NY Post: Lecture Buyers Not Buying Palin

Politics • Views: 6,973

The New York Post reports that Sarah Palin isn’t having much luck on the lecture circuit.

After quitting as governor of Alaska in July, Palin signed with the top-notch Washington Speakers Bureau, which also reps George W. Bush, Laura Bush, Condoleezza Rice, hero pilot Chesley Sullenberger, LA Dodgers manager Joe Torre and magician David Blaine.

Palin’s bookers are said to be asking for $100,000 per speech, but an industry expert tells Page Six: “The big lecture buyers in the US are paralyzed with fear about booking her, basically because they think she is a blithering idiot.”

Many big lecture venues are subscription series, “and they don’t want to tick people off,” said our source. “Palin is polarizing, and some subscribers might cancel if she’s on the lineup.” Other lecture buyers are universities, which have a leftist slant, and corporations, which dislike controversy.

“Palin is so uninteresting to so many groups — unless they are interested in moose hunting,” said our insider. “What does she have to say? She can’t even describe what she reads.”

Palin likely quit as governor just months after losing the election as John McCain’s vice-presidential running mate because of money. “She knew that if she waited until her term ended in 2010, these opportunities would be gone,” said a source. “She would have lost millions by staying in office.”

If she wants to get on the lecture circuit she should work with Rudy. He's got that thing working well, and it's not like he's not controversial himself.

Well seriously,

What would a Palin lecture be? For the sake of our brave troops... you betcha... death panel... G-d bless America... Our brave troops mean you shouldn't argue with me... you betcha ... guns... Jesus... America... Science stinks...

Lecture circuit, bad plan. Ghostwritten book maybe. Then fadeout to "Where are they now?"

Gore Vidal has lot's of interesting things to say. Perhaps he's available for speaking engagements.

Oh dear. Perhaps the grifter from Wasilla could give inspiring motivational speeches about how winners quit, and it's the real quitters who win elections and serve full terms, ya you betcha...wait, that doesn't sound right.

I don't understand why she's even trying the lecture circuit. She said she wanted to help conservative candidates: why not just start a bit smaller, like appearing at a campaign rally or two for a candidate partial to her? If no takers, then why not keep writing op-eds (good ones, like the Cap-and-Trade one in WaPo, not about "death panels") and helping look for good candidates she thinks can win?

She needs a speaking coach no matter what she wants to do in public life; this lecture circuit thing sounds very, very ambitious. It seems like the people around her believe in her a bit too much, and aren't giving her criticism and sense of moderation she needs.

I don't understand why she's even trying the lecture circuit.

The answer is actually very simple.

“She knew that if she waited until her term ended in 2010, these opportunities would be gone,” said a source. “She would have lost millions by staying in office.”

I don't hate Palin; I voted for the McCain/Palin ticket as what seemed the least bad of the two choices, and tried not to look too hard at her lack of qualifications. She has since made it very difficult to respect her choices as a politician, and much of what critics have said here about her is the truth.

On a holy mission to line your pockets, like a beauty pageant El Cid, your need is greater than the people of Alaska.

You are none to bright, but neither are those who like you. Gosh Darn it, you said mean things about Obama, and that for sure, made the cretins love you. It didn't have to make sense or be true, just so long as it was mean. My #602 from the previous thread, quoted in full for your delectation or derision, as the case may be. In all sincerity:

Shooting wolves, who are among the most intelligent and social animals in the world, from helicopters for sport, constitutes base cruelty and unsportsmanlike conduct in my book. I say that as a hunter who has no problem with culling animal populations.

Imagine you're a wolf in a pack and you get singled out, separated and harried by a loud pterodactyl machine from the air and then gut-shot in an open field.

And Palin was in favor of that. I rest my case.

I stand by that. It's barbarous and totally unnecessary for any sane wolf-management program. It is high-tech sadism for well-heeled "sportsmen" from the lower forty-eight.

I love wild animals and respect them and someone who thinks shooting them from the air is a good idea has forfeited any respect I might have.

My infatuation with Sarah bashing proceeded and grew from there...

