Awesome:
2. Appalling, dreadful, weird.
Yes, there were other definitions, but I picked the ones that applied best to Luap Nor.

Michele Bachmann reminds of Helen P. Chenoweth- the same type of lunatic:
During her tenure, she was referred to by her most outspoken critics as a "poster-child for the militias," and in February 1995 she voiced the suspicion that armed federal agents were landing black helicopters on Idaho ranchers' property to enforce the Endangered Species Act, in line with a conspiracy theory popular in far-right circles. "I have never seen them," Chenoweth said in an interview in The New York Times. "But enough people in my district have become concerned that I can't just ignore it. We do have some proof."[3] The Los Angeles Times editorialized that during the campaign she gained national attention by "holding 'endangered salmon bakes' during fundraisers, serving canned salmon to ridicule the listing of Idaho salmon as an endangered species." She was quoted as saying in response, "It's the white, Anglo-Saxon male that's endangered today."[4]

You're welcome. I'm just working up the energy to walk home.
Whenever I face the prospect of a long walk home, I always motivate myself by imagining a nice meal, or a really good beverage waiting for me when I get there. About half-way through the trudge, I realize that there's not going to be anything like that when I do get home, and the disappointment from that generates enough indignation to carry me the rest of the way there.

They want Obama to fail, and apparently not only fail at policy changes they don't like, but fail at everything. I'm not sure how clearly they've thought through the fact that this means they will have to root for the United States to absolutely suck for a minimum of four years, and have nothing go well for it. This is known, in some circles, as 'cutting off your nose to spite the President'.

Yeah, now they're against the Olympics because of Obama. The other years not so much. Guess Mitt Romney can't talk any more about saving the Olympic games in Utah nor his recent support of Obama making a trip to the IOC. Never mind the fact that the Chicago bid committee had two strong Republicans on board.

Weekly Standard deletes reference to ‘Cheers’ in their office after Chicago lost Olympic bid.
Soon after news broke that the International Olympic Committee had rejected Chicago’s bid to host the 2016 Olympics, which President Obama had personally lobbied for, Weekly Standard blogger John McCormack published a celebratory post on the magazine’s blog, titled “Chicago Loses! Chicago Loses!.” McCormack wrote that “Cheers erupt at WEEKLY STANDARD world headquarters”
...
But the post has now been changed. The reference to cheers have been removed and the title has been shortened to a non-exclamatory “Chicago Loses.” The current post neither acknowledges nor explains the changes that were made.

The study found that the Games are expected to stimulate $22.5 billion of incremental economic activity in the State of Illinois—$13.7 billion in the City of Chicago alone—during the 11-year span of 2011 through 2021. The study also found that 315,000 new job-years will be created during this period.

TPM has a nice roundup...
Conservatives Revel In America's Olympic Defeat
Chicago and Tokyo eliminated. No Obamalypics," Michelle Malkin tweeted, following up with, "Game over on Obamalympics. Next up, Obamacare."
"Please, please let me break this news to you. It's so sweet," said Glenn Beck on his radio show.
"Hahahahaha," wrote Red State's Erick Erickson. "So Obama's pimped us to every two bit thug and dictator in the world, made promises to half the Olympic committee, and they did not even kiss him. So much for improving America's standing in the world, Barry O."
The Drudge Report announced the news like so: "WORLD REJECTS OBAMA: CHICAGO OUT IN FIRST ROUND. THE EGO HAS LANDED."
"The worst day of Obama's presidency, folks. The ego has landed. The world has rejected Obama," echoed Rush Limbaugh.
"For those of you ... who are upset that I sound gleeful, I am. I don't deny it. I'm happy," Limbaugh said. "Anything that gets in the way of Barack Obama accomplishing his domestic agenda is fine with me."

Obama meets with Afghanistan commander in Denmark
By JULIE PACE and LARA JAKES, Associated Press Writer Julie Pace And Lara Jakes, Associated Press Writer – 51 mins ago
WASHINGTON – At a pivotal point in the administration's Afghanistan strategy, President Barack Obama and his top Afghan war commander met privately aboard Air Force One Friday for a talk the White House described as productive.
The 25-minute meeting with Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal, aboard Air Force One as it waited to carry the president home from Denmark, gave Obama a chance to step outside the circle of advisers he has convened to study the problem of Afghanistan. His war council has been sharing differing opinions on whether the U.S. should send thousands more troops to tamp down the Taliban, or shift to a narrower focus on al-Qaida in neighboring Pakistan.
The Copenhagen meeting was an extension of those war council sessions "as we reassess and re-evaluate moving forward in Afghanistan," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters afterward.

