Origin of Species - The Creationist Version

Science • Views: 7,467

Former teen idol Kirk Cameron and his idiot creationist pal Ray Comfort are distributing a new edition of Charles Darwin’s “The Origin of Species” — with an introduction “explaining” how Darwin’s scientific theory led directly to Adolf Hitler, among other mind-bendingly dumb creationist tropes.

Darwin is spinning in his grave like a DNA centrifuge.

Here’s ZOMGitsCriss, giving this insanity exactly the amount of respect it deserves — none. (Mild language warning.)

Weren't they going to try and distribute 5000 copies around California in one day or some ridiculous bullshit like that?

Who reads the introductions to new editions of classical texts anyway?

The fact of the matter is that very few people are going to read OoS on their own if it's not assigned in a class. They are going to read Stephen Jay Gould or a more modern biologist explaining Darwin. If they do read it for a class, it won't be this version assigned and if they get to pick their own text they won't be assigned to read the introduction.

Time for this again, and good night all.

Pope Benedict has referred to the debate between creationists and supporters of evolutionary theory as an "absurdity":

"They are presented as alternatives that exclude each other," the pope said. "This clash is an absurdity because on one hand there is much scientific proof in favor of evolution, which appears as a reality that we must see and which enriches our understanding of life and being as such."
On the other hand, there are certain questions that evolutionary theory can never answer: "Above all it does not answer the great philosophical question, 'Where does everything come from?'" Christians, thus, can learn truth from science, but scientists must learn to accept the limits of their own work. No scientific investigation can ever prove that God does not exist, or that He did not create the world, or even that man is only the sum of his physical parts.

52 Honorary Yooper  Thu, Sep 24, 2009 9:09:05pm

As I said in the last thread, creationism is a symptom of the disease. The disease comes from a literal reading of the Bible that does not allow for Biblical criticism. In many ways, it is all too similar to what we've seen with the jihadists. They go for an all or nothing approach, with what they present as the "all", and the "nothing" being if you deviate from them in the least. Very conformist they are. And so it is with them that if you do not believe as they believe, you must therefore, no matter your sect of Christianity, no matter how pious or observant you are, you must therefore be a godless liberal atheist and diametrically opposed to them.

With Christ, it was "those who are not against us are with us". With these folks, it is "those who are not with us are therefore against us". Ironic that these literalists call themselves Christians.

Damn. Pancreatic cancer is a death sentence. Worst you can get.

Isn't there a very small window (like a couple of weeks) of time where it can be treated before it becomes a death sentence? I thought the reason why most victims of pancreatic cancer died was because it was discovered outside of this very small window.

From what I gather - pancreatic cancer, like ovarian cancer, is difficult to detect - often, its symptoms mimic other problems, and patients are treated for various other things, rather than being checked for cancer.

It's what happened to my mom. By the time her ovarian cancer was diagnosed, she was 17 days away from death.

Cato has gone after me for spelling too, even suggesting that I was poorly educated because of it. An annoying personal attack I've been dealing with my entire life. I don't take my poor spelling as a matter of pride, but accept it after many years of struggling through in-class essays and standardized testing. Many great writers, including Ben Franklin, George Bernard Shaw, and TS Eliot were notoriously poor spellers. Many scientific studies see poor spelling as a sign of intelligence, as spelling correctly requires one to accept many illogical rules, which is difficult for some.

It's not so simple as that. Yes governments protect and deny rights, but there is also the idea of universal rights. Without such a concept how can one charge a country of violating human rights. A government may make genocide their policy. The millions who died in the extermination camps obviously lost their lives, but they do not lose their right to life.

The Declaration of Independence speaks to unalienable rights guaranteed not by government , but by "their Creator". Now whether one is a proponent of Natural law; i.e., God wrote the idea of such writes on mens hearts, or they come from societal evolution, rights exist no matter whether a government supports or is hostile to them.

It's a preaching to the choir thing. They aren't convincing anyone outside of a certain target audience if if they think they are.

People on the right, whether the rational right, or the kook right, are used to celebrities supporting leftist causes. When one makes it known they are a "conservative" of some kind, they get giddy.

I noticed this when I was a libertarian. Half the posts on the LP webpage read something like this: "Wow (insert obscure 2nd rate actor on crappy show here) is a Libertarian!" Republicans bitched about every leftist celebrity moonbat who spoke out against the wars. They told them celebrities were not to listened to on politics and they should go back to being entertainers... but watch out! Here comes Ron Silver, Jon Voight, and Dennis Miller and then all of a sudden it was ok for celebrities to talk about politics.

The end times and YEC kooks absolutely love Kirk Cameron. He's not going to appeal to anyone else though or "convert" anybody with this crap.

The Constitution trumps the DoI, and it's the Constitution where the rights of the government are separated from the rights of the people. These were written, and thus granted to us by Men. Justify it as God Given if you like, I won't argue, but reality is that a group of men defined these rights for the American People.

re: #169 Sharmuta

Yes the Constitution is the governing document of the land, however the Declaration shows the reason for the revolution. I think you entirely missed the point. Even if a constitutional amendment was passed singling out a group for eradication, the government would not have taken away the rights of those it killed, it would have violated those rights.

