Glenn Beck Refuses to Define ‘White Culture’

Media • Views: 5,953

One of the statements that has gotten Glenn Beck in trouble was his rant against President Obama on Fox News’ Fox and Friends, in which he said Obama is “a racist” with a “deep-seated hatred for white culture.” In her interview with Beck, Katie Couric read a question from a viewer, asking Beck to explain what he meant by “white culture.”

And the weaseling started.

Youtube Video

UPDATE at 9/24/09 11:07:13 am:

Maybe Glenn Beck should ask these people for help defining “white culture’.” They seem to know exactly what it is.

UPDATE at 9/24/09 11:50:38 am:

Note that Glenn Beck wrote the foreword for the new edition of W. Cleon Skousen’s “The 5,000 Year Leap,” and heavily promotes the book on his show.

Skousen also wrote a book called “The Making of America.” Some quotes from that book:

Toward the end of Reagan’s second term, Skousen became the center of a minor controversy when state legislators in California approved the official use of another of his books, the 1982 history text “The Making of America.” Besides bursting with factual errors, Skousen’s book characterized African-American children as “pickaninnies” and described American slave owners as the “worst victims” of the slavery system. Quoting the historian Fred Albert Shannon, “The Making of America” explained that “[slave] gangs in transit were usually a cheerful lot, though the presence of a number of the more vicious type sometimes made it necessary for them all to go in chains.”

Glenn Beck is the worst kind of bigoted idiot, the cowardly kind. Happy to blather away spewing racist hate, but whenever he gets called out on it, he isn't man enough to own up to it. I'd at least respect the guy for his guts if he was man enough to stand firm behind his remarks.

Instead he is the kind of pussy who will call someone a n***** under their breath, but when they get overheard swear up and down they said no such thing. Man up Beck.

So Glenn Beck thinks President Obama has a deep-seated hatred for some kind of indeterminate thing that he can't or won't define. But he calls it "white culture."

15 Kosh's Shadow  Thu, Sep 24, 2009 10:57:21am

There is, of course, no single "white culture".
But given what some of Beck's friends are like, I think their culture involves white sheets.

26 Sharmuta  Thu, Sep 24, 2009 11:01:16am

Just what did he mean by "white culture"? It's a valid, and straight forward question. If he thinks in retrospect he mis-spoke he could say that, but he doesn't. He had the nerve to say it, but he lacks the nerve to even describe what he meant by it. He clearly thinks this straight forward question from Twitter is a trap being laid out for him by Katie Couric, when in reality, it was a trap he laid for himself.

I never really considered Beck racist until I saw this video. He's certainly said said some questionable things, The Mormon church has had a tough time with race issues, his hero Skousen was certainly questionable. All could be explained away somehow but why can't he answer the question about his own statement? He doesn't claim that he misspoke and he stands by his statement but he won't explain t. It's an easy thing to expand on what he meant to say. I see no other explanaition other than he can't publicly explain himself and still keep his job.

Tear away the style, listen to what he says, check what he says, and Glen Beck's positions evaporate into smoke. All he could do is blame her for the question, while hiding behind his "asking questions" defense himself.

Katie asked a good question. If you can't stand on your own words, perhaps you need to use different rhetoric.

Not really. The ranks of people nationwide who don't read newspapers anymore is swelling on a daily basis, thus the talk of a government bailout for the government's biggest supporter.

Not reading newspapers, particularly when there are so many other sources of information (many of which are better) is not in any way analogous to being a racist. It's not reprehensible, does not carry a stigma in decent society, and is not a status carried by the majority of the populace.

The strange thing about Beck is that his waffling will make him more popular with his core audience. They like his style for some strange reason. As far as facts, he tells them what they "know" to be true already (i.e what they want to hear).

And if you ever suffer through his show you see his particular brand of coy wink & nod inuendo-laden style which is devoid of substance, because in the end all he is really doing is asking his audience to "ask the question."

And what could white possibly culture mean?

Are not the Russians and the Irish white folks along with Bosnian Muslims?

Are these people all part of the same culture?