Yes. They are thrilled that 22.5 billion dollars of economic activity won't happen in Illinois.
I really don't think they've thought that far ahead. Or if they have, they've convinced themselves the even will be a net loss. If it were about economic stimulus or lack of it, they would have been discussing this when Chicago was first announced to have made the final cut - back in April 2007, two and a half years ago.
I haven't heard jack about it until this week, when the announcement was made that 0bama was going to throw his weight behind the effort.
It's all about spinning this as some kind of defeat for 0bama. It's got nothing to do with any sort of economic analysis, for which rational arguments can be made both ways.

The only money that would have been spent was that alloted by Chicago and the State of Illinois. The bid from Chicago was for $4.8 billion.
The bid from Rio was for $14.4 billion. Easy to see why Rio won.
Chicago's plan was to make use of it's existing stadiums and convention space, and to spend the money on things like parking, street improvements, upgraded traffic signals and that sort of thing. In other words, infrastructure. Paid for with city and state money.

Never, ever gonna happen. There's simply not enough of anything in the way of support. Everything from stadiums to hotels to public transportation to major renovations of Metro Airport would be required to host something like this, and Michigan has nothing to even start with. We're in danger of losing the fucking auto show, fer cryin' out loud - that's how bad things have gotten.
The UP has a lot of what's needed for the winter Olympics - lots of cold, lots of snow - but it doesn't have anything in the way of access, accommodations or facilities. Lots of prestige, but a huge expense compared to other venues that already have a lot of what's needed in place.

Oh, you can bet they will. But they'll wait until the proper time. Right now, it would serve only as carping - there are a few local elections this year (and we may see issues like this crop up in those races) but the big pot is the midterms. They'll store all this shit away and spread it like compost over the airwaves in late summer/early fall 2010, when it will do more to nourish their chances.
The GOP needs to have a watershed anti-crazy event before that happens in order to blunt the attack. If not, those criticisms will carry a great deal of weight with voters.

Most hospitals are doing that on their own, if they haven't already. Our local hospital added a "Prompt Care" facility adjacent to the ER, and they shunt all the easy stuff over there where it gets dealt with a lot more cheaply than a full-blown ER-style event. Minor cuts requiring a few stitches, bruises, sprains, minor fractures and all of that sort of thing winds up there. And this seems to be the trend at most hospitals.
Additional money doesn't seem to be needed. Doing this allows hospitals to streamline their ER, and the lower rates charged at the clinic reaps a higher payment rate/lower default rate than the hellacious bills a trip to the emergency room rack up. Win/win for everyone.

They seem to welcome having blood on their hands. And they will get a fair bit on themselves before flu season is over.

I would love to have Michigan host an event like this.
It is a beautiful state, though.

I'm not reveling in it, but I'm glad Chicago lost. Not because I hate Obama, but because a win would have resulted in 2 weeks of major headaches for me. Chicago is better off without the Olympics, IMO.
You are not alone. Daley spent too much money trying to get the Olympics and I think his approval ratings are way down today. Perhaps he will now concentrate on the City he was elected to govern.

Self-centered as it may sound and indeed be, I draw the line of demarcation between sane and insane on the libertarian front right through myself. I push to the breaking point the rhetoric of liberty both as it relates to lifestyle issues and economic/monetary concerns. If you think hosting the Olympic games is a net loss to the host nation, you're crazy--no matter if you invoke tax payers to support your case. If you're an anarchist and fantasize about secession, you are crazy. If to you, state rights are a proxy for abolishing the federal government, you are crazy. If you think Obama is imposing a totalitarian fascist/communist rule on the country, you are crazy. In short, if you're any more "libertarian" than myself, you're likely nuts. Come to think of it, I may be a bit nutty myself.
But enough Ron Paul pimping folks,.. enough extremist rhetoric.

We've had two in the city. Both children, though, had underlying health conditions and their parents didn't seek treatment as quickly as they might have.. and they were from middle-class, not poor, households.
My youngest is just getting over a case of H1N1, and it seemed no worse than the garden variety flu. I did get him on meds within the first 48, though, so felt lucky to have caught it.
The antivaxers make my head hurt. Dark Ages mentality.
Flu shots are kind of another horse, though... it's a scattershot preventative at best, every year.