I seriously doubt you're familiar with the NY Post, let alone its editorial pages, (such as they are). Instead, you're engaging in kneejerk hate of NYC and what you pretend are its liberals.

BTW, that's exactly teh kind of provinicialism and kneejerk hatred of the cities and the coasts that makes people on the coasts sneer at flyover country. Even when they're bluecollar republicans and conservatives-- like many of the NY Post's readers.

Well, voting against Obama in 2012 would be racism, or at least that's what Jimmy Carter told me.
(Really wish I could have used the BLINK tag there)

Seriously, I look at the field of Presidential candidates and I just kind of wish we could do without a President for a while. Not that I want Pelosi running the country.
Maybe we just pick someone out of a telephone book. I mean they can't do much worse.

What annoys me about Palin and company is their claim to represent an average middle American family, just the usual hockey mom (soccer mom in the rest of the world) and her typical all-American brood.
Really, nothing could be further from the truth.
The Palins are eccentrics, weirdos to unkind Democrats, from the place where they live to the names they give their children to the crankish church they attend. There is nothing average or middle American about them.

Now, there is nothing wrong with being eccentric at all, I am something of an eccentric myself, but there is definitely something wrong with plastering it over as part of a transparent "plain folks" propaganda appeal.

We've got coyotes near Chicago, too. Recently, the police has to shoot a cougar that had wandered into the city. That one was crying shame, since mountain lions are even better than wolves.

You people are so very wrong about Sarah Palin.

Yes, Palin is robotic, with a narrow range of expressions and a limited vocabulary. But look at her endurance and be afraid, very afraid.

It's because of Moore's Law and stuff.

Sarah is just the prototype of a line of androids designed to wisely govern humanity. Today you laugh at her; in five years you will defer to her unquestioningly; in ten, you will worship her.

I, for one, welcome our future android overladies.

Mebst! No bagel! The android over lady project is the work of the enemies of Remulak!

Of course we speak of the Illuminatus. When we, the Lords of Remulak tried to increase your culture by introducing Patti Smith and the Ramones, they gave you Disco!

When we introduced the mini-skirt, they countered with green polyester!

We are much better overlords and we will prevail!

We give you bagels and regular zionist paychecks! We give you the chance to fly in saucers and probe the masses. They do not want that for you.

We are only here to take your most beautiful women back to Remulak to be our beloved sex goddesses.

They actually feed of off your suffering. Why do you think they invented Barney and Pat Robertson!

Don't you understand that as a Zionist entity you will be well fed, educated and taught to make robotic labor so you don't need to schlep everything yourselves all the time?

I wouldn't mind if they ran on a "We're Americans! Just like all of you! BECAUSE we're eccentric!" inclusive kind of platform/vibe.

Instead, it was the mythology that they represented some (non-existent) fantasy of small town REAL america, and that everyone else DIDN'T-- that pissed me off royally.

Grandpa lived his whole life in upstate NY. Same with pretty much everyone on my father's side of the family. When the time came for grandpa to move into a rest home and sell his house, all the lowball offers came from New Yorkers who decided offer barely 1/3rd of what his house was appraised at.

It is simply wrong to imag[in]e that 10 – 30 years from now, at which time the climate models will have likely become fine tuned and more widely accepted by the hoi polloi, that there would be no action at that time.

You're kinda barking up the wrong tree, I voted for Obama. ;-) I will argue that the only two major candidates with a hope in hell against Obama in 2012 are Romney and Huckabee. He is a chameleon, but the far right is making such a mess of things on their end that a guy like Romney who projects boring competence in addition to the patent medicine merchant vibe might get some traction and most importantly, PULL IN THE MODERATES. Huckabee, I sorta like the guy, but he keeps going kooky on us. I'm very conflicted on him.

And I'm not indicative of anyone who reads this blog unless everyone else in this blog is secretly dressing up in bird costumes and listening to doom metal. I'm my own (weird) person, thanks.

To be fair, I can see how someone could be put off their lunch by Romney's chameleon vibe. Personally, I'll take a competent smart guy (and everyone knows Romney is smart) who's evasive and smooth over authentic but dumb anyday.

