remove the "crazies" at some point. But, it is doubtful that they will ever allow the settlements surrounding Jerusalem to go over to the Palestinians. The path taken by the "security barrier" is proof of this. Israel is determined to keep ALL of Jerusalem at any costs even as the Palestinians continue to insist that their capital is East Jerusalem. But, by means of systematic ethnic cleansing brought about by housing demolitions and tolerance of settler behavior, Israel may end up cutting off the future Palestinian state from access to its most economically prosperous population center and thereby crippling the economy of the proposed Palestinian state. Israel's moves on this issue are deliberate and calculated, designed to create "facts on the ground" to solidify their claim to ownership of Jerusalem as a whole rather than just West Jerusalem.

Finally, in places in the West Bank where the Israelis stole land (all of the settlements are on stolen land) they may be forced to give up that land.

Any links to Tel Aviv being posited as a settlement would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Michael Moore watch...

This happened last night…

1. Esquire sponsors the premiere of ‘Capitalism: A Love Story’. Michael Moore’s new shocking and inspirational doc about hard times in America and the evils of capitalism.

2. Following the Premiere, Esquire shuttles many of the attendees straight down to SoHo to the opening of The Esquire Apartment – a fully decadent penthouse where every square inch is paid for by a luxury sponsor. Hot tub, $120k pool table, $60k home theater, fine food. The only thing lacking was a doormat saying “Welcome To Capitalism.”

I had fun….But oooh the irony. Everyone I talked to was like, “man, this is the most bizarre combination. I bet Michael Moore would freak out if he saw that this was happening.”….And then he showed up. And was eating it up. And then one of the families from the film came.

Hahahahahahaha!

To call Michael Moore a pile of steaming sh*t is an insult to an actual pile of steaming sh*t. He's nothing but a hypocrite and a liar. Every single one of his movies smacks of dishonesty. The sad thing is, he actually does have some talent. Too bad he wastes it with his phony and trumped up "documentaries". His movies are political screeds, not documentaries. He has his premise and his idea...then, he films stuff, some real, some made up, to "prove" his point.

This current movie is the most galling. Here's a fat fu*k, living the life of luxury, benefitting from the very same system he is mocking. Try making a living in North Korea or Cuba, you dumbass MFer. See if that gets you a $1 million+ condo in Greenwich Village.

Did you know HOV lanes are racist?

A lawsuit filed by Arlington County last month claims the lanes benefit wealthy white people and discriminates against minorities. While the only rule to get in the HOV lanes on Interstate 395 is you must have three people in the car, Arlington claims adding HOT lanes would cut out poor and minorities by defacto.

That claim doesn't sit well with Fairfax County Supervisor Pat Herrity (R-Springfield).

"I don't think race or class warfare has any standing in this argument," Herrity said.

Buried in the lawsuit filed last month, county attorneys argued the HOT lanes, "encourage and enable a financially-able, privileged class of suburban and rural, primarily Caucasian residents from Stafford and Spotsylvania counties operating single occupancy vehicles ("SOV") unimpeded access on toll lanes."

In other words, it benefits wealthy white people.

A few pages later, the suit claims the Federal Highway Administration and the Virginia Department of Transportation failed to do the proper environmental analysis and that "their actions also constituted civil rights violations as they discriminated against minority and low income communities."

(CBS/AP) Seizing a chance to challenge the world, President Obama says the global community is failing its people and fixing that is not "solely America's endeavor."

"Those who used to chastise America for acting alone in the world cannot now stand by and wait for America to solve the world's problems alone," Obama said in a passage of the speech he was delivering Wednesday to the United Nations General Assembly.

The White House released excerpts in advance that carried a remarkably blunt tone.

It comes in Obama's first speech to this world body, a forum like none other for a leader hoping to wash away any lasting images of U.S. unilateralism under President George W. Bush.

In essence, Obama's message is that he expects plenty in return for reaching out.

"We have sought in word and deed a new era of engagement with the world," Obama said, echoing the cooperative theme he promised as a candidate and has since used as a pillar of his foreign policy. "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility."

