Attitudes of Republicans & Conservatives by demographic to evolution

Thought this was interesting as well:

Political Affinities of Americans With no Religion

Their title was, "The rise of the Secular Left." I think it's very telling to note the switch between parties. The Republicans held a very strong of 21% secular in 1990. That's a rather significant percentage. This was almost at the crest of the "Republican revolution." Interesting.

Jeez...I've actually been to Pago Pago before (arrived and left via C141). Not quite the tropical paradise some would imagine, but very pleasant and laid-back nonetheless (custom's officer's wearing traditional garb under their unifrom, etc.).

I only saw a few pictures from Pago Pago yesterday, but it didn't look good.

Thankyew, TheHeat...I'll need to strike a balance between 'arrested decay but serviceable' and 'derelict rusting hulks with their innards strewn across the landscape' .

The History Channel did a show on salvage and recycling, and it started off with a Montana Rail Link SD45 being scrapped, starting with some front-end loader thingey ripping off the carbody. It was kind of like an out-of-body experience...I remember howling 'NOOOooo! That thing still has a couple thousand miles left in it! WHY!?' at the TV screen...I think I blacked out from there.

re: #28 michaelasher

Not particularly reliable sources; they're all opinion columns.

More to the point, however: is "catching on" the new substitute for actual news? It makes it sound as though even those promoting this idea know it's bullshit, but are insisting on pushing it anyway in the hope that sheer repetition will jam it into people's heads as though it were confirmed fact. It's reminiscent of the chants of "Blood for Oil!", accusations that aid was withheld from Louisiana because they voted Democrat and other sheer nonsense.

And of course there's the central question: even assuming this were true, so what? Is there some point to this accusation? Yes, Ayers is an asshole (and one who ought to be in jail, but I digress) but what is the specific harm or misrepresentation or evil that flows from his speculative authorship? Are there misrepresentations that Ayers put in the text? Outright lies? Distortions? Omissions? In short, what is it about the book that is worthy of criticism if Ayers is the author? Or is this simply an ad hominem attack, a sort of reverse Argument from Authority that seeks to stain 0bama through mere association? I'm just not getting how this is supposed to be a bad thing in and of itself without some evidence that the book is somehow suspect due to it's authorship.

54 theheat  Thu, Oct 1, 2009 1:42:15am

re: #52 Fenway_Nation

Yes, it's painful to watch, almost like cannibalism.

Yes, please throw in the occasional rusted hulk. I like things with rust. I have whole collections of photos of things that are rusty. I find the texture very intriguing, as are all the untold stories about the objects themselves. I'd be delighted if I could have my own rusty train car - like a playhouse for adults.

Agreed about Satay; I especially like the kind made with clams that is in fact is a speciality of Surabaya, but its so easy to get good Satay throughout the entire country (and in Singapore/Malaysia). Here...not so much, as I'm sure you already know!

BTW, you don't sound provincial at all (good to hear there are some fellow travelers here), and I'm quite jealous of those certain family members of yours...as I'd love to work in the region as well.

Obama can be judged by his own mistakes, without resorting to these kinds of bullshit allegations. If his accusers spent even a fraction of the time they spend thinking up this kind of garbage, and focused on palatable ideas and real world solutions, we'd all be better off.

I haven't graduated much beyond the run-of-the mill Chicken or beef satays. And to be fair, I've never set foot in Indonesia, Singapore or Malaysia. Having said that, I've been to a couple of restaurants in Australia and New Zealand that were run by Indonesians or Malays.

Some relatives also make a pretty good Satay or Bakmi Goereng (sp?) too, but I only see them two or three times a year.

