Victor Davis Hanson Takes the High Road
From PJ Media

Little Green What?

Some bloggers sent me postings the other day about Charles Johnson’s Little Green Footballs website, and suggested that the site has changed—as in flipped sides. I have not followed the controversy, but I once rode a bike down in LA for an afternoon with Johnson and found him both a serious and bright guy with all sorts of original ideas about radical Islam and the anti-Enlightenment dangers it posed.

Out of curiosity I went to the site today. All I discovered different was a change in emphasis, but not necessarily attitude. He still is strongly anti-jihad; the difference is that he now worries just as much about creationism, paleo-right tribalism, and the white supremacists’ piggy-banking onto efforts to stop radical Islam. Those are legitimate worries for any liberal (as in 19th-century liberal) minded. Almost monthly I am smeared by the far far right for defending the Anglo-American effort in World War II or support for the melting-pot traditional of racial integration and intermarriage. So I understand some of his concerns.

Johnson, it should be remembered, did a masterful job of debunking the Rather nonsense, and in the dark days of 2001-2 of identifying the idiot fringe that appeased radical Islam. He was also always attuned to the anti-Semitic elements on both left and right that sought to blame Israel for our challenges in Iraq and elsewhere.

Sorry to those who wrote me, but I can no more get on the anti-Johnson bandwagon than I could the birth certificate allegations about Obama (why he won’t release his college transcripts is a far more interesting and valid inquiry).

Life is a beach.

And, then you marry a son of one.

44 medaura18586  Wed, Sep 23, 2009 6:47:28pm

An addendum to my piece:

UPDATE: Over at “The Other McCain,” Stacy is already reacting by, you guessed it, weaseling his way around my arguments. He pretends to respond by quoting a sentence of mine—cherry-picked for its relative irrelevance to the charges against him:

White nationalist Robert Stacy McCain now prominently blogrolls lgf2, a hate site run by a couple of dangerous whacks prone to physical violence—and encourages its commenters to congregate at Hot Air.

Then he proceeds to “debunk” it by informing me that “there are these things called facts,… and there are witnesses to those facts.” These “facts” Stacy links to and their respective “witnesses” are nothing but photos of his son with his football teammates, of whom some are black and one is Asian. So his offspring has been caught on camera looking friendly among blacks, in front of witnesses. Stacy, you’ve humored me. If this is the best you can muster in your defense, I rest my case. The idea of having blacks for in-laws still repulses you. But to your credit, you have established that not only you don’t mind transacting business with a black bank clerk, but you will even tolerate your son playing with black kids. You are much more open-minded than I had realized and I am not above admitting it.

From another update:

Now we see where Kejda Gjermani is getting her misinformation. A commenter identifies her husband as software entrepreneur Michael P. Hussey…[so MPH was not an anonymous a—hole after all—ed.] Apparently “mph” encountered Richard Spencer—perhaps at a libertarian event? some sort of Paulista gathering?—in New York, where they both live, and words were exchanged…. Alas, “mph” has made serious mistakes by recycling materials of dubious credibility, and—if it is true that “mph” is Hussey—he has committed an even more serious error by involving Gjermani in what appears to be some sort of personal feud with Spencer.

Leaving aside the misogynistic presumption that it must have been my husband who fed me “misinformation” or “involved” me in anything, I must correct Stacy’s allegation that it was at a libertarian event or “Paulista gathering” that my husband and I met Richard Spencer. For someone so ostensibly committed to not jumping to conclusions without knowing “the facts,” Stacy is sure making up a lot of stuff from thin air. For the record, we met Spencer at a debate titled “Is Zionism Racism?” There was a show of hands, and guess which way Richard Spencer voted? To this day, I remain wholly confused as to what his vote revealed about his attitude to Israel, because he seems to consider racism a good thing.

To top it off, Stacy taunts us:

Pay close attention, idiots: Just because I haven’t bothered to deny something doesn’t mean it’s true. The burden of proof is on the accuser, and good luck proving some of the things you have so flatly asserted. There are facts. And there are witnesses.

He doesn’t bother denying any of the charges against him. But he does bother writing dozens of articles, each over 1,000 words long, to harass whomever brings up unflattering facts from his past. Facts that he doesn’t deny, but pleads with his readers not to believe…. I need some Advil….

I don't know if anybody here has ever been in or listened to a volunteer church choir, but somebody sent me this today and I was very amused by it:

Any similarity to volunteer church choir members living or dead is coincidental. However, if the shoe fits, wear it!

