The Oldest ‘Human’ Relative Yet Discovered

Science • Views: 5,298

“Missing link” is really the wrong term to use for this newly-announced fossil discovery (it implies a single link between humans and their ape-like ancestors, when the truth is far more complex and fluid), but if it will set creationists’ heads spinning I’ll accept it: Oldest ‘Human’ Skeleton Found — Disproves ‘Missing Link’.

Scientists today announced the discovery of the oldest fossil skeleton of a human ancestor. The find reveals that our forebears underwent a previously unknown stage of evolution more than a million years before Lucy, the iconic early human ancestor specimen that walked the Earth 3.2 million years ago.

The centerpiece of a treasure trove of new fossils, the skeleton—assigned to a species called Ardipithecus ramidus—belonged to a small-brained, 110-pound (50-kilogram) female nicknamed “Ardi.” (See pictures of Ardipithecus ramidus.)

The fossil puts to rest the notion, popular since Darwin’s time, that a chimpanzee-like missing link—resembling something between humans and today’s apes—would eventually be found at the root of the human family tree. Indeed, the new evidence suggests that the study of chimpanzee anatomy and behavior—long used to infer the nature of the earliest human ancestors—is largely irrelevant to understanding our beginnings.

Ardi instead shows an unexpected mix of advanced characteristics and of primitive traits seen in much older apes that were unlike chimps or gorillas (interactive: Ardi’s key features). As such, the skeleton offers a window on what the last common ancestor of humans and living apes might have been like.

110 pounds? That must be bigger than Lucy, no?

5 brandon13  Thu, Oct 1, 2009 7:06:09pm

And yet this will do nothing to convince most creationists that evolution is real.

Sad.

I read this story earlier today, so incredibly cool. I got to see the actual Lucy skeleton when it toured Texas a few years ago and this find looks like it is even more impressive.

So humans and apes evolved separately. The common ancestor probably looked like neither.

Well, humans and apes look enough alike that it might have looked a bit like both.

It likely looked somewhere in between, if there was strong divergent pressure. I suspect it looked more like apes than humans, though, simply due to its capabilities and neccesities.

I'll repeat a joke the Chabad rabbi told on Yom Kippur
(And note that he believes the Earth was created in 6 days, and I believe in evolution (although caused and guided by G-d), and we both found it funny)

A little girl asks how people came to exist.
Her mother tells her about G-d, and Adam and Eve.
Then she asks her father, who says we evolved from apes.
She runs back to her mother asking which is true.
Her mother says "I told you about my side of the family; he told you about his."

Does anyone know what plug-in or software is needed for the interactive link in the main article? My Firefox doesn't know what to do with it... :o(

This is an amazing find, and like so many others pushes the branching off point of our "family tree" much further back than previously imagined.
I've been fascinated by this stuff since about 4th grade (circa 1959) when Dr. Louis Leaky's discovery of Australopithicus Boisei (which he called Zinjanthropus Boisei at the time, because he thought it was a new species) pushed the envelope of human ancestry back by a million or so years.

Back in 1993, I had the honor of meeting his widow, Dr. Mary Leakey, on a trip to Kenya where she related the story of how they found the skeleton (now on display in the Nairobi museum) in Olduvai Gorge.

Which goes to show they didn't read about this discovery:

They were so fragile they would turn to dust at a touch. To save the precious fragments, White and colleagues removed the fossils along with their surrounding rock. Then, in a lab in Addis, the researchers carefully tweaked out the bones from the rocky matrix using a needle under a microscope, proceeding "millimeter by submillimeter," as the team puts it in Science. This process alone took several years.

[Link: www.wnd.com...]

That's interesting. Right from the title, he assumes something that has no basis in fact. "Nothing Created Everything." That would imply that I have to sit here, looking at a nice meteorite in that I have in my hand (I really do) and I would have to say "this was created."

That's silly, since I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that this piece of space rock was formed by star dust, circling the proto-sun, which become small granules called chondrules, which in turn smack into enough of each other and became planetoids, and then broke up and became space junk and then...