63 theheat  Thu, Oct 1, 2009 1:56:19am

re: #59 SixDegrees

Absolutely. I'm so numb to the daily hysterics and distractions I could spit. Either give me something I can sink my teeth into, or STFU. Debunking every crazy theory that comes down the pike has become tiresome. Not to mention, it has openly outed people you wouldn't normally know were nuts as lunatics. Their credibility is nil, exactly like the boy that cried wolf.

re: #60 TheMatrix31

Not that we needed PROOF that Ayers is "just a guy", because we all know that fucker and Obama are like this. **finger-twisting-motion-thingy**

Maybe so. And the proof of such a connection would play well to...well, to those who are never, ever going to support 0bama or his policies, ever. To the rest, it'll either be denied (given that no actual evidence is likely to emerge proving the connection) or, more likely, ignored.

It would be far better to concentrate on the book's content. Apparently, several former coworkers have claimed that 0bama's account of his responsibilities, achievements and peer relations are, shall we say, pure fiction. If bloggers and pundits were truly interested in developing a "new media," they'd be interviewing these folks and trying to get at the truth, and likewise going over other parts of the tome line by line looking for other departures from reality.

And, as an aside, they wouldn't be shooting their wads more than a year before the midterms, giving the opposition plenty of time to bury any such unpleasant information and mock it as "old news" when it comes up closer to the elections. But that sort of behavior strongly implies leadership in the GOP, and at the moment there doesn't appear to be any.

re: #61 theheat

I don't have much of a presence at that site- I'm more of a lurker.

Having said that, this is one of my all-time favorites. Not because the motive power or settings are particularly unique or breathtaking, but just excellent composition.

re: #62 Fenway_Nation

I've been to a couple of restaurants in Australia and New Zealand that were run by Indonesians or Malays.

Ah, of course; I'm sure they serve something close to the real thing there, as do a few places here in New York. And it all works out fairly, as I've never been in Australia or New Zealand.

Oh, and bakmi goreng (sp!) is great stuff, but most Indonesians that I know stick to the thinner Mie Goreng instead for some reason. Like any exotic (re: non-mainstream) food, the best way to get the good stuff is to get invited over to people's homes, and of course its always more fun that way.

BTW-am liking those RR pics...and I'm a old subway fan!

Good Morning LGF.

'US Jews back military strike on Iran'
A majority of American Jews support military action against Iran to prevent the Teheran regime from obtaining nuclear weapons, a new study claims.
'Asked if they would support American military action, 56% of American Jews said they would, while just 36% opposed it, according to the American Jewish Committee's 2009 Annual Survey of American Jewish Opinion.
An even greater number support Israeli military action against the Iranian nuclear program, with 66% in favor and just 28% against.

Over the next few days most seem to expect that Iran will refuse to discuss the dismantling of its nuke program and will tell the West to fuck right off. Ineffectual economic sanctions will then be proposed, watered down and further discussed, perhaps even implemented, but all to no effect on Iran's nuke development.
Israel would then finally be forced to face the proof that the Obama administration is prepared to sacrifice Israel's ultimate security and to continue to allow itself to be led around like a big, dumb ox on a nosering, and to tolerate America's own ongoing humiliation and mocking at the hands of the Islamofascists.
Israel alone will then need to decide whether it can afford to gamble that its own nuclear deterrent will be sufficient to deter a demonstrably insane Iranian Islamofascist leadership from carrying out its avowed genocidal intentions. Or not.

This isn't Graveyard Shift, more like Pet Sematary (though this dog is no Cujo). I'm watching my sister's dog while she and her husband galavant around Europe.

Good Morning Lizards. Another cool day in Jax (high in the low 80s counts as cool for us).

It's 45 here in the northeast. We'll be lucky if we hit 60.

Mary Oliver, Cold

Cold now.
Close to the edge. Almost
unbearable. Clouds
bunch up and boil down
from the north of the white bear.
This tree-splitting morning
I dream of his fat tracks,
the lifesaving suet.

I think of summer with its luminous fruit,
blossoms rounding to berries, leaves,
handfuls of grain.

Maybe what cold is, is the time
we measure the love we have always had, secretly,
for our own bones, the hard knife-edged love
for the warm river of the I, beyond all else; maybe

that is what it means the beauty
of the blue shark cruising toward the tumbling seals.

