Still More Advertisers Bailing Out on Beck

Media • Views: 6,800

Left wing group Color of Change has announced that 19 more major companies have pulled their advertisements from the Glenn Beck Comedy Hour.

OAKLAND, Calif.—ColorOfChange.org has confirmed that 19 new companies whose ads aired recently during Fox News Channel’s Glenn Beck program have asked Fox to stop their ads from running or pledged to not to run ads on the show going forward. The latest additions –AmMed Direct, Citrix Online, Concord Music Group, Diageo, Eggland’s Best, Equifax, Eulactol USA (producer of Flexitol), GetARoom.com, Hoffman La Roche (maker of BONIVA), Metropolitan Talent Management, ooVoo, Overture Films, Scarguard, Schiff Nutrition (maker of Tiger’s Milk and Fi-Bar), Seoul Metropolitan Government, Subaru, Toyota-Lexus, Waitrose and Woodland Power Products, Inc. – bring the total number of companies that have distanced themselves from Beck to 80. This after Beck called President Obama a “racist” who “has a deep-seated hatred for white people” during an appearance on Fox & Friends.

The news comes on the heels of stories that broke throughout British newspapers on Monday, reporting that advertisers seen during Beck’s program in England are feeling the heat as well. Diageo – a London-based alcohol company that makes Guinness, Tanqueray and many other brands of spirits – joined Waitrose – a popular British supermarket chain used to supply groceries to the Royal Family – and cut their advertising ties with Beck. Waitrose, along with the U.S.-based Metropolitan Talent Management, adds to a growing list of companies who are not only taking a stance against Glenn Beck, but against Fox News Channel. …

Previous companies who have corrected advertising errors and/or pulled their ads entirely include Aegon, Ashley Furniture, Airware Inc. (makers of Brez anti-snoring aids), Allergan (maker of Restasis), Ally Bank (a unit of GMAC Financial Services), Ancestry.com, Applebee’s, AT&T, Bank of America, Best Buy, Binder & Binder, Blaine Labs Inc., Broadview Security, Campbell Soup Company, Capital One, ConAgra, Clorox, CVS, The Dannon Company, DirecTv, Discover, Ditech, The Elations Company, Experian (creator of FreeCreditReport.com), Farmers Insurance Group, GEICO, General Mills, HSBC, Humana, ICAN Benefit Group Insurance, Infiniti, Jelmar (manufacturer of CLR All-Purpose Cleaner) Johnson & Johnson (makers of Tylenol), Jordan McKenna Debt Counseling Network, Kraft, Lawyers.com, Lowe’s, Luxottica Retail (retail parent of LensCrafters and Pearle Vision), Men’s Wearhouse, Mercedes-Benz, NutriSystem, Procter & Gamble, Progressive Insurance, RadioShack, Re-Bath, Regions Financial Corporation, Sam (Store and Move), SC Johnson, Sanofi-Aventis, Sargento, Simplex Healthcare (creator of the Diabetes Care Club), Sprint, State Farm Insurance, Traveler’s Insurance, Travelocity, United States Postal Service, The UPS Store, Verizon Wireless, Vonage, Wal-Mart and Wyeth Consumer Healthcare.

Looks like more people are starting to realise what a fucked up raving nutjob Glenn Beck is.
Good.

Bleeding 'ell! Even Guinness is pulling their ads (Diageo, actually).

At some point, Fox can't continue ignoring this.

And that's what will really get the powers that be to notice something is wrong- when advertisers start leaving the network as a whole. How much longer until these advertisers notice the issues at Fox go much deeper than Glenn Beck, and are actually systemic?

From a strictly business standpoint, it's a question of ratings vs. revenue vs. ideology.

Beck's ratings are great, but the revenue has got to be down because of the ad boycott. So maybe call that an even wash? Presumably Fox is willing to take a hit in upfront cash to build its audience and brand.

If revenue and ratings sort of cancel each other out, the deciding factor is ideology. Does Fox want to become a populist / socially conservative outlet? That's the direction they're headed.