UNITED NATIONS -- Canada will boycott Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's speech at the United Nations on Wednesday, saying his outbursts about the Holocaust and Israel are "shameful."

Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon will be at the world body to attend the opening of the UN General Assembly's annual debate, but officials signal he and other members of the Canadian delegation will vacate the Canadian seats when the Islamic republic's President approaches the podium.

Walking out of the chamber is seen as a strong diplomatic show of disgust at the UN -- and since the chamber is generally packed on the first day of the annual summit, Canada's empty seats will not go unnoticed.

And how exactly did "Palestinians" come to be the lawful owners of all the land the settlements are built on (which was almost entirely undeveloped). The only way the "Palestinians" could be "owners" of the land they claim is they stole it from somebody else.

Waving keys does not prove ownership.

The "Royal Kingdom of Jordan" and the "Royal Kingdom of Saudi Arabia" is on land that the British stole from the Ottomans.

The UN loves Barack Obama because he is weak

The UN is not a club of democracies - who still remain a minority within its membership – it is a vast melting pot of free societies, socialist regimes and outright tyrannies. Obama’s clear lack of interest in human rights issues is a big seller at the UN, where at least half its members have poor human rights records.

The president scores highly at the UN for refusing to project American values and military might on the world stage, with rare exceptions like the war against the Taliban. His appeasement of Iran, his bullying of Israel, his surrender to Moscow, his call for a nuclear free world, his siding with Marxists in Honduras, his talk of a climate change deal, have all won him plaudits in the large number of UN member states where US foreign policy has traditionally been viewed with contempt.

Simply put, Barack Obama is loved at the UN because he largely fails to advance real American leadership. This is a dangerous strategy of decline that will weaken US power and make her far more vulnerable to attack.

World's hairiest man to undergo surgery

The world's hairiest man is to undergo plastic surgery after failing to win a part in a television drama.

Yu Zhenghuan, 32, has 96% of his body covered with a thick layer of black hair, reports Zhejiang Online.

He was confident of landing a lead role in a production of Chinese classic Journey to the West which tells how a monkey helps his Buddhist master.

"I thought I was the best candidate, as I look like a monkey and my nickname is Monkey Man," said Yu.

"I read through the book and found professional hair dressers to make me into a real monkey man. But I failed the audition because I am not good looking enough.

"I am going to have surgery to get rid of the hair and facial plastic surgery to make myself look more like a pretty monkey, and let the director regret his decision."

Regarding the lawsuit alleging the HOV lanes are racist.

Obviously this idea is absurd.

However: Arlington County Chair Barbara Favola says the race issue only arose because the environmental review includes socioeconomic impact.

Assuming what she said is true, it looks like what happened here is that the county attorney(s) discovered they must include a socioeconomic impact statement. Instead of stating "none" or "minimal" or whatever, they grasped at straws and put in the race thing. The analogy would be where an attorney files a personal injury lawsuit and includes every conceivable cause of action under the sun as a matter of standard practice, in order to satisfy all filing requirements.

It looks to me like the real objection over the HOV lanes was clearly in regard to other issues and the race thing was clumsily put in by some idiot or idiots to satisfy a procedural issue. Pretty stupid, but distinguishable from Sharptonesque nonsense - no one was agitating against the HOV lanes on racial grounds unless there is more to this story than in the clip.

So Israel and the Palestinians are supposed to talk without preconditions?
Not according to Abbas:
PM, Abbas draw contrasting conclusions

While Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu emerged from his meeting with US President Barack Obama and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas Tuesday saying that the Palestinians had dropped their preconditions for negotiations, and that the discussion now centered on the framework of the talks, Abbas himself announced that nothing less than an Israeli withdraw to the 1967 borders would enable resuming peace talks.

The articles I see in the US press don't say either way.
Is Abbas saying one thing Obama and then going back to his original opinion, or did Obama say one thing to Netanyahu and something else to Abbas? Or say something so vague both sides took him to support their position?

In any case, it looks like nothing is going to come of this, thanks to the Palestinians (but Israel will be blamed anyway.)

Migrants in the Calais jungle pledge to defend mosque

Members of the elite CRS police unit will tomorrow start to raze the camp, popularly known as the "jungle", which has been used by thousands preparing covert journeys to Britain.