It seems to me that culturally there are really big differences between those groups. Come to think of it English and Greeks seem to have very different cultures too.

Is the "culture" in small town Iowa like that the same as in Boston?

It seems to me that white folks come in a lot of different varieties from a lot of different cultures.

They even look different... I know it is considered racist to point these things out, but Italians don't usually look like Swedes - and they have vastly different cultures too...

BTW the Italians have better food too.

My point being that this is as stupid a term as it could possibly get. There is no way it could be defined sensibly even in principle.

Ohhh and most Jews are white too, but we came from the mid east... and our food is better than Swedish food too... Though the Swedes have us beat on the gorgeous tall blonde factor...

We all know that this is only code words for White Christians like us who hate everyone else. Even Beck knew that. That's why he said it.

re: #98 Lee Coller

I wouldn't. The answer's simple -- there is no such thing.

I would say that there probably was a distinctive "white culture" years ago when Caucasians dominated all facets of society. But, since this is a country of immigrants from all over the place, that culture was never totally "white". What has developed since the first European settlers arrived here is a distinctive American Culture and the interaction between the races and classes was more restrictive that today. But, that was certainly not exclusively "white". What is "white" anyway? My ancestors came from many different places at different times. Are the my German ancestors that arrived here in the early 1800's the same as the Norweigen ones that came in the early 1900's? Or, my Irish ancestors that came over in the 1860's the same as the Scot/French ones that immigrated from Canada in the 1900's?

And, now my kids are 1/2 filipino...THAT is American Culture. A giant tasty pot of jambalaya...with each group contributing to the flavor.

Are there subsets? Of course. There is a distinctive "American Black" culture, just as there is a "American Mexican" culture, an "American Chinese", etc...I don't think there was ever a subset that was "white"...there are too many different groups in that broad group...

To which a certain "Steve" replies: "I’m afaid [sic] that the pro-Zionists are only on the Zionists [sic] side, and regard most of Europe and America as being riddled with neo-Nazis. The enemy for them is always and will always be white Europeans on whatever continent."

Fresh from the "Protocols". And this is allowed to stand on a "conservative" website that at the same time defends Geller and Spencer's "brave handful of anti-jihadists".

Aww, heck. I'm posting the link. It deserves mega-mockery. There's a tip jar: "If you enjoy my blog, please buy me a cafe latte for $2.95, or cafe latte and a sandwich for $7.95, or add a salad for $11.95! May you be rewarded 10-fold for your kind gift by the prospering power of the universe!"

3. You could have hung with them if you betrayed every principle you believe in.

Note that Glenn Beck wrote the foreword for the new edition of Cleon Skousen's "The 5,000 Year Leap," and heavily promotes the book on his show.

Skousen also wrote a book called "The Making of America." Some quotes from that book:

Toward the end of Reagan's second term, Skousen became the center of a minor controversy when state legislators in California approved the official use of another of his books, the 1982 history text "The Making of America." Besides bursting with factual errors, Skousen's book characterized African-American children as "pickaninnies" and described American slave owners as the "worst victims" of the slavery system. Quoting the historian Fred Albert Shannon, "The Making of America" explained that "[slave] gangs in transit were usually a cheerful lot, though the presence of a number of the more vicious type sometimes made it necessary for them all to go in chains."

Skousen also wrote a book called "The Making of America." Some quotes from that book:

Pickaninny

Pickaninny (also picaninny or piccaninny) is an offensive derogatory term in English that refers to black children or a racist caricature thereof. It is a pidgin word form, which may be derived from the Portuguese pequenino (an affectionate term derived from pequeno ("little").

In the Southern United States, pickaninny was long used to refer to the children of African slaves or (later) of African American citizens. While this use of the term was popularized in reference to the character of Topsy in the 1852 book Uncle Tom's Cabin, the term was used as early as 1831 in an anti-slavery tract "The History of Mary Prince, a West Indian Slave, related by herself" published in Edinburgh, Scotland. The term was still in some popular use in the US as late as the 1960s; while it has largely fallen out of use and is now considered offensive, the term is still part of the American lexicon.