Whether that's a business decision - or one made by Rupert Murdoch's personal goals - is a matter open to conjecture.

I think it's represented mathematically by &#8711.B = 0
which means that the flux of Beck supporters into any region is exactly cancelled by the efflux of disaffected parties.

Quite possible, but if you eliminate the sock puppets, the number may be far lower.

The boycotters are all big name advertisers. This means only that second stringers who normally could not afford this slot will be able to move in and run their commercials at a discount.
Besides the gold bugs who advertise with Beck now, this include various get-rich schemes, religious pseudo-PSAs, second echelon consumer products and, obviously, various health supplements and related schemes.
A drop in revenue does not necessarily mean the show is operating at a loss for Murdoch. As long as he is making money at all, I think Beck will stay on.

Very good point. Even if it does operate at a loss, Fox has to consider how much "lead in" and "follow on" viewers they get.

Just like retail has "loss leaders" which the actually loose money on in order to attract business.

It works.

Whether that's a business decision - or one made by Rupert Murdoch's personal goals - is a matter open to conjecture.

Considering Murdoch endorsed Obama, I think it's strictly business. I think ideology-wise, they've decided upon right-wing populism because it's easily marketed (again- money). They've found a niche, and they'll milk it for all it's worth while it still brings in the money. Once a different niche has more profit potential, then we'll see a change.

I don't like Beck, I don't watch Fox anymore and I don't even use Fox's website anymore, but the bottom line still remains, and there is not amount of carping that we can do (or Color of Change) can do to effect anything if Murdock want's to stand pat.

Why is a campaign by a bunch of leftist race baiters being supported? I don't watch Beck because I find him annoying, but if they are boycotting him solely for accusing Obama of being a racist, when are they going to launch similar campaigns against the numerous people on the left who use similar accusations on a regular basis?

From their website. "Hurricane Katrina made it clear that our lack of a political voice has life-and-death consequences. With no one to speak for them, hundreds of thousands of people—largely Black, poor, and elderly—were left behind to die."
They're playing the same race card as Beck.

Well, and the point is they're none of them pulling their ads from Fox per se, at least not that I've read. They're forbidding their ads from appearing on Beck's show. Which means Fox just substitutes non-boycotting companies when Glenn is on the air, and continues to collect big revenues from Guinness et al. on other shows.

Trader Joe's is small potatoes in the US, very small potatoes. If you want a big supermarket chain, try Safeway (Dominick's, Randall's, Von's, etc), Supervalu (Jewel, Acme, Cub Foods, etc), or even Wal-Mart.

re: #35 Takeshi6400

Why is a campaign by a bunch of leftist race baiters being supported? I don't watch Beck because I find him annoying, but if they are boycotting him solely for accusing Obama of being a racist, when are they going to launch similar campaigns against the numerous people on the left who use similar accusations on a regular basis?

From their website. "Hurricane Katrina made it clear that our lack of a political voice has life-and-death consequences. With no one to speak for them, hundreds of thousands of people—largely Black, poor, and elderly—were left behind to die."
They're playing the same race card as Beck.

You're conflating a media voice with a political voice. Beck has the right to free speech, but he doesn't have a right to advertisers. It is within the right of these various companies to withhold their money from his show. That's how a free speech society works.

On the other hand, you're example illustrates a political voice being pointed out by Color of Change concerning the Katrina aftermath. No one has the right to disenfranchise another American's right to petition the government for grievances. In other words- you're comparing apples to oranges.

re: #76 iceweasel

Yeah, but what's interesting is that the Waitrose chain yanked all its Fox ads, not merely ones on Beck's show, and they did it as a result of consumer complaints-- and all their customers are in the UK.

So the boycott and the customer complaints aren't merely coming from a few frothing US libs. This probably isn't going to seem huge to people in the US, but Waitrose is like--- I don't know -- I guess Trader Joe's in the US. But bigger.