Some 500 migrants were still living in the litter-strewn woods yesterday, just a few hundred yards from Calais port.

While most are resigned to seeing their tarpaulin and wooden shelters torn to the ground, they are determined to preserve the mosque.

"It is a holy place where we pray night and day. The police must not harm it,' said Rachid, a 21-year-old Afghan. "We are expecting the worst when the police arrive, but we will defend our mosque at all costs."

re: #411 Occasional Reader

That would be my guess.

Man, that would have to be incredibly vague...I'd like someone to try and put together a paragraph that would do exactly that.

"We are meeting here today and it is an historic occasion. We must not squander this occasion but agree to meet with the best interests of both parties at heart."

Nope, not vague enough.

415 vxbush  Wed, Sep 23, 2009 7:29:41am

re: #412 spare o'lake

I don't buy that.
Israel's friends don't want Israel to cease to EXIST - it's just that they don't want Israel to fully defeat its enemies.
In fact, since WWII I don't think it is considered by most nations permissible for any Western nation to fight and win ANY war, certainly not in the conventional sense.

I would have to concur. No western nation can look too good, too powerful. That would make everyone else feel bad.

It is a holy place where we pray night and day. The police must not harm it,' said Rachid, a 21-year-old Afghan. "We are expecting the worst when the police arrive, but we will defend our mosque at all costs."

Yeah, good luck with that, Rachid. (The CRS don't screw around.)

The statement I heard from him on NPR this morning was at least that vague. It doesn't strain my credulity to imagine Obama making equally hopenchangey noises in meetings with the two parties.

Don't know, my uneducated guess is it is standard and would be so included. But the flip side is that including this nonsense can destroy what the enviornmental advocate is trying to accomplish. If I was drafting that HOV suit, assuming I even thought of the racial tip, the first thing that would occur to me upon considering including it, is it's going to attract a whole lot of hostility and opposition from those not otherwise engaged on the issue.

I'm listening to Obama's speech to the General Assembly (that body of confirmed antisemites). Good Grief. Obama is receiving applause for statements which appear to advocate the segregationist policies of Arab antisemites. And, then, speaks as if the only "problem" with the Arabs is "incitement" or harsh rhetoric. And, if the Arabs were to stop "vitriolic attacks" then all would be Rainbows and Roses in the Middle East. This is then followed by Obama stating, "I am not naive." As I'm rolling on the floor in laughter. Good Grief...

SNIP

I think I'm gonna' hurl. What else is gonna' be racialized?!

Mandy, not HOV, HOT lanes. They allow you to commute by yourself in the HOT lanes by paying a extra toll, and it's not cheap. Typically only used by the real "time is money" professionals since you can spend over $100/month for the commute.

"Tolls for the HOT lanes will change according to traffic conditions to regulate demand for the lanes and keep them congestion free - even during peak hours. When traffic increases, tolls will go up. When traffic decreases, tolls will go down.

Fully electronic tolling on the HOT lanes will allow customers to pay tolls with E-ZPass - eliminating the need for toll booths. Electronic signs will display toll rates to help drivers decide whether to use HOT lanes. Drivers will lock in their toll rate when they enter the HOT lanes."

Obama's "speech" was most notable by what words were not "mentioned" -- such as Islamic terrorism...that phrase is now, what?, taboo? Instead Obama kept (like I've heard up here in Canada, for the gazillionth time CAN- CAIR and others claim that "terrorism" includes anything involving a nation attempting to defend itself against terrorist attacks -- hence, Americans who go into Afghanistan are "terrorists", etc.) and Obama appears to be adopting this strategy -- or suggesting obliquely (not, of course, coming out in a straightforward way and stating it, but, of course, suggesting) that "security" (that's the new "buzz word" for "terrorism"?) is to be striven for by both parties -- as if Israelis pose as grave a threat of "terrorism" or launch terrorist attacks which threaten the peace, as do Arabs. It's the new wrinkle on equivocation of terms. And, I';m sure that's why Obama receives such applause from the antisemites.