In the season of snow,
in the immeasurable cold,
we grow cruel but honest; we keep
ourselves alive,
if we can, taking one after another
the necessary bodies of others, the many
crushed red flowers.

The problem is that there is no corroboration. All of the sources trace back to the same anonymous claim from the same World Nut Daily writer.

I hate all these political memoirs / books that come out around election time, anyway. They're all drek. I try to read, or at least skim parts of these politico-autobiographies in order to get a feel for how the candidates want to present themselves. Unfortunately, all of these books are nearly unreadable. They are filled with self-serving, self-aggrandizing, moralistic pap. If Chins Could Kill, Confessions of a B Movie Actor by Bruce Cambell is a far superior literary work than any of them, including Faith of My Fathers, Audacity of Hope, and My Life. I predict Rogue will be no different.

Whether Ayers had anything to do with Obama's book (and I don't think he did) doesn't really change my already low opinion of him. He associated with Ayers and attended an openly racist church for 20 years. I don't need much more dirt than that on the guy. We should focus on the facts, not speculation. The facts are damning enough!!!

It's her fourth. You'd think she would know better. She is my 6th. I keep telling her to let it go, that's it's impossible to keep a perfectly clean house with a bunch of kids running around, and she screamed, "I don't want my kids to grow up in a pigsty like I did!" Then she started to list all the cleaning chores she had to do while growing up "which none of the other kids had to do."

I let her rant. It's all those postpartum hormones.

From Politico: Iran: Will sanctions work? If not, then what? By Walter Russell Mead, Henry A. Kissinger senior fellow for U.S. foreign policy, CFR

Normally I agree with those who discount the ability of sanctions. They soothe and refresh our sensitive consciences but rarely accomplishing anything more.

Sometimes, however, they work. It’s just possible that this could be one of those times. Iran is deeply divided today, and the clerical establishment is on the defensive. Clever, effective and well targeted sanctions might just tip the domestic political balance. Or not – there’s really no way to know in advance.
Unfortunately, I don’t think those are the kind of sanctions we will get out of the Security Council. Russia and China aren’t as interested as we are in resolving this situation and they may feel there is more to be gained from weakening American power in the Middle East than would be lost in living with a nuclear Iran. There is an outside chance that the Europeans together with the Americans could come up with some sanctions that we could jointly apply without the Security Council – but this is a very long shot. Reduce...

So overall, I don’t think sanctions are going to give us a way to avoid hard choices in the Middle East.

Even so, I support the President’s apparent determination to try yet another round. Building as broad an international coalition as possible is a helpful thing to do; it’s worth trying to keep as many of the important European countries on side as possible as we move toward the next phase. It’s also important to show that the US isn’t trying to pick a fight with Iran – we are sincerely trying to avoid it.

In the not too distant future, the most likely scenario is that sanctions will fail. We should go seriously and sincerely into this next round of negotiations – with Iran and with the Security Council – but we need to negotiate without illusions.

Attitudes of Republicans & Conservatives by demographic to evolution

That was fun. I finished Dawkins' new book a couple of days ago, and I would recommend it. My main criticism is that it's rather spread out (426 pages), so it's difficult to remember all of the evidence that he raises. The discussion of Andrew Schlafly's response to Lenski's experiment is most amusing, and Dawkins gives the link to PZ Meyers' extensive coverage of the affair.

Many of those reviewers on Amazon who had clearly read both Dawkins' book and Coyne's book (Why Evolution is True) seemed to prefer Coyne, and I took out a library copy yesterday. Dawkins himself speaks highly of the book.

Iran ready to discuss nukes in return for global disarmament

Isn't this really a complete waste of time?

I suppose the other parties to the talks could say, "Yeah, yeah, we'll discuss global disarmament," but insist on the Iranians first agreeing to give up their ambitions for nuclear weaponry. When that's done, they can say, "Oh, global disarmament? Not happening, oh and thanks for giving up the idea of an atom bomb." Now, it's time to interrupt my dogmatic slumber.