(also, there's the M word when it comes to Romney. Evangelicals don't have the best working relationship with the LDS, I have heard)

I didn't see it that way. I mean, I didnt check into the persons membership history or anything. So if they are a troll who hoodwinked me into updinging their post, then thats my bad and I take responsibility for it. but, i up'ed that post because i just honest to goodness agree with it. I think 'sneering' is a good word for the attitude the majority of people at this blog (that I still have a lot of respect for) are taking towards gov. palin. and I think that poster (or troll, whomever) raised some good questions. I wouldn't agree with them that this blog has taken an overall poor turn or anything. as i said yesterday, I have been 100% behind charles' quest to shine some light on the morons (glenn beck, etc.) dominating the republican discourse right now. I just happen to (passionatly, maybe over passionatley) disagree that Sarah should be in that camp. If it means I get 100 negative ratings (including many from charles, whom I have a lot of respect for), so be it. its how i feel.

Being totally straight up, i've definitely been scared more than a few times by some of her actions since the election (see: plugging glenn beck, praising carrie prejean, facebooking about 'death panels). but some other things have caused me not to give up hope. I like that she brought john mccain's foreign policy advisor with her to hong kong. I like that she didnt speak at tony perkins' hate fest. I like what issues she said shed be focusing on when she resigned the governorship. above all, I like her for being the woman who made me believe in politics after a year of seeing obama's sham campaign duping the american people. I saw the media savage her in a way so vile, I tend to now give her a lot of slack. too much? maybe, we'll see. but with a bench of credible people out there that's so thin, im sorry, im not giving up on the lady a true hero like john mccain saw as my party's future just yet.

Palin rolls on identity politics almost exclusively. It's total root-for-my-team stuff. Her supporters aren't a monoculture, and they shouldn't be stereotyped per se, but she's all about pushing the buttons of the base of the GOP. The problem is she does it to the exclusion of moderates, and she performs poorly when put on the spot. Obama pushed the buttons of the base of the Democratic party, but he brought in moderates as well.

Well, you are coming across as a bit angry, on a thread were Palin is being teased... don't take it too personally.

Palin did get some unfair attention during the campaign, but that is then and this is know, she attempting to ride her 15 minutes of fame and might even be positioning for a run in 2012, this would be a disaster for the Republican party and ensure 4 more years of President Obama.

Last week:

“Personally, I’ve always been really interested in the ideas too about the land bridge. Ideas that maybe so long ago, had allowed Alaska to be physically connected to this part of our world so many years ago. My husband and my children, they’re part [unintelligible] Eskimo, Alaskan natives. They’re our first people, and the connection that may have brought ancestors from here to there is fascinating to me. Making our world seem a little bit smaller, more united, to consider that connection that allowed sharing of peoples and bloodlines and wildlife and flora and fauna, that connection to me is quite fascinating.

I'm reading the transcript of his health care speech at this moment, and I see a lot of substance. You don't have to agree with his policies, his aims, his goals or his substance. You can be violently opposed to everything he wants to do. Misdirection proves nothing, most of the flounces misdirect also, you know better than that. Palin is judged on her own merits as a public figure, not in relation to some-one else you disprove of.

Palin is being evaluated as a lecturer and a candidate, the alternative is not to choose the Iranian freak.

fair enough. and you're probably right about the histrionics. but what if I saw with my own eyes people tear up (with positive emotion and approval) at a sarah palin speech? gay people, democratic people...what does that say about her oratory ability? im not discounting your view. or charles' view. or what is clearly the view of most readers of this blog. Please. You may not like his positions, but you can't reasonably claim he doesn't know about foreign policy, much lesshas lass experience than the Quitter from Wasilla.

Biden was a long-time member and former chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee. His strong advocacy helped bring about U.S. military assistance and intervention during the Bosnian War. He opposed the Gulf War in 1991. He voted in favor of the Iraq War Resolution in 2002, but later proposed resolutions to alter U.S. strategy there

Her speeches were well written and well delivered and she gave a rousing show during the election. But the ticket she was on fell flat and most credit her being chosen with giving Obama the White House.