Rights exist in their own right.

re: #160 Ian MacGregor

In the opening of the vid, she said that rights do not come from G-d, but from people. I think that was an oversimplification --I hope anyway. While I use "G-d" as the definition for "not people" in this instance, I'm not sure it really matters what one considers as "G-d". I think it is an important distinction. People did not give rights, people cannot take them away.

Althought, thru the social contract, one can choose act freely in such a way that one's rights are curtailed --prison, etc.

Psychological projection (or projection bias) is the unconscious act of denial of a person's own attributes, thoughts, and emotions, which are ascribed to the outside world, like the weather, the government, a tool or another person or people. Projection is one of the most profound and subtle of human psychological processes, and extremely difficult to work with, because by its nature it is hidden. It is the fundamental mechanism by which we keep ourselves uninformed about ourselves.

Paranoid personality disorder is a psychiatric diagnosis characterized by paranoia and a pervasive, long-standing suspiciousness and generalized mistrust of others. (DSM-IV)

Those with paranoid personality disorder are hypersensitive, are easily slighted, and habitually relate to the world by vigilant scanning of the environment for clues or suggestions to validate their prejudicial ideas or biases. They tend to be guarded and suspicious and have quite constricted emotional lives. Their incapacity for meaningful emotional involvement and the general pattern of isolated withdrawal often lend a quality of schizoid isolation to their life experience

Another Hamas representative was cited by Israel Radio early Friday morning as rejecting references Netanyahu made to the Jewish people's claim to Israel, saying that "Palestine has never been Jewish land."

Saib Erekat, the Palestinian Authority's main negotiator with Israel, called Netanyahu's demand that the Palestinians recognize the Jewish state unacceptable.

A bomb plot against NYC subways is one of Those Things that I really fear, especially because it's such a terribly obvious target for the 'splodeys. (Not that my pet fear makes me unusual, I mean 8 million + people live in that city, but it's just something in particular that worries me.)

The Dallas plot, I have to say, sounds really fckin' stupid... Downtown Dallas shouldn't be on anybody's target list, it's such a sterile target. There's nothing there to blow up and you'd need a king-sized bomb to do any damage to those buildings. You'd have to be desperately dumb to think that anybody in the rest of the world would tremble before your terrorist might for blowing out a few windows at a bank tower in Dallas. An attack on Ft. Worth or Austin would have had ten times the psychological effect, especially here in TX.

Concentrate on the happy couple and grit your teeth. :)

I'm less worried about the brother - who used to be a cute kid, and for whom I will always bear some guilt. I think if we'd been more inclusive of him and didn't always treat him as C***'s stupid little brother he might have gone a different way. That movement works like a gang - they find the lost kids and make them feel at home and give them someone to blame for their problems.

I don't take whole guilt for it because I didn't have the best teenage years (nor do a lot of people) and they don't wind up as skinheads. But still... *sigh* I remember when he was a dorky kid who thought SHARPs were really cool and before he got all boots-n-braces.

It's his baby-momma that makes me uncomfortable. Her giant double lightning bolt tattoo is hard to hide and she's got a big mouth.

Actually, I read the introductions to pretty much everything.

But as to why they're doing this: it sprinkles a published work around the world which they can then cite in the future. Like Noam Chomsky, they're creating their own reference chain to take the place of the nothingness that currently backs them up.

I'd also have concerns over the state of the text itself. I have a strong suspicion it's been, shall we say, modified in this edition, once again with an eye toward future citation in mind.

re: #302 SixDegrees

Normal creationist practice is to quote mine Darwin's arguments.

For example this is taken directly from his book:

To suppose that the eye, with all its inimitable contrivances for adjusting the focus to different distances, for admitting different amounts of light, and for the correction of spherical and chromatic aberration, could have been formed by natural selection, seems, I freely confess, absurd in the highest possible degree.

Of course the book continues...

Yet reason tells me, that if numerous gradations from a perfect and complex eye to one very imperfect and simple, each grade being useful to its possessor, can be shown to exist; if further, the eye does vary ever so slightly, and the variations be inherited, which is certainly the case; and if any variation or modification in the organ be ever useful to an animal under changing conditions of life, then the difficulty of believing that a perfect and complex eye could be formed by natural selection, though insuperable by our imagination, can hardly be considered real. How a nerve comes to be sensitive to light, hardly concerns us more than how life itself first originated; but I may remark that several facts make me suspect that any sensitive nerve may be rendered sensitive to light, and likewise to those coarser vibrations of the air which produce sound.

Now imagine if people had a copy of the Origin without the continuations...

I don't know if Cameron is going to do this.

On one hand it sounds like something that Cameron would think was a smart thing to do. On the other hand... um :-)

Still I'm not worried about this. If he does something like that then it will soon become public knowledge. If people go out on the web and produce quotes from Kirk's book then people will immediately ask them for their source (this will happen even if their source was creationist websites). People could then explain about creationist quote mining and use Kirk's book as THE prime example.

Kirk is at a disadvantage because he is wrong.

