Fisking Spencer

Opinion • Views: 2,571

Little Bulldogs has an excellent post exposing the relentless anti-Muslim bigotry of the owner of Jihad Watch: Fisking Robert Spencer.

I wrote on Monday how MPACUK was trying to turn the peaceful praying of a few thousand Muslims at Capitol Hill into a political event. Now it’s the turn of the other side. Robert Spencer has written a piece about the event trying desperately to spin it into something it wasn’t. Spencer’s point is to claim that the event was a “missed opportunity” at which the organisers should have spent their time denouncing terrorism. He tries very hard to make us believe that they didn’t because they don’t disagree with terrorism and that, in fact, they want to impose Sharia Law on the United States. Here is a fisking of the main points from the article…

To Spencer, if you don't speak the words he wants to hear, you're an enemy, regardless of what you actually say and believe. Now who does that remind you of?

Could somebody remind the photographers to take pictures of muslims praying together from the side or the front? Please? It was a serious occasion, but it makes it hard to keep a straight face.

He continues to insist that Muslims prove a negative, which gives him a continuing source of discontent and subject matter.

"In conclusion, Spencer bemoans the lack of any specific denunciation because for him Muslims are all about terrorism. They must denounce it every time they gather or else they support it."

Isn't this considered circular logic?

Don't have time to go back into the Spencer book which I have (to gather and cite examples), but ... while valuing the data which it provided ... I distinctly recall getting a feeling of unease regarding possible bias on the author's part. My interest was academic, trying to ferret out non-controversial historical facts regarding Mohammed's life. I recall thinking something like, "this book sounds like a rant".

Most of the muslim denunciations of terrorism I hear contain the caveat about stopping Israeli terrorism against Palestinians. That caveat weakens any anti-terror statement and offers a subtle defense of terrorist acts by suggesting it all starts with the US support of Israel.

I don't agree with Spencer that muslims should be expected to denounce terrorism any time more than 2 of them gather together, but I think they could do a lot better.

Of course, to claim an event held at the Capitol isn't intended to be political is ridiculous on its face, but that's beside the point. Tim Blair is indeed a scumbag. I think we all took notice when the birth certificate issue came to the fore, before the election, during the primaries. We all later found it to be false and misleading, and dropped the issue. By the time of the election, only die hard birthers were peddling that nonsense, including Jones and Corsi. Later on, it seemed to become a fad among parts of the right, after Obama was elected, but not here. Birthers have been banned after being told to knock it off. Tim Blair has his head in the sand and has not been paying any attention to LGF over the past six months.

Nice.

Rukhsana Kausar, 21, was with her parents and brother in Jammu and Kashmir when three gunmen, believed to be Pakistani militants, forced their way in and demanded food and beds for the night.

Their house in Shahdra Sharief, Rajouri district, is about 20 miles from the ceasefire line between Indian and Pakistani forces.

It is close to dense forests known as hiding places for fighters from the Lashkar-e-Taiba group, which carried out the Mumbai terrorist attack last November.

Militants often demand food and lodging in nearby villages.

When they forced their way into Miss Kausar’s home, her father Noor Mohammad refused their demands and was attacked.

His daughter was hiding under a bed when she heard him crying as the gunmen thrashed him with sticks. According to police, she ran towards her father’s attacker and struck him with an axe. As he collapsed, she snatched his AK47 and shot him dead.

She also shot and wounded another militant as he made his escape.

Police have hailed the woman’s bravery.

They said she would be nominated for the president’s gallantry award.

Charles, just an observation.

I am not saying that you have changed at all. You've always been a thoughtful type who is interested in the facts first and the truth first.

You have also always been hysteria resistant.

Because of this you have also, taken in some new information and actually re-evaluated some things. My point is, this is the sign of a thinker who is honest. This is nothing to be ashamed of, and if people were to try to "smear you" with proving that you can actually think for yourself, rather than going with a blathering horde of losers, well, honestly, how is that a smear?

In the books of sane and intelligent people, being able to think is considered a good thing, and that sometimes means refining views or discounting crap once it becomes clear it was crap.

OH well...

