This is a good theme song for the private threads.
What’s he building in there?
What the hell is he building
In there?
He has subscriptions to those
Magazines… He never
Waves when he goes by
He’s hiding something from
The rest of us… He’s all
To himself… I think I know
Why… He took down the
Tire swing from the Peppertree
He has no children of his
Own you see… He has no dog
And he has no friends and
His lawn is dying… and
What about all those packages
He sends. What’s he building in there?
With that hook light
On the stairs. What’s he building
In there… I’ll tell you one thing
He’s not building a playhouse for
The children what’s he building
In there?

On another topic, did you see the video in Chicago of those neanderthols beating up that poor kid. Disgusting. The African American community wonders why everyone has a low opinion of them as a whole, asked and answered. I feel so bad for that poor honor student’s family who did their best to raise their kid right and neanderthols kill him. Send the suburbs the honor students from the hood so they have a fighting chance. Unfortunately the suburbs only get the neanderthols so the urban school’s numbers look better for contract negotiating time for the teachers union. Pathetic.

He also has no idea what he’s talking about. I went to a suburban school, and the kids that bused in from the city were the ones whose parent were serious about their education, not so that the city schools could ship off problem students to us for their “numbers” or whatever the hell that bigot is talking about.

Except that gang violence was a reality before Obama was in office, not all gang members are black, the south has gangs too who do the same stuff (but they frequently wear sheets) and that right is trying to paint this as another sign that America has somehow changed for the worse by promoting fear of black people.

I’ll guess that comment isn’t going to be very popular with approximately 50% of the audience, but I get it. Kids in HS especially FB players need to steer far away from the clinging GF types. It doesn’t seem to affect baseball or basketball players nearly as much. But it destroys football players. Not really sure why.

BTW, they think that you are a meanie and they won’t go to bed until you say you’re sorry, give them a cookie and a glass of milk, and read them a little bedtime story - preferably one with lots of guns and black helicopters in it.
Charles, they are grown ups! Why don’t you respect their rights to whine and throw tantrums? You are just sooo mean! And they think YOU are stalking THEM! I mean they know you are because they watch this site every moment they are not whining about you!
And the way you won’t let them post racist bile, or outrageous conspiracy theories anymore! Charles… Don’t you know that you have the only corner on the web they could go to print such hateful rants!
And you are also so mean in the way you won’t let them call you hateful names - on your own site even…
I don’t know Charles… Maybe you should ive them a little kiss on their heads and a cookie so they can sleep well. You know they have nightmares a lot these days.
Pamela, McCain, Spencer, Coulter and Malkin all think there is lot’s to be perpetually angry and frightened at. Beck told them so too and Rush is even scared. They are too. They need your attention Charles. They simply can not exist without you noticing them. Their lives are that empty and pathetic and you just don’t care…
Why don’t you feel more sorry for them? It is very hard being an utter loser. I’ll guess that comment isn’t going to be very popular with approximately 50% of the audience, but I get it. Kids in HS especially FB players need to steer far away from the clinging GF types. It doesn’t seem to affect baseball or basketball players nearly as much. But it destroys football players. Not really sure why.
he was never close to his girls…he’s down in Florida at dental school and now has a real steady…26 years old and she’s finally the love of his life…he’s a very aggressive outdoor type…lots of competition etc…and you are exactly right about clinging girls…they throw themselves at him and it turns him off

I’ve read a lot of research that indicates that Neanderthals were pretty peaceable and nice folks, and they knapped better flints than homo sap.
I’m pretty sure (when I’m feeling gloomy, anyhow) that Neanderthals aren’t in the genome.

Its a tricky road for parents. The more you tell them what to avoid, the more they naturally want to not avoid it out of curiosity. But you can’t just say nothing about it. Lucky for us, our two oldest ones are boys, they are easier to influence which gives us some time to learn about dealing with the youngest.

One was “taught” by Larry Berg at USC. He hauled in every politico in town, and made them talk for an hour, Thursday nights at 7, IIRC, then “class” adjourned to “Julies Trojan Barrel” where a pitcher of beer was $1 (It was a LONG time ago), and Larry bought, while the guest speaker answered students questions. My favorite ( and I wish I’d known enough to as a HARD question) was Jesse Unruh.

What I’m driving at is this: don’t let circumstances rule your life. If you have a dream/aspiration the go for it. Even if it doesn’t turn out like you hoped (and indeed, often is the case where the results of our efforts turn out as we had initially expected) you will be able to look back and not regret leaving a stone unturned.
Trying to build your future around what other’s say is the current climate is not a path to happiness or fulfillment, IMO.