Although the term was used generally, it came to refer to the associated stereotype of African American children. "Picaninnies had bulging eyes, unkempt hair, red lips and wide mouths into which they stuffed huge slices of watermelon." The Picaninny was distinguished by its young age, male or female.

Toward the end of Reagan's second term, Skousen became the center of a minor controversy when state legislators in California approved the official use of another of his books, the 1982 history text "The Making of America."

WTF? There are only two possibilities here. One, that these legislators were unaware of what was in that book, which would make them (like our congress with respect to the house bill) incompetent. Two, that these legislators were aware of what was in that book, which would make them complicit in out and out racism.

Neither possibility is defensible.

I am often glad I’m not an intellectual. I don’t really care why C. Johnson is attacking my friends, I only care that he is. Attack my friend? I reach for the (metaphorical) shotgun, drape the ammo belt ‘cross the other shoulder, strap on my gunbelt and stand with my friends.

It doesn’t matter if I disagree with my friends on minor details, we’re in this fight together. So I disagree with Stacy on this, or with you with that. That’s not what is important, what is important is that I stand with my “family” when they’re under attack. Perhaps that family is by blood or marriage. Perhaps that family is political., someone I may never meet in person. Doesn’t matter. I defend my “family” because that’s what we do. It’s why my (metaphorical) brothers and sisters lined up for blocks outside the recruiting stations on Dec. 8, 1941. It’s why we lined up at the blood banks on 9/11/01.

So, F@#%$ Charles Johnson and his pal Kejda. And the horse they rode in on. And the dog that ran ahead. and the turtle that followed behind.

The thing that turns me off about Beck is his complete inability to listen to his critics. Not that there's anything wrong with defending yourself, of course, but it wouldn't hurt to listen to a critic or two and say, you know, that person may be right about me. Instead, no matter the criticism, he defends himself and takes the complete opposite stance of the critic which forces him to defend stuff he may not even believe. It just leaves him looking immature and not very well-reasoned.

Calls to Mr. Skousen were referred to Bryan Neville, the manager of customer relations for the center's office in Salt Lake City. Mr. Neville called criticism of the book ''ludicrous'' and said the use of the word ''pickaninnies'' was not ''a racial aspersion'' but was ''a term of affection used by blacks themselves.''

Did he? Good move. I think it's pretty clear why Beck didn't want to answer the question. He's afraid to broadcast his innermost racist thoughts. If he implied that Obama "hates white culture" then he is implying that Obama "loves black culture to the detriment and over that of white culture." He's doing several things at once there. As you indicated, Beck could find the answer to his liking at Stormfront.

Every time this man opens his mouth he keeps digging deeper into his hole. I cannot fathom how there can even be 1% of Americans that admire this morally defunct man. The idea that he is admired is rather disturbing.

Actually, that site does use the phrase "white culture" a lot - of course, not in a grotesque Stormfront sort of way, just the more standard jaded, snarky hipster way. In fact, if you google "white culture" that is the first website that pops up (followed by the supremacists). It's been observed a zillion times before, but it's still interesting how every other ethnic group gets to define its own culture with pride and respect, and white folks get to choose between skinheads and sarcastic reverse racists. Yay.

I've never heard of a 'white culture'. I may be wrong, but I've always thought of 'cultural' differences as regional or ethnic based, not race based. Some of the differences I would look at are food, music, dress, architecture, folk lore/mythology,etc. (like going to Epcot Center and visiting the world showcase, each section unique in its own way.

Heck, you can find white and non white folks from around the USA that are different just because of the region they live in.

Fast paced city dwellers..
Laid back beachside folks..
mountain loving..
water loving..
Sun worshippers...
Snow players..
etc.

Read Richard Feynman's tale of horror regarding his stint as a textbook reviewer for California's public schools. It is entirely possible that no one ever read the thing in the first place. It's so common, in fact, that publishers often send "books" out with covers wrapped around empty pages for review.

Seriously.