The more he draws attention to the evidence for evolution and the more stunts he pulls, the more people will have a chance to show others that he is wrong. Kirk does evolutionary theory a service because he shows how stupid and dishonest creationism is.

Some Creationists have already learned this lesson; they have stopped posting here because there are too many people who can answer their talking points and they realize that all they have achieved is to educate the readers of this blog. An education in evolutionary theory and its evidence does NOT favor people towards creationism. And giving a full airing of creationist ideas shows others how empty and ludicrous they are.

Their best hope is to sabotage science education and rely on people's apathy to keep them in the dark on evolutionary theory.

They have learned the lesson from War Games, "A strange game. The only winning move is not to play. How about a nice game of chess?"

While agree with her sentiment and have no agreement with Mike from Growing Pains, some of her examples and anologies are stretches. And she is annoying.

My main beef concerns her section on opening the constitution to read what liberties you are given. While I understand that this is where they are guaranteed, the founders wrote that these (paraphrasing) unalienable rights were endowed to us by our creator in the Declaration of Independence.

Granted that they are enumerated in the constitution, but it is clear that they were trying to show that our liberties should not be infringed by the government. This is true whether you agree that Jefferson was a christian or a deist; whether or not you believe that Jefferson was trying to win favor with Christians within the continental congress or not. I don't care either way on that point, just that liberty extended from that sentiment.

Ray Comfort is the same half-wit who claimed that the banana is "proof of intelligent design", because "it is shaped to fit the hand, has a handy pull-tab to open it, has 5 sides to allow comfortable holding, changes colors to show when it's ripe, etc., etc." What he didn't bother to find out is that the modern bananas we eat have been CULTIVATED to have these characteristics, and that natural bananas are about as far from what we buy at the supermarket as an F1 racer is from a horse-drawn wagon.

311 gojeepgo  Fri, Sep 25, 2009 6:48:58am

The one and only issue I have with her rebuttals is her assertion that liberties come from other people. They can be recognized by other people, but not granted. We are endowed by our creator with our liberties, whether you believe our creator is God or nature. The only thing other people can do to our liberties is limit or deny them.

"Ah yes, [life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness]... Life? What 'right' to life has a man who is drowning in the Pacific? The ocean will not hearken to his cries. What 'right' to life has a man who must die to save his children? If he chooses to save his own life, does he do so as a matter of 'right'? If two men are starving and cannibalism is the only alternative to death, which man's right is 'unalienable'? And is it 'right'? As to liberty, the heroes who signed the great document pledged themselves to buy liberty with their lives. Liberty is never unalienable; it must be redeemed regularly with the blood of patriots or it always vanishes. Of all the so-called natural human rights that have ever been invented, liberty is least likely to be cheap and is never free of cost. The third 'right'?—the 'pursuit of happiness'? It is indeed unalienable but it is not a right; it is simply a universal condition which tyrants cannot take away nor patriots restore. Cast me into a dungeon, burn me at the stake, crown me king of kings, I can 'pursue happiness' as long as my brain lives—but neither gods nor saints, wise men nor subtle drugs, can insure that I will catch it."

If you wish to believe your rights are granted to you by God, that's your choice -- but it's a belief, not a fact.

You miss the point.

There are positively enumerated rights, and rights that people have by virtue of existence. The latter are called "Natural Rights." It is a concept that dates back to a slightly different semantics. It is not meant to assume that critters in the forest, or Autralopithecus aferensis had some legal system. It is a synonym for "inalienable." You have, for example, the right to a personality—no one can take that away, it is a "natural right." The default human condition—sans other humans imposing something else—is liberty.

This is not the least bit controversial an idea, though some have argued that only the strong can exercise most natural (also called inalienable) rights.

I am an atheist, so I don't imagine my natural rights are granted by anyone—positively enumerated rights are a different matter. Saying they are granted "by nature" is something that, say, Jefferson might have written. I would personally say I have them by virtue of existence.

But that's not true at all. By virtue of existence, you have no rights at all.

The only rights you have are those granted by other human beings. And there are many points in history at which human beings have gratuitously taken away those rights -- often causing the deaths of millions.

I know this thread's ended, but I think it's an interesting discussion.

In those situations with millions of deaths or amazonian ranin forests, haven't they taken away the essence of what it means to be a man (human)? I'm guessing that without those things you've taken away the human spirit which is what separates us from other species.

Most of my atheist friends use the term "god" to represent human catechisms practiced in certain religions. The don't see the point in them, but that view can be shared by non-atheists too.

Some of my friends are into the religion of science. (Try explaining theoretical computer science to dogmatic high school science teachers who think they know everything.) The scientific method is just a specialized set of logic. All great scientists of the 20th century including atheists believed in fundamental truths outside of the scientific methods and logic. The often just called that God, God principle, God rolls dice, God particles, etc.

One of the great proofs of the past 100 years was Goedel's incompleteness theorem. If you don't recognize Goedel, i.e. some fundamental truths that will always be outside of any consistent set of scientific principles or logic, then you believe in an inconsistent science, which in all practicality, means anything can be proven.

Consistency and completeness, never the two shall meet.