Also from Politico: Stephen M. Walt, Professor of International Affairs, Harvard:

Sanctions won’t work, because they are an intrinsically weak weapon and because the rest of the international community won’t support a full-court press. Military force won’t work either, because airstrikes can only delay an Iranian bomb and will give them even more reason to want to get a deterrent as soon as possible.

Trying to overthrow the regime via covert action has been tried and hasn’t worked either. The only course of action that might—repeat, might—work is to take the threat of military force and regime change off the table, and begin working on a broader grand bargain with Tehran. They will insist on enrichment, but we may—repeat may—be able to convince them that not weaponizing is better than an actual bomb. That will require patience and forbearance, however, and neocons and other hawks will be howling “appeasement” throughout. As a result, the United States will probably continue its ineffectual combination of half-hearted gestures and ineffectual threats, thereby reinforcing mutual suspicions and if anything making things worse.

Another opinion regarding Iran. I don't agree with the "grand bargain" idea due to what we seem to know about the internal unpopularity of the mullahs. It seems to me that this would legitimize same.

Global disarmament. Oh, I'm sure that will work out splendidly. All the regimes that are busy pursuing nuclear weapons covertly are suddenly going to jump on the disarmament bandwagon at precisely the same time that all the nuclear states decide to get out of the game?

It's a fantasy world to think that the Iranians aren't going to continue with their covert nuclear program just as they have done all along. It's a ploy to get the world to let down its guard all while letting the Iranians work on their nuclear program all the same.

Moreover, it's a ploy to get Israel disarmed - demanding inspections of Dimona and revelation of Israel's nuclear arsenal, which could strike at Iran via its own missile systems, or via sub launched cruise missiles. Israel has never admitted to having a nuclear weapons program, but everyone pretty much agrees that they do.

Bear in mind that the Qom facility was suspected by intel agencies all along. That was in addition to the known Natanz facility. There are at least a dozen more nuclear related facilities suspected of involvement in the Iranian nuclear program. They've distributed their nuclear program precisely to avoid having it taken out in one fell swoop by anyone hoping to disrupt their program as Israel did in 1981 to Iraq.

The Iranian mullahs are busy working towards the very weapons they hope will help them achieve their ultimate goals of domination in the region, and throwing out a claim that the Iranians are willing to discuss this is a nonstarter.

Calls for a direct talk between the US and Iran amounts to nothing less than the legitimization of the regime that took and held power by force, coercion, and fraud.

216 lawhawk  Thu, Oct 1, 2009 7:14:35am

re: #199 John Neverbend

Same Walt.

Walt is right that there are few ways of dealing with the Iranians; and that military force, or the threat to use force are the most likely to result in a favorable outcome, precisely because the Iranians have played everyone else for fools, including their nominal backers like China and Russia. Both the Russians and Chinese are trying to limit US influence in the region, and China needs the oil to keep their own economy afloat. They could care less about human rights or democracy in Iran, or the Iranian nuclear program, but if anything threatens their oil supplies, they'll do what they can to prevent the supplies from being affected.

The Russians have the Iranians on their Southern flank (along with the former Soviet republics) and still hold to the notion of having a sphere of influence around them - preventing US influence is a big deal. They also want to keep a potential purchaser of Russian arms available to keep Russian industry going. They too have no interest in human rights or democracy, and limiting US influence is paramount, even if it means the mullahs gain access to the very weapons that could attack Moscow just as surely as it could Europe or the rest of the Middle East. They figure that they'll be the last to be targeted.

That may be true in some quarters.

But I think there are also people who are genuinely concerned that the requirement of a picture ID for anything as being an undue hardship for some people to acquire, and thus discriminatory against those people. It's my personal belief is that the "hardship" part could be true for a small portion of the population.

But there are many states that issue picture ID's in lieu of a driver's license, for those seeking the ID, and at a reduced cost or no cost.

Look - I'm a conservative through and through, and my opinions are formed in good faith, based on my values and principles.