Warning: Feynman was a huge genius, and his accounts of his life are always entertaining. This one is no exception. But it is also one of the most stomach-churning indictments of the public school system you will ever run across, and may very well induce vomiting. You've been warned.

I don't mean to suggest that I know what Glenn Beck meant by "white culture." His failure to answer Kaite Couric's question is disturbing.

However, Wikipedia has a definition of "White American culture" that seems fair. It states "the largest proportion of American culture. From their earliest presence in North America, White Americans have contributed literature, art, agricultural skills, foods, clothing styles, music, and language to American culture."

But when I read this, I wonder whether Barack Obama really has a deep-seated hatred of white Americans' "literature, art, agricultural skills, foods, clothing styles, music, and language." I would say he has shown some appreciation of most of those things.

I'm guessing it's either a sports metaphor (i.e, you're pulled off the playing field, hit the showers), or... it means "showers" in the Auschwitz sense of the word?

Yes, that's where I'm at with it. I really hope it's the sports metaphor but sinisterly worry that it may be the latter.

287 Kosh's Shadow  Thu, Sep 24, 2009 12:19:07pm

Netanyahu's speech transcript still isn't up, but there are excerpts in this Jerusalem Post article.
Here are some excerpts I found particularly good (although I could have quoted the entire article):

"In the past 30 years, this fanaticism spread across the globe with a murderous violence that knows no bounds," he said, noting that Islamic terrorism hurt Muslims, Christian and Hindus as well as Jews.

"Wherever they can," the prime minister said of Islamic fanatics, "they enforce a backward system of government." He called the struggle between the modern world and extremist Islamism a struggle between "the 21st Century and the 9th Century."

"Not one UN resolution was passed condemning Hamas rocket attacks on Israel," Netanyahu said, "We heard nothing, absolutely nothing from the UN Human Rights Council."

Netanyahu went on to describe the disengagement from the Gaza Strip, telling the UN General Assembly that "Israel unilaterally withdrew from every inch of Gaza, uprooting over 8,000 Israelis from their homes… because many in Israel believed that this would get peace."

But Israel didn't get peace, Netanyahu said, "Instead we got an Iranian-backed terror base 50 miles from Tel Aviv, and life in the Israeli towns and cities near Gaza became nothing less than a nightmare. Hamas attacks increased ten-fold after we withdrew, and again, the UN was silent, absolutely silent."

The prime minister told the assembly that "after 8 years of unremitting assault Israel was forced to respond," and said the only other example in history was the German bombing of British cities in WWII, to which the allies responded by leveling German cities, causing hundreds of thousands of casualties.

"I'm not passing judgment," Netanyahu stressed, "I'm stating a fact that is the product of decisions of just and great leaders fighting an evil enemy," he said.

"Faced with an enemy committing double war crimes - firing at civilians while hiding behind civilians - Israel sought to carry out surgical attacks on terrorists, not an easy task when fighting squads in a densely populated area," he said.

"Israel tried to minimize civilian casualties…We dropped countless flyers over Gazans' homes, sent text messages to Palestinian residents, made cellular phone calls urging them to vacate, to leave," the prime minister said, stating that "never has a country gone to such length to remove the enemy's civilian population away from harm's way."

Netanyahu went on to slam the Goldstone report, saying that "the UN Human Rights Council decided to condemn Israel, we were morally hanged, given an unfair trial to boot… What a perversion of truth and justice."

The prime minister said that "If the report is not rejected, the UN will go into a process of vitiating itself from relevance," adding that by accepting the report "the world will be sending a message to terrorists that terrorism pays - you will win immunity of you launch your attacks from densely populated areas."

The prime minister stressed that "All of Israel wants peace," noting that Israel made peace with Egypt and Jordan, and vowing that "If the Palestinians truly want peace, we will make peace. But we want a defensible peace, permanent peace."

"We ask the Palestinians to say yes to a Jewish state, as simple, as clear, as elementary as that. We are not foreign conquerors in the land of Israel. We are not strangers to this land - this is our homeland, but as deeply connected as we are to this place, we recognize that the Palestinians also live here and they want a home, we want to live side by side in peace, prosperity and dignity."