You get the idea. This hunk of rock, 4.3 billion years old, was not created to start with, as in the act of creation that Ray Comfort evidently is referencing.

The argument from creationists has been reduced to "God = any perceivable gap in science." Which is great, because it means that god is getting smaller and smaller. It's not the Scientists' fault. Creationists chose this definition.

Indeed, the new evidence suggests that the study of chimpanzee anatomy and behavior—long used to infer the nature of the earliest human ancestors—is largely irrelevant to understanding our beginnings."

So we're not descended from apes after all! Can we all get along now?

Giving Birth

A married couple went to the hospital to have their baby delivered.
Upon their arrival, the doctor said that the hospital was testing an amazing new high-tech machine that would transfer a portion of the mother's labor pain to the baby's father. He asked if they were interested, Both said they were very much in favor of it.

The doctor set the pain transfer to 10 percent for starters, explaining that even 10 percent was probably more pain than the father had ever experienced before.

But as the labor progressed, the husband felt fine and asked the doctor to go ahead and kick it up a notch. The doctor then adjusted the machine to 20 percent pain transfer.

The husband was still feeling fine. The doctor then checked the
husband's blood pressure and was amazed at how well he was doing.

At this point they decided to try for 50 percent. The husband continued to feel quite well. Since the pain transfer was obviously helping the wife considerably, the husband encouraged the doctor to transfer ALL the pain to him.

The wife delivered a healthy baby with virtually no pain, and the husband had experienced none. She and her husband were ecstatic.

When they got home they found the UPS man dead on the porch.

From the update:

Claims of bipedalism often depend upon precise measurements of the angles of key bones such as the pelvis, femur, and knee-bones. But if these bones were discovered in such a crushed, squished, etc. form, determining the precise contours of these bones might become a highly subjective exercise. I’m sure they spent a lot of time on their reconstructions (and it certainly sounds like they did) but at the end of the day, it’s difficult to make solid claims about extremely unsolid bones.

Hey, Luskin- where's your evidence for intelligent design again? Have a working hypothesis yet? And you want to talk about "unsolid"? Nervy.

Great Apes, aka Hominidae, include chimps, gorillas, humans, and orangutans. We are all part of the ape family, and we all descended from a common ape ancestor. However, all members of the family continued to evolve after they separated; the ancestor was not static and chimps/ gorillas have evolved just as much as humans have.

I would just like to say something pretty clearly if I may.

I would like to clear some air with people because I may have stepped on some toes. This is not a flounce.

I do not bash Christians. I respect Christians.

I have never once said anything bad about Christianity per se.

I do however detest the lying, hateful, racist, anti- science, anti - intellectual side of the religious right.

I do not hate Atheists. I have even said they might be right.

I do however think it is unfair to assume that people who believe are necessarily not thinking straight or that somehow their science is off if they do science professionally.

As to any discussion of either ID or AGW here, I have only ever talked pure science. My faith may influence very strongly what I think we should do about it, however, it has never influenced, my analysis or the data I bring.

I have been accused here today of promoting AGW as a faith.

I have been accused here of being a bad scientist because I have faith.

I have been at times accused of bashing Christians or Atheists, when in reality, my philosophical stance has always been that everyone has any right to believe what ever they want on issues that can neither be proven or disproven.

It makes me upset.

I am sorry if I have confused anyone by getting into a debate about the subtleties of the limits of science with Charles. That is a purely philosophical discussion and not really a science discussion anyway. It is perhaps a meta-discussion.

I am sorry if anyone feels that in my posts, which I am careful to say that I am talking about the freaks on the far right, they think I was bashing them.

Now that all of the emotional stuff is out of the way.

Evolution is real. AGW is real. People are idiots if they think otherwise. There is more than enough data to prove it, and I am not sorry if saying that offends anyone.

It really doesn't matter, though. They've got the key concept, as far as they're concerned, which is that humans are supposed to have descended from some non-human animal. That's the part they hate. They don't really care if it was a chimp or a lemur, or the Skrat.

re: #157 transient

Great Apes, aka Hominidae, include chimps, gorillas, humans, and orangutans. We are all part of the ape family, and we all descended from a common ape ancestor. However, all members of the family continued to evolve after they separated; the ancestor was not static and chimps/ gorillas have evolved just as much as humans have.
.