If I want that to be recognized by others who think differently (for instance, my lib brother who aggravates me no end by assuming I've been brainwashed), then I have to give the same "good faith" benefit of the doubt to others.

Here's the official view of the Iranian talks by William Burns, our State Department Arabist who is leading the talks:

PRESIDENT OBAMA’S accusation that Iran has lied about a secret nuclear plant gives the United States the most important opportunity in years to pressure Tehran to forgo its nuclear weapons ambitions. By drawing a “line in the sand,’’ the United States, France, and Britain now have the first substantial leverage to deploy when negotiations begin today with a suddenly defensive Ahmadinejad government...

I thought that in at least one episode it was stated that you could get drunk on synthehol, but as soon as you drank a glass of water, the effects were literally washed away. Netanyahu: UN may become irrelevant
"May"? Isn't it already?

But he has some very important points:

"If the committee decides to promote the Goldstone report it will deal a fatal blow to three major issues: First, it will harm the war on terror, because it will legitimize terrorists who hide behind civilians, who fire from their midst, and the one who will ultimately be blamed following these actions will generally be the victim, acting in legitimate self defense.

"The second devastating blow will be to the UN's status, and its prestige. It will take it back to its darkest days where absurd decisions were passed within its assembly and empty it of all meaning," Netanyahu added, referring to the 1970s when the UN adopted a resolution comparing Zionism with racism. He warned that the UN will become irrelevant if it adopts the conclusions of the report.

"Thirdly, which is the most pressing and evident issue: Promoting the conclusions of the Goldstone Report will devastate the peace process," the prime minister said, sending a warning to the world that "Israel will not be able to take further measures, and will forbear taking further risks for the sake of peace, if Israel is denied its right for self defense."

Note the bolded statement. Netanyahu is saying if the UN adopts the Goldstone report, Israel won't be withdrawing from any more land, at least without some clear evidence the Palis actually are stopping terrorism.
No more "confidence building" measures, which have done nothing in the past but build confidence in the Palis that they will get rid of Israel.

I don't think the Dems positions regarding the ID thing is about getting illegal votes or invalid votes. On the other hand, nor do I think its really about fairness. My opinion is that its about making it as easy as possible for voters likely to vote Democratic to vote. Personally, I think the issue is blown out of proportion in regard to the actual effect, i.e., how much fraud is really happening and how many more votes are the Dems really getting when the ID requirments are less strict.

So, in an area that the US and the rest of the world has been stuck in the mud for decades, anyone and everyone thinks that they have the answer - more diplomacy and more of the same kinds of discussions, which leads to ... nothing except the thugs and dictators hanging on to power that much longer and with a tighter grip on power who see diplomacy and concessions as a sign of weakness.

On this issue, there is no doubt that it is the French who are leading:

PARIS, Sept. 30 -- Under President Nicolas Sarkozy, France has adopted an increasingly hard-edged approach to Iran, often out ahead of the Obama administration with uncompromising language criticizing Iranian leaders and warning that their nuclear program threatens world peace...

...The tough new French approach marks a clear change from the days of Presidents Jacques Chirac and George W. Bush, when France was often a reluctant U.S. ally compared with Britain and Germany. In contrast, Sarkozy in recent weeks has used a sharper tone than have British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and German Chancellor Angela Merkel -- and President Obama -- in denouncing Iran's nuclear program and advocating sanctions to force Tehran to allow inspectors in. ..

And I don't think Netanyahu was going to give up much without getting anything back.

Although I would like to hear him say:
"Israel accepted the idea of 'land for peace'. We have given up land, and received terrorism in return. We will give up no more land until we have peace from the land we have given up.
And we will not allow the situation to continue indefinitely. If the Palestinians do not honor their side; if we do not eventually get peace, we will take back the land."

If you can't just pick up where you left off, get a good breakfast (omelet, or eggs in some form - boiled will do, I guess; hashbrowns or other starch, coupla cups of coffee, a smoke if you indulge) and then, a quick beverage on your way out the door.