Apparently the system was because the Soviets (and now Russians) were more concerned that their own military personnel would launch the missiles based on bogus information coming in, so they wanted to reduce the possibility of a mistaken launch.

In other words, they didn't trust all their other technologies, and the command chain, so they created a system that put in place a way to tell whether to launch its missiles or not - if certain conditions were met, they'd fire. A series of if/then arguments.

And all done in secret so that few people knew inside the Soviet Union, and no one here in the States. Not a good way to game theory nuclear armageddon.

I would place it as more 'conservative' than 'right'.

I am defining conservative thusly, "Having an objective measuring stick and applying it to all sides". If that can be called 'conservative'...maybe 'intellectually honest' would be more fitting.

Anglo-Saxon gold hoard is the biggest - and could get bigger

Without question this is the largest group of gold artefacts ever found in British soil. Many of the pieces are of the highest quality design and technique, from a time that excelled in the creation of fine jewellery and weaponry. There really is nothing like it, but it reminds me of a prehistoric find made near Salisbury in the 1980s.

Here, too, archaeologists were staggered by the sheer scale: there were more than 500 bronze items, including curious miniature shields. But that hoard was illegally excavated and sold, and we will never fully understand it. By contrast, thanks to Herbert's professional skills and attitude, we know everything we could about the Staffordshire gold's context. That adds immensely to its academic value.

We don't yet know how big it is. The present list runs to 1,345 objects, including 56 lumps of earth. X-rays show them to be studded with pieces of metal. You can make out tiny decorative animals and jewel settings, but until the lumps are taken apart we will not know what's there. In other words, archaeologists have the prospect of themselves being able to excavate part of the country's most spectacular ancient hoard.

Is the Large Hadron Collider worth its massive price tag?

The Large Hadron Collider might well be the last machine of its kind that ever gets built. But the fact that it was built is extremely heartening. This is a machine so large it takes hours to jog around. It cost billions of euros and took many years to build. That governments were willing to pay for it, with no idea what it might or might not find, speaks volumes about the price society is willing to pay to understand more about our place in the universe.

But what is the point of having such a device if no one knows you have it, eh?

Why didn't you tell the world?

_Dr. Strangelove

Perhaps more interesting
1) the doomsday device is still operational
2) it was designed to keep their own leaders for launching a nuclear strike

In other words, the Soviets were so paranoid in the 80's that they were afraid that with the 'Star Wars' Missile defense and the incredibly accurate missiles the US had, that it made no sense to create a missile shield that could only stop a few dozen missles if you aren't planning on launching a counterforce strike to take out most of the Soviet missiles first.

Effectively, it prevented a nuclear war because the Soviet leaders could wait to see if there was a false alarm or something else going on rather than a US nuclear assault.

It's a fascinating read.

Just remember, the Russians still have it active.

[The history and definition of the word "Pickaninny"]

I remember being in 4th grade or so and finding a copy of one of P.L. Travers' original Mary Poppins books, after having fallen crazy-mad in love with the Disney movie. Anyway, there was a chapter in which Mary and the kids encounter a bunch of African kids -- I don't remember the exact context at all, though I assume there was some sort of magical travel involved.

But what I do remember is that my young jaw just dropped when the narrator (Travers) described the children as "pickaninnies" (instead of calling them "black children" or something like that). I have no idea where I'd originally encountered the word -- it certainly wouldn't have been from the adults I knew, but I was always a very advanced reader, so I could've seen it previously in any number of books, or heard it in an old movie, and then looked it up.

But anyway, somehow or other I already clearly understood the word to be an inappropriate term that should only ever be used with quote marks around it (if at all), so to see it dropped casually in a MARY POPPINS BOOK!! just completely stunned me. And probably played a role in souring me on the Travers books, though I was already kinda disliking what a complete bitch Mary was compared to the strict but warm Julie Andrews version.