OT: Yemen is a mess. Anyone have any ideas about what this will turn into or any way to restore some semblance of calm?
From the Wall St Jnl:
Arab and Western officials worry that al Qaeda is securing a stronghold in Yemen, where the government’s focus on quelling a rebel insurgency is allowing the terror group to strengthen its ability to destabilize neighbors in East Africa and the Mideast.
Yemen’s government, which has long struggled to assert control over the country’s far-flung tribes and Islamic militant groups, launched a new offensive this summer against rebels living near its northern border with Saudi Arabia. The fighting, now in its seventh week, has shaken a fragile humanitarian situation. United Nations officials warned recently that food aid in the region is running low.
View Full Image
European Pressphoto Agency
Armed Yemeni tribesmen who allegedly support the government’s fight against Houthi rebels gathered in northern Saada province earlier this month.
A report released this month by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace warned that Yemen is facing “unprecedented” levels of instability.
The homeland of Osama bin Laden’s father, Yemen has long been a top U.S. security concern. For years, al Qaeda militants — including at least one Saudi released from U.S. custody in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba — have taken refuge here. One complication surrounding the closing of the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo is what to do with the nearly 100 Yemeni detainees there. U.S. intelligence officials say they have little confidence in the Yemeni government’s ability to keep them in prison back in their home country.
Looking Back at Yemen’s Role in the Middle East
Journal coverage of Yemen in the Middle East in the late 1970s:
North Yemen Becomes One of Pivotal Nations in an East-West Tilt (June 2, 1977)
North Yemen, a Relic of 15th Century, Stirs 20th-Century Rivalries (May 25, 1979)
Since the 2000 al Qaeda attack on the USS Cole in the Yemeni port of Aden, U.S. officials have reported mixed results from the Yemeni government in the fight against terrorism. President Ali Abdullah Saleh established a rehabilitation program for jailed Islamic militants, but hasn’t curbed the growing network of al Qaeda fighters who have flocked to lawless parts of Yemen and are using the country as a launching pad for attacks.

Yes, it is another form of the bone in the nose.
The picture that the right, who are supposed to be the defenders of American principles, like all men are created equal, is pushing is nothing more than pure evil hypocrisy.
In some sense, these are very conservative people, they are showing brutal images to make an entire portion of America 3/5 of a person again.
All of them who do this, Drudge, Rush, Beck, the harpy, Spencer and the rest of the twisted parts of the blogosphere, will sit there and claim no fault at all, no responsibility at all when this erupts in lynchings.
Inhofe and others will comment “well what did you expect…” Palin will be perky about “the tragedy…” and then go on to blame Obama somehow. And yet, it is like watching a car wreck in slow motion for me.
I have studied history greatly, and I have studied the rise of the real nazis extensively. It started by stoking fears of losing Germany completely and calling the government weak. Of course there were “sub-humans” at work to bring it all down. The first Nazis sounded like almost reasonable patriots, if you ignored the racism.
And then the seeds got sewn.. more and more.
We are watching a cancer fester in the heart of the Republic. These sorts of views only spread hatred and fear and they only ever end in violence.
Right now it is talk mostly. Talk talk talk… dangerous talk. Yet, give it time to make the crazies more bold as fewer people call them crazy and it becomes more acceptable to think that way and give in to base fears and hatreds as a major national party, that waves the flag, legitimatizes it.
The thing that gives me hope is that the economy is doing ok. If it does tank, given the national propaganda of the moment, we really will see an American fascist party.

My GF is from the bay area. She went to Mills but this is according to her and some of her family members. The student body has it radical elements and the community is practically communist, but they have tried to be more well rounded in their faculty hiring practices.
Unless you’re looking for a specicificly conservative university, you’re probably going to find some academic Marxists on the faculty no matter where you go. I went to Middle Tennessee State and had three of them, all in different fields and only one of them I deliberately took because he was a Marxist (it was a class on marx). Yes, academia in general is left wing. It’s nothing particular to UCB

The Dem’s won’t move to the center, the center and the moderate right will have to come to them to escape falling off to the fringe as the American political spectrum realigns. Many of their constituency already hold conservative family values anyway.
I also suggest a new party because with the current left-of-Democrat parties run by kooks (see Cynthia McKinney) there needs to be a more sensible progressive voice that isn’t historically tied to the political machines.

Why can’t there be a new centrist party? What makes you think the dems will move to the center?
That’s where the Blue Dogs are now. I consider myself a centrist and proudly support the blue dog wing of the Democratic Party.

The Moderate conservatives and Blue Dogs could reform the Democratic party and make it centrist, while the new progressive party could form.
Parties changing alignments isn’t a new concept to America, the Republicans used to be liberal at one point.