Don't recall that, but remember a skit about bathing in the toilet (perhaps they did not have a tub), brother Russel went in first (to warm the water) and Bill is heard saying "I wonder where Russel would go if..." then you hear the toilet flush.

Something else a bit more recent is Willie P. Richardson, the phone prankster. He used to have bits on a radio show and I ended up buying a few Cd's cause he was hilarious, nothing cruel or dirty, just funny and perhaps mischievous.

Looks like the legislation to defund Acorn may have unintended consequences:

The congressional legislation intended to defund ACORN, passed with broad bipartisan support, is written so broadly that it applies to "any organization" that has been charged with breaking federal or state election laws, lobbying disclosure laws, campaign finance laws or filing fraudulent paperwork with any federal or state agency. It also applies to any of the employees, contractors or other folks affiliated with a group charged with any of those things.

...

Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) picked up on the legislative overreach and asked the Project on Government Oversight (POGO) to sift through its database to find which contractors might be caught in the ACORN net.

Lockheed Martin and Northrop Gumman both popped up quickly, with 20 fraud cases between them, and the longer list is a Who's Who of weapons manufacturers and defense contractors.

Patrick Gaspard was the Executive Vice President for the SEIU until Barack Obama asked Gaspard to become his Presidential Campaign’s National Political Director. Once in the White House, Gaspard became Barack Obama’s Director of the Office of Political Affairs. re: #517 Occasional Reader

Why do you think they are bad planning/engineering?

Well, if done right, spearated from the rest of the traffic in their own carriageway, they work well. If they merely take away a lane from a freeway or tollway, they can often cause congestion in the remaining lanes. It also varies by metro area. They work very well in some metro areas, and very poorly in others. This dependent on commuting patterns.

I say they result from bad planning and engineering because they come from a lack of puting jobs and residences near each other, a lack of the density necessary for public transportation (light rail, rapid transit, or heavy commuter rail), and a lack of foresight in planinng and then engineering the transportation (roads, rail) for an area.

In many ways, it would be better to add trains to the rapid transit and heavy commuter rail systems, and extend such systems rather than add HOT ro HOV lanes if one is truly serious about reducing emissions and getting cars off the roads.

Ah, Capitalism!
That's an easy revenue generator for the park, but not for roads. The cost of building the extra lanes will take a long time to recoup, if at all.
Toll roads are becoming more popular and have a chance to ultimately pay for themselves, but toll lanes have slight usage in regard to their initial cost and continuing maintenance

Ewww...definitely not!

There is a standard in American politics whether upon meeting the President on the street or in some theoretical manner, you would have him over for dinner. The concept originated in the "hate Nixon" days where many pointed to a cliff that we all jumped off in that nobody would be willing to have him over. Me? Depends on what an "airport shuttle driver" is. My first thought is someone who works for a private firm that picks you up at your house and drops you off at the airport, or vice-versa - a sort of specialized cab service that I use whenever I travel, to avoid dealing with airport parking and it's fees. In this case, he doesn't work for the airport or the airlines at all.

There could be other jobs with a similar title involving people who do work for the airport. Whether they're screened or not would depend on what they do and what they have access to.

Agreed. The toll lanes, IMHO, are a silly idea, and don't really do much for reducing either congestion or emissions. I do, however, like toll roads, and would prefer tolling the entire Interstate System to using a GPS based system for calculating how much one owes for using the road. Yes, that is allowed after Noah, and the laws for non-Jews are named "Noahide" because Noah, a righteous Gentile, obeyed them.

Although until the Jews entered Israel, meat was only to be eaten as part of a sacrifice, in which some of the animal was burned to G-d, and some eaten.

Interesting question as to whether a cutoff of funding to a particular organization would be a Bill of Attainder or not. For instance, if I'm not mistaken, as an administrative matter, federal contracting maintains "blacklists" of companies that have engaged in corrupt practices; I'm not aware that this has ever been challenged on those grounds.