(Then there was the time, at about the same age, when I found an original British edition of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory after having first read the American edition. In the earliest British edition, the Oompa-Loompas were described in the text and portrayed in the illustrations as, essentially, adult pickaninnies -- Charlie or one of the other children on the tour even wonders if Wonka had carved the Oompa-Loompas out of chocolate, because of their extremely dark skin! But in the U.S. edition, and subsequent British editions, the OLs were revised to look like Malibu surfer dudes -- albeit only 2 feet tall -- with wavy, sun-bleached blond hair and deep tans.)

Agggh, crazy Brits!

re: #205 Diamond Bullet

Actually, that site does use the phrase "white culture" a lot - of course, not in a grotesque Stormfront sort of way, just the more standard jaded, snarky hipster way. In fact, if you google "white culture" that is the first website that pops up (followed by the supremacists). It's been observed a zillion times before, but it's still interesting how every other ethnic group gets to define its own culture with pride and respect, and white folks get to choose between skinheads and sarcastic reverse racists. Yay.

Not true. "White folks" have actual ethnic cultures, which we celebrate with pride. Myself, I celebrate being Jewish, Irish, Scots and English. I have friends who celebrate being Italian, Swedish, German, Southern (a complex blend), and all kinds of other things.

But when you say 'white', you don't mean culture, you mean color.

489 mccainiac503  Fri, Sep 25, 2009 9:02:27am

Charles, I don't get your assault on Glenn Beck. I really don't. I've read Beck's "Common Sense" and I've read "The 5000 Year Leap" and found them both to be very good studies in the ideas the founding fathers debated and not remotely racist. Sorry, I don't see it. You'd have me believing he's David Duke and his books are the equivalent of the "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion". Beck is really enemy #1? Seriously? Is Glenn Beck building nuclear weapons and publicly stating he wants to eliminate Israel?

Further, I will grant you that Beck does a poor job of acquitting himself in the Couric interview. What he should have said was, "I made a poor choice of words -- but I stand by my original point... just what did Obama mean when he said he white grandmother was TYPICAL? Why didn't the media ask him to explain his characterization of his grandmother as typical? Why didn't the media hammer him more when he characterized some Americans as clinging to religion and guns?"

I know that Charles probably agrees that Obama's grandmother was a typical white person and that many Americans are bitter gun and Bible clingers. But I for one agree with Glenn Beck that I'm troubled when the President of the United States makes such comments and reveals himself to be a man with a chip on his shoulder and an axe to grind. If anything, Obama should be telling the story of how his birth parents all but abandoned him and his typical white grandparents saw to it that he got the best education you can buy in Honolulu. Just as Obama is footing a very large tuition bill so that Sasha and Malia can attend the best elite secondary schools in the DC area.

But I guess I'm just a racist and I need a pious person like Charles to help me see the light. Thank you Charles for exposing all the closet racists in our society. Mr. Dees and the Southern Poverty Law Center should put you on the payroll. Meanwhile, the Middle East will explode in a giant mushroom cloud.

You know, come to think of it, our nation looked past segregation and racism and united as one to focus on the much bigger enemy during World War II. No doubt, we'll have to focus on the real threats in the world again very soon and stop all this BS back and forth about who's a racist and who's not. Ahmedinenutjob hates us all: blacks, whites, Jews, Christians, straight or gay, purple, yellow, red... whatever you are they hate us all.

490 mccainiac503  Fri, Sep 25, 2009 9:14:04am

As to W. Cleon Skousen, if we were to discount all ideas of people who espoused racist ideas at one time or another in their lives, then I supposed any of you who are Lutherans are also racist because Martin Luther was a rabid anti-Semite. The list of people who could be labeled as racist is very long indeed if that's how you want to play the game.

If you're a Jew or support the state of Israel, Jimmy Carter has essentially labeled you a racist for supporting apartheid in Palestine.

Indeed, I would say that this game the left (and Charles) plays of trying to smear everyone as a racist is just as stupid as the game the right plays in trying to smear everyone (mostly Obama) as a socialist or Communist by using guilt by association. It smacks of desperation and only makes the accuser look like someone lacking persuasive enough arguments for their own ideas and beliefs.