Our Childrens' hospital, one of the best in the country, has set up a freaking tent to handle emergency drive-through H1N1 and other flulike illness cases, and it's still 80 degrees down here.
An acquaintance of mine died yesterday from complications brought on by an H1N1 infection. I didn't know her well, but many of my friends did. It was very surprising, as she was not elderly and was usually very healthy in general. She was somewhat overweight, but very strong and rather athletic, at least enough to regularly fight in SCA tournaments (full speed, full contact, Medieval fighting in period comparable armor). This flu is going to be a problem, a big problem. Get the immunization when available.

She must have gotten pneumonia, which is a complication sometimes.
From personal experience, I would urge anyone who has the symptoms to demand either relenza or tamiflu from their doctor, but it has to be started within 72 hours to be effective in preventing the complications. It doesn't cure the flu, but it stops the virus from replicating in your lungs, which is where the bad stuff happens... and shortens its duration.

We recently visited a few old cemeteries in the south; the number of infants and very young children is, by modern standards, appalling. It isn't unusual to find family plots with three or four children's graves, ages ranging from birth to five or six years old.
My grandmother remembered those times vividly, and saw childhood friends succumb to disease that are easily preventable today. She viewed vaccination as a miracle, one of mankind's most stunning achievements.
And she would kick Jenny McCarthy's ass from here into the next county if she heard the bilge that idiot pumps out of her mouth.

Yep. And get the pneumovax vaccine. I took my kids in for it, and the nurse at the health department looked at me funny, and told me that they usually only give it to "high risk" people (elderly, immunocompromised, etc). CDC says it's a very underutilized vaccine.
I told her to go ahead and administer it. I got mine too, even though none of us are high risk for pneumonia.

Umm...what president in living memory didn't use a TelePromTer (official company spelling)?
It's like criticizing him for flying in Air Force One, or riding in the presidential limo.
Grow up.
Clinton--sort of. The famous SOTU where the teleprompter wigged out and he delivered the entire speech contemporaneously. The public was none the wiser. Reagan used the teleprompter, but could deliver a fine speech from notes jotted on index cards.

Regardless, I really hope your protest goes well. The fact there are other women that think the same, enough to protest, gives me hope.

Progress?
Iran Agrees to Send Enriched Uranium to Russia
Iran agreed on Thursday in talks with the United States and other major powers to open its newly revealed uranium enrichment plant near Qum to international inspection in the next two weeks and to send most of its openly declared enriched uranium outside Iran to be turned into fuel for a small reactor that produces medical isotopes, senior American and other Western officials said.
Iran’s agreement in principle to export most of its enriched uranium for processing — if it happens — would represent a major accomplishment for the West, reducing Iran’s ability to make a nuclear weapon quickly and buying more time for negotiations to bear fruit.
If Iran has secret stockpiles of enriched uranium, however, the accomplishment would be hollow, a senior American official conceded.

Compared to Ron '911 was an inside job' Paul? Yeah, Charlie is normal. Having the gov't pay for your Caddy or whatever Rangel did is slimy but nowhere near as bad or dangerous as ppl like the 2 in the video above.
I say all this as someone who has been a registered Repub since the day I turned 18 in 2005. I think that as rational GOPers we should be the most vocal critics of the loons who make the rest of us look bad.

You've apparently missed a lot of Charlie's rants.
Doesn't excuse Luap Nor, but Luap Nor doesn't excuse 'people', either.

Michelle Bachman doesn't represent the Twilight Zone. Don't diss Rod
SterlingSerling like that.
I came here to say almost exactly that. "The Twilight Zone", at least the original series, stands up against 98% of the stuff that passes for dramatic TV today.
By the way, the absolute best way to watch The Twilight Zone is late at night, in bed or laying on the couch.

re: #105 Killgore Trout
"Hahahahaha," wrote Red State's Erick Erickson. "So Obama's pimped us to every two bit thug and dictator in the world, made promises to half the Olympic committee, and they did not even kiss him. So much for improving America's standing in the world, Barry O."
TPM has a nice roundup...They didn't even get this excited over defunding ACORN.
There's some serious maturity issues with any adult who types out "Hahahahaha" to gloat on the internet, and snarkily refers to the president as "Barry O". I suppose he at least retrained himself from typing "PWNED!"
It's particularly sad for someone whose name is preceded by the words "Managing Editor".
He must really be a force to reckon with in the online gaming world...

I seem to recall a principle that presidents should never get themselves involved in any negotiation when they are not pretty damn sure they know what the outcome will be.

In that case, the outcomes of both WWII and the Cuban missile crisis would have been severely different, to name just two that spring immediately to mind.

Oh boy.
Federal Reserve discussion. I'm so sick of nonsense about the Federal Reserve by people who are LYING their asses off about the way it works.