I think very few people question whether Russia and China care about human rights, democracy or anything else that is not in their respective self-interests. I'd say Iran having nuclear weapons in and of itself isn't against Russia and China interests, at least not to any great degree. However, Iran using nuclear weapons against anyone, i.e., Israel, would absolutely be against there interests, in my opinion. If that is the case, why the Russian/Chinese courses of action?

Taxes—the deficit is so large, that all sorts of taxes are coming. FICA tax caps will go, rates will climb on income tax, and still it will not be enough. Some sort of sales tax or value added tax, on top of rising state income taxes, is coming—at precisely the time the stimulus waste reminds us that thousands of taxpayers’ first five months of work this year were simply given away or squandered as part of a $2 trillion deficit. Many voted for Obama thinking they would either not be taxed but receive more largess, or that they would not be taxed too much; I think both groups will soon discover the truth.

Good find. Here's a quote that tells you most of what you need to know about Lynn Vincent:

Vincent's past projects include co-writing the memoir of General William Boykin, who blasted the media and President George W. Bush alike for ending his career over his casting the war on terror in overtly religious terms. Her most political book, "Donkey Cons," describes the Democratic Party since its inception as "pro-gangster" and the "party of treason and subversion." Her work for World Magazine, where she was an editor, includes a description of President Barack Obama as the "minority survivor" of the "black genocide" - that is, abortion.

Taxes are going to rise across the board. The only question is how badly their going to rise, and the Administration is playing a shell game with the public over the extent of the increases. Obama's tax pledges were never worth a dime, and we'll be seeing some kind of major tax hike within the next couple of years because the failure to raise revenues in any fashion will put an already precarious fiscal situation into an even worse position.

VAT is one likely outcome, as is cap n' tax, but the worst case scenario is the imposition of several of these taxes, along with a repeal of all the Bush era tax cuts - a massive tax hike all across the board.

When a strong quake occurs, it acts like ringing a bell - and the stresses relieved in one section of the globe can increase pressure elsewhere, which has to be relieved with a quake of its own That's why we see quakes occur in bunches. Quakes closest in are aftershocks of the initial quake.

I know, although these seem a bit spread out. But I believe they're all part of the Pacific plate.

If all the Bush tax hikes go by the boards, April 2011 will be very ugly for many Americans who find themselves having to pay up a far larger chunk than they'd been accustomed to.

It also means that the estate taxes will be reinstated.

Unless Congress acts to adjust the lower tax brackets, it will hit the middle class hard, and lower income taxpayers will be slammed. The brackets that were previously 15, 28, 31, 36, and 39.6 percent were reduced and expanded to 10, 15, 25, 28, 33, and 35 percent. Anyone in the current 10% bracket will find themselves paying 50% more in taxes (minus any other adjustments, deductions, credits). I suspect Obama will try to keep the lowest brackets where they are, while letting the 25% to 35% brackets increase to 28, 31, 36, and 39.6%. But, then again, he's needing the revenues, so the whole thing is up in the air.

Actually, the Bush tax cuts automatically revert to the pre 2001 tax brackets without any Congressional intervention. That was built into the EGTRRA of 2001 and the JGTRRA of 2003 to secure passage - that the tax brackets would revert after 2010. It would take the passage of another law to amend the tax law to adjust the brackets in any fashion.

This point was mentioned on the radio this AM. It's very unlikely that the American Samoa and the Indonesia quakes are related, given that they're at least 10K kilometers apart. However, the expert did say that there can be causality when earthquakes occur within 1K KM of each other. (Assuming I heard this correctly -- I was lightly dozing at the time.)

Well, the rates are going up automatically. That's another kick-the-can down the road trick Congress has come up with - pass something nice they can take immediate credit for, then put an expiration date on it so some future Congress has to deal with making the hard decisions.

Carter's political antisemitism originates in his anti-Judaism. He's a complete bigot:

While former president Jimmy Carter's Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid generated many accusations of bias and anti-Semitism, another Jimmy Carter work published last year, three sets of audio CD's of Bible classes he delivered in his hometown church in Georgia, has largely passed under the radar.