Obama's approval ratings are sky high...at the UN
The UN loves Barack Obama because he is weak

It is not hard to see why a standing ovation awaits the president at Turtle Bay. Obama’s popularity at the UN boils down essentially to his willingness to downplay American global power. He is the first American president who has made an art form out of apologizing for the United States, which he has done on numerous occasions on foreign soil, from Strasbourg to Cairo. The Obama mantra appears to be – ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do to atone for your country. This is a message that goes down very well in a world that is still seething with anti-Americanism.

(Also, I think they've been generally beaten back from trying to issue speeding tickets based on EZPass, due to pure public outrage.)

I have EZ Pass (actually, I Pass, but the two are 100% compatible) here, and the Tollway has stated many times that will not track speed using them. They know (as do most toll facilities) they'd have a huge backlash if they did that as they finally got 80% of their users to install an I Pass.

The only time I know of, and verifiably know of, that a toll facility used such a thing to track speed was years ago on the NYS Thruway, and that used a ticket toll system, not an EZ Pass.

That makes sense.
That must be why they ignore the hell outta me.

They had a bonus drawing last weekend, and a gal standing near me won 50K. She was excited because they wanted to give her a suite for a week with a free food and beverage comp. I told her to get the check and go home, not sure what she did.
The great thing for a medium sized player like me that plays weekly, is I get the same big suite a occasional high roller gets.

I wish it was 2010 now.
Dems Should Focus On The Color Purple
BLUE-STATE DEMOCRATS ARE SHOWING LITTLE AWARENESS THAT THEIR PARTY HAS A PROBLEM.

I am becoming convinced, based on this and other research, that although many independent voters are disappointed in specific things that Obama has done, they still hope that he will do well and believe that he might. To be sure, red America has already given Obama the thumbs down. And blue America just wishes he would be more liberal. But it's purple America, the independents who voted for Democrats in the 2006 midterm election by an 18-point margin, that makes the biggest difference right now. Most House Democrats live in blue America and show little awareness that their party has a problem. However, the Democrats' majority is built on a layer of 54 seats that the party picked up in 2006 and 2008 that are largely in purple -- or even red -- America. Democrats ought to keep in mind that 84 of their current House members represent districts won by President Bush in 2004 or John McCain in 2008.

A whopping 48 of those Democrats -- eight more than the size of their party's majority -- are from districts that voted for both Bush and McCain. That America is very different from the Democratic base in blue America, and it sees many major issues very differently.

The UN loves Barack Obama because he is weak

From some radio "reviews" of his AGW speech at the UN that I have heard this morning, he's pissing off his "base" because he didn't go far enough with the rhetoric of saving the earth.

Can ACORN be defunded because it has acted in a partisan manner? Lose charitable organization/tax exempte status?

Less likely on the partisan side, after all focus on the family has a partisan bent as well and is tax exempt, ACORN could run into trouble in other areas though. caveat, IANAL and really at this point we're getting deep into the weeds, because the question then becomes, 'has ACORN shown a systematic willingness to engage in illegal activities.' and then a court would have to determine if that exists. Having lower level employees engaging in illegal behavior may not be enough to trigger that clause. If any evidence can be traced up the chain though...

My Ferragamos are so long I could practically ski w/'em, but they are exquisite- same is true for other high- end equipment.

One thing I've given up on entirely are dress shoes with leather soles. No matter how high-quality they are, they wear out in no time. (Plus, they're slippery... re: #638 Occasional Reader

It's a good point, but I think administrative blacklists avoid the bill of attainder issue by being something that is informal and not being passed as a law. IE, we're not going to do business with you cause we don't like you. Congress passing a bill saying, 'ACORN is a corrupt and illegal organization and we're not going to do business with them because of that' is another.

(and I know the bill doesn't say that specifically, which is why you could see a LOT of companies getting hit by the bill as written)

Who did they "steal" it from? From "Palestinians"? And how exactly did "Palestinians" come to be the lawful owners of all the land the settlements are built on (which was almost entirely undeveloped). The only way the "Palestinians" could be "owners" of the land they claim is they stole it from somebody else.

Waving keys does not prove ownership.

The "Royal Kingdom of Jordan" and the "Royal Kingdom of Saudi Arabia" is on land that the British stole from the Ottomans.

Of course, the Ottomans also grabbed it from earlier owners...