In my book, being a rigid idiot who blindly follows hateful impulses and can not be reasoned with is the insult.

It should be noted the following, re: the event on Capitol Hill...

The Quran reciter was Sheikh Ahmed Dewidar.

Sheikh Ahmed Dewidar of the Islamic Center in Mid-Manhattan, has stood next to President Bush at Ground Zero in Manhattan and condemned the 9/11 attacks. But critics have also pointed to statements he made in Arabic, translated into English by the Middle East Media Research Institute, that Zionists control the American media, economy, and government.

[Link: www.nj.com...]

and on MEMRI:

[Link: memri.org...]

This is the dude who led the prayer services.

I am not buying that the organizers of the event were moderate by any stretch of the imagination.

113 scaramouche  Thu, Oct 1, 2009 12:01:20pm

A bigot is defined as “someone who treats members of a group with hatred and intolerance.” If it’s “bigoted” to elucidate Islamic doctrine--which itself is replete with hatred and intolerance--then, yes, Robert Spencer is a “bigot.” But there is much to be lost and very little to be gained by so broadening the definition of “bigotry” that it now includes anyone who dares criticize any aspect of Islam.

I can understand why those advancing the sharia agenda would want to smear people by calling them bigots and Islamophobes. I can’t understand why LGF, which used to be in the vanguard of anti-idiotarianism, would do so.

MPACUK describes itself as an organization devoted to waging non-violent jihad: [Link: www.mpacuk.org...] Its website is the usual potage of anti-Israel/anti-Western malarkey you can find on many a jihadist website. The fact that this outfit is "non-violent" only means that they aren't prepared to go the 72 virgins route, and intend to spread sharia (the goal of all jihadists, both violent and non-violent) in another way.

Am I a "bigot" for pointing that out?

re: #115 Sharmuta

Did you click my link?

It is rather clear-cut.

The Sheikh who read from the Quran - at the very Muslim prayer session in D.C. - is an absolute extremist, who said openly antisemitic hate in Arabic.

I did not get this information from Robert Spencer. In fact, Spencer did not even cover this piece of information. I found this information on my own, by reading Little Bulldog's article. I found a link, in Little Bulldog's article, to an nj.com article.

It is clear as day that the sheikh at the microphone in D.C. was no moderate. I don't care what Robert Spencer says or does not say. Ahmed Dewidar's words speak for themselves.

They might be, but even if he is only "reading the Koran", I feel very uncomfortable with them having someone who has said (from your MEMRI link)

Dewidar: "The Zionist community numbers only three million, but they control the government, the politics, the economy, and the media in the U.S.

Of course not. Many are interested in preventing our influence in society – first and foremost the Zionist lobby, which influences the media at present, so that we cannot spread our ideas and spotlight our leaders and our successful models. Even when a Muslim tries to work in the media, he has to contend with five million media employees who are controlled by the Jews.

To repeat, I am very uncomfortable with an organization giving a place of honor to someone who spouts this kind of anti-Semitism. Maybe they want to leave politics out of it, but giving someone like this a place of honor brings anti-Semitism in.

I don't speak Arabic! Clearly I'm not going to be able to translate it myself, no matter how much boldface you use. LGF can link to whatever they like, but when I can easily stumble across political details of this organization without even trying, I suspect its motives. It is a political think tank.

Are you actually claiming they're impartial? You're actually claiming they're not a partisan entity? Calling them a clearly partisan entity with questions about the validity of their translations is not an ad-hominem attack. You are misusing the term ad-hominem.

134 akarra  Thu, Oct 1, 2009 1:59:23pm

That was an excellent, brief read. I really liked Little Bulldogs saying (what follows is from the article):

"...Spencer is starting with the assumption that all Muslims are terrorists unless they declare otherwise. From that point of view in order to show that Muslims are not terrorists they must say so. But for the rest of us who start with the assumption that Muslims are not terrorists they need do nothing to show us that they are not."

There are a lot of people who've turned their fear and suspicion into an operating assumption about others. The quote shows a very nice way of destroying the assumption - demonstrate the bigotry by showing how a human being should think in this case.