In my opinion, it still doesn't matter. I suspect you saw my post above, Murdoch is BIG, bigger than almost all of them. If he wants, he can keep Beck on just to upset people, it's petty cash to him. Look at his holdings...

[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

I think use "down here" sometimes loose track of how large and multinational some of these people are, and how little some of these efforts really amount to, in the over all world wide scheme of things.

I'm not suggesting that something can't break at some point, but right now, I see Beck as a "loss leader," meaning he attracts attention to Fox and Murdoch, which is as important if not more important to Murdoch than the cost of producing 5 hours of TV a week.

Drive by post.

On Topic - Glenn Beck is an idiot and continues to be.

Off Topic - Value Added Taxes are not free. They are regressive. They will also knock many low margin businesses out of business. They are also costly to administer. Once Government's have them they can't get rid of them - they employ too many administrators and generate too much revenue (even though they see lower income taxes as a result).

87 katemaclaren  Tue, Oct 6, 2009 1:09:19pm

Wow. Who knew a program could ATTRACT so many advertisers. I wonder what the total is? I'm amazed. They must have all put in about a buck. How could they all advertise on the show--it surely isn't that long! WTF? However, it seems to me, that if the viewer numbers keep going up, sooner or later, the advertisers will be back. It's all about the do re mi--that is do as in dough.

88 Chip Designer  Tue, Oct 6, 2009 1:09:27pm

OT - but a good quote on Obama's presentation to the IOC.

"Brazil Beats Obama in 2016 Olympics"

That is how we mistakenly read the headline in the Financial Times on Saturday. (We wondered what event he was competing in. It actually said "Brazil beats Obama to the 2016 Olympics".) The President is taking a lot of heat for going all that way for a seven-minute pitch and then coming away unsuccessful. We don t see it that way at all.

Despite the hyperventilating U.S. media, Chicago was clearly a long shot as would be any American city. Our quarterback took the field to personally throw the Hail Mary pass with four seconds left in the game. It didn't connect — so what? Would we have felt better if he took a knee and let the clock run out?

We are pleased that the President has such an intense desire to win no matter what the odds. We hope that he will bring that same intensity to other areas of international relations.

Problem with the VAT is that it is a regressive tax - it hits low income folks as a percentage of income far worse than high income folks. If you are in a consumer economy and trying to get it to recover the last thing you want to do is kill off discretionary spending by those at the base of the income ladder.

If they relabeled it "Fair Tax" then the Progressives would be attacking it.

It won't be forever. I suspect if you buy now that you are going in at the top of the market...

If you reel back the years to Clinton's terms you will see where gold is likely to go longer term. It plateaued during that period, and might do so again. In the end it's just another commodity, and like all commodities it will go down in terms of real dollars over time. (See the famous Jeremy Rifkin bet) Once we get into next year post HC and Cap and Trade debates, whether those go good or ill, a lot of uncertainty will be removed. Same goes for Iran. I don't expect that tense situation to last another four years (I could be wrong) but I'm cautiously optimistic right now.

They've figured it all out, it seems to me. Their Christianity doesn't need the old versions of the scripture anymore. And, as they're bibliolators at heart, they decide that since the old idol doesn't meet their requirements, they'll just have to make a new one.

They'll never get to that point. Talmud, Gemarrah, and Mishneh was/is never about revision but about interpretation -- two Jews; three opinions. But your point is spot on, in that maybe these people are looking for variant readings. But the Jewish Sages never intended for their work to detract from the law, rather to illuminate. It was always meant to uphold it, uplift it, and give us myriad angles to approach the Torah.

French general planned 18th-century invasion of Britain using American force

From Julius Caesar to Adolf Hitler, the invasion of Britain has been a constant theme in the history of these islands, even if the successful attempts have been heavily outnumbered by the unsuccessful ones.

Until now, however, one plan has remained unknown: an 18th-century plot to invade with an American army during that country’s War of Independence.

Drawn up by a French general, the scheme was to bring over an American force of 10,000 that would find a Britain so distracted by the war on the other side of the Atlantic, that victory would seem certain. Just to make sure, however, the general suggested that the force include a corps of Native Americans, or “sauvages”, as he termed them, who would strike such fear in British troops that any resistance would collapse immediately.