Here's a man who should be looked into feared because he's actually in a political position to make a difference - and not a good one at that.

FCC's Diversity Czar: White people need to be forced to step down so someone else can have the power.

"It should be clear by now that my focus here is not freedom of speech or the press. This freedom is all too often an exaggeration. At the very least, blind references to freedom of speech or the press serve as a distraction from the critical examination of other communications policies.

"[T]he purpose of free speech is warped to protect global corporations and block rules that would promote democratic governance."

And Lloyd's rather disturbing perspective on Venezuelan Communist dictator Hugo Chavez's "incredible...democratic revolution." To go with Lloyd's bizarre admiration for the thuggishly fascistic manner in which "Chavez began to take very seriously the media in his country."

Yet another Obama appointee with radical and extreme political views NOT in line with our Constitution. Obama's world if full of these people.

1. This has been known to occur only once, with a toll ticket (pre-EZ Pass) on the NYS Thruway. The tickets are time and date stamped (PA Tpk, NYS Thruway, Indiana Toll Rd, Ohio Tpk, etc still use toll tickets for non-EZ Pass transactions, and they are time and date stamped).
2. Toll agencies won't track your speed using one because they know they'd face a huge backlash if they did so.

No need for a brick, Just throw tomatoes.

I like those giant people movers they have. I feel like I'm in the jawas' transport whenever I ride one.

THey're a dying species. A new people mover system is being put in place to replace the one they put in place ten years ago...

The Polynesians pulled off a migration on boats. It's doable.

There's now some evidence to support theories that the Clovis people did the same thing, coming from Europe.

re: #712 Occasional Reader

A couple of months ago I was driving back from NY. Got in the EZPass toll at some point on I-95. Guy in front of me doesn't budge. I wait... then hit the horn. Nothing. They guy gets out and walks toward my car. (I'm surreptitiously reaching for the Special Surprise I have within reach for roadside bad juju.) "I don't have EZPass, and got in this lane by mistake... could you back up?" Heavy traffic behind me, cars already piling up. Me: No way. It's dangerous and illegal. Him: [thinks a moment, then gets the bright-idea look on his face] "Then could I just borrow YOUR EZPass?!"

If he drives through, he has to pay the toll, plus a $25 fine. I know because my transponder died and I got a bill for $300 in fines that I had to straighten out.
Good grief. Some people.

And that's exactly what I told him. It's twenty-five frickkin' bucks, as opposed to me risking my life and/or a reckless driving ticket for backing up on a busy interstate highway. I vote for YOU paying the twenty-five bucks for your stupidity.

Nation of Islam is also listed.

So are the Panthers, and Voz de Aztlan, and a whole list of black separatist groups. Contrary to popular belief, the SPLC does not ignore hate groups that aren't white.

But aren't certain insects kosher (at least for Sephardim?)

I'd add that even with that, the Gagh would have to be prepared under supervision. Do you think most Klingon Warbirds have rabbyim onboard?

Just locusts, and then only if you have a received tradition on which type. Makes sense. If you have locusts, you're gonna need food.

One thing I've given up on entirely are dress shoes with leather soles. No matter how high-quality they are, they wear out in no time. (Plus, they're slippery... I fractured a finger by slipping and falling in a, er, street altercation on a rainy night in NYC, while wearing brand-new leather-soled shoes.) Rubber soles. I think for my next dress shoes, I'm gonna bite the bullet and drop the bucks for Mephisto; they're incredibly comfortable.

I have Mephisto sandals. Very comfortable, but they get pretty gamy. Dress shoes should be ok (I hope)

Can Jews wear python boots?

Sure. Non-food animals can be worn as clothing. Minks and fox are trayf, but fur coats are OK.

I have a pair of Mephisto casual shoes, and a pair of slip-ons. They're great... very comfortable, wear well. Both of them I bought HEAVILY on sale... for the full dress shoes, I have yet to see them on sale, and they run about $400. Oh well...

Yes, even on Yom Kippur. We just can't eat them.

Of coure, there's a minhag not to wear leather shoes on Yom Kippur.

As noted, I believe that applies to leather from cows, not other animals like snakes.