To be sung to "Immortal, Invisible":

Immoral, impossible, God only knows
How tenors and basses, sopranos, altos
At service on Sunday are rarely the same
As those who on Wednesday to choir practice came.

Unready, unable to sight-read the notes
Nor counting, nor blending, they tighten their throats.
The descant so piercing is soaring above
The melody only a mother could love.

They have a director, but no one knows why.
No one in the choir deigns to turn him an eye.
It's clear by his waving, he wants them to look,
But each of them stands with his nose in his book.

Despite their offenses, the music rings out.
The folks in the pews are enraptured, no doubt.
Their faces are blissful, their thoughts are so deep,
But it is no wonder, for they are asleep.

The goal is clear: two states living side by side in peace and security - a Jewish State of Israel, with true security for all Israelis; and a viable, independent Palestinian state with contiguous territory that ends the occupation that began in 1967, and realizes the potential of the Palestinian people.

re: #91 SanFranciscoZionist

The goal is clear: two states living side by side in peace and security - a Jewish State of Israel, with true security for all Israelis; and a viable, independent Palestinian state with contiguous territory that ends the occupation that began in 1967, and realizes the potential of the Palestinian people.

Thank you...I wasn't just imagining it and it wasn't eeevil right-wing radio hosts whispering that in my ear.

Less landmass for the Hamas and Hezbollah shitstains to rain down Katushas onto.

Kudos to VDH. Plus, I love that term, "paleo-right tribalism." Methinks there's a rotating title there...

"Dispersing paleo-right tribalism" or something like that.

re: #44 medaura18586

An addendum to my piece:

UPDATE: Over at “The Other McCain,” Stacy is already reacting by, you guessed it, weaseling his way around my arguments. He pretends to respond by quoting a sentence of mine—cherry-picked for its relative irrelevance to the charges against him:

He doesn’t bother denying any of the charges against him. But he does bother writing dozens of articles, each over 1,000 words long, to harass whomever brings up unflattering facts from his past. Facts that he doesn’t deny, but pleads with his readers not to believe…. I need some Advil….

He should be careful. If his kid plays sports with black kids, he may get invited to their birthday parties. He may meet their sisters. He may bring one of them home to dinner, and introduce her as his fiance, causing his father to suffer a heart attack over the canapes.

We can only hope.

//does that count as wishing harm on someone?

108 Bacchus's daddy  Wed, Sep 23, 2009 7:14:59pm

VDH's piece is very well-written. A change of "emphasis" is a good description, and I think this change has been necessary and superbly executed by LGF. Too many persons who used to be considered "mainstream" right have gotten into bed with the unsavoury and often racist far-right-fringe.

I think that the post-9/11 political climate actually did something of a disservice to Charles and much of the LGF membership, insofar as "we" found common ground with some, who absent the overriding saliency of the conflict with radical Islam, we likely would not have found much common ground. I think Charles and this website have much to gain by the left's realization that we have as little use for racists and overbearing creationists as they do. It's probably too much to hope, that this recognition of common ground would cause lefties to take seriously and re-evaluate their positions on the significant matters on which we differ, but hey, maybe it's a start.

Yow, I missed all that. Who the hell would do that, and why?

Some creep calling itself "A Nonny Moose." I should have never let it go up in the first place because it was a rude comment. But I didn't realize it contained a person's identity at first. That's the who...

As to the why... no other reason than to bully and intimidate. "Shut up or I'll tell everyone who you are." Very sick...

As I was pulling into the parking lot, I blew a seal. Other seals were piering at me.

"blew a seal". That reminds me of the joke about the penguin who sloppily ate an ice cream cone while his tires were being replaced.

Thanks everyone fro the concern shown in a previous thread. Rest assured I'll be fine... in fact, this garbage is reawakening the charging bull in me, which some of you might remember from my more feral earlier days.

These bigots can kiss my Illyrian ass. Some conservative homos will be sorry they ever went after me when I'm done with them.

I applaud the sentiment. Can I assume that you meant homo conservaticus, rather than a slur on their orientation?

It's the very least I could do. If people are doing me the favor of taking time to comment on my site, they should not have to volunteer any more information about themselves than they want to. With so many frothing crazies out there, I almost regret everyone knowing who I am,.. some of these creeps can be violent. So I take privacy issues very seriously.

It's not a slur on their orientation. A self-described "conservative lesbian" has written an insane screed against me, "outing" me as a jihadist troll. Yup... She's also conducted some very deep investigations, at whose conclusion she found the Holy Grail: my username ... which I use everywhere, my site included. Quite some dirt she's dug.

So I meant what I wrote quite literally,.. and not as a slur.