Apes are not members of the genus Homo, from which only humans survive.

McCain does have his own connections to Palin. During the 2008 campaign he “briefly encountered her in Shippensburg, Pa.,” he recalled. “She autographed my notebook. She gave me a wink and a nod, little knowing that she was speaking to an agent of the Vlaams Belang.”

That kind of makes him sound like a stalker to me. Funny but a couple days ago I posted this.. here is a snip from what was in McCain's post when I visited it.

Hey, when we're doing with this Kentucky trip, how about y'all sending me to Anchorage. Lynn Vincent tells me that Chuck Heath is a super-cool guy. Team Palin won't let me talk to Sarah, but I'd really like to meet Chuck

A federal judge Tuesday sentenced Democratic fund-raiser Norman Hsu to more than 24 years in prison for illegally funneling money to U.S. political candidates and for defrauding investors in a multimillion-dollar Ponzi scheme.

The sentence of 292 months, handed down in a U.S. District Court in Manhattan by Judge Victor Marrero, was less than the 30 years that the prosecution had requested.

Mr. Hsu rose from being a relatively unknown businessman in California to a prominent fund-raiser who pulled in hundreds of thousands of dollars for Hillary Clinton and some other Democratic politicians. A Wall Street Journal article in August 2007 raised questions about the legality of some of those donations. Later that year, Mrs. Clinton's presidential campaign agreed to return $850,000 in funds raised through Mr. Hsu.

SNIP

However, Mr. Hsu also had a dark past that included a California charge of grand theft, to which he pleaded no contest in 1992 but fled before he could be sentenced. When the questions were raised about his fund-raising, his whereabouts become public to California authorities and he went on the lam again by boarding an Amtrak train near Oakland. In a declaration filed in the New York criminal case, Mr. Hsu said he intended to kill himself on the train by taking an overdose of sleeping tablets. Mr. Hsu was found unconscious on the train in Colorado and taken into custody.

A jury found him guilty of illegal fund-raising. In addition, he pleaded guilty to 10 counts of mail and wire fraud stemming from his role in the Ponzi scheme.

In the sentencing hearing Tuesday, Mr. Hsu's attorney argued that Ponzi schemes were being given much longer sentences now than in previous years. Mr. Hsu "had the bad luck of being caught during a time where many other schemes were going on," Mr. Seidler said.

Not sure that I agree that "neocon" is the correct label for that part of the right that has gone pro-fascist. If anything, neocons are pro-democracy and pro free trade. The various nationalist / fascist movements tend to be insular, xenophobic, protectionist and intrinsically anti-democratic.

Love is a snowmobile racing across the tundra and then suddenly it flips over, pinning you underneath. At night, the ice weasels come.

Now he's posting his Authentic Frontier Gibberish over in the main Grief-Hole, warmly welcomed, saying quite nasty things, and in general acting like the asshole he always was, only now with no one to delete him.

I did once volunteer to go fight to defend Bosnian civilians while drunk. I was very smashed, and talking to a moron of a Russian Jew who thought he had a common cause with his brother Serbian Slavs. The conversation was being repeatedly interrupted by a mutual friend who kept interjecting things in Russian trying to cool the argument down.

It was a great fight, and on seven glasses of Chardonnay, my Irish does come roaring out. But fighting with Russians is annoying. They never realize when you're being sarcastic.

The second one is a celebration of the Srebrenica massacre, with purple-bereted goons receiving a priest's blessing beforehand, Muslim men and boys lying in a ditch about to be shot, and a creepy semi-rap soundtrack lauding the massacre and the soul-dead creatures who committed it. As someone who is a longtime poster I can attest that the comments here used to get hard to bear. You had people that saw the leap from condemning Islamic terrorism to genocide as a seemingly logical and appropriate step.

Charles caught a lot of shit when he'd ban people for advocating genocide and making references to killing people en masse. He had to start drawing the line somewhere and it was a pretty far line for most people to get to, yet there were those who crossed it and went apoplectic afterward.