Yes, she has a loyal fan base, but she is a proven loser and will deliver nothing but defeat if she runs in 2012. It is best to put her in her place early and often.

Health care reform = empty platitudes, huh? Oh he's campaigning. FOR HIS POLICIES. The man's star will rise or fall based almost entirely on his success with health care reform. That's what he ran on, that's what he got elected on, that's what a decent chunk of America wants him to implement. Fulfilling campaign promises! A better comparison, I guess then, would be Palin's foreign policy "experience" with Obama's foreign policy "experience", considering they were the two being compared even though she was running for VP and he was running for President.

The main point being, the last election is over, it is irrelevant who had more "experience" during the election. President Obama is a new development, if Palin couldn't beat the candidate she will fail miserably against a sitting President with very clear experience.

True.

Palin never burned books or fired a librarian.

She only tried to ban books, and tried to fire the librarian for refusing.
[Link: www.adn.com...]

Back in 1996, when she first became mayor, Sarah Palin asked the city librarian if she would be all right with censoring library books should she be asked to do so.

According to news coverage at the time, the librarian said she would definitely not be all right with it. A few months later, the librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons, got a letter from Palin telling her she was going to be fired. The censorship issue was not mentioned as a reason for the firing. The letter just said the new mayor felt Emmons didn't fully support her and had to go.

Emmons had been city librarian for seven years and was well liked. After a wave of public support for her, Palin relented and let Emmons keep her job.

Let's not forget that she built that hockey rink on land the city didn't yet have clear title to. That little misstep added 5% to the cost of the project.

And the bulk of the money for that project came from an earmark delivered by the lobbyist she hired for the town. They also had to hire a city manager because she couldn't manage the oh-so-complicated administration of a "city" with 7000 residents and a few dozen employees (the previous mayor managed the city all by himself, since that's what they were paying him for).

341 SixDegrees  Thu, Oct 1, 2009 1:21:23am

Not to drag facts in among all the lovely character assassination and snark taking place here, but another issue that's probably at work keeping Palin off the lecture circuit is her current insistence on giving speeches behind closed doors to a hand-picked audience, and her habit of canceling appearances at the last minute, without explanation or enough advance notice to fill the slot. Booking a speaker with a history of not showing up and who wants to exclude portions of the potential audience isn't a big selling point, content and character aside.

342 Slumbering Behemoth Stinks  Thu, Oct 1, 2009 1:30:17am

During the last POTUS campaign, I expressed my misgivings when people were tossing around the idea that McCain should pick Palin as a running mate. I thought she would be better doing something for Alaska as Gov., than doing little or nothing for America as VP.

Then McCain picked her. I supported the decision, and voted McCain in spite of that pick. Besides, she did not look as bad then as she does now that I've learned more about her.

I am now of the opinion that McCain picked her to appeal to the republican fringe that has falsely anointed themselves as "The Base". Obviously this ploy backfired.

Eventually, after losing enough elections, the GOP will realize that pandering to this self anointed "Base", which is anything but, is a losing strategy. This fringe does not represent conservatism in the least, and I hope the GOP gets wise before the 2012 elections. I won't be holding my breath, however.

The article is awfully fuzzy about what sort of invitations she's received, how many have been offers with cash attached and so on. Is it counting emails from BasementGOPBoy asking Palin to speak at his D&D meeting? Because anyone with even a small public profile receives hundreds of these every week.

We just don't know. The article doesn't break out the numbers in different categories, or even identify any of those making the offers.

Given the source, I'd look for independent confirmation and more details.

I think somebody on Page 6 was having a personal hissy fit, and didn't speak like somebody with inside knowledge of the speaking circuit industry. Maybe it was Andrew Sullivan, though, the poor guy.

I'm not a huge Palin fan, but I find the attacks on her, especially at this point, to be pointless and mean-spirited, and triggered by something more personal than political. Maybe that maternal thing was too much for some people's psyche.

Mockery is fine, and in fact is necessary. But a lot of demonization out there is just baffling. She gets more venom spit at her than somebody like Jimmy Carter, who truly deserves it.