It's hard for me not to predict some sort of weirdo conspiracy theory like Charles is the secret love child of the KOS operators or something.

A couple of theories on the stalker site.

1. Charles sold the site to a leftie.
2. Charles has lost his mind and his "friends" are worried about him.
3. Charles wants to become KOS like and be a big time, more famous blogger.

That refers to links posted to the Linkviewer, located just above the headline of this article (or just above the date on the front page.) Or they can be submitted as spinoff links to a particular article, but you'll have to ask Pre-Boomer Marine Brat about that, because I don't do it that way.

Okay thanks, I've never fooled around with either of those widgets.

Beat you to it.

I'm starting to see who's in the same age group.

Personally, I'm a Maiden fan. Great lyrics, and Bruce Dickenson was sober the whole time IIRC.

A heavy metal man, through and through...the man collects tanks and other armored vehicles, IIRC!

I wish she would plot against me. w00t!

There are sex symbols that people don't want to fuck?

I recall reading somewhere that Courtney Love was a "sex symbol".

I wouldn't hit that with a stolen penis.

Watching Beck now. First commercial break had these ads:
Goldline International
Some "mortgage relief outfit," with no name, just a phone number.
Scooter Store (motorized wheelchairs)
Some asthma outfit
Freedom debt relief

281 philosophus invidius  Tue, Oct 6, 2009 2:25:17pm

I don't think FOX cares if Beck's show is a huge money-loser because sponsers are backing out. FOX still wins because they have all those crazies watching FOX for the rest of the day too. Which is why they chose to make their news channel have a right-wing brand.

282 JRCMYP  Tue, Oct 6, 2009 2:25:44pm

How many FOX advertisers are there? They just loop them in. Is this a significant number? I would imagine that FOX has about 1000 advertisers at any one time that get slotted in to times/shows that fit the amount of money they've forked over. Not saying that Beck isn't a clown--I would never advertise with him (for many reasons), but I'm wondering how statistically significant the number really is.

283 The Curmudgeon  Tue, Oct 6, 2009 2:34:08pm

Still watching Beck. Second commercial break had these ads:
Missed a quick one
Lifelock (Identity Theft)
Rosland Capital (Gordon Liddy selling gold)

AND he's a commercial airline pilot. He flew their large plane, Ed Force One, on their last tour.

His cousin Rob Dickenson, former frontman of Catherine Wheel, puts out some great music, too. This was from his solo album that came out a few years ago. Not many other you-tubes of him, but Fresh Wine For The Horses is highly recommended.

Beck's third commercial break had these ads:
Brother computer printers
American something-or-other. (Coalition for clean power)
Poliltical ad about the national debt.
Accu-chek something about Aviva

287 The Curmudgeon  Tue, Oct 6, 2009 2:51:40pm

Beck's 4th commercial break had these ads:

National Review magazine
Movie ad: "2012" (Comcast)

Imperial Structured Settlements

Beck needs to take some lessons from David Letterman! Just crack a joke about a rape of a girl and then, sleep with half of your staff and your ratings go through the roof and advertisers are lined up!

What a country!

He doesn't need to joke about it. Everyone knows that he didn't rape and kill a girl in 1990.

I don't pretend to know anything about TV advertising, but I watch Glenn Beck and I see no difference in advertising. Somehow I think this advertising "boycott" is overblown. Advertisers, I would think, care first about Beck's ratings and their revenues. GB equals big ratings. As more is learned about BHO, more people will turn against him and Beck's ratings will only soar. Advertisers will get on board. I've read Obama's (ghost written?) book "Dreams" and concluded he had negative issues with white people so I don't think Glen Beck told us anything we didn't already know in our guts. I wonder how many posters here really watch GB or are just parroting the slogans they hear at Starbucks. If he is the nut job some people say he is, what is to fear? If were can survive Obama, you can survive Glenn Beck.