Point is that the ugly you just saw would happen here from time to time (in the comments) and the stalker blogs were launched when the genocidal lunatics got banned. As they now show their true faces (now that they think they have the crowd's attention) and people there will now be asking themselves "Was Charles right?"

He was.

467 erraticsphinx  Thu, Oct 1, 2009 10:27:08pm

A lot of the victims at Srebrenica were just teenagers or in their twenties, taken in the prime of their life and shot dead.

How many thousands of lives that could have been having kids themselves right now? Sitting at home with their families, laughing? How many kids that never went to college to be what they wanted to be?

How many people's last thoughts were being terrified standing in a ditch in the middle of nowhere? In the prime of your life? Knowing that there was no way you would ever live.

Of course I do, i'm not the thread police.

I think it's preferable when old issues from the last thread don't get dragged onto new threads, that's all. I try to avoid that and I know I'm not always successful at it myself. Far from it. My 2 cents.

Thank you for that.

Sure it is. Wasn't there an article at Newbusters or Hot Aces that said that sun spot activity is responsible for record temperatures? I think Glenn Beck was saying that it's part of Communist Plot to take our lives but then he started crying so that's why I called Rush Limbaugh this morning after having myself a breakfast of American eggs and Freedom Fries.

re: #467 erraticsphinx

A lot of the victims at Srebrenica were just teenagers or in their twenties, taken in the prime of their life and shot dead.

How many thousands of lives that could have been having kids themselves right now? Sitting at home with their families, laughing? How many kids that never went to college to be what they wanted to be?

How many people's last thoughts were being terrified standing in a ditch in the middle of nowhere? In the prime of your life? Knowing that there was no way you would ever live.

I'm really upset right now.

I'm already pissed off. To praise that massacre is to descend to the moral level of Joseph Mengele. There is no difference between Serbian paramilitaries murdering Muslims in Bosnia and SS murdering Jews in Russia. Both are the worst sort of evil.

OT, but funny. The biology teacher at my school is hanging out in the teacher lounge when I come in, and I ask him how it's going. He tells me that the students can't recognize the English language when they see it.

Apparently, some kid was supposed to turn in a labeled picture of some kind of cell, and he turned in one labeled in POLISH. Said kid does not speak Polish, and may not know there is such a language. He just pulled something up on the Internet, and copied the labels as well as the sketch.

I believe that you are being sincere, there is nothing funny about being an alcoholic. He is to be pitied more than laughed at, but his disease is no excuse for his vile behavior.
Alcohol only suppresses his inhibitions, what he says when drunk is what he truly believes.
I am not going to reveal too much about what I have learned, that is something I will leave to somebody else. His past is rapidly catching up and Rodan is trying to hide from it in a bottle.

In vino, veritas. It's very true, and very sad.

Sal's not an idiot, Ludwig. Stubborn, yes, but he is no fool.

My point exactly, can we not debate things with more decorum and less resort to insult and profanity? At least with regular posters who have shown themselves to be reasonable on most subjects? I'm not suggesting that anyone back down from their positions at all, just that we not dip the level of discourse to pub talk.

Quite Concur!

Good night, all. I am following DF's advice a (well played, DF) and bailing on the previous thread, which was getting toxic.

Okay, it was really toxic.

Note to self: Don't discuss climate science with folks who either -

A) don't understand climate science, or

B) are plants at LGF who will use any available obfuscation to deny that it's a problem and limits need to be imposed.

Aaaargh...

re: #531 redc1c4

in keeping with the amount of (OTC) drugs i've taken tonight

memo to the USFS: if you'd quit stopping all fires, and let little ones run through and clear out the forests, as nature intended, you wouldn't wind up with monsters like the Station Fire.

The problem is that fire suppression has been official policy for about a century, so there's a hundred years worth of overgrowth and underbrush built up. Allowing small fires to burn simply isn't feasible in many areas; there's a huge amount of fuel that will rapidly transform them into out of control nightmares. Controlled burns, aimed at clearing out some of the underbrush, haven't worked well at all for exactly this reason - they quickly become uncontrolled.