Just as a really good example of what I am talking about…
Georing in 1933
That is how we want to build the state once more. Slowly, with exhausting effort, we must reestablish the right to work. We want to give German people work again so they can earn their own bread. We want to sow once more and show that a person can live from his own efforts, not depending on some kind of support, that no one starves because someone has stolen from him the right to work. The whole nation must demand that. On the other hand, I demand that each individual puts his whole strength in service of this people and this nation.
Now replace “German” with “American” and tell me this doesn’t sound like a tea party.
This is Robert Ley in 39
Roosevelt speaks about us more than anything else, and his men and ministers speak only about us. England always held its reserve, but cannot do so any longer. France is in the same situation. Even the election of the pope stood in the shadow of the swastika, whether the gentlemen liked it or not. I am sure they spoke of nothing else than how to find a candidate for the chair of St. Peter who was more or less up to dealing with Adolf Hitler.
National Socialism concerns the leaders of the world, it moves the peoples. Germany is at the center of the world, and the world asks: “What is Adolf Hitler doing?” That is their nervous question. My party comrades, today the swastika forces the world to take a position for or against us. The world must decide, it has no choice. There can be no compromise. The Jew leads the other world. It is all or nothing. There is no going back.
Sound familiar?

There is no way the moderates are going to be able to “hijack” the democrat party and make it centrist. It’s the GOP where the moderates need to take back control.

I have very little faith the “RINOs” will be able to regain control of the GOP, and I don’t think the answer is to try to push out the progressives from the democrats. I think the time is ripe for a real third party- one made up of the middle and folks to either side of it that can find common ground on many issues. I have no idea if it will happen or not, but at some point I would think it would have to happen as the GOP is marching over the cliff happily.

OT for the person who posted this afternoon about advice on a Puerto Rican vacation (I believe they had “Steve” in their nickname somewhere), before I hit the rack to prepare for another day of pointless Sisyphean drudgery in the pool freight business, I wanted to post my thoughts.
- Acquire and watch the episodes of “Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations” and “Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern” about Puerto Rico. There is some overlap between the two but both of them go eat some great stuff around various parts of the island, which, by the way, is not that big, you can cover half of it in a day (so rent a car if possible). In retrospect I wish shows like NR and Bizarre Foods had been on TV back in 2000 or so when I went. If I had it to do over again, I would seek out more local foods.
- El Yunque is pretty neat. If you go there, be prepared to walk (it is a path on a mountain) and bring your swimming trunks with you because there is a pool to swim in up there along the trail. The trail is right through the jungle and there is plenty of jungle ambience, including hummingbirds that will come right up to feed from the big flower bushes along the walkway, even on a cruddy overcast day. Take a good camera if you are inclined to try and photograph things like that.
- I don’t know about the rest of the island, but around the northeast corner of it there are nice beaches and ocean-related things to do. I took a catamaran snorkeling day trip with my family and it was great except for two things, first that I didn’t have my contact lenses with me so I saw all that reef wildlife as a series of darting blurs, and second, that I didn’t constantly re-apply sunscreen. I got the worst burns of my life out there. If you go out on the ocean, for Pete’s sakes, take strong sunscreen and keep re-applying it as necessary. Be sure you have a tube of Solarcaine in your travel kit, too. Other than that I highly recommend the snorkeling, it was great fun, especially for a guy like me who had never seen the tropics at all.
- Arecibo is a good stop. It’s a little hard to find, in the lumpy mid-west of the island, but it is a cool place.
- Pina Coladas are sold everywhere. Seriously, it seemed like everywhere we went, we were never more than fifty yards from a stand selling pina coladas. We took advantage of that too. They were good.
- I wish I had been able to go around the old part of San Juan. From what I’ve learned since, it seems like a great place to visit.
- I won’t get into issues of politics or security too much, I’ll just say that the island isn’t as well taken care of as it should be (think borderline third world in some areas) and it’s not immune to looking like a run-down dump complete with garbage in the streets and stray dogs. Nobody was ever unfriendly to us, but on the other hand, people have been robbed and assaulted on resort beaches at night, too. Don’t go there with starry eyes - take sensible precautions and keep your eyes open.
I’ll add more if I think of anything else.
…

Blut und Boden “celebrates the relationship of a people to the land that they occupy and cultivate, and places high esteem on the virtues of country (as opposed to urban) living.”
Certainly fits the militia types, as well as some of the greenie ideals.

third parties will never work until we change election laws and that will require a constitutional convention. As long as we’ve the “first past the post” system, third parties will always harm the party they have most in common with and ensure the success of the party they most oppose. Case in point: Perot throwing the election to Clinton, Nader throwing the election to Bush, and I’m sure there are many others.
We need to constitutionaly change to instant runoff voting like they use in Australia before any third party can ever have a chance.

At one point in time, the Republican Party was new and a third party. That’s when the Whigs were dying as a party, and I can’t help but think that’s what’s going on with the GOP now.

He’s a fantastic song writer. His songs are dark tales of desperate and dodgy characters. One of my favorites is a song called ‘Time’ …I also love the Tori Amos cover of that song.
Well the smart money’s on Harlow and the moon is in the street
And the shadow boys are breaking all the laws
And you’re east of East Saint Louis and the wind is making speeches
And the rain sounds like a round of applause
And Napoleon is weeping in a carnival saloon
His invisible fiancee’s in the mirror
And the band is going home, it’s raining hammers, it’s raining nails
And it’s true there’s nothing left for him down here
And it’s time time time, and it’s time time time
And it’s time time time that you love
And it’s time time time