And yet these CD's, published by Simon and Schuster in 2007 based on lessons Carter delivered in 1998, 2001 and 2003, feature a disturbing number of subtle and not so subtle anti-Jewish and anti-Israel statements - plus a fair dose of falsehood and ignorance...

"As much of a sacrifice as people say this is for me or Oprah or the president to come for these few days," the first lady told a crowd of people involved in the Chicago project, "so many of you in this room have been working for years to bring this bid home."

Nope, even cooler:

The Cellular Cosmogony was Teed's magnum opus. Teed propounded that the surface of the earth is concave, not convex, and that the entire universe is contained within the 25,000 mile circumference of the inside-out earth. The Sun is in the exact center of the 'cosmic egg,' 4,000 miles away, and is actually a helix. However we never see this directly, only some kind of reflection of it. The Sun is dark on one side, which produces day and night. The moon is a reflection of the Earth, and Teed believed he could see outlines of the Earth's continents and seas on it! Other astronomical phenomena are essentially optical illusions. Besides geology, he also denounces the scientific method, the Copernican theory, the atomic theory, modern chemistry, conventional surveying techniques, and last but not least, optics. Truly, 'everything you know is wrong.'

re: #383 Guanxi88

Dogs flew spaceships!
The Aztecs invented the vacation!
Men and women are the same sex!
Your brain is not the boss!
Yes, that's right, Everything you know is wrong!

Hello, seeker!
Now don't feel lost in the new age, because there's a seeker born every minute.

For one thing, Chicago is notorious as a TERRIBLE place to be whenever any kind of sporting event goes on. Traffic through the entire Chicago area just stops. For another, some people have such a deranged case of ODS that they think the President should be "doing something" (like what, pray tell?) instead of promoting his country's image. Great, now I have the idea for a monster movie. After a nuclear attack on Alaska, a moose and salmon combine to produce a giant "salmon moose" which goes on the rampage, until Sarah Palin and her husband track it down and kill it.

Field dress it and throw a huge town BBQ?

I always saw him for the mushy centrist that he is. I didn't expect him to be Dennis Kucinich. In campaigning he always talked about consensus building and bringing people together. Nothing about that lead me to expect a liberal firebrand.

*shrug*

I wanted Mike Gravel.

Straw man. Don't try to portray Kucinich as a progressive, he's a complete nut. Clever move, compare (or not compare) him to someone on the left who probably should be committed, and then you can back down and show us how "moderate" Obama is.

Some new news on Iranian nukes talks.

" MOSCOW, Oct 1, 2009 (AFP) - French and Russian officials on Thursday gave a guarded welcome to an Iranian idea to obtain enriched uranium from a third party, the first time Tehran has offered to discuss its enrichment operations with world powers.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said this week that Iran would propose at crucial talks in Geneva on Thursday that it could buy uranium enriched to the grade it requires for a research reactor from a third party."

A second round of talks are scheduled and inspections of the new, secret, site should take place within two weeks.

Either the Iranians already have enough enriched uranium, or they figure they can start with the higher enrichment part of the process.
They'd have to agree to the entire fuel cycle.

Or watch them decide the third party would be Pakistan or North Korea.

The plan is to take uranium from Iran, refine it to a level needed for a reactor, but for them to stop their own enrichment program that could result in further enrichment to weapons grade material.

I'll believe that Iran is stopping their enrichment program when they let Israel investigate any location on absolutely no notice.

Otherwise, it means they have another hidden location.

And, BTW, the 3rd part would need control of the entire fuel cycle, not just enrichment, or Iran will make plutonium bombs.

The once secret facilities is to be inspected in a few weeks. If it's secret, and we find it, we can either demand inspection or bomb it. If it's a secret, and no one knows about it, neither option would work. BTW, weapons grade enrichment is hard to do secretly now with all the hi tech surveillance.