The only real solution totally sucks: go in on foot and clear out excess growth manually. Either that, or put up with decades of huge, devastating burns with an eye toward the future and eventual stabilization, although there's a problem even with that approach: many fires burn so hot, thanks to the huge supply of fuel available, that they effectively sterilize the soil, and it takes decades to recolonize, centuries to recover.

Suppression seemed like a good policy when we didn't know any better. Now, we do know better, and it's a problem we're stuck with for a long, long time.

re: #412 LudwigVanQuixote

You do realize that the entire post that Charles made in that thread completely destroys every one of your rants? Right?

Nope. And I wasn't ranting. I was supporting the current climatological consensus, and fisking a video that I perceived as engaging in some cases is dishonest advocacy. And providing references for my fisking points.

re: #497 Dark_Falcon

It isn't a matter of not backing down. Not in the sense that I am taking it personally or trying to piss. It isn't about me per se. What it is about is the fact that we really are headed for a global catastrophe, and If someone is going to dispute the science, they need to be able to do so accurately.

For inscrutable reasons some folks feel the need to hold a stance on something they know nothing of to the bitter end in the face of all evidence. I really would not give a damn, except, that getting this right by as many people as possible as soon as possible means saving lives.

I do not think this. I do not believe this. I know it is true.

Lives really are at stake. If I let the idiot win then more people will doubt the severity of the situation. We are still a big blog and lots of people, even ones not here read it.

I confess my typing sucks BTW.

I am sorry about that.

re: #481 iceweasel

I thought you understood this.

If you're talking about me, I reference the science. I provide links to it. And my position stands foursquare with the current climatological consensus, as reflected in the corroboration of IPCC 2007 by Pfeffer September 2008 and Bristol July 2009.

You were one of the most toxic things about that thread. What kind of odious and execrable excuse for a human being invites someone to lick a dog's ass until it bleeds?

Answer: you.

No one thinks you are so clever or knowledgeable about this anymore. Whining will not make it better after the way you embarrassed yourself on the other thread.

If anyone is interested in flatfish evolution (a standard Creationist poser) then here is how it, probably, happened.

From a post onRichardDawkins.net

Have a look here: [Link: www.nature.com...]
Here I show that Amphistium and the new genus Heteronectes, both extinct spiny-finned fishes from the Eocene epoch of Europe, are the most primitive pleuronectiforms known. The orbital region of the skull in both taxa is strongly asymmetrical, as in living flatfishes, but these genera retain many primitive characters unknown in extant forms. Most remarkably, orbital migration was incomplete in Amphistium and Heteronectes, with eyes remaining on opposite sides of the head in post-metamorphic individuals. This condition is intermediate between that in living pleuronectiforms and the arrangement found in other fishes. Amphistium and Heteronectes indicate that the evolution of the profound cranial asymmetry of extant flatfishes was gradual in nature.

Questions about the possible selective advantage of incomplete orbital transit arise from the discovery of stem flatfishes. Clues are given by living taxa, which often prop their bodies above the substrate by depressing their dorsal- and anal-fin rays. Similar behaviour might have permitted Amphistium and Heteronectes—both of which have long median-fin rays—the use of both eyes while on the sea floor. The unusual morphology and resting orientation of pleuronectiforms have been interpreted as adaptations for prey ambush[reference number removed], and it is clear that stem flatfishes, like morphologically primitive living forms, were piscivorous; one specimen of Amphistium (MCSNV V.D.91+92) contains the remains of a fish nearly half its own length. The fossil record rejects the intuitive notion that incomplete orbital migration might be maladaptive.

So there you have it: their ancestors probably rested, motionless, on the sea bottom by propping themselves up on one side using their dorsal and anal fins on that side. Then they evolved the lopsided heads. In time their eyes moved to one side probably allowing them to adopt a flatter posture and giving them better stereoscopic vision of their prey and eventually they were able to adopt a flat position.

Voilà! flatfish.

Maybe moving the bottom eye round also helps detect predators.
